I couldn't tell where this movie was headed for most of it, and I'm still not sure what the real plot line actually was. My advice to anyone considering a watch is to pay attention to the negative reviews... and ignore all the 10 ratings from QT fanboys. I've truly enjoyed his other movies, PF, KB, RD, H8 and the rest- and really looked forward to this one. Except for the final 20 minute signature gore and "weirdness" action, this was a boring snoozefest. Pitt and Leo are very good actors (Robbie not so much, but nice to look at), but the "dog" ended up being the character I enjoyed most. >;-) Expand

Definitely on my "one of the worst movies I've ever seen" list. Gluttonous and self indulgent to the max. Seriously, did I need to see the dog food slide out of the can and plop into the bowl every time Brad Pitt's character fed his damn dog? Or watch every clip Leo's character, the actor, played? (Maybe that's why it was nearly three hours long. It was like watching this movie and then "Rick Dalton's" movies. A crappy BOGO deal. Where in the world was the editor? An hour could have been deleted from this film and it would still be about nothing! Ridiculously over acted by all of the leads (excluding Margot Robbie but she was mostly just used as a prop anyway) and all were 2 dimensional cliched characters (or shall I say caricatures?). My friend and I were tempted to walk out but stayed in hopes there was a pay off. There was absolutely none. In fact the ending was just all together stupid. But if you love Tarantino camp, gore and violence, you do at least get that pay off I guess. I did give this movie at least a one, because the costumes and sets were amazing (as you would expect with that big of a budget), I loved the soundtrack, and the two youngest female characters (Julia Butters & Margaret Qualley) were the best parts of the entire movie. If you want to waste three hours of your life, then go see this film. If you just want to be educated on current pop culture, save yourself the time and watch the excellent trailer. Rex Reed from the Observer says it best, "Rancid, preposterous and hysterically over the top in ideas and execution, "once upon a time" perfectly describes writer-director Quentin Tarantino's ninth film."
"The movie drags on like a turtle on valium, cramming in the period clichés like concession-stand popcorn."
"They all seem to be guests at some insider wrap party to which the audience is not invited."

QT seems to occupy the position that Woody Allen held before he fell from Hollywood grace: stars want to be in his films to give themselves "artist cred". That can be the only explanation for why this roster of great actors/stars signed up for this non-event.

The worst part was how the dialog was curt and stiff. Until now, there was no better screenwriter in film than QT. Until now.

And poor Margot Robbie. She was left playing a vapid cookie cutter character with virtually nothing to add to the story except to be the historical prop of Sharon Tate.

My expectations were perhaps too high, but this was pablum. I cannot understand the critic reviews except to believe that they, like the actors, fall under QT's "artist director" spell.

Tarantino's humour is dramatically challenged and emotions mocked with silliness, there lies his film in between.

Once Upon A Time In... Hollywood

Tarantino's bluff is so smart that the entire film feels stupid. A joke. So now, the question it raises is, Is it funny? Not particularly. It is not a funny joke. It is a joke that you'd wish you had told. It is a joke that filters its audience out and then welcomes you to an open discussion that could last for hours. Good. Productive hours. For the writer-director, Quentin Tarantino is grabbing all the sensitive glasses in one tray and is serving us with an upbeating groovy music and a cautionary manual of "how to" deal with the film. Or more accurately, the final showdown. The entire film is just consuming energy for those last moments. That he exonerates in a big smile.. and not a laugh. This is smart filmmaking.

Up till now, I have been in awe of his writing in all the films. But after this film, I am leaning towards his maturity and confidence as a director. And as an evidence there is a scenario placed in the middle of the film where Cliff Booth played by Brad Pitt enters a red zone. Not only does the cinematography and background score glorifies Tarantino's legacy in that very antic, but as a part of narrative he whispers the secret of the film with utmost honesty and whisk of his signature absurdity.

Bonkers! is your reaction as you leave the screen and to protect that feeling is his bulletproof script that stands tall with him. Tarantino, as a writer has been lately considering himself to be drawn towards the literary art form, subjugates his and his project's place in his creative form just as Shakespeare used to do in his days. Often pitching himself on screen as a metaphor or the state or stage he has been through in his life, Tarantino's penultimate project- swooping in every last drop- sums up his work like a final chapter of a novel.

Ergo, by the time credits starts rolling everything and everyone has left the room, letting the dust settle and satisfaction flood in. Leonardo DiCaprio embodying a persona as Rick Dalton ought to be up for the game giddily considering how bottomless the pit is when it comes to the emotions of his characters. It is a role that anyone would love to have and yet not taking it for granted, DiCaprio's finest moments can be seen on set fumbling and riffing with his co-stars.

But I have been in love with underrated character since the very beginning. And ergo Pitt's Cliff resonates more strongly to me than anyone. Primarily, because it had very less chances to work on screen. Often audience reacts to empathy in a character and for a character that never sees a fall in the film, Pitt has a daunting task to make those half-grins charismatic and also earned. And on that note, Pitt steals the show with a Hawaiian shirt, c***y know-it-all attitude, a loyal dog and pretty standard one-liners; which I think doesn't just signifies the Once Upon A Time In... Hollywood part but the whole lifespan of it.

Obviously going in I knew that this movie would be divisive, considering the subject matters of the film. I knew that fans were going to have a tough time with this one. One of the main criticisms for this film is that it has no plot. I strongly disagree. QT's intentions here are to show a historical portrayal of Hollywood and the 60s. The film uses Dalton's arch to exemplify that. The film is very similar to Pulp Fiction in how it's constructed. The two leads are grerat, but for me, It's one of DiCaprio's best roles ever. Expand

Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood took me by surprise of how bad it was, I mean I consider myself QT fan, I really like all of his films except that Death Proof one.

Getting things straight, I found this movie really boring, with ultra extensive and useless plots, I really liked Leonardo DiCaprio's and Brad Pitt's characters, quite a lot, but it seems that the movie didn't know what to do with them, instead we have this long scenes where they're supposed to be developing their characters but nothing happens and everything feels pointless and time-wasting. Sure there are some scenes here and there that are not short of brilliant but, their sum doesn't save the overall movie.

It seems that is like a love letter to that era of film making but it felt to me more snobbish than anything, and also it doesn't add anything to the story. As for the Manson plot which is allegedly the main plot, well, maybe it could turn out better without it.

There isn’t much of a plot or a story. The movie feels like a big prank by Tarantino to see if everyone will love the movie because they feel like they have to. Expand

I can't deny it: I'm disappointed. I'm disappointed because beyond my personal expectations I think this is the first Quentin Tarantino film since Jackie Brown that leaves me feeling empty.
I say this for very simple reasons and it's that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is the most simplistic film of the director and it sounds strange to say that about him and his work but it's the truth, at least in my point of view.

I don't know what kind of film he tried to nail down. I don't know what he was trying to say. I don't know where he was pointing but obviously there isn't much to take in. Because if there's something that happens to this film, it's that its plot is practically non-existent and it's just events that are everywhere to try to make this stuff more cohesive.

I must make something very clear and that is that for this story both the Manson family and Sharon Tate are simply collateral elements to reach an end.
I don't know how somebody could try to justify it otherwise, but Margot Robbie is more than useless for the full development of this film. She's only an instrument to construct the conclusion of the narrative and I suppose that this is the reason why she ends up surviving in this story, because it would have been despicable to use her death as a plot resource.

Obviously the film is built on a fairly weak narrative base and there's no way to fix it. That's the way it's built and most of the time you don't know where things are going with either of the two main characters. Both the character of Brad Pitt and DiCaprio are only parts of their environment. They don't have a beginning and obviously they don't have an ending.
Both actors are excellent, I cannot deny that, they're two veteran connoisseurs of their work but their great performances don't justify the whole experience.
As much as I tried to find a meaning, there never was one. The succession of events only occurr to fill the gaps while the climax is being built and when you finally reach that ending, which is a total Tarantino ending, I couldn't help thinking that when it arrived it was already too late and sincerely, as I said in the beginning when that ending comes, the feeling of emptiness begins to make a dent in you.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood it feels as if I had seen a fable without a moral, without direction and sadly kinda meaningless.
I understand that for many people this film represents a tribute from Tarantino to a completely disappeared era. That is a love letter to Hollywood. A love letter to his industry and I guess that is understandable to some extent, but sincerely analyzing the whole thing, I can't take a small thing out of my head, and is that if this is a love letter... well it's a love letter that pretty much says nothing at all.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think this is a great QT Film. A different genre than he's done previously (3 Crime, 2 Western, 1 WWII, 2 revenge Kung Fu) This is just a Story Driven Drama. Always strong characters aret in his stories and these are even more so. THe whole flick delves deep into these 2 guys and it truly is, IMHO his best on that level. A fitting homage to a legend made so by tragedy (her widower's infamy not withstanding) But Sharon Tate deserved this. A true Fary Tail with a Fairy Tail ending and Brad briegly revisits and old part that fiorst made him famous, allbeit for a single line of dialogue, but it went a long way for me. An amazing movie I will pay to see again. Expand

Yes and no.To appreciate all its pleasures--this is the rare film that should be seen more than once. Director Quentin Tarantino, the ultimate rule-breaker, is at it again in “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.” A kinder, gentler Tarantino? Yes and no. While the main arc of the film features two mellow buddies driving around Los Angeles, most of this bad-boy director’s trademark violence and revenge is left for the end.

The buddies are TV – and wannabe movie – actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double, Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). DiCaprio and Pitt together are as fine as you can imagine they would be. Pitt is surprisingly willing to play second-fiddle (or so it seems) to DiCaprio.

Good as it is, that buddy bit, male bonding and all, is secondary to the film’s themes. One is the built-in anxiety of the B actor, or of anyone who feels his or her career may be heading south (does that include Tarantino?). Another is the role of the Charles Manson murders in the American psyche. Stitching these two ideas together is another demonstration of Tarantino’s talent.

The heart of the film’s plot is cross-cutting between Dalton in his film-within-a-film; Sharon Tate in the audience of a Westwood theater, watching herself in “The Wrecking Ball,” with Dean Martin; and Booth’s surreal experience at the Spahn Ranch where the Manson cult figures are chillingly menacing (Margaret Qualley [as enticing jail-bait], Lena Dunham and Dakota Fanning play three of the “Manson girls” – and watch for Bruce Dern as ranch owner George Spahn). It takes time for this intersection to develop, and when it does, it’s powerful. The date on the screen is August 8, 1969.

“Once Upon a Time …” is also an ode to Los Angeles, albeit a very different one from 2016’s “La La Land.” There are no loving long-shots of LA, but many close-in, insider references – even to Tarantino’s own 35 mm theater, now known as “The New Beverly,” described here as a porn theater (and perhaps it was in the 1960s). The Spahn Ranch, a movie setting and ranch, where the Manson gang hangs out, was real, as was the movie Tate watches on her last day on earth.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Lets try to compare the classic Pulp Fiction to this film. QT follows a lose formula. To begin, all the actors in this movie are good. In Pulp , much of the story revolved around Vince Vega and Jules. In this one, Rick and Cliff are the principles. Loose comparison between Sharon Tate and Mia in Pulp but he gave Uma's character much better lines. Robby looks like Tate but thats where it ends. The Manson family sort of a collection of Marcellus Wallace parts. Bad guys but interesting and then of course, Tarantino's famous cameo roles. With Bruce Willis' Butch, Christopher Walken, Harvey Kietel, Eric Stolze, he hit the mother lode. Pacino, Damian Lewis , Bruce Dern, Kurt Russell's characters not even close. In conclusion. I think he got lucky with Pulp Fiction. Its a top 50 all time movie. One upon a Time in Hollywood is a mess and more indicative of Tarantino's true talent as a director. I alway like DiCaprio but in the this film, I thought Brad stole the show Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Idk about this one, really felt like this movie should’ve been great, it wasn’t bad like some reviews might leave you to believe, but it wasn’t as good as so many are putting it out to be. The Acting, Spectacular; The Setting, extremely warm and nostalgic; But The Plot, Non - Existent. The whole movie just rambled on at times and felt like it was getting nowhere (On a side note: the way the characters at the playboy mansion were introduced felt a little lazy on tarantino’s part). The whole vibe of the movie and the acting throughout was what brought my rating to as high as it did. I honestly expected more and i am, in a way, disappointed. Expand

Between a star-studded cast, great reviews from critics, and one of the best directors of all time Once Upon a Time In Hollywood had potential to be an amazing movie. Leo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt acted great in their respective roles, but Margot Robbie was dulled down to no more than an emotionless mannequin with little to no dialogue. The film tries to recreate previous action and excitement from older Tarantino films but falls short. The story is convoluted and drags on for way longer than it should. The only good part is the ending where we finally get some of the signature Tarantino violence but it does not make up for the unnecessary scenes and confusing plot line. All in all, this movie had so much potential to be great but unfortunately falls apart into mediocrity. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Long, bloated and lacking in a compelling, cohesive plot. Lots of scenes don't really drive the narrative at all. Two stinkers in a row for Tarantino now. The climax at the end couldn't even save it for me. I was hoping they'd save Tate in her own residence, that would have been more cathartic for the audience and made more sense. If real history had been unfolding and through a minor twist of events Brad Pitt wanders over there tripping out and saves the day. Then Bruce Lee could have shown up as Mansen's new recruit, like a boss, and finished his fight with Pitt. Why not, it's all make believe anyway. Great acting from everyone involved though. Expand

Once upon a time there was a director who said he would only make 10 movies and in the case of Tarantino he should probably have stopped at #8.

The problem, of course, is that #9, "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," is not actually a movie. I'm not sure what it is. It has characters. It has dialog. It has things that hint at suspense and the possibility of some kind of action happening at some future date. But it doesn't seem to have much of a story. Anecdotes, yes; story, not so much. And frankly it isn't really what I would describe as "entertaining."

It's more like what I would describe as a shaggy dog story, which Dictionary.com defines as "a funny story, traditionally about a talking dog, that, after an often long and involved narration of unimportant incidents, has an absurd or irrelevant punch line."

The key phrase is "long and involved narration of unimportant incidents."

You could skip most of the film and just catch the last 20 or 30 minutes and you'd get as much out of this as I did. Or just imagine walking into a Manhattan art gallery. On one wall is an image resembling Andy Warhol's stack of Campbell's Soup cans. Only instead of soup cans it's cans of Green Giant peas. You stand there staring at those cans of peas for 161 minutes. Do you get anything out of it? Well, I guess that's for you to say.

Personally, if Tarantino ever comes out with #10 I think I'll re-watch I Claudius, or Key Largo, or Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead, or even Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse. Those were movies (even the mini-series among them), rather than shaggy dog stories or practical jokes.

While this movie has great cast, great scenes and setting of Hollywood in those years and depicts well how an actor's life could be then plus can feel Tarantino vibes, this movie still is quite weak plot wise - most of the movie nothing really happens just shows random stuff. Yes you can say it shows how it is for actor to do his work, but overall there are too many filler shots of like Brad Pitt randomly driving around etc. The most interesting topic about Manson murders etc is covered only a bit. Basically the last half hour is really great but the rest is lacking. One of the worst Tarantino movies for me and I like all of his movies. Expand

Once Upon a Time In Hollywood – Even The Name is ‘Borrowed’

QT’s latest indulgence is all about his one-way fixation with the ‘60s. At 160+ mins it’s a long trudge but the script probably only had few pages if compared with other movies of this length, why?... So many scenes are made up of shots of bods getting into cars, then long internal shot from back seat (lifted from the far better Gun Crazy’ 50s) then bods get out of car, long shots of feet walking, more bods get into cars, more long internal driving shot, bods again get out of car, more feet walking. This format is repeated from beginning to end –pages of same-- The 60s heralded in a new low for movie making – features like; ‘Beach Blanket Bingo’, ‘How to Stuff a Wild Bikini ’, ‘Sergeant Deadhead’ were playing as main features across the land, el-cheapo’s had become the new norm. What would usually have been a ‘B’ picture were now being sold as an ‘A’. Yes. it may have helped a jaded Hollywood at that time but what about other mainstream audiences?

So, what might have influenced TQs fixation with this downturn in the social morays of movies? Tarantino grew up in the swinging ‘60s/mod‘70s working in a porn cinema (this perhaps explains his addiction to perversity) including a video store - while also watching the endless re-runs of TV shows, along with an overflowing barrage of low budget, Spaghetti westerns that had flooded the market - thank goodness some audiences grew up (well, some did) and demanded better. These endless ‘homage’s to days offering little more than cheap TV-style quickies --now being released to the big screen --- with product that was generally catering for a guideless, acid tripping youth (such as the Manson crew, etc) wanting endless simple-minded partying. Hollywood producers loved it – now, for half the normal budgets, they were getting the same financial returns as quality features. QT has simply revived those days and a new ‘comic book hero’ generation have picked it up. Only this time around, the budgets are BIGGER while the contents remain juvenile, if not ridiculous. Trouble is, too many of today’s producers and art critics also grew up in this overly comfortable, ‘anything goes’ era, so they wrap on about the glorious emptiness that’s making them all rich. Some rave about the cinematography and design - with that much money being thrown about it's simple to ‘copy’ the work of previous Masters. But, no matter how expensively dressed-up and stylishly packaged rubbish maybe, it’s still rubbish (but, GOOD-LOOKING rubbish). Too much you might be saying? Take a look back, revisit many of those poorly scripted, badly acted, TV shows and movies of the 50s-60s – the ones Q.T. tends to dote over...you may be surprised how your memory may have failed you as just how poor most were. Once U.A.T.I.H. looks like several proposed projects that never got off the ground all edited into one, and doesn’t do justice to any of them. One or two characters and situations looked as if they may have been leading to something but simply fizzled out. How long might it take before more look back and ask, how were we so fooled? Or is it just that LESS has now become the new MORE?

So, if this is Q.Ts 9th may there be only one left to go. Please (if we must that is)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. With only a few captivating scenes, everything else is a bore. It has been a month since I've seen it, and only 3 scenes is memorable: 1. Cliff (Brad Pitt) fighting Bruce Lee, 2. Cliff beating up a Manson Family member for puncturing his tyre, and 3. The final scene where Pitt trips on acid and beats up the Manson Family members in Rick's (Leonardo DiCaprio) house, effectively cancelling the Tate murders. Everything else in the movie is just conversations after conversations that I couldn't appreciate and even link to anything besides understanding that Rick's a washed out sad sack of sh*t actor, Cliff's a loyal lapdog who probably killed his wife, and Sharon's dancing/vanity. All actors acted well, but Margot's Sharon Tate was the most useless--only being a dancing bimbo. DiCaprio's a washed out actor who keeps getting mad and sad at himself, and Pitt's his loyal stunt man. Of all three, only Pitt scenes gives more entertainment as compared to the constant rant and conversations with (all) other characters in the film. The conversations also are extremely boring and a chore to watch and listen as they serve no purpose whatsoever. Or I might be born too late to actually live through and understand this cinema age and lifestyle of the celebs shown in this film--whatever it is, it's a bore. Heck, even the final scene where Cliff (Pitt) defends Rick's (DiCaprio) house was a tad dark and unable to really see the violent and gruesome effects--which is what Tarantino's films is all about. Only the final scene here has that signature scene of Tarantino, and even that's not delivered at it's best to fully appreciate. It's just a grind. You can literally skip most, if not all scenes/conversations in this film and still watch through it not missing anything out. Watching through it all--I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. Expand

'Once upon a time in hollywood' is a snooze fest wrapped as a love story to glory days. The payoff in the last 20 mins was anti-climatic. None of the characters were memorable, rather washouts and full of self doubt. The biggest proof that this was a weak installment is the fact that not a single meme has entered popular culture from this film, unlike Tarantino's other works. Similar to 'The Last Jedi', the critics are falling over themselves to praise his snooze fest, out of FOMO than anything else. If Tarantino intends to end at film 10, he better knock it out of the park, otherwise unlike Michael Jordan, he will leave too late. Expand

I couldn't tell if this entire film was a troll to the audience or not!?

The worst film I've seen Al Pacino in.
The worst film I've seen Brad Pitt in.
The worst film I've seen Leonardo DiCaprio in.
The worst film I've seen Margot Robbie in.

It's simply a film you won't want to watch again, whether you somehow enjoyed it, or not.

Style over substance. Zero plot. Smug. Pointless and overblown. Poor script. Some strong acting and some imaginative shots but ultimately in dire need of an edit.

One of Tarantino’s best. The classic hang out/buddy film done to perfection. Movie moves slow compared to his other work, but pays off in glorious fashion.

Brad Pitt does an amazing job and steals the show in numerous places as the laid back anti hero badass helper boy to Leo.
Great to see Leo really shine as a new more broken type of character that we haven't yet seen him play before. Margot is seldom seem, would have been great to utilise her more. Seems like she got lost in her own movie... This said - go watch this film. It's an enjoyable journey and the characters have some very great moments. They really shine in this film and it's clear they are all having fun Too. Congrats I give this movie an 8

Superb. Tarantino's standard tropes are refreshed here by his great cast and brilliant pacing. A liberating bird is flipped to Time and Tide here.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a excellent film mainly due to its charm to the then Hollywood. The story is great and so is the soundtrack. I don't know much about how to comment on this. Just a nice spectacle. I recommend.

An homage towards himself, by himself, for himself and the ones supporting his career, thrown in the dirt unthoughtful and unthankful by mediocre viewers who did not understand that a good movie is not to be measured by the number of action scenes ( although then it would still be a very good movie, if you got a bit of background knowledge). A stunning comical rejoice of a great filmmakers career, made for the educated public. Expand

However, the cast is really who brought this movie to the just barely passable level that it achieves. Simply put it has no plot, there is no real problem produced, no actual climax and there is also no satisfying resolution to any of it. Sure the performance by Leo and Pitt are spectacular, but without them, I cannot even imagine what this movie would have been like. There where however some very cool sequences and ideas, plus the fact that we got to see what it was like to watch a scene shot in real-time. the long take and resets were cool and it was surreal to see how movies like this are shot. The stigma behind Tarantino and what a lot of people know him for is his great storytelling and interesting ways of telling it, (take Pulp Fiction as an example) but this one simply felt as if there was no real substance to it.
In conclusion, read up on the Manson family before watching this movie because you will enjoy it a bit more if you do, but Once Apon a Time in Hollywood seems like Tarantino simply missed the mark, and if it was not for Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio this movie would have fallen completely flat.
An endnote, I am going to see this again tonight so maybe I will leave with something more out of it and if I do I will change this review and my score.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The actors really carried the show this time. Amazing dialog as expected. Great performances. It doesn't stand on its own. If you are so in love with hollywood that you ever bothered to read about the horrible acts of the Manson 'family' then its probably a good movie; otherwise, this movie wasn't made for you and just wont make sense. You will wonder things like, why did they waste Margot Robbie on a character whose story doesn't exist in the movie. All the plot of a short film, in a pretentiously long double length movie. Tarantino has jumped the shark.

To be clear, all the actors do an amazing job and the characters are rich and dialoge is amazing. The movie just doesn't stand on its own and make sense on its own. Its an amazing performance, but a bad movie.

Usually the user scores are higher than the critic rating but this time it’s the opposite and that says something. I went in expecting more I guess. It just didn’t seem to have any story at all and no development or explanation of anything, just about 3 hours of nostalgia trip. People who lived in that era will probably love this film more than I did but at the end I was like - that’s it? It’s a well-made, well acted movie but most Tarantino films have amazing dialogue scenes that this film lacked. It was mostly just montages of old 60s style movies and TV shows. Overall it was funny and the cast was terrific. I’d recommend seeing it but it won’t blow your mind or anything. it’s Expand
