This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is a perfect parallel to Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. I had a conversation with someone months ago when talking about how Denis Villeneuve was making this adaptation. My cousin, a film buff, was interested in the film and asked me my opinion. I told her that it would be interesting to see how it comes out because the book is famous for being dense and notoriously difficult to adapt. Every attempt at turning this book I to a film or series has been an objective failure. But this is a director that made a non linear short story into a masterpiece film in Arrival. (I consider it one of the best made films of all time.) I said that LOTR was exactly the same and it took a genius to make this a good film. Just as predicted, Dune was a lot like Fellowship of the Ring. Well done, very labored by necessity for world building, somewhat hard to get into, but a foundation for a very good story to be told. I don't think everyone will like it but it's just like LOTR in that it's a very serious attempt at an overly serious story.

It takes about 50 minutes to get good and the visuals are required to carry the film too much, but even still the major pieces are all solid. The acting is good. Direction, music. All good. It just is not the best writing for a screenplay, where it is for a book much like LOTR. But like Fellowship it was better than expected while still being something you may not want to ever watch again. It likewise is a setup for another film (or more( that will likely be even better.

Spoilers:

The major issue with the film is that we have another muffled story of a space Jesus type with 'magic' powers being forced to stop an evil empire with violence and prophecy. All the time themes of anti-capitalism and anti-colonialism coming in heavy handed and slightly muddled with the good guys thinly suggesting that the real prize is the strength of the natives, called desert power in this film. It makes your eyes roll a little every time they say this. It does, however, feel like when W. Claimed that freedom for Iraqis was the reason America invaded Iraq, though the movie did suggest that they were trying to gain power for political reasons. The movie might have felt more relevant 15 years ago.

The movie is beautiful and if you don't use your brain too much while watching the film you should get drawn in eventually. But the film uses about 50 minutes on world building and exposition before anything truly interesting happens.

It feels like extra melodramatic Star Wars with an Arrival esthetic which is okay by me. But it lacks humor and that may be enough to turn people off. I would recommend the film but suggest that you come in with light expectations. Who knows if this is a good first chapter in a great series or if it's just a good adaptation for an incredibly difficult book to translate.

From the most joyful or deeply human moments, to the most horrible or deeply inhuman moments. Sometimes raw and dark as life can be, sometimes wonderful and magical as life can be...

A universal saga in infinitely more ways than one... A mythology filled with values and philosophies colliding with one another... A multiplicity of beliefs, where certainties and uncertainties are entwined with one another, like two inseparable snakes seeking each other without ever finding each other...

Mystical and evanescent, as well as concrete and visceral... Dreams and premonitions, choices and actions, space and time... Or where the role that you play is written but is not, has already taken place but never will...

A cinematographic fresco that is immensely majestic and glorious like the greatest of paintings or the greatest of concertos...

... It answers everything while questioning you about everything, because it is simply giving you the pure truth.

PS : From the entire casting and their performances, to the cinematography+photography+design & visual language as a whole, to the action+choregraphy+music+costumes, the staging and overall atmosphere, the lore/world building, its entire mythology (and its codes), with countless messages and layers... Everything in this movie is pure mastery, pure genius.

An absolute masterpiece.

When it was announced that Denis Villeneuve would direct the sequel to Blade Runner, there was a lot of noise. Noise that I ignored.
Even at the time I said he was too good to let Blade Runner 2049 fail, and regardless of its box office numbers, the truth is that he delivered a great film.

Therefore, when it was also announced that he would direct a new adaptation of Dune, I didn't doubt him at all. In his entire career he has never made me doubt of his work.
And when the images and trailer of what he had done began to circulate, needless to say, I was impressed and my trust was reinforced. But visuals aren't everything, I know that, but I was hoping the book would give him enough guidelines to accomplish something magnificent. It pains me to say it a bit, and it might sound contradictory considering my rating, but I have to be frank, and unfortunately for Villeneuve, the source material worked against him.

Perhaps in his vision and in his initial plans, Villeneuve had more films in mind, especially the second part, and of course also the series planned for HBO Max. But the simple fact of calling it Dune Part One and ending it as it ends, goes without saying that it does affect the film, even if you don't want to believe it. And the reason is basic but too strong. Dune feels like the start of something even vaster, but it also feels like an incomplete journey.
We are barely scratching the surface when we're told that that journey is over.
And I can't deny that Dune is a tremendous epic. A sci-fi epic in every sense of the word.
The scale of this film is just impressive. And I'm talking about all its elements. All of them.
But when you get to the end of this specific story, it undoubtedly feels incomplete.

"The first rule of show business is to always leave them wanting more" And Dune leaves you like that. I was eager for more right there, because the film's never boring.
But ending with a feeling of emptiness, that something was missing, that will never be pleasant.
Especially if the whole thing is hanging by the need of financial success to get the rest of the story. I was going to give it a 7. I gave it the 8 because of the vastness, scope and ambition of its production.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its a good introduction but hardly a full movie. Maybe the first 100 pages of the book are covered. They take control of Dune, the duke is killed, and Paul and his mother flee into the desert and meet the freman. That's it. The movie needed to be longer and include more plot. Great visuals, but overall its disappointing. Expand

This is a tricky one to review. On one hand it is visualy impresive with great acters and staying true to what Dune is, on the other hand this movie only works if there comes at least one more movie and that starts where this end.

To explain why.
This movie explains the universe and sets the stage, it explains what is going on and hints at what is to come. These things it does well, and if we get at least one more movie this is a 10/10. As a movie that builds into another it is a strong and great movie.
On the other hand that is all it does, it builds up to what is to come, and so if the next movie does not start where this ends, then I am done with this movie version of Dune, because as a stand alone movie it fails.

So short about the rest.
The acting is great, the right persons in the right roles. They all fit and do their jobs really well.
The visuals are amazing, to the point that it often felt like I was watching a work of art rather then a movie.
Dune is not your standard Sci-fi and the movie dares to show that.

Again I must say that the movie is a strange one to review, it in many ways deserve a 10 yet I have to tell others that there is a chance you will hate the movie, it is simply not for everyone. There is also the fact that this does not work as a stand alone movie without another to pick up where this leave things.

Before watching this movie i expected it to be slow paced, patient and visually stunning movie coming from Denis Villeneuve and mostly i was right and it it a good movie but did it live up to the hype for me...no

The first half of this movie was a slow burn, took its time with the story-telling, character introductions and mainly focused on world building complimented with amazing visual shots from Denis Villeneuve and although i enjoyed some aspects of the world building, great visual effects and scenery and the mystery of the story and Paul Atreides' involvement in it, the first half of Dune was mostly uninteresting to me especially with mostly average characters(more on that later).

The second half however picks up with the pace and delivers the sci-fi epic that i wanted with good action, amazing set pieces and i know i've said it before and i'm gonna say it again THIS MOVIE WAS VISUALLY AMAZING and directed well but most importantly the story and pacing started to gel together well too along with the mystery aspect of the movie kept me kinda hooked but still had problems with paper thin character arcs and the when the movie is getting really interesting it ends abruptly.

Now on the characters, besides Timothée Chalamet's character Paul Atreides who is the protagonist of the movie, i didn't feel an emotional connection with most of the characters most of them didn't have interesting arcs if any at all and it's not because of the acting, i mean look at the cast of this movie it's impressive and there wasn't any poor acting performance in sight all the actors gave their all in their roles but that can only carry you so far if i didn't care for the characters.

The most interesting characters were Duke Leto Atreides, Lady Jessica Atreides and Duncan Idaho(Jason Mamoa was the only one who looked like he was having fun in the movie and was badass too) and was the second best character of the movie.Zendaya wasn't really in this movie as i thought she would be even though it's implied heavily she is integral to the story but that payoff doesn't really happen. The villains were your typical bad guy villain with average motivations although Stellan Skarsgård as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen was creepy.

For the protagonist Timothée Chalamet gives a good performance as usual. Paul Atreides' story and journey was your typical hero journey although it's uniquely told as his arc is full of mystery as doesn't really get resolved by the end of the movie but i liked the dynamic between him and his parents especially the beginning with his father which was a cool moment. So with Dune being a slow burn, patient movie and average characters it relies heavy on the plot and story-telling for it to be a success and for me personally i feel it wasn't enough to make up for the flaws i had with Dune like the heavy slow paced and kinda boring first half, not feeling invested with most of the characters and some of the world around Dune feeling mostly empty for a sci-fi but i did enjoy the second half more, the action was well directed, the acting performances were really good and the movie is a visual joy to experience thanks to Denis Villeneuve's directing complimented with good cinematography and some aspects of the score(kinda annoyed me at times but it was mostly good).

I think it's a good movie but it's just not for me at the end of the day. I respect the unique take it has especially with the movie being released in Hollywood nowadays so i think this movie is necessary but personally might not watch it again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. By in large, amazing. Fantastic visuals and audio. Characters were likeable, just wish we had more time with some of them. Didn't find it slow at all. Wish part 2 were ready to go. I'm pleased they took time to clearly telegraph dark things to come in terms of Paul's role as a "savior" -- they go out of their way to emphasize the Missionaria Protectiva installing and exploiting myths.
Nits to pick: the relationship between spice and space travel could have been clearer. Yueh and Hawatt could have benefitted from more characterization.

Perhaps because I didn't expect much from Villeneuve's film. The fact is that, firstly, Herbert's book is fundamentally impossible to film, since its "highlight" is focused on the thoughts and inner experiences of the characters, which often do not coincide at all with their behavior. Secondly, the political climate in Hollywood and the United States in general is now not free from the influence of one of the ideologies, which openly imposes certain taboos and prescribes certain conventions for filmmaking. The first could not but lead to a simplification of the plot by the director, inclined to visual narration. And the second factor inevitably destroys the balance built by the author between factions and sexes in the book, as well as the atmosphere in general and Herbert's religious and political hints. Both of these factors are present in Villeneuve's film, but, surprisingly, Denis still managed to "loop between the drops", creating not quite an adaptation of Herbert's Dune, but quite a fascinating version of his own "Dune". The audiovisual component, as always with Villeneuve, is luxurious, and even to some extent compensates for the simplification of the plot and the unrevealed thoughts and experiences of the characters. Modern political taboos and conventions are also present, manifesting themselves in cut out "politically incorrect" dialogues, shifted accents, altered scenes, races and even the sexes of the characters, but they are skillfully smoothed out without disturbing the atmosphere or mocking the common sense of the viewer, thus not destroying the wall between viewer and narration. Villeneuve has managed to make the viewer, at least me, to wait for the continuation of the narration, interrupted in mid-sentence. By the standards of modern Hollywood, Dune is a great movie. Expand

At the end of the day, this movie shows me that Dennis Villeneuve’s style of directing is really a thing to get used to for many people. Sadly, I'm not one of them. In order for a movie, that’s supposed to be part of a trilogy of movies, to get me hooked in for its sequels, it has to convince me with its drama, action, characters & plot. Instead, Dune decides to sequelbait and to bore its audience with nothing but political talk, that is not even explained properly for newbies, who don’t know anything about Dune. It’s been overhyped for nothing and it does not even come close to what the first Lord of the Rings movie did for its sequels, not even by a long shot. Really disappointing!

Pacing is flawed, acting feels mostly by the numbers, the truly emotionally evoking moments are few and far between because you often feel almost too distanced from the character(s) in question to empathize with them or you haven't been given the time to soak in what they feel before the movie is forced to move to the next step in the plot. The pacing somehow feels both rushed when it comes to getting from one plot point to the next and yet feels too slow when it comes to the establishment of characters' relationships with each other or giving them the time to express important inner monologues. However even in condensing Dune into a two part film, Denis Villeneuve has packed in an immense amount of detail that will finally satisfy longtime fans of the series. Pretty much casting was near perfect. The weapons, costumes, vehicles, and architecture are in a class of their own, truly presenting a partially familiar, partially alien, and wholly immersive vision of the 102nd Century AG. The sound design and cinematography are also top notch, to the point where I really do recommend you see it for the first time in a theatre. Dune 2021 absolutely deserves the comparisons to the Lord of the Rings films in that it brings an exalted work of fiction to life in a way that will amaze newcomers to the series as much as longtime fans. Truly Denis has done something amazing here, and I hope immensely that he gets to realize his vision in adapting Frank Herbert’s work at least through Dune Messiah. This really is about as good as science fiction can get. Expand

Both Caladan and Arakis look uninhabited. I am not talking about the desert, that's fine, it should look uninhabited, but the city of Arrakeen looks like a model sitting on a desk, and then you become painfully aware of the fact that that's exactly what it is. It is difficult to cram all the important book information into a movie like this, so they took too much luxury in taking it slow and showing so many visions of Chani. The dialogue/voiceover should have been much richer and packed with information. As it is, if you haven't read the book, you'll have a difficult time figuring out what's going on. I enjoyed the movie to some degree, but I still feel that this could have been done much better. Worm scenes are great. Expand

For those not familiar with the story, the family known as House Atreides embarks to the planet Arrakis (aka Dune) in an effort to obtain valuable spice that gives them power. They are soon thrust into a war against the rival House Harkonnen family for control of the planet and the spice. Meanwhile, the Atreides son, Paul (Timothee Chalamet) is called upon to fulfill an unexpected destiny and lead his family and the native Fremen people to victory. Having never read the novel, but having seen the 1984 version made by David Lynch that was a critical and commercial failure, but which I still enjoyed and appreciated for its campiness and fun nonetheles, I had high hopes for an even more faithful and solid take on 'Dune', and while this film certainly delivered, I must admit there were a couple of aspects that left me wanting more, and that couldn't quite exceed my expectations. Going in, I knew the pace would be a little slow, and it most definitely was, as the film takes its time with the exposition and setting things up throughout. However, it left me feeling slightly underwhelmed in spite of the grand scale and scope of the film, which is made up for rather well through the gorgeous cinematography, production design, and always brilliant score by the legendary Hans Zimmer. As for the performances, what an incredible all-star cast we're graced with here! For starters, Chalamet is perfectly cast as Paul Atreides, and while I normally enjoy his performances quite a bit, I never really felt the full potential of his talents here, as he was simply reduced to lots of soft-speaking and whispering, as well as lots of flashback voiceovers. His parents however (played by Rebecca Ferguson and Oscar Isaac) are both highly impressive and brilliant here! We get some reliably great tough guy performances from actors such as Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, and Jason Momoa, and Stellan Skarsgard is rather chilling in his villainous Baron Harkonnen role. Zendaya also shows up sporadically throughout the film (albeit mostly in flashbacks.) Like I said, I really felt myself somewhat underwhelmed, unsatisfied, and wanting more by the time the film ended, but this could also do with the fact that this film is only the first half of the story, so hopefully that second part will get greenlit. Overall, it's a beautiful spectacle of a film to behold that does take its time with pacing and story moreso than your average big-budget sci-fi film, but the visuals, themes, and performances are all impressive enough to make this a world worth diving into. I'm under 35, Black, and Female), I will admit that I was hoping to see certain scenes that ended up not making the cut. Although, it's a bit of a bummer not to see certain stand out scenes, I had to remind myself that this is an interpretation for the silver screen. Villeneuve has done a beautiful job re-creating this world for the OG fans and for the Dune neophytes. The world of Dune is already complex, and to really give it the value it needs may take a TV show (...I know). The silver screen must take the audience into account. Again, a lot of people are unfamiliar with Dune, and Villeneuve did a great job with introducing this world to them. The sets and views were breathtaking. I'm just looking forward to part 2, and possibly part 3. I'm looking forward to a more in-depth dive into the characters. This film was a love letter to both the OGs and the neophytes. Welcome to Arrakis! It's only the beginning. Expand

A fantastic experience with stunning visuals, magnificent set pieces, and production designs, and a powerful Hans Zimmer score that transforms throughout the film and serves as an important character in its own right. With a run time of 2 hours 35 minutes, Villeneuve's film is highly entertaining and rarely time-consuming. With stunning visuals that aid in explaining the complex world and diplomacy of "Dune" and the planet Arrakis, which isn't a problem because "Dune" is so distinct and contains so many dynamic scenes that newcomers like myself will be returning for more viewings.
This is one of the year's best book adaptations because everything is presented in a coherent and beautiful manner, and everything is neatly recapped, which will please fans of the book series. Additionally, there is no question that, without a doubt, the entire ensemble cast does as well by the script by selling the audience on the “feudal interstellar society in which various noble dynasties control planetary fiefs,”
Is "Dune" a film that reminds us of what a Hollywood blockbuster can be? A gripping tale that is both action-packed and thought-provoking. Villeneuve's "Dune" is another masterpiece, and as science fiction enthusiasts, we should all be overjoyed that he will continue with Part 2. As good as "Arrival" and "Blade Runner 2049" are, this film has a true sense of profundity that distinguishes it as a genuine sci-fi magnum opus

If there is a criticism that many share, it is the pacing of the first part of the film. It needed something to set the scene for us, to show us who the strong and the weak were. I'm not much for narration (show me, don't tell me), but it may not have been a bad idea. The scenes are magnificent with special effects off the chart. Many desert travel scenes are quite endless. How do you spruce up a desert. I thought the sand worms were a little one dimensional. I know there is another film down the road. Expand

Villeneuve manages to immerse the viewer in a deep, colossal universe, while avoiding feeling overwhelmed by it.The whole cast is at his best, but Zimmer and Villeneuve are the ones that take the cake. The only reason I don't rate it higher is the lack of bitterness and moral dilemma in the script that characterizes Villeneuve's filmography.

'Dune' is a clear example of how a blockbuster can have an auteur's vision. Although I don't like James Cameron films —except for the Terminator ones and 'Aliens'—, he's also on that small list. And, of course, George Miller, who redefined'Dune' is a clear example of how a blockbuster can have an auteur's vision. Although I don't like James Cameron films —except for the Terminator ones and 'Aliens'—, he's also on that small list. And, of course, George Miller, who redefined the action genre with the thunderous 'Fury Road.' Denis Villeneuve did it with 'Blade Runner 2049,' and he's done it again with his version of Frank Herbert's classic.

In a time where blockbusters have to follow a strict formula to be "successful" in the box office, 'Dune' defies all expectations by going slowly, showing instead of telling almost all the time, and employing an uncommon visual style for this type of films. I mean, which action movie will dare to darken the image to the point of almost fading to black? Villeneuve took a high risk, but it was rewarding.

This feels like a good adaptation of the novel, developing the narrative in a very straightforward way, with little focus on the subplots. Almost all the characters deliver, despite some appearing as little as five minutes. But most importantly, Villeneuve and the writers keep the ecological and anti-capitalist themes of the novel, emphasizing water as the most valuable thing we have. Come on, even a character says that there is no more valuable wealth someone can offer than the water in their body.

Some could say that the film invests too much time foreshadowing the events of the hypothetical second part, but Villeneuve and his team are very clever by incorporating this into the narrative itself; the prophecy of what will become of Paul and everyone else around him. Of course, 'Dune' feels like a half, a very good one, but still incomplete. But there's no denying that Villeneuve was the right man to finally make justice to this saga.

While I understand the Director is trying to initiate world building and plan for a multiple-film franchise, the golden rule is that each film has to stand on it's own. The pace of the film could have been a bit faster in some parts and a bit slower in others. For instance, we get a lot of time with Paul in that tent but the entire setup of the Atreides and the Spice Production was over in about 15 minutes. A few scenes cut to show the passage of some time and Leto getting reports of sabotage, broken equipment, and so forth could have been done in a way that covered that time more appropriately so it didn't feel rushed. A few cuts of Paul interacting with locals a bit more to establish this believe in Mahdi. Otherwise the first and second act feel a bit laborious and honestly leave the finale in the third act feeling rushed and instead leaving me with a fizzle. The fight at the end with the Fremen warrior was slow, and without tension whatsoever. In today's film landscape with high impact action films, if you're going to have a knife fight, it needs to be at or better than the best fight sequence out there, particularly for a budget of 165 million. Buatista and Zendaya's talents were wasted only serving as minor build-up to the next film. There were ways to include them to show the importance of both characters. So while I love the visuals and the modern digital impact on the cinematography, the story telling and character development (the best part of the Dune books) is still lacking somewhat. I mean Paul and his mother got quality time, but Leto felt empty and with a talent like Oscar Isaacs, that has to be a Direction issue. Overall I say a bit above mediocre. I'm hoping the next film is better, if it gets greenlit. This series will likely be evaluated as a whole rather than individual parts because thus far, the start is not what I'd hoped as an avid Dune fan. Expand

It improved pacing by juxtaposing action with intense emotion and suspense. It will likely be remembered as the best sci-fi epic of the decade, perhaps the best epic of the decade. I know Metacritic is ongoing proof that reviewers think their job is something other than judging the quality of movies, but this looks like it will go down as one of their more memorable misses. This version of Dune should be recommended to any human being with even a drop of curiosity about anything in them. Dune delivers. I grew up in the 80s reading the classics, Heinlein, Asimov, etc. Dune was one of my favorites, but at the time I was too young to process the politics and the humming back story that is hinted at by the characters. The other movies didn't do the book justice, this one did. Unlike a lot of modern movies the characters are likeable. Their situation difficult and their loyalty to each other admirable. This all comes through in this movie in a way that it didn't in the other movies. I'm re-reading the book now since I saw the movie.

The bottom line is, this is a really good sci-fi movie of a really good sci-fi book. I, like others, am glad I knew going in that is is part 1 of 2. Really though, some scenes are drawn out that didn't need to be and I would have preferred a 3 1/2 hour epic movie that didn't need a sequel and frankly I think it would have been better that way.

My complaint that knocks off a star or so: the ship designs and sets. The colors are OK and good to look at but the camera angles don't feel like you're moving. And the ships are just a big block that "hangs in the air much in the way that a brick doesn't". The book doesn't bother describing these things, but the movie should have. Seriously just jump on pinterest and type "starships" and you could find 100 talented artists who make their starships look cool and functional at the same time. The book can be forgiven for not taking this seriously since our imagination can fill these things in, but after Star Wars in 1977 showed that starships can be functional AND look cool, there is no excuse for just making giant blocky starships.

The book isn't very faithfully followed; if you read it you'll see why (some plot points haven't aged well), and its worth a read. A couple of characters are oversimplified and a couple of plot lines abandoned, but hey, when is the last time you read a book? Well now you have a reason since the movie ends half way through.

Anyway, this is a great film. A great sci-fi film. The acting is good to great and the action scenes are great. See it in the theater, it is worth it.

Not for everyone though as it has Denis Villeneuve's signature slow burn and subdued acting. If you are into more than just action packed films with one liners you will enjoy this though.

Only point of criticism I can find is that it ends too fast and needs a part 2 ASAP.

It was like watching the first two and a half steps of an epic: Exposition. Inciting Incident. Rising Action. Then having to stand up and stretch my legs for an intermission. It's going to be a long and painful intermission because I was ALREADY PREPARED to sit through another two to three hours of this film, and now I will have to bide my time. It will be worth it. If this movie was good (and it was GOOD), then the next is going to blow our minds. Judging as a film fan rather than one determining accuracies or lack thereof from Herbert's universe. ----

2.5 feels long with a slow burn like this, but justified considering the massive undertaking that Dune is. Rushing through the material any faster would undoubtably push this film into sci-fi action camp.
Villeneuve captures both intimate moments and armada-scale scenes while showing immense care / craft for both, while holding our interest as we ping pong between the two. Paul's character starts in a juvenile depiction, and we are brought up to speed alongside him throughout the film. We experience his world and it's sudden shifts in parallel which helps a viewer stomach the leaps we must take. This style also helps us justify where his character and the film ends.

The movie is well acted, but the sparse dialogue, furrowed brows and 1000 yard stares as the main dish is a tight box to play in. Yet everyone seems to deliver quite well. Chalamet is great and certainly delivers on carrying the film.

The sound design is incredible, see it in a theater or invest in sound (you won't regret it.) The cinematography and CG are beautiful. Blade Runner serves as a fairly stellar depiction of a some-what distant future, where Dune mixes in more mysticism and fantasy and takes us far off-world without being hokey (which is a difficult thing to do). It's difficult not to see a lot of semblance to Star Wars baked in between the literal war in the stars we're watching, Oscar Isaac, sand monsters, and the Annakin ora floating over Paul. If Star Wars was made strictly for adults, this would be an acceptable form (although a bit more graphic violence could help this movie deepen the seriousness of what we're seeing, but doesn't feel mandatory or missed here.)

The only disappointment of the film is realizing you've spent so much time simply to google "Dune 2 release date" considering the film feels half-way through (or less) of whatever it's trying to deliver. Looking forward to seeing where this goes.

Dune is spectacular at the visual and auditory level, but highly unpleasant to watch due to rapid scene switching and highly forgettable due to lack of depth.

The entire movie seems to be repeating a cycle of introducing a big new locale with bombastic music followed by a shallow exchange of a few oneliners or a brief action scene that has no flow or cohesion with the rest of the scenes, making the movie feel more like one long spectacular trailer than anything that tries to convey an actual story. Overall, it felt pretty similar to Jupiter Ascending, Valerian or any recent superhero movie: Spectacular visuals, but devoid of cohesion. Dune however lacks the cringy dialogue that the aforementioned movies had, cutting the dialogue to a bare minimum instead, which makes it even more difficult to understand the setting and maintain cohesion. Unfortunately, Duncan and Stilgar try their best to up the cringe factor here and there with their silly, out of place oneliners.

The moments where the movie does take a bit more time to resolve an important scene, the scenes are not done well, which prevents the viewer from feeling any emotional attachment: This is most clearly seen in the poorly executed scenes of Paul's test, the long but shallow dialogue between Paul and the Duke Leto, the scene between the Duke Leto and the Baron Harkonnen, and the flashy but highly disorientating combat scenes that just feel like an anticlimax more than anything the movie had spent considerable time building up towards. In general, the movie lingers long on scenes that lack any meaning but look pretty, and skips over the key scenes and interactions that are supposed to carry the story. I do not mind the fact that the movie does not always closely follows the book, as that is understandable for an adaptation, but I do mind that the movie does not utilize the opportunities of the movie medium for any kind of story telling or exposition besides the epic visuals/audio - this does not necessarily have to be through spoken dialogue, but narrative exposition can also be done in a visual way, which the movie does not do either.

The characters feel paper-thin and barely display any personal characteristics, making them flat, unlikable and unrelatable. There is nothing explaining the motivations or backgrounds of Piter, Yueh, Rabban or the Baron Harkonnen. The Harkonnen are evil because they have ghoulish faces and speak the few lines they are graced with a voice that does befit a Marvel villain, and that's pretty much all there is to it.

It is odd to see movie based on DUNE, arguably one of the more complex and intellectual science fiction IPs reduced to a movie that does not have a single memorable line of dialogue, compelling scene, or meaningful interaction between its characters.

The movie trickled along and fizzled out, and at the end I was left wondering what I had actually seen, as I remembered nothing of the story or felt anything for any of the characters. It was just a long sequence of brief impressive visuals that bear little to no relation to each other. The movie left me feeling empty, like I had watched a generic Marvel movie with no plotline, no background, no character development, hyperactive pacing, shallow/silly interactions, all covered up by epic bombastic visuals.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It’s not bad. It’s just not great. It’s half a movie. The pacing is so slow and while it has some truly magnificent moments, it can’t make up for some poor casting decisions, some extremely slow, yet not very deep moments, and many other issues. I found myself having to pause it every 20 minutes to go do something or check my phone. I’m a scifi/Dune junkie. I’ve read them all and watched both versions of the 1984 film. I would still say I enjoy this as a generic scifi movie, but since they want this to be the definitive Dune, I have to say this is a MISS. Also, it’s half a movie. Again wanted to point out it drags along so slowly that Paul is still Paul at the end. 2 hours and 35 minutes for that. Probably 5+ hours for both movies at this rate to get the plot in. The slow, grinding plot that doesn’t even deeply go into the plots within plots. It almost assumes the viewer has seen then scifi shows, the movie, & read all of the books. Otherwise someone new would be liken”what the heck is going on?!” Can’t rate it higher. There are some great things about this movie, but it does not live up to the hype just like Blade Runner 2049. Oh and it’s extremely pretentious. Extremely. Expand

I enjoyed watching this for the most part. Most of that enjoyment comes from the actors carying the movie as every single one embodies their respective roles. There are artistic liberties taken of course, but most feel like they enhance the movie similar to the way that the books are by integrating real wold religious practices and deep ideology. One thing I would warn people about going into viewing it is that it should have been called “Dune: Where Everyone Is Almost Whispering And It’s Hard to Hear A Lot Of What Is Said, But It Doesn’t Matter Because You’ll Get The Gist Of It.” All the a-holes telling me that I needed to go see this in the theater can eat an elephant scrotum because it would have driven me crazy to not have subtitles for a lot of this film without the whispering issue. Another issue I have is that in all of the years of promotional material for this movie not once have I seen reference to the subtitle that comes up at the brief title screen as - “DUNE: PART ONE.” Without that information I would have been very upset with how the movie ends. I like the design of the film, but the pacing and the overall flow is just too slow for my taste. As tense as this movie can get the music is a bit much at times. While the overall score is not bad, it stands out in a big way. A few cues made me laugh out loud as they “mickey mouse” hit and were way too much for even the people watching with me. I don’t think that the work was taken too seriously or that it’s one of those films that “insists on its self,” but for now it just has too much to live up to from previous entries. Even some of the visual effects of the ships looked a little weak here and there. It’s unfortunate, but I found myself checking off the things that had and were to happen instead of enjoying what was being presented as I enjoy the above mentioned previous entries. I’ll definitely give this another viewing, technically a third as I watched it twice already, and I’ll look forward to the next installment. I know the books are HEAVY with detail, I just hope that they chose to do more within the scope of the story instead of drawing out the films runtime with a narrative film style relying on slow motion bravado and too much flash forward inane imagery. Fans of the book should give it a watch and Sci-Fi fans in general will get likely enjoy this first entry from Denis Villeneuve. Expand
