And that turned out to be true. Eternals is a major tonal departure from other Marvel films and extremely unique in their oeuvre. It's got plenty of bum notes, but if you can set aside what's awkward about the movie and instead champion it for everything it does right, there's an interesting film here. There's a lot of lore to decompress into this story, and I think the writers did a great job of moving things along. I highly recommend seeing it in IMAX because it often fills the full screen with stunning images. I'm at a 7.5 on this but I could go higher if it stands up upon a re-watch. Expand

A bunch of well developed new characters and a story which is more elavorate for what we are used to from Marvel. The film tends to overexplain things in order to be clearer which means less rythm in this phases of the film, but it's worth since all of what they're trying to explain is interesting and important for the consistency of the MCU.
As I said before, the characters are well builded and all of them are different from each other. Each of them have their very own psychology giving them a deeply context. Overall, it's a great film which stands alone as a single product and also important for the future of Marvels Universe.

Thus, I define Eternals. The long one surprised me. Unlike the UCM formula, which in my view is already a little saturated. The film tackles new themes in a more serious film. No excess jokes. At the end we have a hook for a sequel. And I would very much like the director to return for a sequel. Eternals is the most different film from UCM, but also the one that has surprised me the most since Avengers: Infinite War and is already one of my favorite UCM movies. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Watched it yesterday (Friday November 5th) and really enjoyed it. It has the humour that other marvel movies have, I liked how it incorporated mythological aspects. Good story, good representation with the actors/characters. Would 100% watch it again! I never read the comics so I’m not sure if it’s all depicted the same way but I really liked the plot twist of characters Expand

If you look beyond the sheen of the usual Marvel CGI superhero battles and know up front that Jack Kirby's original comic vision could never truly be faithfully translated into a modern movie, you get to an interesting and beautifully rendered character study on what it means to be a human individual with free will. It also, in my opinion, grapples with questions on how the often complex dynamics of our given or chosen family define us (or not). Well worth a watch and a great addition to the Marvel cinematic universe. Expand

This is the type of movie I’ve been waiting for from the MCU. The movie had me glued. Even though there are 10 characters, I feel like Chloe Zhao was able to portray each character phenomenally without it feeling like it’s too much or too crammed. I know the MCU fans are used to the jokes and spoon fed material but watch this with an open mind. It’s not your typical and I think that’s a good thing. There’s nothing wrong with showing a more serious side to the MCU. If it’s in the comics, why not portray it on screen? We need more directors like Chloe who aren’t afraid to go deep within the comic movies. So far it’s worth it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

But I realized that this series will divide a lot of opinions, especially from the most demanding people as there are changes from the book to the series. And talking about these changes, I was a little bothered, but I thought it was necessary so that the series doesn't get too stuck or dragged. I believe that A Roda do Tempo is heading to the beginning of a great saga that is to come, I just wanted to ask Amazon to improve the CGI, in this I have to say a little more ''negative'' the fight scenes are a a little exaggerated and with some flaws that are immediately noticeable, I'm looking forward to the new episodes and I will highly recommend this series.

The reason being that the movie breaks off significantly from the successfully established formula ofEternals is indeed a very experimental film, easily the most unique movie in the MCU and consequently one of the most polarizing. The reason being that the movie breaks off significantly from the successfully established formula of practically every Marvel movie since Iron Man 1. Firstly, the movie looks beautiful (with the exception of a certain small CGI scene) all throughout and the action scenes are out of this place. The choreography is not as on-point as let's say Shang Chi but the abilities are used very creatively. The battles look great and felt very intense (something that came off as very refreshing) The best thing about the movie is that it feels very complete with the insane amount of content it brings. It has backstories, character development, plot twists, great action sequences (forest part, final battle) and the romances are very well done and NOT forced. Everything about the movie feels very natural and genuine, especially the music. Also the comedy is for once, actually good enough to keep it balanced since the nature of the film leans quite on the darker side. Also Gilgamesh and Ikaris completely stole the movie IMO. Finally, while the special effects didn't break any new ground, they still felt very brutal throughout the movie. All in all, the movie isn't a 10 but more like a 9.5. It's definitively in my top 5 of the MCU along with Infinity War, The Winter Soldier, Far From Home and Iron Man 1. Expand

This movie was just a big set piece, setting up bigger things that should get people interested moving forward. It wasn’t all about action, more about feeding us information and getting to know new characters that we’ll be seeing more of in the future. A major setback in so many ways. Eternal and immortal beings who have been around defending Earth from creatures known as deviants for over 7000 years find themselves in conflict with one another and contemplating their destiny/legacy and other such things when the deviants return to attack Earth again. Directed by Chloe Zhao (hot off her Academy Award-winning run with 'Nomadland'), this is a major misstep for the MCU in a surprising amount of ways. Incoherently jumping around time period after time period throughout, a confusing narrative, thinly-developed characters, surprisingly slow pacing and development throughout, etc. Really the only compliments I can pay this film is that it looks beautiful (the cinematography is gorgeous), and it's also one of the most emotional and thought-provoking MCU entries to date, which I did appreciate at times, but it wasn't near enough to save this mess of a film. Overall, it's an alarming decline in quality in what we've come to expect in the MCU. Oh and PS, the mid-credits scene cost this film a whole star for me, that's how big of a joke it was. Expand

I wanted to watch Eternals when it first came out, but the bad reviews kind of put me off, so I thought I would wait until it was released for home viewing, so that I could watch it in peace.

I wish I hadn't bothered.

The film is terrible, the worst Marvel film ever released. Seriously, it is just as bad as everyone told me it would be.

The main thrust of the film is that we have a new team of Super Heroes, but we have never heard of them before, because they are supposed to just let things happen on earth and not get involved, for example when Thanos wiped out half the population in The Blip / The Snap, they just stood by and watched. Already I hate them. The film goes back and forth in the history of the characters, and in doing so shows them directly interfering with humanity making the whole point of them not interfering, which we are told early in the film, completely pointless.

Anyway, after getting rid of "The Deviants", weird alien creatures, they decide to live as humans for a few thousand years, and when The Deviants re-emerge, then The Eternals meet back up to take care of them. You see the Eternals are old, very old, God like figures, but they are not really Gods, they were created by alien, God like creatures, so really, they are synthetic life forms. The Deviants were created first by the God like aliens, as a way to destroy life on the planet, so that more intelligent life could evolve in its place. The Deviants then evolve themselves, and start killing intelligent life, so The Eternals are created to take care of The Deviants. The story is so convoluted and ridiculous, and full of holes, and because anyone who is not a comic book nerd, will have no idea who any of the multitude of characters are, they have to tell these deep stories about each of them.

Unlike previous Marvel films that would take one character at a time, before throwing them all into a film together, this film does the opposite and it suffers for it.

And then there are the characters themselves. This is a 100% woke tick box effort. Think of a minority, and it will be represented badly here. Never has a film shoved down your throat so many woke cliches in one go.

With all that said, Richard Madden as Ikaris is a decent character, he should have been allowed his own film, instead of just being thrown into this. Salma Hayek as the wise and spiritual leader Ajak is likeable, and Angelina Jolie as the fierce warrior Thena is also interesting. But these three are interesting in part because they are recognisable actors, so carry that gravitas with them. The rest of the characters are instantly forgettable and rather unlikeable. And in many ways The Deviants were actually helping stop the destruction of the planet, by eating people and keeping the population down!

Ever notice how the bad guys in Marvel films are always the ones saving the planet through depopulation? They are the Bill Gates of the Marvel Universe!

The Good
This is a tough one. Angelina Jolie's suit is nice.

The Bad
EVERYTHING. The fact this film has made a profit is purely down to it being a Marvel film and that having some good will with fans, but a lot of that will be lost after this film. Poor direction, uninspiring dialog, shoehorned in woke scenes, nonsensical plot points.

Overall
2 and a half hours I will never get back. The worst Marvel film ever made. Simple as that.

I score Eternals 3/10. A point for Richard Madden, Salma Hayek and Angelina Jolie, of whom I am fans of all three. But to be honest I would rather see them in Bruce Willis' next B movie than this rubbish.

Total garbage. I'll admit it, I'm not a comic book person, but I have enjoyed some of the Marvel stuff. They're good, solid, blockbuster fun and there is some exceptional storytelling, so I'm not a lover or a hater. This is just pure dreck, though. You can tell it's a movie made by the diversity and inclusion team at Disney. I don't mind that **** if it's organic, but anymore I just see through to what it really is; unadulterated corporate pandering. I could even tolerate that if there was decent storytelling, but there isn't. In fact, some of it is just insulting. I only lasted 30 min. A deaf God? That's too far. Surely we can tell solid stories with deaf characters, but c'mon!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have no exposure to the Eternals in comics. However, I do occasionally read comics and have enjoyed most of the MCU. On that note, I had no past exposure to Shang-Chi and I enjoyed that film quite a bit. So, I went into this movie with an open mind. I was seriously disappointed. In short: The acting was subpar. The characters weren't likable. The pacing was off. They tried to do too much. It was probably 30-45 minutes too long.

It seemed like the director/creative team wanted to tell one story and Marvel/Feige wanted to tell another. One regarding the Celestial story and another regarding the Deviant story. They were somewhat intertwined (explaining the cycle of life and creation of the eternals), but could have easily been separated into two movies. Personally, I felt like the stakes were higher with the Deviant storyline. However, just as I thought the Deviants were being set up as the threat for the sequel, they were unceremoniously killed them off. It would have been a great cliff hanger to have Ikaris (and maybe even Sprite) in hiding (instead of suicide by sun), then they get simultaneously struck by the tentacles of the main Deviant, Ikaris starts to turn gray, the main Deviant starts to change, then cut to black. The Celestial story was a bit eye-rolling and boring for me. Mainly because we've already seen this story. In Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Ego (a presumed Celestial, but now the writers of the Eternals say he may have been "lying") is discovered to have planted seeds on other worlds to convert them into other Celestials - destroying the planets in the process. In Eternals, the Celestials have conspired to prepare Earth (and other planets in the past) as a womb to give birth to other Celestials - destroying the planet in the process. In Guardians 2, there was emotional investment in stopping Ego and minimizing destruction throughout the galaxy. In Eternals, we (the audience) already knew Earth wouldn't be destroyed. So, what were the stakes?

Additionally, the weird attempt at a love "square" between Sersi, Whitman, Ikaris, and Sprite was a huge fail. Whitman was barely in it. Sure, Sersi and Ikaris had some chemistry but not enough to be investing. I understand the attempt at empathy with Sprite, but it ended up just being creepy.

Ikaris' betrayal was flat out dumb. His motive of "I'm a Soldier and I will complete our mission" wasn't believable. The Eternals were his family. The Celestials were his boss. No one picks their boss over family. It would have made more sense for him to be doing it all for Sersi. Each time the Eternals are sent on a new mission, their memory is wiped. Him wanting to complete the mission, so Sersi (and his) memory is wiped and they can start over on a new planet (without Whitman) would have made way more sense.

I'm all onboard a toning down all the quips/jokes and being a bit more serious in the MCU. However, most of these characters were not likable. Sersi, Makkari, and Ajak were one dimensional. Ikaris ended up being a mindless tool. Thena was a liability. The entire character of Sprite was a bit creepy. Kingo seemed like one of the better characters until he suddenly said that he didn't care if they saved the world. Phastos was similar to Kingo where there were moments that he was likable but his character was too wishy washy - pretty sure he wouldn't have needed convincing to help save the world that his husband and child lived on. Druig was a whiny jerk with a god-complex (and super poorly acted, which is a bummer cause I loved Keoghan in Killing of a Sacred Deer). Gilgamesh was awesome and I understand why killing him off made sense for the story - to help "awaken" Thena - but I think flip-flopping this where Thena dies and Gilgamesh goes on to fight harder and eventually take out the main Deviant would have been more satisfying.

In my opinion, this was hands-down the worst MCU film. If they never made a sequel, I wouldn't lose any sleep.

Similar to Guardians of the Galaxy, this is one of those Marvel properties that I had no prior knowledge of and the movie was my first foray into their story. Unlike Guardians of the Galaxy, though, it was not good.

The movie has a lot of problems and it falls under the umbrella of those flicks where the more you think about it, the worse it gets, and if you don’t think about it, it’s middling at best, as elements and players introduced by the story and trying to squeeze them in an already expansive Universe lacks well thought out writing for proper cohesion and thus it comes off as lazy and stupid. Case in point: The Celestials, the true Godly Beings that have been shown a few times before in the MCU but this is the movie where you get a proper explanation about their existence and when the plot reveals details about the Prime Celestial Arishem’s design, it’s just dumb and saps whatever interest one might have had in that part of the story and worldbuilding.

Since I have grown a bit apathetic towards this cinematic universe due to worldbuilding shenanigans that Phase 4 has shown so far, poor writing in that area alone wouldn’t have been a big issue (would still be an issue) had the characters been interesting but that turned out to be the biggest problem of this movie which stems from its own nature of being i.e there are ten Eternals, ten main new characters that are introduced in a single movie, and none of them is properly developed. As I write this review, I don’t even remember the names of many of them. On top of that, director Chloe Zao decided to have the cast give uninterested/boring and bland performances for so much of the runtime instead of being energetic and charismatic utilizing every bit of screen time they have to imbue personality to their roles. There was also lost potential of a plot point regarding Deviants, the movie just ends it in an anti-climatic fashion and throws it away.

With all that being said, I did enjoy certain things. There were some beautiful visuals, particularly with the Celestials and their gargantuan scale, especially if you don’t think about the physics of it all. Some of the fights were entertaining even with the iffy CGI, the speedster Eternal especially was portrayed how I’d wish other movies to showcase their speed type characters and you get a fun meta pseudo Superman vs Flash throwdown. Despite having thin characterization, some Eternals I did end up liking such as Druig, Gilgamesh or even Icarus, and hell I even got interested in that one Deviant since that seemed important relative to most characters in the movie. I also do applaud the director for not filling the movie to the brim with the typical Marvel brand of humour which has been getting too annoying recently and I wish strong writing was present to complement the more serious tone. Plus, the movie had both Jon Snow and Robb Stark fall in love with Sersi which I found amusing.

Overall, this is in the bottom tier of MCU movies for me. I wouldn’t say it’s the worst one, that title belongs to Black Widow for now. I don’t know how the events in Eternals will play out going forward in the MCU or whether it’ll have any impact or would be forgotten. This probably would have fared far better if it was a Disney+ series instead as that would have given it time to develop its characters at the very least even if at the loss of spectacle. Wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re an MCU fan and completionist. Anyway, if I were to rate it, I’d give it a 5/10.

3) Stiff and slow action scenes with too much (bad) cgi and slowmotion
4) Invasive politically correct insertion that are poorly excecuted and became irritating instead of inclusive

6) Very different from the source material
7)Legions of un-intelligent enemy monster minions..with generic look

It has some quality though: It is a "serious" movie (it isn't a comedy like Thor Ragnarock 4 example) and to undersand it you you don't need to watch other 10 Marvel movies or TV show.

To sum up a super heroes movie that looks like it was filmed and scripped for television in the nineties (when they treated comic book and superheroes movie like a low budget, childish product).

This was one of the most predictable films I have ever seen with the most knock-off characters ever. Felt like I was watching a knock-off Dune or something (sure didn't feel like a Marvel movie). Everything about this film felt like it was ripped from different movies; nothing felt authentic, like a JJ Abrahams film. I do think this is Marvel's worst movie; as it was boring, predictable, illogical, and very forgettable. At least the other bad ones tried to be somewhat original. Expand

The whole movie doesn't make any sense. So many issues there. The deviants are pointless to even have them in the movie. You could just delete all the moments they were on screen and the movie would be still the same.

The Eternals are basically useless bunch of incompetents who's only superpower is that they don't age. And even Hawkeyes daughter could easily kill them with a single arrow.
And yeah sure it is totally believable that a cosmic "super eternal super being" who can't die.....ehmm...age, and has some super powers is suffering from physical flaws like......can't speak, and has hearing aid? WTF man? Who wrote this movie? But hey at least they could mark 2 checklist items for the requirements of the oscar nominations: "At least 30% of all actors in secondary and more minor roles are from at least two of the following underrepresented groups: - LGBTQ+
- People with cognitive or physical disabilities, or who are deaf or hard of hearing"
I think we can all agree that with the death of Tony Stark, the MCU died too. All they released since that, is garbage.

Eternals was an ok movie. The story is actually pretty good. There are some holes that they try to explain. It's a bit hard to swallow in terms of logic. It's a bit hard to swallow in terms of logic. Also, I don't think that the flashback works well in this movie. Maybe that's because they are often longer then the present sequences between them. Putting them all in sequence could have been interesting and solidified the story. The acting was very uneven. The main actress lack experience and emotional range for that movie. It was vividly apparent in contrast to some better actors. She was miscast or badly directed. It did get better at the end of the movie. Hard to understand when the secondary actors were decent enough. The FX were really good in my book and especially amazing actions scenes. I like the humour. The music was fair. I give it 65%. It was a good movie but with a wrong structure, and average actor direction. Expand

I usually do but the trailers just didn't sell me and the characters themselves I have no knowledge about it to care. Then the reviews came out and it was very negative. This was the final nail in the coffin for me. The premise is "The Eternals, a race of immortal beings with superhuman powers who have secretly lived on Earth for thousands of years, reunite to battle the evil Deviants". So are the reviews correct or is this movie actually better than the reception it was given?

The most obvious praise is the visuals. MCU movies tend to be pretty dull looking for the most part. There are a few such as the Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor Ragnarok where the visuals do have more impact. In Eternals, the visuals are gorgeous! A lot of the shots are incredibly vibrant and stunning. Even when it is just a shot of them standing around, it looks more picturesque than anything Marvel has done before. The CGI was also astonishingly good. The CGI of the Eternals power was great, the enemy Deviant design and CGI was great, plus the Celestials were amazing in scale and scope. Eternals also explores some interesting themes about humanity that I do like. There are also some really great action sequences in the film. The forest action sequence is memorable as it has a cool Superman-like fight scene. The final fight is also quite great too with how the abilities of the Eternals are utilised. Special praise to how they handle the Eternals, Markari, super speed power as they for once don't use slow-mo which makes it look more unique. I also think the actors do a great job. Kumail Nanjiani and Brian Tyree Henry are both a joy to watch when on-screen while getting some genuine laughs from me. Richard Madden is cool yet menacing. Lauren Ridloff despite being deaf, easily convey the right emotion for the scene. Barry Keoghan is creepy yet charming and Don Lee gives a real lovable performance.

However, there was just something off about the main lead Gemma Chan who has the most screen time. Her performance was just very wooden and dull most of the time. She has been in the MCU before in Captain Marvel (2019) and I remember her standing out a lot. So it was just kind of odd how boring her performance was in here. Although, the major reason for this could be how her character, Sersi, is written. Every other Eternal has a clear personality, views, motives and problems. Sersi just seems to love humans and has some love problems that feel very inconsequential for the most part. She is a very boring main character with the other Eternals being way more interesting than her.

On that note, this movie has too much going on. Each of the Eternals has its own problems that get brought up but immediately brushed over in a matter of seconds. For example, Phastos abandons humanity after seeing what they did with the nuclear bombs on Hiroshima, but the scene after he is completely over that! Every Eternal has an issue that could have been a whole plotline in itself that would've been more interesting than the actual plot. There is also a main deviant that starts to grow stronger, knowledgeable and more intelligent, which was a very intriguing idea. Unfortunately, the deviant is completely wasted and ends up having little to no impact on the main story whatsoever. Just there so the Eternals could have someone to punch. They could've removed this intelligent deviant and the story would still be the exact same. What a waste...

Additionally, the pacing is quite bad. There is a lot of moments throughout where the movie just slows down considerably to the point that it can feel dull. This isn't helped by the fact that this movie feels like an eternity. It is 2 hours 30 minutes but it could be cut down by 15-20 minutes and still convey the same plot. There is also an incredible amount of exposition and it can almost feel like you are getting bombarded with way too much information. Character development is also rushed. Characters will go from feeling one way about something and completely do a 180 on it in a couple of minutes. It doesn't feel natural or believable. Furthermore, there are too many characters introduced and they don't get explored or enough screen time to really resonate with any of them.

Overall, the reviews make Eternals out to be the worst MCU movie. I disagree with that as there are definitely way worst MCU movies than this. Nevertheless, it does feel like the movie crammed way too many ideas into it and did not utilize the ideas properly. Eternals (2021) could have been something amazing and unique in the MCU. Sadly the final product just ends up feeling like a complete waste of its potential. There is some genuinely great stuff in it but I do feel like the Eternals might be better suited to a Disney+ series than a movie.
