It was so bad and made absolutely no sense. The dialogue was so clunky and just awful. The movie is all around inconsistent. It was so bad the suspense filled moments were laughable because it was so bad it was funny.

Mushu is not in this movie, rendering it completely unwatchable for me, the characters were very bland, and I felt the twist ending was very forced. And also, Disney had the bright idea to put it in a paywall. Mulan is the latest Disney live-action remake of their 1998 movie of the same name. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic which forced theatres to shut down, The Walt Disney Company have decided to release Mulan via Disney+ for a premium fee while other countries will have theatrical release where the local theatres have been slowly reopened.

Set in Imperial China, Hua Mulan (Yifei) is an adventurous and active girl much to her parents’ disappointment who had hope to find her a good husband. Somewhere in the Imperial outpost to the north, Rouran warriors led by Bori Khan (Lee) attack the outpost with the help of a powerful and shapeshifter witch named Xian Niang (played by Gong Li).

Because of the attack, the Emperor of China (played by Jet Li) decree that every family in the country must contribute one man to fight against the invaders. Unfortunately for the Hua family, Mulan does not have any brothers which means her father, who is a former soldier in the Imperial Army, must contribute himself to fight in the war. Due to her father’s ailing health and may not survive the war, Mulan decide to take her father’s place as soldier and sneak out of her home at night along with her father’s sword and armour.

Disguising herself as a man and called herself Hua Jun, she joins the Imperial Army under the command of Commander Tung (Yen) where she trains with the other conscripts to prepare for the upcoming war without exposing herself as a woman.

Unlike last year’s Aladdin and The Lion King live-action remakes, Mulan is not a full adaptation of its animated movie as there are some changes in this movie. Despite the changes, the basic plot of the movie still remains the same as its original counterpart and easy to follow. While Mushu does not appear in this movie and no singing songs moments, it really does make sense for not to be in this movie is because it would have been unrealistic given the direction of this movie.

For the performance of the cast, everyone has done a great job especially Liu Yifei and Donnie Yen. However, some of the characters didn’t really have much character development which made them easily forgettable later on. As for Gong Li’s character, I felt her character wasn’t really developed well and her character’s purpose was only to serve as the evil counterpart to Mulan.

While this movie cannot be compared to 2009’s Mulan: Rise of a Warrior, which is a Chinese production and with more realistic and darker tone, this movie is still watchable on its own and it is meant for family and children. Same goes to the original animated movie. Whichever one is better is up for a debate. If you have seen the original animated movie and the 2009 movie, give this movie a shot.… Expand

An ill-conceived narrative mess that does not compare well to the 1998 animated Mulan. An insult to Chinese identity because someone decided to make Chinese actors deliver lines in English (to pander to western audience).

In an animation, it is fine to have Chinese characters speak English, because it is a story that does not seek to be "real", like a fairy tale. The audience will not be that bothered. The 1998 animated Mulan is an empowering "fairy tale" story with Chinese elements inspired by a folklore ballad.

When Disney decided to do a live action remake with production design that seems to be aiming for authenticity, the game changes. It is just wrong to force Chinese Actors that can speak Mandarin, to deliver lines (emotion) in English. Language is integral to one's way of thinking, one's personal identity, one's cultural heritage and social image. Forcing Chinese actors to speak English, like they don't have their own perfectly fine full-functioning language that is just as full of nuance and complex communication, is the Ultimate Disrespect to Chinese culture.

If they wanted 'authenticity' and to pander to Chinese audience, they should have done this live action remake in Mandarin, and dubbed into English (or subtitled) for western audience, and spent some money hiring Chinese scriptwriter, production staff, who will know the culture intrinsically. The acting would be better if the actors were allowed to use their native language. And from an authenticity viewpoint, it is odd to have a 'realistic' historical folklore Chinese drama in spoken English.

From the pander-to-the-western-audience viewpoint, they would have done better to do a shot-by-shot live remake, with all the music and beloved characters of the animated classic.… Expand

The original did everything better. And I've maybe watched the original two times 20 years ago and I still couldn't help but be puzzled by the changes this movie made. Beautifully shot but that's the only thing this movie has going for it.The original did everything better. Mulan 2020 feels like it was made by 10 years old Marvel fan. Completely misses the point. No 'hard-work to get what you want' moral. Instead: 'be born special, or be useless'. Introduction of Chi was probably the most stupid idea I encountered in movies ever. It's insane how absolutely no one in Disney thought 'Do we really want to make Mulan a second Superman'? That's NOT what old Mulan was about. If I wanted to get something like this I'd go and watch superheroes movies (new Mulan is considerably one, sadly).

About Mushu. I was told that new Mulan will focus more on realism. Instead it got even less realistic. Chi, Witches, wall-running enemies,VERY unrealistic fights. The last fight was so unrealistic and in fact terrible that I regret watching Mulan even more. It's the 'I'm the good guy so I beat the bad guy without any effort' kind of fight. It also amazes me how many critics seem to completely ignore what new Mulan did wrong. Plot (it's flattened old Mulan's plot, without any depth in it, also often unrealistic with tons of plot armour), acting (main character doesn't know what emotions are, or atleast it feels so),character development (or lack of it), visuals (often felt very unrealistic. For a 200 million $ budget it shouldn't be a thing). The only part I found decent/good was music. Maybe it was actually really good, but the rest of the film could have overshadowed it with its awfulness for me.

I'm usually rating films higher than most people do, but in this case I feel like Disney just spit in my face. They didn't even try to make this movie reasonable, it's a clear money grab. 'People see Mulan, they'll buy it'~~ probably someone in Disney.

I'm sad that I have to say that, but I'd rather watch 'The Great Wall' again over Mulan. New Mulan is probably the most forgettable film I;ve ever watched. I'd really like it to be a good movie, but it's just not.

2/10 because it actually had some decent parts. Still wouldn't recommend this to anyone though, especially for old Mulan fans.… Expand

Watching the movie filled me with rage. This movie only exists to make money, there is no heart or soul in any of the directing, performances, and writing. Paying money to watch this movie is an ethically bad thing to do as you will be justifying more insulting and lifeless remakes in the future. Added unnecessary black magic, unnecessary stunts and tricks like running vertivally up a 50 foot wall, didn't stay true to the storyline. There's a phoenix and no Mushu or Cricky Mulan already knows how to fight and do parkour since a child, they added a sister to the movie for no reason what so ever. Added unnecessary superpowers like a superman (how trivial), added a second villain to a woman in order not to offend "gender justice" (but she is ABSOLUTELY not superfluous here)
In addition, humor disappeared, a cricket, a dragon and three male characters (fat, long and stupid) disappeared, the love line disappeared.
Everything was cut out and the focus was only on Mulan.
a faceless movie about a miracle woman, okay if they made it interesting, but it's mediocre.
The saddest thing is that I knew it was going to be a bad movie, but I had hope. It is perceived as a cheap Indian movie. it is deceiving the audience who wanted to watch it because of their love for the original 1998 fairy tale.
this is also a fairy tale for 0+ but in 2020 it feels fake. I'm too lazy to write about the sins of this film. I'm crying. and after all, once upon a time Disney shot good cartoons ...… Expand

The girl starts off perfect there is No flaw to overcome I feel like she was the same person she was from the beginning of the movie. some of the characters could have honestly been taken out of the movie and it would have not changed a thing. Also other characters I felt didn't know what they stood for. for example mulan's father encouraged her to train and be like the boys except for when she wanted to go to war. finally the whole movie was just hard to get into. which is a shame because this was one of my favorite movies growing up.It was visually pleasing that's the only reason I'm giving it a one but they could've have done so much better with this.… Expand

the graphics are made at a high enough level, the acting has a good color, each character is sufficiently disclosed and has its own story, of course, there are some drawbacks, but there is not a single film that would be without drawbacks.
In the end, I want to say that this film will grow in the eyes of people who like to think, and not just watch; also, this film will give an impetus to many to develop and achieve their goals, despite the opinion of society.… Expand

The AI is so develop that this is the first time Disney bring a robot play the Main Character. Even the cascadeur is much prettier. The movie is superficial in all aspect (content, image,...). I would like to refund the money I bought the ticket

this is more senseless more original or 1998 movie 1. That main lead (mulan) have only one expressions in every scenes (maybe it my own opinion and i don't know you agree or not).

They took as story about a woman working hard to achieve her goals while the whole world is against her, into a woman born with powers and everyone just treats her like she's special.
Why work hard when you can be born with magic right?
oh and don't expect to see fan favorites like Mushu. Apparently Disney wanted this to be a grim and boring movie with 0 comedy.
Stop doing live action remakes if you're just going to make sh** worse.

Mulan live action 2020 is in equal parts unoriginal and well produced. Plays it safe and delivers the basic premise but the cast here is just fantastic. I had a lot of fun watching this. O filme é demasiadamente longo. Temos a sensação que nada está acontecendo, o clima entre os personagens não são dos melhores, principalmente entre a Mulan e o Rapaz interessado. As discussões acerca da cultura Chinesa não passam do obvio, a ponto de animações terem discussões infinitamente mais profundas.

A fotografia é muito bonita, porém não me surpreendi com o HDR. Nota-se que as cores ficam mais bonitas, claro. Mas não me recordo de ver um frame expositivo, com cores abundantes e contraste absoluto. Não se deve exigir isso de um filme, sendo que é uma decisão artística. I fell asleep in the middle of the movie, and that is a very bad sign considering I've stayed wide awake for 3-hour epics like Lord of the Rings and The Avengers. It's a shame the movie isn't a musical like the animated version, because it would've filled in the gaps much better in a movie that otherwise feels way too long. There's a few interesting scenes here and there, but it's not enough to hold the movie up from its flaws. As for the ridiculous $30 on top of a subscription, that alone would warrant this movie to be a 3 or below. But I want to be fair and judge the movie for what it is and not the bad corporate decisions behind it. Unfortunately it's still an unremarkable movie.… Expand

Utter disappointment. I was ready to a new Mulan. I love the old one, but was happy to see a live-action remake. Unfortunately, this version was terrible. In the movie she does this because it is "the honor way to serve the kingdom", this is not honor, this is just teaching children that if you obey the rule you will be honored, this is not honor, this is propaganda. Not only it failed the hype and expectations, it pushes unnecessary ideologies and malicious messages to younger generation. Disney had an easy chance to just retell such a meaningful story, instead just erasing all the meaningful part and replacing it with misdirecting and meaningless story, what a shame!… Expand

First, the photography and all the visual language that accompanies you from beginning to end, are a true delight for the eyes ... A majestic fresco, with a color treatment that highlights each & every shot. Yes, the photography is really striking and can't leave you insensible. Also, the music inhabitates every chapter with an immense grace, and accompanies this emotional journey alongside Mulan in the most grandiose way !

The screenplay keeps the same main beats as the original animated version, but upgrades the storyline as a whole, with more subtlety and depth ... Yifei Liu has a magnetic presence and transmits us a lot of emotions through her so expressive eyes ...

Of course, the choregraphies and the staging also have a very finely artistic language, which flows like a smooth dance, throughout the movie ... Obviously there are some striking scenes and images that nicely punctuate the adventure and participate to make it evolve into an ever more epic & emotional way.

Mulan's interactions with each character, are a big strenght of the movie, they all are a step and a deciding element in her evolution as a woman & hero, from the very first scene up until the very last scene.
