Turned chinese military tactics into same-old Roman legionnaire gimmick. Put exaggerated make-up purely for oriental shock-value even though none of the women were aristocrats who could afford make up. They claim to stick to the real ballad of mulan, but add all kinds of utter rubbish that makes no sense. Should've just made fictional countries and create their own character.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a disaster. 1) Mulan's decision moment : It was a life-risking decision to go to a war on her father's behalf. Let alone the fact that the decision making scene was acclaimed by many fans as the best scene of the animation film, it is indeed an important moment for this very movie to switch the gear from 'Mulan as just a girl' to 'Mulan risking the life to save her father'. In the movie, there was no scene to show this transition in any way. She swung the sword and suddenly she's on the horse with full armors on. What the..

2) Mulan's growth as a soldier : Okay. I admit I'm missing "I'll make a man out of you" so much. But even without the song, there's no growth of Mulan as a soldier because she's born with this special gift, chi. I felt like I was watching some Asian version of a fake Star Wars Jedi movie. As an Asian, I'm sick and tired of western movies abusing the concepts of chi, yin, and yang. Chi is not a force. It was even comedic when I saw the emperor also used the chi.

3) Confusing message : This movie made many sacrifices for the sake of political correctness. And I get that it was meaningful to have Mulan reveal her gender herself and get accepted as a legitimate woman warrior (I think she was accepted as a woman warrior also in the animation but let's move on). But this politically correct, strong Mulan does not fit with traditional Confucian values such as "Devotion to family", and "Loyalty to the dynasty". It's like in the grey area. The animation movie addressed this so smoothly that it managed to successfully lift Mulan as a legitimate war hero while not giving too much stress to Mulan being a woman or other Confucian value. Mixing the political correctness with traditional Confucian values was just a wrong cocktail. It never works that way. You either go progressive or stay exactly where it was in the animation. This actually feels like a setback, and I cannot understand what the heck the message is from this movie.

In the original Mulan made the heroes journey of self-discovery as she develops and overcome the odds by determination, will power and working harder than anyone else. Here there is nothing as she is a Mary Sue or close to it. Even more they removed Mushu. You read that correctly. Mushu was a highlight of the original and it is beyond my imagination how they thought this could be a good idea or well received. They say they wanted appeal more to the Chinese audience. The characters are overall more diluted and inferior to the original. I don't blame the actors here because it is the fault of the script and decisions by the production company. This is also true for director Niki Caro. My respect for what she did here with this crippling limitations for character development and storytelling. I must also mention the CGI. It is also strangely unpolished and sticks out. The soundtrack is O.K. and fight scenes are good. The scenery and looks are a bit strange and it is hard to describe. A YouTube reviewer said it looked like a Bollywood movie where they took out everything that makes a Bollywood movie great (Singing, joy, emotions, etc.). Again this is strangely a fitting description. However my main summary would be that the movie was boring and you will often look on your **** Overall this is a movie that was ruined by corporate decisions and makes you to want to rewatch the original to remove the bad taste in your mouth. I am not sure if I would recognize it as remake of the original if I did not know it. I subtract 2 points for the cash grab on Disney+. Expand

It really feels like this movie is meant for china
They completely botched Mulan and her family.
The worst sin is that they added superhero chi because market survey says people want to be special and not earn things through hard work like in the original.
Really the sins are of three types:
PC stuff, like removing romance with superior officer
China appeasing
general poor writing (stupid villain: "we're the same". "no"
"yes") and lazy effects like removing the pole scene for mountain scene just for lack of stunt actor

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mulan the animation was one of my all time favorite movies and I really wanted this to be great. But this is one hot garbage of a movie. The animation celebrated and portrayed feminism and equality exceptionally well, while this movie got it completely wrong. Reducing Mulan's success to her being born with strong chi is both demeaning and cringy. In the animation, Mulan outperformed all the men in the army because her grit, hard work and determination, she earned the trust and friendship of her peers by proving herself and climbing the pole. She went from a weakling to a physically strong person through the army camp by driving herself to get better. Iconic and crucial moments in the animation such as her cutting her hair, or the emperor saying you bow to no one to Mulan.. removed without any proper replacement.

Don't get me started on the badly CGI pheonix or the shapeshifting witch. To reduce such an iconic and important movie to magical **** is disrespectful. It is embarrassing to say that this is actually worse than Matt Damon's Great Wall.

I also look at people's reactions in comment sections, and me being obsessed with critic reviews on YouTube and whatnot, I've done the work for you. What a lot of people promoting the film are saying is they loved the look of the movie and that this was the best remake yet without much substance to go by to truly convince others on the fence about it. Over 80% of those comments from every source from RT to Chris Stuckmann to Grace Beyond the Trailer, to the actual critics themselves, think that this movie was a disastrous turn for what many hoped Disney would fix after the muck formed from Star Wars. First, let's base this on the animation for those on a nostalgia high: This film misses a plethora of opportunities that we are all used to seeing and hearing, and that is music and whimsical characters. There is literally NONE of that, none!My jaw dropped. I could not believe Disney would do away with all of this. One cute tea scene we all know was all we get for any level of enjoyment! The characters suffer with non personality disorder, you can forget the ancestors, Mushu, the cricket, Mulan's fighting instincts, Mulan's personality, Mulan's human characteristics like NOT having the ability to practically fly around and have superhero powers at age 6. For those comparing their thoughts to this film with Mulan's Chinese history, it still didnt live up to even those writings! The movie was slow, a little boring, she abandoned many soldiers to do the avalanche scene, some witch woman took up half of the story, none of Mulans struggles were evident here. Oh man, just wait till December. I'm done Expand

Overall the movie is terrible, not even trying to compare to the original animation.
The entire movie gives me a feeling of a lack of money during production. For example, in Mulan's home, the original animation featured crowd street include different style animal and buildings, but in this version of Mulan, only one building exists and not lots of people live there(imagine there only a handful of people live there how can you show that Mulan has been seen differently in the overall culture.) and both in the training camp and fighting in the city you also don't see many people exist, although in the animation and this version the main character are those five people but at least show the rest of the army in a reasonable size. The central city is also a joke. I cannot even call it a city, it more like a middle-size countryside, and even in such a small set up, Mulan cannot even fight in there. They have to go to a smaller location to fight. Although they have Donnie yen in the cast roll, why choose him when you do not even have any legit fight scene. The music part is even worse. It feels so uncomfortable as you do not get to hear even one complete theme music. Every background music feels incomplete. I cannot even describe the feeling in my words(maybe you have to watch it to feel how horrible it is). The art design and the script, in my opinion, are the only two things worth looking at, but I guess both of them you have already seen in the trailer.

Hua Mulan is a Chinese legend first and not an animation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hua_Mulan.
So Mushu was added in the animation to please us, he wasn't there in the first place.
Truth be told, it's a good Chinese movie. It doesn't follow the Hollywood convention of storytelling so it's not well adapted to us, so we need to be open-minded to another style to appreciate it. (of course we don't have to and can just hate it)
Is it perfect? Well, which movie is?
If you go see this movie, thinking that Walt Disney's version of Mulan is the source of truth, you're bound to be disappointed, because it's closer to the original legend.
All that being said, it's indeed censored, because to my understanding the legend is much more bloody and would be ill-advised for children... which are a great part of the target audience I believe.

I get they wanted to make a realistic movie but this just plain and simple didn't work. The animated movie had heart and a message; the live action film had none of those. The musical numbers in Mulan were some of the best music out there; they could have at least had many of the songs in this film in instrumental form; but nope! Mulan in this film is Rey like in Star Wars; super powerful from the beginning. There's no training, no struggle, a character you could care less about. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Kinda boring and poorly paced. Cutting 20 minutes would really help. Not a particularly fun movie. Pretty vistas. I disliked giving the hero Ki powers. The whole point of the story is a normal girl worked hard, was brave and clever, etc. Instead now she’s a superhero? Weird choice that undermines the character, plot and theme of the whole narrative. The original is far more enjoyable. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. MILD SPOILERS:

This version of Mulan makes her a Mary Sue. She is born with a huge reservoir of chi, which makes her more powerful than everyone else. She didn't work for it, she didn't do anything to deserve it. She was just born with it. In the animation, she actually makes up for her lack of physical strength by outsmarting everyone else. Not here. Here, she's just a child prodigy. Just because she takes part in the training doesn't mean she needs it. She's actually suppressing her power, Elsa style.

Apart from that, the movie has glaring editing amateurish mistakes. One moment she's holding the sword, the next she's already armored up and striding out of her village, any emotional charge or dramatic tension is gone from this scene compared to the original animation. In another part, Mulan wants to find higher ground to fight the enemies, she mounts her horse, and the very next frame she's already behind a rock shooting arrows! It feels like the movie was butchered in the editing room.

They also stripped down any comic relief whatsoever. No Mushu, no jokes, even granny had to go. The movie takes itself too seriously to the point where it becomes dull. The actor playing Mulan has the acting range of a wood plank. The CGI is sometimes OK and sometimes hideous.

There's nothing epic about the fights like it was promised. We've seen wire-fu done a lot better in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and in House of Flying Daggers, and even in The Matrix. There are no epic scale battle scenes.

This movie is inferior to every other version of Mulan out there, including and especially to the animation of 1998.

It's not a terrible movie, mind you. But it's definitely NOT worth the 30 bucks. And I have no wish to watch it again. One time was more than enough. This movie is in fact scaled-down in every sense. There's magic (or chi) but it's not magical. The fights seem to be actually scaled down from the animation, fewer people, less epic, huge empty fields. Even the Imperial City has no citizens. Empty streets everywhere. We never get to connect with the other characters and we do not care for them. Mulan's village is smaller. The war camp is smaller. The pacing feels rushed. It's amazing that with all the songs taking up screen time and about 30 minutes less, the original amination felt a lot more fleshed out and had better pacing.

Disney sacrificed everything that made this movie special in order to appeal to the Chinese audience. I hope it pays out to them. This movie is just the latest disappointment in a series of unnecessary remakes. It is certainly not worth 30 dollars to watch.

I love the story, and I was very exciting for this PG-13 remake. Like all of the great remakes, I hoped it would tell the story in a new way that elevated aspects of the story the original couldn't.

Instead, Mulan (2020) strictly stays the same as the original, except it gets rid of everything that made the original exception. I disliked so much about this movie, I will break down each aspect, starting with the only two positive things I can say about the film.

Representation:
The fully Asian cast in this movie set in China is needed. The original, while a product of a different time and featuring many Asian voice actors, also commits the sin of appropriation. Good on Mulan (2020)!.

Scenery:
The scenery is breathtaking.

One neutral aspect of the movie is the music. I really liked the re-imagining of the classic Mulan songs, but this was hard to mess up because the original music was that strong.

Now for the bad stuff.

Story/characters:
With the exception of Mulan and her father, all other character arcs were written out of the movie. Mulan and her father are the only characters who grow at all. All other characters strictly serve as background. By comparison, the original had growth arcs for Mulan, Mulan's father, the commander, Mushu, and Mulan's three films. The original even acknowledges what happens when a character fails to grow and learn lessons in the form of the emperor's advisor. The lack of these secondary characters in Mulan (2020) HURT the film and story badly. There is barely any emotion in this film at all.

Acting:
Nearly every character in the original Mulan is played to perfection. The voice acting was incredible. I'm not sure what happened to the acting in Mulan (2020). Nearly everyone delivers every line wooden. Donnie Yen, who I love in his other films, is particularly guilty of this along with the emperor (Jet Li). It's almost like the actors were told not to show any emotion. Even the great Tzi Ma deadpans nearly every line. Action:
I'm admittedly not the biggest fan of floaty martial arts, which is a lot of the action in Mulan. But even that style was done poorly. Very rarely would the camera show two full combatants in a fight, focusing instead on close ups of individual movement, which made the action hard to track. Very little of the action looked real, except for when the masterful Donnie Yen was on screen. The action was boring and not of a caliber befitting a PG-13 movie. Every emotional scene from the first film that was again on screen was notably worse than the original.

Editing:
As mentioned above, the editing was lazy and confusing. Shots flew by too fast and failed to add to the story.

Directing: So many of these issues within the film should have been addressed by the director. Why not frame wider action sequences? Why not tell the actors to stop being so wooden (even worse if the director made the choice to have all the characters be emotionless on purpose). Comedy:
There is little to no humor to speak of in this movie.

This movie was painfully bad, and I had so much hope for it. Don't waste your time or your money; wait for it to come out on regular Disney+ if you absolutely have to see it.

First the good:
The cinematography is beautiful, no doubt.
The soundtrack is good as well, albeit without thinking about the musical aspect of the 1998 animation.

The bad:
By trying to please everyone, the director has efficiently managed to create a movie which feels distinctly flat, without any heart or emotional connection to the characters on screen.
The screenwriters misspelled "Mongolians" as well (they didn't, but it's just so damn stupid).

There is no real feeling of impending doom like in the 1998 animation, and the dark scenes to establish the ruthlessness of the Khan, are gone.

With the inclusion of "Chi" they have also effectively removed the fundamental message of the whole tale. Mulan is just the best at everything because reasons, it's weird.

The character display some nonsensical reasoning as well, which I won't spoil, but holy damn, there are some encounters which are just straight up badly written.

In summation:
The movie is questionably written, without any real heart, and feels like the 1998 animation, if the animation had had a lobotomy.

If you want to support HK, go to social media not a movie rating website I think most Disney movie are falling into a serious problem about "creating strong female characters".(star wars, frozen, captain marvel, etc)
I'd loved to see female characters pop up on the big screen, however not Disney's formula. All four movie (mulan, star wars, frozen, captain marvel) has its main character "gifted" with power, however, there is always a evil male character telling them they needs to be "that good girl" in their thoughts. Then at certain point, the fema character realized she needs no one and unleashed the inner power. The problem here is, there is no reason for them to change, and since they are "gifted", they can suddenly become super powered like turning on a switch, which makes the story mary sue.

How our kids can relate on such story, when the movie is trying to tell them you can only be a hero when you are gifted.

The original mulan is a very good movie.

I loved the very stylized cinematography and the bold visuals. I loved the variation of the story and the foil that Mulan found in the character of Xianniang. Those who loved the original (as I did) will find there are many small homages to it throughout, expertly woven in with the story in an organic way.
