Boring and kind of ridiculous. A Disney melodrama with stupid new characters and no real development in the new ones. Bad CGI in some scenes. The only value here resides in the astounding art direction.

Full of contrived cliches
The Disneyfication ruins what could have been a great Kung Fu'esq movie
Decent cinematography and choreography watered down for what the execs think is the target demographic, of which I am not a part of.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Remember that story where someone through effort, cunning and commitment became better than their male counterparts. None of that is in this movie. She’s just born with mystic powers. The Mongolian invasion no longer exists. They’re just 7 dudes riding horses on a personal vendetta against the whole Chinese Empire. Mushu is gone, the 3 funny soldiers? gone. The Emperor goes from not accepting Mulan to naming her general in a span of 30 seconds!! It gets better in the final act, but does not live to what is already been build. A big pile of CHI! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An ill-conceived narrative mess with no artistic integrity, and an insult to Chinese cultural identity
An ill-conceived narrative mess that does not compare well to the 1998 animated Mulan. An insult to Chinese identity because someone decided to make Chinese actors deliver lines in English (to pander to western audience).

In an animation, it is fine to have Chinese characters speak English, because it is a story that does not seek to be "real", like a fairy tale. The audience will not be that bothered. The 1998 animated Mulan is an empowering "fairy tale" story with Chinese elements inspired by a folklore ballad.

When Disney decided to do a live action remake with production design that seems to be aiming for authenticity, the game changes. It is just wrong to force Chinese Actors that can speak Mandarin, to deliver lines (emotion) in English. Language is integral to one's way of thinking, one's personal identity, one's cultural heritage and social image. Forcing Chinese actors to speak English, like they don't have their own perfectly fine full-functioning language that is just as full of nuance and complex communication, is the Ultimate Disrespect to Chinese culture.

If they wanted 'authenticity' and to pander to Chinese audience, they should have done this live action remake in Mandarin, and dubbed into English (or subtitled) for western audience, and spent some money hiring Chinese scriptwriter, production staff, who will know the culture intrinsically. The acting would be better if the actors were allowed to use their native language. And from an authenticity viewpoint, it is odd to have a 'realistic' historical folklore Chinese drama in spoken English.

From the pander-to-the-western-audience viewpoint, they would have done better to do a shot-by-shot live remake, with all the music and beloved characters of the animated classic.

Watch that if you want a genuinely well made movie. This Mulan(2020) proves that in order to be strong a woman, she must have mythical powers that heighten her to the status of god and that the only weakness anyone should have is hiding your power. Overall the movie is terrible, not even trying to compare to the original animation.
The entire movie gives me a feeling of a lack of money during production. For example, in Mulan's home, the original animation featured crowd street include different style animal and buildings, but in this version of Mulan, only one building exists and not lots of people live there(imagine there only a handful of people live there how can you show that Mulan has been seen differently in the overall culture.) and both in the training camp and fighting in the city you also don't see many people exist, although in the animation and this version the main character are those five people but at least show the rest of the army in a reasonable size. The central city is also a joke. I cannot even call it a city, it more like a middle-size countryside, and even in such a small set up, Mulan cannot even fight in there. They have to go to a smaller location to fight. Although they have Donnie yen in the cast roll, why choose him when you do not even have any legit fight scene. The music part is even worse. It feels so uncomfortable as you do not get to hear even one complete theme music. Every background music feels incomplete. I cannot even describe the feeling in my words(maybe you have to watch it to feel how horrible it is). The art design and the script, in my opinion, are the only two things worth looking at, but I guess both of them you have already seen in the trailer.

2) Women can only excel if they are better at "man things" than men

4) Marginalized people only have value if they die for the status quo

She did well, but isn't really suitable for the role as she's too dainty, soft-spoken and unable to reach the lofty heights of a true pugilist.

Powers and skills are too fantasy-like for movie to have a realistic feel. LOL

I fell asleep in the middle of the movie,Mulan 2020 is mediocre. It's too slow paced, the characters are unengaging, some questionable directing choices were made, and there are some editing hiccups here and there if you care to notice them. I fell asleep in the middle of the movie, and that is a very bad sign considering I've stayed wide awake for 3-hour epics like Lord of the Rings and The Avengers. It's a shame the movie isn't a musical like the animated version, because it would've filled in the gaps much better in a movie that otherwise feels way too long. There's a few interesting scenes here and there, but it's not enough to hold the movie up from its flaws. As for the ridiculous $30 on top of a subscription, that alone would warrant this movie to be a 3 or below. But I want to be fair and judge the movie for what it is and not the bad corporate decisions behind it. Unfortunately it's still an unremarkable movie. Expand

However, unfortunately, I think it has far more negatives going for it than positives I’m afraid (especially since my 6-year-old was so excited to watch it, but wound up walking away in the first 10 minutes).

To start, this new "Mulan" is an entirely different story from the 1998 Disney animated classic or even the 6th Century Ballad of Mulan. Mulan was a heroic story of a young girl in Ancient China who, in order to bring honor and pride to her family, risked death and torture to keep her father safe. Taking her father's place in the war to save his life. She overcame obstacles that men, bigger and stronger then she could not. It never overshadowed or undermined men. It was a story of leadership, and putting the needs of others before your own. A story of doing the right thing, no matter the personal cost. In the end she tries to offer to her father the treasures she got from the emperor as gift to bring honor to their family only to find out that she herself was more precious to him than anything else. All while having a positive message about both sexes doing what was needed to be done. It’s a story beloved by people of all ages and backgrounds. 2020's Mulan is more of a reimagined historical documentary than an actual Disney live-action adaptation. It's lost the magic that made it Disney. No heartfelt positive message. No comedy. No light-hearted interactions. No songs. No animal sidekicks. No Bisexual Le Shang. It's just a story about a historical Chinese figure, turned Mary Sue, being exceedingly monotone, uptight, and strict throughout a war who will fulfill her duty and "bring honor to us all” (China) by being a one-woman wrecking ball. It's obvious the movie tries exceedingly hard to be “realistic” in multiple aspects of the film. However, this Mulan was born with incredible Chi and godly natural talent and abilities, was a complete badbutt from the start, the fact that there is magic and sorcery in the film, and unnatural acrobatics that would absolutely require assisted rigging say otherwise. Especially since the Green Screen and CGI in this film are painfully obvious. Other than that, the movie tends to be slow-moving with dry and stale interactions from the cast. There are many awkward interactions that feel out of place.

Lastly, I have to mention all of the negative publicity and acts behind this film and during production of it. Especially the human rights crimes that were taking place in Xinjiang were video footage of hundreds of Uighur prisoners were blindfolded, shackled, and shoved into busses headed for internment camps. The actress portraying Mulan, Yifei Liu, has been very public about siding against freedom and the people of Hong Kong by supporting the Hong Kong Police cracking down on protests. In the final credits of the film, Disney offers “special thanks” to eight government entities in Xinjiang where several “re-education” camps have been documented. The film also expresses thanks to the “Publicity Department of CPC Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomy Region Committee,” the Chinese Communist Party’s Propaganda Department in Xinjiang. Finally, just as a last show of toxicity surrounding this film, the film crew have allegedly filed a complaint regarding the films diversity issues and for being forced to take DNA tests to prove their "Asianness" because there have been complaints that the film is too "White" despite having an all-Asian cast. *Sighs*…Sorry, but Disney absolutely missed the mark. I don't think I'll be seeing this one again and I will be informing the rest of my family and friends about it. 2020’s Mulan looks like it’s been turned into a glorified propaganda piece for China. #Disney #WaltDisneyStudios #Mulan #BoycottMulan #Dishonor

Mulan is the latest Disney live-action remake of their 1998 movie of the same name. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic which forced theatres to shut down, The Walt Disney Company have decided to release Mulan via Disney+ for a premium fee while other countries will have theatrical release where the local theatres have been slowly reopened.

Set in Imperial China, Hua Mulan (Yifei) is an adventurous and active girl much to her parents’ disappointment who had hope to find her a good husband. Somewhere in the Imperial outpost to the north, Rouran warriors led by Bori Khan (Lee) attack the outpost with the help of a powerful and shapeshifter witch named Xian Niang (played by Gong Li).

Because of the attack, the Emperor of China (played by Jet Li) decree that every family in the country must contribute one man to fight against the invaders. Unfortunately for the Hua family, Mulan does not have any brothers which means her father, who is a former soldier in the Imperial Army, must contribute himself to fight in the war. Due to her father’s ailing health and may not survive the war, Mulan decide to take her father’s place as soldier and sneak out of her home at night along with her father’s sword and armour.

Disguising herself as a man and called herself Hua Jun, she joins the Imperial Army under the command of Commander Tung (Yen) where she trains with the other conscripts to prepare for the upcoming war without exposing herself as a woman.

Unlike last year’s Aladdin and The Lion King live-action remakes, Mulan is not a full adaptation of its animated movie as there are some changes in this movie. Despite the changes, the basic plot of the movie still remains the same as its original counterpart and easy to follow. While Mushu does not appear in this movie and no singing songs moments, it really does make sense for not to be in this movie is because it would have been unrealistic given the direction of this movie.

For the performance of the cast, everyone has done a great job especially Liu Yifei and Donnie Yen. However, some of the characters didn’t really have much character development which made them easily forgettable later on. As for Gong Li’s character, I felt her character wasn’t really developed well and her character’s purpose was only to serve as the evil counterpart to Mulan.

While this movie cannot be compared to 2009’s Mulan: Rise of a Warrior, which is a Chinese production and with more realistic and darker tone, this movie is still watchable on its own and it is meant for family and children. Same goes to the original animated movie. Whichever one is better is up for a debate. If you have seen the original animated movie and the 2009 movie, give this movie a shot.

the graphics are made at a high enough level, the acting has a good color, each character is sufficiently disclosed and has its own story, of course, there are some drawbacks, but there is not a single film that would be without drawbacks.
In the end, I want to say that this film will grow in the eyes of people who like to think, and not just watch; also, this film will give an impetus to many to develop and achieve their goals, despite the opinion of society.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, “BORING”. You don’t even compare it to our beloved 1998 animated Mulan, this movie is a meal without salt aka tasteless. Being an Asian, who was born and raised in Asia, I grew up watching a lot of Chinese movies like this and trust me, there are a lot of great Kung Fu movies with way better production and better storyline. This is just an ordinary Kung Fu movie which is PUSHED to be Mulan because they know we all love the animated version so they could make money out of it. Talking about the production, editing was terrible. Several scenes were annoyingly obvious that they shot in a small studio and lightings were really bad. And those fireworks at the end looked fake af. Seriously tho! Gong Li role was unnecessary for the movie and she died with no reason (Awww... poor Gong Li). I mean if you want to add a new role, why don’t you just make it awesome since Gong Li is a great actress and she can play any role you want really. Last but not least, they were trying to creat a “safe work place” like, Mulan can’t fall in love with her Commanding officer (Li Shang in animated version) because producer or director is supporting “Me Too Movement” so it is inappropriate!? TF gurl! You lost your god damn mind. Why can’t you just leave your political opinions out of this movie? No one was pushed to fall in love with a commander like the way you pushed this typical kung fu movie to be Mulan. As a Disney fan myself, I didn’t feel anything Disney and It really is a huge disappointment. Mulan is an admiring and inspiring Disney princess who risked her own life to save her family and at the end, she saved the whole China but this version didn’t sell me anything to inspire at all. I must say it is an emotionless movie. Mic drop! Expand

Only thing saving Disney are these strange and shallow characters we recognise because we saw them already and know countours of their desires and motivations based on previous films. It is a shame that we no longer have a kin with them because of writters utter incompetence to revive/revamp already well established plots. Instead They try to make it more edgier, more mature and subsequently our heroes, princesses, thieves, genies and hell even CGI warthogs with an affinity for farts and the opera go onto these grandour adventures and quests that are supposed to help them find who they are and simultaneously fulfill their magical destiny.
Whilst in reality our protagonists arcs are filled with contrivances because of vague and hollow story lines that demand of them to be so. it will leave us, the audience disappointed at best and just sad at worst . A fake guided crown made out of plastic breaking at the smallest of pressures. This is what Disney has become. Hollow machine of corporate greed shoving these unwanted movies down our throats.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Disney please go back to basic because Mulan 2020 is absolutely crap. What happened to characters that were unique and had substance? Develop your characters so that their actions makes sense. Mulan was portrayed as a hero with no real weakness, no real substance. I understand you want to push strong female characters but the way that it was done with chi that makes her super human is very.... uncreative. And that essentially create a template hero who has no substance or personality that the audience can relate to. The original movie she was a hero not because of strength but she was smart. How in the original she figured out how to climb the pole with technique rather then pure strength. Or how she repelled the attack on snow mounted with an avalanche. Yao and other soldiers felt like an Americans jocks. There wasn’t any real interaction and meaningful experience to justify them following Mulan into battle. Also why did the witch suddenly after seeing Mulan for the first time decides to help her? And pity her? She is meant to be a cold hearless witch right? There wasn’t any back story about her past only maybe 1 dialogue about how she thinks they are the same..which is not convincing...

Develop the story a bit more rather than just giving us a very bland heros journey story. There was barely any struggle for the hero to transform. Mulan nearly died... so now she unleashes her chi? That again doesn’t seem relatable to the audience. Great examples is to watch any Jap anime. How the main characters struggles and actually risks something. The last challenge was also underwhelming. Worst thing of all is that Disney mentioned that they want live movie adaption to be more grounded to reality. In that case please so more research on Chinese history, there was so many things that were wrong. Eg in ancient China the woman couldn’t enter the imperal palace, however at the end of the movie a women was seen introducing Mulan to the emperor. Please do some research becuase this movie feels very disrespectful to the original material as it shows no research has been done.

In the animation Mulan have very conflicting thoughts with the emperor but still saves him because she sees him as human beings. This shows her capable of making her own decision, this is honor. In the movie she does this because it is "the honor way to serve the kingdom", this is not honor, this is just teaching children that if you obey the rule you will be honored, this is not honor, this is propaganda. I don't know why people like to eat this that the avengers will s**t, then Mulan. People will gobble up everything and ask for more (who put 10 for this movie)
Added unnecessary superpowers like a superman (how trivial), added a second villain to a woman in order not to offend "gender justice" (but she is ABSOLUTELY not superfluous here)
In addition, humor disappeared, a cricket, a dragon and three male characters (fat, long and stupid) disappeared, the love line disappeared.
Everything was cut out and the focus was only on Mulan.
a faceless movie about a miracle woman, okay if they made it interesting, but it's mediocre.
The saddest thing is that I knew it was going to be a bad movie, but I had hope. It is perceived as a cheap Indian movie. it is deceiving the audience who wanted to watch it because of their love for the original 1998 fairy tale.
this is also a fairy tale for 0+ but in 2020 it feels fake. I'm too lazy to write about the sins of this film. I'm crying. and after all, once upon a time Disney shot good cartoons ...

While I give Mulan some credit for trying to do something different (whereas a lot of prior Disney remakes just rehashed the same story beats again and again), the lack of music, character, humor, and emotion leaves the film rather hollow. While I give Mulan some credit for trying to do something different (whereas a lot of prior Disney remakes just rehashed the same story beats again and again), the lack of music, character, humor, and emotion leaves the film rather hollow. The original was full of life and spirit, while this film goes for a gritty and rather soulless approach, which is not what audiences in America asked for. Maybe Chinese audiences did (since this film was clearly made to pander to them), but even then from what I heard they loved the songs, Li Shang, and Mushu too, who are both absent in this film. I appreciate Disney trying to actually make notable changes to its remakes for once, but this is just a boring slog of a movie that lacks any major enjoyment. Expand

Nearly every aspect of this movie is bad, and I am sure this will take home at least one Razzie. Just another movie that proves the access media will shill at the drop of a hat. The performances were obviously forced as if they realized early in the filming that there was zero substance, no heart, and absolutely lacked authenticity. They need to remake this...again.
