I'd rate the movie higher if it wasn't so expensive. If it ever gets added to just basic Disney Plus then I'd consider upping it to a 4 or maybe a 5. Looked interesting enough to watch, but my kids got bored and I started to fall asleep. Seemed like "Rise of the Skywalker" mixed with old Mulan in they tried to hard to show shades of the old to mix with the new, but falls very short. A fantasy that has become boring.

a film that gives a new face but that face is totally tiring, the new face leaves this film as something good to watch before going to sleep, so you close your eyes and don’t watch it.

I loved the orginal Mulan, but the changes made to the live action are stripping everything that made the orginal lovable. This is a rare failure of Disney. The plot is very dull, the character acting is also very poor, and the musical performance is also very ordinary. The most important thing is that without Mushu Dragon, this is unacceptable.

The acting was terrible all around and horribly edited. If you want to sum up the movie in one scene, watch the emperor scene right after he gets saved and the ropes get undone by Mulan (close to the end).

So much potential, a real shame. I’ll stick with the classics.… Expand

I find it hard to imagine anyone who can relate to a magical person born with extraordinary unearthly talent far superior than their peers, whos main struggle is to just use their potential. Not learning to get better, not working or training, but to not hold back their physical prowess. This internal struggle of a demigod is sadly not even that well executed of a journey. if this being is so powerful why does another equally powerful shapeshifter need to sacrifice themselves against a measly arrow. makes no sense. donnie yen's character was also the only one who looked like they could actually fight. I was so excited and hopeful after seeing the trailer, but this lacks the spirit and emotion that was so integral to the animated version. ex the decision to take the place of her father was such a powerful moment in the original, but in the modern remake it just happens. so many things "just happen" for the sake of happening. The other live remakes of the Disney films have at least mainly stayed true to the original story with minor changes or additions but the new Mulan is basically a different story all together. There’s virtually no humour in this version of which is a lot of what attracts the audience to the original Mulan film. They definitely shouldn’t have bothered remaking Mulan.… Expand

Yup, gave it a zero. I was so excited for my favourite Disney film to come to life. I knew there were going to be changes and some characters wouldn’t be there, but it went fully dark. I was actually board. More of a action film than anything.

I cannot understand why they changed so much of it. Mulan is already a superhero. She is literally born perfect with magic abilities. No flaws, no problems, and no issues to deal with except for being too awesome as apparently being a superhero just isn't proper for a lady. There really is nothing to this character. She doesn't have to develop or confront any obstacles. She just becomes even more awesome.

The original Mulan was clumsy, free spirited, clever, loving, caring, and loyal to her family. She tried her best to be the daughter that her parents and society wanted her to be, even if it wasn't who she was. The scene in the Match Maker's ceremony gives makes us empathise with her. We know this isn't what she's meant for, but seeing her try and fail makes us want her to succeed in her inevitable adventure. In this abomination they had to invent a sister for her to be the clumsy one (can't have Mulan be not perfect), and when chaos erupts she breaks out the super powers and perfectly catches tea cups with grace, poise and elegance - exactly what the Match Maker is apparently wanting. But she fails because she's too awesome...how does that even make sense?

Anyway, the army comes along and conscripts her father. She talks about it at dinner and her father suddenly turns from this chill encouraging character into a table thumping "back in the kitchen, woman" dude...which makes no sense.

We all know what happens next. Solemn contemplation, a storm brews, lightning crashes, epic music, she takes her father's armour and sword, cuts her hair, and suits up and becomes....wait...no. We get a camera cut and it's done. THE BEST MOST SYMBOLIC, EPIC AND HARD HITTING SCENE IN THE ENTIRE FILM REDUCED TO A 2 SECOND CAMERA TRANSITION.

Honestly at that point it was obvious was we were in for. Do yourselves a favour, just watch the original. There is no life to this movie. There is no emotion, no empathy, no epic swell of satisfaction, no humour. It may be colourful and well shot but it's like sprinkling rainbow sprinkles on a grey cake made out of newspaper.

It's also hard to comment on the lead actress' acting, as I'm not convinced she did any. I felt more emotion in the sand scene between Anakin and Padme in the Star Wars prequels. Remember young girls and women, to be accepted as you are you must be born with superpowers and be perfect from your first breath. You must never fail, you must succeed and be the best at absolutely everything and never have to try. This is the message of this film.… Expand

It's also extremely unethical to take someone's life's work and change the source material with such disrespect. Then, just to make everything so much worse, you add on top of that fan baiting. Fan Baiting is done on purpose to not only stir up controversy for publicity but also serves as a barrier to real criticism and ensures that the show will succeed because if anyone has a different opinion, they will just be labeled as a "racist/sexist/transphobe/etc." and their opinion is ignored. It's a method to make everyone think you're virtuous when really you're just a horrible person spreading hate with anyone who has a different opinion than your own. You act like you're fighting fascism by spreading and using fascism. It's hypocrisy in action.… Expand

Ok so I'm not a fan of the current regime in China. Its full on evil. But this is a film which many good people worked hard on. Well the film is not mulan as we know it. Its not much like the poem and it's even less like the cartoon. Its like ...star wars with the force called chi and some Chinese state propaganda thrown in for good measure. The Dragon is gone too. Apparently Chinese audiences didn't like it but western Americans loved it...So ofcourse China won. I guess the live action Shrek remake will also cut eddie Murphy and donkey Because apparently the chinese regime doesnt like donkeys...or winnie the pooh. The film is average as a film. Its no longer about coming of age or work hard and get good or anything to do with women's plight in China...which under the 1 child rule has been pretty bleak. Its more about being born the right type of Chinese person...So again very Xi JingPing rhetoric and reminiscence of Nazi Germany superman philosophy. Outside of that it looks lovely and sounds fine. Just very average overall and not really for kids. Not sure who this is for except China but apparently China isn't a fan due to the issues it has brought to light in our uncensored free press. In China there has been a media black out. So i found myself asking was it really worth it Disney ? No is the simple answer. This is a shameless greedy cash grab which has failed and cost reputations as well as lives. As a fan of mulan I'm gutted but in 2020...What more can we expect ? Just a cashgrab, the movie lacked the charm the original had. It felt like a $3 offbrand movie. Definitely didn't feel like a disney movie.

Pretty watered down and soulless rendition of a childhood classic 4/10. The rest of the stars are removed for Mulans support of the Xinjiang Muslim concentration camps. Pretty disgusting.

I was very dissatisfied with this film. I loved the classic but this film is just bad. It is bad for both type of audiences the ones who watched the classic and people who are seeing this for the first time. In the classic movie, Mulan goesI was very dissatisfied with this film. I loved the classic but this film is just bad. It is bad for both type of audiences the ones who watched the classic and people who are seeing this for the first time. In the classic movie, Mulan goes from a quirky lovable girl to a confident strong woman who can stand up to anyone. However, in this one, she has the super power of Chi that lets her do gravity deifying stunts (which is more in tune of Bollywood movies), she can master skills faster than anyone else and becomes a very bland character. The comedic element is gone from the movie and replaced with a more serious tone, which is hard to take seriously when the fighting begins some combatant’s just fly into the air or running and doing tricks on the wall. This movies has some pros to it but it's cons far outweigh the pros. Overall I would say If you love the classic don't watch it you would waste $30, your time and be pissed by the end. In addition, for those who are just going to watch it for the first time, you would still waste $30 and your time, but you would not be as butt hurt as the classic lovers.… Expand

It’s a joke.
Ridiculous script, terrible costume & makeup, confusing buildings, poor battleground, and nonsense character setting all make this movie extremely hilarious.

Was expecting the story to be similar to the cartoon, but was disappointed with the direction they took Mulan. Mulan was interesting on how at first she had difficult keeping up, but over time earned the respect of her comrades.

I am not going to extend much more since the film has left me indifferent and the only thing that stands out could be the aesthetic that fulfills a correct soundtrack quite well.

A movie to forget that not even my ten-year-old niece liked.

Boring. Inferior to the original in every way. Seriously don’t waste two hours of your time. Watch the 1998 version and then use the extra 30 minutes to think about how lovely and well done it is.

So there was no need to make a live version. The plot is very simple, there is a bad guy, the hero fails at first to win, then they win at the end with a battle. Pretty simple. They also took out the little dragon. Like that was one of the best parts he was the funny part of the movie. The new one is just not the same or pleasant to watch. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mulan the animation was one of my all time favorite movies and I really wanted this to be great. But this is one hot garbage of a movie. The animation celebrated and portrayed feminism and equality exceptionally well, while this movie got it completely wrong. Reducing Mulan's success to her being born with strong chi is both demeaning and cringy. In the animation, Mulan outperformed all the men in the army because her grit, hard work and determination, she earned the trust and friendship of her peers by proving herself and climbing the pole. She went from a weakling to a physically strong person through the army camp by driving herself to get better. Iconic and crucial moments in the animation such as her cutting her hair, or the emperor saying you bow to no one to Mulan.. removed without any proper replacement.

Don't get me started on the badly CGI pheonix or the shapeshifting witch. To reduce such an iconic and important movie to magical **** is disrespectful. It is embarrassing to say that this is actually worse than Matt Damon's Great Wall.… Expand

The plot wasn't well thought out and the fight scenes were corny. At the beginning, the film seemed like it had potential but ultimately surprises you and goes in a terrible direction. I felt robbed after paying to see this movie.
