First half seemed a bit dull and never really go momentum. I don't get all the praise around Pitt in this one I felt as if Margot and Leo both played better roles. It was really well shot as all classic Tarantino is, just dragged on a bit. It gets good at the end but is no where near one of his best movies by far. He did a good job with mixing real life with some make believe to put an interesting twist on a real life Manson story. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Another fantastic movie by Tarantino. 2019 is really generous ,because there are many great films. This one isn`t exception. Stunning perfomances, striking plot and screenplay. This film is great ,not as Pulp Fiction ,but i think, that it`s stupid to compare these two films. So,reviews like Pulp Fiction was better must be deleted or not considered for movie rating. Expand

Finest acting my wife and I had EVER seen by Brad Pitt. Very very impressive. Of course, Leonardo was also awesome but you’d expect that from him. This movie was very entertaining. I worried about the ending possibly being a re-enactment of the Charles Manson murders but it was NOT. In fact, although it was a bit gruesome, it was a twist everyone should appreciate. I actually laughed uproariously during this scene. Just deserves for Charlie Manson’s gang. Sharon Tate was unharmed at the end as it should have been with a fairy tale Hollywood ending. A love letter to Sharron Tate. Tarantino’s skills as a director are now complete. Expand

This film is the definition of Meh. As in mediocrity. It's not bad and not good. Indecency is people paying to see this in the cinema. It's best consumed on a pirate streaming website or on a plane as a time-filler.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood: 9th time a charm?

S2S: This weekbefore you Trip Fontaine was able to review the summer blockbuster, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The movie by director Quentin Tarantino. So let’s see what Trip has to say.

Trip Fontaine: Most fairy tales begin with those famous four word: once upon a time. Quentin Tarantino’s 9th film as writer and director, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, alludes to the promise and magical romanticism of those children’s stories. While not necessarily a fairy tale, this film leans into the romanticism of Hollywood and the despair of when the realization of the Hollywood dream begins to slip or is otherwise threatened.

Rick Dalton, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, is an aging television and movie actor in the 1950’s and 60’s, whose career is on a downturn. His confidante, assistant and longtime stunt double is Cliff Booth, played by Brad Pitt. The main plot of Dalton and Booth is a little bit character study of two actors, who must come to terms with the impending end of an era, and a little bit of a buddy dramedy in which each willfully supports the other. The subplot involves a rising starlet, Sharon Tate, played by Margot Robbie. Tarantino firmly sets the main action of the film in 1969, a turning point in American counterculture, which is particularly resonant considering the other characters that are encountered throughout.

For the uninitiated, it may be a good idea to do a quick Google search: Who is Sharon Tate? If you don’t already know a little bit about the actress, it may be helpful in orienting yourself on the time and significance of both Tate and the mysterious hippies Cliff meets. While not strictly necessary for enjoyment of the film, it does add some rich texture to where Tarantino is taking us. There’s some joy, but also impending doom.

At 2 hours and roughly 40 minutes runtime, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood tells its story with a deliberate pace. This runtime is pretty standard for a Tarantino film. It doesn’t feel like there is a wasted moment. The core contrast between Dalton’s downward career trajectory and Tate’s promise of future stardom is enhanced by DiCaprio’s almost manic desperation as Dalton tries to save the parts he is getting and Robbie’s luminous sequence reveling in watching Tate on the big screen. Pitt has never been his Pitt-est than as Cliff – he’s confidant and brash, no nonsense with a sense of humor. There is a hilarious scene between Pitt and Mike Moh, as Bruce Lee, that will be one of the most talked about. It all comes together, so surprisingly, in the last 20 or so minutes that you walk out a bit dazed and giddy. And, if you know the history, it is satisfyingly bittersweet as well.

For Tarantino fans and true Cinephiles, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood is a must see in the movie theaters. Get your tub of popcorn (and other snacks) and settle in for movie stars being movie stars and a film-loving director directing a film about loving films. For the rest, I still suggest seeing this movie in the theaters. Tarantino films are meant to be seen on the big screen.

Thanks Trip for your review, I agree with you completely. The acting are Leo and Brad at their typical best and thus Tarantino also rebounding to his best after the Hateful Eight. There are two points I want to drive home for general moviegoers, aka the non-Tarantino fans or non-Cinephiles. First, general moviegoers, this is honestly a borderline matinee film for you based on the length of the film and because of point number two. Point two is that you if you don’t know who Sharon Tate is, you will be lost in the theater and will overlook the brilliance of the story being told to you to make this a definite big box film. I almost want to say don’t look up who she is until after the film because that just might enhance you intrigue in the movie and make you want to see it again for certain easter eggs.

Long story short, for general moviegoers catch the matinee if anything, but if you know the story of Sharon Tate, then this will be a great film to see in theaters.

The Stream: 2 hours and 40 minutes can be a long time to sit in a theater.

The Big Screen: Tarantino, Leo and Brad are at their best while providing a suspense filled movie with comedic gold.

The Final Bill: Tarantino fans and true Cinephiles, this is a must see in the movie theaters for the great acting and storytelling.

-Trip Fontaine and S2S

And I consider this to be one hell of a bad movie. Not that it's unwatchable. It's just a loooong movie trailer by somebody, who is obsessed with regressive film references. None of the characters in the movie is relatable. Nobody has a motive for doing anything. The whole thing just slurs on and on and on and on. And if you like Brad Pitt, Leonardo diCaprio or Margot Robie, well, maybe then you would have accepted a five hours version.

My favorite Tarantino movie is Jackie Brown, because it had a plot, warm characters, humor and a perfect resolution in the end. "Once upon..." has none of that. It's brilliantly shot and visually works as a Hollywood timepiece. But apart from that, it is just dull.

With an ensemble cast of veterans and relative newcomers, a fantastic soundtrack and great cinematography to boot, Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood is all Show but no substance, a film in which has a running time of just under three hours, has no actual driving narrative hook, protagonist/antagonist conflict or character development/arcs whatsoever, this film is a poorly laced together act by act display, when the film feels like its going to become interesting? it does not. Will we spend enough with any other characters? No.

with the amount of attention this film has procured to be in the running for "Best Picture" for the 2020 Oscars is only on the soul reason of the Director, would i recommend you to watch this film? No, you could however look at this film and find your own point to its creative direction or lack thereof, after Tarantino's last blunder i was hopeful this would be good, i along with many others were let down, i used to be sad he would stop directing films, but nowadays, it feels like i am counting the days until Tarantino is out of Directors Chair.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Man, I'm a big Tarantino fan and this was a stinker! Never mind rewriting history, which was bad enough but how about a bit of rewriting in the script, or some editing? Lumbering, clanking, overwrought and downright weirdly flat. Anyone else writing this script would never have got past the first reader and anyone else directing it would have been excoriated. Leo and Brad were great and seeing all my favorite olde time Hollwdood haunts kinda fun but what was the point? A Hollywood "down memory lane" trip? Those places weren't integral to the plot and just appear for seconds. Casa Vega, El Coyote? Porque?? I can't believe I managed to sit through the whole thing. Really? You're going to rewrite the Manson story so folks under 30 will think this is what actually happened? Ak. Expand

Leo and Brad are fantastic together, we need to see these two do more movies. Margot Robbie should have gotten a nomination for this if it wasnt for Bombshell. And all the little flirts with old movies and stories. If you dont know how the story of Sharon Tate end in real life, you should really google it. So sad. Thanks for this amazing story Quentin. Will the movie plot dazzle you?... no in fact the absence of any meaningful plot is this movies greatest setback so much that I give it a 3, I gave up in the middle of the movie since the movie was slowly moving to what ends up being the shortest and blandest ending I have ever seen on screen, and the action is nothing special.
There is no real sense of danger in this movie except in one moment but that too ends quickly. You will not watch this movie twice that is all I can say for the end.

Especially that of the relationship between Leo and Brad. Pitt finding probably the most hand-in-glove character since Se7en. Great homage to QTs truest love, which is Hollywood, set against the backdrop of Cielo Drive circa 69. - We know how much Tarantino loves to break rules in the best way possible, and he does not fail again on this one. A great sub-tribute to Sharon Tate as well. And why does it seem that these Tarantino films are the only things that really work for Kurt Russell anymore. Either way, great ensemble cast, including Russell, great likenesses to all the old stars. This film is really one of a kind and atypical of Tarantino in the most heartwarming and memorable ways. If you're looking for Kill Bill Vol 1 or Deathproof, you may be knocking on the wrong door. This film has a big heart, even with the usual hyper-violent tendencies. With that said, ONE OF THE BEST OF THE YEAR, and possibly Tarantino's best. An magnum-opus, a love letter, a historical document. It serves so many things. Way to go QT! Expand

However, with all of the awards buzz it's been receiving, I decided to give it a look on DVD, after which I realized my initial reaction was right: Absolute utter garbage, overrated in virtually every respect (except, perhaps, for Leonardo DiCaprio's fine lead performance). What praise is there to be given for two dragged-out hours of boring, tedious, mundane activity, followed by a gratuitously grotesque conclusion that's supposed to be...funny? My only takeaway from this is that Quentin Tarantino may be a master of nostalgia in his authentic re-creation of past pop culture but little else, which, frankly, makes me wonder, "who cares?" This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While this movie has great cast, great scenes and setting of Hollywood in those years and depicts well how an actor's life could be then plus can feel Tarantino vibes, this movie still is quite weak plot wise - most of the movie nothing really happens just shows random stuff. Yes you can say it shows how it is for actor to do his work, but overall there are too many filler shots of like Brad Pitt randomly driving around etc. The most interesting topic about Manson murders etc is covered only a bit. Basically the last half hour is really great but the rest is lacking. One of the worst Tarantino movies for me and I like all of his movies. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted this film to be a masterpiece. I expected it to be. An hour and 15 minutes into this overly hyped pile of crap, I did something I had never done before in a theater. I looked at my watch. It goes nowhere . There is NO personal connection with any of these characters. And why should there be... a washed up vain, self-centered lead character(played by L.D.) and his very odd relationship with his stuntman(played by B.P.) Ms. Robbie play an a bit movie actress named Sharon Tate(shouldn't have to spoil this one). And WTF is up with Q.T.'s obsession with bare feet. Prominently on display more than ever . The least he could have done is have the actress wash her feet. Instead ... BAM...dirty toejam is trusted right in your face. All in all , I give it a 3 , with B.P.,,'s performance elevating it from a 1. Be warned...Its 2 1/2 hours of ho-hum boredom until the last 15 minutes. Expand

It's an alright buddy comedy movie, an above average one but for Quentin, it's not very good. The movie focuses mainly on the friendship between Rick and Cliff (DiCaprio and Pitt). The friendship though felt awkward and kind of unnatural, Cliff was nothing more than Rick's unpaid chaperone while also being his personal stuntman. Their relationship seemed forced and just as a side effect of their jobs (and plot), not because they really liked each other. It spoilt my immersion into their scenes together and my interest in them as characters. When they aren't together but doing things alone the movie is better and the funny scenarios they get caught up in are amusing but not hilarious moments like in Inglorious and Pulp Fiction. I chuckled a lot but hardly laughed out loud. The big finale is more wtf and exciting than a belly laugh. The dialogue in sharp and gets your attention with wit but the story doesn't really go anywhere. I get Tarantino likes to break up his movies making them non-linear but ultimately every scene compliments the narrative and builds up to a logical conclusion. However, Once Upon... is just a collection of unique moments which our protagonists find themselves in, which although reasonably enjoyable, don't add barely anything to the narrative for much of the runtime. The last third of the movie is much better and meaningful which just is a bit frustrating because if the film was more cohesive like the final third, I personally would have liked it a lot more than i did. Ricks journey gets interesting 90 minutes in and Cliff gets a worthwhile plot. The finale is entertaining but the ending is a let down, it's like they go through a big event and just forget about it like nothing happened, The End. The movie wastes a lot of time on Sharon (Robbie) whose scenes are dull and just feel like filler. They don't go anywhere and eventually here character is just forgotten about. It felt like a tribute to the real Sharon Tate which is probably the case if you know what happened to her in 1969 but apart from being a tribute and a nod to the past, her scenes just feel unnecessary. This movie had real potential and just fell flat, all the cool 1960's Hollywood back drop and nostalgia wasted for a mediocre comedy. I think Tarantino films are more about imagery, quirky characters and honouring classic movies than about telling a gripping story and grabbing your attention these days. Expand

All style over substance and you are just waiting for a plot twist or just anything interesting to happen. I usually love his work but I’m left a little shocked at what a non event this movie is. If you want a documentary of life around this time then you’ll be satisfied with the indulgent subject matter, but if you’re expecting another great entry into Tarantino’s filmography prepare yourself for disappointment. The reason for this failure? I think it was the Manson family plot line that probably seemed a great idea to frame the narrative early in the writing process, but just ended up literally sending the director up a creative cul-de-sac. Tarantino is brilliant for making this movie and opened my eyes to a time period and vibe I haven't seen until now. All the dialogue from the two main characters is what makes this movie what it is, Leo and Brad bring their A game. Even when they are talking about something that may seem to make no sense in relation to the story, the dialogue finds a way to be relevant within the story and progress the characters. Al Pacino was also amazing in his role even through I liked his role in The Irishman a bit more. The ending seals the deal for why I love this movie and all the craziness it entails. I am glad I saw this movie and I only regret not seeing it in the theater. Expand

Quentin Tarantino is “fantastic” writer and director

He managed to make the worst movie I have ever watched, although there was a fantastic crew of actors. Well done.
This movie is the best indicator that metacritic was sold and no longer represents a competent judgement when you are looking for the film ratings.
If you can, check out the film by yourself and you'll be clear.
Many companies have thought they were irreplaceable, but they don't exist any more. If metacritic continues like this, the same future awaits them.
There are many more viewers than directors, writers and producers.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Positives:
1. The cinematography-- classic Tarantino. If you're a big fan of his previous works, you'll definitely like how he handled the cinematography.
2. The acting, particularly DiCaprio's. In my opinion, he'll be nominated for another Oscar for this role.
3. The music. Make no mistake, the music used for this movie could not be any better. 60's vibes all the way.
4. The writing. Especially the script. The story was a bit dragging, but the script adds color to every scene, no matter who's dialogue it is.

Negatives:
1. Length. The movie is quite long and it could be dragging sometimes, especially in some scenes. Not all, but some. Some scenes are quite unnecessary, and only adds to the length, not the story. 2. Brad Pitt was not well-utilized for my liking. Sure, he had his moments in this film, particularly during the climax part, but not enough.

Tarentino has long been a hack but this film highlights just how far he has fallen from his Reservoir Dogs days. The first half is boring, the back half is just utter comical goofiness that has never been funny.

About the ONLY good thing about the whole thing is his depiction of Bruce Lee which is by far the most accurate thing in the film.

Its hard to fault the actors for this one because the performances from the cast were mostly solid across the board. They simply could not hold together one of Tarantino lamest visions for a film to date. The whole production would have been at least a 7, but the writing from plot to dialog was so weak it easily drug it down to a 3. By far the worst film Tarentino has put his name on so far and clear illustration its long past time for him to pack it in.

We are treated to a delicious timepiece so rich in details and excitement, the story goes back to the golden days of Hollywood when actors were idols in every sense of the word, the story itself goes down different paths that all link up at the end in a spectacular manner worthy of the Tarantino's violent ways, and boy was it fun to watch. The two leads, Decaprio and Pitt bring unparalleled charisma to the table, I'll tell you this, it is almost impossible to take your eyes off the screen when they're on, they just possess enough to grip you throughout the film, they capture the true old Hollywood charm so perfectly.

In all honesty, I truly believe that this film wasn't meant to be explained but rather enjoyed and I did just that, Tarantino with a twist but I like it.

I guess the whole point of the movie (besides violence) is exacting revenge upon the Manson family and sticking it to them. That's fine, but I have no strong feelings about the whole affair. It all happened before I was born, far away, and to people I have never heard of. I just don't care, and Tarantino failed to make me care. If you can look beyond that you're gonna have a great time, because as usual the acting is incredible, the dialogue is natural as it is well writen and in the end, specially if you know the real story, the ending will let you go out of the theather with a good vibe. Making one film as good as those is extremely difficult; following it up is even tougher. That being said, this one is definitely one of the weaker in Tarantino’s filmography, despite a gorgeous look and two very good performances from its lead actors.
I think what ultimately kills this film is the aimlessness of its dialogue. This is Tarantino style dialogue, to be sure, but it isn’t quite Tarantino substance. Whereas in his other films, the dialogue is wandering and seemingly pointless at times, there was always a purpose behind every word. I don’t feel he was able to capture that cohesiveness that his other films managed to obtain. It’s not a terribly made movie, not at all. It just isn’t great.

Quentin's best film and yet (relatively) his most wholesome one too. A comfy slice of life tale about two friends just trying to break into the industry and find redemption. It's movie fun for movie lovers. The biggest downside would be its length. There is a lot of plot, and the story keeps going on and on. I think concentrating for so long can be tiring, since this isn't a mindless film you barely focus on.

I guess for Tarantino lovers, the lack of gratuitous violence (in most of the film) might be a disappointment. I just enjoyed it for what it is, the clever writing, the clever dialog, the ever-so-human characters and their weaknesses (except for creepy 40 year old in an 8 year old body.)
Perfect? Nope. Ground-breaking? Nope. Several hours of joy for movie lovers? Yes.

Very disappointing. DiCaprio and Pitt gave great performances, that is the only thing good about this film. The ending was silly and I thought very disrespectful to the death of Sharon Tate. The setting, the mystique and glamour of 1960's Hollywood is VERY well portrayed. I got lost in the fact that this was a movie about something and just awed myself being transported back in time. The movie has incredible slow-burn humor and the final 20 minutes of the film is absolutely bonkers - as it should be with Tarantino. Great film to sit back and relax at, enjoy a simpler time (everyone chain-smoking was my favorite), and watch a film maker's film with a little twist on the Manson family. Expand

100% PROOF that Tarantino is a PRETENTIOUS, self indulgent HACK. Its overly LONG, agonizingly SLOW with a completely UNNECESSARY second act. Pitt is MASTERFUL and the ending is simply FANTASTIC, that's where 2 points come in.

The weakest Tarantino movie is still a good movie but it had too many weeknesses.
