Pros:
Action was unique
Intense cinematoraphy and special effects
costume design
thematic elements

Cons:
One loonnnnng car ride and conversation isnt really a big thing here.
Lack of a great plot
I wish they could do more with it towards the middle but I'll avoid spoiling

I mean if this film does not click with the audience and flops, that means it’s not the filmmakers’ fault, it’s the audience that will spell the end of innovating, original, fresh daring, bold blockbusters like these, which are already impossible to make in this day and age. To say this is the movie of the year would be an understatement, it’s quite simply a stunning work of art, filled with impressionistic visual splendour that stuns you from beginning to end. George Miller proves why he’s a master filmmaker when it comes to staging epic stunts and, of course, chase sequences. And it wouldn’t be an overestimation if I deem Fury Road (2015) superior to Road Warrior (1981) and as the best of the Mad Max series. This one takes the cake for being the must watch movie of the year; one that demands to be seen only on the biggest IMAX screen you can find. For once the hype and the reviews more than lived up to expectations. Action and blockbuster cinema simply does not get better than this, the bar has been set very high. Expand

It delivers on its crazy characters and over the top, beautifully shot, practical action sequences. Hardy and Theron are great in their roles and Miller has truly expanded on his world in an interesting way, showing new interesting concepts and developing characteristics in the new characters, humanizing the unlikeliest of them. Is it the Mad Max 2 of this generation? No, but it sure isn't that far behind. Expand

The film is live, you believe what is happening on screen, in fact 80% of tricks were performed without the use of special effects. Post-apocalyptic world is shown competently and detailed. At the same time new Mad Max is essentially a stretched two hours Short chronologically located between the first and the second films of the original trilogy. It is indicative that the script is represented by the 3,500 storyboards. So it turns out that too much action makes look heroes unexamined, their actions often are not motivated, and some dialogues do not cause anything but a confusion. And even such lightweight script manages to include the typical large blockbusters logical blunders. But do not care, it is a great attraction - the madness in its purest form! Expand

Fantastic ActionI feel as if the movie contained many elements from movies such as: The Dark Knight, Mad Max 1979 (Obviously), Death Race and even Warrior. Excellent Score, Cinematography, Character development, Subtlety and even Conclusion. Fantastic Action movie and fantastic drama as well. Many people on here are complaining that the movie was confusing and nonsensical, but its a pretty easy movie to pay attention to. I watched this with my friend and we whispered every other minute to each other and we both managed to remember most characters and even discuss Easter eggs and features in the characters. Just pay attention and you will have a ton of fun! But dont expect Citizen kane or White Ribbon because this film is not a deep artistic depiction of an Apocalypse or even Charcters. fully aware of what it is and because of that it makes it even more enjoyable! A big salute to this maverick director and his rusty and mangled post apocalyptic vision of wasteland with crazy cults, fortified ghettos, suicide fighters, fire, gasoline, psychos, explosion, flares and dust flying around. The whole movie is one extended action sequence filled with numerous interesting characters ( including Mad Max )... It seems the Mad Max trilogy reboot has started on a strong note and we could expect more in the sequels. Stars of the movie: George Miller and Charlize Theron (Furiosa)..Furiosa is the Ripley of these wastelands... Tom Hardy is adequate as Mad Max and has given a restrained performance. Brilliant cinematography and action choreography.. Also a major action movie to have string feminist undertones in mainstream Hollywood for a long time ( movie belongs to Furiosa)..Also loved the desert biker gang of old women from the Vulvalini clan... searching for hope and an opportunity to restart life among the deprived and crazy men.. Also missed Mel Gibson, the original Max . Expand

It had little substance, and was more of a spectacle, which I guess is good too. However, It thought because of this the character development was a little weak, and although fun, the action was relentless. Some of it was needlessly disgusting and unnecessary.

In short, I thought the movie was fun and visually stunning, but not much to it, and it's not the film you come out of and talk/think about. Hard to believe it was directed by a seventy-year-old.

I wasn't disappointed. Now, it was a bit short on plot but as a spectacle, it was stunning. The action scenes were amazingly done, and when they move away from the action to focus on the story for a while, it's no less compelling. Now, don't watch it expecting a completely original, thought-provoking masterpiece that will leave you thinking about life. Watch it expecting a fun, visually stunning action movie with interesting characters (though some are a little underdeveloped) and so much action, you won't believe it was directed by a 70-year-old (let alone, the 70-year-old who directed "Happy Feet"!). The fourth instalment in the Mad Max franchise, it is an Australian and American venture produced by Kennedy Miller Mitchell, RatPac-Dune Entertainment and Village Roadshow Pictures. The film is set in a future desert wasteland where gasoline and water are scarce commodities. It follows Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy), who joins forces with Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) to flee from cult leader Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) and his army in an armoured tanker truck, which leads to a lengthy road battle. The film also features Nicholas Hoult, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Riley Keough, Zoë Kravitz, Abbey Lee, and Courtney Eaton.

--Critical reception:

-Mad Max: Fury Road received widespread critical acclaim. Review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a 97% approval rating and rating average score of 8.8 out of 10 based on 348 reviews. The site's consensus reads, "With exhilarating action and a surprising amount of narrative heft, Mad Max: Fury Road brings George Miller's post-apocalyptic franchise roaring vigorously back to life." On Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating, the film has a score of 90 out of 100 based on 51 critics, indicating "universal acclaim". CinemaScore polls reported that the average grade cinema audiences gave the film was a "B+" on an A+ to F scale. Some critics have named Mad Max: Fury Road one of the greatest action films ever made.

-The film has also been praised by feminist critics on several fronts, including the dominant role taken by Furiosa and the range of atypical female roles including the wives and the gun-toting Vuvalini.

--Sequels:

-In 2011, Miller and McCarthy found during the writing process for Fury Road that they had enough story material for two additional scripts. One of these, entitled Mad Max: Furiosa, had already been completed, and Miller hoped to film it after the release of Fury Road. In March 2015, during an interview with Esquire, Hardy revealed that he was attached to star in four more Mad Max films following Fury Road. In May 2015, Miller told Wired: "Should Fury Road be successful, I've got two other stories to tell." Later in May, Miller revealed that plans for the sequel had changed and the next instalment will instead be titled Mad Max: The Wasteland. In October 2015, Miller revealed in an interview with TopGear.com that they had two scripts for sequels which they ended up with during the writing process. Later in October in an interview with Digital Spy, he revealed that Furiosa won't appear in the sequel and clarified that Mad Max: The Wasteland is just a working title for the sequel. Miller reaffirmed his intent to continue the franchise after reports to the contrary surfaced following an interview in January 2016.

The stunts are good but corny, the editing is probably the best part. Tom Hardy is no Mel Gibson. It is too corny, they shoehorn in contemporary feminist angles the best way Hollywood knows how-a tanker full of breast milk? Bruckheimer must have had a hand. At first, I thought I thought George was milking the franchise. Tom Hardy playing Mad Max was a relief, but it was very uncertain. After seeing the movie, I can safely say that it is "the greatest action movie of all time"(at least for me)!!! Miller's direction, screenplay, action sequences, musical score, cinematography, editing, costume design, visuals, and the cast's performances (particularly from Theron) were just acclaim-worthy. However, I just found hardy's performance to be a bit wooden as he just used grunts to communicate, still being in the shadows of Bane's character from The Dark Knight. Definitely in my top 3 movies of all time. Miller grandpa just proved me wrong! Those who say that it lacks a good story should need to go to film schools. Expand

Tom Hardy and Charlise Theron are very good as the central characters. The overall story is fine too. What separates this very good action movie from great action movies is (as it often is) the bad guy. The main villain is awful and mean and vicious. But there is nothing explaining his evil. All of his followers are equally unmotivated. While the characters of Theron and Hardy get a great deal of back story and motivation, the villains alas, do not. It still is very entertaining, well filmed and well edited. And I love action movies too. They are my guilty pleasure. This just did not have enough for me. Expand

I'm an old guy, so I remember the first films quite well. The original one that started it all was the best and then the ones that followed were more and more Hollywood...more concerned with bigger, louder, and just more, more, more.

Well, after reading a lot of reviews I gave the new iteration a try. While it certainly was entertaining, it had none of the original's charm. It is really just much bigger, much louder, and much, much more. Max is arguably not even the main character.

If you buy into the "more is more" that defines Hollywood action films these days, then you will probably enjoy this. However, if you want character development and an interesting story pass this one by.

One particular element I thought was handled poorly was Max being haunted by all the people he could not save as a former cop. Those memories were handled more like an Asian Horror flick than actual bad memories...right down to the little girl whose face and voice transform to creep you out.

This movie was a spectacle... a top notch spectacle. Every shot was a painting. Every concept was over the top. Every scene was a 20 minute non-stop buzz saw of guzzoline-filled action.

What this film lacked was the sense of isolation found in Road Warrior & Thunderdome. Part of the problem was the scale and budget of the film. Everything was bigger and more densely populated. Adding to that was the fact there there was such little down time, particularly at the beginning of the film. It gave me the feeling that world was made up of relatively densely populated and advanced enclaves that were in pretty close proximity to each other. Sure, the main civilization was run by a totalitarian madman but other than that it was well organized, running efficiently and generally in great shape. What happened to the rag-tag tribes that could barely scratching out an existence from a deserted post-apocalyptic wasteland?

While technically and cinematically incredible, I think Miller couldn't see the forest for the trees and forgot what made the last two films so haunting and memorable.

It was exciting, the acting was great, the story (yes, unlike what you've been told there's actually a story) was captivating and, while not really all that original, it felt fresh and unique in how it was told. Overall, this was very entertaining and I look forward to future installments. The negatives were that Charlize Theron has way too large of a role. Even in the trailer and promotional posters, she's clearly the star. Does this hurt the film? Not necessarily but it feels unnecessary. The story should've focused more on Max. We got almost no backstory for his character whatsoever and he maybe speaks a dozen lines. The other element that was a weak point was that some of the scenes were a bit too ridiculous. I expect some of it but not to the extent where you have a guy standing on top of a vehicle traveling at high speeds through the desert while playing an electric guitar with flames coming out of the tip. **SUMMARY - Watch the film but don't expect a Mad Max film**
Definitely an above average film but it's merely set in the Mad Max universe, it's not a Mad Max film. There's a peripheral character who wears Max's coat and drives his car for about 5 mins but he doesn't really do much and does nothing to demonstrate that he actually is Max; he could just be some guy who stole Max's car & jacket before the film started. Furiosa (Charlize Theron) is the star and she's great but it feels like a bit of a cheat. If I go to see "Wolverine: Phoenix Road" and find myself watching a film about Jean Grey with some guy who has Wolverine's hairdo and shows his claws for 2 mins but then spends the rest of the film sitting in the background grunting while Jean gets all the screen time I'm going to be a little confused as to why the film had "Wolverine" in the title.

The dialogue is silly and/or unintelligible. In the handful of scenes where the film stops for character stuff, it's laughable - as long as you're looking at cars in motion, it's awesome.

It's no T2, Dark Knight, Indiana Jones or Die Hard, great action movies with indelible characters whose fates we care about. There's literally no-one to get behind in the film - Furiosa has purpose but no story - so it has its look and it's mayhem, but nothing else. At least Tom Hardy plays it for laughs - his performance brings the humour that the film needs as relief from the mayhem.

Worth a rental for the action (once it's out on rental release). Probably a bit of the scope is lost on the small screen, and look for re-runs of this on TBS/USA in about 3 years.

I felt beaten and exhausted (as George Miller may have intended) well before the end. And I could not turn off my mind; too much disbelief, not enough suspension. Has any other film had as great a difference between the male and female characters? The very intense and busy action sequences were easy to follow, not confusing blurs as so many are these days, and the human (collateral?) damage was not overdone (no slow motion with torrents of blood). The trailers do prepare you for MM:FR, except for the subjective length of this very long 2 hour movie. Expand

It is the Die Hard of the modern age. You might be saying, Dangerfar, what in the hell does the German takeover in NY have to do with an apocolyptic showdown? Well, settle down, I'll tell you. They're fun dumb action movies.

It's a wild and tense ride from beginning to end, with scarcely any let off the gas. The cinematography is top notch, as is the costume design and score. The visual and audio experience are visceral and intensely compelling, unified in a striking and powerful way that will get the blood pumping more than most movies can.

The character development is, well there's not much character development. It does what I'll call the hurry-up character somewhat effectively though, which is seemingly becoming increasingly common these days. As movies like this emerge, which are essentially one long drawn out action scene, there quite simply isn't time for meaningful dialogue or to really get to know or feel for your characters. The good and bad guys are laid out well enough though, and there's enough random flashbacks to let you know this place is hell and Max is a good guy that is tormented by the world he lives in and some people he couldn't protect, so really its suffice.

All this to say, for what it is (an action movie), it is very well crafted indeed, and among the best in recent memory. When compared to movies on the whole though, or storytelling in general, or sci-fi (which for some reason some people seem to classify this as, it is not even a little bit sci-fi), it has a shiny veneer on a rather drab interior.

To be fair the plot picked up in the last hour as we saw the dynamic between the ladies as well as Furiosa and Max. Good car chase, funny dialogue in patches-Fury Road is neither a masterpiece nor a disaster, a solid action flick with a few breathtaking moments

Not much to say really, other than it was a really fun film.

Con:
The story wasn't very clear, and the lack of dialogue made it harder to figure out the plot, (seriously if you really break it down, so little is said. Not a bad thing though).

Pro:
With the lack of dialogue, it really brings out the emphasis on the action. Each scene is beautifully crafted and executed beautifully. Each action scene puts you on the edge of your seat, and the cast play all of their roles perfectly. It has also peaked my interest, pushing me to buy the original trilogy with Mel Gibson, to see how different the 2 films are.

If you are going to watch this film, do it on a big screen. You are able to appreciate each scene and the action that comes with it in so much greater detail.

Essentially it's 1 long lorry journey with lots of explosions and loud noises. However it sure is an awesome ride. The action is intense and barely stops throughout the film. The jaw dropping scenery coupled with intense soundtrack and effects make sure you're on the edge of your seat for the whole journey. However you do feel like all the action is disguising an incredibly basic and uninteresting plot and in terms of acting it's a mixed bag with some good performances and some not so good (looking at you RHW). Fans of mindless action will love this and it is impressive in so many ways, but it just doesn't have the substance to warrant me giving it any more than a (strong) 7 out of 10.

Overrated? Yes.
Should you watch it anyway? Yes.

Level of detail on the cars and locations-Beautiful! However the biggest flaw to the movie was the main character. I don't remember Mel ever being boring or as silent as this max. Granted that actor isn't know for dialogue in movies in my opinion, but okay. But it seems to me putting a mask on him at least gave him a reason for his silence - he must have forgot they took it off.
Overall I never felt a connection for max other than a nostalgic one and by the midway mark I was waiting for him to be more of a hero like the women in the movie were being. Nice work on that!
The cars had so much detail but I almost felt like I only got glimpses of that detail and all the fun ideas.
More than decent action movie but could've been more engaged to story.

That’s a good place to end, but no, just like George Miller we are plowing through to the bitter end. I watched somebody watch this on the little screen they stick on the back of airplane seats for long, cheap international flights. What the hell? Are you reliving the storyline so you can untangle some of the more complicated plot points (oh, that scene had 37 explosions, 2 were very subtle)? Are you soaking in all that rich character development (yes there is some, but stop acting like that’s revolutionary just because it’s better than would have been bad)? Did you accidentally see Confessions of a Shopaholic and just immediately need to burn the experience out of your veins? No, fellow traveler, you probably just love it so much that you would watch it on a **** if Apple would only let you, basking in the memory of all that blistering sight and sound while squinting against the glare on the morning train. I grew up with Mad Max. I wore out my bootleg Road Warrior tape when I got chicken pox. This is a different Mad Max in nearly every way, but it’s also a better one. I take it as a reboot. That makes things cleaner. There is maybe a 5% chance a sequel will be half as good or more than this new original—so revel in it while you can. And if you meet someone who doesn’t like it, don’t get on their case. They are weak, they have a condition, they don’t have the constitution for your impression of a War Rig. Expand

The result is visually impressive. Absolutely grotesque good and bad heroes fight for gas in a post-apocalyptic future society in a movie that can only be described as post-modern and cyberpunk. The exhilarating action is so intense that even the rotten tomatoes critic got curried away and gave it an almost perfect score (97%). Tom Hardy (known for Inception and The Dark Knight Rises) has become the next big thing in Hollywood due to this remake. Charlize Theron (an absolutely top actress overall) is simply great in the post-feminist role of Imperator Furlosa. Nevertheless, as one might expect, the fight for gas idea, which was original, innovative and to the point in 1979, has not aged very well and seems quite ridiculous today. Still, the movie is top notch as an action film with some very funny moments and you will remember it for some time, not for it's non-existent deeper meanings but for it's overambitious and grotesque cyberpunk environment.

The film has what i would consider to be one of the most overrated story lines of all time. Most of the characters are never fully developed, and this includes the Main Lead. If the main character was not the titular Max you would have absolutely no reason to care about him. Furiosa is developed the most out of all the characters in fact she hijacks the story so often I started to think this was just a movie they threw max in to. Honestly I found the story ultimately boring and a standard predictable ride for a traditional good vs. evil flick. Does this mean you shouldn't watch the film, No, it still remains to have incredible set pieces and very entertaining events spring throughout despite the lackluster Characters and plot. Expand

Miller gives us a crazy take on the post-apocalyptic world. His vision is twisted, violent, and at times quite humorous. It's a very stylistic film. Unfortunately I couldn't find too much substance backing it up.

The story and characters are rather shallow. Both just serve as vehicle for the action while giving us something and some people to root for. That's wouldn't really be too much of a bad thing had it delivered a little bit more in that department. Miller certainly does has a particular flair to his action scenes, but they are far from the mind-blowing spectacles so many would have us believe. What we get here is mildly entertaining at best.

The world this movie inhabits has a certain hideous beauty to it. It's just a shame it isn't filled with much compelling content. Performances are solid, but these actors aren't playing fleshed out characters and they aren't really given much to say. The story is a simple set up for big action-packed spectacle that never arrives. What we get is a mildly entertaining but ultimately disappointing action flick that doesn't deliver much. It's a case of a lot of flash and not much bang. It's not as "mad" as we were led to believe.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I dislike the cinema. A lot. A'holes stuffing their faces with giant bags of crisps - mobile phones - people talking - like jeez you fat-assed loudmouth can you not go for 2 hours without eating something? - Unreal. But much as I dislike the overpriced cinematic experience I decided with this movie It was must see on the big screen. Boy was I wrong. But first things first...

The main protagonist says next to nothing for the entire movie, in fact for a lot of it he is basically helpless. A lot has been made about the whole 'feminist over current' which runs throughout the movie. For me it wasn't that big a deal as this is essentially a science fiction. In fact it becomes laughable towards the end of the movie when the dessert dwelling motorcycle gang remove their helmets and WHOA! - what a surprise! - they are octogenarian gun-wielding badass grannies!! One of them manages to almost spit every time she uses the word 'man' or 'men', trust me proper feminists would be rolling their eyes at this hammy, gratuitous, matronising scripting.

As for the core of the movie itself, like others have said its basically one big car chase. I knew it would be, so no big surprise there, but I had 2 problems with this. The first was the speed of the action. The action sequences are happening so bloody quickly that you will struggle to take it all in. At some points you will even lose track of who is who particularly on the bonnet / roof / trailer fight scenes. It's a visual assault, but its just too much on a cinema screen - I reckon it will be better on a 42" or 50" lcd.

The other thing is the pace of the car chases. The old ‘speed up the film’ trick is used to convey a sense of breakneck speed during the chases but as soon as a realtime stunt is performed everything noticeably slows down, the car that flips around and drives in reverse being one example - its like one minute they are doing 110mph and next its 40mph then back to 110mph again.

Also, when Max stops the gang on the Salt Plain and suggests they turn around and go back towards the enemy that has been trying to kill them for the past 2 hours they all agree a bit too easily for my liking, even the old femme-warrior bats, just another suspend belief moment I guess.

On the positive side the setting, vehicles, wardrobe dept all nailed it. I was sort of reminded of that game called RAGE from a few years back in terms of the overall design theme.

To summarise Mad Max: Fury Road is definitely worth seeing because as an action movie it delivers in spades. I just hope that the director has satisfied his desire to placate the marauding feminist hordes and that the next movie is closer to the ethos of the original and it’s sequel.

I was dragged into the cinema without any expectations. But then, it starting to get interesting, to this apocalyptic perspective of the future was added a completely different and surprising reality, and a good bonus of the great action scenes. We must not forget the movie photography, I was impressed. Suddenly the movie ends. Just like that, with no punch story, no consistent ending, it missed a lot. It was like leaving a delicious restaurant very hungry, urging to go to mcdonalds. :( Expand

But, beware there is no deep story or dialogue, mad max rarely talks or drives his car. The movie is all about Charlize and driving from point A to point B and then back to point A again. Once you realize this, you get bored. it is really just a bunch of people trying to stop a truck from driving to its destination, not enough unique visuals or gore to keep you interested though. Im seeing crazy terms like Movie of the year. Im reading perfect reviews scores from so many critics that I wonder A) How do you get a job? B) Who are you writing for? The reader or the studios C) Are you giving it higher scores bcos you want to see more of the rebooted franchise? Clearly there is money involved. This looks good on screen, its Max, it has George Millers style dripping throughout, but all said and done its not a great movie. I was excited, the early screenings were received with applause, so impressed were the studios they gave Miller $14mill to go back add more explosions, more stunts..What Rubbish!! they were given $14million to buy the reviews of critics to cover over the complete lack of storyline, plot or character development. Make no mistake, this is marketing branding vehicle, like Hunger Games, totally purchased reviews. A pay day movie to the media sites and reviewers. They know this, play ball, perpetrate the myth. Charlise is there cos Max is wooden, maybe if he actually displayed some MAD qualities. His instincts, his battle with the crazies out there that took killed his family, the road warrior surviving the highways in his V8 Interceptor. No instead they blow up it in first 5mins of movie so he can travel on the venga bus/truck whatever. There is very little buy in, you dont feel the drama, the tension cos you know the result. It just tries to fill that 2hrs with distractions and stunts of crazies biting the dust that you care little about. Its the shallow surfaceness thats the problem. Theres no twists, no surprises, and lacks the characters of the original, or the comraderie of Max & Gyro Capt found in Mad Max 2. The crazies have about as much menace as Thunderdome. I saw Mad Max 2 with my brother 30yrs ago we came out of that movie amped. That was a classic. Max motivations were real. The threat was real, so then the drama was real, you bought into who would live and die. When Hollywood gonna learn? Charlize Theron is too well known, so theres never any threat to her. You know she will be there as will Max at the end of the movie. This ranks 3rd of the Max franchise, as nothings as bad as Thunderdome, however its still completely mindless and missing the soul of the first two. The reviews above 70 are generous, those in 80s need to get real.. The 90 to 100 scores hahaha you have been bought!! This is not a masterpiece. Do your bloodyy job. Sorry George Miller as an Aussie I want you to successfully reboot Max, but not like this. Make a quality Max, your last 2 efforts are diminishing the franchise. Its becoming a joke. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A late review now that all the ludicrous praise has subsided. As a preliminary, I watched all the previous Mad Max movies again. At one point in my youth, I thought The Road Warrior was one of the best films ever but wow; these movies did not age well at all. Fury Road is in general an improvement, but when you get down to it, the cars do most of the acting. The music is a massive improvement over Brian May's and Maurice Jarre's crimes against musical humanity, but Tom Hardy has about as much charisma as a turnip. As a straight-up action film, it's watchable and holds interest, and is certainly better than the anschluss of super-hero movies currently stinking up the marquees with no sign of relief. The amount of high praise heaped on this movie however is baffling.

Just as aside, there have been some complaints that Fury Road caters to Political Correctness with its emphasis on the ass-kicking chick and the oppression of the "breeders" by men. I'm as down on SocJus gibberish as any sensible person is, but in this flick it is not really noticeable. At a critical point, Max persuades the group to turn back and fight. Letting the white, heterosexual male make such a plot-turning suggestion is a big no-no among the perpetually aggrieved so if you want I-am-woman-hear-me-roar stuff, try the Alien series.

It has no higher meaning, you get what you get, it won't make you feel any different from when you walked into the theatre. It's like going to see a glorified Michael Bay movie, albeit with better cinematography. The acclaim that this movie has received is undeserved, as it is just like any other action movie out there, it does nothing special. The times that the movie does take a turn from the two hour long car chase are pretty mediocre with unconvincing acting all around, really. Tom Hardy does a pretty okay job in this film, but he also has the same style as he does in a great majority of his work. It is a fun ride and an enjoyable watch, but not a groundbreaking development for action films. Expand

Charlize Theron was the true protagonist of the movie. While Tom Hardening has a knack for playing brooding characters (Warrior), he was clearly eclipsed by Charlize Theron in this film.
Arguably, Charlize Theron seemed to be the true protagonist of the film and in fact carried this movie. I have no doubt this would have been a much better film and story had her character been overtly central from the beginning, rather than the protagonist behind the protagonist. Perhaps movie moguls were afraid to alienate fans of the original male-dominated storyline, but that fear hurt this movie in my opinion. When you have an acting talent such as Theron on board--take full advantage of it!
This is not a movie with a lot of dialogue. So as expected, action scenes dominate this movie. But for me, it is those brief moments of dialogue, and those magical moments of non-verbal closeups on characters that are crucial to the story line and allow you to connect to the inner turmoil of the characters.
Up until Charlize Theron's character comes to life on the screen halfway thru the movie, the story is relatively dry. Some actors have that uncanny ability to speak a thousand words thru their eyes; Mel Gibson (original Mad Max movies) has that ability, and Charlize Theron has that ability in this movie. However, I didn't get that from Tom Harding in this film. Rather, he seemed disconnected from his character throughout the movie. Which is surprising considering his great performance in Warrior. In my opinion, an actor should be able to connect with the audience even if they are playing a disconnected character--that's the magic...To that end, I should mention Nicholas Hoult's performance was quite tangible and almost quantifiable in this film.
I'm not a fan of 3-D, and seeing this film in 3-D unfortunately didn't change my opinion. You still don't get that wrap-around affect that would create a truly immersional experience, and the colors are never as vibrant and crisp as in non-3D movies. I'm still waiting to be surprised--hopefully in my lifetime...
Disclaimer, I'm a fan of Charlize Theron. She's an excellent and seasoned actress willing to step up to the plate and show true acting chops in movies like Monster for which she won an Academy Award. I'm also a fan of Mel Gibson, so perhaps Tom Harding just had big shoes to fill...

My favorites were the wild funny cars, the men attached to long poles swinging down to attack, and of course, the heavy metal guitarist chained to the front of a truck! Woohoo! Oh yes, and the costumes were plenty cool too. But the story and the characters? I feel like I say this about every big budget movie now - awesome effects, great production, fine acting - and a LCD script that has nothing whatsoever to say. Go Long And Fast.

Mad Max: Fury Road

Miller has taken things too far even for this franchise. Are we supposed to chug it all up? As much as passionate and meticulously driven this post apocalyptic world is, I would like to think that the genre sci-fi; which so it blatantly claims to be, is either misinterpreted or taken for granted in here. This film is far from being thought provoking. This raw ruffian ideology that George Miller; the writer-director, thrives upon, is more admirable than overwhelming. His utter fierceful confident in his vision is frankly dangerous. To pull off such a heist- if I could call it- at this scale is purely inspirational.

It is so bizarrely grand that the narration or characters or even the cinema itself gets lost into the dust. Aforementioned, it can be difficult for some viewers to swallow in this whole tale, swirling around in a pathos unapologetic world, there is barely any host for us to root for. And this very three dimensional take is what helps the cast to portray a fluid creamy persona in this bumpy road. Charlize Theron as the most lethal and convincing among all, is more than a match for Tom Hardy's "one instinct-ish" iconic character Max.

In fact, if anything, Hardy has to try hard, even snatch a gun in order to helm charge on her, a fatal attempt as Theron refuses to share the steely cold looks with anyone on screen. Another fascinating factor is the supporting characters and how invested they are in telling this story, crossing boundaries and showcasing a feat of bravery and commitment, this ensemble of cast defines the term "teamwork" to a whole new level. Mad Max: Fury Road iterates the theme of the world in its long action sequences, a game of chess, not the sacrifice or the head scratching tricks of it, but a succession of winning attempts.

The vehicles and characters are cool, but a lot of things make no sense, like the dude with the flaming guitar, wtf?! Beside, the movie is called Mad Max, but really the main hero is Furiosa, Max is just a secondary puppet that helps her, because she's hot and she travels with a bunch of supermodels. Ok, visually was good, but the movie has the overall depth of a tampons commercial... Also, for the first time, it was OBVIOUS that the actors re-dubbed themselves.

The original Mad Max was uniquely odd and the second film, if memory serves correctly, was exciting if a tad more conventional. Beyond Thunderdome was just a disaster. A copper bottomed clinker that had Tina Turner appear for novelty value in addition to a load of dishevelled snotty nosed brats. This combination ensured thatt the turn off was complete. Thankfully, Fury Road is considerably better than that debacle, but is some way behind the earlier two instalments and is certainly not worthy of the euphoric reviews and praise that have been heaped upon it by both the critics and public, singing in unison for once it would appear. Production values are sound and it must be said that visually the film is an absolute delight. John Seale’s cinematic compositions for day and night are constantly impressive and there is one corker of a moment when what looks like a sand dune suddenly metamorphosis’s into Max (Tom Hardy). There is also much stylisation in the battle scenes with jump cuts adding immeasurably to the impact and editing that moves along at the rate of knots. The sound is another strong plus and whilst there is plenty of appropriate menace in the score one is unprepared for just how beautiful the music is here.
So what’s wrong with it? Well, unfortunately, the story is as light as a feather. This is basically just a two hour chase movie and only the most dedicated Max fans will not be tempted to give in to the unerring crash, bang, and wallop pointlessness of it all, despite the many technical strengths on display. Of the actors, Charlize Theron is really rather good in a role that is a million miles away from anything she has ever done before. Nicholas Hoult, unrecognisable under impressive make-up, is ok, but the weakest of the three leads. I use the term ‘lead’ loosely as Tom Hardy’s Max seems to be relegated to a supporting role here, even if the actor turns in another one of his customarily good performances. There is no doubting that Hardy is a better actor than Gibson, but for my money Max 1 and 2 remain the yardsticks by which the other films should be judged.

Great visuals, crap dialogue. Yes I know it's an action movie, I'm not expecting dialogue like the Godfather or from an Aaron Sorkin, but you do expect good stuff from the man that created Lord Humungus. Also, this is a Mad Max movie, they should have called it Imperator Furiosa since Charlize Theron is obviously the main focus of the film. And it's not really Mad Max without Mel Gibson.

Also the V8 Interceptor barely shows up. The action is pretty amazing, but overall too over-hyped. Disappointing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I must have seen a totally different movie than the rest of the critics and reviewers. This was a movie full of cars, gun-fights, and explosions that somehow manages to be boring. The script feels like the first draft for an undergraduate screenwriting class, with Max uttering little more than a few grunts throughout the full two hours, a plan that flies in the face of all the rules for the universe that have already been set, and religious zealots who turn to celebrate the people who killed their messiah. Throw in some sloppy editing and bad pacing and this was ultimately a forgettable film.

Blowing the rocks in the mountain pass already proved to be little more than a temporary road block the first time, yet it is somehow a permanent solution to keeping out the war boys on the return trip. Watching Max try to convince Furiosa that this was a good idea was hilariously painful, especially once you realize that driving 160 days in any direction anywhere on Earth will eventually get you to an ocean, and that no motorcycle could possibly carry enough fuel for that kind of trip.

Nux is somehow converted from his lifetime of religious indoctrination in the course of two minutes, as are all of Immortan Joe's sycophants at the end. They are supposed to believe him as a holy messiah, yet they decide to serve his killers...?

The action was very good for the first half, but gets tiresome about the time that they start flipping people around on poles. The fight choreography starts to get very familiar and the war-rig has already proven completely immune to any kind of damage despite what must have been at least thirty different explosions.

On the point that everyone seems to have latched on to, the idea that this is a feminist film, is completely absurd. The takeaway here is that you matter if you're a young and attractive woman, but if you're old or undesirable then you're just another redshirt killed off without a second's thought. Throughout the whole movie, Joe's pretty wives literally sit in the back seat being completely useless as bad guys crawl up and attack Max from the back or stab Furiosa in the side. This is not Katniss Everdeen finding the strength to save her family and friends. With the exception of Charlize Theron's ass-kicking character the film's central message is nauseatingly regressive "if you're young and attractive then someone will come and save you, and the audience doesn't care one whit if anyone else dies in the process." It is mind-boggling how anyone saw this movie as empowering.

Doesn’t matter? “Fury” should be seen and not heard with spectacular action sequences and psychedelic landscapes reminiscent of Ben-Hur and Lawrence of Arabia. A polygamous water czar is hellbent on capturing a renegade warrior who goes off the beaten path with his precious cargo- and well, Mad Max goes along for the ride. Yet thirty minutes into this film - we’re riding on empty for any movie goer driven by plot, character and dialogue . Miller’s reboot revs its' engines but ends up going in circles.
