This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good Guys: So here's the plan. We're going to face them head on, instead of going around, even though it would be infinitely easier to go around. Then, we'll take over the city and not worry at all about the hundreds of still-living bad guys that are slightly delayed by the rocks we left in our wake.

Bad Guys: So, here's the plan. We're going to give everyone guns, except the guys hanging from posts that are going to get closest to the people we want to kill.

Maybe I'm a pain in the ass, but it's this kind of stuff that really takes me out of a film. You create this whole beautiful, fictional world and then make the inhabitants of that world borderline retarded. You can do better.

If you make a conscious decision to turn your brain off, there's enough here to keep you mildly entertained. But there are definitely better alternatives.

Mad Max II remains one of my favourite films of all time but Fury Road is little more than an extravagant remake of the final break-out scene of the second movie. This has precious little plot and no character development whatsoever. OK, so it's an action adventure but eventually it just becomes action without an adventure. Its predecessor, made for circa $2 million in 1981, was so much more – a modern-day allegory, frightening, funny, and exciting as well. Expand

Did critics lose their mind, got paid off, or is this just the time of 'anything goes'? The initial Mad Max was a camp-ish B movie, which unexpectedly struck a cord with the Zeitgeist of the time -- this is a souped-up B movie on steroids, which works if that's your thing, but WHY these insane reviews?!? I guess these people have never read comic books aka graphic novels?! Or they got paid off.... Expand

If you feel that character, plot, and emotionalHave you ever seen a chase scene in an action movie and thought to yourself, 'WOW! I really wish this chase scene could be two hours long!' If so, Mad Max: Fury Road is your kind of movie. If you feel that character, plot, and emotional resonance are for sissies, then this is also a movie tailor-made for your tastes. If the thought of Michael Bay directing a mashup of Fast & Furious/Waterworld makes your sphincter tighten in anticipation, then you, my friend, have found home.

Despite some pretty impressively imagined nonsensical post-apocalyptic evil (women being milked for sustenance, breeding harems, deformed peasants withering away in the desert) and ridiculous metalhead spank bank fantasies (flamethrower guitar mutant strapped to amps strapped to a car, I'm lookin' at you) this movie is pretty uninspired.

It does, however, have fantastic camera work in some places. Certain shots are beautifully composed, ranging from "hey that was neat," to "oh wow." There is a certain black/white purple/blue night scene that is particularly beautiful. But it isn't enough to save this wreck of a movie. It gets a 5 for me because of the visual aesthetic, which would have earned a 10 if they had tried to put just a little bit of meat on the bone they dangled in front of us.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Admittedly late to the game here, but I honestly can't see where all these 10s and 100s come from. At 70, I guess George had one more Mad Max episode left in home, but this was nothing more than a an utterly incomprehensible wild romp. Fury Road is nothing more than a video game brought to the screen with its threadbare plot, not to mention clothing on our five fetching damsels in distress, on which the plot loosely hinges like their chastity belts. What little story there is might be seen as poetic in a post-apocalyptic sort of way. I have to hand it to Charlize Theron for trying to rise above the horribly malevolent nature of this film and give us some sense of hope in the arid violent future George Miller imagines. However, even she couldn't save this film from itself. There were some moments of dark humor, such as the aging biker chic gang, the last to hold onto the seeds of a Utopian dreamworld. The only suspense was whether this green world still existed, but apparently the only thing left was one desolate tree that didn't look strong enough to pull a dune buggy much less a war rig out of the quagmire. I guess it had very deep roots. It's just an inglorious ride through the Australian outback with some wild-eyed visual effects along the way, as if George has been dabbling in magic mushrooms. It's fun to a point, but the sad part is you really don't care what happens to anyone in this movie. Expand

This movie has some of the most amazing action sequences i have seen in a movie (period), it's mostly practical effects which is awesome, the stunts are great, the explosions are real...but sadly the writing is GARBAGE..The story is basicaly let's go from point A to point B and then from point B to point A again. Of course if you don't mind the mediocre writing you will fully enjoy this movie, otherwise it's just a 2 hour driving destruction porn but truly masterfully made from the original creator of the series. :) Expand

First off, Mad Max is a mute passenger in his own film, for a good part of it. That just isn't what I go to see a Mad Max film for. Then it's the baddies. They're simply not all that bad. The look and act menacing, but it's not backed up by deeds, so it is difficult to see them as truly frightening. The idea to give ideology to the lesser minions, to humanise them, is pretty pointless and ultimately distracting. Am I supposed to hate and fear these people or have a special place in my heart for them? It just doesn't work. When we run into Hell's Grannies (tm) toward the end of the film, it just stretches credibility. It's just not what you would find in a post-apocalyptic world. Once again, talk and bravado and no action to back it up, on top of the lack of credibility. Then the ending, which I won't spoil. Why? Why them? Why are they the ones? It makes no sense. Then the final problem I mention, there is the problem of motivation for the female hero (and Max for that matter). Why is she doing what she is doing? She has no stake in it as can be seen. In a world like this, for someone to stick their neck out purely to help others lacks credibility. In Mad Max 2 for example, the selfish motives of Max are painstakingly established. Take note, filmmakers. There are other minor problems: wasting ammunition with machine guns. MM2 clearly establishes that there are guns around, but ammunition is very hard to come by. Then there are some cartoon physics involving firebombs. Expand

The scenario is set mysteriously with the protagonist hunted by his past, making the movie very promising, when he arrives to the city it’s presented the context of this post-apocalyptic world ruled by a tyrant; however when they get to the road the whole thing falls apart. The plot is meaningless, simple and at one point becomes incoherent; the worst thing is that George Miller tries to hide it with an opulent artillery of explosions. It’s true that action cinema is all about that, but what makes an action movie stand out from the rest is the thing that sustains the significance of the explosions and fights. Mad Max is indisputably a technical achievement, highlighting the make-up; this and Charlize Theron are definitely the only good items in the feature. Expand

Anybody could walk away for 10-20 minutes coming right back and this story will be in the same place that they left it, not missing anything at all. Nothing changes in the 2hrs of movie, it is that same 5 minute plot rehashed for a whole 2 hous. Starts somewhere, then ending in exactly that same place, doing a big circle that has absolutely no filler inbetween. I wouldn't have minded if there was something vaguley different going from one-minute on to the next, there wasn't anything at all.

The action is that 3d splatter CGI, constantly repeated, same fires, same person who looks the same at being shot, another unroad worthy vechile getting junked. The mutants and bandits are all mostly identical apart from the rulers, who have no personality they are mutated so they must be evil. Max also had no personality, no backstory, no introduction. The electric guitar was pointlessly stupid.

Gimme a break. There is a reason why these people where nuked. A middle of the road to no where action film.

Fantastic movie according to most people, kind of crappy not function mess according to others.

Why the artistic spin in the middle of the movie? We switch rock music, explosions and car races for symphonic music, monochromatic shots and "deep" life messages? That part broke the movie for me.
Then we continue with more explosions and races, but now with circus performance like stunts? Where that come from and why it is in mad max?
Why is there this feminist narrative : evil old diseased white guys destroyed the world and with army of violent fanatic white guys enslaved people. luckily are brought down by few of virtuous women.
so deep message, so progressive, so original...
Lets not skip plot holes and realism, it was supposed to be action movie.

But seriously, what the duck?

First, it’s a dystopian world, squalor, misery, disease and oppression, I get it. However, these (and I use the word loosely) people, were so grotesque, so monstrous, so gruesome, so aberrant, they presented a world that I could not even root for the protagonists to survive in. It was such a world of dread and vulgar mutants my depression overwhelmed my ability to separate it out and simply enjoy the visuals. Speaking of visuals, there were stunts like we’ve never seen before. However, to achieve this never seen before quality, the stunts were totally preposterous. Every law of physics, gravity, logic, cause and effect, were breathtakingly violated. In this world seemingly comprised of only rabid dogs shaped into human form, who the hell refined the infinite amount of gasoline they used? Who were the mechanics and auto body experts that built and maintained all of the crap they used??? What did the multitude of thousands of depraved thirst starved inhabitants do when they were not all gathered at the rock tower of water dispensation? Farmers? Factory workers? Business owners? This world assaulted my logic to the degree that it pulled me out of the mindset the storyteller wanted me to lose myself in. Overall? Simply depressing. Expand

This movie is the poster child for style over substance. The costumes, sets, and character designs are gorgeous. The humor and spectacle of the film really stand out.

Unfortunately, all of this style never amounts to anything more than a car chase. The characters look great, but we don't know much about them besides where they live and how they dress. Furiosa and Max are like blanks where I suppose the viewer is supposed to fill themselves in. You're meant to want to BE Furiosa or Max, not KNOW the characters.

Underneath all of this caked on superficiality, there's a vague anti-authoritarian message that's drowned out by guitar-flamethrowers and revving engines. I was really interested to learn more about that and to see Max, Furiosa, and Nux do something besides fight, drive, and shoot.

The special effects and action was great and who doesn't love a post apocalypse setting? But this movie suffers from very boring characters who were both uninteresting and poorly developed. I never cared for the Max himself, in fact, I rank the old movies as average or below, but the other characters were very 1 dimensional and I just didnt care what happens one way or another. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Me and the girlfriend went to see this movie the beginning was fast paced and was showing us the new world. Later on you are introduced to the villains but not introduced to anything overly about them you know the immortal but you don't know anything else about him. The movie lacked any background and after the film I thought I may have missed something in the other movies so after re watching them to find out none of it ties into this sequel and was still left with unanswered question and the obvious "why didn't they just kill the bad guy at the start" once the villain dies it as if all his followers allow the city to be taken over by the villagers. The motive of why they are trying to escape the villain is only stated as him mistreating them and he desires them for healthy children. The part when you find out there is no green land and she falls to her knees and cries has no impact as you don't get any sense of past with the character you get no information of her homeland and why it was so important to bring them there. Not to mention Tom Hardy spends the first part of the film looking like Bane and sounding like a illiterate grunting moron and not the justice seeking, intelligent and experienced fire fighter Mel Gibson plays. This was a chance to continue what fans loved and I feel it didn't come up to pass Expand

What a disappointment!! George Miller how could you have come up with a movie this bad? Ok Max got away with just 17 lines in MM2 but the movie had earth and substance! Tom Hardy reduces Max to a boring mute idiot, sidelined by Charlize Theron who usually does ok in movies. Not this one unfortunately. The bad guys in MM1 and MM2 were real characters and real people. Everyone in the film had a purpose, a reason to be. No one in this film is connected to any part of anything. Its a totally disconnected silly stage act that insults the viewer on a number of levels .
As for the vehicles- ok its better than nothing ( thunderdome) but they are foolish, unreal, disneyesque, and absurd - almost like trying to impress an adult with a transformer toy. They wouldn't last a day in a real apocalyptic landscape, prompting too many questions like why and how?
The plot -They go somewhere and turn around and go back again. Driving miss daisy with a bit more horsepower, but less storyline. And a few cirque de soleil clowns thrown in who do some zany acrobatics."oooh I heard the stunts were real and not cgi"
What character development ? Zilch! why were the baddies so bad? I don't know or really care. They certainly aren't real or menacing like the humungous. They don't create an iota of tension or a modicum of memorability
This movie is the diametric opposite to its relatively austere Aussie dirt outback heritage, which is replaced by fake yellow fantasy sandstorms direct from the mummy returns - Why were they driving in there again? Don't ask yourself these questions as there are no reasons for anything in Fury Road.

The feminism is a contrived twist that does nothing to improve the film, as no characters are developed male or female.

If you can ignore the lack of acting, plot or story, what is left is 2 hours of whacky silly nonsense and pointless races/pyro/ explosions. . Unlike the previous films fury road is a hollow movie that betrays its genuine fan base and treats the rest of the audience like a bunch of morons with A.D.D. Sadly its been such a long time coming but consigned as an opportunity lost.

but there isn't any story and the symbols are full of slogan that they don't useful for the considering of Mad Max. so if we change cinematographer and editor, this movie is going to touch a big downfall because Mad Max doesn't have a perfect form, it's trapped into the technical items and glorious framing. the characters have good shapes but miller can't polish their Inner personality. so we can see a lot of shocking scenes full of imperial framings but there isn't any story so screenplay falling down from a large position of technique without any notion and without ant dram. overall we shocked but for second!

Another boring movie, no interesting story, no interesting characters, main character just don't like to talk, typical action movie from 90's but with modern graphics and nostalgia effect for fans. Even Marvel 12+ movies are better. What a waste...

Theron contributes very little to this endeavor, mugging constantly and little else...I think Lucie Safarova, currently doing well at Roland Garros I might add, could have done just as well in this role.

This fourth installment had a troubled production, it should have been done & dusted over a decade ago...the project should have been peacefully buried, but

As of today “Mad Max: Fury Road” holds the title for ‘the loudest movie of 2015’ though from what I saw of summer previews it may not hold it for too long!

It has been 30 years since the original Mad Max trilogy and memory may be wrong but I remember a deeper and more involving story along with a young Mel Gibson showing more emotion than the current Max played by Tom Hardy. I have heard and read a lot about Mr. Hardy in the past couple of years but I think I have only seen him in two movies those being “Inception” and “Dark Knight Rises” but I have no recollection of him in either. The camera gives him a lot of close ups in this film so I am sure I will recognize him in future films.

Getting an equal amount of face time, if not a little more, and the only reason I went to see this film is Charlize Theron, who plays Imperator Furiosa, looks great even with a dirty face, raccoon eye makeup, short cropped black hair and a mechanical left hand and is the equal, if not better, than any man hero! Her eyes are a movie, without CGI effects, on their own.

The first five minutes of “Mad Max: Fury Road” are quiet and then the incessant loud music, the races, car chases, one action scene after another begin to wear the audience down. Within a 2 hour movie there might be 15 minutes total without mayhem in every form possible. It reached a point that I was wondering how many scenes were done in front of a green screen, how many were fake, how many were performed by stunt people all the while that long music ruled by drums fills the auditorium. There is one remarkable scene of just Hardy raising up from the desert sand that made me think “WOW”!

With a huge cast the standouts are Theron, Nathan Jones, Nicholas Hoult, the 5 wives, especially Riley Keough and trust me, you won’t want to meet any of the female sexagenarians in a dark alley or the desert!

The direction by George Miller offers every action fans dreams while the screenplay by Miller, Brendan McCarthy and Nico Lathouris is simple. It is said Miller already has the next Mad Max film prepped named Furiosa and, if true, I hope it brings back Theron.

After “The Avengers” last week and this week “mad Max” I can honestly say I have had my fill of ‘summer blockbusters.’

I expected to love this movie - I love the originals specifically (first two more than the third, obviously) and sci-fi and post apocalyptic movies generally. I don't demand more than the skimpiest of plots in them as long as I care about whether the people live or die as we go on their journey with them. And in this movie I really didn't care.

In the original movies, I cared about Max and understood his pain. In 1, I knew why he was in the situation he was in and I knew why he did what he did, even while I wanted him to be better. In 2, I cared about the other people in the settlement and I wanted them to understand that Max was a good guy deep down and wanted them to accept him. I cared about Max's dog and what happened to him more than I cared about any human character at all in this new movie.

Yes, the movie looked incredible, but all it did was take a bunch of undeniably incredible set pieces and then flap about looking for a plot to string them together. This was like a two hour trailer for a movie I felt I WOULD like to watch, because in the actual movie there would have been something to make me care one jot for the people in it. And I just didn't.

Mad Max: Fury Road is completely overrated.

Make no mistake, its basically one long car chase whilst trying to masquerade itself as something more.

The plot itself is absurd and in its execution is inordinately action packed, to an extend you feel exhausted, fueling the desire for the movie to simply end. The theme of a post apocalyptic world is taken to its very extreme which ruined any hope of taking it seriously in the first place.

The subtle injections of feminism don't necessarily degrade the narrative, it does a good job of doing that on its own, but it does add to a more implausible scenario where you have women well passed their menopausal threshold engaging in activities that are normally accustomed to navy seals and bikie gangs.

Its a long, tedious and gratuitous bore... the taken 3, if you will.

It's as if they took the last 20 minutes of Road Warrior (a spectacular film) and made it into a 2 hour movie. No build, no suspense. Nothing. I'm not even sure that the main character IS max as his random, nonsensical flashbacks can't even be tied to any of the previous films. The visuals were wonderful, the cinematography great, and the action was above average, for sure, but it takes more than that to make a great action film. See the aforementioned Road Warrior, Terminator 2 (or Terminator 1), Aliens, Predator, The Matrix. All those movies had gripping plots, intense suspense, good builds, great character development, in addition to amazing visuals and top notch action. All classics. People try to tell me that this movie was about 'visual storytelling'. Sure, it had that. But it was like a few tiny pieces of meat on a mostly bare skeleton. This movie had the FEEL of classic mad max but none of the soul. Is this what american cinema has come to these days? Just how dumb and easily pleased is the average critic and metacritic user? If you're reading this, stop using this site, it's worthless. Think for yourself because these guys on here haven't a clue about good movies (or music, or video games). Expand

If this were part one of a trilogy or something like that I would understand, but as a stand-alone, it's completely moot and a stuntshow rather than a movie. Out of the two hours of runtime, I'd say one hour and a half is just mindless action scene that don't lead to anything: there's no realisation, nor "redemption" for any of the characters. Because, contrarily as to what it might suggets, you can't really buy this sort of happy ending, considering the premises - also, why is this movie titled Mad Max when Max himself is practically a secondary character, who, if you haven't seen the previous films, appears to come out of the blue without any purpose and just a hint, through hallucinations, of a backstory.

Eye candy for action fans, but for the rest of us, it's useless.

I was so disappointed, this is so much worse than original Mad Max movies. The story has NUMEROUS holes, how in the world they could survive after they got shot thousands and thousands bullets? They were thrown grenades at, they were fired bolts, and they even didn't get hurt. Two people killed hundreds, they must be Batman and Catwoman with nine lives. The end is most absurd - they have same group of blood, how surprisingly! And of course army of crazed monsters just let them to take the citadel, lol. I regret I watched this. Expand

Not that there is anything particularly wrong with those things but, when they play up those attributes and abandon others, like character development, plot structure, and practicality, you get a movie like this. In simple terms, this movie is a 2 hour car chase. Without any reasonable amount of time put in to discovering the motives of the protagonist or the antagonist. What is it that makes Max the good guy? Was that really clear? Why did this chase even happen and why was it so violent and costly? Was that clear? If you show a movie where cars chase each other for the whole run time, you should at least know for sure why. I understand that the antagonist's wives were stolen, but what made them so important? Why was so much risked and lost over these women? See, this movie created a smoke screen of fast paced action, flash, and flare, without actually creating anything profound. It abandoned the older Mad Max films' gritty, thrifty, and witty ways. Some parts were cool, there's no argument there. But that wasn't good story telling. Expand

I hated the first hour, but by the second I was more used to the setting, though I still didn't think it was good.

The aesthetics seemed poor to me, personally I think it's too cheap to just have filthy people and cars, it's unimaginative too stick scrap over a car and use the pretense of a post apocaliptic setting. I think it's lazy, and it actually reflects the source of the franchise as a movie with cheap production values.

Besides that, the plot, and the world itself, has a lot of holes. Or things that ae just for aesthetic reasons and make no sense. For example I was annoyed at how everything has a flamethrower when there's supposed to be scarcity of fuel. Or the unnecesary overuse of stunts, bike jumps and people climbing from one car to another, all that. The sad thing is the movie relies too much on that, leave that aside and there's not much left. In any case it's all just for show.

I think this movie is pretty overrated, I understand that people might like it because the whole cars theme is deeply rooted in the American car and road culture. In the end the characters themselves feel as if put together from old scrap.

The action is usual, there are many good movies that have action better than this. No dialogues to keep us entertained atleast a little.. over all , a poor movie with a good premise wasted.

I'm still waiting for a story to begin. I like simple, entertaining action movies (Shogun Assassin, any late 70's zombie movie, The Warriors), but this was a gratuitously long music video for a clown playing one guitar chord.

Within the first 3 minutes I kept asking myself "Why is this artificially sped up?" My hunch was that the old movies (which I haven't seen) did that. Later research confirmed this. This was probably a cool effect back in the 70s, but in the post-Transformers world of barely-coherent editing in action sequences, it just makes things so much worse.

Other than Max, each character's name is uttered maybe once, amidst screaming and car crashing, so I didn't know anyone's name until I looked it up later.

Almost all of the eleven lines in this movie are delivered with the melodramatic heft of a Spanish soap opera. I laughed at most of them. No one else in the theater did, which alarmed me. I think I counted 20 words from Max's mouth. His brow is furrowed the entire time.

This movie is described as "ultra-violent", yet if you take out 3 or 4 of the shots with blood, it's mostly pale dudes bouncing off of cars for 2 hours. It's more like a live-action Looney Tunes flick. Could have definitely gotten a PG-13 if desired, but that probably wouldn't have been edgy enough.

Seriously, just a few scenes of dialogue could have established the world, and the problems, but the opening narration is just "i am max. i run and stuff." I've dropped into other franchises with sequels first and never felt like I was missing a wealth of knowledge and unable to understand their world. Mad Max's world makes no sense to me, which again, is fine and a decision on behalf of the creators. But you need to give me SOME reason why characters are making the inane decisions that they do, otherwise everyone comes across as purely stupid.

I fell asleep during the last 20 minutes, so I'm not sure how it ended and I don't really care.

The effects are quite good (minus the fast-forward effect), and some of the set pieces are really cool. I dug the intro action sequence (though it basically never ends). The music is literally one symphonic swell with a palm-muted guitar chord over it.

I was really disappointed in Mad Max. The budget is certainly apparent on screen, which is pretty to look at, but it felt wasted against a bland story with no plot.

Where the first 2 Mad Max movies pull you in, Thunderdome and this one are not of the same Canon. I cant remember a single line that Max says, and to be honest, I don't get the hype for Theron. She never seemed that crazed, threatening, or powerful to me. Who are we really supposed to care for here?

The movie certainly is not without its good attributes. It is colored and shot beautifully, but is so thin every where else, the stunts and practical effects are wasted.

I wanted more Max, I wanted a follow up to that great scene at the end of "Road Warrior" where its just Max and the "Road". This outing borders on cartoonish, and isn't brutal in any way. Where we are supposed to feel fear, and stress at the mass of pursuit vehicles, all i kept thinking was, "Where do they get all the headlights?", or "for an apocalyptic wasteland, they seem to have no lack of tires or car parts". It just didn't feel in anyway remotely believable.

Many others have already said that it felt like a two-hour movie trailer. Save your money and just watch the trailer on repeat for an hour and you have it.

Bummed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is ridiculous. I have no idea why it's so highly rated by Tomatoes and why everyone seems to love it. It's a two-hour car chase. It's not even clever or well-done by action standards; it tries to be stylized but just ends up looking cheap, and not awesome. The effects are obvious and not well done. It was really, really dull.

I was so bored after the first 40 minutes--which was just mindless violence with the barest of plot flecks--that I pondered leaving.

I swaer to god when they turned around to go back to the Citadel I almost groaned, because I knew it would be the exact same as the first half of the movie, just in the opposite direction. And it was.

And the ending couldn't have been more of a "we're making a sequel so this is a non-ending" if it tried.

Don't get me wrong. I love action movies. Indiana Jones, The Matrix, V for Vendetta, Terminator 2, even something like Dark Knight, these are all action movies that are in the 90% review range. Mad Max is a pile of garbage compared to these, and doesn't deserve to be as highly rated, not even for the "fun factor". It's just bland and uninteresting.

*Spoiler Alert

Thom Hardy reprises his role as Bain in George Miller's new installment to his series, Transformers, I mean Fast and the Furious, I mean Mad Max.

I got caught up in the hype on this one. Who doesn't want to believe that a franchise so expansive in its influence on subsequent franchises would continue to add to its groundbreaking repertoire. That hype propelled me far past the dooming first sequence in which Thom Hardy (god bless him) chews on a CGI lizard. That opening eerily reminded me of another franchise's fatal final entry: Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull.

Though the death knell was ringing clearly in my head, I shook it quiet. I mean, there was still so much to be hopeful for; Thom Hardy, Charlize Theron, and a group of women called breeders who are exactly who I would cast as breeders in my own life.

While Charlize Theron, one of the only true beauties to grace the screen with equal talent, happened to live up to the film's expectations, Thom Hardy looked like he was thrown on-set with no one directing him. He seemed to be making it up as he went. One scene, he spoke with a noticeable Australian accent, the next, American, the next, American with a few words in Australian. He was Bain, no he was Bronson, no he was the mumbly guy from Lawless. Well, he's always mumbly.

I mean, it seems like he was thrown into this movie and once he realized it was just some confused mash-up of 300, Sucker Punch, and Fast and the Furious, he decided to downplay his character as not to be spotted in this movie.

Actually, I don't think Max even needed to be in this movie. Not once did he do anything that was memorable in the line of character or plot development. He didn't want anything. He didn't want to be a good guy or a bad guy. He didn't want to get involved with Charlize Theron. He didn't want to enjoy the only spot with water or food in the whole **** of a desert wasteland. He just bewildered me.

In the end, this movie didn't really do much but give us another forgettable action movie attached to a once epic character.

Other hilarious ridiculousness:

2. Monotonous. The car chase is pretty awesome for the first bit of it, but after an hour of the same exact thing, it gets quite boring.

As a fan of the original Mad Max movies, this was a tremendous disappointment. As others have said, basically a two hour chase scene. Yes, the vehicles and stunts are creative and impressive to look at and the director does a masterful job with all the visuals. Still, the bare bones plot which exists is incomprehensible, and I'm familiar with the back story. Can't see how you would have any idea what's going on without that prior knowledge. While there is at least minimal character development with Furiosa, there is almost none for Max. Neither actor does much acting, unless you consider endless angry, brooding looks as acting. Check out The Revenant to see a fabulous current performance from Hardy, and Monster for an acting tour de force from Theron, then compare that work with this. Seeing this movie garner 10 nominations made me think there must be something special, but now I'm just dumbfounded at the Academy voters. Expand

This movie is only great for the first 30 minutes until the "plot" kicks in and you see it as just a shameless Liberal Feminist film which it is and it tries to hide it with violent action but the action fails also. Bad guys fall like dominoes, the "good guys" have some sort of invincibility force field around them. It was just a bad movie, I'm not sure why critics are praising it's plot is it new? no is it predictable? yes! Seems like a movie made for Call of Duty players generic action and the protagonist is so underdeveloped at the first start I felt bad for him cause he was in pain but minutes later I couldn't care any less what happened to him cause he was just the generic-action protagonist along with the generic "beautiful girls" (who I thought were cliche and overdone) The whole movie just falls apart. Mad Max has been ruined by Feminism. Most of the movie doesn't even have any meaningful plot it's all just "OH LOOK EXPLOSIONS COOL!" "THAT GUY GOT SHOT AWESOME" kind of narration that drives the entire film and I wish I was exaggerating. It's like Twisted Metal but in movie form and the special effects sometimes were irritating. I couldn't feel like the protagonists were endanger at all because of how under powered the other guys were. I hope if there is a sequel it abandons this feminist-action hybrid formula and just focuses on action with an actual story and not old concepts added into a new adventure like this one did. Expand

Literal trash.

If it's supposed to be feminist film it does a bad job at portraying a feminist vision. You got enslaved women who are purposely impregnated just to have a source of food (milk) that never get freed, sex slaves that get freed only to go somewhere to be forced to partake in "divine femininity", and a Mary Sue tough as nails character they just exists to gain a female audience.

I'm sorry but that is far from a feminist film.

I will not even say the director of photography was that good either, there are no memorable scenes other than the hypocritical garbage I've talked about.

Dune Chapter 1 is ACTUALLY a visually impressive film albeit poorly written because it's broken up in parts and unwatchable without the full story, but you get my drift.

I am uncertain what exactly to rate Mad Max Fury Road, it's a bad film for me. Action is serviceable, but nothing great. I have seen far worse films though, so this review must be higher than other garbage.

Acting was absent, and I really like those actors. I only felt apathy for any, and I do mean any, of the characters. The scenes people are saying were so intense never once got my heart pumping BECAUSE I DIDN'T CARE FOR THE CHARACTERS. Oh, and those intense scenes left me saying to myself, why would they do that?? That was just an excuse to run one car into the other, an excuse to blow something up, an excuse to...I was constantly being reminded that I was not "in" the movie. The original Mad Max made you feel that you were in a post-apocalyptic landscape. Fuel was a rare resource, One wouldn't drive down the road spraying a flame thrower at nothing just to see it light up. They did in this flick because it was about impressing the kiddies and less about making the post-apoc landscape believable. The vehicles in this movie weren't impressive, they were just...silly.

Sorry, I can't subscribe to the notion that this movie worth the price of admission. My popcorn was the best part of this movie. /sad

If you want a great Tom Hardy movie, do yourself a favor and check out Lawless. He was fantastic in that one. I highly recommend it. In Mad Max Fury Road Tom Hardy could have been a regular street person randomly chosen from the crowd to act out this part. The fact that the main character was Tom Hardy was completely lost and wasted.

Mad Max(Tom Hardy) hardly seemed likeable or superhuman in most the movie maybe because he has almost no dialogue.

I gave it a 2 because it has Charlize Theron who attempts to make you care about her horribly written character and despite the buzzed haircut and missing arm, she is still sexy.

The entire movie is based around being in or on top of that damn semi truck. At one point (near the second half) they finally ditch the semi truck, and low and behold they decide to get back in and keep using it for the rest of the movie.
If your really into euro truck simulator, or continual plot holes, this will be right up yer alley.

Do know what Mad Max had Charlie past it Theron in it either for? Didn't do the film any favours and you wondered who was supposed to be the main character. I think Miller should have retired along time ago as the Mad Max name was obviously just put in there to cash in.

This movie is an idiot’s delight.

One of the nice things about the original Mad Max trilogy is that the movies got progressively better.
Unfortunately, Fury Road has regressed on all counts. The story line is essentially a repeat of Thunder Road, which makes it predictable. The dialogue is pathetic. (The first few words out Charlize Theron’s mouth are a big clue.) The movie becomes increasingly tedious as you begin to realize that what you are watching is a 107 minute long car chase. The fight scenes are unoriginal, unless you happen to think that a guy sitting on top of a long bamboo pole strapped to a car, that rocks back a forth like a metronome is creative genius. The bad guys are a bunch of brainwashed lemmings. Max has become a zombie and is nearly empathy proof. Numerous parts of the movie are aggravatingly illogical. (How do those old woman living in the desert survive? Where do they get the gas for their motorcycles?)

The original Mad Max movie was hardly great film making. It was a low budget, foreign film, and the American version used voice overs. The story line was essentially a Dirty Harry movie set in a post-apocalyptic Australian Outback. But Mel Gibson’s character was compelling, and you found yourself rooting for him to survive and avenge his family’s death.

The sequel (Thunder Road) also had a rather basic story line, (the good guys have an oil well and the bad guys want it), and there wasn’t much dialogue. The characters weren’t well developed, but they were interesting. The good guys were quirky, and the bad guys were extreme. They weren’t your run of the mill sociopaths, they were nuts, so crazy they made you laugh, and they had great costumes, too. They wore make-up, sported Mohawk haircuts, and dressed in punk leather bondage clothing.

The third installment (Beyond Thunder Dome) was another action feast for the eyes, but the movie finally moved beyond campy. It had a complex story line, original fight scenes, some actual dialogue, and a musical score to boot. It was, far and away the best movie of the trilogy.

I recommend Fury Road only if you’ve seen and enjoyed every Fast & Furious movie ever made.

Why did it cost so much to make this movie? Even the numberless action scenes all looked the same. I have never been less impressed.

No story, no dialogue, no character development, no nothing. I had no idea who those running people were, and I didn't give the slightest damn. Some of them died, and I didn't feel sorry the tiniest bit.

It was my first Tom Hardy movie, and it's certainly my last. He was trying too hard with the throaty voice. He had no body language and no facial expressions. According to this movie, he's a very bad actor.

Charles Theron was OK, but even the fact that she's one of my favorites didn't make me care about her suffering at the end of the movie.

You can't just expect people to care about random people running around and dying.

Very bad. VERY VERY bad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a disappointing re-boot of a classic, low budget original. In fact, it disrespects the original. In the original Mad Max, the lead character was actually mad, angry. In this re-boot he isn't even the lead. Furiosa is , and she is the Alpha. Mad max is along for a ride in this uber feminist take on this idea of a post apocalyptic, gas obsessed world. But wait, you say, the idea behind this film is that strong women can stand up to tyranny and create a better world, one that doesn't even contain men. Ok, so why is the Utopian green place dry up, most of the women dead, and their solution is to turned back to take over Joes' empire? Isn't this ending a slap in the face of feminism, as portrayed in this film? Women couldn't do it on their own so they took what a man created, but they are going to make it a better, gentler place? Don't get me started on the symbolism of the hot wives, in the desert, spraying themselves with the second most important liquid in this fantasy world, water , spilling it all over, drinking it , spitting it out. A symbolism for male seed and the value, or lack their of, that the modern feminist movement places on men? You decide. There are lots of little anti-male nuggets in this film.

Come on! First, feminism, by its very definition is equal pay for equal work. period. It's NOT about male roles vs female roles ( or stereotypes ). Second, who says women are kinder and gentler in an post apocalyptic world? Lots of examples of women that get drunk on money and power in today's society, why are they held in a better light in Mad Max vs the men? This is all misguided feminism. I guess, since women are better at their core then men, they really don't fart or pop either. Stupid drivel.

Mad Max gets taken very easily taken by a raiders gang ( you know the guy that has survived the wastelands for decades) and proceeds to be taken prisoner by a gang that are incapable of being the least bit articulate or show any intelligence. Yet they are somehow able to build and maintain various cars able to produce agriculture, make elaborate costumes, manipulate and control it's citizens and be organized enough to create a functioning society with working technology. I won't even mention how the way blood is transfused in this is impossible and wouldn't really work. Also the environment and costumes in this movie makes no sense what there is no resources left but you can make all of these elaborate costumes and machines. There were scenes in this movie where I literally had to stop myself from laughing like the breastfeeding scenes with plastic tubes and then cut to a midget in a highchair with a telescope. But to be honest the only reason anyone likes this film is because of the action which to be fair is really good but there is only so much bad one dimensional characters and silly character design I can handle before something is too stupid too watch. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I saw as a screener (for free), without any real expectations, and having not looked into any early reviews. In the end I spent most of the movie making snide comments to my friends and laughing at how implausible and poorly thought out it was, wishing there was a plot. It did become so ridiculous it was fun once in a while, but mostly it was just pointless and weird. I proceeded to check the reviews online when I got home thinking "this movie is going to get destroyed" - but no, everyone LOVES it?!! After reading about the "practical" stunts etc. - sure I'm impressed, but I still think overall the movie is so stupid that I signed up for a metacritic account just to say so! I could generate a list of 100 ways this is ridiculous (like if bullets and gas were in limited supply, why is everyone shooting guns and flamethrowers into the sky?) I truly felt nothing for these characters and was quite glad when it ended (with the "good guys" just dumping all the water into the desert!). There are other reviews here that more accurately capture why this movie makes no sense (look for the red reviews) - I just wanted to express my confusion as to the widespread acclaim for this movie. I guess I just missed the point. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Some 30 years after the last Mad Max saga, Fury Road was awaited with much anticipation and expectation. Unfortunately the film never truly delivers (or builds on) its legacy. Sure, there's spectacular explosions, a phlethora of scrap metal vehicles + some really weird characters indeed. The story itself is paper thin (even for Mad Max movies), almost non-existent really. No character in the film has any depth, with some sort of exception of Charlize Theron's character. Max Rockatansky mainly serves as a punching bag in this movie and only catches a few rays of limelight that bounce off Furiosa (Theron). For this reason alone the movie title seems all wrong: it's way more about Furiosa than it is about Max. The film itself seems like one big car chase through the desert wasteland with some "king-of-the-hill" fighting sequences intermixed. The ending is typical "leave room for a sequel". And yes, Mad Max The Wasteland has already been announced: no sense of at least some sort of episode closure whatsoever.

I had high hopes for this movie. Because of the franchise/concept and because of George Miller in the directors chair. Compared to Beyond Thunderdome and The Road Warrior (especially that one) Fury Road never truly delivers. Not on characters, certainly not on story and only half-hearted on action sequences and scenery.

It's a 2 hour long car chase ... that's it. There's barely a plot to speak with, what plot there is makes no sense because there is no backstory. There's no reason for us to care about ANY of these characters: we don't know who any of them are or why they matter. The reasons behind the entire chase ... which is the majority of the film... are barely touched upon. I had to google to find out who Immortan Joe was, the breeders, the chroming, literally everything in the film because NONE of it was explained. This is what passes for a film now. Zero story, no character development, but if you throw in a whole lot of the right kind of action people just go nuts for it. I'm seeing critics giving this film bonus points for not doing all the effects using CGI. Whatever happened to writing guys? Script? Plot? Dialogue? Do these things mean nothing anymore? People call it the best film of the year: why? How does this movie possibly merit praise that high? Are we seriously such a low attention-span country that now even our critics can't be expected to hold cinema to any bars save good special effects, cool costumes, and "colorful characters"? There is absolutely no dialogue, no character development, no acting, zippo, nada, nothing! This flick is a non stop shoot up video game for teenage children with ADD. Scene after scene repeated ad nausea with the bad guys falling like ducks in a shooting gallery. The good guys outnumbered 1000-1 no direct hits. I felt like I was watching two hours of Ninetendo's Space Invaders or Asteroids. Then in the end they threw in some Circus Soleil spectaculars with the goonies swinging back and forth on tall bamboo stilts as sitting targets. Sorry I just don't get it. I guess if you like end to end shoot em up, blow em up, loud explosion ridiculous car chase scenes for 2 hours then this is the movie for you. Exactly why were they chasing them? Don't bother answering as I could care less. If you must see this check your brains in at the door. Avoid. Expand

I have been a fan of all 3 Mad Max movies and watched each of them several times over. However, I hated this movie and almost walked out half way through it for the following reasons.
1) There is no story and hardly any dialogue in this movie. There are few references to what Charlize Theron is trying to do and I understand why, but it is quickly forgotten and lost in the action.
2) I realized half way through the movie that I didn't care about a single character (even Max). There is very little character development other than displaying how each one shoots a gun or stabs at another character. They could have blown up the world and the bonus is the movie would have been over sooner.
3) The movie went to far over the top with deformed, ugly, degenerate human beings. They even cut all of Charlize's hair off and if that wasn't enough, let's amputate her left arm at the elbow. Lost opportunity for nice eye candy in the movie.
4) I got tired of looking at my watch every 30 minutes.

1 star for some decent action scenes which dominate the movie and become monotonous as they blur into each other.

Awful boring script, cliche after cliche, nothing original from first minute to last. Did they really just film over an hour or movie in exactly the same setting, a truck....I am so glad I did not waste my money in the cinema but feel ripped off paying for the rental.

Should never have been labelled Mad Max. Boring weak character, nothing like the original.

Very disappointed.

I'd like to say I watched every single minute and gave it a truly fair chance, but it was a bit like watching X games. I get tired of those after the first few neat tricks. This was predictable and boring after the first three things blew up. I thought that a story might be developing with the breeders, but they ended up just being boring passengers. I truly respect everything the special effects people did, but truthfully---it was a bit like watching fireworks--fun for the first 10 minutes, but then if you have anything else to do, you usually go do that instead. Also--why in the world is anyone saying that Charlieze Theron is doing brilliant acting work here? Where? When? I've seen this actress tear up the screen and she is one of my very favorites, but in this? Sorry---not seeing it or feeling it. Expand

Now he brings his monotony to Mad Max, the latest of sacred 'man's movies' to be emasculated by feminism. Bane masks (yeah he ruined a Batman also with his boring monotony) are rampant. too much heavy handed feminism spoils what otherwise is some of the most beautiful cgi photography and action scenes in a long time. Charlize Theron is fantastic as always, but an abhorrent plot--A tanker of breast milk--I'm not kidding, really makes it bad. I miss good, strong women like Tina Turner, who managed charm and grace along with strength. Other strong female characters who did it right were the love interest in Raiders of the Lost ark, and the young girl from the new True Grit remake. Expand

Road to Nowhere

This movie was absolutely deplorable. Sure no sex or swearing but it paled in comparison to the original Road Warrior and Mad Max. Where was the dog and Gyro Man when you really needed them?

The acting, if you can call it acting was limited to 10 word utterances. Hardy was god-awful with his Aussie type accent if you can call it that. In fact the accent changed towards the end of the flick. The only redeeming features where Charlize Theron and some of the action sequences.

But while it was loaded with action so much of the film was speeded up to supposedly heighten the action which it did not. The plot was so thin as well.

All in all a total waste of time of true Mad Max fans.

I can't believe so many people liked this film, or perhaps I'm just missing the point. 90% of the film was a ridiculous car chase, and whilst I like a bit of action, most of this just seemed pointless. Where was everyone going? Why was there someone stuck to some rubber bands playing heavy metal music on a guitar? It was just ridiculous.

The lack of story or character development made the film incredibly boring to watch. The classic Mad Max films were so much better than this drivel.

Dialogues try to reach a style, at one or two occasions, they succeed, but only to fail you 98 % of the rest of the time. This movie has laziness written all over, symptoms of our times... make non stop stupid action with stupid non surprising plot with a camera having a stroke and people will love it... I gave 1 point because at times, the photography was nice.
On a side note, the movie crew badly damaged very sensitive parts of the Namibian desert.
