Tarantino has succeeded in making not only a handsome and nostalgic movie but also a challenging and subversive one.

It’s both aimless and yet meaningful with the commentary on the new era in Hollywood. The movie pays tribute to old Hollywood, film making, Sharon Tate, stunt work, and actors. This is perhaps Tarantino’s most personal and mature movie his made, until the last 10 minutes (which I love) goes complete ape sh*t.

I can’t think of any other director where the passion and love for movies is so transparent through Tarantino's craft. He’s such an old school film maker that he and Martin Scorsese are the last golden age directors, as every new release feels like an event. In this movie, Quentin presents 69’ Hollywood at its peak, as he remembers it from his childhood. He manages to rebuild classy LA thanks to the crew and creative team.

There’s a couple of scenes where Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), drives around LA and there are long shots that shows off the environment and it’s amazing the amount of detail and effort went into the setting - with Robert Richardson brilliant Cinematography bringing it all alive.

Leonardo DiCaprio was absolutely excellent as the fading Western star, Rick F**king Dalton. Dalton, a self-centered, yet vulnerable actor that you both laugh and pity. I will often forget about DiCaprio comedic chops, something similar to Ryan Gosling. I also like the subtle stutter that’s sprinkled through out, which is sad when given some thought that it’s something he’s got to deal with. There’s a heartfelt scene where Dalton tells his young co-star about a book his reading and mid way through explaining the story he realises it mirrors his life, and breaks down in tears with me crying with him. Yep, I teared up in a Tarantino movie. Leo was the pulse of the movie.

Brad Pitt was amazing as the deadpan and cool Cliff Booth. This is probably my favorite performance from him. Cliff’s main character trait is his strength and he demonstrates it multiple times, but leaves the scene before anything can escalate. The chemistry between Leo and Brad was electric. Pitt was the meat of the movie.

Margot Robbie was an absolute delight portraying the late Sharon Tate. Despite her slim screen time, but whenever she has screen time, I couldn’t help but smile. I instantly fell in love with her and it’s painfully to think something so sweet and pure could be taken away from us by brainwashed zombies who don’t deserve a life, just a jail cell. I thought her portrayal in the movie was a beautiful tribute and how they handle her gives new life into her legacy.

There’s a great scene where Sharon Tate watches a movie in cinemas that’s she’s in, but instead of Margot Robbie re-creating those scenes, they just show the real Sharon Tate in the movie. Now people were left a bit confused over this decision, although it’s clear to me that erasing the real Tate out of the movie would be more disrespectful to her memory, so leaving her in is a touching tribute to her career and her work. Robbie was the heart of the movie.

The other supporting cast all did terrific with the little screen time most of them had. Kurt Russell makes a welcoming return as a character that I assume is Stuntman Mike from 'Death Proof' - either way still a welcoming presence. He’s also the narrator and I find it hilarious whenever he tries to pronounce Italian movie titles. Al Pacino was a blast to watch as the tight and yet colorful producer. Mike Moh portrayal of Bruce Lee may have sparked some controversy recently, but I thought he was entertaining regardless and I don’t really think it mocks his legacy at all. I mean, this is the same director who made a four hour movie honoring the legend. Margaret Qualley was crazy good as the hippie girl who’s brain washed into a cult family. It’s crazy to know that Damon Herriman has played Charles Manson twice in the same year and month for this movie and the TV show ‘Mindhunter’, which you should totally check out by the way.

After letting the film sit for awhile, there’s so many memorable lines that I would often catch myself recreating just from memory after seeing it twice. There’s so many great moments as well. The lights of LA coming to life at the dust of dawn, or the suspenseful scenes that actually got me feeling tense watching it. Without spoiling anything, but the Spahn Ranch scene where the Manson family stares down a defenseless Cliff Booth as he tries to speak to an old friend was terrifying - reminds me of the opening scene of ‘Inglorious Bastards’, in terms of building up tension that you wait in anticipation to explode.

And of course with it being a Tarantino movie, the music is lost treasure revived for a modern generation. Always fantastic and incredibly catchy. I can’t think of anything better than Cliff driving around LA with the song ‘Bring a Little Lovin’ playing in the background.

But in my opinion, it is an excellent movie. The story of friendship is touching, but how it addresses the duality of man is by far the most interesting part of the movie. In life, don't we want to have the success and acclaim of Leo the actor? However, don't we also want to be as cool as Pitt the stuntman? We want a combination of acclaim and charisma, but we don't want to be told what to do like an actor, and we don't want to get no credit like the stuntman. Overall, great movie. Maybe it's recency bias, but I think it is Tarantino's third best film. Expand

Tarantino's ode to the 1969 Los Angeles of his youth is an alternate history that pretty much everyone can get behind. The end of Sixties innocence is pushed back into a time machine that meanders through the streets and studio sets of Hollywood, as network television is depicted as a boon and a threat at the same time to the working actor. Some of the scenes are almost excruciatingly long but like Wes and PT Anderson, best just to trust the process.

Pitt and DiCaprio are terrific, but Margot Robbie steals the show without much dialogue. Her Sharon Tate is kind of perfect. A sub-par but beautiful actress who is a beam of light that wants nothing but happiness for herself, Roman, Jay, and her unborn child.

The violence at the climax is satisfying, but upon reflection also deeply troubling. We are voyeurs to an outcome opposite to what history has told us. And yet we are still savagely rooting for payback that never was or will be ever realized.

It's been years since I read "Helter Skelter", one of the great non-fiction crime novels of all time. It was challenging while watching the film trying to recall some of the true details of the book, as Tarantino gleefully tip-toed the historical line right up to the end.

That said, this isI am a huge Tarantino fan and I don't begrudge him for trying to make a movie that doesn't take you for a non-stop rollercoaster ride like Django, Kill Bill, or Hateful Eight and does try to subvert your expectations a bit. That said, this is probably heavier on the character development and lighter on the actual typical story arch, but this movie seemed to lack the signature cool vibes of a Tarantino movie while having pretty much all the coolest people in Hollywood, set in one of the coolest points in history, with a pretty typical cool Tarantino soundtrack.

What I mean is that there aren't as many immediately catchy bits of dialog you commit to memory and become part of your vernacular. There also doesn't seem to be as tight of a story as there usually is in a Tarantino movie. This is more like Tarantino's Inherent Vice or Slacker. Both are good movies that just never really settle into a groove that feels like it fits on a subconscious level. It feels like the events of a few days followed by a few montages to pass the time of 6 months in the middle and you always feel like you're at the beginning of a story that doesn't quite go where you think it will or really pull you in. It's almost like Tarantino deliberately tried to subvert your expectations but doesn't replace them with something better. They just get replaced with something.

Visually, it's spot on. All the classic cars, the crazy driving away from Rick Dalton and Roman Polanski's house, down the switchback road with the hairpin turn. The downtown Hollywood scenes, the look of the mock TV shows, all of the visual aspects of the movie are perfect. That said, I think this is like Jackie Brown in standing alone as a slightly different feeling Tarantino movie. It's not as dry as Jackie Brown, but it feels more sedated in the ways that Jackie Brown does. It seems to explore themes of getting older in the ways Jackie Brown does. The violence, while definitely there, seems a little more turned down throughout the movie like it is in Jackie Brown.

Tarantino's love-letter to the end of the Hollywood Golden Age is a sumptuous feast for the eyes and ears, with a fantastic ensemble cast all working together to create the illusion of 1969.
As a piece of 'film-making' this is amazing cinema. As a movie, it's pretty crap if I'm being honest.
Beyond the way it looks and sounds, the great acting across the board and the attention to detail.. The film is missing a story, and a coherent plot.
At 160 minutes, the film is at least 40 minutes too long. There are innumerate stretched scenes, extended tracking shots, pointless dialogue and flashbacks that serve no purpose.
Even the finale where QT finally throws in some violence and blood seems forced, and because the rest of the film is very tame in that respect it doesn't fit the established ideas.

Overall it's a film I think everyone should watch once, but I suspect that they (and I) wouldn't be watching the film again for a very long time.

Well however many films he intends onHere it is, the moment we’ve all been waiting for, the ninth film by Quentin Tarantino for anyone counting…because he’s only making ten allegedly…so this means we’re only getting one more….allegedly. Well however many films he intends on making none will feel quite as personal as Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood.

Set in 1969 LA, Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) are struggling to find fame in the final years of Hollywood’s Golden age. Desperate to stay as part of the Hollywood scene Dalton can’t handle the fact that he’s becoming a has-been actor as he strives for perfection. If you thought DiCaprio’s scenery chewing performance in Django Unchained was entertaining to watch then you’re sure to love him in Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood. DiCaprio and Pitt make a great double act, a joy to behold, Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate was also superb casting. A star studded cast (not you Lena Dunham) that’s sure to bring in a crowd. Now I’m not sure what happened in the editing room but there are more than a few scenes from the trailer that you won’t see in the film itself and FYI for anyone who got excited about seeing Mike Moh as Bruce Lee in this film, if you’ve seen the trailer then that’s about it. There are moments that are painfully dragged out, I just didn’t feel we needed to sit in the car with the characters while they’re driving around again and again. I couldn’t help but be reminded of The Hateful Eight, scenes that linger on for longer than necessary, I feel at some point the story needs to get on with it. Tarantino is enjoying filming a scene so much he almost doesn’t want to move on to the next scene. The film is set during the Manson murders so the constant sense of unease is building towards disaster. I will also admit I was one of those concerned few who was apprehensive about Tarantino taking on a film set during the Manson murders but he handled it in a way that was not only unexpected but thoroughly entertaining. If you’ve seen Inglourious Basterds then you know Tarantino doesn’t exactly take historical accuracies into consideration and the same can be said for Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood. Best not to dwell on that and just go with it.

Yes I’d consider myself a Tarantino fan, though in my opinion he reached his peak long ago. And although there’s a lot I like about his style of filming making, the shocking violence, the well-written characters having conversations about seemingly nothing. I could definitely survive without the foot obsession and the pointless narration. I’m sure if you ask anyone they’ll each rank their favourite Tarantino films differently (but I’ll fight anyone who thinks Death Proof is anywhere in the top five) I don’t feel Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood is quite up there with Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill. Each to their own, no one divides an audience quite like Quentin Tarantino, despite being too long it’s entertaining and funny, with perhaps two of the best performances from DiCaprio and Pitt. Highly recommended for all the Tarantino fans.

The main story is about an aging actor (Leonardo di Caprio) and his trusted stunt double (Brad Pitt) struggling in 1969 Hollywood. Both di Caprio and Pitt's characters are fictional. What's real though is the inclusion of plenty of real-life characters such as Roman Polanski, Sharon Tate, Steve McQueen, Bruce Lee and the members of the notorious Manson Family. The movie's story doesn't exactly follow the real-life actions of the Manson Family members culminating in the murders of several people, so the script takes an alternative history route where none of it happens. Just like Inglurious Basterds featured an alternative history script by having Hitler assassinated well before Germany's actual defeat in World War II.

This film being set in 1969, di Caprio's face has been digitally inserted into footage from movies and TV series of the era as if his character starred in them, and I liked that. There is also tons of pop culture references of the era.

"Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood" is by far Quentin Tarantino's movie with the least amount of violence. You almost see none of it as in previous Tarantino movies. Only in the end does Tarantino's trademark violence show up, and it's too brief by his standards. But it's still hilarious nonetheless.

My only complaint is that this movie is kind of a too happy bandwagon where everything just goes on auto pilot and little does actually happen. Moments like Pitt's character beating Bruce Lee, or di Caprio delivering a powerful performance in the set of Lancer, are far and few in between. Margot Robbie (portraying Sharon Tate) is merely present in the movie and Tarantino does nothing more than just show us how beautiful she is.

All in all, "Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood" is a fine summer movie directed by Quentin Tarantino, but don't go in expecting to watch another high-octane movie like Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Inglurious Basterds or Django Unchained. I hope Tarantino's next movie will be better than this.

When comparing "Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood "with the director 's other films you realize that this is not his most outstanding film. But the picture itself seemed so light and bright that it feels like Tarantino was shooting it to relax. Unfortunately my initial expectations have been somewhat overstated, so I can 't call this film the best in 2019. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Birds Of Prey doesn’t really look that great, and to put it before Hollywood was such a weird choice… Anyway! SPOILER WARNING FOR THE WHOLE REVIEW.

Time for a GHOST STORY (not really, sounded cool tho). As I had the pleasure of watching Tarantino’s latest,Once Upon A Time In Hollywood,in IMAX,every second was slowly graduating to the monster of Tarantino’s Feet Obsession crawling up our sleeves to ensure we had the creepiest time of our lives...In IMAX with a movie aiming for 1969 craze.
But all jokes aside, this may be the most insane movie of 2019 for a myriad of reasons, mainly for the fact that this weekend I’ve seen movies with such unexpected endings. This one checking every box it set in its 1st and 2nd Act,and still ending it with a huge smile on my face. Tarantino’s look of 1969 Los Angeles is stylish,on-beat and breathes of such campiness and dirt-ass-ery...whatever it is.
What’s even greater is that this can also be interpreted as a love letter to Western Movies, since several sequences we see Rick Dalton (played by DiCaprio) acting in a scene the crew’s filming and still feeling like we’re in a Western, even if we know it’s a scene they’re filming.
And so much more - the Soundtrack rocks, the Villains work...for the brief seconds they’re in (even if it’s unrealistic to see a group of hippies plan a murder for 6 Months, right after Cliff Booth, played by Pitt, kicked that guy’s ass),the acting rocks, the Bruce Lee cameo kicks so many asses and the fact that they reference Italian Cinema as a terrible, really bad genre (even if it’s mentioned for just Westerns) speaks so many volumes with the garbage quality movies thrown into our cineplexes every second (rarely we get a La Vita è Bella or Lucio Fulci in here) and I don’t know why,but I love that Sony,of all things,is also part of the story (it’s mentioned with Screen Gems, and we see Rick outside Columbia Pictures at one scene).
It also helped that I saw some Swinging Sixties this week,as you can smell some of that inspiration in here (or,at least,in checkbox mode) - Having Fun seeing a guy go somewhere with an unexpected ending (Easy Rider),a nice little day in Los Angeles without a big saving the world plot and, instead,a small plot about a guy still trying to achieve the impossible (Model Shop) - You know where I’m going with this. Never for a single second did I get bored or laugh twice, since the movie was that enthralling…..Whenever it was Rick Dalton trying to get his fame back together or Cliff Booth doing crazy **** to the hippies,or any shot that featured bare feet.
I didn’t have any problem with Sharon Tate’s (played by Robbie) arc,but I still felt like you could’ve easily removed it,since the rest still feels glued together (but oh no,we have to connect it to the last seconds, when she and Rick finally meet),and again, the hippies as the villain feel outlandish and out-of-place. Yea,even if it means seeing Harley Quinn Smith (alongside other hippies) screaming **** at Brad Pitt for kicking that guy’s ass.
But yo. That’s literally what’s wrong with it. So,I finally saw it,and I feel like I’m the last reviewer of the Instagram Movie Community to see it. Kinda like a quest, where everyone already did it,but you’re still thriving to achieve it. I really wanted this to end my Summer, and with the style and substances (and he amount of feet) it carried,I feel like this could’ve ended my summer in style. I’m so glad that the great movie from Sony this year is this one,and I can’t wait to see Tarantino’s next (and, sadly, final) outing as a Director. Even if you saw 2 movies like these, you can still tell dude’s got some talent in his pockets!

The story line plodded along and the tension grew towards the climax of the film, yet I wondered when I'd revisit the movie? I went to see Pulp fiction three times when it was first on. Tarrantino made a beautiful looking film but the story let him down in my humble opinion. Nevertheless, go and see it on the big screen while you can. Expand

Making one film as good as those is extremely difficult; following it up is even tougher. That being said, this one is definitely one of the weaker in Tarantino’s filmography, despite a gorgeous look and two very good performances from its lead actors.
I think what ultimately kills this film is the aimlessness of its dialogue. This is Tarantino style dialogue, to be sure, but it isn’t quite Tarantino substance. Whereas in his other films, the dialogue is wandering and seemingly pointless at times, there was always a purpose behind every word. I don’t feel he was able to capture that cohesiveness that his other films managed to obtain. It’s not a terribly made movie, not at all. It just isn’t great.

Sincera e interesante sin ser necesariamente entretenida. "Once Upon A Time...

Sincere and interesting without being necessarily entertaining. "Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood" it is a thankful exercise of authenticity in times of abusive melancholy.
The cast, which is big and respects the work of Tarantino, fairly recreates a background full of influential profiles in the world of Hollywood films. That's how we'll follow the moments of Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth (interpreted by Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt) which are the neighbors of Sharon Tate, Roman Polanski and Jay Sebring (Margot Robbie, Rafał Zawierucha and Emile Hirsch) in Hollywood at the end of the 60s. The most relevant of the plot is the observation dynamic and professional exercise that exists behind and onwards the cameras that travel along with the characters and people of that historic city. On that trip, it can be appreciated and admired the scenery and costume work because the visual elements not only represent the memories of the young Tarantino but, at the given time, exploits even if it’s just for a brief moment.
Tarantino renews the narrative formula that distinguishes his movies without taking away his cinematographic style and, at the same time, the story expresses situations that allude to personal inspirations. Overall, the film is an essay about the personality vs character game of a person that lives and works in a spectacular studio as Hollywood is. Thus, in the first two acts, he is patient, detailed and with a heavy sensibility, and in the third act, we see the old and trustful Tarantino whose famous intensity is uncontainable. However, even though you can feel the vanity and the daring of Tarantino’s direction, its success is thanks to the real context of its presentation. Nowadays there's no respect for originality, however, as personal and nostalgic the movie is, Tarantino knows that there's no point in creating without honoring his own vision.

While working towards the Infamous climax, we are introduced to Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth who struggle to stay relevant in the Hollywood business. What is initially a story about Rick Dalton's declining career, becomes an ominous tale that leads to the gruesome murder of Sharon Tate... Or does it? During the first two hours, characters are build and put into perspective to make the audience have a connection with them. This is all tied to known stars and Hollywood figures of 1969, making for some very fun and tense scenes. Unfortunately, the viewer is left wondering for a very long time where it will go until the ranch is visited by Cliff Booth, with little extraordinary excitement during the first two hours.

Finally, during the climax of the movie things get exciting and tense. In typical Tarantino fashion, stuff gets crazy. While the ending is very satisfying, it will take a long time of watching lesser scenes that are really only there to make the viewer care about the characters. The movie dwells on the border of being entertaining, and succeeding only barely. It is a good movie, but i don't think anyone will watch it a second time in comparison to other Tarantino movies. I give it a 7/10.

And I consider this to be one hell of a bad movie. Not that it's unwatchable. It's just a loooong movie trailer by somebody, who is obsessed with regressive film references. None of the characters in the movie is relatable. Nobody has a motive for doing anything. The whole thing just slurs on and on and on and on. And if you like Brad Pitt, Leonardo diCaprio or Margot Robie, well, maybe then you would have accepted a five hours version.

My favorite Tarantino movie is Jackie Brown, because it had a plot, warm characters, humor and a perfect resolution in the end. "Once upon..." has none of that. It's brilliantly shot and visually works as a Hollywood timepiece. But apart from that, it is just dull.

Set in late 60′s California, Quentin Tarantino’s most recent picture “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” places audiences in a slow starting and fast finishing wholistic two hour film.

A piece created for its time the movie matches washed up has beens and ambitious wannabe’s in a time where the world around them is becoming less about that “golden” Hollywood lifestyle.

Tarantino’s unique directing style shines through with long drawn out simple scenes and conversation dialogue that actually feels like something two people would be talking about in ways that two people might actually be talking to each other. Like most conversations in passing, some may not be as particularly interesting as others, but throughout the film this adds a much needed layer of realism to a time period that is normally sensationalized at every instance in its reflection of cinema. Additionally the story is relatively straightforward due to the assist of its alignment with the terrible Manson family event that happened that fateful day in 1969.

For personal enjoyment I was left pleased when the film was over that my captivation in the moment was not lost or interrupted by anything a character on screen did. Actions felt warranted and words felt real in what is a testament to both the actor and Tarantino’s writing himself.

While falling short of his previous greats like “Hateful Eight” and “Inglourious Basterds”, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” successfully evokes nostalgic emotion and provides genuine entertainment in a realistic and exciting thoughtful slice of life.

TheA difficult movie to rate; Tarantino made a movie which is very characteristic for his style of filming. The shots and scenes are great, the characters give a great perfomance and Tarantino's magic touches show throughout the story. The problem is that it feels like Tarantino is pursuing two story lines, making neither feel complete; and this in a rather long movie. Because of these story lines, there are some amazing scenes which seem redundant to the story in the end. My feeling after watching the movie: "This is some crazy sh*t", but not necessarily because it was that good, but because the movie felt a bit crazy and therefore in the end has difficulties to truly shine.
Conclusion; some great filming, but it feels like Tarantino didn't really know how to create one complete enticing plot line.

Will the movie plot dazzle you?... no in fact the absence of any meaningful plot is this movies greatest setback so much that I give it a 3, I gave up in the middle of the movie since the movie was slowly moving to what ends up being the shortest and blandest ending I have ever seen on screen, and the action is nothing special.
There is no real sense of danger in this movie except in one moment but that too ends quickly. You will not watch this movie twice that is all I can say for the end.

With an ensemble cast of veterans and relative newcomers, a fantastic soundtrack and great cinematography to boot, Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood is all Show but no substance, a film in which has a running time of just under three hours, has no actual driving narrative hook, protagonist/antagonist conflict or character development/arcs whatsoever, this film is a poorly laced together act by act display, when the film feels like its going to become interesting? it does not. Will we spend enough with any other characters? No.

with the amount of attention this film has procured to be in the running for "Best Picture" for the 2020 Oscars is only on the soul reason of the Director, would i recommend you to watch this film? No, you could however look at this film and find your own point to its creative direction or lack thereof, after Tarantino's last blunder i was hopeful this would be good, i along with many others were let down, i used to be sad he would stop directing films, but nowadays, it feels like i am counting the days until Tarantino is out of Directors Chair.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood: 9th time a charm?

S2S: This weekbefore you Trip Fontaine was able to review the summer blockbuster, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The movie by director Quentin Tarantino. So let’s see what Trip has to say.

Trip Fontaine: Most fairy tales begin with those famous four word: once upon a time. Quentin Tarantino’s 9th film as writer and director, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, alludes to the promise and magical romanticism of those children’s stories. While not necessarily a fairy tale, this film leans into the romanticism of Hollywood and the despair of when the realization of the Hollywood dream begins to slip or is otherwise threatened.

Rick Dalton, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, is an aging television and movie actor in the 1950’s and 60’s, whose career is on a downturn. His confidante, assistant and longtime stunt double is Cliff Booth, played by Brad Pitt. The main plot of Dalton and Booth is a little bit character study of two actors, who must come to terms with the impending end of an era, and a little bit of a buddy dramedy in which each willfully supports the other. The subplot involves a rising starlet, Sharon Tate, played by Margot Robbie. Tarantino firmly sets the main action of the film in 1969, a turning point in American counterculture, which is particularly resonant considering the other characters that are encountered throughout.

For the uninitiated, it may be a good idea to do a quick Google search: Who is Sharon Tate? If you don’t already know a little bit about the actress, it may be helpful in orienting yourself on the time and significance of both Tate and the mysterious hippies Cliff meets. While not strictly necessary for enjoyment of the film, it does add some rich texture to where Tarantino is taking us. There’s some joy, but also impending doom.

At 2 hours and roughly 40 minutes runtime, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood tells its story with a deliberate pace. This runtime is pretty standard for a Tarantino film. It doesn’t feel like there is a wasted moment. The core contrast between Dalton’s downward career trajectory and Tate’s promise of future stardom is enhanced by DiCaprio’s almost manic desperation as Dalton tries to save the parts he is getting and Robbie’s luminous sequence reveling in watching Tate on the big screen. Pitt has never been his Pitt-est than as Cliff – he’s confidant and brash, no nonsense with a sense of humor. There is a hilarious scene between Pitt and Mike Moh, as Bruce Lee, that will be one of the most talked about. It all comes together, so surprisingly, in the last 20 or so minutes that you walk out a bit dazed and giddy. And, if you know the history, it is satisfyingly bittersweet as well.

For Tarantino fans and true Cinephiles, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood is a must see in the movie theaters. Get your tub of popcorn (and other snacks) and settle in for movie stars being movie stars and a film-loving director directing a film about loving films. For the rest, I still suggest seeing this movie in the theaters. Tarantino films are meant to be seen on the big screen.

Thanks Trip for your review, I agree with you completely. The acting are Leo and Brad at their typical best and thus Tarantino also rebounding to his best after the Hateful Eight. There are two points I want to drive home for general moviegoers, aka the non-Tarantino fans or non-Cinephiles. First, general moviegoers, this is honestly a borderline matinee film for you based on the length of the film and because of point number two. Point two is that you if you don’t know who Sharon Tate is, you will be lost in the theater and will overlook the brilliance of the story being told to you to make this a definite big box film. I almost want to say don’t look up who she is until after the film because that just might enhance you intrigue in the movie and make you want to see it again for certain easter eggs.

Long story short, for general moviegoers catch the matinee if anything, but if you know the story of Sharon Tate, then this will be a great film to see in theaters.

The Stream: 2 hours and 40 minutes can be a long time to sit in a theater.

The Big Screen: Tarantino, Leo and Brad are at their best while providing a suspense filled movie with comedic gold.

The Final Bill: Tarantino fans and true Cinephiles, this is a must see in the movie theaters for the great acting and storytelling.

Finest acting my wife and I had EVER seen by Brad Pitt. Very very impressive. Of course, Leonardo was also awesome but you’d expect that from him. This movie was very entertaining. I worried about the ending possibly being a re-enactment of the Charles Manson murders but it was NOT. In fact, although it was a bit gruesome, it was a twist everyone should appreciate. I actually laughed uproariously during this scene. Just deserves for Charlie Manson’s gang. Sharon Tate was unharmed at the end as it should have been with a fairy tale Hollywood ending. A love letter to Sharron Tate. Tarantino’s skills as a director are now complete. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a Nostalgia movie. Some would say you would have had to have lived in the 60s to really “get it,” but Quentin Tarantino has done a fantastic job of capturing the period for the ones who didn’t. From the bus stop ads to the music, sentimental shots of Cliff driving down Forest Lawn Drive, QT has captured the flavor of Los Angeles in its time. Unfortunately, apart from the scenic portrait and the odd joke here and there, this screenplay was bland and slightly boring throughout. Whatever happened to the enigmatic dialogue that Quentin used to write? You’ll have to hit pause an hour in just to stop and ask yourself, “Is anything going to happen?” And something does happen, it’s just a slow drive getting there.

You should already know this, but if you are looking to see a film adaptation of ‘Helter Skelter’ and the events of Spahn Ranch and the Manson Family, then this movie is not for you. The Tate-LaBianca murders play a very small plot point of this movie, which makes for a bit of a disappointment since that is the climax and the apparent thing that the entire movie is building up to. That’s just it though; there is no buildup, or even a storyline for that matter. I’ve heard things like, “It’s not supposed to be a story movie,” or even, “it’s a character analysis.” Well, I don’t know about you, but last time I heard, movies were supposed to have a story. That was the central problem with Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood. I think it was made pretty clear before I watched it that it wasn’t going to be about Manson, but I’m still let down by this movie anyways. Why wouldn’t Tarantino have just made ‘Helter Skelter,’ based on Bugliosi’s accounts, and get to make a movie with an actual story/plot. He had all the materials, actors, and creative direction, but none of the output. I like that QT explores genres in each film, but in this case, I think he should have stuck to doing what he does well, which is chilling horror.

For a 3-hour movie, it could be said that this movie was actually too short. Quentin Tarantino does an excellent job of showing things happening on screen without anything actually happening. A lot of the events of the film were pointless and brought no real meaning to the story if there ever was one. For example, there is a lot of dialogue about this supposed “acid-dipped cigarette” that Cliff will eventually smoke, but it isn’t ever really elaborated on at all. While high, he fights like Cliff always does, and it doesn’t seem to affect him in any way. A 4-hour Director’s Cut is going to be released soon, but I doubt there will be any story in there either. Wouldn’t that be a laugh? The entire story was cut to make more room for flamethrowers and dirty feet. That’s all anybody really wanted to see anyways.

In summary, this movie was hilarious, had all the right Tarantino-esque scenes played out, great acting, and zero story. This could actually be seen in a positive light if you want it to, like re-inventing movies. Welcome to 2020: The dystopian reality of movies that are just series of cinematography with good music. Like, really good music. Using the original Batman music in the end was a nice touch. People said that you needed to really “know the history” to love this movie, but that was just it for me. I knew the history, read Helter Skelter from front to back, and I still didn’t think it was the masterpiece that some people say it is. It’s actually sad to think that this is what people call a masterpiece these days, but it is what it is. It was a pretty movie with good acting and a cathartic ending, but one that also leaves you begging the question, “What did I just watch?” You may feel robbed of your 3 hours or you may feel better for having had the experience. Either way, you’re still going to see Kill Bill 3 when it comes out.

3 stars.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Look. I didn’t hate this movie. It’s very well shot, well acted, and Tarantino’s style remains among my favourites of all time. It’s just that the characters are bland, nothing really happened in the whole 2.5 hour runtime, and it feels bloated to pad out the runtime.

This was the only movie where, in my small town theatre, I’ve ever seen people walk out before the end of the second act. Cool and intriguing story threads are left dangling there and never addressed again. The stunt double’s reputation for having murdered his wife and gotten away with it a la OJ Simpson? One brief scene sets it up and never discussed again. The Charles Manson murders are a driving influence, I guess, but Tarantino decides to characteristically play with history and allow Sharon Tate to live. (Also, Sharon Tate was played wonderfully by Margot Robbie, but every single one of her scenes was an unnecessary dip into Tarantino’s foot fetish.)

The last act leading up to the fight scene (one of the best scenes of the movie,) is awkwardly rushed and wraps everything up in a nice bow with absolutely no satisfaction for the audience.

In conclusion, I liked this film on a technical level, but creatively? There’s a lot to be desired here. Maybe consider this one when it’s in the $5 bin and you want to pad out your DVD collection.

It's the usual Tarantino flick: nostalgia, weird people doing weird stuff and a senseless massacre. But (some of) the cast is great and it's the best reenactment of the late 60s, early 70s that I ever saw, it really was like being there.

Real Ratings: 77.5/100
Critics love Tarantino because he loves cinema and they can associate with that, and they get all of his references, which can be lost on your average viewer. It is the same reason movies set in LA often get a few noms or wins during Oscar season that many would call questionable. This is not to detract from Tarantino's talent. The man is a great writer, though as of late he has become a blowhard. Scripts are long and drawn out, and then they all crash into an ending that seems tacked on rather than built to which begs the question does he even know where he is going with his films anymore. It is not visionary, it is repetitive and showing very little sign of growth. He is a craftsman who carves an excellent movie each time, but they are more or less the same.

DE: Tarantino runs a decent ship, and Hollywood is no different. Everything seems to be on point. Every department is hitting its marks, and we are building a tale in his distinct (if that is the right word) style. In terms of editing, the loss of Sally Menke can be felt in every one of his films since she passed. She somehow was able to contain him and give a better structure. Though from seeing her works outside of the Tarantino verse, you can see he had an equal part in elevating her. Together they were able to take his longwinded approach and make it come off with a steady pace and allow decent investment from the audience, but now however that is slipping away at a fast pace with each subsequent film.

W: Tarantino is one of the great writers, he is not on Miyazaki's or Anderson's level, but he is undoubtedly on the same level as the Coen brothers or Bong Joon-ho. Which is not a level to sniff at, but the problem with Tarantino's writing is that he may have switched genres, but he has not adapted to it. More that he has made another Tarantino movie with a new shell on it. Which is great, but if I wanted to see the same thing as before I might as well watch the classics. It is sort of like a band doing a new tour 20 years later trying to flog the new stuff that sounds far too similar to the old stuff, and the fans would much rather prefer to hear the hits.

C: Have you seen a Tarantino, Scorsese or Oliver Stone movie? Then guess what you have seen Robert Richardson's work and along with it some iconic shots that have littered avatars and uni students bedrooms for decades. His outing this time is impressive, though it might not match a level that he created. That said the lens seems to tell more of a story here than Tarantino's writing, which tells you everything you need to know.

A: Acting is stereotypically cartoonish, but that has become a standard for Tarantino. Though Pitt's depiction of the more sane character throughout this 2D world of actors stands out. Sadly given the cast, we are working with, and the sheer level of talent coupled with the extent in which we examine these characters lives it feels underwhelming, and each one is more an allegory than a persona in their own right.

S: As strange as it seems the sound department is usually one of the reasons I watch a Tarantino film. Since Inglourious Basterds someone in the sound department is getting an Oscar nom, whether it is music, mixing or editing. Without fail Hollywood continues this trend. Just excellent.

PD: This film is not pretending to be the 1960s, it is the 1960s. I know you have seen many a period piece, and they all do a decent job, but it is the subtle nuances and the dirt that make the difference. This is not a glossy veneer trying to rewrite a section of history, this is just trying to capture an era for better or worse. This may be down to the fact that Tarantino is obsessed with the period and only a slight glance at his oeuvre would back this notion up.

BA: The costume design, while simple is also great, it catches the style of the era without feeling like it is overexaggerating the form or the zeitgeist of the time. The visual effects in the latter portion of the film while jarring are quite well done and stand out.

EVO: It is not one of Tarantino's "funner" films, which is odd given that it is a bright nostalgia backed film told from the perspective of mostly positive souls. If you are a Tarantino completest, you are going to want to see it, but for many, the question of why did I sit through that for 3 hours will ring true on the lips, and while the film is crafted brilliantly I cannot help but finding myself siding with them.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the first Quentin Tarantino film I have ever seen, and I have heard nothing but good things about this legendary film maker and his movies. Hence, when I saw the trailer for this film, I was immediately intrigued with the concept of the film. There is so much you can do with a movie based in the film industry as the 1960’s come to a close, so I naturally decided that this would be my first Quentin Tarantino film that I would watch, and I was extremely disappointed.
Firstly, I would like to make note of what I enjoyed about this film. Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie all provided fantastic acting in this film. Their performances were so genuine and I really enjoyed what they brought to each of their own characters. Secondly, some of the cinematography is really nice. It was really clever how Quinten incorporated the old style of filmmaking into a modern narrative, and I think he excelled in doing this in the film. However, this is where my positivity for this film ends. This movie is just boring from start to finish. There is just something so uninteresting about a movie that is mainly based around watching characters go through each of their days for 2 and a half hours. Personally, great character writing and razor-sharp dialogue isn’t enough to carry a movie.
There are so many themes within the film that just flew over my head because there were so poorly conveyed by Quentin. I shouldn’t have to go researching about a film after I have seen it just so I can begin to see some form of value in it, but I did, and if anything, it just made me dislike the film even more. For example, upon my initial viewing, the character “Sharon Tate” seemed such a pointless and uninteresting character within this films context. She adds so little to the plot that her character could be remove and the narrative would still be exactly the same. However, upon researching about the film’s context, I learnt that the film was playing with the idea of showing the audience how in this universe, Sharon Tate was left unaffected by the events of the Tate-Labianca murders, and how she just lived a normal life. Once I read that, I thought that would have been such a brilliant concept if it was conveyed better to the audience, but it wasn’t. Instead, we are presented with an uninteresting, shallow character that has little to no significance. This goes for most of the underlying concepts explored within the movie, such as Quentin Tarantino providing a Hollywood ending of the Tate-Labianca murders as a representation of how Hollywood fictionalises real events. These themes are handles so poorly, and I just felt frustrated that the film only held value to me after I researched about its themes. It is an example of poor cinema and storytelling.
If you liked this movie, great, I have nothing but respect for you because I can very well understand why someone would enjoy a movie like this. But for me personally, it just felt like a waste of time to sit through and watch. From what I can tell, if you are a big fan of Quentin Tarantino movies, you’ll probably like this one, but other than that, I would not recommend this movie.

Secondly, I didn’t like the film. I found parts of it boring, Tarrantino seemed more interested in displaying this "Love letter to Hollywood" than creating interesting characters or a compelling story. The story has very little get up and go, which is weird for a Tarrantino movie. The ending felt abrupt and shoved in. One of fav Tarrantino movies was the Hateful Eight, simply because time was taken to introduce the characters and make them interesting and depth. In this movie the characters feel frankly shallow. The acting, unsurprisingly, was great and full of life. What let them down was the characters themselves. I didn’t care about any of them. This film felt like a bit of a weird hark back to a bi-gone era of boring and empty films. Sorry Tarrintino. Not a fan of this one. Expand

This wonderfully acted and beautifully shot movie contains all the hallmarks of what makes Tarantino's films so great. But it also stands out as being the least substantial out of all of his work.

The already simple plot gets lost among so many meandering scenes that seem to be there just to look pretty. They do look pretty, they look amazing, actually, but they do give out a sense of self indulgense on the part of the director. Most storylines in the movie go nowhere, and the weird tonal shift in the end reminded me of Unglorious Bastards, another weak link in Tarantino's filmography.

But even Tarantino's trashiest and dumbest movie still somehow stands heads and shoulders above anything else Hollywood has to offer.

This is an example of boring film making where the director's ego overplays the substance of the film, entertainment and exaggeration given for the simple look of slick and cool. It doesn't pay off and Brad Pitt's character and Leo's passion is wasted in Sharon Tate spin off story. This is disgusting and it was a complete waste of energy.
