This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. With only a few captivating scenes, everything else is a bore. It has been a month since I've seen it, and only 3 scenes is memorable: 1. Cliff (Brad Pitt) fighting Bruce Lee, 2. Cliff beating up a Manson Family member for puncturing his tyre, and 3. The final scene where Pitt trips on acid and beats up the Manson Family members in Rick's (Leonardo DiCaprio) house, effectively cancelling the Tate murders. Everything else in the movie is just conversations after conversations that I couldn't appreciate and even link to anything besides understanding that Rick's a washed out sad sack of sh*t actor, Cliff's a loyal lapdog who probably killed his wife, and Sharon's dancing/vanity. All actors acted well, but Margot's Sharon Tate was the most useless--only being a dancing bimbo. DiCaprio's a washed out actor who keeps getting mad and sad at himself, and Pitt's his loyal stunt man. Of all three, only Pitt scenes gives more entertainment as compared to the constant rant and conversations with (all) other characters in the film. The conversations also are extremely boring and a chore to watch and listen as they serve no purpose whatsoever. Or I might be born too late to actually live through and understand this cinema age and lifestyle of the celebs shown in this film--whatever it is, it's a bore. Heck, even the final scene where Cliff (Pitt) defends Rick's (DiCaprio) house was a tad dark and unable to really see the violent and gruesome effects--which is what Tarantino's films is all about. Only the final scene here has that signature scene of Tarantino, and even that's not delivered at it's best to fully appreciate. It's just a grind. You can literally skip most, if not all scenes/conversations in this film and still watch through it not missing anything out. Watching through it all--I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. Expand

It’s certainly the most wistful, almost melancholy, of his films, even if it does manage to fit in a bit of trademark ultra violence that feels jarring and perhaps even overly vicious, even by Tarantino standards. Great leading performances and wonderful chemistry between Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt elevate Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, creating a thoughtful, tantalizing glimpse at the Hollywood of yesteryear and what might have been. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Once Upon a Time is top form Tarantino. Still in our opening weekend, I’ll put up the big spoiler warning for this one right now so that we can talk more openly about the film after the jump. There was some controversy about whether showing his film at Cannes would ruin the twist for future movie goers, which apparently led Friend to investigate and make the friendship-ending decision to share his newfound spoiler with Wife and me before leaving for his European vacation. Since then, we’ve been picking up the pieces and trying not to think too hard about what circle of hell he’s destined for. But if you’re reading this far down, you are aware that we’re looking at an alternate history story in a similar vein to Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds, but also strangely enough with an indie film, Yesterday, currently enjoying some love.

The film is structured neatly into two parts with a decisive and unexpected time break. Tarantino is enamored with recreating genre television of the 1960s, whether it’s the cowboy Westerns that are Rick Dalton’s main fare or cheesy celebrity cameo commercials, FBI action adventures, or World War II nostalgia. Tarantino’s talent for blurring the lines between the real and the cinematic is at work, ambient music gives unexpected flavor to some of the most tense scenes of both halves of the film.

Little details like the length of Cliff’s drive to his trailer in the sub-suburbs of LA or the little moment of Cliff’s polite decline to pick up the hitchhiking hippies on their second meeting do wonders in fleshing out a friendship with weight and deep loyalty. Both Cliff and Rick are given the requisite nice guy scene with a young child or a cute animal in order to solidify their status as top notch goodies. Likewise, Tarantino’s villains are given a long runway from which to take off: they are equal parts alluring, enigmatic, grotesque, clownish, and damaged. On that last note, Once Upon a Time is stuffed with veiled critiques of Hollywood, wrestling with the unpleasantness of historical facts coupled with contemporary morality.

Tarantino feels to me like someone who has escaped for the most part the baggage of past associations of Harvey Weinstein despite some potential landmines, like the pressure Uma Thurman felt to do dangerous stunts on his set while being manhandled by a powerful executive producer. Thurman’s daughter, Maya Hawke continues a storied partnership between the director and the Thurman into a new generation and seems to validate Tarantino’s character. Tarantino’s other films have always struck me as interesting because of their tendency to elevate strong, fully-considered female protagonists and antagonists. Once Upon a Time has lots of roles for actresses in the springs, summers, and autumns of their careers. Even if the film is a bit of a bromance, it finds ways to tell other stories in the process: Sharon Tate’s storyline is obviously given a lot of attention and Tarantino deals with blending footage from her work with Margot Robbie’s smart, quirky, and apt depiction.

Dana Stevens over at Slate has taken a stab at trying to draw some comparisons to Tarantino’s previous work in a glowing and funny review, but I think I’ll need a second viewing before I have more decisive opinions.

UPDATE (Aug 5): I’ve been reading a lot more about OUATIH and ended up seeing it again by myself on Friday after starting a new job last week. Joelle Monique and Sam Adams have dueling essays about the gendered subjectivity of Tarantinian violence that’ll keep your mind going for a bit. Monique convinced me that I would absolutely hate Jackie Brown and then when I offhandedly mentioned the article and that film as the epitome of Tarantino’s callous fridging of female characters, a friend of mine wrinkled his brow and said it was a classic, which made me think I better go and see it for myself. THR had two takes that I noticed: Richard Newby did a nice close read of the film and its influences and Ciara Wardlow kind of split the difference between Monique and Adams in the feminist debate while placing the film in the context of the amazing trailers that preceded the movie by women directors and directors of color (“Harriet, Jojo Rabbit, Queen & Slim, and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood“). To that list, I add the ones that rounded out my second viewing: Knives Out, King’s Man, and Charlie’s Angels’ reboot. Alison Willmore is doing God’s work at Buzzfeed with a diachronic look at women in Tarantino films.

Tarantino's direction is as one would expect from a director of his caliber, and his flair is evident throughout the film. The set design is stupendous and the details that Tarantino focuses on are ridiculously well crafted and thought out. This film's soundtrack is equally as mesmerizing and adds to the experience as a whole. While not for everyone, this movie is a well-written and acted love letter to the 60s that needs to be experienced at least once. Expand

Tal vez si o tal vez no.

TheA difficult movie to rate; Tarantino made a movie which is very characteristic for his style of filming. The shots and scenes are great, the characters give a great perfomance and Tarantino's magic touches show throughout the story. The problem is that it feels like Tarantino is pursuing two story lines, making neither feel complete; and this in a rather long movie. Because of these story lines, there are some amazing scenes which seem redundant to the story in the end. My feeling after watching the movie: "This is some crazy sh*t", but not necessarily because it was that good, but because the movie felt a bit crazy and therefore in the end has difficulties to truly shine.
Conclusion; some great filming, but it feels like Tarantino didn't really know how to create one complete enticing plot line.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was my first Tarantino movie and it was a pretty bad first impression, but we will get to that.
First for what I liked: Rick Dalton. Rick is a very charming and entertaining character. He is the only character in the movie that goes thought a satisfactory character arc and who affects the story with his actions, he has a lot of touching and funny moments, seeing him evolve filled me with joy and pride. Most of the other characters have their moments but he is in my opinion the one who shines the brightest.
This movie is full of art and charm, there's a lot of funny scenes that seem pretty genuine. It has a very unique storytelling and an artistic portrayal of life. If it was for the characterization, soundtrack and art direction alone this would be an excellent movie, but that's not all that movies are for me.
This leads us to the things I didn't enjoy: mainly the plot and character progression. I found the plot difficult to follow, and it feels like it goes nowhere. Most characters are static and have 0 reason to be there. They take long chunks of the movie to present them to you for them to do absolutely nothing of importance. A lot of scenes are meaningless and are not even entertaining, they seem to serve no purpose. Even for some of the protagonists, it feels like none of their actions has any weight in the story. This ends up meaning we have a long, long movie where roughly 50% of it is enjoyable. It truly drags for way too long (it didn't need to be a 2 hours and a half) and most plot threads have no satisfying conclusions.
Then theres the violence: Despite this being my first Tarantino movie I knew he was famous for his bloody fight scenes, so I was looking foward to that, and the scenes are there, but when the film gets to finally be violent, it feels nonsensical, brutal and unearned. Theres a fight scene at the end that I think was supposed to be "cool" and funny since my friend and the rest of the cinema were laughing pretty hard, but for me it was weirdly disgusting, and not visually but conceptually. They seemed like violence for the sake of it, nothing to justify it, nothing in line, nothing to enjoy.
I guess I was supposed to like the other protagonist, Cliff Booth, and think he was cool, but the most we get to know about him the most I disliked him. He goes from a pretty funny, loving guy to a violent smug **** then we learn that's what he always was. When he got into fights I catched myself always rooting for the other side to win, and I don't believe those were Tarantino's intentions.
In conclusion, my guess is that this movie is for Tarantino fans, those people who already consider him a genious and a visionary and therefore can analize every little scene looking for hidden meaning and symbolism. For me it was a way too long movie that was only half entertaining, with half of the scenes being meaningful, half of the characters serving any purpose and half of the protagonists being likeable at all.
And also, it should have been half as long.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Birds Of Prey doesn’t really look that great, and to put it before Hollywood was such a weird choice… Anyway! SPOILER WARNING FOR THE WHOLE REVIEW.

Time for a GHOST STORY (not really, sounded cool tho). As I had the pleasure of watching Tarantino’s latest,Once Upon A Time In Hollywood,in IMAX,every second was slowly graduating to the monster of Tarantino’s Feet Obsession crawling up our sleeves to ensure we had the creepiest time of our lives...In IMAX with a movie aiming for 1969 craze.
But all jokes aside, this may be the most insane movie of 2019 for a myriad of reasons, mainly for the fact that this weekend I’ve seen movies with such unexpected endings. This one checking every box it set in its 1st and 2nd Act,and still ending it with a huge smile on my face. Tarantino’s look of 1969 Los Angeles is stylish,on-beat and breathes of such campiness and dirt-ass-ery...whatever it is.
What’s even greater is that this can also be interpreted as a love letter to Western Movies, since several sequences we see Rick Dalton (played by DiCaprio) acting in a scene the crew’s filming and still feeling like we’re in a Western, even if we know it’s a scene they’re filming.
And so much more - the Soundtrack rocks, the Villains work...for the brief seconds they’re in (even if it’s unrealistic to see a group of hippies plan a murder for 6 Months, right after Cliff Booth, played by Pitt, kicked that guy’s ass),the acting rocks, the Bruce Lee cameo kicks so many asses and the fact that they reference Italian Cinema as a terrible, really bad genre (even if it’s mentioned for just Westerns) speaks so many volumes with the garbage quality movies thrown into our cineplexes every second (rarely we get a La Vita è Bella or Lucio Fulci in here) and I don’t know why,but I love that Sony,of all things,is also part of the story (it’s mentioned with Screen Gems, and we see Rick outside Columbia Pictures at one scene).
It also helped that I saw some Swinging Sixties this week,as you can smell some of that inspiration in here (or,at least,in checkbox mode) - Having Fun seeing a guy go somewhere with an unexpected ending (Easy Rider),a nice little day in Los Angeles without a big saving the world plot and, instead,a small plot about a guy still trying to achieve the impossible (Model Shop) - You know where I’m going with this. Never for a single second did I get bored or laugh twice, since the movie was that enthralling…..Whenever it was Rick Dalton trying to get his fame back together or Cliff Booth doing crazy **** to the hippies,or any shot that featured bare feet.
I didn’t have any problem with Sharon Tate’s (played by Robbie) arc,but I still felt like you could’ve easily removed it,since the rest still feels glued together (but oh no,we have to connect it to the last seconds, when she and Rick finally meet),and again, the hippies as the villain feel outlandish and out-of-place. Yea,even if it means seeing Harley Quinn Smith (alongside other hippies) screaming **** at Brad Pitt for kicking that guy’s ass.
But yo. That’s literally what’s wrong with it. So,I finally saw it,and I feel like I’m the last reviewer of the Instagram Movie Community to see it. Kinda like a quest, where everyone already did it,but you’re still thriving to achieve it. I really wanted this to end my Summer, and with the style and substances (and he amount of feet) it carried,I feel like this could’ve ended my summer in style. I’m so glad that the great movie from Sony this year is this one,and I can’t wait to see Tarantino’s next (and, sadly, final) outing as a Director. Even if you saw 2 movies like these, you can still tell dude’s got some talent in his pockets!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Long, bloated and lacking in a compelling, cohesive plot. Lots of scenes don't really drive the narrative at all. Two stinkers in a row for Tarantino now. The climax at the end couldn't even save it for me. I was hoping they'd save Tate in her own residence, that would have been more cathartic for the audience and made more sense. If real history had been unfolding and through a minor twist of events Brad Pitt wanders over there tripping out and saves the day. Then Bruce Lee could have shown up as Mansen's new recruit, like a boss, and finished his fight with Pitt. Why not, it's all make believe anyway. Great acting from everyone involved though. Expand

It's easy not to fully understand this move. It's slow and really revolves around characters personality more then story. But, it' simply perfect as it is. And last scene, is simply epic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A total disappointment for a QT fan...

The movie has a VERY thin plot. Margot's story arc (if you can call it that) didn't advance or contribute to the plot in any way and could easily be left out. The same goes for the most of Brad's, although his character has one or two scenes which contribute to the overal narrative. The most interesting was the story of the aging actor played by leo. In between you see a lot of filler material nodding to the hollywood of the 60's, which in of itself are setting the tone for the movie, but they happen way too often and are incredibly lengthy. I am talking about 10 - 15 minutes here.

Aside from Leo's character, none of the characters develop in any way. The actions taking place in their lives have no significant impact on them whatsoever. For example, Margot is just there to be pretty, parties in every scene and barely has 10 lines of text. Brad is just driving around in his car beating up people. He supposedly killed his wife and got away with it, but apart from a small flashback, where you don't even see the murder!, it is not explained how this has affected him. A huge missed opportunity in my opinion. It could have given his character way more depth. As stated above, the exception is leo and his portayal of Rick Dalton. Rick ´s undergoes some significant chances throughout the movie which affect his actions. The acting by Leo and Brad ist excellent, but these professionals alone can't save these poorly written characters. The dialogues are good as always, but it all seems so meaningless.

And so, the movie drags on and on for about 2 hours and 15 minutes until finally QT decides it is time for his signature filmmaking and storytelling. However! When things finally do get violent it feels extremely out of place considering the rest of the movie and the final scene with the three goons from the manson family is laughable and an extreme mess.

All in all it didn't like this movie and can't recommend it to anyone. While Leo and Brad's acting was very good, the weak character building and plot in combination with the overly long filler material made me want to leave halfway through. I somehow managed to stick around, but at the end of the movie I wish that I had not. It was a total waste of time and money.

Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood is one thing and one thing only; Quentin Tarantino’s beautifully crafted dreamy love letter to cinema!

With his newest feature, the current master of cinema’s vision reminds us why movies are cool again. For the first time, in a long time, there’s a film that begs to be seen, not in the comfort of your own home, not on your Netflix cue on an airplane, but in front of a silver screen, with an audience and you damn right…some popcorn. Once Upon A Time is less a film and more an experience; one where the bustling hot summer days are corrected by the high intensity air conditioning of the multiplexes; one where the theatres are a safe haven for summer love and first kisses, an experience where going to the movies is as magical as popping your cherry. That’s what a Tarantino film is like; just like when I first went to go see his Grindhouse experience for the first time, Tarantino is a visionary old soul, hell bent on sharing his memorable cinematic experiences of his past, with us today. If you are a cinephile and don’t know about Quentin Tarantino’s work, most, if not all people will tell you that you should just quit now, but I digress. Tarantino worked at a blockbuster in Hollywood, California in his early years, consuming as much cinema as possible. One of his most revered quotes to date about film is his famous line that “When people asked me if I went to film school I tell them no. I went to films”. Funny enough, this quote captures the essence of Tarantino and his canon; an individual who entered the world of cinema out of the sheer love of watching films, just like myself.

As an artist myself and lover of film, I never went to film school also. Hopefully, as someone who would eventually love to make their own films one day, I feel that this is one of the many reasons why I admire, as well as, so heavily identify with Tarantino. I also learned about films by watching them. Just like myself, the influence in Tarantino films is wide ranging. His largest inspirations draws from the New Wave Gangster pictures of France, crafted by the likes of Jean Pierre Melville, Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard. All of the names listed are absolute giants in celluloid and contributed in my opinion the most to modern cinema that features, as Godard would say, “A girl and a gun”. According to Godard, that is pretty much all that is necessary to making a good motion picture. Other notable Influences on Tarantino would be essentially any film from the 1970’s because that is the era when he began to understand and study cinema, an era of films by Don Siegel, Sergio Leone and George Roy Hill.

Yet while many are quick to label QT as a scam artist and artistic thief, I feel like it is my duty to rectify that notion. Before continuing on, it has to be said that art copies art, inspiration inspires and according to Mark Twain, there is no such thing as originality, only levels of authenticity. Therefore, it is my extreme pleasure to introduce and name QT a master of authenticity for his cinema. Just like when Sergio Leone remade a Kurosawa picture and developed it into the Dollars trilogy, or when Christopher Nolan gave his interpretation of the Dark Knight recently, or when Martin Scorsese won his first Oscar for remaking a Japanese film and later naming it The Departed, art is not our subject, WE are its subject. Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood is the iconic director’s masterful indulgence in everything that he loves about movies and everything we should love, too! Aside from Taratino, Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood isn’t just one man’s magnum opus, but a collection of so many talented artists, starting with its cast. The film opens with Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt going for a cruise to a watering hole. Dicaprio stars as Rick Dalton, a good ole’ boy from Missouri who drinks for hydration and smokes for oxygen. Once the leading man in television and film, appearing in western serials, one aptly titled Bounty Law, Dalton is on the tail end of his acting career. The Midwestern-American cowboy style Dalton knew all too well, is being suffocated and changed, no thanks to the foreign influenced, free-loving hippie movement. While DiCaprio’s Dalton emits a certain swagger that charms many, the audience comes to realize that this ‘swagger’ is less a personality trait and more a clearly stubborn, unchangeable style and resilience to the conforming of the times around him. According to Rick, Rick Dalton is still big; it’s the pictures that just got small. While it may be hard to argue this notion, DiCaprio’s riotous as the comedic force of the film. Blending well with Tarantino’s signature writing style for a second time, DiCaprio’s Dalton stutters, stammers and then collectively pulls himself together in front of a camera.

This is a really fun film. There are abundant references to TV shows from the late 50s through the 60s, both U.S. and foreign films of the era and another history redux. There are some things that are fun or clever that do not make a great deal of sense. The attention to detail in making Hollywood look like it did in the 60s is great. Both Pitt and DeCaprio are well suited to their roles. DeCaprio, in particular, seems to be tangentially parodying his own career. There are different moments that are funny, sweet, insightful, silly and ultra violent. The violence, particularly against women, unfortunately ebbs towards misogyny. But, at the end, this 60s Hollywood tale is a great deal of fun. Expand

I think not, but does it capture everything Tarantino was going for , Yes it does, I really liked this film, i think it's very similar to Tarantino's Jackie Brown in nature and structure. it's a movie about friendship and it's very funny i didn't expect that from this movie but it worked pretty well and thats also because of how Leo and Pitt nailed their roles, you can see DiCaprio's emotional breakdown and feel it, and he was great and really owned this character, as for Brad Pitt i can say it's my favorite character from this film , he pretty much has the best lines and the best scenes, Margot Robbie as Sharon tate, even if she was not given the biggest part in this movie, but she did good the movie is filled with long scenes that gave an advantage to the actors to really shine, the production design is Phenomenal, you can feel the 60's vibes, the sets and the Hollwood Boulevard are beautifull, the movie it's not about one think, its feels like a collection of moments beautifully directed and very well written and thats exactly what i think of this movie and thats what i liked about it, things i had an issue with is the second act, sometimes a scene could've been shorten but they took a little bit long and sometimes the narrative loses itself but it fixes itself the next scene,i really loved the first and third act, they are GREAT, my major problems is within the second Act that lacks a bit of tension, if you like Tarantino's style of directing and cinematic movie that relies on characters and the performances you're gonna probably enjoy this film. While working towards the Infamous climax, we are introduced to Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth who struggle to stay relevant in the Hollywood business. What is initially a story about Rick Dalton's declining career, becomes an ominous tale that leads to the gruesome murder of Sharon Tate... Or does it? During the first two hours, characters are build and put into perspective to make the audience have a connection with them. This is all tied to known stars and Hollywood figures of 1969, making for some very fun and tense scenes. Unfortunately, the viewer is left wondering for a very long time where it will go until the ranch is visited by Cliff Booth, with little extraordinary excitement during the first two hours.

Finally, during the climax of the movie things get exciting and tense. In typical Tarantino fashion, stuff gets crazy. While the ending is very satisfying, it will take a long time of watching lesser scenes that are really only there to make the viewer care about the characters. The movie dwells on the border of being entertaining, and succeeding only barely. It is a good movie, but i don't think anyone will watch it a second time in comparison to other Tarantino movies. I give it a 7/10.

I've been seeing people complaining about a thin plot or complaining about a very small involvement of Manson in the movie.
This movie has a great plot but if you go and watch this movie with just Manson murders around your mind, you are going to be disappointed.
This movie is not about Sharon Tate, Jay Sebring, and Charles Manson.
This movie is about Rick F*cking Dalton, Cliff Booth, Hollywood in 60s and hippies.
The plot is all about Rick and Cliff and everchanging Hollywood and struggles to keep put in Hollywood.
Questions about Margot's role in movies have risen a lot but this movie is still incomplete without her.
Her role is meant for the ending and not for the rest of the movie.
Again!! This movie is not about Manson Murders. So please get over it and enjoy a beautiful depiction of the Hollywood in 60s.

Sincera e interesante sin ser necesariamente entretenida. "Once Upon A Time...

Sincere and interesting without being necessarily entertaining. "Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood" it is a thankful exercise of authenticity in times of abusive melancholy.
The cast, which is big and respects the work of Tarantino, fairly recreates a background full of influential profiles in the world of Hollywood films. That's how we'll follow the moments of Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth (interpreted by Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt) which are the neighbors of Sharon Tate, Roman Polanski and Jay Sebring (Margot Robbie, Rafał Zawierucha and Emile Hirsch) in Hollywood at the end of the 60s. The most relevant of the plot is the observation dynamic and professional exercise that exists behind and onwards the cameras that travel along with the characters and people of that historic city. On that trip, it can be appreciated and admired the scenery and costume work because the visual elements not only represent the memories of the young Tarantino but, at the given time, exploits even if it’s just for a brief moment.
Tarantino renews the narrative formula that distinguishes his movies without taking away his cinematographic style and, at the same time, the story expresses situations that allude to personal inspirations. Overall, the film is an essay about the personality vs character game of a person that lives and works in a spectacular studio as Hollywood is. Thus, in the first two acts, he is patient, detailed and with a heavy sensibility, and in the third act, we see the old and trustful Tarantino whose famous intensity is uncontainable. However, even though you can feel the vanity and the daring of Tarantino’s direction, its success is thanks to the real context of its presentation. Nowadays there's no respect for originality, however, as personal and nostalgic the movie is, Tarantino knows that there's no point in creating without honoring his own vision.

So to fully grasp the intentions of the piece, one must consider that it was made by an iconic filmmaker as interested in looking back as he is in focusing on the future.

The central story focuses on Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), a fading leading man now reduced to being the “heavy” in the prominent TV shows of the day, meaning that he’ll always be killed off at the end of the episode. Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) is his stunt double and best friend, helping to smooth Rick’s gradual descent. Along the way, a variety of characters are introduced: Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) and Roman Polanski, Steve McQueen (Damian Lewis), George Spahn (Bruce Dern) who rented his ranch to the movie industry to shoot westerns (it was the location for the TV show “Bonanza” for 14 years), even relatively unknown producer Marvin Schwarz (Al Pacino) who gives Dalton some well-intended career advice. The list of credits and uncredited roles in this film is nearly endless. Tarantino takes full advantage of this embarrassment of riches.

In many ways, “Once Upon a Time…” is Tarantino’s homage to the Hollywood of 1969. Significantly, it’s a Hollywood created primarily from his imagination (Tarantino was 6 years old at the time.) To accomplish this retrospective, Tarantino takes on some of the key events of ’69 - portraying some quite literally, while radically reinterpreting others. From my perspective, Tarantino is suggesting not only the power of movies, but also its subversive possibilities. Particularly with his interpretation of the final scene of the film, Tarantino appears to be suggesting that movies have the ability to rewrite history. He may even be suggesting that when there is a discrepancy between “facts” and Hollywood’s version of events, it’s the film version that the public will remember.

Sometimes, this theme is developed with gentle kindness. There is a touching scene where Sharon Tate attends an afternoon matinee of “The Wrecking Crew,” a film in which she co-starred. Unrecognized by other members of the audience, Tate glories in seeing herself on the screen, her face reflecting unalloyed joy when others in the audience laugh and respond favorably to her on-screen character.

Rest assured, or be forewarned, Tarantino’s tendency toward hyper-violence has not waned. In fact, the carnage toward the end of the film is even more shocking because of the relatively tame preceding events.

With a running time of 2 hours 45 minutes, Tarantino clearly has a lot to say. But this is a storyteller at the top of his game. For this moviegoer, it was an investment of time that paid rich dividends.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is filled with great performances, great dialogue and humor and great directing. This is a really entertaining movie. It's so fun to watch and mostly thanks to the writing and performances. One of its weakest aspects are the characters. Margot Robbie's character, for example, was really weak and underdeveloped, despite being featured in all the promotional material and posters. The rest of the characters, with a few exceptions, were basically the same. The pacing is alright, it never feels too fast nor too slow, it was okay. The cinematography is really good. Technically speaking, this movie was great. Easily one of the best movies of the year and I highly recommend it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Although "Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood" imbues an inchoate aura, it does - however - succeed in its depiction of the antiquated beauty of cinema during the 1960's. It's redolent presentation of this era also contains outstanding cinematography, with DiCaprio's visage and bravura of "Rick Dalton", who is meticulous in his representation of the character's impediment. As for Pitt's "Cliff", the character offers an insight into the adroit of a stuntman - whilst also elucidating Cliff's ingrained intonation, which ultimately coalesces Rick Dalton's act. Forbye, DiCaprio and Pitt out-perform one another, whilst Margot Robbie further augments this idyllic image of retro Hollywood; irrefutably, this picture is the superior of Tarantino's 9 films, which merely adumbrates his intentions of the 10th and final film he shall direct - will it be his best?

Initial Rating - 8.9/10

The lead actors perform admirably. There are some good moments, especially near the end and it's not gory like most Tarantino flicks and I'm taking that as a plus.

Still, none of that makes this a good movie. It's pretty good, but mostly boring and the only real plus is seeing Leonardo and Brad in action. Without them this would have been a very subpar movie for Tarantino. Nowhere near as good as Inglorious basterds, Django unchained, Reservoir dogs or Pulp fiction.

I would not call it a film , more a fragment puzzled together ,with famous actors, whos acting is amazing but true wasted talent for this film, (this script) we could take a little glimpse into the old westernfilmera,(and the intended humor, which didnt make me laugh though) the hippytime, the spirit of the 60 , ok...but its all mashed up and not making sense for its intended own form...mixed with real Hollywoodera then, but more valuable to watch for filmgoofs and Hollywoodinsiders, before I wrote its a **** movie for me, but as I know how much hard work its to put it all together and to create, I would say, i really really dont like this QT composition of a film :) dissapointing, I couldnt figure out any storyline , nor a plot, nor developing characters, and was this film edited so strong that it lost some valuable scenes?, and you need a looooot of patience for the western scenes, only bearable because of leo, but still, need a hell lot of patience for this sloooowness of the film, (as we are in 3 dimensions living now, maybe I couldnt figure this one out :) ) I loved the costumes and the camera, buut the editing was confusing sometime, aaaand (I must say i liked the end), towards the end as if QT awakened from a long long sleep, we saw his famous signature at last, I liked the idea of changing the past by changing the ending in this film from the real happening ,with the twisted change of the real happened past of then , for none "Insiders" it could be terribly boring, but all in one I must say, If you want to get a nap or to walk outa cinema with a dull , tired dissapointed feeling, go out and watch it, you can earn the money back youve spent for this film, but not your time. Well, i've liked most of Tarantino movies from the past and always enjoyed smart dialog and fun over-the-top scenes. But this last installment is kinda disappointment - it lacks the stuff expected from Tarantino: to be actually entertained. Instead what is offered is 3h journey to the 1969 which was really well done, alas uneventful. Sure there are few Pitt scenes that stand out but those are it - rest of the film is like forced and mandatory 60s commercial. Tarantino brings all his childhood crushes and influences to the screen - Polanski, Bruce Lee, stuntmen, riding cool cars, moviemaking backstories and business, watching movies in cinema etc - lots of bowing to the past glory days. Actors performances are fine but fail against weak story. 4/10 and never watching it again, any of his previous films are far better. Expand

It’s both aimless and yet meaningful with the commentary on the new era in Hollywood. The movie pays tribute to old Hollywood, film making, Sharon Tate, stunt work, and actors. This is perhaps Tarantino’s most personal and mature movie his made, until the last 10 minutes (which I love) goes complete ape sh*t.

I can’t think of any other director where the passion and love for movies is so transparent through Tarantino's craft. He’s such an old school film maker that he and Martin Scorsese are the last golden age directors, as every new release feels like an event. In this movie, Quentin presents 69’ Hollywood at its peak, as he remembers it from his childhood. He manages to rebuild classy LA thanks to the crew and creative team.

There’s a couple of scenes where Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), drives around LA and there are long shots that shows off the environment and it’s amazing the amount of detail and effort went into the setting - with Robert Richardson brilliant Cinematography bringing it all alive.

Leonardo DiCaprio was absolutely excellent as the fading Western star, Rick F**king Dalton. Dalton, a self-centered, yet vulnerable actor that you both laugh and pity. I will often forget about DiCaprio comedic chops, something similar to Ryan Gosling. I also like the subtle stutter that’s sprinkled through out, which is sad when given some thought that it’s something he’s got to deal with. There’s a heartfelt scene where Dalton tells his young co-star about a book his reading and mid way through explaining the story he realises it mirrors his life, and breaks down in tears with me crying with him. Yep, I teared up in a Tarantino movie. Leo was the pulse of the movie.

Brad Pitt was amazing as the deadpan and cool Cliff Booth. This is probably my favorite performance from him. Cliff’s main character trait is his strength and he demonstrates it multiple times, but leaves the scene before anything can escalate. The chemistry between Leo and Brad was electric. Pitt was the meat of the movie.

Margot Robbie was an absolute delight portraying the late Sharon Tate. Despite her slim screen time, but whenever she has screen time, I couldn’t help but smile. I instantly fell in love with her and it’s painfully to think something so sweet and pure could be taken away from us by brainwashed zombies who don’t deserve a life, just a jail cell. I thought her portrayal in the movie was a beautiful tribute and how they handle her gives new life into her legacy.

There’s a great scene where Sharon Tate watches a movie in cinemas that’s she’s in, but instead of Margot Robbie re-creating those scenes, they just show the real Sharon Tate in the movie. Now people were left a bit confused over this decision, although it’s clear to me that erasing the real Tate out of the movie would be more disrespectful to her memory, so leaving her in is a touching tribute to her career and her work. Robbie was the heart of the movie.

The other supporting cast all did terrific with the little screen time most of them had. Kurt Russell makes a welcoming return as a character that I assume is Stuntman Mike from 'Death Proof' - either way still a welcoming presence. He’s also the narrator and I find it hilarious whenever he tries to pronounce Italian movie titles. Al Pacino was a blast to watch as the tight and yet colorful producer. Mike Moh portrayal of Bruce Lee may have sparked some controversy recently, but I thought he was entertaining regardless and I don’t really think it mocks his legacy at all. I mean, this is the same director who made a four hour movie honoring the legend. Margaret Qualley was crazy good as the hippie girl who’s brain washed into a cult family. It’s crazy to know that Damon Herriman has played Charles Manson twice in the same year and month for this movie and the TV show ‘Mindhunter’, which you should totally check out by the way.

After letting the film sit for awhile, there’s so many memorable lines that I would often catch myself recreating just from memory after seeing it twice. There’s so many great moments as well. The lights of LA coming to life at the dust of dawn, or the suspenseful scenes that actually got me feeling tense watching it. Without spoiling anything, but the Spahn Ranch scene where the Manson family stares down a defenseless Cliff Booth as he tries to speak to an old friend was terrifying - reminds me of the opening scene of ‘Inglorious Bastards’, in terms of building up tension that you wait in anticipation to explode.

And of course with it being a Tarantino movie, the music is lost treasure revived for a modern generation. Always fantastic and incredibly catchy. I can’t think of anything better than Cliff driving around LA with the song ‘Bring a Little Lovin’ playing in the background.

Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood took me by surprise of how bad it was, I mean I consider myself QT fan, I really like all of his films except that Death Proof one.

Getting things straight, I found this movie really boring, with ultra extensive and useless plots, I really liked Leonardo DiCaprio's and Brad Pitt's characters, quite a lot, but it seems that the movie didn't know what to do with them, instead we have this long scenes where they're supposed to be developing their characters but nothing happens and everything feels pointless and time-wasting. Sure there are some scenes here and there that are not short of brilliant but, their sum doesn't save the overall movie.

It seems that is like a love letter to that era of film making but it felt to me more snobbish than anything, and also it doesn't add anything to the story. As for the Manson plot which is allegedly the main plot, well, maybe it could turn out better without it.

This is Quentin Tarantino’s latest movie.

It is a very long nostalgic love letter to Hollywood, the way it was and looked 50 years ago.
The movie is more than two and a half hours long, full of references that (I am sure) are very meaningful to movie aficionados but for regular audience are a bit annoying.

One can feel the hand of a master in every aspect of a movie making.
Both lead actors, Leonardo di Caprio and Brad Pitt, give the top notch performances.

Last half an hour of the movie somewhat reminded me of Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” series in terms of art of violence.

I do not regret that I saw but I doubt that I will want to see it again.
If watching old movies is you main hobby, then this film is for you.

If you don't like it, they'll tell you you just didn't 'get it', but there's an offensive lack of anything 'to get'. This is what "Too Big To Fail" looks like in Hollywood. The movie's long, which wouldn't be a problem if it had anything to say, but it doesn't. It's got great actors, great cinematography, and a great soundtrack, and they're all lacking any interesting plot to service and are thus all wasted. Tarantino's always been a bit of a hit and miss director/writer, but even with his more mediocre movies, there have always been one or two wonderfully written scenes that make up for the fluff. This does not have any of that. This is fluff without any genius. I'd have given it even less than a 4 if it hadn't been for the aforementioned actors, cinematography, and music. Expand
