Rogue One might not have as much character as the other Star Wars movies, but i'm okay with it. Rogue One makes it very clear that its focus is on the story and the world around the characters, which is very well realized.

This movie does feel different to the main series but still keeps the Star Wars essence in there which was great as that was exactly what the movie was opting for and it was achieved well.

The movie lives up to the title of 'Star Wars' quite literally unlike the other films; we see lots of galactic warfare not seen in any other Star Wars film before. The film is also shot with lots of handheld-cam which gives a 'warzone'-type feel to it which I liked.
Other sides of the galaxy that aren't focused on in the main series are shown in this movie, showing other sides of the Empire and how they operate outside of destroying Rebels. It also shows how life is for regular people who aren't getting caught up in the war mess which helps to capture the feel of this being one big universe with many things going on inside it other than the story of the Skywalkers.

Felicity Jones was good as the lead character Jyn Erso; her character was explored well and was good to root for. There were some members of the supporting cast that stood out, the droid K-2SO with its charisma and the force-sensitive guy too. However the others, while nice to have around, didn't really receive much development and felt quite one-dimensional at times. I also found many characters to be under-used like Forest Whitaker's character for example who I think should've played a bigger part in the story and was necessary for a lot more of it I believe.

This movie blew me away visually; this has got to be one of the best-looking movies I have seen in a long time. It is absolutely outstanding to look at and I would happily have any image from this film as a screensaver or wallpaper. The CGI is also mind-blowing; there are a few characters who appeared in the original who were recreated with CGI in this film but it honestly looks amazing. You'll likely forget that the Special Edition ever existed.

The thing I probably loved the most about this film was the final act and ending and how it all tied together with the rest of the trilogy. I won't go into spoilers but I just have to say it was absolutely great and there was no better way to end the film.

I personally prefer The Force Awakens over this movie because even though Force Awakens reused the plot of the original film, it brought many new things like great acting, well-developed characters, emotion and great environments. This film had an original plot but didn't do as well as Force Awakens did in terms of characters and emotion.

Overall, this was a pretty decent movie with amazing visuals, a good lead character and also great references to other Star Wars films. My only issues were lack of character development for some of the supporting characters and that some of the characters were under-used in my opinion like Forest Whitaker's character and Darth Vader. This film has made me intrigued to see more of the anthology films and I hope they'll expand the universe more like this movie did.

It is a bit shaky at the begining - but has a great last third and that original trilogy feel to it.

The film contains a lot of action and answers tons of questions that were raised in the original trilogy. The characters are all very likable and they provide the perfect amount of humor to get the audience laughing occasionally. The amount of nostalgia in this film is very sufficient and will warm the hearts of long-term Star Wars fans. The only flaw in this film is that the plot is a bit uneven during the first act: the movie jumps between planets a lot, but I personally don't think it's a problem. Other than that, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a truly spectacular film and definitely feels like a Star Wars movie.

Pros:
- Fills in a major plot hole from A New Hope
- Nostalgia
- Comedic relief
- Likable characters
- Lots of action
Cons (if I had to pick one)
- Slightly uneven plot in act 1

Verdict:
Visuals/Music - 5/5
Plot/Characters - 5/5
Structure - 5/5
Acting - 5/5
Overall - 100%

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolutely brilliant choice of storyline, taking one or two lines from the original 1977 film and hooking in an entire film so that it segues seamlessly directly into the beginning of the original -- this film ends apparently only a few hours before the opening scene of the first "Star Wars". And that, very powerfully, gives us the feeling of having come "full circle" after forty years, after this Odyssey of disappointing sequels and prequels, here we are again -- back at the beginning! The real thing! Rogue One may well be the most magnificent prequel ever made, and it's the only "true" Star Wars prequel.

It gets off to a somewhat shaky start, and some of the side characters and subplots are half-hearted and unnecessary. If only those had been trimmed and tightened up, this would be a towering masterpiece like the original film.

NEVERTHELESS - once we get to the main event, and the battle drama unfolds in all its glory, all these minor concerns are swept away in a grand finale of wondrous spectacle, with a final sequence of utter genius.

The heroine's exit would have been more dramatic if she died wounded on the tower right after completing the transmission of the plans -- laughing defiance in the face of the Death Star commander on the screen just before they fired and blew her away. That's how I would have done it, haha!

The only downside is that the robot's jokes aren't that funny and one character gives up on life kind of inexplicably. He/she (not to give anything away) could have escaped danger but basically just said it wasn't worth the trouble. That was a head scratcher. Otherwise, this is a fantastic gritty take on Star Wars, with a brilliant ending. Jyn Erso is a great heroine, a bit more scrappy and relatable than perfect Rey; this movie also includes some of Vader's finest moments. Expand

This is what I imagine an UPDATED VERSION of the Originals being.

The Death Troopers/Shore Troopers were AWESOME.

Great planets...great space battles.

The people that said Last Jedi had the best visual must have AMNESIA..this blows it away (and so did Episode 3)!

The main hang up with most people were the characters...I'm hoping to see some of them either in Solo, Obi Wans movies or Rebels..but I thought they did fine..reading catalyst helped, too!

My main issue is where are the DELETED SCENES. I don't care if they wern't NECESSARY...neither was this film..neither are a lot of things..doesn't mean I don't want to see them!

I want to see more of Krennic, Vader, How Jyn got a gun on Yavin, etc.

This gets a 9.5 until I see some freaking deleted scenes..and a 10 it will be!

I round up, though!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Like many people, I went to rewatch this after being let down by The Last Jedi, and boy, did I forget how much I enjoyed this film. It's basically a war movie set in the Star Wars universe, and as such isn't limited by the trappings of a Star Wars movie (no opening scrawl! No Jedi or lightsaber battles - the closing scene is an exception, but more on that later) and I remember thinking this film represented so much potential for the Star Wars license now out of Lucas's restrictive hands - imagine, an entire universe of Star Wars stories being told on the big screen without being tied down by the restrictions of a main "Star Wars" Episode. Rogue One is a great start to this Anthology universe.

Spoilers abound!

THE GOOD: Yes, there are a lot of characters, and some have criticised that we don't have time to get to know them before they all die horribly and hence the deaths aren't emotional for us - but I didn't feel that way. I thought the characters worked - Jyn was a strong female protagonist who clearly had chemistry with her father Galen, Cassian served his purpose, and Chirrut and Baze were standouts to me (even though a great many stormtroopers had to play into the stereotype and die stupidly to establish Chirrut's awesomeness). I fell for K2SO - he grew on me and his end was tragic (perhaps biased by my fondness for Alan Tudyk and his character's equally tragic end on 'Serenity'). The crew's deaths worked for me, because I felt I grew to know them enough over the course of the movie to care about them - I know this wasn't the case for everyone. When Cassian tells Bodhi the pilot "You're our only way out of here" before the final battle on Scarif, I thought this was going to be another happy-ending no-stakes Rebel tale - didn't see the grim ending coming until K-2SO took a blaster bolt to the chest.

Darth Vader in the hallway at the end - sweet Christmas. I swear there was a mass orgasm in the cinema when that scene happened, and I'm not ashamed to admit I was part of it. Yes, shameless fan service - but it worked very, very well. The OG stormtroopers, Imperial sets and the Death Star also scratched many nostalgia itches for me.

Original Trilogy cameos - I felt these were more than fan service since Rogue One was supposed to be a prequel to A New Hope. I'll admit I'm big on nostalgia so all the cameos worked for me - I was overjoyed at Grand Moff Tarkin and even loved Dr Evazan and Ponda Baba (more poignant as Dr Evazan's actor passed away shortly after my viewing).

Finally, the cinematography in this film was amazing (one of The Last Jedi's strongest points as well). The wide shots of the Star Destroyer over Jedha City, the Scarif beach, the Death Star ominously peeking over the horizon, the view of Scarif from space through the Rebel flagship's floor, the space battle itself - I found it all breathtaking.

THE BAD:
Krennic as a villain served his purpose, but I felt he was underused. In the iTunes extras, director Gareth Edwards explains he couldn't make Vader or Tarkin the villain because they had plot armour and clearly survive the movie - this is probably why they had to cook Krennic up. Mendelsohn does a good job but is clearly upstaged by Vader and Tarkin whenever they are onscreen.

Forest Whitaker was wasted as Saw Guerrera, I feel - this character has a far more interesting arc in the Clone Wars and Rebels animated series, which explores his fanaticism and his hatred for what the Empire did to his sister. In this film he was a plot device.

I'm all for diversity in film - but while watching this film I could tell that the diversity was inserted on purpose. Not a bad thing, but it felt a little forced.

As with all Star Wars films, suspension of disbelief is required - stormtroopers still can't shoot for nuts, a whole battalion of them are defeated by a blind man with a stick in the beginning but by the end of the film they are a credible threat to a well-armed band of Rebels.

THE VERDICT: A thoroughly enjoyable film, and well worth Disney buying the franchise in my opinion (The Last Jedi notwithstanding). Spells a lot of potential for future Star Wars Anthology films - here's hoping Solo lives up to the mark.

But i didn't like the first part of the story, were we saw a lot of really different planet in a short time for no reason it seems. It was also less fun than the first trilogy (4-5-6).

But it grew on me, the character are a lot better than in the new trilogy, and at least as good as luke, leia, han, obiwan, lando, r2d2 etc.
The fact that we can see a lot of planets and what means living under the rules of the Empire is also great (labor camp, mining facility, etc.).
Also, there is a lot of allusion to Rebels ! I didn't see that at the time.

Definitely, the only good SW from disney, the 7 and 8 are fun and all, but empty, the 7 is a 4 with more action and less storytelling and backstory, the 8 is more original, but the characters are so bad and the 'story' so uninteresting, that it can't save this trilogy.

Seriously, if you have time to see only one of the new disney SW movie, this is the one you should look at.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Writing and dialogue are clearly the best out of all the series in Rogue One. One addition by subtraction is a different reliance on the Force compared to the other films, turning it into a grittier movie and less of a battle of super-beings. Most importantly, I've now got a new favorite droid. I kinda wonder what Lucas thinks of all this.

Rogue One definitely surprised me when I first saw it in theaters. I wasn't really thrilled by The Force Awakens, but Rogue One's originality and risk-taking helped me enjoy it!

Director Gareth Edwards does a great job of making you feel like you're back in the Original Trilogy era. The cinematography and the slightly gritty landscape of planets like Jedha and Wobani also add to that feel. Despite the little development they had, I found most of the characters in Rogue One to be extremely compelling even though we only got to see them for a brief time. My favorites were the possibly Force-sensitive Chirrut Imwe and the ambitious Imperial director and main antagonist Orson Krennic, who is played brilliantly by Ben Mendelsohn. I should also add that all of the actors in this film are great.

Rogue One does seem a little slow on the first viewing but that's mainly because the first act is built on introducing characters. Once the action starts around 30 minutes into the film (just an estimate), it really picks up. The film ends with the best space battle and perhaps the best ground battle Star Wars has seen to date. The D-Day inspired beaches of Scarif were a great pick for the final act.

Unlike The Force Awakens, which relies on nostalgic references and dramatic cameos of Original Trilogy characters, Rogue One manages to be a good film all its own. It has a strong cast of characters, interesting locations, and expands and improves the first Star Wars film in way I didn't think possible.

They spent about 1/10th of the movie introducing 8 or so main characters, and then the rest of the movie was a wild goose chase with terrible fan service. When they all died in the end, I didn't care at all. The only reason I scored this a 2 instead of a 0 is because of Vader's scene in the end. Expand

The characters were very memorable and well done. I think Jyn was the perfect protagonist for this movie and I loved her throughout. Chirrut Iwe and K2SO made the movie for me and I enjoyed their timely humor. The ending was fitting as we don't see any of these characters in a New Hope. The movies pace was perfect and I never felt bored and it never drawn out. All these elements combine to create the best Star Wars movie other than Empire. Overall, I would give it a 9.7. Expand

A spinoff was not necessary to the franchise, but it wasn't at all terrible like episode 3 of the prequel trilogy. Not a bad entry into this universe as it did give more insight into what happened prior in the other trilogies. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie starts in a secluded farm being attacked by the empire, where our protagonist loses their family. Well this is familiar, like the Force Awakens this movie depends on the established franchise for both material and audience. After telling the backstory of the female lead(the only backstory we get)a backstory that was both unneeded and incomplete, as the female lead explains what we were shown and weren't shown. We are then introduce to my least favorite character the male lead, with a accent so thick and whispers so much I couldn't understand half of what he said. The scene that introduces him tries to make him look like a person who is ready to make hard decisions and sacrifices, but it makes him look like someone is over his head and panics at the drop of a hat. We learn the rebels are sending in a team to get the plans to the Deathstar, from a pilot that defected. The pilot was captured by Whitaker's character who the rebels have had past(vague)dealings with. The rebels recruit the female lead to talk to him, because he took her in after she lost her family(Obi-wan/Luke). When female lead arrives at Whitakers' place, the pilot tells her that her father was the one who sent him to meet the rebels. That her father was building the Deathstar, and he wanted to inform the rebels of a weakness he put in it(retcon?). The planet they are on is attacked by the Deathstar and Whitaker decides to stay on the planet and dies because reasons? The Rebel team tells the rebel commanders about the deathstar and the plans the female leads father has. And they did't believe her, even though it was the point of sending her there in the first place. As the rebel team goes to meet the female leads father, rebel command tells male lead to kill female lead's father. This makes no sense as they don't have the plans yet and the Deathstar is working and dose not need him. Male lead decides not kill him because character growth? The rebel team tries to talk to female leads father, but rebel command bombs the place they are at. Which again makes no sense as the bombers have no idea if the rebel team is in the area, or whether or not they have the plans(plans they can't get if they're dead). and the bombers kill the dad before he give them any data. So the rebel team regroups at base, where the Rebel commanders are questioning fighting the empire and female lead gives a bland inspiring speech. Even though her reason for joining the rebels was because they forced her to, not to mention they kind of killed her father. So the team decides to steal the Deathstar plans from a empire data center, one you think the dad would have sent them to in the first place(it also has more plans than just the Deathstar's). Where a space battle occurs and a really tiny rebel ship pushes a Star Destroyer into another one(this is just silly that this works). Once they get the plans on a rebel ship, the Deathstar shows up and kills the rebel team on the planet. Even though there was no reason to as the rebels were losing and it was an EMPIRE planet.

So the movie ends. I couldn't remember any of the characters names, much less care about them. The comedic dialog was like someone telling a funny joke they knew, but was really bad at telling it. There are some bad CGI characters that did not needed to be CGI. This movie has the same funk as The Force Awaken. In that it tries to relie on the franchises' fanbase, but has to change or add stuff that doesn't belong in some odd attempt to say "we did it better than George Lucas". This movie is half way between The Force Awakens and Star Wars Rebels, if you like one you might enjoy this movies

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rogue One was not a bad movie, but was a Star Wars movie that I never really want to see again, and that's not something I should be saying. I'm not a Star Wars hater. I quite liked The Force Awakens, and is one of the few people who disagree with the opinion that it's too much like A New Hope. Rogue One was devoid of any good characters, and that's really disappointing. I can't even remember the name of the main character. These bland characters cause me to not care in the slightest when they died. I only cared when the robot died because so don't need to give a robot character development. You can't blame the director for this, because of things he has said in interview. That being said, the action scenes are cool, and the CGI was good. Darth Vader was awesome, and I liked how the tied it directly into the beginning of A New Hope. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolute garbage, even worse than the Phantom Menace. Every character is a cliche mess of terrible and cringey overacting. The only good part of the movie is the Vader scene at the end and when all the crappy characters die. The ending is the most cliche **** garbage I've ever seen. It's as if the writers read a book about the most overused movie endings in history and used every example they could. The main villain corners the hero, pointing his blaster at her. But instead of shooting her, he decides to give this long monologue first, and the moment before he pulls the trigger, a character who you assumed died (unfortunately he didn't) magically appears and shoots the villain, saving the hero. Instead of finishing him off, they instead walk off into the sunset while the villain is killed by his own creation. Also the last two living characters suddenly make out as they escape despite the fact of having zero chemistry or the slightest hint of attraction to each other throughout the movie. I know Disney likes to pander to children, but please don't use them to write your **** script. Expand

I take my Star Wars seriously as many fans do and I just found the main character to be so lackluster to try and carry this film. Underwhelming characters throughout the film made the film as a whole just 'alright'. The droid was very funny. Darth Vader was cool in the end, but his interactions with Krenig were somewhat cringy, but not as much as the CGI Grand Moff and Leia. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In the same way that The Force Awakens grew on me, Rogue One has really grown on me too, which is why I'm upgrading my score for this film from 4/10 to 7/10. No, it's not as good as The Force Awakens - its characters are kind of flat and it's nowhere near as fun. But after giving it a second viewing, Rogue One is honestly pretty good to me now. It's far from perfect, but it's a decent enough Star Wars experience with very strong visuals, great action scenes and a dark tone. What it lacks, unfortunately, is the colourful spark and charm that TFA provided. Too many scenes from Rogue One feel like a soap opera and it can come across as miserable and boring at times. So, for anyone who disliked it the first time, give it one or two more viewings and it may grow on you. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. overall rogue one is great. it is a fun sci-fi movie. it is a tense action movie. it is a thought-provoking war film. it is almost perfect as a star wars fill-in-the-gap story, justly expanding the star wars universe. easily better than the prequels, on many levels better than e7, and potentially up there with empire. much darker in tone and visually one of the strongest (if not the strongest) of all the star wars films to date. it does an excellent job of location, set, character & costume design. it captures, matches & improves upon the original 70’s future-long-ago look & feel; particularly compared to the prequels coming-off as too squeaky-clean and cartoony, where obvious green-screen 'sound-stage sets' clashed w/ cgi backgrounds that actually came-off as claustrophobic or making the actors seem lost-in-place, rogue one feels much more authentically 'there' and breathable, artfully integrating cgi & traditional effects with moveable characters. it even stands out compared to abram’s understandable but heavy-handed return to reliance on traditional sets & mechanics… for example, edward’s film improves & expands upon the rebel base yavin 4 locale, while keeping consistent with what you may have imagined was just off camera 40 years ago in e4; much more-so than abram’s disappointing teletubbies green hills + cement roads to simulate the rebel base in e7. many aspects of r1 kept me feeling like this was the star wars film i had been longing for, or at least adequately filling in many of the blanks the original insinuated. there is a sense of depth and history here missing from recent star wars films; diverse planets, ancient temples, exotic creatures & locales feel much more realized & alive, part of a larger universe than maz kanata’s isolated b&b cantina-remake. i’ve heard understandable complaints about the pacing, it does feel a little bit long at times, but i don't hold that against it and can't think of much i would cut. speaking of cuts, as others have noted several scenes or lines of dialogue from the trailers are missing in the final film, but mostly this is just a curiosity considering the theatrical cut is still almost 2.5 hours. there is also understandable chatter that some of the new characters are not as realized as one might ‘hope’ for. the acting and interplay between the two lead actors felicity jones & diego luna is excellent and among the best in any star wars film. if their characters leave you longing for more, it is a compliment rather than a knock, and the context of the film in the larger star wars universe perfectly justifies the amount of attention they get. my biggest complaints would be trivial: spoiler alerts: it is said that you are not supposed to notice a good movie soundtrack, but how can you say that about star wars? the fact that giacchino scored this and not williams is apparent in parts. a few times the music strikes up and you are expecting classic star wars to come belting out but it doesn’t, and feels like it falls a bit short. there are other moments though, where the soundtrack uses non-traditional instruments to provide a more other-wordy feel than previous films… it's cool that grand moff tarkin is back in a significant role, but he does look obviously cgi as others have noted. Vader has a weird, kind of glaring overhanging neck issue with his helmet which bugged me (and others), though otherwise it was great to have him back as a bad-ass post hayden era, the closing moments with Vader were great and among his best, if not short-lived & offer promise of more to come. Donnie Yen was a cool character but somewhat annoying with the overly-repetitive ‘hare-krishna’ force mantra, it was a bit ‘forced’ that he's so close to a jedi but technically not. a particular scene in jeddah surrounding an imperial 'tank' carrying kyber crystals felt especially clunky, the tank looked clumsy and out of place, that scene struck me the most as a mechanical set, seeing the tank struggling to maneuver on the ground with dozens of flying ships everywhere else was reminiscent of being stuck on the track of the bumpy indiana jones ride at disneyland. the new robot side-kick ‘K’ was mostly well-written and well-performed by tudyk and provided good, consistent comic relief. and major kudos to how many of the main characters were dead by the end of the film, that is lacking in so many movies and particularly bold of edwards, kennedy & disney. as an ‘old-head’ traditional star wars fan i found r1 to be less-than perfect, better than i expected, slightly more satisfying than e7, a huge improvement over the prequel trilogy, and ultimately excited for the future of the star wars universe being placed into the hands of new talent... ps: got to agree with AdamCM: "the best Star Wars since Empire" Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rogue One, directed by Gareth Edwards, is the first standalone film in the Star Wars saga and by far the most intriguing in the franchise. Set as a prequel to Episode 4: A New Hope, Rogue One brings in a group of unknown rebels led by Jyn Erso (played by Felicity Jones), as they travel to new worlds to find the plans to the Death Star, devised by her father Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelson). Gareth Edwards, who's other major films include 'Godzilla' and 'Monsters', brings in a new perspective into the Star Wars universe, combining characters and action so well, you'll leave the theater buzzing for more (even when you realize that it leaves you right off a New Hope). The plot to Rogue One is very simple, but it's the characters that really take this movie to new heights. The likes of Jyn, Captain Andor (Diego Luna), K-2S0 (Alan Tudyk), Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) and Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) make this movie worth watching (other than it being a Star Wars film). The droid, K-2S0, was the stand-out secondary character, able to bring great sources of humour while still being of use. But the real star of the show was Jyn Erso, with Felicity Jones doing a great job as the female lead. She is tough, rebellious and reckless, making her a well-crafted character, that has a great backstory.

Though Star Wars creates great protagonists, Rogue One's main antagonist Orson Krennic is definitely up there with the best. Ben Mendelsohn is powerful, able to give you a villain that any Star Wars fan would want. The action was also spectacular, with the final climatic fight one of the best in the franchises history, which is definitely saying something. Full of wonder and delight, you never drift your eyes away from the screen, with the special effects staff deserving full recognition as they recreate some of the characters of the originals.

It seems hard to not mention Darth Vader, so I will. He has little screen-time, but for every second he is in, he steals the show. One scene in particular was very special, as we see him in action for the first time in years.

Overall, Rogue One is a Star Wars movie that really takes you on a different journey from what you would be used to. It connects itself so well to the beginning of A New Hope, you could combine both movies with no problem. The cast and crew deserve the credit for the effort they made in creating a standalone film in the biggest franchise in movie history. Though the most 'war-like' of the 8 films, it still has moments of levity spread throughout, which reminds you of the original Star Wars spirit. It stands alone in the saga, and it definitely stands high in the huge and ever-expanding universe.

The episode III½.

So this is like a bridge between the original trilogy and the next three prequels. A story where the main characters from the original tale are not involved. Being a big fan of this franchise, I loved it. I did not expect big, so got entertained well. But pity that this wonderful characters are not going to return. This is just a one-off film. For seeing its overwhelming success, there could be a prequel, which has a very very slim chance.

The story was like that had started in a half way. That's why I wanted a prequel to tell us the Galen Erso's point of view story. When he has been taken back to the base to work for the Empire, his daughter is the only one who escapes from there. After a few years later the grown- up daughter, Jyn, end up on the rebel's side. When she hints a plan for them to strike the Empire, nobody considers it. But a rogue gang forms where they all does according to her saying. That's the story, and how it all ends are the rest.

The story was simple, but the action-adventures were good. Like what a 'Star Wars' fans want to see. The main drawback was there's no familiar faces around. Even the original franchise style of title and credit presentation was off the beat. Though there were cameos. Darth Vade, Princess Leia, R2D2 and 3PO, including a small lightsabre fight at the end, just to satisfy the fanboys. Overall a worthy film, otherwise it would have not earned one billion at the box office, making one of the top 10 of all time.

It's a bit of a watchable movie, although not terribly exciting. I just wonder how they were able to CGI Peter Cushing in the movie since he died decades ago. I'm giving it a 7 out of 10, because it still doesn't hold a candle to "A New Hope" or "The Empire Strikes Back". It's just part of Disney's money-making machine and the StarWars fanboys who weren't born when the original trilogy came out. Expand

A whole generation of people is growing up with crap Star Wars stories. Everything's too sterile, too kid safe, too merchandise ready. Seriously grinning from ear to ear with all the little references and easter eggs. Genuinely impressed. This gave me new hope for star wars films yet to be that maybe can fill the gap left by the absence of George Lucas genius ....

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie reminded me I can feel feelings. Of all the Star Wars movies, this one reminds me the most of actual war. The traditional use of animatronics with conservative use of computer animation and the musical score are great. I love the cast and their connection to each other, but what I want to focus on is how it is also the best at creating emotional attachment of all the movies. In the original Star Wars and the Force Awakens, they both blow up stuff and kill people with us the audience, having little attachment to what was lost (save one scene in episode VII) - the opposite is true here. As a survivor of the Iraq War and actually losing friends, this created the most emotion for me, due to seeing the similarities to the sacrifices of war and having watched the original trilogy (I try to forget the prequels ever happened). I highly recommend watching the (de-specialized edition of the) original trilogy then this, and try not to cry while high. If I was forced to rank this, subjectively, it is my favorite after Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back. However, it has a Grave of the Fireflies feel and is hard to watch a lot like the original trilogy and episode VII. Expand

One of the biggest reasons for its existence seems to be filling in a minor plot hole from the original Star Wars. Somehow, it still works. It's unclear who should get the bulk of the credit, because Tony Gilroy apparently took an overseeing role during extensive reshoots, but Gareth Edwards is credited as the only director. Props should be given to everyone involved, I think.

To get some negatives out of the way first, there are too many major characters, and with this being a more of a war movie than a sci-fi fantasy, they come off too chilly for my taste. They all have their moments, though, and serve the plot appropriately. The film shines most in its action. The set pieces are amazing. The climax features the best space combat we've ever seen, and a couple moments in particular will make fanboys go crazy. All in all, Rogue One is very enjoyalbe. The characters have enough personality to keep you invested, and the situations they find themselves in are thrilling.

Incredible cinematography, incredibly bad scenario.

Rogue One, as an adjunct entry to the Star Wars franchise is fascinating in terms of cinematography, casting, scenery and costume, character design and overall CGI quality. However, it fails horribly to deliver a scenario that is up to the Star Wars quality. The quality of the film itself as a motion picture is overshadowed by the horrendous premise and conclusion, combined with mediocre acting. Overall I applaud the efforts of the director, the CGI team and the casting team while advising to be more careful of the scenario and the acting job for the next spin-off Star Wars entry.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I find it amazing so many people like and even love this movie.
The worst problem it has is characterization. In a movie in which the main themes are heroism, villainy and the clash between two opposite forces representing antagonist ideals, it is impossible for me to get involved with characters this flat, uninteresting and with no sort of interaction amongst themselves. Aside from that, as far as storytelling goes, the movie is very clumsy, going from one scene to next with no connecting threads or imaginative way to link the set pieces together. Showing you the name of the planet where the action was going to take place was a bad joke and the most witless technique i have seen in my life. Then there is the fan service. This is probably the worst part, because they put in characters that didn´t do anything important and weren´t really a part story just to make fans happy, they did the same in The Force Awakens, but at least there they made them do something. The worst of all was the final scene with Darth Vader slaughtering rebels and people applauding it, when he is the bad guy, but of course, they didn´t give a hoot about the good guys in the movie, they just wanted to see the iconic Star Wars characters in action not caring a bit about how little sense it all made in terms of storytelling.

I could write for hours about all the flaws in this movie in terms of bad pacing, boring dialogue, and complete lack of imagination in execution.

Overall, I don´t think it´s a terrible movie, it´s just a completely uninspired, average sci-fi film with really good visual effects that takes advantage of Star Wars iconography to seduce non critical masses. But it really gets on my nerves when people say this is better than The Force Awakens and even the original trilogy, cause it´s not, it is one of the worst Star Wars movies along with The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.

Character development is fine (as for stand off movie not trilogy) but the biggest pro is the ambiance. We can feel the gravity of events that we are about to witness (in comparison Force Awakens - meh whatever) and they will define the whole galaxy! This is THE good old Star Wars universe as we used to know dark but yet heroic and not some colorful, happy and cringy fairy tale. Expand

But I didn't find it very entertaining. There's so little backstory given to the main characters and their personalities just didn't really stand out. They simply got ping ponged from one location to the next until all of them eventually died so as not to conflict with the rest of the movies. The dialogue shared between them is mostly related to advancing the plot as opposed to expressing who the characters really are. They seemed like copy and paste cut outs to me. The action scenes in Star Wars movies have always relied on some suspension of disbelief. But the ridiculousness was just too much for me in Rogue One. A droid casually chucking a grenade behind it's back as a gang of storm troopers round the corner. Donnie Yen one shotting a tie fighter out of the sky with a laser crossbow. A group of conveniently placed metal boxes laid out in front of the empire garrison's main door used by the rogue rebels to ambush dozens of hapless, brain dead storm troopers. And of course Donnie Yen walking across a raging battlefield without consequence muttering the same line over and over like a religious fanatic. Apparently the force is no longer needed for fighting people with it. As long as one has faith in the force they can just walk around in god-mode while the force carries out their unstoppable destiny for them. Oh, and of course there's the oft repeated trope of a main character appearing dead, only to then pop up behind the bad guy, just as the bad guy's about to shoot his gun, only to make it seem like the bad guy shot his gun, when it was in fact the good guy who shot the bad guy in the back, which is revealed to the viewer when the bad guy hits the ground dead. *Cue triumphant music* The movie was just dull and comically predictable for me. But I really wasn't that surprised. Rogue One is most likely all the franchise will ever be. A rehash of cliches, references to the original, comedic interludes and CGI simulations of scenes from the originals for nostalgia's sake. With that being said, I thoroughly enjoyed the darth vader scene at the end. That scene was **** amazing. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here is my reasoning for giving it a 3/10. The first act is boring, uninteresting beyond the fact it's Star Wars, and I don't care about anyone. The second act, is terribly written, characters don't make sense, but there's some good lines and some tension purely based on me liking Mads Mikkelsen as an actor and not wanting him to die because most other actors are doing a bad job. The third act is pretty good, everyone dies which is predictable and bad because the only character I liked was the robot, so I was sad when he died but nobody else mattered. Had to google Chirrut's friends name because I literally didn't know it from this movie because his character didn't mattered. The vader scene is cool, and all around good visuals. Here's the conclusion. I only liked one of the three acts, and I didn't love it, but the visuals were good all around so I can't give it higher than like a 33%. Literally almost fell asleep during this. Expand
