Solid all the way! Gritty and dirty, with shady charaters that does all they can to redeem them selves for the greater good. Absolutely awesome final 30 minutes that explodes on the screen. I love it!

Great Movie! Likeable characters, very well embedded into the original franchise without mindlessly copying it (like episode 7 and 9).

This is the best StarWars Movie since Episode 6 released.

Star Wars is a fairy tale. It's fantasy, not a dark Sci-Fi drama. Showing the dark side of the rebels and having them kill good people in a dirty war does not belong in a black and white story about light versus dark, good versus evil.
There's also the ending that felt forced. Like they had to find a way for it to end that way. And in some ways it doesn't make sense.
It is however still really good and worth seeing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's the most diverse Star Wars movie to date and of course diversity is our strength. I love how Jynn Erso falls in love with a Hispanic man, that'll definitely get her brutal white Imperialist ancestors out of her children. I loved how Jynn's smelly white feet gently pounded on wet soil in this film, I found that very cute. The battle sequences were amazing and the special effects were out of this world. Could've been better if there were some transexual's, homosexuals and pansexual's in it though as a reminder that diversity is a strength. Expand

The film features probably the best space combat scenes out of all the movies and for that alone it is worth seeing, it stays true to the SW lore (if you can live through the fact that Kyle Katarn was the one who stole the Death Star plans according to the old lore). Actually, now we are learning that every new trilogy is built for a new generation. My seven years old son loves TFA much more than any other SW movie. Like prequels were the best ones for the kids that grew up with them. Some are better, some worse, so subjective in some cases, all them are Star Wars, I just enjoy it.
Rogue One is really a new paradigm. It's a branch in a new direction, in a wider angle.
I enjoyed Rogue One in a new level, different. It's so fresh as classic, so funny as heartbreaking, so old as new. It's awesome. Tasty. I love every character from this movie. It's a story about the real war of the stars, the war of the people who dies for the cause. It was necessary to explain Star Wars from this point of view.
To me, Rogue one is 9/10 as a movie.

The movie takes risks and try to explore other elements that the new trilogy was not able. The movie has its own essence. The movie has a very good cast of actors, a very good plot where most of the situations are well-constructed and has coherence during the development of them. The movie even accounts with a better soundtrack mixed and done by Michael Giacchino. The only problem with the movie is that it begins slowly than normal, but then, it reaches an important level of narrative until the end.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rogue One isn't just my favorite Star Wars movie, it's one of my top 5 favorite movies of all-time. The story is extremely compelling and well-written and I thought all the characters, particularly Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor, were very well-developed. I could easily track why all the characters were making certain decisions and I understood why they behaved and acted certain ways in different circumstances. And while there's certainly a lot of great action in this film, the characters also have their moments to breath and really show who they are and what they believe in.

Jyn Erso and her relationship with her parents is the heart of the movie. She starts off so apathetic and resentful, and rightfully so, considering the trauma she suffered as a young girl. But once she realizes she's been wrong about her father most of her life, she knows the only way she can move on from her past is to find him and forgive him. And once she does reunite with him, she makes her complete transformation by putting her past behind her and embracing her hope and faith in order to fulfill her father's legacy. She might not care about the Rebellion as an organization, but she cares about the cause, her new family in the Rogue One crew, and especially her father's sacrifice. All the acting performances are stellar in this film, but Felicity Jones in particular did an incredible job of adding so much depth to Jyn Erso. The scene when she watches her father's message is arguably the best moment of acting in any Star Wars film, but throughout the entire film, Felicity added so many layers to Jyn's emotions to make her such a phenomenal character. Between the writing, directing, and Felicity's acting, Jyn Erso is without a doubt not just my favorite Star Wars character, but my favorite character in any film.

What also makes this movie a great Star Wars movie is that it took bold risks in terms of special effects. Star Wars has always set the standard for visual effects, and I like that they gave Tarkin such a prominent role in the film. It may not have been absolute perfection, but I have an enormous amount of respect for the creators efforts, considering that it took over a year to bring that character to life. Leaps of faith like this have to be taken, otherwise no progress is made with special effects, and future films will benefit because of the steps forward that Rogue One took with its visual effects.

Rogue One certainly has many moments of nostalgia, but for the most part, they all serve a purpose in the story. There's maybe one or two minor character cameos that weren't necessary, but this is a Star Wars film and moments of fun are necessary in order to make it a Star Wars film. If you were to eliminate more and more of those moments, the film would resemble Saving Private Ryan more than it would Star Wars, and that's ultimately not the goal of a Star Wars film.

In summary, Rogue One is a fantastic movie and I absolutely adore it. It's right up there with the Lord of the Rings trilogy as one of my favorites of all-time and I can't recommend it enough.

But as a movie all its own, as the Star Wars Story it's meant to be, it does fall a tad short on what could've been a very interesting solo Star Wars tale. It's intentions are good, it's build-up is strong, but the movie lacks focus or coherence for the first hour or so. But once our characters begin to set out on the mission of their lives, the gears amp up and so does the emotion. Rogue One goes out like some beautifully tragic pre-movie to a video game, in the most epic fashion imaginable. Including an escape sequence involving an iconic character, that's made to shock your nerves. But outside of it's final lap, Rogue One doesn't really have that appeal or rewatchable quality to it you'd think it'd easily have. Only for its send-off experience, but the movie as a whole as a story, and as an experience is all about the ending and not so much about it's foundation. Expand

For me, it was the last Star Wars film I can say I really enjoyed. Last Jedi and Solo left SO much to be desired, primarily because of Disney's need to inject politics into their films now. It just doesn't work for me. It’s not saying this movie suffers from it but we as fans can see it way more easily because if this. Lastly, what this movie lacked the most was the complex, well-developed and relatable characters. I don't care at all for the new shallow interpretations of the story presented in episodes VII and VIII. This story, the story so brilliantly told and acted in this movie is EXACTLY what I can fall in love with now that I am older.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mediocre at best.

This film is better than the main line Disney Star Wars films, but if we're honest with ourselves that not saying much.

The storyline is dull and predictable, the acting is passable and the visual effects are good.

My biggest gripe with the film is the way the "bad guys" (the Empire) are portrayed. Instead of the Heroes overcoming incredible odds against a tough enemy, but ultimately being victorious, the Empire is this film are instead bumbling morons who consistantly either do nothing or act to directly thwart their own plans. The best example of this is when the fleet turns up around the data core planet, the Rebels quite literaly could not have won if the Empire fleet had not turned up and ruined everything!

Also the blind monk on the beach scene... to quote Han Solo "thats not how the force works!"

The biggest saving grace of this film is the final scene on Tantive IV with Darth Vader. Possibly one of the best action sequences set to film and providing a clever and much needed tie in to the original trilogy.

Although by no means a must watch, if you find yourself at a loose end there are certainly worse things you can watch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Personal favorite movie because I really connected with Jane Erso. I loved the change in her character once she finds her place within the universe and finally accepts what her mission is. I enjoyed all of the action scenes, the musical score, the visuals, the differentiating ideologies that are trying to get the mission completed. I like all of the viewpoints on life and how to keep on living despite their being no hope or little hope. I will by this movie on Blu-ray and have it as part of my movie collection. Doesn't shy away from the realness of war and there is no Jedi to save anyone. Its human, it feels real and I enjoyed watching. I loved it and I will continue to love it! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Back in 2016 i thought this would be terrible, was it? HAHA no. Rogue one had to be one of the most underrated star wars movies and one of the most underrated movies of 2016. great action, AMAZING cgi as well, its what you would want from a star wars movie. But there is 1 issue, the characters aren't developed (except for jyn) like in other installments in the series. i can understand if you don't like that. But that's not the point of it, they weren't meant to be in any other movie, it makes sense *spoilers* that they all die, for a heroic sacrifice to the rebellion, but the gritty and dark theme of the movie plays out perfectly. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rogue One is a solid movie all around. In terms of the new Disney-verse of Star Wars, this movie is my favorite, hands down. This movie captures a story that was actually never really talked about in the OT - getting the death star 1 plans - but its results were far reaching. R1 had a 100% unique story, a bunch of new characters, cameos from Clone Wars & Rebels, and a whole bunch of ships -- new and old. What really sets this apart from the other Disney-verse film at the time, Episode 7, is that the characters actually do NEW things that we've never seen before, not copy and paste the OT. The 3rd act of the film contained a scene that was every Star Wars fan's dream and the film wrapped up in a neat, self-contained story that fit pretty snug in between episodes 3 and 4.

It has its flaws, of course. The pacing of the movie was a serious black eye on the film. The years/settings/missions blurred by really fast in the middle of the movie, making it hard to keep up with. The 3rd act cleans this up, but you can tell there were development problems mid-film. The main characters were all cool, but there were so many new folks introduced at once that I could hardly even remember their names at the end of the film. I think they should have shrunk the crew down by 2-3 people and that would have still been enough to get the mission done.

All in all, this is a solid film and I walked out of the theater with joy. I really felt like it added a big piece to the Star Wars canon. It's the only Disney-verse SW film I've bought on DVD and I hope they try to repeat this same formula in the future.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My god, this movie polarized so many people. People called it trash - put it in league with Phantom Menace - others thought it was the best thing ever - some of those diehard fans picked it as tied for favorite with Empire Strikes Back. In my book, it's neither of those. The first couple times, I was impressed, but probably because it's such an uncharacteristic Star Wars film and is not afraid to kill everyone off. It does not hold back for the sake of happiness and little kids - I'll give it that. It ends off in devastating fashion (kind of like a Black Mirror episode), with everyone dying for what very well could be nothing - it gets real, and the main criticism is that it's almost too predictable. But it turns into something bigger than just a Star Wars episode - which I love about it. It has more meaning and depth than most of the past episodes, and unlike its predecessors, has a coherent, honest, underlying message. It serves its purpose - to bridge the gap between episode three and four - and does well - cutting the BS and doing so efficiently and believably, but almost too well - as in the other episodes are undeserving of this as a bridge - if all the episodes are one long story, they did not set up for this chapter well, at all, and this episode has to work to fill in holes created by later installments. This is not the fault of this particular franchise, given the circumstances and the timeline in which the movies were made. Nevertheless, it feels standalone, or like it belongs in a different story. The main criticism, is that the purpose and motive for everything is almost not enough and I find I consistently have to ask myself 'Why?'. In other words, the film doesn't convince me enough of the devastation and pain they're suffering and how much a glimmer of hope means to them. I'm just supposed to assume some of these things and roll with it, as I've felt with other episodes. So, do we blame the movie for this shortcoming? No, not entirely, I don't think. As I see it, this is a chapter in one long story, and it may be the fault of the shi**y prequel trilogy, but let's not put the blame entirely on the shoulders of the trilogy - Rogue One still had the potential to do more about it - and they didn't. We learn about the stories of a couple characters, but even then, we don't know much. We put our (somewhat) blind/uninformed faith in these characters and what they believe in, but perhaps they feel the same about their cause - and maybe this is part of what the film attempts to convey - that certain ideals of hope and freedom - or rather, hope for a better future for others, that doesn't include them, trump whatever very limited understanding of the movement and the motives of those at the helm of it. As they learn to blindly accept that they won't be the heroes of the story and are, in reality, small cogs in a much bigger plan that treats them as such, and which they don't entirely understand, but fight for it anyway, applying their own personal reasons - which they may very well consistently question and remind themselves of. The one moment they lived for, their purpose is also the moment the realization that they really are cogs is most evident - they serve their function, which, depending on how the rest of the machine works may or may not bear fruit. It did of course, but barely, and unbeknownst to them. In the end, they and their suicide mission means very little - a bit of code (or hope, however you want to look at it) - but just enough that maybe life was a good bit less shi**y than it could've been for many people - certainly something worth living for. It's sort of like Interstellar meets Black Mirror.

So in addition to the underlying meaning, it also begs some interesting questions - really uncharacteristic for most Star Wars movies. In hindsight, perhaps my biggest criticism is that it's too good. It overachieves and slides seamlessly into the fourth episode, but did too well as a movie to really fit into the rest of the series. So is it's purpose to be a great movie, or to be a great (more like one that makes sense) chapter in the entire story of Star Wars? Either way, I think it did well. For the former, it needs a proper introduction. For the latter, it needs more conflict, action, and purpose in the overarching story, and needs to take place close to Revenge of the Sith.

It's refreshing to find a unique plot and meaning in a Star Wars movie. Though I said it needed more action to be a proper Star Wars movie, it's also refreshing and satisfying to find they could accomplish so much with a lot more finesse and grace, and a lot less gratuitous action. For once it wasn't the guy with the best lightsaber, it was thoughtful strategy that ultimately helped them on their mission. And though they died, and were the ones being blown up, instead of making all the chaos, what they did ultimately had much more significance and was crucial later on.

8.5+/10; strong B+

I have never seen a movie when after I saw it I really can't remember much about it. I don't remember any characters names outside of Vader and Tarkin and they were barely in the movie.

This has to be the most forgettable movie I have ever seen or at least in memory. I can't say I hate it ,for sure I can say I didn't like it. So this is tough to score and I even watched it a second time and when it was done I still couldn't remember much of any thing about the movie. I almost want to give this movie credit for being able to pull some thing like that off. To be able to make a movie that is orderless, tasteless, no texture, just plain forgettable is really some thing to me because normally any movie I could give you a real opionion on.

I mean I'm not even going to tell you to not see it or avoid it. This is not like TFA or TLJ which are just awful movies which I could easily say there are pure trash. I don't know what more to say really. See it don't see it I don't know.

It adds a richness and depth to the story of the original Star Wars while still serving as an engaging, character-driven drama with a leg to stand on its own.

As is to be expected at this point, Rogue One brings the world of the original trilogy into the 21st century with realistic, action-packed spectacle. The CGI blends in seamlessly with the practical sets and effects and gives an epic, lifelike, colossal scale to the galaxy far far away.

Although the characters are not as fully realized as they could be, the film sets them all up in such a way that it is understood who they are and what is important to them. It makes the most of the limited room for character arcs by establishing their individual goals and priorities and basing the story around their collective journey toward redemption and personal sacrifice. It's a unified character arc that is shared by the entire team of protagonists, and it's very touching. The story succeeds because it does what the Star Wars films have always done so well: it tells a complex story about people and their nature, not just about political events.

Where the film suffers most is in its antagonist. The Empire and its leaders make some unfathomably incompetent decisions that deflate a great deal of the tension from the story, particularly from the climax. Some of the dialogue is also a bit heavy handed and overly-dramatic, but most of it works quite well. It doesn't detract too much from the experience as the actors' competence largely makes up for the few screenwriting flaws.

Rogue One does drag a bit at times and is not quite as compelling as it could be, but it has plenty of charm, humor, and eye-popping action to make it fun. In addition to that, the themes of redemption and selfless sacrifice are handled with somber tact that makes this among the most thought-provoking and endearing of the Star Wars saga.

It did its job of filling the gap of time that we don't see before A New Hope starts, but it's not without its flaws. The biggest problem with this film, which leads to other problems, is that we only get one movie with this cast of characters. This was something that was set in stone from the beginning, so they had to try to make us care about these characters in a pretty tight running time. And, unfortunately, they don't execute this task as well as they could have. The rest of the movie is pretty damn good. We get some classic Star Wars scenes, and some interesting plot lines. There's also some excellent comedy in this film (much better than than Diney's other two Star Wars films). But, the characters are pretty shallow as I said and it's hard to truly care about them when the movie expects us to, and as a result the film isn't as good as it could have been. Expand

This for me is the best Star Wars movie ever, everything is so good, the action, the connection with the old movies, for todays resources this movie cannot be better, pity that the same director did not make Episode VIII, so until this point for me Disney was not destroying Star Wars. Everybody says "Disney destroyed Star Wars" but this is only because of Rian Johnson who really destroyed the saga forever with that ridiculous ep. 8 movie which is worst best seller of the history, Leia flying, stupid jokes like the "iron", those ridiculous birds, in that case better watch Spaceballs and poor Luke denigrated to the worst garbage of human being and with powers ridiculous for a Jedi, he died stupidly, please remake that film and put Rogue One director Gareth Edwards, Episode VIII should never had existed.I don't say that ep. 8 is a bad movie because Luke died, in Episode VII Han Solo died and killed the possibility to ever play together with Luke again, but anyway I liked the movie as it was a decent plot, if you are going to kill a super idol do it for a good reason, like it was done in Episode 7, not kill him because he got tired after use too much Jedi Power and leave episode 9 with nobody, even with a good plot you should be very careful if kill the Luke, now everybody is dead as Carrie Fisher died in the real world, whats the point of Episode 9? Who will be the stars, Chewbacca and androids? Unless they bring Lando to episode 9 for sure only teenagers will go to cinema to watch it. Fans of SW say "pretend ep.9 never existed" but it is difficult, specially that there will be an episode 9. Why Gareth Edwards does not make Episode IX and the next trilogy? I liked episode VII, but Rogue One is superior in every aspect, so why not bring the best guy for the next trilogy? I cant imagine how Gareth Edwards can fix the mess that Rian Johnson made, but I wouldn't be surprised that such great director would be able to find a way and give back life to the Star Wars Saga, Rogue One is so perfect, the last part of Darth Vader is the best of the best, also the CGI characters were awesome! I honestly don't get why everyone loves this movie so much? Is everyone just enamored by the visuals? I think that's the case because the visuals in this movie are amazing. I think that's the case because the visuals in this movie are amazing. And sadly that's the best part about the movie. The characters have no personality, they just do cool stuff and they have haunting pasts that we learn little to nothing about. Need I mention the annoying cameos? It's just like, really? Did we need that? No. What we need are real characters that we can root for. Instead of that, we get huge action sequences and useless cameos. Yes, the action sequences in this film are amazing, but do we care if one of the characters dies? No. It's really sad that this film had so much potential, I mean we finally see the Rebellion for what is and not this completely good thing. But this potential goes basically nowhere because of the bland characters. If this film had good characters we would have a great film, but here we are. C+ Expand

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a competently made Star Wars spin-off with a ton of lore and an amazing third act that will please the fans of the infamous franchise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Amazing movie. At first, when I heard about it, I'm just like "Just another Star Wars re-run or some stupid remake or something." But when I watched it, wow. I was shocked at how good the movie was. It perfectly fits in between movies 3 and 4, and it explains everything to when Mon Mothma says "A lot of rebels died to retrieve this information." Expand

The film is very well shot. Scenario and the actors' game at altitude. The plot of the film is complemented by the Istria shot by George Lucas.

A great **** movie told in more of a darker serious tone compared to the lighter bubblier versions of the Skywalker movies.
