An okay, but disappointing film. It is missing a ton of things from it's animated predecessor, and the lack of filming on location. The film is sterile, and filmed on set/in front of green screen for much of the film.

Was expecting the story to be similar to the cartoon, but was disappointed with the direction they took Mulan. Mulan was interesting on how at first she had difficult keeping up, but over time earned the respect of her comrades.

This Mulan 2020, shows great empowerment for women which many needs, love for family, and self confrontations and reflections. It focuses not on the romance, few in character development but more on standing firm to what you believe is your right, and helping individuals go to the right path. Many I think will hate on this movie, but I strongly suggest you watch the movie first and be the judge. Mulan 1998 focused more on character development, while Mulan 2020 doxused more on… Expand

Ok so I'm not a fan of the current regime in China. Its full on evil. But this is a film which many good people worked hard on. So if we ignore the fact...that an evil regime will benefit from this film and if we ignore the fact that the leadOk so I'm not a fan of the current regime in China. Its full on evil. So if we ignore the fact...that an evil regime will benefit from this film and if we ignore the fact that the lead is infamous for her active support of the Hong Kong democracy crack down by mainland China and if we ignore that this film was actually filmed next to concentration camps and used slave labour only to actually thank the Chinese officials in charge of that well documented genocide etc...if we ignore all that ...what about the film? Well the film is not mulan as we know it. Its not much like the poem and it's even less like the cartoon. Its like ...star wars with the force called chi and some Chinese state propaganda thrown in for good measure. The Dragon is gone too. Apparently Chinese audiences didn't like it but western Americans loved it...So ofcourse China won. I guess the live action Shrek remake will also cut eddie Murphy and donkey Because apparently the chinese regime doesnt like donkeys...or winnie the pooh. The film is average as a film. Its no longer about coming of age or work hard and get good or anything to do with women's plight in China...which under the 1 child rule has been pretty bleak. Its more about being born the right type of Chinese person...So again very Xi JingPing rhetoric and reminiscence of Nazi Germany superman philosophy. Outside of that it looks lovely and sounds fine. Just very average overall and not really for kids. Not sure who this is for except China but apparently China isn't a fan due to the issues it has brought to light in our uncensored free press. In China there has been a media black out. So i found myself asking was it really worth it Disney ? No is the simple answer. This is a shameless greedy cash grab which has failed and cost reputations as well as lives. As a fan of mulan I'm gutted but in 2020...What more can we expect ? I am not going to extend much more since the film has left me indifferent and the only thing that stands out could be the aesthetic that fulfills a correct soundtrack quite well.

A movie to forget that not even my ten-year-old niece liked.

In Mulan, I see a love letter to China from the West. Not only does the movie cross cultural divides, but racial and political ones as well. Meanwhile, two hashtags are trending, #BoycottMulan and #MilkTeaAlliance, attributed to Liu YiFei'sIn Mulan, I see a love letter to China from the West. Not only does the movie cross cultural divides, but racial and political ones as well. Meanwhile, two hashtags are trending, #BoycottMulan and #MilkTeaAlliance, attributed to Liu YiFei's support for the Hong Kong police, and China's encroachment upon its smaller neighbors. In effect, support for this movie is tantamount to support for the CCP and its policies.

I then took time to consider the virtues highlighted in the movie. "Loyalty to country" is one shared between the US and China. Additionally, each country is experiencing its share of demonstrations, not to mention detention camps. Loyalty to country may take the form of protest, with the aims of helping the country take steps towards a more just society. In Mulan, I see a figure who takes stock of the situation then breaks the rules in order to serve the greater good, not a staunch nationalist who toes the party line.

Another virtue highlighted is "truth." This is the Trojan horse that can be directed at either system of government. The truth is that both countries are ruled by wealthy elites, even as both aspire to be republics. Without acknowledging the corruption of both systems, the ideals of neither state will be fully realized, a truth similar to the one arrived by Mulan on her own journey.

In short, boycott Huawei, not diplomatic tentpoles like Mulan. Even if it is a "Panda Express" interpretation of the revered folk hero, it is an improved approximation. As symbolic gestures go, this offers hope for improved relations between the countries. There is more to be found in common within our cultures, virtues, not to mention shortcomings, esp. with globalization intertwining us closer each day.… Expand

Develop your characters so that their actions makes sense. Mulan was portrayed as a hero with no real weakness, no real substance. I understand you want to push strong female characters but the way that it was done with chi that makes her super human is very.... uncreative. And that essentially create a template hero who has no substance or personality that the audience can relate to. The original movie she was a hero not because of strength but she was smart. How in the original she figured out how to climb the pole with technique rather then pure strength. Or how she repelled the attack on snow mounted with an avalanche. Yao and other soldiers felt like an Americans jocks. There wasn’t any real interaction and meaningful experience to justify them following Mulan into battle. Also why did the witch suddenly after seeing Mulan for the first time decides to help her? And pity her? She is meant to be a cold hearless witch right? There wasn’t any back story about her past only maybe 1 dialogue about how she thinks they are the same..which is not convincing...

Develop the story a bit more rather than just giving us a very bland heros journey story. There was barely any struggle for the hero to transform. Mulan nearly died... so now she unleashes her chi? That again doesn’t seem relatable to the audience. Great examples is to watch any Jap anime. How the main characters struggles and actually risks something. The last challenge was also underwhelming. Worst thing of all is that Disney mentioned that they want live movie adaption to be more grounded to reality. In that case please so more research on Chinese history, there was so many things that were wrong. Eg in ancient China the woman couldn’t enter the imperal palace, however at the end of the movie a women was seen introducing Mulan to the emperor. Please do some research becuase this movie feels very disrespectful to the original material as it shows no research has been done.… Expand

Movie that degrades the audience,company that made it and the original movie to such a baffling degree that I am almost certain Disney will ram itself into the ground if they continue on this trend of remaking classic animated movies intoMovie that degrades the audience,company that made it and the original movie to such a baffling degree that I am almost certain Disney will ram itself into the ground if they continue on this trend of remaking classic animated movies into "live action" ones that are confusing, boring to watch and even offensive to some people. with stories that don't feel refined or improved instead they just elude back to the far superior originals and make us feel like we've watching an enhanced version of what we once and most likely still adore,because of flashy graphics but with a harrowing lack of artistic integrity and storytelling that would make any text my 12 yo brother has ever written for his English classes infinitely better and more entertaining than anything Disney has produced in the last 5 years. Only thing saving Disney are these strange and shallow characters we recognise because we saw them already and know countours of their desires and motivations based on previous films. It is a shame that we no longer have a kin with them because of writters utter incompetence to revive/revamp already well established plots. Instead They try to make it more edgier, more mature and subsequently our heroes, princesses, thieves, genies and hell even CGI warthogs with an affinity for farts and the opera go onto these grandour adventures and quests that are supposed to help them find who they are and simultaneously fulfill their magical destiny.
Whilst in reality our protagonists arcs are filled with contrivances because of vague and hollow story lines that demand of them to be so. it will leave us, the audience disappointed at best and just sad at worst . A fake guided crown made out of plastic breaking at the smallest of pressures. This is what Disney has become. Hollow machine of corporate greed shoving these unwanted movies down our throats.… Expand

I’m not saying no one could enjoy this film. I love a good underdog story, and I’m sure people would love seeing a girl beat up all the boys. A good trope of anyone can be respected and accepted if they are true to themselves and others, andI’m not saying no one could enjoy this film. Also a woman can make it In the “mans world” of ancient china - as long as she has mysterious superpowers that make her better than everyone else in the movie combined... The problems are this is so much worse than the original animated version, I wish it didnt share a name: No Dragon mushu, no cricket, no songs, no montages of cutting hair or training. It’s also so boring I’m writing this review while watching (started in the 3rd act After i was getting way too bored). I saw some “critic” reviews being high in the 80s and even 60s (-still way too high). I guess they want some of that Disney money. The main reason I hate this movie is they might blame direct to TV releases as not as successful on the venue, but if it does terribly its because of my 2 other main gripes - its extremely boring, and the writing contrivances are awful. At least they have the Cristina Agulara song at the end.… Expand

Disney just needs to stop recreating live action remakes that completely ruin the point of the original. Cartoon Mulan was a badass. Live action Mulan was a “chosen one” with magical powers that completely discredits the gender equality point of the original. If I wanted to watch a mediocre movie about a character with no special talents or abilities who thrives off of the hard work of others and the magical powers of being the main character, I would just rewatch Harry Potter. While I understand the plot had to be changed to a certain degree for the audience’s interest, since no one wants to watch a literal live recreation of the animated movie (although let’s be honest, none of the live action remakes were wanted in the first place and the more they continue the more it feels like the Disney corporation is just using us all like a cash cow and I swear to god this needs to stop) one way it was changed was by changing the genre of the movie. Which isn’t a bad thing. But this means that there is absolutely no comic relief, mushu (without a doubt the best character) is erased from the scrip along with the cricket, the three dudes at the war camp she becomes best friends with are misogynistic **** and have no redeemable qualities and cute scenes that they do recreate just end up flopping. This tied with the moral of the story now being exclusively that family is important and if you are a girl you can only participate in the war defending your nation if you are magically chosen with chi or qi or whatever and for no other reason than that, this movie becomes absolutely pointless. I among many wanted this movie to be success due to the representation that it would provide for many, but this bastardization just feels like Disney trying to get more and more money from its audience along with into the good grace of China.… Expand

The character build up is missing either because the main actress cannot act or China has forced Disney to cut out absolutely anything that remotely shows a Chinese person to appear weak. It's ok for the protagonist to show fear. Mulan's father says "there is no courage without fear" so where is her fear? Look at this movie's poster because that's her face even when death is in front of her. Even if Mulan was the only movie out this year, she still won't be nominated for best actress.

I continuously see obvious bots or some "I stand by Asians" nonsense posting how great this movie is. Look, this movie is no 10 out of 10 ok. You're saying this is the absolute best movie you have ever seen? It's certainly not a 1, but IT"S DEFINITELY NOT a 10. The 1 is justified because Disney set the price at $30. Say a In-N-Out Burger is good, but at $30, I'd give it a 1/10. That argument about how if you watch it with 3+ people, it's actually cheaper than the theaters. #1, don't lie, you're watching it by yourself #2. it's covid time, not many of us are having gatherings. #3, it's not the theaters.

Please support great movies. Don't give your hard earned money to Disney just because they are using someone with a certain skin color.… Expand

I never saw the original Mulan. My only familiarity with it is the music and a general knowledge of the premise. Without any nostalgic reference point I must say this movie was pretty bad.

The central problem with this film is the lead actress. She is stiff and BORING. Zero charisma. Come to think of it, none of the actors really had anything to draw you to them. Mulan's father drew me in since he is faced with a genuinely tragic situation. The main villain drew me in because of his physicality and intimidating presence. All the other characters just felt like throwaways.

The lead character has motivations, but it feels forced. Because of her lack of emotional energy you just feel like she's going through the motions to move the plot forward. Why should I emotionally invest in a character who seems disinterested in the world beyond some vague sense of "proving herself"?

Another problem with this film is that it is completely joyless. Wasn't there a dragon in the original to add a touch of personality to film? There are attempts at humor, but not much. I'm guessing the director wanted to stay away from that to keep a more serious tone. This was a mistake, in my opinion.

There's also some logical absurdities in the plot and how a lot of the action is resolved. This rarely bothers me in movies (I come to expect that in an action film), but it bothered a few friends I watched it with. Why is Mulan such a great fighter? She clearly never really trained, but the movie implies she has some kind of magical energy (chi)? Alright, that's pretty dumb.

Overall this movie was a mediocre time killer at best. I got a few laughs from cracking jokes at the film with friends, but even that was tough.… Expand
