Way too many characters and a few sleepy performances ensure this will likely have more appeal as a sleeper sci-fi fantasy than specifically an MCU movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. E-Value: 5
Acting: 8
Plot: 6

The twenty-sixth instalment of Marvel Cinematic Universe features another group of superheroes called Eternals which is not only very much unknown superheroes but even lesser known heroes than Black Panther, Ant-Man and even Shang-Chi. Originally slated for release at the end of 2020, the movie was delayed until now due to COVID-19 pandemic where theatres all over the world were closed.

A long time ago, a group of an extraterrestrial superpowered race called Eternals which consists of Ajak (played by Salma Hayek), Sersi (Chan), Ikaris (Madden), Kingo, Sprite, Phastos, Makkari, Druig, Gilgamesh, and Thena (Jolie) were sent to Earth by the Celestial Arishem to exterminate a monstrous extraterrestrial race called Deviants from wiping all life forms in the universe. Once they wiped out the Deviants, the Eternals went their separate ways and lived among humanity for many years.

In the present day and after the events of Avengers: Endgame, Sersi and Sprite are living in London and the former is currently in a relationship with her human boyfriend, Dane Whitman (played by Kit Harrington). They are attack by a Deviant called Kro until Ikaris show up and save them but Kro escape. Realising that the Deviants have return, they travel to South Dakota to meet up with Ajak but she was already killed by Kro when they arrive. With the death of Ajak, the Eternals have to gather the others who are living in other countries to fight against the returning Deviants.

For the first time ever, I find this movie not so good like the other past movies. Normally, MCU movies are all great and even the weaker ones like 2008’s The Incredible Hulk and 2013’s Thor: The Dark World are enjoyable to watch but this one I don’t find it enjoyable. For one, the main characters are less interesting because there are too many characters in the main role which leave very little room for character developements for each of them. Salma Hayek’s role was underutilised as she was killed off early. It was a total waste for her to be this role. I was also disappointed that Kumail Nanjani who played Kingo did not participate in the final act. Despite this, the casts still give their best performance especially Lauren Ridloff who does not any lines and she relied on sign language which she does a great job.

The pacing in this movie is also bad as the movie keep switching from current events and flashbacks back and forth to the point I find it hard to follow. Combined with 157 minutes runtime and the lack of character developments, this movie is really boring at the end of the day. While the movie still have funny, heartwarming moments, great special effects and direction from Chloe Zhao, they are not enough to save the movie. I felt that Eternals would be better of as a Disney+ series at best or at least, start off as a series first before having a movie. As part of the tradition of the franchise, stay back for mid credits scene and post credits scene.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Eternals is, unfortunately, a failed experiment. It had to happen sooner or later. I'm a fan of the MCU, and frankly sometimes shocked at the overall level of quality they put out, so even when the Eternals trailer looked "off", I still saw it opening night. I'll repeat this is a failed, actually bad movie, and bad in all the completely predictable ways one would guess when pairing a great director with zero big-budget green screen experience and two cousins who've never written a full-length movie. I'm not talking about the content. The problems are technical. Marvel has thus far had good luck pulling in quirky or indy creators and putting them through the machine to come out with great products, but here it had the opposite effect.

They brought in Chloe Zhao to add a sense of realism, organic character work, and naturalistic location shooting. That's great. She tried. However, much of the time it looks like these actors have no idea what or in which direction they should be looking at, or how they're supposed to react. The whole opening had about as much emotion and nuance as a video game cut-scene. This is a directorial failure.

Ultimately you end up with a bunch of characters looking stoic reading lines with odd inflections. It's exactly what you'd guess would happen if someone had never directed around these types of effects, and it's even more apparent when contrasted with great scenes like being introduced to Phastos' family which is warm, serious, and funny all at the same time.

Shooting outdoors is also great, but if whoever is mixing the sound can't get around the wind it'll sound muddy. Using natural light is great, but damn if you're on a schedule and only have so many takes to get things right. This is fine if you have a simple setup, maybe not so much here.

Let's talk about the script and story. The Firpo cousins were brought in. Well, what happens when you hire someone who's never written a feature-length film and ask them to pen an epic that starts at the beginning of time? You get a disjointed mess. Leaving out that the concept of billions of years is specific to earth circling the sun and has little bearing on what a Celestial would think of as time, the entire, and I mean the entire plot hinges on a single line about how celestials need to a specific type of intelligent life to absorb or something to be born?? Why in the **** would this be the case. Please explain further.

Dialogue. This seems like a script a committee of college students would be happy with. I understand there are a lot of characters, but really having everyone say everyone else's name in every scene while reminding us about deviants just shows such a lack of faith in the audience. It also left no space for any actual conversations. In fact, the only character to seem like they had something to say and was enjoying themselves was Kuman the butler.

Further, I'm seeing posts about how this is the first Marvel movie with a sex scene, but seriously showing two character's bare shoulders and having them squeeze out the lines "I love you (full name)" then "I love you (full name)" is maybe one of the least realistic moments in a movie about ancient gods.

Seriously the longer I think about this movie the worse it is, which is such a shame because everyone involved is technically good at what they do, but together with all the money one could ask for, they made an exceptionally bad product. Heck, even the mid-credits scene made no sense. We know this is BlackKnight. We know Excaliber was on the ship, but we also know he didn't get a chance to tell anyone, so how did the sword get to him...

A lot of the negative reviews are preaching some anti-woke/anti-inclusion messaging. That's terrible and the hate is painful to read. That's not anywhere close to where I'm coming from. I'm super happy to have some thoughtful diverse adult drama mixed into my Marvel candy. However, they still need to make a good movie and this wasn't it.

Next time Marvel wants to hire the Firpos... Don't. If you want to hire Chloe Zhao, do it, but find a project actually in line with her skills as opposed to fitting it into a project like this. Oh and by the way I see a lot of people blaming Marvel for how this worked out. Make no mistake this is on her and the writers. Other teams have come in and figured and they really really didn't. Marvel on the other hand has a track record of making it work, and for all the people going to see this hoping somehow to not see a Marvel movie, what the **** are you thinking? Why are you even going to see it if you don't want to see a Marvel movie?

The answer is Eternals, a movie that stands out even among other MCU attrocities, like Captain Marvel and GotG2, as being one of the worst. This is pretty much a discount Zack Snyder movie, with the worst traits of those movies but without any of the good ones. The movie is boring, badly acted and, for a 200 million dollar production, it looks like a Netflix Original.

Marvel got high on their success of Endgame and thought they could turn any turd into gold. Maybe with a better direction they could have gotten something out of this, but as it is now it's a movie not even Disney shills can defend with a straight face. I'll give it a 1 because the Celestials were cool.

Eternals is an exceptionally beautiful Film that tries to live up to the great expectations of a massive action epic but is mostly let down by a bright but unstable cast of enigmatic characters who try to pass it off as thematic with emotional depth. The magnitude of Eternals is unlike anything I've seen in the MCU so far, but it also results in a film that just has too much on its plate. While I admire the MCU for taking a chance by offering an ambitious and unique narrative, the script and storytelling just did not live up to the film's ambitious ideals. Expand

I was really excited for this movie and went to see this with good expectations but nothing went as expected.

Script was loose and screenplay was very shattered. There were problems with editing also. Direction also felt weak, didn't seem like it was directed by Oscar winner director. Story was weak and childish and it looked like if too much was added in the movie. This could have been easily two part movie.

Overall, this movie was an unexpected disappointment. Hope, they improve in sequels.

It's overwhelming to get to know almost a dozen new characters, some of which are very uninteresting. And, I don't know, but I found Sersi obnoxious.

And don't get me wrong, I'm all about representation, but we all know Marvel and every company in the world get into it just to don't look bad. As for the structure, 'Eternals' plays in the same ballpark as every other MCU film: a bunch of dudes dressed like Power Rangers fighting the bad guy to save the world. Oh, and for the bad guy I mean the deviant monster that had no purpose at all. Chloé Zhoe may have tried to add some depth to the characters, especially with all that about belonging and growing up, but nothing we haven't seen before in a superhero movie.

And, worst of all, this is two and a half hours long! There was no justification for it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Boring and stupid, primarily because there are way too many characters. The first 20 minutes was OK, until the film randomly jumps backwards in time 5,000 years and focused on a bunch of other characters we hadn't seen yet. Like the main characters are Rob Stark and Asian lady who I can't remember the name of because she was so boring, but instead of focusing on them equal screen time is given to another 6 eternals (plus background characters) who don't add anything to the plot. On top of that, some of the plot decisions are mind-numbingly stupid. I won't give any spoilers, but what Rob Stark's character does at the end of the film is the single dumbest thing that has ever happened in a marvel film and it makes me angry just thinking about it. The result is a mixed big, one that has many strong points as well as a number of not-so-strong points. To its credit, the film's special effects are quite eye-popping, as is the cinematography featuring images shot (or simulated) from around the world. The picture also features a narrative that refreshingly attempts to break the mold typical of most Marvel Universe releases, incorporating greater degrees of relationship development and genuinely funny comic relief than is often found in these movies. However, the complicated story line is not always fleshed out as coherently as it could be, a problem compounded by uneven character development, assumptions about viewer foreknowledge of the material and a chronic need for editing many sequences that sag in between the good parts. In all, "Eternals" feels very much like a typical Chloe Zhao movie but with a bigger budget -- and one in which her weaknesses as a filmmaker come across more noticeably than in her typical fare. It's apparent from this picture that Ms. Zhao is still developing as a director -- and should be recognized as such instead of given the blank check of accolades often accorded her. Expand

Feels like no lessons were learned or character development was made. And for something as huge as the Celestials and Eternals are, the stakes just aren’t there and there’s no real weight to anything. The first act is a drag and gets repetitive when introducing the characters. Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo is the only one that stood out to me, not cause he’s the comic relief, but because he seemed to be the only one there with any life to their performance. Everyone else felt bland. I appreciate the Chloe Zhao for trying to take risks to make something different, but it was a huge miss. Something missing, I honestly don’t know what it is. Expand

The re-emergence of the creatures’ in current times brings them back together, but not before several flashbacks for backstory. This impressive cast manages to pull off the performances with conviction and director Chloé Zhao has allowed them plenty of room for interactions. There are also some beautiful visuals. However, all of this drama comes at a price: pace. Even though there are decent action scenes peppered thru the plot, these slow moments get a bit tiresome, esp. at a 2:37 run time. This iteration is notable for several hero firsts, including one who's openly-gay (with a kiss), a hearing-impaired woman and several who are not Caucasian.
NOTE: As usual with Marvel, stay thru the title credits for a surprise new character and thru the final credits for a mysterious teaser.
