My rating is relative to other science fiction films. If you do not enjoy science fiction, you will probably not particularly care for Dune. I almost never rate a film as high as 9 - but, I can't think of any other science fiction film I would consider better. I kept watching for weaknesses - but, every aspect of the film is excellent - even areas such as props, costumes, makeup, etc... everything is excellent in my opinion.

Casting is superb, acting is beyond excellent... as is directing, editing (sound and video), etc.

The story comes from the 1965 Frank Herbert novel which is universally appreciated as excellent science fiction. The screen play adaptation follows the original novel fairly closely and is excellent in my opinion.

I was not particularly that interested in seeing another film adaptation of the Dune novel... but, I could not stop watching this excellent 2 1/2 hour movie.

I know the Dune story - I read the novel several decades ago. I knew the first half of the 2 movies would be primarily backstory. I expect I will enjoy "Part Two" even more than "Part One".

For me it couples absolute brilliance and passion for big screen film making with head shaking missteps in story, character and some areas of weightless dialogue and exposition. An absolutely amazing, boundary crushing score, yet abused in its over saturation. I've seen the film 3 times so far. Imax+Amos. Imax+??? and HBOMax. DO NOT SEE THIS ON YOUR TV FOR FIRST TIME. It was absolutely made to be seen, dare I say, ONLY on the big screen, with the best sound system.

I'm a lifelong sci-fi fan (thanks, Dad) in my 6th decade. The Dune books have been read dozens of times. Will a fan's expectations ever be met? Probably not. But this movie is close. I love all of Villeneuve's films and style of revealing a story vs telling one. The efforts and commitment made by him and his production crew is always greatly admired. I think Warner's hesitation to give him the green light for the entire book at once is a gigantic miscalculation and has had an effect on why part 1 feels the way it does. Maybe once after some reflection with lessons learned, part 2 will bring it all together and be the masterpiece I know we all want it to be -- hopefully releasing it sooner than later.

Jessica is so well cast and played though, she might be my favorite character. For a two and a half hour runtime still felt quick on screen. The special effects and design are great, the sound design is good.

I wonder if people that don't know the source material liked it as much, because there is so much there under the surface.

I'm still just worried about Part 2+, specifically Paul's sister, Alia, that's going to be near impossible to do onscreen, and they've set up a very "humanized" version of Dune.

Denis Villeneuve did this epic story justice without overloading the audience with details. His pacing of the grand scope of the Dune universe was perfect. I give it a solid 10 as the screenplay, art, cinematography, acting and special affects were all done with maximum effort. This movie was filmed on location and you can really see the difference in the acting. This allowed Arrakis to be portrayed as the hot and unforgiving world that it should have been and it showed on the casts faces. I'm looking forward to Part 2.

Protip: read the books.

I wish they would dump these boring losers and there sandy bums and explore more of the galaxy and it's politics, as the directors apparently told them to emulate trees and be as wooden as possible. Which is pretty annoying, because I know these people can act, but are intentiontaly holding back from emoting, I'm assuming, because the director told them to. The moments they're allowed to show actual emotion and character is rare, as they instead stare intensely at each other, talking in "Very serious whispers" as a soundtrack that sounds like a tribal singer stubbing her toe plays in the background. If good worldbuilding and visuals are enough for you, I say go for it. This is clearly a movie for a audience who is nothing like me, who needs characters and emotion to stay invested. Otherwise, stay away and search for cheaper ways to fall asleep. Expand

It 100% excels at it's gorgeous visuals/music but it falls flat in too many other ways to be a worthy epic. We get long, gorgeous sweeping vistas but very poor to no real character and story development. Even the 1984 version even did a better job at storytelling and connecting with characters/motivations. The sometimes banal dialog doesn't give you the impression these are great houses with great leaders. There is a few poor casting picks and some gender/race swapping of characters that was politically motivated instead of story driven. I already worry this telling will stray even further away from source material to appease modern political sensibilities. Dune tells an unpalatable story about religious jihad and the ugly machinations of power. Why are you make a movie about source material you don't like it? While a remarkable effort that pushed music/visuals to new places, this is real sound and fury, but is far from communicating the story well. Expand

It's fantastic to see a new high concept Sci-Fi movie hit the big screen, it's been too long since we have seen something so epic and thought provoking as this. The visuals and actors are incredible with loads of atmospheric scenes and a mesmerising soundtrack. Villeneuve has made an incredible Dune movie here with an obvious love for much of the source material by Frank Herbert. My only problem with the movie is that I think it needed more of the runtime devoted to universe building and subtle exposition from characters. I understand Denis respects the audiences intelligence to work out what is happening, I don't expect the movie to explain everything to me but I think there wasn't enough about the lore and the politics of the galaxy in the year 10191. This new Dune is much better than David Lynch's Dune in many ways but I think Lynch's version fleshed out the Dune universe better. In the entire runtime of Dune 2021 there was no mention of the spacing guild, navigators, travelling without moving, mentats, why no computers and no insight into the larger universe at play. The most disappointing omission for me was the lack of the Emperor of the Known Universe, he is hugely important to the plot but you never see him back on planet Caitain you just hear his dignitaries say his name and title on planet Caladan. Denis Villeneuve's Dune is the new definitive Dune movie and will be even more definitive when part two is out but I think it could have been even better. A few more discussions between characters and more meetings around the table like in the book would have been very welcome. Herbert wanted to entertain his readers but also clearly wanted to teach the reader about the universe he had created but Villeneuve is obviously a director who cares more about character and spectacle which is fine by me as it's still an awesome movie to behold. Almost perfect. Expand

The entire cast is miscast, especially the mother, the father is made to look weak, the mother cries way too much for a stoic 'Archbishop' of her church, she helps him during the box trial (dumb AF, ruins the whole tension, and he doesn't even say the 'mind killer' poem, SHE DOES! WTF!?) I mean all of the men are neutered in this film except for Aquaman and the blue/red visuals of the shielding is annoying as **** and makes everything under the blue/red blurry so all fidelity is lost and fight scenes look like blurs fighting blurs (and not in the good way, like Heroes Season 4, Ep 1 Knife Fight with Peter vs the Circus Assassin). I could go on and on, from the gender/race bending, to the absolute DRONING horns of the 'soundtrack' (whoever decided horns on horns on horns would be good, should be fired). It's so full of empty areas, empty moments, and insignifigant stuff that's not in the books or OG renditions, it feels like this is what a zoomer who read the cliff notes of Dune 10 years ago in college would make as a "Dune" movie. Paul is emo as **** while he looks good as a 'young lord' type, he lacks the acting ability, the emotional range, and his 'outbust' on his mom at that scene is so petulent and whiny. I hardly ever see movies in the theaters but this one I made a point to go see and I absolutely loved it. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the same guy who did Blade Runner 2049, another film I love. But honestly I might have enjoyed this movie more. It's hard to say since this Dune is literally only Part 1 and whether a Part 2 will even be made is kind of relying on how well this movie preforms at the box office. So yes incomplete, but what's there in the 2 1/2 hours is fantastic gritty sci-fi eye candy. It's important to note that the Dune universe is very lore heavy and had I not been familiar with it by proxy of seeing David Lync's 1984 adaptation, I might have not enjoyed it as much as I did. That's not to say they didn't do a good job of explaining the key details about the universe however, seeing as how it is a bit slower than some people might expect I just think it will help many viewers get more invested into the film with a little background knowledge before hand. If Part 2 is ever made, and done to the same quality as Part 1, then I'd have no problem calling the complete package a 10/10. Expand

For those of you saying that the plot moves along too slowly or that pacing is an issue, don't worry, Michael Bay is still making movies that you can enjoy.

For those who love having layers of mood and emotional intensity build, and appreciate the feeling of being immersed in a classic sci-fi story, then this version of Dune absolutely nails it. What a great film. The movie is long, but the time flew by and I am excited for the next installment.

The acting performances were mostly beyond reproach, the cinematography was exemplary, and the sound and visual effects submerge you in this wondrous world and make it impactful and fulfilling to experience.

Bottom line: The movie isn't perfect, but it is a great example of what compelling story-telling and world-building are possible with a big budget is brought to bear. If you expected Guardians of Galaxy, sure, you'll be disappointed. This isn't that. If you want to raise your sights and experience a sci-fi story with more depth and feeling, then you can't lose with Dune.

Story was confusing and hard to follow. Visuals and acting were great. But somehow felt long and rushed at the same time. Too much was left on the cutting room floor to make the story feel more flushed out.

In 2001, we were given a mini-series that, while had it's shortcomings in terms of production and budget, gave us the truest look into a decent adaptation of the beloved book series that we have ever gotten. Denis Villeneuve's Dune - Part I is a solid, well produced attempt at adapting Frank Herbert's epic work, yet much is still left to be desired as well as the continued quandary that has followed it. Is Dune, with all of it's narrative complexity, depth, and grandeur, able to be adapted at all? The strengths of Villeneuve's attempt come in his eye for cinematography, visual effects, sound design, music, and general casting. Standouts include Stellan Skarsgaard as the Baron Harkonnen, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Jason Mamoa as Duncan Idaho, as well as Oscar Issacs passionate interpretation of Duke Leto. Timothee Chalamet's performance as Paul will undoubtedly polarize some as well as Zendaya's limited screen time as the love interest Chani. Hans Zimmer's score dazzles and accompanies the film beautifully. Greg Frasier's cinematography remains inspired work. Yet the strengths begin to fail as the massive weight of the narrative and key details, characters, and sequences are watered down from their source material or vanish entirely for the sake of the 2-1/2 hour runtime. To the uninitiated, this presents the film as hollow and lacking of context. Villains are nothing more than villainous for the sake of it. Sci-Fi action explodes and enthralls as it always does. For those who have been fans of Herbert's masterpiece and were hoping the film would deliver the ultimate incarnation of the book, those people will more than likely find it just as hollow as it's narrative. Following this is a subjective critique of the films visual style. In it's attempt to be futuristic, the film sticks to a modern, vogueish color palette of greys, beige, black, and browns. To put it bluntly, the film isn't nice to look at most of the time. Some will see this film as a firm first chapter in what is planned to be a trilogy, and Credit should be observed and given to Villeneuve for the decision to break the first novel into two parts. Yet even with good intentions, Dune: Part I stands on fragile foundational pillars, with audiences undoubtedly splitting their responses in many directions, but a bright future for it's intended next chapters could bring levity to the doubtful. Final Score: 6.5 out of 10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dune will probably go down in history as one of the Epics that the world needs. It’s necessary for a movie to have the one moment that you say “Wow I would watch that again”, this movie lacks that. You feel the repeat that there actions get boring in the middle of the movie. A clever set up for the 2 next installments. It feels like the weaker one of the soon to be trilogy. I would be excited for these next movies because it will be a more action filled movie. Expand

A lot of screen time is wasted on building up the atmosphere for the visuals with little time for the narration given how much plot is covered within the runtime of two and half hours. May be the plot might have been original when it was first established in the novel but offers nothing new for the viewers who have been following any of the pop culture icons of modern times. Game of thrones meets Mass Effect meets Arabian Nights. Its like some of the iconic set pieces from these popular shows and games were blended with a Christoper Nolan style visuals to secure a solid box office launch. The rich visuals only cater to those who are familiar with the plot but it does little to cover the story for those who are being introduced to the franchise for the first time. It was like watching the first episode of some sci-fi show that could have been condensed to 45 mins worth of plot instead of 2.5 hours if they just toned down the visuals. Expand

Timothée Chalamet gives his best performance yet, if he doesn't become a star from this film, I don't know what will.
For some of the downsides, the story can be somewhat dragged out and there are several long-winded segments that can make the film seem like it needs to pick up pace.

This film while it has some action is not action packed start to finish. What this film is, is part 1 and it spends a lot of time setting up the pieces for what is to come in the next film. The film is full of intricate world building that made me extremely interested in the universe. I came to this film as someone who has not read the book yet and after watching the film I am interested in reading the book. I am not a big sci-fi reader. The scenes are well shot, the story so far is interesting and the acting is good. The special effects are also good. Overall if you go in expecting a film that is merely a part one I do not think you will be disappointed. While it isn't a done deal I am pretty sure there will be a part 2 and if part 2 is of the same caliber has this film I believe the ratings for these two films will be much higher. This film is all about approaching it with the right expectations. Expand

It doesDune was a boring, unsatisfying experience. The characters just aren't likeable & while there is too little backstory, there also somehow manages to be too much uninteresting lore building and exposition, thanks to terrible pacing. It does nothing to hook you for the first hour, and the film never seems to properly establish the stakes. A giant worm eats a whole loader full of valuable space drugs/fuel, but who cares? Who does that effect? Why is everyone sword fighting when we have lasers and space ships? Are there actually any "good guys", or is everyone an a--hole?

The cast features many great actors, like Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, etc., but the film has so many disparate, esoteric elements it has to force in that none of these performers gets the screen time they deserve. There are no amazing moments like the disco dancing and tense dialog of Oscar Isaac from Ex Machina. Josh Brolin & Javier Bardem don't provide the intimate, deep, dark performances of No Country for Old Men. Dune is the opposite of those types of films: cold, distant & inhuman. It's technically sound, but it's got no heart, and no theme. It's empty.

Some of the concept designs are great but some just look silly (the dragonfly ships). I also fail to see how it's better than David Lynch's movie. That movie had good acting, suspense and above all it was filmed with 35mm film. That is what a movie is. The CGI while great in some spots looks cheap in other parts of the movie. Right now I'm honestly putting this film in my Top 10 or 11th im 50/50. I'm not kidding, this film is better than i thought it would be and i already thought this film will be perfect.

Please make Part Two!!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dune is excellent. The story simplify the book and make it clearer for the movie. Yes, it doesn't loose time on the navigator stuff, but DV did use the Witches clan in this story. Which, I think, clarifies a lot of things regarding Paul, his mother and the political factions. There are great epic scenes in this movie. The main battle is great but doesn't turned into a CGI fest. The sand worm are really done well. The way they present Paul visions is intriguing for the watcher. The music of Hanz is superb and the sounds effect in theatres are a blast to listen to. I though there were some colorized scenes that had some poor choice of settings. I give it 88%. A superior Dune adaptation and better rythm then Blade Runner 2049, don't miss out on it. This is way easier then reading the books but could serve has a great introduction. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film is beautifully shot. Paul, Gurney, and Jessica are portrayed well. The portrayal of Leto, Duncan, Stilgar, Janis, and Liet fall well short of what should have been a high bar. The Baron, Huey, and Hawat are barely seen. The film moves fast. All of the tension and build up through the first act of the book has been heavily condensed where it was not simply cut out. My wife had no idea what was going on most of the time, and I had to repeatedly pause the movie to give exposition dumps of backstory and character motivations. If you aren’t a Dune fan you might sense something is missing, and you would be right.

The picture hits the brakes when they make it to the desert. Unfortunately, this is where the film ends. I am hopeful that Villanueve will throw in more backstory and Harkonnen plotting in the second half, as this is what makes the books most enjoyable. If not it will be just another generic space opera.

Overall I am torn. I have seen the Lynch film, the Syfy series, and have read the novels, and I enjoyed them all for what they were. I was super hyped and feel a little let down. This just really didn’t do it for me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Grandeur, eye-cracking epic depiction of Frank Herbert’s jewel. Denis Villeneuve was an experience… Saw it in IMAX for the Art Direction, saw it in streaming to re-appreciate the storyline…
I have to say, Dune 2021 was the best cinematographic "experience" I had in a long time!
To be honest, I wasn’t expecting the keep-on-drooling-for-a-couple-of-years ending… But I’m gland it’s happening! Can’t wait to see the (remaining) cast to bring more stories to my eyes, ears and conscience…

Denis Villeneuve manage to hit the right balance with this adaption. A balance strong enough to make this difficult adaptation work. I just don't see how he could've made a better version clocking in at 2.5 hours. Would the movie be even better and more true if it were longer? Probably. But that's not how cinema works unfortunately. Even if we never get an extended version, I already know that I will be more than pleased with this one. I saw it twice at the cinema, and even if I unfortunately missed it at IMAX, I had one of the greatest cinema experiences I've ever had when I saw it at a dolby atmos cinema. This is without a doubt one of the greatest audiovisual moments in film history. I can't wait to watch it over and over on OLED when it comes out on UHD. To be transported back to Arrakis, again and again.

I'll be completely honest and say that I'm not Hans Zimmers biggest fans. I do respect him as one of the greatest composers in modern times, but at the same time I feel like he can become a bit too stagnant at times. His score for Dune is anything but stagnant though. I feel like it's probably the best score he's made together with Interstellar. Just a powerful force of nature that feels otherworldly and familiar at the same time. The DP Greig Fraser also did a wonderful job with the cinematography. When the news came out that Roger Deakins wouldn't shoot Dune, I was at first disappointed, but Fraser somehow managed to make me forget it. He helped frame a marvelous transportation to another world. When it came to the acting Chalamet, Ferguson, Isaac and Skarsgård all gave excellent performances and further helped solidify the film. Especially Chalamet and Ferguson, who without questions became Paul and Jessica. It'll be very interesting to see how characters from the film, as well as new ones, will be portrayed and develop in part 2.

Villeneuve continues to deliver astonishing cinematic experiences. Experiences that makes me question life itself and that follows with me long after the ending credits. For me he was already considered one of the greatest even before he made Dune. I've never seen anyone do what he has done since 2010. Seven movies, of which six I consider to be some of the best movies I've ever seen. Mind you, I have yet to see Polytechnique which came out in 2009. A movie I'm very much looking forward to see, as much as I dread it because of it's heavy subject. In the end I feel very inspired by his work. Inspired to keep creating, be it music or writing. And I can't wait for what's coming next. Hopefully it'll be Dune: Part 2. So that my longing for another trip to Arrakis – can satisfy my thirst.

This one in my opinion is the best Dune movie yet. It's not perfect but I think it's the closest we've gotten. The cast is excellent, the soundtrack is perfect, the pacing was very good in my opinion it included the essential parts of the book, and most importantly of all it seemed very faithful to the book with one exception I noticed which is a change of gender and skin color for one of the side characters. Not sure why they made this change but I was okay with it I think the actress did a fine job. I'm very impressed with the casting I really like this Jessica and in my opinion this is easily the best Gurney and Duncan yet. I think this Paul and Chani have potential too, I guess I'll know for sure in the next movie or two. The special effects were awesome i'm very pleased with what I saw and I'll have to say this is easily the most sci-fi version of Dune I loved the air ships and all the industrial stuff and the cool costumes and the stilsuits and the space ships and when you combine all of that with the incredible soundtrack by Hans Zimmer it's just a really cool experience. Can't wait to watch the next movie! Expand

Characters, scenes, dialogues all are made really well and together make perfect ansamble. Cast overall is perfect. It represents all races but makes it so naturally and organically (unlike other shows) that you just don't see any inconsistencies. Cast for the main characters is perfect too. Maybe Dave Bautista is little off in the role of villain because he is too kind-looking guy. All parts of this film are made to work together as one perfect whole. Story and its pace are perfect. This movie doesn't have scenes with histerics, shouting and all characters act really natural and as adults. All in all it is one of the best movies in this genre. It's not plagued with stupid cliches, isn't concentrated too much on action or psychological drama or parents-children problems. It is solid and refined movie and I hope it will save genre from decline. Expand

I"m probably in the minority wishing the movie had been a tad longer to better flesh out some secondary characters, but otherwise it was actually better than I expected, given the difficult source material.
Many have criticized the ending of this first part, but I think it was forced on the director by the studio decision to not finance both parts of the movie at once: given the several-year production pause, he had to stop at a point where his younger actors could age a bit without it looking jarring in the resulting film.

As a fan of Villeneuve's last three films, I expected some great things from Dune, and my expectations were met with flying colors. The visuals, the music, the performances, the action, all of it is absolutely fantastic. The film is very long and does have some flaws when it comes to pacing, but these points are insignificant when compared to the passion and detail that went into this epically large project. Just watch Dune, preferably in theaters if you're able to. Expand

Readers of the book will miss the lore building and politics (looking at you missing dinner scene) but regardless it’s a great start and I hope for more films. Expand

Amazing score, visually stunning. Great movie. The only set back is the main actor, he was not a good actor and was out-acted by even the bit actors of the movie. The rest of the acting was good and the movie is the best I’ve seen this year by far.

People said the books were among the best science fiction works out there. As a fan o sci-fi myself, I went and read the first book in anticipation for the film. I was surprised by how well the film handled the complex story proposed by the book, which is an amazing piece of science fiction literature, by the way. Additionally, the movie impresses with stunning visuals, involving atmosphere, convincing acting, stellar cast and a fitting, although a bit slow pace. People might get frustrated at how it ends, giving way to a second part, but for those who know the story from the source material, it is for the best that they preserved a two part structure to better accommodate the whole epic story. I strongly recommend the film to anyone, and I believe those that feared it might not have lived up to the expectations or the quality of the book may put their worries to rest. Expand
