3 hours of boring. Clearly a vaniety project for Tarantino. Watched the first hour and got distracted. Some time went by when I looked up and realized I had missed nothing. Turned it off.

Pretty boring flick with any interesting scenes being few and far between. The final scene felt gratuitous as some way to stick it to the Manson family for daring to strike against the Hollywood elite.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A great film I slept on for far too long. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is a brilliant window into the dying days of Hollywood's golden age, pontificated by a washed up actor desperately chasing his fading glory, his stunt double, excommunicated by scandal over his involvement in his wife's death.

The film feels at times like it could be real, based on a real story and real people, before taking turns towards the absurd, the fairy tale suggested in the films title. It's central narrative is less a concrete story and more a struggle. Dalton's feeble struggle to remain a star. His inane hope that he might just happen to cross his neighbour, Roman Polanski, his insistence on remaining in Hollywood, in a house he can only just afford because it means he remains in Hollywood just a little longer.

The films portrayals of real individuals has been criticised, but one thing to remember is the nature of the film. It's an exaggeration. Purely embracing the absurdity of Hollywood. Bruce Lee, the Manson family, they're all taken to a point of absurdity here in keeping with the nature of the film.

The film ends with the foiling of the Tate murder, in very a Tarantino-esque fairy tale ending. With this, Dalton's career, which had been on the cusp of ending, seems to be saved when he is invited by Tate to join them at Polanski's house for a drink, achieving the goal he had sought throughout the film, leaving the film to close with a spark for Dalton's dying career. And that's that, a Hollywood fairy tale, with all the drama, dilemma, drug use, inflated egos, and action you'd expect. It's not Tarantino's greatest film, but it is a great, character driven journey into a fading era of Hollywood's past.

It's an alright buddy comedy movie, an above average one but for Quentin, it's not very good. The movie focuses mainly on the friendship between Rick and Cliff (DiCaprio and Pitt). The friendship though felt awkward and kind of unnatural, Cliff was nothing more than Rick's unpaid chaperone while also being his personal stuntman. Their relationship seemed forced and just as a side effect of their jobs (and plot), not because they really liked each other. It spoilt my immersion into their scenes together and my interest in them as characters. When they aren't together but doing things alone the movie is better and the funny scenarios they get caught up in are amusing but not hilarious moments like in Inglorious and Pulp Fiction. I chuckled a lot but hardly laughed out loud. The big finale is more wtf and exciting than a belly laugh. The dialogue in sharp and gets your attention with wit but the story doesn't really go anywhere. I get Tarantino likes to break up his movies making them non-linear but ultimately every scene compliments the narrative and builds up to a logical conclusion. However, Once Upon... is just a collection of unique moments which our protagonists find themselves in, which although reasonably enjoyable, don't add barely anything to the narrative for much of the runtime. The last third of the movie is much better and meaningful which just is a bit frustrating because if the film was more cohesive like the final third, I personally would have liked it a lot more than i did. Ricks journey gets interesting 90 minutes in and Cliff gets a worthwhile plot. The finale is entertaining but the ending is a let down, it's like they go through a big event and just forget about it like nothing happened, The End. The movie wastes a lot of time on Sharon (Robbie) whose scenes are dull and just feel like filler. They don't go anywhere and eventually here character is just forgotten about. It felt like a tribute to the real Sharon Tate which is probably the case if you know what happened to her in 1969 but apart from being a tribute and a nod to the past, her scenes just feel unnecessary. This movie had real potential and just fell flat, all the cool 1960's Hollywood back drop and nostalgia wasted for a mediocre comedy. I think Tarantino films are more about imagery, quirky characters and honouring classic movies than about telling a gripping story and grabbing your attention these days. Expand

The first 3/4 of the movie feel way overlong and nothing, really nothing happens. It seems to be a Dicaprio-Pitt show and even when the movies tries to be funny doesn't succeed in its intent (for example the Bruce Lee scene that feels almost disrespectful) and then seems like Tarantino is trying to put everything into the last 20 minutes of the movie which turns out to be confusing and messy. The lide that cinema could subvert the course of history (even if we already saw it in "inglorious basterds") could be original but the execution was not Tarantino's best. And it's an euphemism. I found myself laughing out loud many many times, and the acting is of course delightful. The buddy-buddy relationship between DiCaprio and Pitt is both adorable and heartbreaking. I found the pacing to be excellent for a movie that's 2:45 long (although I did need a quick bathroom break!). It's amazing how many quintessential Tarantino moments there are to take in, while not being over the top (dare I say absurd?) in the way that Django or Kill Bill are. If you don't like it, they'll tell you you just didn't 'get it', but there's an offensive lack of anything 'to get'. This is what "Too Big To Fail" looks like in Hollywood. The movie's long, which wouldn't be a problem if it had anything to say, but it doesn't. It's got great actors, great cinematography, and a great soundtrack, and they're all lacking any interesting plot to service and are thus all wasted. Tarantino's always been a bit of a hit and miss director/writer, but even with his more mediocre movies, there have always been one or two wonderfully written scenes that make up for the fluff. This does not have any of that. This is fluff without any genius. I'd have given it even less than a 4 if it hadn't been for the aforementioned actors, cinematography, and music. Expand

This is a really fun film. There are abundant references to TV shows from the late 50s through the 60s, both U.S. and foreign films of the era and another history redux. There are some things that are fun or clever that do not make a great deal of sense. The attention to detail in making Hollywood look like it did in the 60s is great. Both Pitt and DeCaprio are well suited to their roles. DeCaprio, in particular, seems to be tangentially parodying his own career. There are different moments that are funny, sweet, insightful, silly and ultra violent. The violence, particularly against women, unfortunately ebbs towards misogyny. But, at the end, this 60s Hollywood tale is a great deal of fun. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Once Upon a Time is top form Tarantino. Still in our opening weekend, I’ll put up the big spoiler warning for this one right now so that we can talk more openly about the film after the jump. There was some controversy about whether showing his film at Cannes would ruin the twist for future movie goers, which apparently led Friend to investigate and make the friendship-ending decision to share his newfound spoiler with Wife and me before leaving for his European vacation. Since then, we’ve been picking up the pieces and trying not to think too hard about what circle of hell he’s destined for. But if you’re reading this far down, you are aware that we’re looking at an alternate history story in a similar vein to Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds, but also strangely enough with an indie film, Yesterday, currently enjoying some love.

The film is structured neatly into two parts with a decisive and unexpected time break. Tarantino is enamored with recreating genre television of the 1960s, whether it’s the cowboy Westerns that are Rick Dalton’s main fare or cheesy celebrity cameo commercials, FBI action adventures, or World War II nostalgia. Tarantino’s talent for blurring the lines between the real and the cinematic is at work, ambient music gives unexpected flavor to some of the most tense scenes of both halves of the film.

Little details like the length of Cliff’s drive to his trailer in the sub-suburbs of LA or the little moment of Cliff’s polite decline to pick up the hitchhiking hippies on their second meeting do wonders in fleshing out a friendship with weight and deep loyalty. Both Cliff and Rick are given the requisite nice guy scene with a young child or a cute animal in order to solidify their status as top notch goodies. Likewise, Tarantino’s villains are given a long runway from which to take off: they are equal parts alluring, enigmatic, grotesque, clownish, and damaged. On that last note, Once Upon a Time is stuffed with veiled critiques of Hollywood, wrestling with the unpleasantness of historical facts coupled with contemporary morality.

Tarantino feels to me like someone who has escaped for the most part the baggage of past associations of Harvey Weinstein despite some potential landmines, like the pressure Uma Thurman felt to do dangerous stunts on his set while being manhandled by a powerful executive producer. Thurman’s daughter, Maya Hawke continues a storied partnership between the director and the Thurman into a new generation and seems to validate Tarantino’s character. Tarantino’s other films have always struck me as interesting because of their tendency to elevate strong, fully-considered female protagonists and antagonists. Once Upon a Time has lots of roles for actresses in the springs, summers, and autumns of their careers. Even if the film is a bit of a bromance, it finds ways to tell other stories in the process: Sharon Tate’s storyline is obviously given a lot of attention and Tarantino deals with blending footage from her work with Margot Robbie’s smart, quirky, and apt depiction.

Dana Stevens over at Slate has taken a stab at trying to draw some comparisons to Tarantino’s previous work in a glowing and funny review, but I think I’ll need a second viewing before I have more decisive opinions.

UPDATE (Aug 5): I’ve been reading a lot more about OUATIH and ended up seeing it again by myself on Friday after starting a new job last week. Joelle Monique and Sam Adams have dueling essays about the gendered subjectivity of Tarantinian violence that’ll keep your mind going for a bit. Monique convinced me that I would absolutely hate Jackie Brown and then when I offhandedly mentioned the article and that film as the epitome of Tarantino’s callous fridging of female characters, a friend of mine wrinkled his brow and said it was a classic, which made me think I better go and see it for myself. THR had two takes that I noticed: Richard Newby did a nice close read of the film and its influences and Ciara Wardlow kind of split the difference between Monique and Adams in the feminist debate while placing the film in the context of the amazing trailers that preceded the movie by women directors and directors of color (“Harriet, Jojo Rabbit, Queen & Slim, and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood“). To that list, I add the ones that rounded out my second viewing: Knives Out, King’s Man, and Charlie’s Angels’ reboot. Alison Willmore is doing God’s work at Buzzfeed with a diachronic look at women in Tarantino films.

The lead actors perform admirably. There are some good moments, especially near the end and it's not gory like most Tarantino flicks and I'm taking that as a plus.

Still, none of that makes this a good movie. It's pretty good, but mostly boring and the only real plus is seeing Leonardo and Brad in action. Without them this would have been a very subpar movie for Tarantino. Nowhere near as good as Inglorious basterds, Django unchained, Reservoir dogs or Pulp fiction.

Quentin Tarantino is “fantastic” writer and director

He managed to make the worst movie I have ever watched, although there was a fantastic crew of actors. Well done.
This movie is the best indicator that metacritic was sold and no longer represents a competent judgement when you are looking for the film ratings.
If you can, check out the film by yourself and you'll be clear.
Many companies have thought they were irreplaceable, but they don't exist any more. If metacritic continues like this, the same future awaits them.
There are many more viewers than directors, writers and producers.

All the dialogue from the two main characters is what makes this movie what it is, Leo and Brad bring their A game. Even when they are talking about something that may seem to make no sense in relation to the story, the dialogue finds a way to be relevant within the story and progress the characters. Al Pacino was also amazing in his role even through I liked his role in The Irishman a bit more. The ending seals the deal for why I love this movie and all the craziness it entails. All of the staples of his filmmaking appear, but in a much more restrained fashion. The vast majority of the film lacks the grandiose swagger of his more recent films, but it successfully draws you into the atmosphere all the same. What some may view as bloated actually plays an essential role. Without letting the audience simmer in the magic of Tinseltown, Tarantino's signature explosive finale would lose its thematic punch. Yes, it's based on true events, but don't be fooled. This is a movie with a whole lot more going on with it than simply retelling certain historical moments. More deliberately paced than most Tarantino flicks, "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" takes its sweet time building to its eventual climax. But, dear God, what a climax it is. An easy contender for one of the best scenes I've ever seen Tarantino pull off from script to screen (right beside the tavern scene from "Inglourious Basterds" and the pawnshop scene from "Pulp Fiction"), the finale expertly blends terror, dramatic irony, and comedy all into one incredible experience. I'm not sure I can say it's all entirely worth the near-three-hour running time, but once you see where and how everything falls into place, it gets pretty damn close. Expand

Until the middle,First of all, I will say that the story is an interesting one but Quentin Tarantino told it in a confusing way. What I mean by that is that the movie was all over the place until it finally got its grounding in the middle. Until the middle, the movie would cut away to tell a different story at random points instead of just finishing that one person’s story and then transitioning to the next. Because of this the film to me just felt a bit choppy and all over the place. This movie is two-hours and forty-one-minutes long and I feel like it could have been cut down. Some scenes just felt like they dragged on for far too long and there were so many perfect spots for the movie to end but it just kept dragging on and the ending we got comes out of nowhere and doesn’t fit the rest of the film so it should have just been removed. The acting in this film though was great. Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt easily came off as friends and this seems like such a minor thing but really, it’s a major thing. Sometimes actors can’t act like friends who have known each other but they came across as people who have worked together for years. Now, I’m not the biggest Leonardo Dicaprio fan but this film made me slowly start to appreciate his acting a bit more. For me, he was the stand out in this film because he could easily do both serious and funny scenes. Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, who play Sharon Tate, also did great jobs. The soundtrack to this film was filled with great songs from that decade. In the end, this film is defiantly for people who are Quentin Tarantino fans or just want to relive the glory days of older Hollywood. Expand

There are plenty of good, bad, and indifferent parts of the movie to touch on, all further complicated by the fact that the bar for any Tarantino picture is already incredibly high—perhaps unfairly so.

What do we mean by that last part? Well, overall the film has been received quite positively by film critics, though Tarantino acolytes seem to be a little more tepid about it. But what if this film weren’t written and directed by Tarantino, and instead was made by a lesser-known entity? Would it be considered a masterful piece of filmmaking, a breakout success largely unparalleled by anything else released so far this year? There’s no actual answer to this. We simply wonder …

Meanwhile, let’s start with the bad stuff. The middle of the film is somewhat meandering, meaning this is the third film in a row that Tarantino could’ve trimmed some fat to make the movie that much more invigorating. And what do his three most recent movies all have in common? The absence of Tarantino’s long-time editor, Sally Menke, who tragically died at the age of 56 while hiking in Beachwood Canyon during a heat wave.

Furthermore, a key component of Tarantino’s movies is the way he incorporates music into the film, choosing the perfect song to complement what is seen on the screen. Our biggest gripe with ‘Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood’ is that the songs were often abruptly cut short, never being allowed to fully play out and truly meld with the action unfolding on screen.

On the positive side, the film is about 90% less violent than a typical Tarantino flick, meaning it’ll be a lot more accessible to moviegoers who previously avoided the filmmaker due to his penchant for frequently utilizing gory deaths. This makes the film closer to ‘Jackie Brown’ in both substance and style than most of his other works.

Lastly, ‘Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood’ proves once and for all that Leonardo DiCaprio is among the finest and most talented actors of his generation. He is downright captivating in every single scene. And considering he is an actor playing an actor—one of the hardest roles there is to pull off in Hollywood—it makes his performance that much more extraordinary.

I like violence as much as the next guy, but this is just ridiculous. And the alternative history was a nice gimmick the first time. Now it's just pathetic. I guess the whole point of the movie (besides violence) is exacting revenge upon the Manson family and sticking it to them. That's fine, but I have no strong feelings about the whole affair. It all happened before I was born, far away, and to people I have never heard of. I just don't care, and Tarantino failed to make me care. Oh, and that movie within the movie crap also failed big time. Only managed to bore me some more. I used to like some of Tarantino's movies, some I haven't even seen, but I definitely don't like this one. Good acting couldn't save it. The only good part is the end credits scene. Tarentino has long been a hack but this film highlights just how far he has fallen from his Reservoir Dogs days. The first half is boring, the back half is just utter comical goofiness that has never been funny.

About the ONLY good thing about the whole thing is his depiction of Bruce Lee which is by far the most accurate thing in the film.

Its hard to fault the actors for this one because the performances from the cast were mostly solid across the board. They simply could not hold together one of Tarantino lamest visions for a film to date. The whole production would have been at least a 7, but the writing from plot to dialog was so weak it easily drug it down to a 3. By far the worst film Tarentino has put his name on so far and clear illustration its long past time for him to pack it in.

What it had in detail it lacked in immersions despite both being so interwoven. I'm left scratching my head as to what went wrong for me and when I think about the story I struggle find one other than a look into a brief moment of a few people's lives. This wasn't really enough for me to care about the characters and really struggle to answer the question of what was the point of this film. One might say it is to shine a light to the masses about the time period in Hollywood but we know Tarantino isn't interested in replicating history. So what was the point? To tweak events so people can forget what really happened? Even that can't be true because in comparison to the body of work of this great film maker there isn't much to remember in this film. The acting was top class and again the details were really impressive and the devil is in the details. But I would have liked to see more of the devilish sense of fear when dealing with these events. Could this movie be edited in a way to improve the film, absolutely. There is a backbone of a good film here but originality should always be commended but not always rewarded. Expand

The most personal and stonishing movie Tarantino has ever made is not just a movie, but an amazing piece of art, brought together by the director's memories of Hollywood during the late 60s.

The movie is a great example of good acting and directing, and every single moment and scene of it is put together perfectly to bring us towards this unexpected, violent and funny end where Tarantino makes his job and finishes the film in the best way I could ever imagine.

"Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood" is definitely one of the best movies of the year, and his 160 min of pure good cinema are worth it.

I laughed VERY hard on many occasions in this movie, and there are plenty of thrills. Most importantly, Leo and Brad are just incredible in their roles. The direction and writing are pitch perfect, but it wouldn’t have been the same work without the simple brilliance of its lead actors. I also appreciate Quentin’s willingness to deviate from history when it makes sense. I should also make mention of the always excellent Margaret Qualley (from “The Leftovers”) – she has really good chemistry with Pitt, and she brings the two storylines together. In this era of bullsh*t comic book franchises, it’s so refreshing to get an original, unique film from a singular talent. When will Hollywood have the onions to take risks like this again? I won’t be holding my breath. Expand

Boring as hell. The only reason you keep watching this movie is on the hopes it will pull a full 180 at some pount. When it does, it feels completely out of place. I wish I could get my money back. This movie sucks!

It reminds me of Hal Needham getting together with his buddies and making a movie. It has great attention to detail of the period but unfortunately does not have attention to detail when being edited. It is too long and much of it is pointless. QT’s self indulgence is hard to watch. In my mind if I look at my watch during a movie it has failed. I looked at my watch 4 times. I won’t be seeing film #10. Expand

Weird and boring. First 2 hours and 30 minutes you’re watching Brad Pit drive around and Leonardo acting in old movies. Last 15 minutes provide a little comedy and action. The end
