This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Waste of money. There are so many other Asian Mulan remakes that put this movie to shame. Disney just needs to stop recreating live action remakes that completely ruin the point of the original. Cartoon Mulan was a badass. Live action Mulan was a “chosen one” with magical powers that completely discredits the gender equality point of the original. If I wanted to watch a mediocre movie about a character with no special talents or abilities who thrives off of the hard work of others and the magical powers of being the main character, I would just rewatch Harry Potter. While I understand the plot had to be changed to a certain degree for the audience’s interest, since no one wants to watch a literal live recreation of the animated movie (although let’s be honest, none of the live action remakes were wanted in the first place and the more they continue the more it feels like the Disney corporation is just using us all like a cash cow and I swear to god this needs to stop) one way it was changed was by changing the genre of the movie. Which isn’t a bad thing. But this means that there is absolutely no comic relief, mushu (without a doubt the best character) is erased from the scrip along with the cricket, the three dudes at the war camp she becomes best friends with are misogynistic **** and have no redeemable qualities and cute scenes that they do recreate just end up flopping. This tied with the moral of the story now being exclusively that family is important and if you are a girl you can only participate in the war defending your nation if you are magically chosen with chi or qi or whatever and for no other reason than that, this movie becomes absolutely pointless. I among many wanted this movie to be success due to the representation that it would provide for many, but this bastardization just feels like Disney trying to get more and more money from its audience along with into the good grace of China. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

If you want to support HK, go to social media not a movie rating website I think most Disney movie are falling into a serious problem about "creating strong female characters".(star wars, frozen, captain marvel, etc)
I'd loved to see female characters pop up on the big screen, however not Disney's formula. All four movie (mulan, star wars, frozen, captain marvel) has its main character "gifted" with power, however, there is always a evil male character telling them they needs to be "that good girl" in their thoughts. Then at certain point, the fema character realized she needs no one and unleashed the inner power. The problem here is, there is no reason for them to change, and since they are "gifted", they can suddenly become super powered like turning on a switch, which makes the story mary sue.

How our kids can relate on such story, when the movie is trying to tell them you can only be a hero when you are gifted.

The original mulan is a very good movie.

Maybe the moralizing tone of it in the end, is a bit much. The action is not at the level of Hero, or Crouching Dragons but it's well done and filmed. The actors are amazing and they are solid in their roles. Their was a nice sobriety about it. The music was catchy. Some things are very Disney like: no blood, no display of injuries, not much expositions to the world of men. All this for the ratings. For young people that might pass, for adults, it's a hard swallow. I give it 70% because of the acting and good actions. This isn't worth 30-40$, really nothing about movie does. Wait for it in Cinema or when the price makes more sens. But I do recommend to go see it, it's not a bad movie. Expand

This Mulan 2020, shows great empowerment for women which many needs, love for family, and self confrontations and reflections. It focuses not on the romance, few in character development but more on standing firm to what you believe is your right, and helping individuals go to the right path. Many I think will hate on this movie, but I strongly suggest you watch the movie first and be the judge. Mulan 1998 focused more on character development, while Mulan 2020 doxused more on Expand

It took me a minute to wrap my head around the martial arts fantasy style (where the laws of physics don't apply), but once I embraced it I loved this film. It had heart and was powerful. I loved the very stylized cinematography and the bold visuals. I loved the variation of the story and the foil that Mulan found in the character of Xianniang. Those who loved the original (as I did) will find there are many small homages to it throughout, expertly woven in with the story in an organic way. If you are able to embrace this film for what it is instead of what you think you want it to be (especially those of you wanting Eddie Murphy in a dragon suit) it is beautiful and moving. Expand

In Mulan, I see a love letter to China from the West. Not only does the movie cross cultural divides, but racial and political ones as well. Meanwhile, two hashtags are trending, #BoycottMulan and #MilkTeaAlliance, attributed to Liu YiFei'sIn Mulan, I see a love letter to China from the West. Not only does the movie cross cultural divides, but racial and political ones as well. Meanwhile, two hashtags are trending, #BoycottMulan and #MilkTeaAlliance, attributed to Liu YiFei's support for the Hong Kong police, and China's encroachment upon its smaller neighbors. In effect, support for this movie is tantamount to support for the CCP and its policies.

I then took time to consider the virtues highlighted in the movie. "Loyalty to country" is one shared between the US and China. Additionally, each country is experiencing its share of demonstrations, not to mention detention camps. Loyalty to country may take the form of protest, with the aims of helping the country take steps towards a more just society. In Mulan, I see a figure who takes stock of the situation then breaks the rules in order to serve the greater good, not a staunch nationalist who toes the party line.

Another virtue highlighted is "truth." This is the Trojan horse that can be directed at either system of government. The truth is that both countries are ruled by wealthy elites, even as both aspire to be republics. Without acknowledging the corruption of both systems, the ideals of neither state will be fully realized, a truth similar to the one arrived by Mulan on her own journey.

In short, boycott Huawei, not diplomatic tentpoles like Mulan. Even if it is a "Panda Express" interpretation of the revered folk hero, it is an improved approximation. As symbolic gestures go, this offers hope for improved relations between the countries. There is more to be found in common within our cultures, virtues, not to mention shortcomings, esp. with globalization intertwining us closer each day.

Hua Mulan is a Chinese legend first and not an animation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hua_Mulan.
So Mushu was added in the animation to please us, he wasn't there in the first place.
Truth be told, it's a good Chinese movie. It doesn't follow the Hollywood convention of storytelling so it's not well adapted to us, so we need to be open-minded to another style to appreciate it. (of course we don't have to and can just hate it)
Is it perfect? Well, which movie is?
If you go see this movie, thinking that Walt Disney's version of Mulan is the source of truth, you're bound to be disappointed, because it's closer to the original legend.
All that being said, it's indeed censored, because to my understanding the legend is much more bloody and would be ill-advised for children... which are a great part of the target audience I believe.

A poetic journey of epic & emotional proportions, fueled with a profound and pure humanity, and with a subtext that is gonna resonate with numerous people all over the world ...

First, the photography and all the visual language that accompanies you from beginning to end, are a true delight for the eyes ... A majestic fresco, with a color treatment that highlights each & every shot. Yes, the photography is really striking and can't leave you insensible. Also, the music inhabitates every chapter with an immense grace, and accompanies this emotional journey alongside Mulan in the most grandiose way !

The screenplay keeps the same main beats as the original animated version, but upgrades the storyline as a whole, with more subtlety and depth ... Yifei Liu has a magnetic presence and transmits us a lot of emotions through her so expressive eyes ...

Of course, the choregraphies and the staging also have a very finely artistic language, which flows like a smooth dance, throughout the movie ... Obviously there are some striking scenes and images that nicely punctuate the adventure and participate to make it evolve into an ever more epic & emotional way.

Mulan's interactions with each character, are a big strenght of the movie, they all are a step and a deciding element in her evolution as a woman & hero, from the very first scene up until the very last scene.

A beautiful movie, on many levels.

Despise Mulan gender and the struggle of a women place during society, Mulan work hard and recollected herself to stay true to herself against the odd. Mulan was loyal, brave, and truth not just for herself but those that she care and love. It is great that the dragon was not in this film, no need of comedy. Comedy will destroy the real message of Mulan. I also like how there is no need of romance. Romance will blurred the message of Mulan value. Pathos and logos: responsibilities, respect, and families value.

It felt like its own film while also having feelings very similar to the original. Having been excited about this movie for a long time, I waited all the way to midnight just to watch it release on Disney+. I then proceeded to immediately love it. The acting is fantastic, the visuals are astounding, the action sequences are so cool to watch and the overall story is still incredibly moving. It stands well on its own to the point where the lack of Mushu and the songs (though some songs do appear in the score of the film in several scenes) isn't really noticed. While I do have a lot of love and respect for the original, this new Mulan stands on its own and I love it maybe even as much as its animated predecessor. It was very much worth the money spent and way better than these reviews give it credit for. What a wonderful film. Thank you Disney for sharing this new adaptation of Mulan with the world, I am very grateful. Expand

Great Disney remake. Heavy on the camp, and incorporates elements of the Asian filmmaking tradition of entertainingly overdone fighting/drama.

Then I discovered that most user ratings were politically motivated, and nothing but anti-china bots, with nonsensical reasons to make this movie look bad. In that regard they failed their purpose, because its free publicity and it made me actually wanting to see the movie even more.

After watching the movie myself, I can truly say it was beautifully made! The movie had good build up, majestically filmed. Yifei as Mulan was charismatic and her charms added depth to the character Mulan. She sometimes speaks volumes without saying anything, and when she does say something its meaningful, those are rare qualities of an actor.

At times it gave me goosebumps to finally see a live action version of Mulan, I have to admit I had to wipe some occasional tears away throughout the movie.

Mulans companions were funny and their camaraderie was heartfelt.

Fun fact: Honghui was historically the love interest of Mulan, not Shang Li from the animated movie ;-)

Even though without the musical songs that made the animated version popular, but there were enough references to the animation throughout the movie that made it satisfying watch and did honor to the animated version.

All the actors were great and solid, especially the father played by Tzi Ma was convincing as a caring and inspirational father to Mulan in such a short timespan of character development.

Sad fact: Historically Mulan fought a war campaign of 12 years. She never did get to see her father again, because when she got home her father already died of old age. Traumatized by warfare, Mulan never became her old self, she got depressed and committed suicide, hoping she could reunite with her father in the afterlife being that carefree loving daughter again....

The encounter with the Witch (Xianniang) played by Gong Li was superbly done. I think the witch might even have been a metaphor for Mulans inner fears. It was so poetically well executed.

I am glad Jetli got to do some of his last few action sequences, as Jetli is suffering from returning illnesses, the reason why he doesn't do much action nowadays.

Bori Khans character is the equivalent of Shan Yu in the animated version, and is in the live action more fleshed out as to what his motivations were for attacking the kingdom, that was a nice touch.

Also nice references to chinese Wuxia genre, where lifeforce and chi are prominent for martial art masters.

For the people that missed Mushu, there is a reference of a phoenix though that helped Mulan, and in chinese folklore phoenix represents a woman.

I recommend this movie highly for the fans of the original animation and for people who are new to the story of Mulan.

For me it was A well worthy tribute to both the legendary chinese folklore story Mulan aswell as the original disney animated version!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
Soy mujer y me menosprecian.

This movie just wasn't necessary. It happened but it didn't need to. Everything was kind of blah and it didn't really have any heart to it.
The only good thing was the cinematography, which looked really nice. It was fine enough to sit through once or half-watch but I wouldn't want to do that again.
I appreciated that it was set in China with all Chinese actors it it was also annoying that they spoke English. Like… you almost had it.
Also, that makes it clear that it was just an attempt to make more money. The story of Mulan is always great so the remake wasn't really necessary since it's the same plot. All the signs point towards cash grab.
Also, the special effects were really bad and just didn't seem to fit.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Niki Caro simply destroyed the issues of the original Mulan movie. Attempting to rewrite the story was praiseworthy but man, there are some subjects and scenes you just can't miss. According to the huge feminism movement our societies are dealing with, the Mulan movie should have been the perfect place to transmit deep messages and to develop strong points of view. Instead of this we face a Mulan endowed with supernatural powers (the still unexplained Chi thing), hesitating to reveal them or not. The movie kind of try to address the problem of omnipresence of honour in men living in Medieval China but until the end the father of Mulan (who represents it) stands his ground and eventually never questions things the way they deeply are. Instead of this we receive a cold and superficial message about the importance of familiy. Nothing in the status of any woman in the movie changed from the beginning to the end. When all this thing ends you feel like you wasted your time for some childish random movie without any second lecture as an adult. The heroin is impossible to understand, the action scenes are jerky and unepic, there is an unexplained presece of some meaningless phenix, characters are just caricatures of themselves, and above everything feminity is a totally muted subject. A good point is that the landscapes are wonderful. Still a mess. Expand

Also a woman can make it In the “mans world” of ancient china - as long as she has mysterious superpowers that make her better than everyone else in the movie combined... The problems are this is so much worse than the original animated version, I wish it didnt share a name: No Dragon mushu, no cricket, no songs, no montages of cutting hair or training. It’s also so boring I’m writing this review while watching (started in the 3rd act After i was getting way too bored). I saw some “critic” reviews being high in the 80s and even 60s (-still way too high). I guess they want some of that Disney money. The main reason I hate this movie is they might blame direct to TV releases as not as successful on the venue, but if it does terribly its because of my 2 other main gripes - its extremely boring, and the writing contrivances are awful. At least they have the Cristina Agulara song at the end. Expand

I never saw the original Mulan. My only familiarity with it is the music and a general knowledge of the premise. Without any nostalgic reference point I must say this movie was pretty bad.

The central problem with this film is the lead actress. She is stiff and BORING. Zero charisma. Come to think of it, none of the actors really had anything to draw you to them. Mulan's father drew me in since he is faced with a genuinely tragic situation. The main villain drew me in because of his physicality and intimidating presence. All the other characters just felt like throwaways.

The lead character has motivations, but it feels forced. Because of her lack of emotional energy you just feel like she's going through the motions to move the plot forward. Why should I emotionally invest in a character who seems disinterested in the world beyond some vague sense of "proving herself"?

Another problem with this film is that it is completely joyless. Wasn't there a dragon in the original to add a touch of personality to film? There are attempts at humor, but not much. I'm guessing the director wanted to stay away from that to keep a more serious tone. This was a mistake, in my opinion.

There's also some logical absurdities in the plot and how a lot of the action is resolved. This rarely bothers me in movies (I come to expect that in an action film), but it bothered a few friends I watched it with. Why is Mulan such a great fighter? She clearly never really trained, but the movie implies she has some kind of magical energy (chi)? Alright, that's pretty dumb.

Overall this movie was a mediocre time killer at best. I got a few laughs from cracking jokes at the film with friends, but even that was tough.

Instead: 'be born special, or be useless'. As a women in China I'd find this film rather discouraging than encouraging.

Introduction of Chi was probably the most stupid idea I encountered in movies ever. It's insane how absolutely no one in Disney thought 'Do we really want to make Mulan a second Superman'? That's NOT what old Mulan was about. If I wanted to get something like this I'd go and watch superheroes movies (new Mulan is considerably one, sadly).

About Mushu. I was told that new Mulan will focus more on realism. Instead it got even less realistic. Chi, Witches, wall-running enemies,VERY unrealistic fights. The last fight was so unrealistic and in fact terrible that I regret watching Mulan even more. It's the 'I'm the good guy so I beat the bad guy without any effort' kind of fight. It also amazes me how many critics seem to completely ignore what new Mulan did wrong. Plot (it's flattened old Mulan's plot, without any depth in it, also often unrealistic with tons of plot armour), acting (main character doesn't know what emotions are, or atleast it feels so),character development (or lack of it), visuals (often felt very unrealistic. For a 200 million $ budget it shouldn't be a thing). The only part I found decent/good was music. Maybe it was actually really good, but the rest of the film could have overshadowed it with its awfulness for me.

I'm usually rating films higher than most people do, but in this case I feel like Disney just spit in my face. They didn't even try to make this movie reasonable, it's a clear money grab. 'People see Mulan, they'll buy it'~~ probably someone in Disney.

I'm sad that I have to say that, but I'd rather watch 'The Great Wall' again over Mulan. New Mulan is probably the most forgettable film I;ve ever watched. I'd really like it to be a good movie, but it's just not.

2/10 because it actually had some decent parts. Still wouldn't recommend this to anyone though, especially for old Mulan fans.

It was so bad and made absolutely no sense. The dialogue was so clunky and just awful. The movie is all around inconsistent. It was so bad the suspense filled moments were laughable because it was so bad it was funny.

Everything about this movie was terrible. No mushu, no songs and it’s like they decided to make and entire new movie and just call it Mulan when it’s nothing like the original. Everything about the movie was bad including the graphics
