This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Remember that story where someone through effort, cunning and commitment became better than their male counterparts. None of that is in this movie. She’s just born with mystic powers. The Mongolian invasion no longer exists. They’re just 7 dudes riding horses on a personal vendetta against the whole Chinese Empire. Mushu is gone, the 3 funny soldiers? gone. The Emperor goes from not accepting Mulan to naming her general in a span of 30 seconds!! It gets better in the final act, but does not live to what is already been build. A big pile of CHI! Expand

Very minor spoilers inside, but I assume everyone has watched the original.

A complete chore to watch. Mulan has magical powers from the start, and doesn't need to work for them. No need for hard work and a training montage. What's the message here?

Too many dumb plot points crammed in, leaving no time for meaningful exposition. Remember when in the original, they introduce the doll of the girl in the mountain village and Mulan later places it at the grave of the General? None of that. They just find a bunch of discarded armor someone dumped in a smoldering building and tell the audience to be sad about it.

The sound track is terribly dull by comparison to the original, even if you disregard the shameful lack of musical numbers.

And yes, I get it, the fighting scenes reference classic Chinese martial arts movies, so they're not supposed to look realistic. Doesn't change the fact that they are terribly badly done, just to make extra sure the audience gets the reference.

I watched it. Don't repeat my mistake.

Oh boy. 2020’s Mulan was…eh. My family and I watched it on Sunday. It was decent and some parts where genuinely enjoyable. It was decent and some parts where genuinely enjoyable. However, unfortunately, I think it has far more negatives going for it than positives I’m afraid (especially since my 6-year-old was so excited to watch it, but wound up walking away in the first 10 minutes).

To start, this new "Mulan" is an entirely different story from the 1998 Disney animated classic or even the 6th Century Ballad of Mulan. Mulan was a heroic story of a young girl in Ancient China who, in order to bring honor and pride to her family, risked death and torture to keep her father safe. Taking her father's place in the war to save his life. She overcame obstacles that men, bigger and stronger then she could not. It never overshadowed or undermined men. It was a story of leadership, and putting the needs of others before your own. A story of doing the right thing, no matter the personal cost. In the end she tries to offer to her father the treasures she got from the emperor as gift to bring honor to their family only to find out that she herself was more precious to him than anything else. All while having a positive message about both sexes doing what was needed to be done. It’s a story beloved by people of all ages and backgrounds. 2020's Mulan is more of a reimagined historical documentary than an actual Disney live-action adaptation. It's lost the magic that made it Disney. No heartfelt positive message. No comedy. No light-hearted interactions. No songs. No animal sidekicks. No Bisexual Le Shang. It's just a story about a historical Chinese figure, turned Mary Sue, being exceedingly monotone, uptight, and strict throughout a war who will fulfill her duty and "bring honor to us all” (China) by being a one-woman wrecking ball. It's obvious the movie tries exceedingly hard to be “realistic” in multiple aspects of the film. However, this Mulan was born with incredible Chi and godly natural talent and abilities, was a complete badbutt from the start, the fact that there is magic and sorcery in the film, and unnatural acrobatics that would absolutely require assisted rigging say otherwise. Especially since the Green Screen and CGI in this film are painfully obvious. Other than that, the movie tends to be slow-moving with dry and stale interactions from the cast. There are many awkward interactions that feel out of place.

Lastly, I have to mention all of the negative publicity and acts behind this film and during production of it. Especially the human rights crimes that were taking place in Xinjiang were video footage of hundreds of Uighur prisoners were blindfolded, shackled, and shoved into busses headed for internment camps. The actress portraying Mulan, Yifei Liu, has been very public about siding against freedom and the people of Hong Kong by supporting the Hong Kong Police cracking down on protests. In the final credits of the film, Disney offers “special thanks” to eight government entities in Xinjiang where several “re-education” camps have been documented. The film also expresses thanks to the “Publicity Department of CPC Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomy Region Committee,” the Chinese Communist Party’s Propaganda Department in Xinjiang. Finally, just as a last show of toxicity surrounding this film, the film crew have allegedly filed a complaint regarding the films diversity issues and for being forced to take DNA tests to prove their "Asianness" because there have been complaints that the film is too "White" despite having an all-Asian cast. *Sighs*…Sorry, but Disney absolutely missed the mark. I don't think I'll be seeing this one again and I will be informing the rest of my family and friends about it. 2020’s Mulan looks like it’s been turned into a glorified propaganda piece for China. #Disney #WaltDisneyStudios #Mulan #BoycottMulan #Dishonor

Like some many others out there, I grew up watching the animated movie and still watch it from time to time. The message behind the story of Mulan is great, with hard work, perseverance, and never giving up, you can make a difference regardless of gender. In Mulan 2020, you basically have to be born with special powers and abilities. Gone are hard work, perseverance, and never giving up, and Jedi/Airbender powers are in. This is only one problem I have with this movie, but it is the biggest. They could not even get the message and meaning of the story of Mulan right. The creators of this film wanted to please the Western values of the "strong woman" and somehow not spoil the original cartoon.

Indeed, on the one hand, it was necessary to show a strong and independent heroine on movie screens, so that the Western and especially active spectator-fighter for social justice was satisfied, and on the other, to try to keep at least something from the original source in order to please the Chinese audience, which is far from the mainstream movements of the west. Because of this, the story of Mulan looks unfinished, and the actions and actions of the characters do not always have a logical background. Accordingly, the creators had to do the IMPOSSIBLE. Unfortunately, the creators of this film did not succeed, the movie became primitive, with a huge number of cliches. Do not pay attention to the opinion of "critics" several things are important to them: - LGBT - transgender people - strong and independent woman - anti-family propaganda
If this is present critics will be delighted!!! Conclusion is a terrible adaptation of everyone's favorite cartoon.

I loved the classic but this film is just bad. It is bad for both type of audiences the ones who watched the classic and people who are seeing this for the first time. In the classic movie, Mulan goes from a quirky lovable girl to a confident strong woman who can stand up to anyone. However, in this one, she has the super power of Chi that lets her do gravity deifying stunts (which is more in tune of Bollywood movies), she can master skills faster than anyone else and becomes a very bland character. The comedic element is gone from the movie and replaced with a more serious tone, which is hard to take seriously when the fighting begins some combatant’s just fly into the air or running and doing tricks on the wall. This movies has some pros to it but it's cons far outweigh the pros. Overall I would say If you love the classic don't watch it you would waste $30, your time and be pissed by the end. In addition, for those who are just going to watch it for the first time, you would still waste $30 and your time, but you would not be as butt hurt as the classic lovers. Expand

I could understand most of these changes, but they just don't work. The whole war aspect was executed poorly, and Mulan's character development was non-existent. Instead of breaking through barriers and proving self-worth, this Mulan is supernatural kung fu, Avengers-style superhero - no struggle in overcoming yourself, bettering other men, or using clever strategies.
This movie is flawed on so many levels that I will not have enough space to describe it all. Only redeeming quality of this film is its cinematography - the film looks absolutely stunning.

Forgettable and unremarkable movie solely produced to appease Chinese audiences. Wouldn’t pass as a made for TV movie in most Western countries.

However, what’s truly terrible about this movie is it’s production history. Filming in areas of China where innocent people are put into concentration camps because of their religion and then even thanking local government authorities in the credits is absolutely disgusting. And don’t even get me started on the lead actress supporting violent police crackdowns...

In short, please avoid spending any money on this movie. One can only hope Disney learns something from this debacle and stops appeasing the Chinese government.

With extreme ease I can say that Mulan is to this day the most ambitious film of all the films that Disney has remade in live action.

The scale, staging, colors, details and setting easily put it on a higher level.
The trailers already showed some of it but seeing it in the finished film lets you appreciate the attention to detail in a better way.

Speaking about the film, I can say that I really enjoyed the first part, with the elements it took from the animated film and because it keeps a nice pace that feels pleasant and fun.

However, once the middle of the film is over and on its way to the third act, the film loses its compass, and when I say that, it's not that it becomes a bad film but that it becomes somewhat cartoonish.
Perhaps the weight of staying true to the ease with which things get fixed up in an animated film.

The way she accepts her destiny, the way she accepts that she's a woman in the Imperial army, that feels a bit forced because of the way the film pushes that plot development so quickly.
The final course, the final battle, that personality twist of one of the villains, it feels forced.
I didn't like that it doesn't feel organic, that frustrated me a lot.

Without a doubt, it's a fantasy story and also this never stops being a Disney film but that's a problem by itself because in the conflict Disney bets on the easy show, the Marvel kinda show, so it lost points in my eyes for it.

Liu Yifei does a good job, although I feel like they didn't give her much to work with. I feel like the script didn't give her much to explore with the character and it's a shame.
The film is totally hers, there's no doubt about that because of the rest of the cast frankly all are merely supportive, none leaves an impression with the exception of Donnie Yen and that's me being benevolent. I mean she's not a great actress, but anyway I feel the film didn't allow her to explore the character in the best way, although I blame this more on the script than on her because it's clear that she did take the role seriously and worked with what it was provided. I do think it was a sad thing to see the film ending up on Disney +, both for what it means for movie theaters and for the fact that it diminishes the film in a huge way.
Don't forget, this is a 200 million dollars blockbuster, and I honestly, would've loved to see it on theaters but today, beyond the cost of renting it, ending up in the service that way, makes it feel disposable.

About the changes between the animated film and this one, to tell you the truth, some of the complaints seems ridiculous to me, mainly because people has to understand something: This is supposed to be different, if you really want to see the exact the same thing, then go watch the animated one. Of the rest I can only reaffirm that I think that of all the live action films that Disney has released of its animated classics, this is the one that I've enjoyed the most.
Because the truth is that until now, none of them has made me say: '' Oh wow, it was wonderful. '' And this one didn't do it either, but I think it's the one that completed the circle in a more satisfactory way despite its defects, and maybe when the time comes, I will add it to my collection.

And if you're **** about the price. Well, sucks to be poor.

Yet, its supposed to be realistic, so they took out mooshoo. Then replaced him with a Phoenix who serves no purpose in the movie. Absolutely no character development. And the action scenes are boring and everything just feels so forced and inorganic. Like the scene with the spider and the pots, it felt so forced and fake. And literally no one can tell that she's a girl? She looked alot like a girl for most of the movie when pretending to be a man to join the army in stead of her father. Just such a bad bad movie. The action was pretty bad and a bit overly exaggerated with quote from the director "we tried to avoid the wire as much as possible" and you can tell in the first 10 minutes all of it was wires.
Only reason why I give it a 2 is because it at least maintained a point A to point B story easy to follow up and something that was somewhat entertaining but overall it missed a lot of points.

In my opinion this Live Action is one of the best Disney has made. It's different, yet familiar. It's for kids, but also for adults. It has action, it has spectacular visuals, awesome music and a good message.
I particularly don't mind the fact it is different, in my opinion, live-action remakes should be different to thenoriginals. If I want to see the original, I will. I like surprises on the new versions, and new takes on stuff. I loved the original classic Mulan, and I did not expect this one to be a copy of it. I myself thought that Lion King could've been at least a little bit different for example.
I definitely recommend this movie, I believe it is a good family friendly movie with good effects, good music and beautiful visuals.
In the end, however, you'll have to judge for yourself (after watching it, and not like most people in here nowadays, that bash stuff without even playing/watching them....)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, “BORING”. You don’t even compare it to our beloved 1998 animated Mulan, this movie is a meal without salt aka tasteless. Being an Asian, who was born and raised in Asia, I grew up watching a lot of Chinese movies like this and trust me, there are a lot of great Kung Fu movies with way better production and better storyline. This is just an ordinary Kung Fu movie which is PUSHED to be Mulan because they know we all love the animated version so they could make money out of it. Talking about the production, editing was terrible. Several scenes were annoyingly obvious that they shot in a small studio and lightings were really bad. And those fireworks at the end looked fake af. Seriously tho! Gong Li role was unnecessary for the movie and she died with no reason (Awww... poor Gong Li). I mean if you want to add a new role, why don’t you just make it awesome since Gong Li is a great actress and she can play any role you want really. Last but not least, they were trying to creat a “safe work place” like, Mulan can’t fall in love with her Commanding officer (Li Shang in animated version) because producer or director is supporting “Me Too Movement” so it is inappropriate!? TF gurl! You lost your god damn mind. Why can’t you just leave your political opinions out of this movie? No one was pushed to fall in love with a commander like the way you pushed this typical kung fu movie to be Mulan. As a Disney fan myself, I didn’t feel anything Disney and It really is a huge disappointment. Mulan is an admiring and inspiring Disney princess who risked her own life to save her family and at the end, she saved the whole China but this version didn’t sell me anything to inspire at all. I must say it is an emotionless movie. Mic drop! Expand

CON: poor Chinese cultural understanding, action sequences draw from wuxia but fail to do it well, editing is choppy and fails to build any tension or emotional impact, dialogue feels translated directly from Chinese and is both simple and lacks complexity. This film feels ultimately like a potshot by Hollywood productions at a Chinese movie. They tried really hard to make this appealing to a Chinese movie goer and honestly, missed this mark completely. Disney seems to have missed the development of Chinese cinema in the last 20 years. Taste in 'costume dramas' has developed a lot and there are much higher standards in both the production and acting. Chinese cinema now has done every part of Mulan 2020 did, but far better. Removing the distinctly American parts of the original exposes the flaws of this movie and magnifies it to who are more familiar with the material. Despite the complaints about the cartoon Mulan, the cartoon Mulan is somehow far more genuine in it's representation by being true to the American Chinese experience. The irony is the remake poisons it's own Qi by not being true to itself in either the cultural origins or the Disney predecessor. Expand

It lacks the depth and emotional variety of the original, and comes up as dry and flat. Not anything special in the background music except a copy of the original songs. No emotional changes, no transition from village life to home atmosphere, no intensity. I can only excuse these decisions given that in the asian culture it is not polite to express intense emotions. However they could've found a balance. Mulan's personality has dramatically changed between the two movies, from cheerful, kind, courageous, determined and honest to silent, non expressive, a bit proud and too weak. In the original, she fought hard to get strong both physically and mentally. She never hid her character. In this version, she is struggling until she discovers her "chi" which magically boosts everything from her fighting skills to the team's full acceptance with almost no effort at all. It's cringe, cause you can't see a smooth/ logical transition in the soldiers' feelings towards her, they just go from "you brought shame upon your family" straight to "You are a warrior, you will lead us". There is no inner struggling, no overcoming of their prejudices, no final giving in to their gut and faith in her. It doesn't make sense that a cartoon covers all these aspects of human nature and the actual film just overrides them all. The actress is ok, although I don't see the impulsion, innocence, humility and kindness found in the original. They seem forced and don't flow naturally out of her. There is more than one scene that I've caught her being a bit too proud and snob about her acomplishments. There are many other things I would like to refer to, but these are the most obvious to me. Generally I expected a lot more. re. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
Soy mujer y me menosprecian.
