Pure Action! Modern day action director should be ashamed of themselves. The only problem for me is - the movie is a bit noisy. I will say this. Bigger screen, better experience. Oh man! love that guitar man scene.
(P.S - it's an R rated movie)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Me and the girlfriend went to see this movie the beginning was fast paced and was showing us the new world. Later on you are introduced to the villains but not introduced to anything overly about them you know the immortal but you don't know anything else about him. The movie lacked any background and after the film I thought I may have missed something in the other movies so after re watching them to find out none of it ties into this sequel and was still left with unanswered question and the obvious "why didn't they just kill the bad guy at the start" once the villain dies it as if all his followers allow the city to be taken over by the villagers. The motive of why they are trying to escape the villain is only stated as him mistreating them and he desires them for healthy children. The part when you find out there is no green land and she falls to her knees and cries has no impact as you don't get any sense of past with the character you get no information of her homeland and why it was so important to bring them there. Not to mention Tom Hardy spends the first part of the film looking like Bane and sounding like a illiterate grunting moron and not the justice seeking, intelligent and experienced fire fighter Mel Gibson plays. This was a chance to continue what fans loved and I feel it didn't come up to pass Expand

I was really disappointed in Mad Max. The budget is certainly apparent on screen, which is pretty to look at, but it felt wasted against a bland story with no plot.

Where the first 2 Mad Max movies pull you in, Thunderdome and this one are not of the same Canon. I cant remember a single line that Max says, and to be honest, I don't get the hype for Theron. She never seemed that crazed, threatening, or powerful to me. Who are we really supposed to care for here?

The movie certainly is not without its good attributes. It is colored and shot beautifully, but is so thin every where else, the stunts and practical effects are wasted.

I wanted more Max, I wanted a follow up to that great scene at the end of "Road Warrior" where its just Max and the "Road". This outing borders on cartoonish, and isn't brutal in any way. Where we are supposed to feel fear, and stress at the mass of pursuit vehicles, all i kept thinking was, "Where do they get all the headlights?", or "for an apocalyptic wasteland, they seem to have no lack of tires or car parts". It just didn't feel in anyway remotely believable.

Many others have already said that it felt like a two-hour movie trailer. Save your money and just watch the trailer on repeat for an hour and you have it.

Bummed.

The story is quick and demands attention from its audience to pick up on character's motives and beliefs without an ounce of spoken exposition. It doesn't follow the stereotypical plot either with small twists here and there to keep everything fresh and exciting. The first major action sequence was so wonderfully executed, probably the only heartpounding sweat inducing action sequence I've ever seen in cinema. This begs me to ask: Why can't Hollywood produce sequels like this instead of the filth they pass off as reboots for beloved movies????

Bravo George Miller.

This is a vivid, strange, at times breathtaking action film with surprisingly strong character development and performances. The plot is pretty straightforward but you do get involved anyways. This over straightforwardness and relatively short length however stops this ride from being able to become the odyssey of redemption it could have been. But it's still undoubtedly one of the most vibrant, visceral, and intense action films ever created. You never feel like the characters are safe, which is an uncertainty lacking in almost all action films. It's the type of cinematic experience that needs to be seen on the big screen despite its minor flaws. This will almost certainly be the best film of the summer, and one the best of the year. Expand

But, beware there is no deep story or dialogue, mad max rarely talks or drives his car. The movie is all about Charlize and driving from point A to point B and then back to point A again. Once you realize this, you get bored. it is really just a bunch of people trying to stop a truck from driving to its destination, not enough unique visuals or gore to keep you interested though. The plot isn't complicated, now are the characters but who cares, how many films do we watch where good films are killed by overly clever or deep plots etc. Mad Max keeps it simple, its a chase, and its all the more brilliant for it, you can just sit and take in all the madness without engaging the brain too much! Mental, disturbing, off the rails, bonkers, fantastic!

My initial thoughts of the film when I left the cinema were "that was mental, but quite good I guess". But then I realised, a week later, I was still thinking about what I had seen, the action, the bizarre charaters, the fact that Charlize Theron totally owned the film....

There is a great plot to be found in the film and there is depth that I didn't totally grasp at first and I think that's down to not being quite in the right frame of mind to watch the film.

Basically, prepare yourselves for a totally crazy film that defies all logic. It's a post apocalyptic adventure where there is no logic. This isn't our time. It's their time. They are The Mad.

The first clear-cut masterpiece of cinema to hit 2015 is Mad Max: Fury Road.

This is a revelation that took me some time to process, for a number of reasons. I’d never seen a Mad Max film before Fury Road and had a slightly apprehensive (though completely unfounded) stigmatic preconception of the franchise as an entertaining exercise in style set to a dystopian backdrop. Even after gorging upon the first few trailers and their overflow of setpieces, I had already pegged Fury Road with almost complete foolish certainty as mere entertainment striving to compensate it’s requisite zeitgeist artifice in creative execution (basically, another summer blockbuster).

Boy, was I off base. I might as well have been spouting blasphemy. Mad Max: Fury Road is an unheralded landmark in action cinema.

I have now witnessed the chaos in it’s entirety twice and, while repeated viewings unearth initially overlooked insight about a work both good and bad, I still have the unfettered urge to see it again in theaters, maybe even for a fourth time.

Where to start? Well, Fury Road is a confection of such sheer magnitude that it is truly difficult to process my overflowing wealth of praise into a cohesively formatted analysis. Granted, I have gathered a few necessary complaints, both microscopic and less so, but the easiest place to begin would be the most tenacious element of Fury Road: the action.

DEAR GOD. Not since **** I can’t remember when) has a parade of such ultra-violence been delivered so unburdened by constraints on both a technical and imaginative level. From every color of the spectrum that makes up the filmmaking process there is groundbreaking work.

The effects work, widely touted for their practicality and absence of excessive CGI, are incendiary (quite literally). The few applications of synthetically altered imagery to be found here not once feel like the crutch, or even the backbone of the film for that matter. Rather, they are applied only when necessity rings. A chase through a flurrying electric sandstorm is the only exception I can make to this statement and, let me tell you, the grandeur, beauty and hulking menace of the almost biblically scaled digital creation warrants the technical splurge. The rest of the film, however, Miller opts for real explosions and heavy stunt work, alongside unique, idiosyncratically crafted production, costuming, and makeup, to serve as the primary aesthetic component of his masterpiece.

There are just SO many exorbitantly decked out pursuit vehicles and quirky, yet lethal makeshift weaponry and SO many detailed, distinct outfits applied to the numerous primary and peripheral characters manifested through vivid makeup and costuming, that it’s consuming this very sentence. I love what the guys over at HitFix said in there coverage of this film about how the visual design of each character speaks volumes about who they are and the kind of completely realized world they live in.

The cinematography is another elephantine achievement, something of a fever dream, really. To have crafted such and elegant presentation overflowing with personality is one thing, but DOP John Seale has captured Miller’s maximalist dystopian canvas with gorgeous, graceful camerawork. Some of the shots achieved in Mad Max: Fury Road astound in the fact that they even exist. Seale films under and over and inside and outside these exhaustingly terse chase sequences with and absolutely GODLIKE clarity and uniformity.

The editing job by Margaret Sixel is a fierce, remorseless work in cinematic refinery. She holds a shot long enough for us to bask in the spectacle, but judges the rhythm of the picture so keenly that every set piece has an opportune chance to amaze. Character interactions via expositional conversations (however few there may be) are edited rapidly, exercising the film of any extraneous dialogue or needless indulgence in this, its weakest aspect (I had to cite one at some point). Fury Road is a brisk 2 hours flat. It more than deserves that runtime and it is devoid of clutter or bloat for that duration.

I could spout zealous praise for Mad Max’s technical merit MUCH further, but sparing regard for the stunt-work present here would be an egregious malfeasance. Simply stated, Fury Road features an array of the most tireless, galvanizing action choreography to grace the multiplex. The not-joking-around, legitimately harrowing coordination of actors in the face of these continually escalating death-machines enlivens cliches perennial to orchestrated violence.

Max is chained to the front of deranged Volkswagen Beetle during a prolonged chase scene, helplessly whipped back and forth at high speeds. Men on vaulting poles, propelled by careening assault vehicles launch themselves at our heroes from atop their wobbling staffs. There is a hand-to-hand chainsaw fight. Countless droogs propel themselves across cars wielding fire-bomb tipped spears. It's bonkers.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The finest post apocalypse movie ever.
For lovely background of this movie, it describes details about hopeless desert life. There are several factors for making strong focus in movie, the world view, character, music.
Newclear war cause desertification and shorten human's life. In this movie except little of the people have the killing diseases even the boss of the Citadel(the city). For that reason, the short, hopeless lives keep running on the road with fearless. It makes super cool anal sucking action.
The max main character of this movie, has several past's problem with little girl's phantom, but the movie never tells about his life before newclear war. However we just know that phantome makes sick of him, why he doesn't want to tell his name to others. He didn't talk much, but we did understand much. The immotan, the boss of the citadel with warboys have a killing disease, so they want to make pure(without disease) descendant. The super hot chicks are brearer for immotan, for not certain reason, they want to escape from immotan. The furiosa(right?) want to escape Citadel too, so she breaks fence with those chicks, it makes immotan pissed off, that is why those whole crazy races has started.
It was the most fancy thing that the big truck with guitar guy. The guitar guy is the member of the warboys(The immotan's men), he plays guitar when the race begin. That guitar sounds make movie more exciting. The most super cool option, I think.
For those reason, i gave this movie the ten.

Charlize Theron was the true protagonist of the movie. While Tom Hardening has a knack for playing brooding characters (Warrior), he was clearly eclipsed by Charlize Theron in this film.
Arguably, Charlize Theron seemed to be the true protagonist of the film and in fact carried this movie. I have no doubt this would have been a much better film and story had her character been overtly central from the beginning, rather than the protagonist behind the protagonist. Perhaps movie moguls were afraid to alienate fans of the original male-dominated storyline, but that fear hurt this movie in my opinion. When you have an acting talent such as Theron on board--take full advantage of it!
This is not a movie with a lot of dialogue. So as expected, action scenes dominate this movie. But for me, it is those brief moments of dialogue, and those magical moments of non-verbal closeups on characters that are crucial to the story line and allow you to connect to the inner turmoil of the characters.
Up until Charlize Theron's character comes to life on the screen halfway thru the movie, the story is relatively dry. Some actors have that uncanny ability to speak a thousand words thru their eyes; Mel Gibson (original Mad Max movies) has that ability, and Charlize Theron has that ability in this movie. However, I didn't get that from Tom Harding in this film. Rather, he seemed disconnected from his character throughout the movie. Which is surprising considering his great performance in Warrior. In my opinion, an actor should be able to connect with the audience even if they are playing a disconnected character--that's the magic...To that end, I should mention Nicholas Hoult's performance was quite tangible and almost quantifiable in this film.
I'm not a fan of 3-D, and seeing this film in 3-D unfortunately didn't change my opinion. You still don't get that wrap-around affect that would create a truly immersional experience, and the colors are never as vibrant and crisp as in non-3D movies. I'm still waiting to be surprised--hopefully in my lifetime...
Disclaimer, I'm a fan of Charlize Theron. She's an excellent and seasoned actress willing to step up to the plate and show true acting chops in movies like Monster for which she won an Academy Award. I'm also a fan of Mel Gibson, so perhaps Tom Harding just had big shoes to fill...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I must have seen a totally different movie than the rest of the critics and reviewers. This was a movie full of cars, gun-fights, and explosions that somehow manages to be boring. The script feels like the first draft for an undergraduate screenwriting class, with Max uttering little more than a few grunts throughout the full two hours, a plan that flies in the face of all the rules for the universe that have already been set, and religious zealots who turn to celebrate the people who killed their messiah. Throw in some sloppy editing and bad pacing and this was ultimately a forgettable film.

Blowing the rocks in the mountain pass already proved to be little more than a temporary road block the first time, yet it is somehow a permanent solution to keeping out the war boys on the return trip. Watching Max try to convince Furiosa that this was a good idea was hilariously painful, especially once you realize that driving 160 days in any direction anywhere on Earth will eventually get you to an ocean, and that no motorcycle could possibly carry enough fuel for that kind of trip.

Nux is somehow converted from his lifetime of religious indoctrination in the course of two minutes, as are all of Immortan Joe's sycophants at the end. They are supposed to believe him as a holy messiah, yet they decide to serve his killers...?

The action was very good for the first half, but gets tiresome about the time that they start flipping people around on poles. The fight choreography starts to get very familiar and the war-rig has already proven completely immune to any kind of damage despite what must have been at least thirty different explosions.

On the point that everyone seems to have latched on to, the idea that this is a feminist film, is completely absurd. The takeaway here is that you matter if you're a young and attractive woman, but if you're old or undesirable then you're just another redshirt killed off without a second's thought. Throughout the whole movie, Joe's pretty wives literally sit in the back seat being completely useless as bad guys crawl up and attack Max from the back or stab Furiosa in the side. This is not Katniss Everdeen finding the strength to save her family and friends. With the exception of Charlize Theron's ass-kicking character the film's central message is nauseatingly regressive "if you're young and attractive then someone will come and save you, and the audience doesn't care one whit if anyone else dies in the process." It is mind-boggling how anyone saw this movie as empowering.

First and foremost I have not seen any other MM film besides the first one so I have no other film in the series to compare to.

When I go into a film like MAD MAX FURY ROAD, I expect explosions, mayhem, violence and action! action! action! If that's what you want to see, then that's exactly what you're going to get. Now as far as finding characters to connect with emotionally and relate to in your past and present then save your money.

This film has a very cut and paste plot not at all deep or emotionally driven but again you paid to see Mad Max, not Dear John or PS I Love You. The duration of the film is spent riding shotgun with four Characters and each one is a blast.

One thing I enjoyed and hated about this film was the fact that even though Max was the title character he had more of a supportive role rather than being the driving force. It could have very well been titled Furiosa: Fury Road and I wouldn't have argued.

Does it stack up to the other films? I wouldn't know. I feel like this film isn't a sequel but rather just a tale set in the Mad Max universe that functions well on it's own. Definitely worth the price of admission

I haven'tMad Max Fury Road is directed by George Miller starring Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, and Nicholas Hoult and is a continuation to the Mad Max series making this the 4th film. Ladies, Gentlemen, Mad Max Fury Road, was Mind-Blowing. I haven't seen such amazing action sequences in a movie since movies like the Indiana Jones Trilogy, Aliens, Die Hard, Terminator 1 and 2, Kill Bill Vol.1 and 2, and the Matrix! This movies action is unbelievably revolutionary and original that it will make you so pumped to see the movie again and again. Now what makes this movie feel so unique, and so action packed, is its beautiful shots and smooth paced action shots. The big plus is that most of the action in this film is made by practical effects! Lately we have been watching lots of movies with unbelievable amounts of CGI, which is not a bad thing in some ways. I enjoy CGI once and a while it can sometimes be amazing and sometimes terrible. I recently saw Avengers 2 which was full of CGI and I hugely enjoyed the film. But the practical effects in this film were by far better than any of the CGI effects ever released out in the Cinematic Universe!

Characters - Tom Hardy plays Max who is a man mentally troubled by his past, trying to find a path of hope through a futuristic post apocalyptic deserted world. Tom Hardy as Max I felt was a really good cast, especially since Hardy has been doing hugely well in his career. I didn't though feel like his character wasn't too impressive, but he still did a great job as Max. Charlize Theron plays Furiosa a women who is trying to escape with a special group of (I won't spoil what) cargo. She was a really badass character in this films and was a surprising addition to the Mad Max Universe. Nicholas Hoult plays Nux who was honestly my favorite character in the film because I found him the most relatable too. Nux is a member of Immortan Joe's settlement known as The Citadel, but later tries to ally himself with Max and Furiosa. Nux is corrected man who believes that he is destined for something great. I felt Nux was the most emotionally touching character that you can truly care for. Hugh Keays-Byrne plays Immortan Joe who is the main villain who I felt was a pretty badass villain in the film. He wasn't anything real special to the film, but I think he is a terrific addition to the Mad Max series.

Plot - The plot is overall pretty simple. Furiosa is trying to get away from the settlement "The Citadel" with a special cargo when she later runs into Max who doesn't know whether to ally with her, or not. While this occurs, warriors from the Citadel chase down Furiosa throughout a straight through action packed, consistent film. This movie is straight forward action, there's not a ton of dialogue but it works and leaves the audience drooling with "Ahhh".

Score/Soundtrack - I'm not really big on listening to a musical score in a film, but in this film the score is so pumping and exhilarating, you can't help but notice it. Like in Indiana Jones, there is consistent music that just pumps you up and makes you really really excited. This film had that kind of score that can greatly improve your enjoyment for the film.

Action Sequences/Special Effects - The action and effects in this film is what makes Mad Max Fury Road, Mad Max Fury Road. The action in this film is so well directed with smooth and beautifully paced camera-work. Amazing stunt work that just can't make you not geek up and get excited. There was a man with a electric guitar that shot out huge flames playing on a truck with huge surround sound. Tell me that's not awesome!!! The practical effects in the film made me so amazed. Every shot you saw in this film could be a humongous poster that you can put on the Movie Theater walls. Every shot you see you can look at with "Wow" because its so beautiful and awesome! There's this one shot in particular that shows most of the vehicles lined up with a very mixed color sky background that was probably the most enjoyable landscape shot I have ever scene in a film. I am going to see this film in Theaters so many more times just to see the action in this film.

Pros: -Great Casting -Fabulous Action Unlike Anything! -Amazing Effects -Great Casting -Motivating Original Score -Beautiful Landscape Shots -Interesting Narration -Very Unique to Many Action Films of Today

Cons: -I COULDN'T FIND ANY!!!!!!!

However, the happy ending and the general tone of the film, apart from one twist that is surprising enough, are not dark and bitter as they should for such a movie, and for such a setting. The title "Mad Max" is somewhat misleading, the true heroin of the story being Furiosa, who makes all the important decisions and has way more character development than Max. But that's not really a problem, since he doesn't seem to have a lot of personality. Anyway, Mad Max is one helluva show, and probably one of the best action flicks I've seen for a long time.
Also: this movie contains an electric guitar with a flamethrower. That should convince any sensible person that it's worthy of two hours of your time.

Negative reviews seem to be limited to 2 camps. Dudes that question their sexuality and therefore can't stand to see any woman in an action movie that isn't completely hopeless or those that thought they were seeing a masterpiece theater show and walked into the wrong screening. Was Alien a bad movie because it had a strong female character and flamethrowers? Max is still clearly the biggest badass around and if you need more character development watch the first 3 movies so you know his story.

People really wanted to go to a serious movie, with a serious plot, containing realism. Are you kidding me? It's like going to a Tarantino movie and expecting meditations on life or a deeply philosophical movie. It's cinema. It's art. Visual art. That is what "Mad Max: Fury Road" is. Art. Visual art. The characters are not bad for a movie that, at its core, is clearly an action movie. I mean take this movie and compare it with "Furious 7". It's like comparing Hemingway ("MM:FR") with children's books ("F7").

People don't know how to take things just how they are and interpret when necessary, not all the time. Some movies are just here to watch them, shut up, go home and think "oh, that George Miller guy just pulled off one of the greatest action movies ever". Yes, this movie makes the Marvel universe and the Fast & Furious franchise look inept for a lack of a better word.

Really loved the movie. If you like movies, you should go. If you like feel good stories, you shouldn't go.

Fantastic movie according to most people, kind of crappy not function mess according to others.

Why the artistic spin in the middle of the movie? We switch rock music, explosions and car races for symphonic music, monochromatic shots and "deep" life messages? That part broke the movie for me.
Then we continue with more explosions and races, but now with circus performance like stunts? Where that come from and why it is in mad max?
Why is there this feminist narrative : evil old diseased white guys destroyed the world and with army of violent fanatic white guys enslaved people. luckily are brought down by few of virtuous women.
so deep message, so progressive, so original...
Lets not skip plot holes and realism, it was supposed to be action movie.

But seriously, what the duck?

Mad Max: Fury Road is not non-stop action, but it's the closest I've ever seen to actually achieving and earning that praise. Within the first 25 minutes, you've got a chase scene fit for the finale of most films, and it just keeps building from there. The film is like the cover of a metal album mixed with guns and the greatest monster truck rally / destruction derby you've ever scene. I can't sell this movie enough. If you like action movies, you will like, neigh, you will LOVE this. Gosh . . . What a Lovely Day!

Though I have not seen the first three, I opted to see this one due to the great word of mouth and ultimately, I was incredibly satisfied. With an absolutely riveting world created that seems vast and unique in nature, Fury Road feels just like an epic action film should. Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, and Nicholas Hoult, are all fantastic, especially Hoult who really steals the show at times. The makeup is great and completely convincing. However, the real star here for me was the beautiful cinematography (which is gorgeous btw) and phenomenal special effects, which were the definition of perfection. The car chases featured both very well, which is why those scenes were undoubtedly my favorite and probably some of the most exhilarating and well plotted car chases I have seen in a film. Truly a great action film, if I was an action junkie, this would be a 10/10, but I am not. All the same, this is still a great film that provides all the heart stopping action and thrills that it should. Expand

Tom Hardy and Charlise Theron are very good as the central characters. The overall story is fine too. What separates this very good action movie from great action movies is (as it often is) the bad guy. The main villain is awful and mean and vicious. But there is nothing explaining his evil. All of his followers are equally unmotivated. While the characters of Theron and Hardy get a great deal of back story and motivation, the villains alas, do not. It still is very entertaining, well filmed and well edited. And I love action movies too. They are my guilty pleasure. This just did not have enough for me. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Simply the worst movie I have seen in years. Filling 2 hours with non-stop action does not make a movie good. Especially if the action is repetitive (pale guys jumping on and off a truck). Sometimes you can guess the movie was filmed at a very low speed and was later accelerated in the montage, like when the cars flip over.
The wives don't fit in the picture, apparently they just wanted to add some spice to the movie. It gets funny when they attempt to act. Of course, one of the wives is pregnant and her belly starts to hurt at a quite unpleasant time, sad coincidence.
You come out of the theater asking yourself what the hell you just spent 2 hours looking at. Definitely not a masterpiece, even if all critics around the world seem to think otherwise. It's in fact so bad that i signed up to metacritic just to write a honest review about how bad it was.
Apparently if you write a random hyperbole about a oil-monarchy and how unfair it is to its peasants with some totally random heros fighting it, you are guaranteed of success. It's so deep because I can relate it easily to the world i live in without having to think too much. Masterpiece. Bravo.

put your theater money in the blender, it'll be more entertaining and less time consuming.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The art of nothing or an ode to skin heads, would've been a more appropriate title rather than Mad Max. I don't think the audience got a good grasp on how Max was Mad. Maybe part 2 will further unravel his character. Aside from the skin heads and the demonic s***, I really enjoyed the 2 hour long action pack car chase movie. I love the cinematography and the too hot sex slaves, in addition to the Salvador Dali surrealism feel to it. But as a minority, I didn't know rather to be offended or entertained. Expand

For the longest time, having watched dozens of action movies, I assumed that you can't possibly make a movie made of pure loud action for two hours straight. Mad Max proved me wrong.

It started with a loud bang and that never stopped until the credits started rolling. The movie instantly throws the build-up part out of the window, jumping straight to the main point of itself - noise, big cars and explosions. And not the Michael Bay type of explosions for the sake of explosions. Every crash, every hit makes sense.

Character start at near to no relationship to each other. And not a single minute of the movie is spent developing them with nothing going on around. All character traits are revealed and developed during all the mayhem, going on around. And when it isn't shoved in your face, you start to appreciate and understand, what is going on, by yourself.

[Spoilers below]

Even though quite a few character die throughout the movie, we realise that it happens during a massive chase and movie makes sure you don't have time to mourn fallen heroes. A swift move of respect is made before refocusing on the task in hand - trying to survive fire, bullets and spears, heading in your direction.

Brilliant movie, which will make you hold your breath for all 2 hours and make you want more.

What a lovely day, indeed.

Embodied in Tom Hardy's exceedingly competent hands, Mad Max has been flawlessly and unforgettably resurrected from the bloodstained sands of director George Miller's breathtaking nightmarish vistas like a phoenix and surges forth on the muscular crest of this propulsive thrill ride, fuelled by a potent cocktail of octane, testosterone, diesel fuel and masterfully rendered insanity.

Let it be said, partly as an endorsement and partly as a word of warning: for the duration of its two hour running time, "Fury Road" never relents. It exerts a special kind of hold over your senses - an experience guaranteed to burn your eyes out of your sockets and shatter your eardrums. It simply never stops - just roars and thrashes its way through 120 minutes of mesmeric, unadulterated madness. It sustains a raw and palpable tension throughout. This is the most confident and convicted reinvention of the blockbusters since "The Dark Knight". This is genre fusion - a Spaghetti western, a B-movie, a dystopian thriller, a chase and a survivalist drama. It is an examination of the human condition in the harshest conditions. It has B-movie stylings, but is assuredly wrapped in blockbuster packaging and marries the two seamlessly and perfectly. Accordingly, every technical detail is uniquely refined so that it explodes from the screen - the cinematography, editing, sound engineering, score, cohesive direction, and the performances (especially that of Charlize Theron, whose nuanced yet sensational portrayal of Furiosa is one that is immediately iconic).

No amount of hosannas however can adequately answer the main question associated with this movie. Yet I will now try to answer that question now in four words.

The question: is "Mad Max: Fury Road" worth the hype?

The answer: yes. Oh God yes.

As a Hummungus(pun intended) fan of Mel Gibson's portrayal of Max Rockatansky,so i could not wait to see how Tom Hardy would fill in the shoes of The Road Warrior, since his acting material for the last couple of years, has been nothing short of astonishing, and once again he does a superb job of modernizing the character for the younger audiences, while also keeping enough of sadness and despair from his performance that reminds the fans that this is the man who lost everything, tried to fix it and went mad. However, the real show-stealer in the film is Charlize Theron who plays a real female version of The Road Warrior,Imperator Furiosa, whose name strucks fear and demands respect amongst Immortan Joe's army(whose actor pllayed Toecutter,in the original Mad Max),both play their parts stunningly and Furiosa is going to be remembered in History as "one of the most badass female warrior in film history",she's that good.Nicholas Hoult turns in the usually charismatic performance that is indeed very expected of him,and his character Nux provides craziness and innocence wrapped up into one package or a blood bag.Immortan Joe's wives provide the traditional damsels in distress ,yet George MIller still makes them strong and independent by having each partake in a moment critical to success in victory in one of film's many exciting action seqeuences.

The action ,the cars, the stunts, the choreography and George Miller himself, are the real stars of the film.Miller finds strange beauty inside the chaos and destruction of the film,he uses practical effects to a degree no other director has used in a movie like this, even better than the original trilogy's action combined, the level of cinematography and the astonishing shots of the desoalte wasteland look amazing, and will definetely leave some breathless. What George Miller also manages to bring back is tension and the feeling of vulnerability to the main protagonist, due to careful construction of each sequence, knowledge of geographic location of cars and the environment and the careful use of cotraptions and poles that swing back and forth and force characters into unexpected and dangerous situations. It's nail-biting really and by the time the film's done, you'll find yourself sweating and positively exhausted, from all the action films i've seen(and i've seen many)this one has some of the best car combat in cinema and some of the most gorgeous cinematography to date,it is a visual masterpiece, and George Miller is one of the few rare directors that don't lose their talent as they get older, and pack as much kinetic punch as some of the younger directors in the industry.Last, but not least the score of the film is terrific and totally rocks, heavy metal and drums have never been utilized this well,Junkie XL has outdone himself and made a very fitting and detailed musical composition to the film, that gets intergrated into the story of War boys and how Guitarists and drummers get used for rallying up warriors together and setting them in a fighting mood, clever writing from Miller and McCarthy results in a concept this ridicoulously over-the-top making more sense than you would imagine and pack thrills that most heavy metal concerts can't.

George Miller has returned with an enormous bang and revived this long-forgotten but legendary franchise and set it roaring on the fury road with vicious speed and even more meaning, simply put it is not only the best movie of the year so far,it is also the best movie you'll see this summer and one of the best action films i've ever seen, welcome back Max,you've been missed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What the hell did I just see? This is a film about a bunch of completely insane loonies on a road trip from hell, through a post-apocalyptic waste-land, to save a bunch of people from a totally nuts scary looking boss dude who drips feeds water to the rest of the population. They even have a crazy guy playing a crazy guitar with fire shooting out the neck of the guitar, on a truck. It was very AC/DC. But aside from all this, this film moves at break-neck speed. It has some of the best stunts (if not THE best) ever performed for the screen. It has a good plot, and acting. But most importantly, it has a VISION. And that is what I think makes it great. George Miller is a master of filming action. It shows in every scene. This film is more like a ride than a film. Expand

The original Mad Max was uniquely odd and the second film, if memory serves correctly, was exciting if a tad more conventional. Beyond Thunderdome was just a disaster. A copper bottomed clinker that had Tina Turner appear for novelty value in addition to a load of dishevelled snotty nosed brats. This combination ensured thatt the turn off was complete. Thankfully, Fury Road is considerably better than that debacle, but is some way behind the earlier two instalments and is certainly not worthy of the euphoric reviews and praise that have been heaped upon it by both the critics and public, singing in unison for once it would appear. Production values are sound and it must be said that visually the film is an absolute delight. John Seale’s cinematic compositions for day and night are constantly impressive and there is one corker of a moment when what looks like a sand dune suddenly metamorphosis’s into Max (Tom Hardy). There is also much stylisation in the battle scenes with jump cuts adding immeasurably to the impact and editing that moves along at the rate of knots. The sound is another strong plus and whilst there is plenty of appropriate menace in the score one is unprepared for just how beautiful the music is here.
So what’s wrong with it? Well, unfortunately, the story is as light as a feather. This is basically just a two hour chase movie and only the most dedicated Max fans will not be tempted to give in to the unerring crash, bang, and wallop pointlessness of it all, despite the many technical strengths on display. Of the actors, Charlize Theron is really rather good in a role that is a million miles away from anything she has ever done before. Nicholas Hoult, unrecognisable under impressive make-up, is ok, but the weakest of the three leads. I use the term ‘lead’ loosely as Tom Hardy’s Max seems to be relegated to a supporting role here, even if the actor turns in another one of his customarily good performances. There is no doubting that Hardy is a better actor than Gibson, but for my money Max 1 and 2 remain the yardsticks by which the other films should be judged.

This movie was a spectacle... a top notch spectacle. Every shot was a painting. Every concept was over the top. Every scene was a 20 minute non-stop buzz saw of guzzoline-filled action.

What this film lacked was the sense of isolation found in Road Warrior & Thunderdome. Part of the problem was the scale and budget of the film. Everything was bigger and more densely populated. Adding to that was the fact there there was such little down time, particularly at the beginning of the film. It gave me the feeling that world was made up of relatively densely populated and advanced enclaves that were in pretty close proximity to each other. Sure, the main civilization was run by a totalitarian madman but other than that it was well organized, running efficiently and generally in great shape. What happened to the rag-tag tribes that could barely scratching out an existence from a deserted post-apocalyptic wasteland?

While technically and cinematically incredible, I think Miller couldn't see the forest for the trees and forgot what made the last two films so haunting and memorable.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I saw as a screener (for free), without any real expectations, and having not looked into any early reviews. In the end I spent most of the movie making snide comments to my friends and laughing at how implausible and poorly thought out it was, wishing there was a plot. It did become so ridiculous it was fun once in a while, but mostly it was just pointless and weird. I proceeded to check the reviews online when I got home thinking "this movie is going to get destroyed" - but no, everyone LOVES it?!! After reading about the "practical" stunts etc. - sure I'm impressed, but I still think overall the movie is so stupid that I signed up for a metacritic account just to say so! I could generate a list of 100 ways this is ridiculous (like if bullets and gas were in limited supply, why is everyone shooting guns and flamethrowers into the sky?) I truly felt nothing for these characters and was quite glad when it ended (with the "good guys" just dumping all the water into the desert!). There are other reviews here that more accurately capture why this movie makes no sense (look for the red reviews) - I just wanted to express my confusion as to the widespread acclaim for this movie. I guess I just missed the point. Expand

The acclaim that this movie has received is undeserved, as it is just like any other action movie out there, it does nothing special. The times that the movie does take a turn from the two hour long car chase are pretty mediocre with unconvincing acting all around, really. It really is this simple: Mad Max: Fury Road is about as pure an action film as you will ever get.

The simplicity does not end there as the world of Mad Max is a world where actions speak louder than words and to slow down means to die. Based upon these traits of the film, the essence is in those actions. In this day and age of movies filled with excessive dialogue and needless commentary and filler, it is refreshing to see a movie that focuses on the action not the words. Pure action movie! As a result the cinematography comes into play as well and the film is beautifully shot! Colors explode on the screen and crash sequences are given the same treatment as a Sam Peckinpah death scene: Slow motion ballet of destruction and death. The script might be light on dialogue, but this means there must be an economy of language and as such it must continually say something and reveal something and it does. Miller does not offer explanations for things. We must fill in the blanks. As a result this simple plot becomes more complex as we supply interpretation. This can make many people feel uneasy. Yes, I said it, this film is more cerebral than the negative critics are making it. This complexity lies in the details weather it be the writing on the wall declaring that people are not things to be owned or the alter where War Boys pray before doing Joe's dirty work or the message of hope and the futile realization that in this wasteland hope is indeed a mistake. Even when the film comes to an end, there is no true indicator that everyone will "make it out" but they now have a fighting chance. But it is not the ending that matters the most, but what happens from opening to ending. In this world movement is life and survival and vibrancy. We see a myriad of cinematic tropes manifest: false hope, religion as control, mobility versus immobility, gender roles and the confusion between them, these are just a few. When I watched the film I didn't want to be analytical. I saved that for afterward and to my surprise there are significant elements open to critical analysis.

The final analysis however is that the film should be watched by anyone wishing to see a well made action film that grips you from start to finish and to be honest... this has not been the case for many films of the past decade.

If you were to remove all dialogue from the movie, it would be the same movie. The characters are shallow and you end up wanting everyone to die because you dont care about them at all. However, the camera shots, action scenes and stunts were the best ive ever seen. Unfortunately the cgi enhancing the explosions and action scenes were mediocre. Im giving a 6/10 for a great movie without a story. Expand

Your eyes will melt watching this, and when your synapses in your brain finally catch up it's over - 2 hours of the best road movie action ever. Mike drop.

You want more? Ok. As an Australian I'm hugely proud this film finally got made.

As an Australian I'm hugely proud this film finally got made. Accents aside (what's Tom Hardy doing to the 20 words he has to say?!) the women drive (sorry) this insane roller coaster along and we "witness" it all through Max. Epic, crazy, provocative, evocative. I've been twice already.

What a non-stop ride - the stunts were beyond impossible and were clear and visible unlike most action films with lots of cgi. The soundtrack kept you on the edge of your seat and the visuals were wholly original and extremely gob-smacking. I loved it from beginning to end. This film is totally insane - you cannot keep still or quiet as the spectacle unfolds. Expand

Mad Max: Fury Road has the rare trailer that accurately depicts the experience that you are going to get walking into that movie theater. It's almost non-stop action with a minimalist plot.

Now I have seen some people complain about that aspect of the movie - the plot of the film and little character development. And I have to admit that it did grate on me a little, my more accurate score would be 8.5. But that is a very minor nitpick because a movie that is a visual spectacle would only suffer in having a complicated plot. The story in Mad Max: Fury Road is simple, but it works.

Typically saying "much action, little plot" would be an insult, but George Miller manages to create a masterpiece that, similarly to last year's Lego Movie, puts to shame the inferiors and shows just how glorious things could be when done right.

Serenely orchestrated and crafted, Mad Max is a masterpiece wrapped up (albeit quite brutally) in the apocalyptic wasteland of Australia. The pacingSerenely orchestrated and crafted, Mad Max is a masterpiece wrapped up (albeit quite brutally) in the apocalyptic wasteland of Australia. Epic and unexpectedly moving, the film is a thrill and a spectacle from beginning to finish. The pacing of the film was brilliant with every break a much needed affair following what has got to be some of the most amazing set piece stunts one have ever seen on the big screen.
Although we will generally remember Mad Max as an action masterpiece, it was the quieter times that this film really strikes a chord for audiences to care for its surprisingly engaging characters. The backdrop of the desolate landscape provides some of the best wide angle shots in cinematic history and the tone of the adrenaline pumping action always leave pulses of excitement and thrill for the next invigorating engagement.
The imagery of the film is both surreal and imaginative. I acknowledge that some set and character designs may not be for everyone's taste but one cannot deny that George Miller has a daring vision for his films. With total confidence, the film exists in its own world without the need to tiresomely weigh down the story with back story or explanations. The brilliant aspect of the world of Mad Max is there isn't a specific shot or conversation that feels out of place to illustrate a feature of the its unique environment or culture. Everything is just there for the audience to see and discover and eventually come to accept as a dramatic re imagination of the reality which we exist in.
Overall, I felt the film to be a call back to the old days when people came to cinemas to have an experience. To have an opportunity to see something truly special. Mad Max is certainly such a ride. This is a definite must-see. (and a worthy one in 3-D too)

The landscape is bleaker and the action is more pumped. Tom Hardy & Charlize Theron play rebels who are trying to escape the evil overlords, or at least outrun them, but forget story and dialogue: This is all about spectacular stunts, incredible art direction and furious action. The relentless pace and virtually non-stop clashes are sometimes so hectic that it's hard to figure out what's happening. The thick accents and noisy sound sometime make the dialogue a challenge, but it doesn't really matter. The massive soundtrack by Junkie XL adds another level of intensity. This film is inventive in the extreme and dizzying in it's bravura direction. Expand

So basically another Mad Max film!! But I’m gonna go out on a limb and say this one’s my new favourite If you liked the previous entries, this is definitely one you should check out. George Miller is on fantastic form with this film and it’s amazing to think it took him this long to re-capture it. Tom Hardy is well cast in his role, though I do believe Nicholas Hoult is the best actor in the whole film and both of them complement Charlize Theron’s performance very well. There is never a dull moment, the characters are really good and I actually think this would be a pretty good jumping on point for newcomers. I would recommend seeing the first two movies prior to seeing this and some long time fans may be a bit confused by some elements that have been added to the film, mainly Max’s flashbacks. This is absolutely brilliant, though be warned there is a bit of a gore factor at points, though it’s not to the extent that it will be absolutely wince inducing. Many people are calling this the best action movie of the last 5 years and while I personally still think that honour belongs to the Avengers this is still a contender for that title.

All that’s left to say is what a movie, WHAT A LOVELY MOVIE!!!
