A Worthy starter film to a cinematic Sonic universe. While the story was basically "get the rings and face down Robotnik" not unlike the game. The various references, Jokes, and clever nods to other properties make this a fun, family oriented, and excellent game to movie film with any hope i do hope we see more films like this, i for one would love to see a streets of rage film or even a golden axe film if the sega logo at the start of the film is anything to go by. The only real problem i have with the film is the unnecessary floss references that were pretty last minute, but that is the only problem i have with this. Clearly some plot points may be improved by a sequel or 2 and the post credits is well worth the wait. The redesign in general was already worth the wait. Frankly its a genuinely good family film that is worth the 100 minutes.… Expand

Since I grew up with C64, Amiga and PCs I was never really exposed to Sonic games. It is a great family movie and much better than I expected after seeing the trailers which I didn't like.

Great movie. Slow start but gathers pace. Jim Carrie is good and gives Dr Robotnik a bit more dimension. Kid loved it. As someone who grew up with sonic games I enjoyed the nostalgia of it. This movie has had a lot of flack over the last design of Sonic, but the entire movie, especially with Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, makes everything so much better. Jim Carrey as Robotnik/Eggman was absolutely hilarious, James Marsden's acting as Tom was top notch, this movie has an amazing blend of emotional moments with absolute epicness that is unmatched. My only gripe is that Sonic's powered up form could've been better explained with more than just "unlimited power", plus some moments in the movie drag jokes just a little too long. But that's literally a SECOND too long. Not any further. And the powered up form is still really awesome to watch, and the events that triggered it are absolutely mind-blowing. This movie carries emotional weight and has plenty of jokes that land, the packing is perfect, and the entire movie is jawdroppingly beautiful. Also, to everyone planning on watching it in theaters, don't leave right when the credits start. There's a special midcredits scene that you're going to love … Expand

Just watched it since they went through the trouble to fix sonic. Its a very nice, lighthearted watch, its mostly funny, a little sad and has lots of super cute moments.

For a movie that got the butt-end of the jokes while it was in production, I must say. They did a good job fixing up our blue hero's face. The movie was great! Everything about it was very good! The plot is certainly not perfect, but it still works, it's still good. Sonic looked and acted fantastic in the film! To me, it's one of 2020's best films! Highly recommended!

I grew up with the games on my master system and then on mega drive .. I thought this was a movie that was just fun to watch. Not going to win an oscar or anything but was probably the best videogame movie I have ever seen. Simple story, acting was pretty good. Jim Carey nailed egghead.

A rare instance of good video game adaptation. I didn't get any sence of nostalgia from it despite growing up wuth sonic 2, sonic & knuckles etc. Felt like a solid standalone movie with a familiar character in it. I've been a Sonic fan practically my whole life, I've experienced it's missteps like Sonic 2006 (underrated game, just saying, but I'm aware how bad it did) and Sonic boom rise of lyric and it's successes (like Sonic Unleashed, Sonic generations and the latest Sonic Frontiers). Did this adaption of the iconic blue blur disappoint? No. The story is charming and great to follow, there are countless game references that will make any fan fall in love and Sonic's final design was amazing and not a monstrosity like the original design we got back when they showed the first trailer back in mid 2019. Jim Carrey did a great job as Dr Robotnik, which was to be expected. Fans will love it, kids will love it, the whole family will love it.
My only criticism is the lack of music from the games. Sonic Unleashed's Endless Possibilities would have fitted very well in this film and the narrative.… Expand

Was fun seeing Sonic before in Wreck-it Ralph movies, but now that he has his own film, I’m stoked Sega’s most beloved mascot got the treatment he deserved after leaving such a major mark in gaming. A couple forced & lazily delivered outdated jokes made me cringe, but was surprised that it was cleverly written for the majority of the time. Jim Carrey & video games was like my 2 fav things in the 90s, so it was like creators went out of their way to make this specifically for pop culture nostalgia junkies.… Expand

Jim Carrey has never been funnier than in this movie. Jim Carrey deserves an Oscar nomination for his hilarious performance as Robotnik, though I must admit his greatness would outshine everything else in the movie if it weren't for Sonic's lovable slapstick humor that only somewhat competes. Jim Carrey completely destroyed his role with perfection and reinvented the Sonic universe's Robotnik in a way, that is better than what the comics, shows, and games have ever done -and those Robotniks were all great in themselves. As a hardcore Sonic fan, I say Jim Carrey has permanently made a lasting powerful impact in all the right ways on this franchise. I only hope SEGA can afford him for future sequels, because he is not replaceable.

The writing for Sonic was great as was his classic slapstick antics. The hints at a larger lore for this Sonic Cinematic Universe brings great hope for many future sequels and left me creatively intrigued with the possibilities. I have a strong hunch the people behind this movie are secretly hoping this becomes the next Marvel Cinematic Universe, as they have set themselves up quite well for such an endeavor, if the money is enough to justify such an act. I'd say this movie was superior to the Detective Pikachu movie due entirely to Sonic and Robotnik destroying the movie with hilarious charm. You will laugh and smile a lot throughout this comedy even though it's PG.

Other noteworthy aspects of the film were the characters, charm, and CGI. The black female family put in the movie is sweet but feels underdeveloped -gives a subtle impression of race/sex insertion in order to feel racially and chromosomally balanced, rather than to provide enjoyable characters. The soundtrack is peppy and enjoyable, though given the Sonic universe's well-established quality soundtracks in games, I feel there is fair room for improvement in future sequels. Ryan Reynolds is a great main actor to accompany Sonic for his reactions and tough charming appeal. CGI within the movie struck a perfect balance between cartoonishness and realism in conveying Sonic and the robots attacking him. Things like fur, feathers, quills, were all well-conveyed CGI-wise. Loved certain CGI-animated cinematographic choices that made certain scenes incredibly hilarious and charming in how they enhanced the personalities of the main characters.

What The Movie Should Have Done

The lore, cultural depth, and focus on adding additional CGI characters like Sonic, were all things this movie really needed and didn't deliver. Just a couple more minutes of focus or more hinting at the backstory and world Sonic came from was heavily warranted but not given. The focus on southern relatable experiences is enjoyable to a point, but it does feel a little over-done purely for the sake of appealing to a wider audience. Taking better advantage and showing more respect for the various locations across the planet the two characters Sonic and Robotnik visit, would have made the movie more immersive and potentially funnier if more varied cultural humor was used.

Certain lines felt they could use a more dramatic delivery, and certain times where the comedic tone perhaps should have been replaced with a more dramatic tone. The writing was good, but the comedy was a little soft in places and likewise there were too many missed opportunities for edgy cool writing that weren't taken. Likewise, expanding on the cultural and meaningful impact of choices made by the characters, as well as news media and people on the streets reacting, would have been a better choice to make in order to provide a more immersive enjoyable impact for the viewer -similar to what the Marvel Cinematic Universe often does in relation to its heroes. Since the characters visit multiple locations in the world, there should have been people in those locations reacting to what's going on. It's also shown Robotnik is a genius hinted at understanding multiple other languages, so it would have been funny if he'd spoken subtitled cultural jokes in the corresponding subtitled languages.

The characters were flat with no development and apart from Ryan Reynolds, Sonic, and Jim Carrey, the other characters were lackluster in personality depth. There should have been a couple more characters at least equal in quality to Sonic in terms of writing and unique charms, but none came close. Robotnik was a league above Sonic's dialogue and personality quality -something future movies definitely should fix if they add more Sonic Universe characters. I understand that this movie would have taken too long and cost too much if these recommended choices were made; but, that is the difference between 3 and 4 stars. Hopefully more time and money is put into addressing these lacking areas in future installments.

Thank Chaos they fixed the Sonic the Hedgehog design -I would have knocked this down a point for that alone.… Expand

Didnt expect much, so I was surprised. It is a nice entertaining movie where the gags are working. Jim Carrey fits well to Dr. Robotnik, only Tika Sumpter as Maddie is overacting and annoying. Honestly, the critics got this one wrong. The characterizations for a lot of the characters like Sonic, Tom, Maddie, Dr. Robotnik and Agent Stone are excellent and rather humorous than I expected. Sonic especially is the character and the best aspect I adore in this movie. The movie gives a sympathetic take on Sonic and has him go through a character arc in terms of dealing with his loneliness. Once he finally meets with Tom face-to-face, the story escalates from there. Dr. Robotnik's characterization is excellent as well and Jim Carrey absolutely nails it in terms of his interpretation of the character. His arrogance and egomaniacal ways are comedic, but also make him menacing and intimidating as well, which I like as a result.

The only major problem I have with the movie is its pacing. The beginning shows how Sonic as a child is separated from what looks to be his mentor, Longclaw The Owl. The Echidnas launched an attack on them and Longclaw resorted to having Sonic be transported to another world (Earth) in order to protect him. After that however, you don't hear about Longclaw again for the rest of the movie. You also don't get to see much of what Sonic had to go through when he was a child who got transported to planet Earth. I think more scenes of Sonic's childhood would've added a bit more to his character arc. The movie instead fast-forwards to when he's a teenager who's already built up in himself a complex where he's a happy-go-lucky jokester who hides his deep sadness (A sad clown essentially). The insecurities Sonic deals with in terms of his loneliness are portrayed mostly well. I really like seeing how Sonic deep down is emotionally insecure and in need of companionship. It makes me sympathize with him very much. I also wished that there were more scenes and interactions between Sonic and Dr. Robotnik in order to make their rivalry even more powerful and intense.

Despite the flaws this movie has, I think this is one of the best video game movies so far. I find it to be far better written and funnier than Detective Pikachu. The other characters like Tom, Maddie and the rest of civilians are also surprisingly funny and likable and the cast did a brilliant job with their acting without being too cringy. Ben Schwartz is especially excellent as Sonic and portrays his playful and happy-go-lucky attitude so well. There simply is a lot to like about the movie despite its flaws. I highly recommend this movie to people of all ages and especially Sonic fans because of its references to the video game franchise. Lastly, don't leave the theater during the credits since you're in for a surprise.… Expand

I went into the theater expecting the worst movie yet created. I was pleasantly surprised. It's definitely not "amazing" but it was entertaining and I had a good time watching it. I found this to be a good time.

I felt that Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz, Jean-Ralphio from Parks and Rec) had a surprisingly sympathetic backstory/character arc There are a lot funny lines in this that will also work with adults. EffectsI found this to be a good time.

Effects and action-wise the movie does a good job of depicting the hedgehog's superspeed and his attack abilities. Dr. Robotnik's robots are also well designed and I like their sleek look. I'm especially pleased that the studio took the time to change Sonic's appearance after the world first got their look at the attempt to make him more realistic. (Kind of creepy. Everyone's complaining about the human teeth, but it was his weird suction-esque lips that weirded me out.) He looks good in this. I think some of the lighting on him doesn't always match the scene but this is a nitpick considering that the computer animators had to redo the character within a short amount of time.

Bare in mind that this isn't the ideal Sonic story I'd have gone with. This takes place on Earth, so we see very of Sonic's distinctively imaginative video game world and most of his supporting characters. (Yeah, a lot of people don't like a lot of Sonic's growing number of ancillary characters, but I think most of us would've liked to see him alongside Tails or Knuckles.) One wonders why this had to be live action instead of entirely computer animated. This taking place on Earth is hurt more by the fact that this goes with a basic odd-couple-on-the-road-together-scenario. Moments where Sonic and his human friend (X-Men and Westworld's James Marsden) get into heated disagreements can feel forced. Also, Marsden's character has an at times frustratingly one-dimensional disapproving sister-in-law.

Schwartz was a really good choice for Sonic. He has an energetic delivery. Though Jim Carrey doesn't have the round physique of the original Dr. Robotnik, he does an excellent job as a completely egotistical madman. The actor has some of the best lines in the movie, maintaining his gift for improv while never feeling like he is out of character. Credit should also be given to Lee Majdoub who does a pretty good job acting off of Carrey as Robotnik's put-upon assistant.

Compared to the other recent video game-based family film Detective Pikachu, this isn't quite as good. The movie just isnt' as ambitious or innovative. Still, this is a nice film the kids should like.… Expand

What really made the movie for me though was my favorite character tails appearing in the end, it was such an amazing after credits scene, and robotnik slowly turning more and more into eggman was genuinly genius. Wholesome family friendly movie. I think Jim Carey did well in his role, and found myself smiling throughout the movie despite it being so corny.

Although there is not much to see about the video game world, since it mostly follows Sonic on our world, the movie has a good flow, without being to tedious. Everything is at the right dose, "not too much, not too less". Even Jim Carrey is, in my opinion, not overused ans super hyper, as I thought he would. For a kids movie, it doesn't dumb down it's plot, nothing is over-explained, no character overused. It's just right.

It really should be praised for what it is. A solid Video game movie. Only thing weird was, that the reaction of people, seeing Sonic for the first time, was pretty nonchalant, whereas the main human character, nearly had a stroke.… Expand

After many years of development hell and jumping from one studio to another, Sonic the Hedgehog is finally coming to the big screen and it is also the latest live-action video game movie after 2019’s Pokémon Detective Pikachu.

Sonic (Schwartz) is an extra-terrestrial blue hedgehog who can run at supersonic speeds. He has been living in Earth for 10 years after he escaped from his home world using a bag of rings that allowed him to travel to another world. During his time on Earth, he has been living alone in the forest of Green Hills, Montana and no one knows of his existence due to using his speed power to avoid being seen when he goes to town to grab supplies, doing some sightseeing and other activities.

Having spent all his life in isolation, Sonic become sad while playing baseball by himself. In the process, he accidently triggers an EMP which cause a huge blackout in Pacific Northwest. The US government reluctantly enlist Doctor Robotnik (Carrey) to handle the situation. While being after by Doctor Robotnik and his high-tech drones, Sonic hides in a garage which belongs to Tom Wachowski (Marsden), a local sheriff. Both of them scare out each when they first meet which leads Tom to shoot Sonic with a tranquilizer, causing him to lose the bag of rings in San Francisco when Sonic attempts to escape.

Once Sonic regain consciousness, Tom reluctantly agrees to protect Sonic from Doctor Robotnik. Both of them escapes immediately when he tracks down Sonic in Tom’s house. Together, they go on a wacky and crazy road trip to San Francisco to regain Sonic’s rings while being pursue by Doctor Robotnik, who has become obsess with hunting down Sonic and wanting to use his power for his own purposes.

Just like Pokémon Detective Pikachu, the movie is great and so much fun. There are many funny moments especially when it comes to Sonic fooling around and the movie does not use any cheap and lame jokes. The movie also stays very faithful to its source materials and made only minor changes in the movie. After an overwhelming negative reaction from fans on Sonic’s design in the first trailer, the studio chose to give Sonic a redesign which is much closer to his video game counterpart. This is a good and wise decision made by the studio because Sonic’s original design would have ruined the movie.

Everyone in the cast are amazing with their performances especially Jim Carrey. Speaking of him, Jim Carrey stole the show in the movie and his acting is very funny and outstanding. His performance is just like in his old days when he played The Mask, Riddler and Ace Ventura. He played the role of Doctor Robotnik perfectly and I could not think of anyone else besides him that can play the character. None of his scenes are boring and in fact, I could tell that his acting will bring some laughter from everyone. Ben Schwartz did a very great job in voicing Sonic perfectly. I am sure that Sonic’s voice actors from TV shows and video games are very proud of him. James Marsden also did a great job too and the chemistry between his character and Sonic worked really well and have great character development. This is also same for Sonic and Doctor Robotnik. Their rivalry is fun to watch on big screen just like in the TV shows.

While the movie is great and fun, there are also minor flaws. I felt the story could have been much better if they explore more of Sonic’s past which would make him more interesting character. His backstory is only shown in the beginning of the movie and then it was forgotten later on. Neal McDonough, who played Major Bennington, was seriously underused. He has only one scene in the movie where he spoke with Doctor Robotnik as seen in the trailer which I thought he was going to have a role in the movie. He is then never seen again after that. It was a waste of his talent for just one scene.

Regardless, it was totally a great live-action video game movie and Sonic fans will definitely love it. I am hoping to see more live-action video game movies in the future. Please do stay back for a mid-credits scene because this is something you cannot afford to miss it.… Expand

Believe it or not, despite a few hiccups when it comes to story direction, Sonic The Hedgehog is a whole lot of fun and actually pretty heartfelt and funny. I'd say it's the second best video game adaption right behind Tomb Raider (2018).

I grew up on Sonic playing it with my siblings on the PlayStation. The first trailer was a huge disappointment, but the second gave me hope that Paramount and Sega was listening to fans of the series. Was the movie perfect? This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you told someone that a sonic movie, let alone a live-action movie would be successful, let alone one that would beat a DC flick in only a matter of days, you would probably get laughed at...

and yet, this is the reality we're in, and I'm glad we are; Not only did paramount listen to fans to change sonic's design before release so he wasn't some weird abomination, but instead a faithful representation of the blue blur. The only gripe I could say I have with the film is that Dr Robotnick acts like a walking r/IAmVerySmart stereotype for most of the movie and by the end it get's annoying. But the action scenes, a lot of the jokes and especially the post credits scene with tails show that not only can video game films be great, but successful too. Hopefully future video game movies will be as great.… Expand

This is the best video game movie yet. It checks all the boxes for a movie that both children and parents can enjoy. There are some stumbles in the plot, but nothing major. My only real complaint is that Sonic flossed, bro.

Gotta Go Fast see the Sonic Movie.
I just saw it, the premiere was Feb 13th here in Portugal, I'm an huge Sonic and Pokémon fan but this movie is better than "Detective Pikachu" in my opinion, yes it has a lighter story but I enjoyed it more,Gotta Go Fast see the Sonic Movie.
I just saw it, the premiere was Feb 13th here in Portugal, I'm an huge Sonic and Pokémon fan but this movie is better than "Detective Pikachu" in my opinion, yes it has a lighter story but I enjoyed it more, my girlfriend that doesn't care about Sonic was laughing the entire movie, such a good fun time. We had a Blast! And I am sure that you and your kids will have a good time too.
You can feel that the entire cast had fun making this and with a lot of heart, can't wait for a sequel.
It's a solid 8 if you are a sonic fan, 7 if you are not, either way it's a good time.
Will see it again for sure, and please stay for the credits!… Expand

As someone who has a history with the Blue Blur, I was pretty sceptical toward the movie, because of everything about the movie, before it released, especially regarding the first trailer.

I'm happy to report that the movie is actually pretty good.

The movie luckily doesn't take itself serious at all. On the contrary actually. The movie is just fun and only at some parts does it try to tell a proper story, but most of the time it's just either funny comedy or feel-good moments. And Jim Carrey (who plays Dr. Robotnik) steals the show regarding the comedic aspect of the movie with his insane over the top performance.

What I especially love about the movie is that it not only adapts concepts from the Sonic games, but it reinterprets them to be fit for a movie. That makes the movie strike a good balance between being a faithful adaptation of the source material, but also being a good movie on it's own.

In conclusion, I liked the Sonic movie. It's funny, lighthearted and just a good time in general. My only real problem is that the first act is uneventful. The humor isn't that good nor does the story get along very interestingly in the first act.… Expand

The re-design was an absolute must. It made this movie. Easily this could have been review of a good movie that was ruined by bad character design. This wasn't the greatest movie in the world, but a movie you won't have a bad time with. No doubt you'll have a laugh at one or the many jokes. This is a really fun night at the movies. The bad parts of the movie were the fortnite dance Sonic performed, that was the only cringe part of this movie. For being a "kids" movie, I can let that slide because of the respect the rest of the film gave it's characters. 8/10, great watch, won't regret it, fun time.… Expand

Fun popcorn movie. There’s some cheese here and there (clearly aimed towards kids) but it seems like it was written by people who loved the games and Jim Carey brought his 90s chops back for Robotnik which was an awesome take on the character.

It starts in his world (green hill) but I think they renamed it. And there you see Sonic his movie origin. Later he come’s in our world. When he gets older he become’s friends with the donut lord. It’s a great movie made for the Sonic fans and the end credits are a great start for an awesomme sequel!… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think I went in with a different expectation of what the story/character would feel like, based on what I know from Sonic media preceding this, than what it actually came out to be. But that's okay.

For most of the movie it didn't really feel like Sonic. He was insecure and sort of helpless, and didn't really show any Sonic qualities or many heroics for that matter. There was a bit too much sub-plot with the cop and his family for my liking, and I feel that they didn't add as much Sonic aesthetic or action as they could have with this this glorious opportunity with the big screen. However, as the story progressed, Sonic became more confident and aware of his power, and the movie started to feel more what I was looking for: Sonic doing Sonic things.

With the intense final scenes playing out, along with those amazing mid-credits scenes (there are two), the movie definitely redeemed itself, and I felt really good as I left the theater (though I wanted so much more after all that!).

Though the movie as a whole was not what I expected and I was very turned off by the multiple (very apparent) Olive Garden ads and Sonic floss dancing scenes, I very much enjoyed it as a longtime fan of the series in my early 20's.… Expand

A great family movie for both sonic fans and people new to the franchise to enjoy. Really nicely done special effects and acting, especially with Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. Ben Schwartz is a wonderfully loveable Sonic! 8.5/10 would recommend !

O filme me surpreendeu por seus momentos marcantes.
Jim Carrey como Dr. Robotnik foi a melhor escolha.
O envolvimento do personagem com o mundo humano foi algo muito interessante, principalmente a amizade que ambos criam durante o filme.
Mas o personagem nem sempre aparenta estar presente no filme, por sua animação de vez em quando ser mal iluminada, com sombreamento.
Mas isso não chegou a afetar minha experiêncja no cinema, vale a pena conferir o filme!… Expand

Its a kids movie, but a good one at that. And its a hell of a lot of fun for fans. Not really understanding the hate, Jim Carey was great

Vale la pena ir a verla, la adaptación y los arreglos hechos a sonic tuvo buenos resultados. La historia es entretenida y para los fans no creo que queden haya decepción.

Okay, that was fun. A legitimately good, entertaining movie. Was it a game changer? No. Did it have flaws? Sure, yes. But did I sit there, the whole movie long, with a big grin on my face? Absolutely. Jim Carrey stole the goddamned show, asOkay, that was fun. A legitimately good, entertaining movie. Was it a game changer? No. Did it have flaws? Sure, yes. But did I sit there, the whole movie long, with a big grin on my face? Absolutely. Jim Carrey stole the goddamned show, as is only right and proper. This was full on 1995 Jim, where you take the goofy, chaotic neutral Trickster/Coyote that is The Mask and go full on sinister evil. That's Dr Robotnick.

Oh, and Raul Julia must now surrender the Overacting As A Video Game Villain belt. Dear god, no scenery escaped chewed. Actually that's very apt - if you liked Street Fighter, then Sonic is RIGHT up your alley!

The sonic redesign was fine, the effects worked. The script is very linear and the characters very broad - but I don't mean that in a pejorative way. They're very basic archetype characters that get the job done and do what they need to do and I found myself caring about them and their fates. That's a win in any book.

Is it flawless? No. Does it reshape cinema forever? No. But it's fun and full of heart and charm and is completely entertaining. The movie is exactly what it needs to be, no more, no less. I absolutely recommend the movie to any and all. It was a fun evening out.… Expand

Cute movie especially for families. There is some peril and light scares involving violence but very tame. My 7 and 5 year olds both have an understanding of the Sonic franchise enjoyed the movie. I thought it was actually pretty awesome, we all laughed at some pretty funny jokes and I'd welcome another Sonic film. Jim Carey was great too, and if you look at the reviews, you'll notice it works for the fans. Sonic is a damn Superman and they were able to film that.
Good old Jim is a GOD!
So the question is:who would win: the Superman or the God?

Fun, entertaining movie. Many nods to the Sonic lore! Vintage Jim Carrey was perfect for this movie, and Sonic and the other characters were surprisingly funny as well! I enjoyed this movie. It had a lot of really dumb moments, but that's okay, because Sonic the Hedgehog should be a bit dumb. It has some weird product placement, but you gotta pay for that Sonic redesign somehow.
