The only redeeming factors about this movie are the acting, the setting and the final 15 minutes. Overall the movie is just WAY too long for no good reason. Also theres is no plot, no conflict, no story. It is just a drawn out 2 hour and 45 minutes experience of the 60s in hollywood. Very boring movie. If I were to watch this again, I would skip at least half. Expand

The screenplay left me baffled, and while it shines often for the way it is directed, the story itself has only a few highs and for the rest falls very flat to my eyes. Not my cup of tea, maybe somebody will love it, but the way it is directed, combined with its uneventfulness and uneven theme, bogged the viewing a lot. Acting is mostly spot on, but quirky at times, and not in a way that adds something. It’s a well directed movie, that suffers from a very flat atmosphere with a few flares and quirks here and there, which however don’t blend in well Expand

Well, i've liked most of Tarantino movies from the past and always enjoyed smart dialog and fun over-the-top scenes. But this last installment is kinda disappointment - it lacks the stuff expected from Tarantino: to be actually entertained. Instead what is offered is 3h journey to the 1969 which was really well done, alas uneventful. Sure there are few Pitt scenes that stand out but those are it - rest of the film is like forced and mandatory 60s commercial. Tarantino brings all his childhood crushes and influences to the screen - Polanski, Bruce Lee, stuntmen, riding cool cars, moviemaking backstories and business, watching movies in cinema etc - lots of bowing to the past glory days. Actors performances are fine but fail against weak story. 4/10 and never watching it again, any of his previous films are far better. Expand

First off, its themes contrasting the glitz and glamor with the squalor and instability of Los Angeles have been done to death, although the character exploration of DiCaprio's Rick Dalton is pretty great. Furthermore, the film has no sense of direction, as the film goes from place to place with little flow or moments of impact usually found in Tarantino's films, making the overall film feel uneventful and boring. Finally, and most glaringly of all, Tarantino is at his most self-indulgent in this film. The film/actor nods, in-jokes, and references are solely done to serve his own ego and admiration of vintage Hollywood. The extremely stretched out dialogue and pointless scenes serve to be solely stroke his ego and throw ineffective character moments at the audience. This adds up to a painful 2 hour 40 minute run time that feels like it could've been cut down to 2 hours at least if not even shorter. These three problems among others amount to a film that wanes in comparison to the rest of Tarantino's masterpieces. Expand

All style over substance and you are just waiting for a plot twist or just anything interesting to happen. I usually love his work but I’m left a little shocked at what a non event this movie is. If you want a documentary of life around this time then you’ll be satisfied with the indulgent subject matter, but if you’re expecting another great entry into Tarantino’s filmography prepare yourself for disappointment. The reason for this failure? I think it was the Manson family plot line that probably seemed a great idea to frame the narrative early in the writing process, but just ended up literally sending the director up a creative cul-de-sac. It's an alright buddy comedy movie, an above average one but for Quentin, it's not very good. The movie focuses mainly on the friendship between Rick and Cliff (DiCaprio and Pitt). The friendship though felt awkward and kind of unnatural, Cliff was nothing more than Rick's unpaid chaperone while also being his personal stuntman. Their relationship seemed forced and just as a side effect of their jobs (and plot), not because they really liked each other. It spoilt my immersion into their scenes together and my interest in them as characters. When they aren't together but doing things alone the movie is better and the funny scenarios they get caught up in are amusing but not hilarious moments like in Inglorious and Pulp Fiction. I chuckled a lot but hardly laughed out loud. The big finale is more wtf and exciting than a belly laugh. The dialogue in sharp and gets your attention with wit but the story doesn't really go anywhere. I get Tarantino likes to break up his movies making them non-linear but ultimately every scene compliments the narrative and builds up to a logical conclusion. However, Once Upon... is just a collection of unique moments which our protagonists find themselves in, which although reasonably enjoyable, don't add barely anything to the narrative for much of the runtime. The last third of the movie is much better and meaningful which just is a bit frustrating because if the film was more cohesive like the final third, I personally would have liked it a lot more than i did. Ricks journey gets interesting 90 minutes in and Cliff gets a worthwhile plot. The finale is entertaining but the ending is a let down, it's like they go through a big event and just forget about it like nothing happened, The End. The movie wastes a lot of time on Sharon (Robbie) whose scenes are dull and just feel like filler. They don't go anywhere and eventually here character is just forgotten about. It felt like a tribute to the real Sharon Tate which is probably the case if you know what happened to her in 1969 but apart from being a tribute and a nod to the past, her scenes just feel unnecessary. This movie had real potential and just fell flat, all the cool 1960's Hollywood back drop and nostalgia wasted for a mediocre comedy. I think Tarantino films are more about imagery, quirky characters and honouring classic movies than about telling a gripping story and grabbing your attention these days. Expand

The first 3/4 of the movie feel way overlong and nothing, really nothing happens. It seems to be a Dicaprio-Pitt show and even when the movies tries to be funny doesn't succeed in its intent (for example the Bruce Lee scene that feels almost disrespectful) and then seems like Tarantino is trying to put everything into the last 20 minutes of the movie which turns out to be confusing and messy. The lide that cinema could subvert the course of history (even if we already saw it in "inglorious basterds") could be original but the execution was not Tarantino's best. And it's an euphemism. It's a big, boring lump of hot air, but it's Tarantino so very few people are willing to tell you that the emperor is butt-naked. If you don't like it, they'll tell you you just didn't 'get it', but there's an offensive lack of anything 'to get'. This is what "Too Big To Fail" looks like in Hollywood. The movie's long, which wouldn't be a problem if it had anything to say, but it doesn't. It's got great actors, great cinematography, and a great soundtrack, and they're all lacking any interesting plot to service and are thus all wasted. Tarantino's always been a bit of a hit and miss director/writer, but even with his more mediocre movies, there have always been one or two wonderfully written scenes that make up for the fluff. This does not have any of that. This is fluff without any genius. I'd have given it even less than a 4 if it hadn't been for the aforementioned actors, cinematography, and music. Expand

What it had in detail it lacked in immersions despite both being so interwoven. I'm left scratching my head as to what went wrong for me and when I think about the story I struggle find one other than a look into a brief moment of a few people's lives. This wasn't really enough for me to care about the characters and really struggle to answer the question of what was the point of this film. One might say it is to shine a light to the masses about the time period in Hollywood but we know Tarantino isn't interested in replicating history. So what was the point? To tweak events so people can forget what really happened? Even that can't be true because in comparison to the body of work of this great film maker there isn't much to remember in this film. The acting was top class and again the details were really impressive and the devil is in the details. But I would have liked to see more of the devilish sense of fear when dealing with these events. Could this movie be edited in a way to improve the film, absolutely. There is a backbone of a good film here but originality should always be commended but not always rewarded. Expand

Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood took me by surprise of how bad it was, I mean I consider myself QT fan, I really like all of his films except that Death Proof one.

Getting things straight, I found this movie really boring, with ultra extensive and useless plots, I really liked Leonardo DiCaprio's and Brad Pitt's characters, quite a lot, but it seems that the movie didn't know what to do with them, instead we have this long scenes where they're supposed to be developing their characters but nothing happens and everything feels pointless and time-wasting. Sure there are some scenes here and there that are not short of brilliant but, their sum doesn't save the overall movie.

It seems that is like a love letter to that era of film making but it felt to me more snobbish than anything, and also it doesn't add anything to the story. As for the Manson plot which is allegedly the main plot, well, maybe it could turn out better without it.

I can't deny it: I'm disappointed. I'm disappointed because beyond my personal expectations I think this is the first Quentin Tarantino film since Jackie Brown that leaves me feeling empty.
I say this for very simple reasons and it's that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is the most simplistic film of the director and it sounds strange to say that about him and his work but it's the truth, at least in my point of view.

I don't know what kind of film he tried to nail down. I don't know what he was trying to say. I don't know where he was pointing but obviously there isn't much to take in. Because if there's something that happens to this film, it's that its plot is practically non-existent and it's just events that are everywhere to try to make this stuff more cohesive.

I must make something very clear and that is that for this story both the Manson family and Sharon Tate are simply collateral elements to reach an end.
I don't know how somebody could try to justify it otherwise, but Margot Robbie is more than useless for the full development of this film. She's only an instrument to construct the conclusion of the narrative and I suppose that this is the reason why she ends up surviving in this story, because it would have been despicable to use her death as a plot resource.

Obviously the film is built on a fairly weak narrative base and there's no way to fix it. That's the way it's built and most of the time you don't know where things are going with either of the two main characters. Both the character of Brad Pitt and DiCaprio are only parts of their environment. They don't have a beginning and obviously they don't have an ending.
Both actors are excellent, I cannot deny that, they're two veteran connoisseurs of their work but their great performances don't justify the whole experience.
As much as I tried to find a meaning, there never was one. The succession of events only occurr to fill the gaps while the climax is being built and when you finally reach that ending, which is a total Tarantino ending, I couldn't help thinking that when it arrived it was already too late and sincerely, as I said in the beginning when that ending comes, the feeling of emptiness begins to make a dent in you.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood it feels as if I had seen a fable without a moral, without direction and sadly kinda meaningless.
I understand that for many people this film represents a tribute from Tarantino to a completely disappeared era. That is a love letter to Hollywood. A love letter to his industry and I guess that is understandable to some extent, but sincerely analyzing the whole thing, I can't take a small thing out of my head, and is that if this is a love letter... well it's a love letter that pretty much says nothing at all.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Lets try to compare the classic Pulp Fiction to this film. QT follows a lose formula. To begin, all the actors in this movie are good. In Pulp , much of the story revolved around Vince Vega and Jules. In this one, Rick and Cliff are the principles. Loose comparison between Sharon Tate and Mia in Pulp but he gave Uma's character much better lines. Robby looks like Tate but thats where it ends. The Manson family sort of a collection of Marcellus Wallace parts. Bad guys but interesting and then of course, Tarantino's famous cameo roles. With Bruce Willis' Butch, Christopher Walken, Harvey Kietel, Eric Stolze, he hit the mother lode. Pacino, Damian Lewis , Bruce Dern, Kurt Russell's characters not even close. In conclusion. I think he got lucky with Pulp Fiction. Its a top 50 all time movie. One upon a Time in Hollywood is a mess and more indicative of Tarantino's true talent as a director. I alway like DiCaprio but in the this film, I thought Brad stole the show Expand

Idk about this one, really felt like this movie should’ve been great, it wasn’t bad like some reviews might leave you to believe, but it wasn’t as good as so many are putting it out to be. The Acting, Spectacular; The Setting, extremely warm and nostalgic; But The Plot, Non - Existent. The whole movie just rambled on at times and felt like it was getting nowhere (On a side note: the way the characters at the playboy mansion were introduced felt a little lazy on tarantino’s part). The whole vibe of the movie and the acting throughout was what brought my rating to as high as it did. I honestly expected more and i am, in a way, disappointed. Expand

Between a star-studded cast, great reviews from critics, and one of the best directors of all time Once Upon a Time In Hollywood had potential to be an amazing movie. Leo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt acted great in their respective roles, but Margot Robbie was dulled down to no more than an emotionless mannequin with little to no dialogue. The film tries to recreate previous action and excitement from older Tarantino films but falls short. The story is convoluted and drags on for way longer than it should. The only good part is the ending where we finally get some of the signature Tarantino violence but it does not make up for the unnecessary scenes and confusing plot line. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While this movie has great cast, great scenes and setting of Hollywood in those years and depicts well how an actor's life could be then plus can feel Tarantino vibes, this movie still is quite weak plot wise - most of the movie nothing really happens just shows random stuff. Yes you can say it shows how it is for actor to do his work, but overall there are too many filler shots of like Brad Pitt randomly driving around etc. The most interesting topic about Manson murders etc is covered only a bit. Basically the last half hour is really great but the rest is lacking. One of the worst Tarantino movies for me and I like all of his movies. Expand

Especially in the beginning, you watch 30 min and it feels like an hour. Nothing was happening. I liked the idea of "movie being made in the movie". But this is not a new concept. What was the reason for Margharet Robbie's character? What a wasted opportunity to have more scenes with her and tie up with main 2 characters. Narrated parts were not needed in my opinion either. I don't know what to feel, movie needs to be not boring to be fun, this is boring....until last 10 min, which was insane. But that does not save the movie. Expand

However, the cast is really who brought this movie to the just barely passable level that it achieves. Simply put it has no plot, there is no real problem produced, no actual climax and there is also no satisfying resolution to any of it. Sure the performance by Leo and Pitt are spectacular, but without them, I cannot even imagine what this movie would have been like. There where however some very cool sequences and ideas, plus the fact that we got to see what it was like to watch a scene shot in real-time. the long take and resets were cool and it was surreal to see how movies like this are shot. The stigma behind Tarantino and what a lot of people know him for is his great storytelling and interesting ways of telling it, (take Pulp Fiction as an example) but this one simply felt as if there was no real substance to it.
In conclusion, read up on the Manson family before watching this movie because you will enjoy it a bit more if you do, but Once Apon a Time in Hollywood seems like Tarantino simply missed the mark, and if it was not for Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio this movie would have fallen completely flat.
An endnote, I am going to see this again tonight so maybe I will leave with something more out of it and if I do I will change this review and my score.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to love it - went in expecting to love it. But in the end, it felt half-baked. This tongue-in-cheek imagining of late 60's Hollywood was fun at times, interesting at points, but all in all comes up short. Tarantino puts his signature dialogue and humour to good use but there is no tension - even when there could be tension it adds up to not much. The performances were solid, if not a bit overworked in trying to be appealing. The twist on the Manson plot line felt on the verge of disrespectful to a horrific crime. I am a big Tarantino fan but this was a miss in my book. Expand

This is Quentin Tarantino’s latest movie.

It is a very long nostalgic love letter to Hollywood, the way it was and looked 50 years ago.
The movie is more than two and a half hours long, full of references that (I am sure) are very meaningful to movie aficionados but for regular audience are a bit annoying.

One can feel the hand of a master in every aspect of a movie making.
Both lead actors, Leonardo di Caprio and Brad Pitt, give the top notch performances.

Last half an hour of the movie somewhat reminded me of Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” series in terms of art of violence.

I do not regret that I saw but I doubt that I will want to see it again.
If watching old movies is you main hobby, then this film is for you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was my first Tarantino movie and it was a pretty bad first impression, but we will get to that.
First for what I liked: Rick Dalton. Rick is a very charming and entertaining character. He is the only character in the movie that goes thought a satisfactory character arc and who affects the story with his actions, he has a lot of touching and funny moments, seeing him evolve filled me with joy and pride. Most of the other characters have their moments but he is in my opinion the one who shines the brightest.
This movie is full of art and charm, there's a lot of funny scenes that seem pretty genuine. It has a very unique storytelling and an artistic portrayal of life. If it was for the characterization, soundtrack and art direction alone this would be an excellent movie, but that's not all that movies are for me.
This leads us to the things I didn't enjoy: mainly the plot and character progression. I found the plot difficult to follow, and it feels like it goes nowhere. Most characters are static and have 0 reason to be there. They take long chunks of the movie to present them to you for them to do absolutely nothing of importance. A lot of scenes are meaningless and are not even entertaining, they seem to serve no purpose. Even for some of the protagonists, it feels like none of their actions has any weight in the story. This ends up meaning we have a long, long movie where roughly 50% of it is enjoyable. It truly drags for way too long (it didn't need to be a 2 hours and a half) and most plot threads have no satisfying conclusions.
Then theres the violence: Despite this being my first Tarantino movie I knew he was famous for his bloody fight scenes, so I was looking foward to that, and the scenes are there, but when the film gets to finally be violent, it feels nonsensical, brutal and unearned. Theres a fight scene at the end that I think was supposed to be "cool" and funny since my friend and the rest of the cinema were laughing pretty hard, but for me it was weirdly disgusting, and not visually but conceptually. They seemed like violence for the sake of it, nothing to justify it, nothing in line, nothing to enjoy.
I guess I was supposed to like the other protagonist, Cliff Booth, and think he was cool, but the most we get to know about him the most I disliked him. He goes from a pretty funny, loving guy to a violent smug **** then we learn that's what he always was. When he got into fights I catched myself always rooting for the other side to win, and I don't believe those were Tarantino's intentions.
In conclusion, my guess is that this movie is for Tarantino fans, those people who already consider him a genious and a visionary and therefore can analize every little scene looking for hidden meaning and symbolism. For me it was a way too long movie that was only half entertaining, with half of the scenes being meaningful, half of the characters serving any purpose and half of the protagonists being likeable at all.
And also, it should have been half as long.

Tarantino's love-letter to the end of the Hollywood Golden Age is a sumptuous feast for the eyes and ears, with a fantastic ensemble cast all working together to create the illusion of 1969.
As a piece of 'film-making' this is amazing cinema. As a movie, it's pretty crap if I'm being honest.
Beyond the way it looks and sounds, the great acting across the board and the attention to detail.. The film is missing a story, and a coherent plot.
At 160 minutes, the film is at least 40 minutes too long. There are innumerate stretched scenes, extended tracking shots, pointless dialogue and flashbacks that serve no purpose.
Even the finale where QT finally throws in some violence and blood seems forced, and because the rest of the film is very tame in that respect it doesn't fit the established ideas.

Overall it's a film I think everyone should watch once, but I suspect that they (and I) wouldn't be watching the film again for a very long time.

Well however many films he intends on making none will feel quite as personal as Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood.

Set in 1969 LA, Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) are struggling to find fame in the final years of Hollywood’s Golden age. Desperate to stay as part of the Hollywood scene Dalton can’t handle the fact that he’s becoming a has-been actor as he strives for perfection. If you thought DiCaprio’s scenery chewing performance in Django Unchained was entertaining to watch then you’re sure to love him in Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood. DiCaprio and Pitt make a great double act, a joy to behold, Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate was also superb casting. A star studded cast (not you Lena Dunham) that’s sure to bring in a crowd. Now I’m not sure what happened in the editing room but there are more than a few scenes from the trailer that you won’t see in the film itself and FYI for anyone who got excited about seeing Mike Moh as Bruce Lee in this film, if you’ve seen the trailer then that’s about it. There are moments that are painfully dragged out, I just didn’t feel we needed to sit in the car with the characters while they’re driving around again and again. I couldn’t help but be reminded of The Hateful Eight, scenes that linger on for longer than necessary, I feel at some point the story needs to get on with it. Tarantino is enjoying filming a scene so much he almost doesn’t want to move on to the next scene. The film is set during the Manson murders so the constant sense of unease is building towards disaster. I will also admit I was one of those concerned few who was apprehensive about Tarantino taking on a film set during the Manson murders but he handled it in a way that was not only unexpected but thoroughly entertaining. If you’ve seen Inglourious Basterds then you know Tarantino doesn’t exactly take historical accuracies into consideration and the same can be said for Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood. Best not to dwell on that and just go with it.

Yes I’d consider myself a Tarantino fan, though in my opinion he reached his peak long ago. And although there’s a lot I like about his style of filming making, the shocking violence, the well-written characters having conversations about seemingly nothing. I could definitely survive without the foot obsession and the pointless narration. I’m sure if you ask anyone they’ll each rank their favourite Tarantino films differently (but I’ll fight anyone who thinks Death Proof is anywhere in the top five) I don’t feel Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood is quite up there with Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill. Each to their own, no one divides an audience quite like Quentin Tarantino, despite being too long it’s entertaining and funny, with perhaps two of the best performances from DiCaprio and Pitt. Highly recommended for all the Tarantino fans.

"Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood" is Quentin Tarantino's love letter to the Hollywood of the 1950s and 1960s and a fine movie, but this is not a typical Tarantino movie either.

The main story is about an aging actor (Leonardo di Caprio) and his trusted stunt double (Brad Pitt) struggling in 1969 Hollywood. Both di Caprio and Pitt's characters are fictional. What's real though is the inclusion of plenty of real-life characters such as Roman Polanski, Sharon Tate, Steve McQueen, Bruce Lee and the members of the notorious Manson Family. The movie's story doesn't exactly follow the real-life actions of the Manson Family members culminating in the murders of several people, so the script takes an alternative history route where none of it happens. Just like Inglurious Basterds featured an alternative history script by having Hitler assassinated well before Germany's actual defeat in World War II.

This film being set in 1969, di Caprio's face has been digitally inserted into footage from movies and TV series of the era as if his character starred in them, and I liked that. There is also tons of pop culture references of the era.

"Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood" is by far Quentin Tarantino's movie with the least amount of violence. You almost see none of it as in previous Tarantino movies. Only in the end does Tarantino's trademark violence show up, and it's too brief by his standards. But it's still hilarious nonetheless.

My only complaint is that this movie is kind of a too happy bandwagon where everything just goes on auto pilot and little does actually happen. Moments like Pitt's character beating Bruce Lee, or di Caprio delivering a powerful performance in the set of Lancer, are far and few in between. Margot Robbie (portraying Sharon Tate) is merely present in the movie and Tarantino does nothing more than just show us how beautiful she is.

All in all, "Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood" is a fine summer movie directed by Quentin Tarantino, but don't go in expecting to watch another high-octane movie like Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Inglurious Basterds or Django Unchained. I hope Tarantino's next movie will be better than this.

That being said, this one is definitely one of the weaker in Tarantino’s filmography, despite a gorgeous look and two very good performances from its lead actors.
I think what ultimately kills this film is the aimlessness of its dialogue. This is Tarantino style dialogue, to be sure, but it isn’t quite Tarantino substance. Whereas in his other films, the dialogue is wandering and seemingly pointless at times, there was always a purpose behind every word. I don’t feel he was able to capture that cohesiveness that his other films managed to obtain. It’s not a terribly made movie, not at all. It just isn’t great.

TheA difficult movie to rate; Tarantino made a movie which is very characteristic for his style of filming. The shots and scenes are great, the characters give a great perfomance and Tarantino's magic touches show throughout the story. The problem is that it feels like Tarantino is pursuing two story lines, making neither feel complete; and this in a rather long movie. Because of these story lines, there are some amazing scenes which seem redundant to the story in the end. My feeling after watching the movie: "This is some crazy sh*t", but not necessarily because it was that good, but because the movie felt a bit crazy and therefore in the end has difficulties to truly shine.
Conclusion; some great filming, but it feels like Tarantino didn't really know how to create one complete enticing plot line.

With an ensemble cast of veterans and relative newcomers, a fantastic soundtrack and great cinematography to boot, Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood is all Show but no substance, a film in which has a running time of just under three hours, has no actual driving narrative hook, protagonist/antagonist conflict or character development/arcs whatsoever, this film is a poorly laced together act by act display, when the film feels like its going to become interesting? it does not. Will we spend enough with any other characters? No.

with the amount of attention this film has procured to be in the running for "Best Picture" for the 2020 Oscars is only on the soul reason of the Director, would i recommend you to watch this film? No, you could however look at this film and find your own point to its creative direction or lack thereof, after Tarantino's last blunder i was hopeful this would be good, i along with many others were let down, i used to be sad he would stop directing films, but nowadays, it feels like i am counting the days until Tarantino is out of Directors Chair.

I’m not sure why this got a much higher review than Jojo Rabbit which is much more interesting and a better movie. I suppose it’s mostly fans of Tarantino, which I am but this one needed a great deal of editing. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a Nostalgia movie. Some would say you would have had to have lived in the 60s to really “get it,” but Quentin Tarantino has done a fantastic job of capturing the period for the ones who didn’t. From the bus stop ads to the music, sentimental shots of Cliff driving down Forest Lawn Drive, QT has captured the flavor of Los Angeles in its time. Unfortunately, apart from the scenic portrait and the odd joke here and there, this screenplay was bland and slightly boring throughout. Whatever happened to the enigmatic dialogue that Quentin used to write? You’ll have to hit pause an hour in just to stop and ask yourself, “Is anything going to happen?” And something does happen, it’s just a slow drive getting there.

You should already know this, but if you are looking to see a film adaptation of ‘Helter Skelter’ and the events of Spahn Ranch and the Manson Family, then this movie is not for you. The Tate-LaBianca murders play a very small plot point of this movie, which makes for a bit of a disappointment since that is the climax and the apparent thing that the entire movie is building up to. That’s just it though; there is no buildup, or even a storyline for that matter. I’ve heard things like, “It’s not supposed to be a story movie,” or even, “it’s a character analysis.” Well, I don’t know about you, but last time I heard, movies were supposed to have a story. That was the central problem with Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood. I think it was made pretty clear before I watched it that it wasn’t going to be about Manson, but I’m still let down by this movie anyways. Why wouldn’t Tarantino have just made ‘Helter Skelter,’ based on Bugliosi’s accounts, and get to make a movie with an actual story/plot. He had all the materials, actors, and creative direction, but none of the output. I like that QT explores genres in each film, but in this case, I think he should have stuck to doing what he does well, which is chilling horror.

For a 3-hour movie, it could be said that this movie was actually too short. Quentin Tarantino does an excellent job of showing things happening on screen without anything actually happening. A lot of the events of the film were pointless and brought no real meaning to the story if there ever was one. For example, there is a lot of dialogue about this supposed “acid-dipped cigarette” that Cliff will eventually smoke, but it isn’t ever really elaborated on at all. While high, he fights like Cliff always does, and it doesn’t seem to affect him in any way. A 4-hour Director’s Cut is going to be released soon, but I doubt there will be any story in there either. Wouldn’t that be a laugh? The entire story was cut to make more room for flamethrowers and dirty feet. That’s all anybody really wanted to see anyways.

In summary, this movie was hilarious, had all the right Tarantino-esque scenes played out, great acting, and zero story. This could actually be seen in a positive light if you want it to, like re-inventing movies. Welcome to 2020: The dystopian reality of movies that are just series of cinematography with good music. Like, really good music. Using the original Batman music in the end was a nice touch. People said that you needed to really “know the history” to love this movie, but that was just it for me. I knew the history, read Helter Skelter from front to back, and I still didn’t think it was the masterpiece that some people say it is. It’s actually sad to think that this is what people call a masterpiece these days, but it is what it is. It was a pretty movie with good acting and a cathartic ending, but one that also leaves you begging the question, “What did I just watch?” You may feel robbed of your 3 hours or you may feel better for having had the experience. Either way, you’re still going to see Kill Bill 3 when it comes out.

3 stars.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Look. I didn’t hate this movie. It’s very well shot, well acted, and Tarantino’s style remains among my favourites of all time. It’s just that the characters are bland, nothing really happened in the whole 2.5 hour runtime, and it feels bloated to pad out the runtime.

This was the only movie where, in my small town theatre, I’ve ever seen people walk out before the end of the second act. Cool and intriguing story threads are left dangling there and never addressed again. The stunt double’s reputation for having murdered his wife and gotten away with it a la OJ Simpson? One brief scene sets it up and never discussed again. The Charles Manson murders are a driving influence, I guess, but Tarantino decides to characteristically play with history and allow Sharon Tate to live. (Also, Sharon Tate was played wonderfully by Margot Robbie, but every single one of her scenes was an unnecessary dip into Tarantino’s foot fetish.)

The last act leading up to the fight scene (one of the best scenes of the movie,) is awkwardly rushed and wraps everything up in a nice bow with absolutely no satisfaction for the audience.

In conclusion, I liked this film on a technical level, but creatively? There’s a lot to be desired here. Maybe consider this one when it’s in the $5 bin and you want to pad out your DVD collection.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the first Quentin Tarantino film I have ever seen, and I have heard nothing but good things about this legendary film maker and his movies. Hence, when I saw the trailer for this film, I was immediately intrigued with the concept of the film. There is so much you can do with a movie based in the film industry as the 1960’s come to a close, so I naturally decided that this would be my first Quentin Tarantino film that I would watch, and I was extremely disappointed.
Firstly, I would like to make note of what I enjoyed about this film. Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie all provided fantastic acting in this film. Their performances were so genuine and I really enjoyed what they brought to each of their own characters. Secondly, some of the cinematography is really nice. It was really clever how Quinten incorporated the old style of filmmaking into a modern narrative, and I think he excelled in doing this in the film. However, this is where my positivity for this film ends. This movie is just boring from start to finish. There is just something so uninteresting about a movie that is mainly based around watching characters go through each of their days for 2 and a half hours. Personally, great character writing and razor-sharp dialogue isn’t enough to carry a movie.
There are so many themes within the film that just flew over my head because there were so poorly conveyed by Quentin. I shouldn’t have to go researching about a film after I have seen it just so I can begin to see some form of value in it, but I did, and if anything, it just made me dislike the film even more. For example, upon my initial viewing, the character “Sharon Tate” seemed such a pointless and uninteresting character within this films context. She adds so little to the plot that her character could be remove and the narrative would still be exactly the same. However, upon researching about the film’s context, I learnt that the film was playing with the idea of showing the audience how in this universe, Sharon Tate was left unaffected by the events of the Tate-Labianca murders, and how she just lived a normal life. Once I read that, I thought that would have been such a brilliant concept if it was conveyed better to the audience, but it wasn’t. Instead, we are presented with an uninteresting, shallow character that has little to no significance. This goes for most of the underlying concepts explored within the movie, such as Quentin Tarantino providing a Hollywood ending of the Tate-Labianca murders as a representation of how Hollywood fictionalises real events. These themes are handles so poorly, and I just felt frustrated that the film only held value to me after I researched about its themes. It is an example of poor cinema and storytelling.
If you liked this movie, great, I have nothing but respect for you because I can very well understand why someone would enjoy a movie like this. But for me personally, it just felt like a waste of time to sit through and watch. From what I can tell, if you are a big fan of Quentin Tarantino movies, you’ll probably like this one, but other than that, I would not recommend this movie.

Secondly, I didn’t like the film. I found parts of it boring, Tarrantino seemed more interested in displaying this "Love letter to Hollywood" than creating interesting characters or a compelling story. The story has very little get up and go, which is weird for a Tarrantino movie. The ending felt abrupt and shoved in. One of fav Tarrantino movies was the Hateful Eight, simply because time was taken to introduce the characters and make them interesting and depth. In this movie the characters feel frankly shallow. The acting, unsurprisingly, was great and full of life. What let them down was the characters themselves. I didn’t care about any of them. This film felt like a bit of a weird hark back to a bi-gone era of boring and empty films. Sorry Tarrintino. Not a fan of this one. Expand
