Rick Dalton (Leonardo Dicaprio) is a famous yet struggling Hollywood actor and his stunt man Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) unintentionally gets involved with the Manson family. The movie has a lot of great humour, acting, and characters all around. It also does an exceptional job depicting the Manson story as well as what living in Hollywood was like in the late 60s. Its easy to get invested in the characters and the setting, especially if you have an appreciation for filmmaking. If you don't know much about Charles Manson already, I'd recommend researching the basics of his story first as some of the movie will come off as confusing. Otherwise I'd recommend the movie to everyone, especially if you are a fan of Tarantino and/or filmmaking in general. Expand

"Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood" is Quentin Tarantino's love letter to the Hollywood of the 1950s and 1960s and a fine movie, but this is not a typical Tarantino movie either.

The main story is about an aging actor (Leonardo di Caprio) and his trusted stunt double (Brad Pitt) struggling in 1969 Hollywood. Both di Caprio and Pitt's characters are fictional. What's real though is the inclusion of plenty of real-life characters such as Roman Polanski, Sharon Tate, Steve McQueen, Bruce Lee and the members of the notorious Manson Family. The movie's story doesn't exactly follow the real-life actions of the Manson Family members culminating in the murders of several people, so the script takes an alternative history route where none of it happens. Just like Inglurious Basterds featured an alternative history script by having Hitler assassinated well before Germany's actual defeat in World War II.

This film being set in 1969, di Caprio's face has been digitally inserted into footage from movies and TV series of the era as if his character starred in them, and I liked that. There is also tons of pop culture references of the era.

"Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood" is by far Quentin Tarantino's movie with the least amount of violence. You almost see none of it as in previous Tarantino movies. Only in the end does Tarantino's trademark violence show up, and it's too brief by his standards. But it's still hilarious nonetheless.

My only complaint is that this movie is kind of a too happy bandwagon where everything just goes on auto pilot and little does actually happen. Moments like Pitt's character beating Bruce Lee, or di Caprio delivering a powerful performance in the set of Lancer, are far and few in between. Margot Robbie (portraying Sharon Tate) is merely present in the movie and Tarantino does nothing more than just show us how beautiful she is.

All in all, "Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood" is a fine summer movie directed by Quentin Tarantino, but don't go in expecting to watch another high-octane movie like Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Inglurious Basterds or Django Unchained. I hope Tarantino's next movie will be better than this.

Tarantino is the best kind of filmmaker. He's the kind who has such an appreciation for everything that's come before him, but is always looking for something new. He infuses all of his characters with his own style of catchy dialogue, whilstTarantino is the best kind of filmmaker. He's the kind who has such an appreciation for everything that's come before him, but is always looking for something new. He infuses all of his characters with his own style of catchy dialogue, whilst still ensuring that they all have their own memorable personalities whilst assembling casts who know how to bring these characters to life. At a time when it feels far too many mainstream films have become predictable, you never really know exactly where a Tarantino film is going to take you. One moment you'll be watching a boxer on the run from a crime boss, before all of a sudden those same characters are tied up next to gimp as Comanche starts to play.

It's this same unpredictability that underscores the entirety of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It's similar to Pulp Fiction in the sense that it doesn't really follow any traditional narrative and instead lets the characters drive the story as they go through their daily lives. First there's Leonardo DiCaprio's Rick Dalton. He's a TV actor who's always on the verge of his big break, but the biggest roles are always just out of reach as they always go to other contemporaries like Steve McQueen. He's still doing well in the industry with a recognisable name, a house in Hollywood and receiving offers to star in spaghetti westerns. But in spite of all his success, he feels as though his life stuck in westerns doesn't let him live up to his full potential as an actor, as just like a lot of people at the time he views the spaghetti westerns as a cheap form of entertainment. Similar to how the current age of Hollywood is coming to an end, he fears that he's no longer in his prime.

He's supported by his best pal and close friend Cliff Booth, played by Brad Pitt. Without any stunts to do, he finds himself stuck doing chores for Rick, driving him around wherever he needs to go and picking him up when he gets down. In contrast to Rick who reaps the success of his life in Hollywood, Cliff is both the metaphorical and literal punching bag of the industry, but he's so easy going and care free that he doesn't give a damn. He's just happy to help out his buddy and is described as being "more than a friend and less than a wife."

Finally there's Margot Robbie playing Sharon Tate. Whilst Rick and Cliff are both starting to fall out of the industry, Tate is very much on the rise as the talk of the town as her career is still on the rise and embraces it with a very unselfish sense of joy. One of her best moments is just seeing the genuine pleasure she gets from being in the audience and seeing how much the audience is enjoying her performance.

In the background of all this, Manson and his followers keep popping up throughout the film. On the one hand, their presence creates a creepy atmosphere whenever they're on screen with the film becoming much quieter, especially when Cliff visits the Manson ranch and we see them thriving in the broken set of old western shows watching his every move in complete paranoia. But similar to Stuntman Mike in Death Proof, he shows the pathetic bumbling side of these killers with the script showing nothing but disdain for both their viewpoint and their actions.

Though even with the underlined bleakness present within the setting of a dying age of Hollywood history, just like the fairy tale nature of the title suggests we do get drenched in the culture of late 60's Hollywood. Stars like Steve McQueen and Bruce Lee will randomly pop up. Whenever the characters are driving the background is always filled with billboards and fashion plucked from the era. There's even a series of both real and fake radio ads throughout the film, some of which are even included in the films soundtrack to create a real radio experience.

But more than anything else, Taranino's love of cinema really shines through, with characters going into great detail on how an actor like Rick would operate in this time through guest spots on network shows and the filming techniques employed by spaghetti western filmmakers. It's a true snapshot of life in 60's Hollywood and Tarantino's love letter to the final moments of Hollywood's golden age. It's also filled with so much great comedy, memorable character moments and ends on such a high note that the films 2 hour 41 minute runtime just leaves you wanting more.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Once upon in Hollywood may have tied The Hateful Eight as my favorite Tarantino film. It was different from standard Tarantino films as in it wasn't very violent, apart from the ending. However, I feel that Cliff Booth and Rick Dalton are my favorite duo in any film I've ever seen. The Hateful Eight, I preferred in terms of story and plot. This movie was oddly touching; a unique spin on an American tragedy. I was on the edge of my seat at the end, fearing that our beloved anti-heroes would perish, as well. But, for once in a Tarantino film, this had a clear cut happy ending for all parties... Well, all likeable parties, involved. I hope this won't be Tarantino's last film (though I expect it is with him starting a family). However, if it is, it was a phenomenal film to go out on. Expand

In life, don't we want to have the success and acclaim of Leo the actor? However, don't we also want to be as cool as Pitt the stuntman? We want a combination of acclaim and charisma, but we don't want to be told what to do like an actor, and we don't want to get no credit like the stuntman. Overall, great movie. Maybe it's recency bias, but I think it is Tarantino's third best film. Expand

Thankfully, he has talent to spare. Tarantino makes wait for the bloody conclusion we know he'll give us, making us follow and hang out with the characters as they deal with their everyday life and their own personal issues. Sometimes it may feel like it's going nowhere, until we get there and we discover that the destination is both amazing and surprisingly touching. This is the kind of film that you're not sure what to think of when the credits roll, but the more you think about it, the more you realize that you had way more fun than you thought at first. It's not Tarantino's best, but that's only because we expect certain things from him; we get them, just in a way he's never done it before: detached and restrained. It feels like a ticking bomb; at times he ticking takes so long, it could drive you insane, but when it finally blows up, the damage is unbelievable. Expand

A Quentin Tarantino flick centeredIf I was your regular twice a month movie-goer who cared more about entertainment and less about quality control, I wouldn’t be able to appreciate “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” the way I do right now. A Quentin Tarantino flick centered around New Hollywood with a Martin Scorsese biopic style setup doesn’t feel like much at first but underneath the surface, it follows an unbelievably riveting personal rise and fall story coupled with moments that matter, characters that were memorable, visions that were exploited thanks to stellar cinematography and editing, easter eggs and subtleties that helped expand this world of a glorious past we may or may not have experienced and a script with such magnetic, gripping, well crafted thought and weight to its originality and class that this alternate fairytale evolves itself into the closest thing to Grand Theft Auto meets Inherent Vice that we could get. It really was that majestic to me. Just like Mike Moh’s Bruce Lee, the film felt impeccable.

Now I understand why he calls this film his most personal one yet as well as his love letter to L.A: This was the era of Hollywood that helped define him, that helped turn him into one of the most unconventional yet successfully name’s in the industry but even he knows time is against him. The film is deeply personal about the topic of friendship and the hierarchy centered around scratching and clawing to stay alive in a constantly evolving industry that subverts innocence in exchange for status. How, in order to attain it, we gotta go to a dark place. True innocence against human nature at its worst.....once again. If I were to nitpick and dissect a flaw, it’d have to be that over-extensive runtime. But then again, no film is perfect. So aside from that, Tarantino.....if this is your last film, then what a legacy you’ve left behind, good sir.

First off, its themes contrasting the glitz and glamor with the squalor and instability of Los Angeles have been done to death, although the character exploration of DiCaprio's Rick Dalton is pretty great. Furthermore, the film has no sense of direction, as the film goes from place to place with little flow or moments of impact usually found in Tarantino's films, making the overall film feel uneventful and boring. Finally, and most glaringly of all, Tarantino is at his most self-indulgent in this film. The film/actor nods, in-jokes, and references are solely done to serve his own ego and admiration of vintage Hollywood. The extremely stretched out dialogue and pointless scenes serve to be solely stroke his ego and throw ineffective character moments at the audience. This adds up to a painful 2 hour 40 minute run time that feels like it could've been cut down to 2 hours at least if not even shorter. These three problems among others amount to a film that wanes in comparison to the rest of Tarantino's masterpieces. Expand

Between a star-studded cast, great reviews from critics, and one of the best directors of all time Once Upon a Time In Hollywood had potential to be an amazing movie. Leo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt acted great in their respective roles, but Margot Robbie was dulled down to no more than an emotionless mannequin with little to no dialogue. The film tries to recreate previous action and excitement from older Tarantino films but falls short. The story is convoluted and drags on for way longer than it should. The only good part is the ending where we finally get some of the signature Tarantino violence but it does not make up for the unnecessary scenes and confusing plot line. Well however many films he intends on making none will feel quite as personal as Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood.

Set in 1969 LA, Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) are struggling to find fame in the final years of Hollywood’s Golden age. Desperate to stay as part of the Hollywood scene Dalton can’t handle the fact that he’s becoming a has-been actor as he strives for perfection. If you thought DiCaprio’s scenery chewing performance in Django Unchained was entertaining to watch then you’re sure to love him in Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood. DiCaprio and Pitt make a great double act, a joy to behold, Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate was also superb casting. A star studded cast (not you Lena Dunham) that’s sure to bring in a crowd. Now I’m not sure what happened in the editing room but there are more than a few scenes from the trailer that you won’t see in the film itself and FYI for anyone who got excited about seeing Mike Moh as Bruce Lee in this film, if you’ve seen the trailer then that’s about it. There are moments that are painfully dragged out, I just didn’t feel we needed to sit in the car with the characters while they’re driving around again and again. I couldn’t help but be reminded of The Hateful Eight, scenes that linger on for longer than necessary, I feel at some point the story needs to get on with it. Tarantino is enjoying filming a scene so much he almost doesn’t want to move on to the next scene. The film is set during the Manson murders so the constant sense of unease is building towards disaster. I will also admit I was one of those concerned few who was apprehensive about Tarantino taking on a film set during the Manson murders but he handled it in a way that was not only unexpected but thoroughly entertaining. If you’ve seen Inglourious Basterds then you know Tarantino doesn’t exactly take historical accuracies into consideration and the same can be said for Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood. Best not to dwell on that and just go with it.

Yes I’d consider myself a Tarantino fan, though in my opinion he reached his peak long ago. And although there’s a lot I like about his style of filming making, the shocking violence, the well-written characters having conversations about seemingly nothing. I could definitely survive without the foot obsession and the pointless narration. I’m sure if you ask anyone they’ll each rank their favourite Tarantino films differently (but I’ll fight anyone who thinks Death Proof is anywhere in the top five) I don’t feel Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood is quite up there with Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill. Each to their own, no one divides an audience quite like Quentin Tarantino, despite being too long it’s entertaining and funny, with perhaps two of the best performances from DiCaprio and Pitt. Highly recommended for all the Tarantino fans.

Excellent! The movie is at the same time a loving easy pace with some shocking unexpected (wtf) reactions. I felt like been guided through a vintage Hollywoodian theme park experiencing part of the life of the amazing people that lived/worked there.

The great work about 1960th years in Hollywood. This film hasn't many actions, but it has a beautiful old atmosphere, dialogs, actor's playing (DiCaprio is the best, honestly) and impressive end if you know a background of real history

What it had in detail it lacked in immersions despite both being so interwoven. I'm left scratching my head as to what went wrong for me and when I think about the story I struggle find one other than a look into a brief moment of a few people's lives. This wasn't really enough for me to care about the characters and really struggle to answer the question of what was the point of this film. One might say it is to shine a light to the masses about the time period in Hollywood but we know Tarantino isn't interested in replicating history. So what was the point? To tweak events so people can forget what really happened? Even that can't be true because in comparison to the body of work of this great film maker there isn't much to remember in this film. The acting was top class and again the details were really impressive and the devil is in the details. But I would have liked to see more of the devilish sense of fear when dealing with these events. Could this movie be edited in a way to improve the film, absolutely. There is a backbone of a good film here but originality should always be commended but not always rewarded. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. OUATIH is just not for everyone. Going into the movie I had no idea what it was about, ultimately hoping QT was going to rewrite history, and he does, and I didn't see it coming -- not in that violent a fashion. We all know how one night's circumstances can change the lives of many, and this did. The Country was already divided with hippies, the war, etc. I remember this well and appreciated it because I'm familiar with the history of the times. I think if someone of a different age/historical memory may now be aware of the Manson murders, you just won't get it. QT gave the killers -- instead of Sharon Tate & friends, horrific violent deaths -- a reversal of misfortune. I found the film extremely moving, oddly enough (unkown at the time) seeing in on 8/8, same date as the murders. It's by far the best movie he's done, and it hit home that once upon a time in hollywood some of this unfortunatlely happened, for real. Expand

I could watch Rick Dalton (DiCaprio) & Cliff Booth (Pitt) navigate 1960s Hollywood all day long. The friendship between the two lead characters, and Dalton’s coping with the unknown limbo and stage of his career, was truly enjoyable to watch. Now I was born in ‘79, so didn’t live in that era, but man did it feel like they hit a homerun on the authenticity and personality of it.

The movie portrays Sharon Tate with a sweetness and genuine optimism on her future, with the success she’d worked towards coming to fruition. It felt like through Margot Robbie’s nuanced performance we know Sharon Tate a bit more than previously (despite outside sociopolitical criticisms to the character’s lack of dialogue). And say what you will about your opinion on Tarantino’s relationship with women, but if anything, this movie avenges Tate’s murder in a way, and pays homage to her life and career.

There was also an element of old vs. young, and while it was maybe unfair that the youth were represented by the Manson kids, boy did their attitude look familiar.

The pacing and tone might not be for everyone, and it may veer away from people’s expectations of a Tarantino film, but for me this was my most enjoyed movie in a while, and overall favorite of Tarantino’s. For me it was a 10, but it’s probably a true 8, and any score below a 6 is dishonest and personal.

Tarantino's ode to the 1969 Los Angeles of his youth is an alternate history that pretty much everyone can get behind. The end of Sixties innocence is pushed back into a time machine that meanders through the streets and studio sets of Hollywood, as network television is depicted as a boon and a threat at the same time to the working actor. Some of the scenes are almost excruciatingly long but like Wes and PT Anderson, best just to trust the process.

Pitt and DiCaprio are terrific, but Margot Robbie steals the show without much dialogue. Her Sharon Tate is kind of perfect. A sub-par but beautiful actress who is a beam of light that wants nothing but happiness for herself, Roman, Jay, and her unborn child.

The violence at the climax is satisfying, but upon reflection also deeply troubling. We are voyeurs to an outcome opposite to what history has told us. And yet we are still savagely rooting for payback that never was or will be ever realized.

It's been years since I read "Helter Skelter", one of the great non-fiction crime novels of all time. It was challenging while watching the film trying to recall some of the true details of the book, as Tarantino gleefully tip-toed the historical line right up to the end.

Expand

“Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood” stars Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio and was

written and directed by Quentin Tarentino. Imagine trying to rate a dinner cooked by

a chef when the oven fails and you have to wait until a later time to finish the meal.

This is the situation I found myself in when, a week ago and 2/3 into the film, the entire theater complex went dark due to a power failure and I had to catch the last 1/3 of the film 7 days later. So now, with that burden disclosed and acknowledging that I never was really a fan of Mr. DiCaprio, I must confess that I found the film not only entertaining but well written and well acted too. Mr. DiCaprio was thoroughly believable as a “Clint Eastwood type” who, like Clint, goes from Western TV actor (i.e. “Rawhide”) to spaghetti-western star, as his character's life ultimately interwines with his neighbors on Il Cielo Drive in the hills above Sunset Blvd.and, ultimately, the intruding members of the Manson family. Brad Pitt is absolutely superb in his role as the friend of and stunt man for the DiCaprio TV western star.

Having lived and been part of the early days of TV as well as the Tate-LaBianca killings, the film is really a trip along nostalgia lane as the viewer is once again reminded of the many landmarks in Los Angeles in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Perhaps this is why those who have no familiarity with the city or the time in which the film takes place found it less enjoyable to watch. All that being said, this is a movie about Hollywood and those who earned their livelihood in it aided by excellent performances from its to two leading men and a host of major stars in cameo appearances. I give the film a 9 for, despite its almost 3 hours in length, for me, at least, it was a worthwhile and positive theatrical experience.

Every movie is so entirely different in plot, sets, and time periods yet so entirely the same at the DNA (talkies with some hyper violence). That’s QT style. He builds historically detailed intricate worlds that top flight actors flock too to give performances of their careers. If you are the kind of person who only cares about story, "Once upon a time" might not be for you. QT likes to take a movie and mash it up with another genre. Take for instance Magnificent Eight is a western who-dun-it Canterbury tale. Inglorious Basturds is about WWII and the love of cinema. lol. "Once upon a time" is a fairy tale of living in 1960s california and the 1960s movie making business. It just so happens to also be about the Manson murders. Pitt and DiCaprio were amazing. I'm a fan of Margot Robbies performance -- its all visual. This movie felt like 1969! You can tell the actors loved being in this movie. PS: "Once upon a Time" in the title is part Sergio Leone spaghetti western and part Brothers Grimm w/ the twisted Manson ending. Expand

Short attention spans be damned. This is a movie for real men and women who enjoy doing a little thinking while viewing. If you have any admiration for nostalgia and immersing yourself in a time better than now, this movie is a must see!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The actors really carried the show this time. Amazing dialog as expected. Great performances. It doesn't stand on its own. If you are so in love with hollywood that you ever bothered to read about the horrible acts of the Manson 'family' then its probably a good movie; otherwise, this movie wasn't made for you and just wont make sense. You will wonder things like, why did they waste Margot Robbie on a character whose story doesn't exist in the movie. All the plot of a short film, in a pretentiously long double length movie. Tarantino has jumped the shark.

To be clear, all the actors do an amazing job and the characters are rich and dialoge is amazing. The movie just doesn't stand on its own and make sense on its own. Its an amazing performance, but a bad movie.

The movie was way too long. Very few funny scenes a complete waste of money and time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was BORING! You want to like it because of who's in it and to be honest the acting was good. The storyline sucked! Quentin is trying to hard to be deep and different and leaves you wanting so much more. This should've been great and it only resultwd in confusion and one good last scene ....thats it! Tell the truth people it sucked! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Was very well acted by the two leads, may end up winning Pitt and award. However, the movie itself was just okay. I get re-envisioning things, and the end of the movie was unexpected given the story behind it. I didn't dislike the movie, I did enjoy it, I just expected more. Also two biggest suspenful moments in the movie fell felt. Might be one of those movies that I enjoy much more at home knowing what I'm getting into though. Expand

There are a few editing missteps but they are not super noticeable. Not much negative jumps out for me. Leo and Brad are iconic both together and apart. Tarantino nails the vibe. I was not alive in 1970 and I have never been to Hollywood, but this film does a supreme job of transporting me there. Expand

In a full theatre, we heard people chuckle 3 times during the brutal 2 and half hours. In 22 of going to movies together, my wife (the ever patient one) has never asked to leave a movie before the end... until this dog. We stayed, thinking it had to get better. Boy were we wrong. As we left the theatre, all we heard were people talking about how bad this movie was... No idea how it got the critic rating it did. Expand

The acting is terrific across the board, and as usual, Quentin takes his time to create a world that is nuanced, colorful and fascinating - and you will see no better Bruce Lee moment in film - a masterpiece that will grow in stature over time...don't read anything about the plot - just go see it Expand

Yes and no.To appreciate all its pleasures--this is the rare film that should be seen more than once. Director Quentin Tarantino, the ultimate rule-breaker, is at it again in “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.” A kinder, gentler Tarantino? Yes and no. While the main arc of the film features two mellow buddies driving around Los Angeles, most of this bad-boy director’s trademark violence and revenge is left for the end.

The buddies are TV – and wannabe movie – actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double, Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). DiCaprio and Pitt together are as fine as you can imagine they would be. Pitt is surprisingly willing to play second-fiddle (or so it seems) to DiCaprio.

Good as it is, that buddy bit, male bonding and all, is secondary to the film’s themes. One is the built-in anxiety of the B actor, or of anyone who feels his or her career may be heading south (does that include Tarantino?). Another is the role of the Charles Manson murders in the American psyche. Stitching these two ideas together is another demonstration of Tarantino’s talent.

The heart of the film’s plot is cross-cutting between Dalton in his film-within-a-film; Sharon Tate in the audience of a Westwood theater, watching herself in “The Wrecking Ball,” with Dean Martin; and Booth’s surreal experience at the Spahn Ranch where the Manson cult figures are chillingly menacing (Margaret Qualley [as enticing jail-bait], Lena Dunham and Dakota Fanning play three of the “Manson girls” – and watch for Bruce Dern as ranch owner George Spahn). It takes time for this intersection to develop, and when it does, it’s powerful. The date on the screen is August 8, 1969.

“Once Upon a Time …” is also an ode to Los Angeles, albeit a very different one from 2016’s “La La Land.” There are no loving long-shots of LA, but many close-in, insider references – even to Tarantino’s own 35 mm theater, now known as “The New Beverly,” described here as a porn theater (and perhaps it was in the 1960s). The Spahn Ranch, a movie setting and ranch, where the Manson gang hangs out, was real, as was the movie Tate watches on her last day on earth.
