It was like watching the first two and a half steps of an epic: Exposition. Inciting Incident. Rising Action. Then having to stand up and stretch my legs for an intermission. It's going to be a long and painful intermission because I was ALREADY PREPARED to sit through another two to three hours of this film, and now I will have to bide my time. It will be worth it. If this movie was good (and it was GOOD), then the next is going to blow our minds. Stunning visuals, and so faithful to the FEELING of the book that I even experienced something I NEVER thought I would experience again: The initial "oh, that's kind of silly and far-fetched" to the "I'm religiously invested in this world and its rules. Bless the Maker and His water...". No one can ever deny that Denis Villeneuve is a true-and-true fan of the novel. He was able to recreate even the most intimate nuances that all of us experienced differently when reading the book. Such an experience. See it in theatres, even if you don't end up loving or liking the film, you won't regret it. Expand

While I understand the Director is trying to initiate world building and plan for a multiple-film franchise, the golden rule is that each film has to stand on it's own. The pace of the film could have been a bit faster in some parts and a bit slower in others. For instance, we get a lot of time with Paul in that tent but the entire setup of the Atreides and the Spice Production was over in about 15 minutes. A few scenes cut to show the passage of some time and Leto getting reports of sabotage, broken equipment, and so forth could have been done in a way that covered that time more appropriately so it didn't feel rushed. A few cuts of Paul interacting with locals a bit more to establish this believe in Mahdi. Otherwise the first and second act feel a bit laborious and honestly leave the finale in the third act feeling rushed and instead leaving me with a fizzle. The fight at the end with the Fremen warrior was slow, and without tension whatsoever. In today's film landscape with high impact action films, if you're going to have a knife fight, it needs to be at or better than the best fight sequence out there, particularly for a budget of 165 million. Buatista and Zendaya's talents were wasted only serving as minor build-up to the next film. There were ways to include them to show the importance of both characters. So while I love the visuals and the modern digital impact on the cinematography, the story telling and character development (the best part of the Dune books) is still lacking somewhat. I mean Paul and his mother got quality time, but Leto felt empty and with a talent like Oscar Isaacs, that has to be a Direction issue. Overall I say a bit above mediocre. I'm hoping the next film is better, if it gets greenlit. This series will likely be evaluated as a whole rather than individual parts because thus far, the start is not what I'd hoped as an avid Dune fan. Expand

Pacing is flawed, acting feels mostly by the numbers, the truly emotionally evoking moments are few and far between because you often feel almost too distanced from the character(s) in question to empathize with them or you haven't been given the time to soak in what they feel before the movie is forced to move to the next step in the plot. The pacing somehow feels both rushed when it comes to getting from one plot point to the next and yet feels too slow when it comes to the establishment of characters' relationships with each other or giving them the time to express important inner monologues. For many characters it was very hard to care about them without having previously read the books. Expand

Let me just tell you about some of the amazing things about this movie; first of all the sound is great, you need to watch this in a movie theater. The acting was great, I didn't see a single bad performance. Not only is this a beautiful movie with stunning cinematography, I actually think this is THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN (I'm not even exaggerating). These are just some of the many great things about the movie. Also one of my big complaints about the old David Lynch version of Dune was that it didn’t actually take the time to explain the important things, and didn't make us see this beautiful world that I knew Dune had. Well this new version of Dune does everything right that 1984 version did wrong. Expand

It mostly stands on the strengh of its source material and Villeneuve's ability to not destroy it. But even so, it's a very long movie for the story it tries to tell and the pacing is quite a mess. Now, I haven't read the books but I did watch both the Lynch movie and the 2000 miniseries, so I am a bit familiar with the setting and story. And thank God for that, because otherwise I couldn't understand some of the politics of this world. This movie is 2 and a half hours long but going blind into it, you will know less about this universe then you would after watching the first 90 minutes episode of the miniseries, even though they cover mostly the same part of the story. Where is the Emperor? Where is the Navigator Guild? Sure, they are mentioned, but only pasingly and you can tell they are following the Farce Awakens formula of sequel bait questions. Instead of worldbuilding, we get pretentious visions of Zendaya in the desert. We get it, Paul has premonitions, no need for 5 long dream sequences to get that accross. On the acting side, it's quite solid, no surprise given the amount of talent involved. But the problem is the main lead, the entire movie depends on him and he doesn't do that great of a job. Part of the problem is the writting, as we don't get what character Paul really is. Sure, they show him as being naive, but mostly he comes off as edgy or emo and his big character moment at the end, where he has to take a man's life, just comes out of nowhere.

Now, visualy is probably where the movie is the strongest. The exterior shots look fantastic and Villeneuve really makes this seem like a distant planet. I can't say the same about the interiors, but it's mostly personal prefernce, as I think the set design in a movie about space aristocrats should look a bit more extravagant instead of the large empty rooms we keep seeing. Same goes for the costumes. Nothing too bad but they look more like something in a generic scifi video game.

Lastly, I would have probably give this a higher score if it wasn't for the horrible shoundtrack. Zimmer's score is an assault on your eardrums. And it doesn't matter if it's an action scene or a dramatic scene, his idea of music is to have a woman yelling very loudly in the background. And I don't know if it was just the theatre I watched this, but the sound is very loud.

All in all, Dunc is not a bad movie, just a bit of a dissapointment, as they really had a budget this time and could have been something special.

It doesDune was a boring, unsatisfying experience. The characters just aren't likeable & while there is too little backstory, there also somehow manages to be too much uninteresting lore building and exposition, thanks to terrible pacing. It does nothing to hook you for the first hour, and the film never seems to properly establish the stakes. A giant worm eats a whole loader full of valuable space drugs/fuel, but who cares? Who does that effect? Why is everyone sword fighting when we have lasers and space ships? Are there actually any "good guys", or is everyone an a--hole?

The cast features many great actors, like Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, etc., but the film has so many disparate, esoteric elements it has to force in that none of these performers gets the screen time they deserve. There are no amazing moments like the disco dancing and tense dialog of Oscar Isaac from Ex Machina. Josh Brolin & Javier Bardem don't provide the intimate, deep, dark performances of No Country for Old Men. Dune is the opposite of those types of films: cold, distant & inhuman. It's technically sound, but it's got no heart, and no theme. It's empty.

It contains the same setting-before-people - approach, the same kinky design for the Bene Gesserit, the same key scenes, the same foreshadowing in Paul`s dreams, the same fixation on sandworms etc.. But while Lynch made a Horror film out of Dune, adding gruesome and disturbing details, Villeneuve made a War Movie. All these intrigues and backstories just lead to some chaotic bloodbaths and annoying dialogues that sound as deep as in Conan The Barbarian. There are truly beautiful scenes, there is an unbelievable cast, everything is much more clearer than in Lynch`s film (doesn`t say much). The film really is an intense experience. But it is slow and joyless, it doesn`t do justice to Herbert`s utterly strange book, and Zimmer`s ethno-pomp makes my ears ring. A disappointment, especially after BLADE RUNNER 2049. Expand

The music was also generic and the fact that it was playing randomly at times when the main character would just casually look at the desert made it pretentious and cringe. What could anyone actually see in this film? Is it the couple lines that refer to political debates? Does that validate people's pseudo-intellectual bias in some way, I wonder. Because there's really nothing else this movie does. Either that or people's standards are so low they get hyped up by marketing and some cool CGI visuals. Pathetic Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The visuals are stunning, props for that. Sound is great. Unfortunate casting decisions bring the film down and make it basically unwatchable for me. Liet Kynes being female destroys the patriarchal society of the fremen which relegates females to mystic leaders. Making Liet female really destroys what Herbert was trying to get across, that fremen are related to modern day muslims and the oil/spice relationship. That is just one of the many poor casting decision that in my opinion, as a great fan of the previous dune movies and books, makes it basically unwatchable. The director caved too much to SJW fantasies. It interferes with the message and in this case its diametrically opposed to the book. Keynes dies in a volatile pre spice mass abandoned to the desert not stabbed in the back, not how he goes in the movie (male because its critical to the fremen). Volatile pre spice mass because its essential to the story. He dies alone because he is a desert creature. This treatment alone of Keynes makes the movie unwatchable to me.
Zendaya cant act, terrible choice for chani.
If you are a true fan of the books you are definitely not going to like this.

Through multiple re-readings, they have held up due to the depth and complexity of their mix of compelling characters, philosophical concepts, mysticism and political intrigue which work to paint a universe of immense scope. Sadly, Villeneuve's reductionist vision comes as a crushing disappointment in light of the richness of the source material.

Understandable, and even necessary, was the urge to streamline the storyline in order to make the dense original narrative comprehensible to unfamiliar audiences. This is even more the case given how much Lynch's attempt (and to a lesser degree Harrison's) struggled under its weight. However, in his quest for accessibility, Villeneuve and his screen writers cut too deep and gutted the narrative of SO much material that what makes the Dune universe truly compelling and unique is lost. The pendulum swinging so far in the opposite direction from the earlier film and mini series leave us with nothing more than just another forgettable, generic action sci-fi epic. While the universe is beautifully rendered and a visual treat to behold, very little beyond the visuals exists to recommend the film. Key elements of the social, political, ecological or anti-colonialist plots are carved out or downplayed to the point of forgettability and cliché. Key lines that could have quickly and easily added context and depth are omitted from the dialog. What remains is often underwhelming and delivered in a manner that misses accentuation of important points or conveyance of convincing and compelling emotion. This so effects characterization that the fate of the characters becomes at best an intellectual concern. Odd timing choices also exist where information that would have provided insight into the universe, character motivation and lend narrative tension are often provided either after the scenes in which they would have been most useful or so early in the film that by the time they're relevant they've been lost amongst the clutter of prior scenes and the slow drag the lack or real content turns the film into. The sheer missed opportunity Villeneuve's film represents is made even more shocking and tragic given the decision to cut the original novel into two films. With a 155-minute runtime to tell just half of the story, you would expect a significantly deeper and more nuanced tale, not one floating so much closer to the surface.

While I feel Villeneuve's approach to Dune was attempted with much more artistry and reverence for the source material, it nonetheless reminds me of Verhoeven's treatment of Heinlein's Starship Troopers, another conceptually rich novel that did not deserve the cinematic abuse it received. Villeneuve, with what feels like some more or less simple changes regarding direction and the screenplay, could have delivered to us not just a visually stunning film containing the action he was clearly aiming for, but also one that preserved Dune's more cerebral nature that has made the novels so engrossing for so many.

As has been the case for Villeneuve's directorial predecessors, the challenge of Dune has proven to be too much. Hopefully, we won't need to wait another 25 years for someone with greater vision to make an attempt to deliver the adaptation both Herbert's novels, and we as an audience, deserve.

Dune is spectacular at the visual and auditory level, but highly unpleasant to watch due to rapid scene switching and highly forgettable due to lack of depth.

The entire movie seems to be repeating a cycle of introducing a big new locale with bombastic music followed by a shallow exchange of a few oneliners or a brief action scene that has no flow or cohesion with the rest of the scenes, making the movie feel more like one long spectacular trailer than anything that tries to convey an actual story. Overall, it felt pretty similar to Jupiter Ascending, Valerian or any recent superhero movie: Spectacular visuals, but devoid of cohesion. Dune however lacks the cringy dialogue that the aforementioned movies had, cutting the dialogue to a bare minimum instead, which makes it even more difficult to understand the setting and maintain cohesion. Unfortunately, Duncan and Stilgar try their best to up the cringe factor here and there with their silly, out of place oneliners.

The moments where the movie does take a bit more time to resolve an important scene, the scenes are not done well, which prevents the viewer from feeling any emotional attachment: This is most clearly seen in the poorly executed scenes of Paul's test, the long but shallow dialogue between Paul and the Duke Leto, the scene between the Duke Leto and the Baron Harkonnen, and the flashy but highly disorientating combat scenes that just feel like an anticlimax more than anything the movie had spent considerable time building up towards. In general, the movie lingers long on scenes that lack any meaning but look pretty, and skips over the key scenes and interactions that are supposed to carry the story. I do not mind the fact that the movie does not always closely follows the book, as that is understandable for an adaptation, but I do mind that the movie does not utilize the opportunities of the movie medium for any kind of story telling or exposition besides the epic visuals/audio - this does not necessarily have to be through spoken dialogue, but narrative exposition can also be done in a visual way, which the movie does not do either.

The characters feel paper-thin and barely display any personal characteristics, making them flat, unlikable and unrelatable. There is nothing explaining the motivations or backgrounds of Piter, Yueh, Rabban or the Baron Harkonnen. The Harkonnen are evil because they have ghoulish faces and speak the few lines they are graced with a voice that does befit a Marvel villain, and that's pretty much all there is to it.

It is odd to see movie based on DUNE, arguably one of the more complex and intellectual science fiction IPs reduced to a movie that does not have a single memorable line of dialogue, compelling scene, or meaningful interaction between its characters.

The movie trickled along and fizzled out, and at the end I was left wondering what I had actually seen, as I remembered nothing of the story or felt anything for any of the characters. It was just a long sequence of brief impressive visuals that bear little to no relation to each other. The movie left me feeling empty, like I had watched a generic Marvel movie with no plotline, no background, no character development, hyperactive pacing, shallow/silly interactions, all covered up by epic bombastic visuals.

Too long and ponderous, too many flashback scenes, only half the book is covered. Half the time it feels rushed and the rest of the time it feels too slow. It feels like the Atreides are only in Arrakeen half an hour before the attack. We don't get to see anything of the emperor, third stage guild navigators, folding space, etc. We see little of the Baron and nothing of the emperor or Feyd Rautha. Wellington Yeuh and Thufir Hawat are barely in it, despite being important characters in the book. Instead we get endless premonitions of Chani and vistas of the desert. Jason Mamoa is great as Duncan Idaho, but all the other characters seem mis-cast, particularly Timothy Chalamet who is too wimpy to play a future ruler who will set the universe on fire with his war of Jihad. He is dour and sulky throughout, as though he's just been told to tidy up his bedroom. Much like Blade runner 2049, also directed by Denis Villeneuve, the sets and scale are great but the protagonist spends most of his time gazing into the middle distance, pondering his "destiny". Much prefer Lynch's 1984 version of Dune - far weirder with more memorable performances overall. Not only that, we got the whole book as well. Expand

"Mirrors and copulation are abominable, since they both multiply the numbers of men" (Borges, 1940). Paraphrasing, I would say that the sagas and, more generally, the epic and the foundation myths as hypertrophic narrative that purports to minimize the gap between the map and the territory of existence, reduplicate its abomination, therefore they are invariably, inexorably, inderogably dystopian. I have not yet managed to grasp the usefulness of this compulsion to repeat, for sure it is one of my innumerable limitations. Herbert's text re-proposes the problem and Jodorowsky, Lynch, Villeneuve were unable to solve it: could they have? The sufficiency goes to the explicit tragicity of the beginning, with the annihilation of the House of Atreides. In a few minutes we see their noble ideals, intentions, projects fade, and the scene in which Oscar Isaac, the Duke Leto, is stripped of all this, is literally laid bare and, in agony, even fails to kill his own enemy, is something that I will carry with me and inside me for a long time. Concubine, son and fate of the survivors left me indifferent.

By it's nature it's an incomplete story but it really feels like there's something missing to make a satisfying standalone experience.
That being said, it's another gorgeous film by Villeneuve. The cinematography and locations are great, the art direction & costume designs are top notch, and the soundtrack is one of Hans Zimmer's best works. It's probably the closest someone can get to a faithful adaptation of the first chunk of the book without being 4 hours long, which I would definitely watch multiple times.

First the good - There's basically 2 ways to approach a film with source material such as this. Either make it "fun-size", and palatable with people who purely want escapism (i.e the mass public), or try and evoke the nuance and political complexity interwoven throughout Herbert's novel. I'm frankly really glad they went the latter avenue, and overall I think the info overload actually pays off well. The acting, special effects, cinematography, aesthetic, costumes, and overall feel was stellar. It felt epic without being pretentious, and I would imagine seeing it on the big screen (yes, I'm one of the toadies who streamed it) would only add to the awe. However, much of the dialogue and the pacing were rather bland. A lot of pure exposition. As I said, all the actors did a really good job (with the possible exception of Javier Bardem, who's accent was jarringly distracting to me. Why does he sound so drastically different to the rest of the Fremen? I half-expected him to say "fine, we'll settle it with my lucky quarter" at any moment) but with an oft one-dimensional script, there's only so much that can be done.

And lastly, my real chagrin. The pacing. I don't know if the original novel frankly has enough sourced material to warrant two long movies. This movie is 2 1/2 hours. They could so easily trim 30 minutes. A major pet-peeve of mine in any movie is when they have a bunch of slowed-down walking scenes, void of any dialogue. There's a TON of said shots riddled throughout the film, that only makes the rather slowed-pace only feel uncomfortably more so. And they could have been clearer. Hard to tell who's who and even what faction is what sometimes.

I did enjoy it. I'm super excited for part 2. I don't however, recommend it to people who are on the fence about seeing it, or aren't a sci-fi/Dune fan. I just wish that when thinking about it a day later, I wasn't focused on questionable approaches or confoundment with certain elements. The Worms are worth the price of admission.

How does it compare to Lynch's Dune? Each of these two adaptations succeeds in the areas where the other failed, and vice versa. In a same way, one is telling aspects of the story that the other left in a corner.

Let's start with the music. The soundtrack by Zimmer was rather generic, and while it would perhaps please the yuppie yoga crowds, we're here in a totally different world, soundscape-wise, to the psychedelic, New Age soundtrack that made Lynch's Dune so great. The latter soundtrack was a standalone music gem in itself, adding stellar quality to a rather flawed movie.

The striking, dramatic visual poetry (I'm thinking of the repeating image of the hand opening while hearing about the "sleeper awakening") also isn't there much. A lot of witchy murmurs and visions Paul is having are there, but here they clearly lack originality as this stuff is taken directly from Lord of the Rings. A lot in this movie in fact makes it sound like it's trying to be a Lord of the Rings... something that is plaguing many modern blockbusters. While Villeneuve is a decent filmmaker with a vision, this is a Canadian director working with a Hollywood studio, not a Peter Jackson working with WETA studios outside of Hollywood's (and Harvey Weinstein's) grasp, with a plethora of original ideas, home-grown artists and visual magic-makers.

So production quality consideration first... this is an overall beautifully made film that doen't refrain from grandiose scope, yet it is rather sobre and extensive. It definitely isn't near the baroque insanity of Lynch's film that is, along with the soundtrack and photography, one of the greater sides of the movie.

Spaceships, buildings are huge, yet not the dope byzantine visual awe that only directors like Lynch, Jeunet or Wes Anderson would create. I didn't get especially awed with the Guild's Ship that is basically just a flattened giant concrete donut in space... All this grey stuff flying around -some looking like house appliances from posh ultramodern kitchens- ain't very appealing or surprising. So while Lynch had to struggle with many technical limitations, which made his more sci-fi stuff look silly, the gothic/art deco design behind it all was still vastly better inspired than what we got here.

On the other hand, it has the narrative maturity that Lynch's take didn't really have (you can't make me forget that ridiculous intro with De Laurentis' daughter). The movie is well-structured and methodical, being careful about the details that matter... but only up until the third act which becomes very confusing and bloated. A bunch of narrative developments happening in the end makes it feel like there's two or three open endings.

There's also in this third act a moment of a few seconds where Lady Jessica is having a clearly apparent desire for her son Paul, not long after Duke Leto's death. Okay... an Oedipal spin can be interesting to bring into such a space mythology, yet we're left asking: how was it needed? Why such a strange detail, or does the director really knows where he's going with this? As others said Jessica's character seems more involved with her son than her husband, so I don't see where this fits with the book, that contains no apparent incest subtext like this, where Jessica's struggle is more about dealing with the discipline of the Bene Gesserit cult and standing for her husband and her son.

I liked the idea of having Chani introduced as reluctant towards Paul, after being hinted as completely otherwise in Paul's dreams, as this sets a more interesting evolution between the two characters. I was positively surprised also by this singer Zhendaya as she did deliver a solid performance for a starter. Same for Javier Barbem powerful, raw, feral composition that makes him feel like taken straight out of Lawrence of Arabia.

It is possible that the combination of the two parts (or three?) will render this film greater than it is now. A lot still has to happen, and this one feels like more of an introduction to a universe. It succeeded at NOT making Lynch's film look badder than it was. It even made me want to watch it again.

But I don't think I expected what we got. There is an emotional intensity and just, humanity, to this version that I've never seen in Dune before. It's not even really there in the book.

I first read Dune as a child, and again when I was a bit older. I've read the second and third books twice as well. I've started the fourth twice, and left off of it twice, it failing to hold my interest, but that is a discussion for another time.

I love the 1984 David Lynch film. Some people do, others don't. It's very much a product of its time: a flashy spectacle with a flair for costume design and an excellent soundtrack. My memories of the later Sci-Fi channel miniseries are faint, but I can say it never captured my imagination the way the first film and the Westwood strategy games did. To say nothing of my imaginings of the lost 70s-era Jodorowsky adaptation.

A friend asked me if Dune: Part One made up for the Jodorowsky version never coming out. I told him I didn't think I was qualified to say. But this film brought the story of Paul Atreides to vivid, surreal life in a way I never anticipated.

The brilliant cast, excellent mechanical design, and soundtrack with incredible presence and intensity come together almost flawlessly. As a simple filmgoer, I cannot reasonably say how this film might have been improved further.

I appreciate the small details as well, like styling Chalemet's hair to resemble Kyle MacLachlan's in the '84 film.

Every so often a production with the budget of Dune: Part One turns out to be very good, and I reminded that filmmaking as a medium has not quite yet been subsumed by moneygrubbing hacks in suits who bow, scrape and grovel at the altar of Mickey Mouse.

I learned only just prior to its release that this flm was to be part one of a series, and went into production with full knowledge that it might not get a continuation. I can only hope its quality and success means that it will.

Empfehlenswert!

It's one part Star Wars, one part Game of Thrones, yet it succeeds here in not feeling derivative of either. There's enough intrigue to keep you guessing, and enough spectacle to keep you watching.

The art direction and narrative are both great at conveying the unique setting and world of the series without relying overtly on exposition. The world is conveyed well through form and function, allowing the world of the film to feel natural, as it does in the books. It is sometimes difficult to see that the film is setting up for a sequel, however that's simply a necessity here given that this film is based upon a book, which itself is part of a series. Splitting the film, while sometimes an unpopular choice, is entirely necessary if you're going to attempt to display the full scope of Herbert's world.

The film is well cast, and well directed. The art design and CGI really nail the unique nature of Dune's world, one of Neo-Feudalism, mixing this space age civilisation with a medieval twist. While it ends with a lot left to give, it holds the promise of a bright future for this series that makes this film more than worth the watch and great first entry into (hopefully) a great series.

There is a documentary as well, it's a worth watch to see how well he was prepared for the movie. Another attempt was by David Lynch which was made into a film in 1984, which is said to be a cult movie. Even Lynch was hugely disappointed by the final product. When Villeneuve announced the film, the whole world of film lovers were eagerly waiting. Happily, he did not disappoint us. Part 1 is amazing. It is planned to be a two parts film, and the audience are waiting for the sequel. Let's wait and see for the conclusion.

Yeah I know I’m very late to the party with this review, don’t blame me it’s been a mental year. I’ve finally seen the visually spectacular Dune and much like the fanbase for the original cult classic this new remake is sure to bring in a whole new bunch of sci-fi fans.

Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) is the son of a noble family and must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. Also starring Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgård and Josh Brolin. A truly brilliant line up of talent altogether and Denis Villeneuve was the perfect director to take on a new Dune adaptation. Throw in a completely full on Hans Zimmer score and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a modern day epic. A highly immersive cinematic experience with incredible attention to detail. Everything is allowing you to fall into this new world and lose yourself in the magic of cinema. Epic really is the word to describe it, I’ve also seen the phrase space opera to describe Dune and I’d agree that’s an accurate description. I love the star studded cast but particularly Timothée Chalamet leading the movie, he gives an excellent performance. As a Zimmer fan it’s no surprise I loved the awe-inspiring score for Dune. The visuals, the music and the entire cast all perfectly complement each other to create an epic sci-fi movie.

I haven’t seen the original or read the book so I’ve no idea where the story is going next but I am excited for Dune Part II and together I’d expect Part I and II to make a terrific double bill. As amazing as Dune is it’s still only half a movie and I do feel frustrated that it’s split into two separate movies with likely a two year gap in between them. It won’t become clear until Part II as to whether separating it into two films will be worth it though in most cases splitting a story in two only results in a dragged out movie with a wrecked story arc, looking at you Hobbit trilogy. I can’t say everyone will feel the same but for me the feeling of all set up for a good portion of Dune Part I was annoying and I can only hope Part II is worth it.

It can be a daunting task to take on a big budget sci-fi movie and bring some originality to the genre especially when there’s an endless parade of Star Wars movies and TV shows to complete with. Villeneuve has shown us what he is capable of with Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. With Dune, he has not only created one of the best looking sci-fi movies in years but made something that feels new in a world of unoriginality. Recommended for all the sci-fi fans.

While the soundtrack to the movie is one of the most exceptional work (the overly indulged) Hans Zimmer has put forward recently. The movie is exceptional and intriguing to watch albeit through its appropriate slow-paced scenes that are full of intensity, feeling, and suspense. All put together picture perfectly and carried out immaculately by all involved. Its ending however - left much to be desired as it feels terribly unfulfilled and inconclusive. Putting increased pressure on the sequel to go above and beyond in fulfilling audiences on all that both movies should be. Expand

I like the cinematography, aesthetic value and resemblance to the book. This is generally speaking, but Dune is "un-filmable". I appreciate Villeneuve's effort, it surely is a marvel, but the ending of the movie feels slightly rushed.

The Dune finally got the movie adaptation it deserves. The movie is amazing with everything it has. Cinematography and soundtrack are on another level. And it sticks to the books and doesn't ruin the story at all. I love it, amazing work.

Stunning visuals and one of Hans Zimmer’s best scores pair together to bring to life an incredible sci-fi epic. Chalamet does well in his first blockbuster role and is supported by a solid cast. Should be seen on the big screen.

Maybe he wanted to make a trilogy or maybe even 5 movies but the budget is so big that he felt he had to make two films in order to assure that he could complete the story.

This film is visually and technically astonishing, but like i said before it’s so rushed and everything is happening so fast that you can’t take a minute to actually focus on what’s going on. If you’re not a fan of the Duniverse or have read the books you will definitely be lost. The screenplay and writing is good but for a film based on a book series with so much material the story is kind of lacking.

The film itself truly is a visual wonder, the costumes, art direction, makeup and visual effects are top tier and will definitely be a strong contender for a few Oscars. That being said, I’m really looking forward to seeing this new Dune franchise expanded into more movies and TV shows, with the creative talent behind it, this could rival that of bigger franchises such as Star Wars and other sci-fi properties.

p.s. Timothée Chalamet is extremely overrated

Before watching this movie i expected it to be slow paced, patient and visually stunning movie coming from Denis Villeneuve and mostly i was right and it it a good movie but did it live up to the hype for me...no

The first half of this movie was a slow burn, took its time with the story-telling, character introductions and mainly focused on world building complimented with amazing visual shots from Denis Villeneuve and although i enjoyed some aspects of the world building, great visual effects and scenery and the mystery of the story and Paul Atreides' involvement in it, the first half of Dune was mostly uninteresting to me especially with mostly average characters(more on that later).

The second half however picks up with the pace and delivers the sci-fi epic that i wanted with good action, amazing set pieces and i know i've said it before and i'm gonna say it again THIS MOVIE WAS VISUALLY AMAZING and directed well but most importantly the story and pacing started to gel together well too along with the mystery aspect of the movie kept me kinda hooked but still had problems with paper thin character arcs and the when the movie is getting really interesting it ends abruptly.

Now on the characters, besides Timothée Chalamet's character Paul Atreides who is the protagonist of the movie, i didn't feel an emotional connection with most of the characters most of them didn't have interesting arcs if any at all and it's not because of the acting, i mean look at the cast of this movie it's impressive and there wasn't any poor acting performance in sight all the actors gave their all in their roles but that can only carry you so far if i didn't care for the characters.

The most interesting characters were Duke Leto Atreides, Lady Jessica Atreides and Duncan Idaho(Jason Mamoa was the only one who looked like he was having fun in the movie and was badass too) and was the second best character of the movie.Zendaya wasn't really in this movie as i thought she would be even though it's implied heavily she is integral to the story but that payoff doesn't really happen. The villains were your typical bad guy villain with average motivations although Stellan Skarsgård as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen was creepy.

For the protagonist Timothée Chalamet gives a good performance as usual. Paul Atreides' story and journey was your typical hero journey although it's uniquely told as his arc is full of mystery as doesn't really get resolved by the end of the movie but i liked the dynamic between him and his parents especially the beginning with his father which was a cool moment. So with Dune being a slow burn, patient movie and average characters it relies heavy on the plot and story-telling for it to be a success and for me personally i feel it wasn't enough to make up for the flaws i had with Dune like the heavy slow paced and kinda boring first half, not feeling invested with most of the characters and some of the world around Dune feeling mostly empty for a sci-fi but i did enjoy the second half more, the action was well directed, the acting performances were really good and the movie is a visual joy to experience thanks to Denis Villeneuve's directing complimented with good cinematography and some aspects of the score(kinda annoyed me at times but it was mostly good).

I think it's a good movie but it's just not for me at the end of the day. I respect the unique take it has especially with the movie being released in Hollywood nowadays so i think this movie is necessary but personally might not watch it again.

Beautiful film in all, to be seen absolutely, directed by Villeneuve director remember of masterpiece films such as Blade Runner 2049, Prisoners, Arrival. The cast is really excellent, spot on everything, excellent direction, does not take your eyes off the screen for a single moment, not tired and not boring (indeed passionate and a lot) as the first DUNE was. The film that reflects throughout the novel, we hope that there are other sequels since it is not finished and is for now the first, I think of at least a trilogy. I recommend to all fans of science fiction and not, to see it as it is not disappointed but rather dazzled by its beauty.

That being corny, action, sci-fi flick with Patrick Stewart behind it. Then I found that Denis Villeneuve was directing it. Being the Director of such hit Films as Dune inspires with a cinematic flare and style which, while in the same wheel house as Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival I knew I would be in for a treat.

This does an amazing job of creating a distinct style both visually and story wise to make it feel like an entirely separate project from all of Villeneuve's previous works. The story of Dune: part one is exactly as it is in the book, hits a lot of classic sci-fi troupes for better or worse. The real star of this film is the pacing at which the story unfolds. Choosing to skip a lot of the tedious story telling aspects from the previous film Dune portrays the fall of House Atreides as a spectacularly corrupt and horrific affair. While not a perfect telling, Dune definitely a very unique and compelling one about religious fanaticism, betrayal, and prophecy. With all the quiet mystic and world building of his previous films Villeneuve masterfully displays why he is one of the most celebrated directors of a generation! My only real disappointment is that I will have to this on 2 parts.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Where is Feyd Rautha, Paul's equal opposite? Where's the music? Where are the mentats of the spice mining guild? For that matter where's more than 2 lines of dialogue for Thufir Hawat and Piter De Vries? But really the most disappointing is the backstory and lack of character building and plot depth of Wellington Yueh who should have had the single-most pivotal role of the entire first chapter. what was the purpose of leaving all that essential narrative out? Minimalism? for 30 extra minutes of watching Jason Momoa fight?
Where's the thematic difference in the houses? No aristocratic depth, no totalitarian depth. Where is the weirding way? Perhaps worse is the 'Hey, dude' dialogue. Aside from that I counted 3 times they bring up the idea of 'desert power', which in David Lynch's 1984 adaptation had empathetic meaning, which in David Villeneuve's version comes off more like in-phrase. 'Like, it's all about the desert power dude.'

The sound is borked also, where you have to turn it way up to hear some of the crap dialogue only then to have it blow your speakers out when the 'Tha-wumps' happen. Was this done on purpose to stand -in because they weren't really interested in creating something with any actual depth?

why did Paul's mother have to coax him on his 'rite of passage'? Dumbed down for feminism? Why was the intro so poor, like kindergarten exposition?

Ok, now onto what they got right. While the dialogue is poor, they did emphasize a sense of seriousness. No Jokey smurfs on this run, kiddos. The scenic widescreen shots were very good, the computer generated tech was amazing. the engagement with the Fremen was decent as it demonstrated the brutal nature of their people and the cost to earn their trust. But probably the most empathetic thing I find with this 'B' action flick is a lack of 'woke' overtones.

I was intrigued by the film and decided to see it in the cinema. I am so very glad I did. The soundtrack by Hans Zimmer really gave this movie a kick. But apart from the music, the film didn't lag behind visually and it is definitely a nice spectacle full of sandy locations that I really enjoyed. So the film is nice to look at and nice to listen to when the music is playing. But what about the plot itself in the finale? This is where it's just beginning and I'm slowly not sure what I should start with first. I'll be honest. As much as I enjoyed the film and was interested in what was happening on screen, it just had some minor cracks in the finale and a few things I didn't understand. I thought that the fault was on my part and that I simply wasn't giving the film enough attention, and ultimately I still think that now. On the plus side, a couple of friends told me after it was over that they didn't really know what was going on in the story, which is a bit odd after all. I'm not saying the movie is complicated or that it throws too much information at you in too short a time. On the contrary. New Dune is 2 and a half hours long, and it's only the first episode. There's plenty of space, but there are just a few families, a few names, and I just don't know how it happened, but I got lost here and there. After it was over, I spent the following days reading information on the internet and read the plot a few more times and I'm pretty clear. I'm even more sorry that I didn't understand some things during the movie, because the story of the new Dune is great in my opinion, although it's kind of one big intro that prepares you for the next installment. I am, however, looking forward to the next installment, and incredibly so. Both to find out what happens next, but more importantly I hope it will be another excellent cinema experience like this one was. I understand director Denis Villeneuve wanting to throw this film into theaters. While it will also be an experience at home with some better TV on salted audio, it still won't be the same feeling as sitting in a cinema with a proper screen in front of you with proper sound. For me, a great film that I recommend. Expand

For me it couples absolute brilliance and passion for big screen film making with head shaking missteps in story, character and some areas of weightless dialogue and exposition. An absolutely amazing, boundary crushing score, yet abused in its over saturation. I've seen the film 3 times so far. Imax+Amos. Imax+??? and HBOMax. DO NOT SEE THIS ON YOUR TV FOR FIRST TIME. It was absolutely made to be seen, dare I say, ONLY on the big screen, with the best sound system.

I'm a lifelong sci-fi fan (thanks, Dad) in my 6th decade. The Dune books have been read dozens of times. Will a fan's expectations ever be met? Probably not. But this movie is close. I love all of Villeneuve's films and style of revealing a story vs telling one. The efforts and commitment made by him and his production crew is always greatly admired. I think Warner's hesitation to give him the green light for the entire book at once is a gigantic miscalculation and has had an effect on why part 1 feels the way it does. Maybe once after some reflection with lessons learned, part 2 will bring it all together and be the masterpiece I know we all want it to be -- hopefully releasing it sooner than later.

Every character has a reason and feels fleshed out. The plot is really easy to follow ( I haven't read the books or watch the old film) but it never holds your hand or treats you like you're dumb and need everything to be explained through some cheesy dialogue. IT SHOWS. It open your senses with marvelous visuals and sound, and let the story go through. So please watch it in cinemas, it deserves it.
I wish the combat scenes were a bit more visceral but I can see why villenueve was a bit cautious in this subject, and it feels justified.

I'm crossing my fingers that in the world we live today a movie like this can thrive and we get to see the second part.

People claiming that it was hard to follow simply cannot piece together the masterfully subtle clues and storytelling. People claiming that characters were soulless must have watched with their eyes closed and missed the fantastic and intense acting. Someone claimed the technology didn't make sense, for example asking "why do they have spaceships yet use swords instead of guns?" The movie clearly demonstrates (multiple times) that you cannot simply use guns against the personal forcefields because they intercept high-velocity projectiles. Some of these troll reviewers must love being spoon-fed exposition because they are clearly not capable of observing and interpreting storytelling without frequent explanations about everything in direct terms so they don't get lost. Yes, Dune has multiple books of complex lore that could not be fit into five movies, much less two. But, the movie presents enough of it in a way that is understandable and not overwhelming. You just have to pay attention, observe, and use deductive reasoning to figure some things out. It really isn't hard. Some of these reviewers are absurdly dense. Anyone who has read the Dune series could not have asked for a better film adaptation, especially given the modern climate of CGI-clickbait movies with ham-fisted or nonsensical storytelling full of plot holes. Perhaps because I didn't expect much from Villeneuve's film. The fact is that, firstly, Herbert's book is fundamentally impossible to film, since its "highlight" is focused on the thoughts and inner experiences of the characters, which often do not coincide at all with their behavior. Secondly, the political climate in Hollywood and the United States in general is now not free from the influence of one of the ideologies, which openly imposes certain taboos and prescribes certain conventions for filmmaking. The first could not but lead to a simplification of the plot by the director, inclined to visual narration. And the second factor inevitably destroys the balance built by the author between factions and sexes in the book, as well as the atmosphere in general and Herbert's religious and political hints. Both of these factors are present in Villeneuve's film, but, surprisingly, Denis still managed to "loop between the drops", creating not quite an adaptation of Herbert's Dune, but quite a fascinating version of his own "Dune". The audiovisual component, as always with Villeneuve, is luxurious, and even to some extent compensates for the simplification of the plot and the unrevealed thoughts and experiences of the characters. Modern political taboos and conventions are also present, manifesting themselves in cut out "politically incorrect" dialogues, shifted accents, altered scenes, races and even the sexes of the characters, but they are skillfully smoothed out without disturbing the atmosphere or mocking the common sense of the viewer, thus not destroying the wall between viewer and narration. Villeneuve has managed to make the viewer, at least me, to wait for the continuation of the narration, interrupted in mid-sentence. By the standards of modern Hollywood, Dune is a great movie. Expand

However even in condensing Dune into a two part film, Denis Villeneuve has packed in an immense amount of detail that will finally satisfy longtime fans of the series. Pretty much casting was near perfect. The weapons, costumes, vehicles, and architecture are in a class of their own, truly presenting a partially familiar, partially alien, and wholly immersive vision of the 102nd Century AG. The sound design and cinematography are also top notch, to the point where I really do recommend you see it for the first time in a theatre. Dune 2021 absolutely deserves the comparisons to the Lord of the Rings films in that it brings an exalted work of fiction to life in a way that will amaze newcomers to the series as much as longtime fans. Truly Denis has done something amazing here, and I hope immensely that he gets to realize his vision in adapting Frank Herbert’s work at least through Dune Messiah. This really is about as good as science fiction can get. Expand

Dune may suffer from a slow start, but as the film progresses and its narrative develops it becomes a welcome addition to the seemingly dead genre of Long, narrative driven Blockbusters.

At the start the characters can come across as a little flat, and there is a lot of terminology and lore to learn relatively quickly, but the payoffs for all this buildup are worth the initial grind. The universe of the film itself is intriguing, and its sense of atmosphere and tension grows more and more investing as the story progresses.

Judging as a film fan rather than one determining accuracies or lack thereof from Herbert's universe. ----

2.5 feels long with a slow burn like this, but justified considering the massive undertaking that Dune is. Rushing through the material any faster would undoubtably push this film into sci-fi action camp.
Villeneuve captures both intimate moments and armada-scale scenes while showing immense care / craft for both, while holding our interest as we ping pong between the two. Paul's character starts in a juvenile depiction, and we are brought up to speed alongside him throughout the film. We experience his world and it's sudden shifts in parallel which helps a viewer stomach the leaps we must take. This style also helps us justify where his character and the film ends.

The movie is well acted, but the sparse dialogue, furrowed brows and 1000 yard stares as the main dish is a tight box to play in. Yet everyone seems to deliver quite well. Chalamet is great and certainly delivers on carrying the film.

The sound design is incredible, see it in a theater or invest in sound (you won't regret it.) The cinematography and CG are beautiful. Blade Runner serves as a fairly stellar depiction of a some-what distant future, where Dune mixes in more mysticism and fantasy and takes us far off-world without being hokey (which is a difficult thing to do). It's difficult not to see a lot of semblance to Star Wars baked in between the literal war in the stars we're watching, Oscar Isaac, sand monsters, and the Annakin ora floating over Paul. If Star Wars was made strictly for adults, this would be an acceptable form (although a bit more graphic violence could help this movie deepen the seriousness of what we're seeing, but doesn't feel mandatory or missed here.)

The only disappointment of the film is realizing you've spent so much time simply to google "Dune 2 release date" considering the film feels half-way through (or less) of whatever it's trying to deliver. Looking forward to seeing where this goes.

Dune delivers. I grew up in the 80s reading the classics, Heinlein, Asimov, etc. Dune was one of my favorites, but at the time I was too young to process the politics and the humming back story that is hinted at by the characters. The other movies didn't do the book justice, this one did. Unlike a lot of modern movies the characters are likeable. Their situation difficult and their loyalty to each other admirable. This all comes through in this movie in a way that it didn't in the other movies. I'm re-reading the book now since I saw the movie.

The bottom line is, this is a really good sci-fi movie of a really good sci-fi book. I, like others, am glad I knew going in that is is part 1 of 2. Really though, some scenes are drawn out that didn't need to be and I would have preferred a 3 1/2 hour epic movie that didn't need a sequel and frankly I think it would have been better that way.

My complaint that knocks off a star or so: the ship designs and sets. The colors are OK and good to look at but the camera angles don't feel like you're moving. And the ships are just a big block that "hangs in the air much in the way that a brick doesn't". The book doesn't bother describing these things, but the movie should have. Seriously just jump on pinterest and type "starships" and you could find 100 talented artists who make their starships look cool and functional at the same time. The book can be forgiven for not taking this seriously since our imagination can fill these things in, but after Star Wars in 1977 showed that starships can be functional AND look cool, there is no excuse for just making giant blocky starships.

The book isn't very faithfully followed; if you read it you'll see why (some plot points haven't aged well), and its worth a read. A couple of characters are oversimplified and a couple of plot lines abandoned, but hey, when is the last time you read a book? Well now you have a reason since the movie ends half way through.

Anyway, this is a great film. A great sci-fi film. The acting is good to great and the action scenes are great. See it in the theater, it is worth it.

In 2001, we were given a mini-series that, while had it's shortcomings in terms of production and budget, gave us the truest look into a decent adaptation of the beloved book series that we have ever gotten. Denis Villeneuve's Dune - Part I is a solid, well produced attempt at adapting Frank Herbert's epic work, yet much is still left to be desired as well as the continued quandary that has followed it. Is Dune, with all of it's narrative complexity, depth, and grandeur, able to be adapted at all? The strengths of Villeneuve's attempt come in his eye for cinematography, visual effects, sound design, music, and general casting. Standouts include Stellan Skarsgaard as the Baron Harkonnen, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Jason Mamoa as Duncan Idaho, as well as Oscar Issacs passionate interpretation of Duke Leto. Timothee Chalamet's performance as Paul will undoubtedly polarize some as well as Zendaya's limited screen time as the love interest Chani. Hans Zimmer's score dazzles and accompanies the film beautifully. Greg Frasier's cinematography remains inspired work. Yet the strengths begin to fail as the massive weight of the narrative and key details, characters, and sequences are watered down from their source material or vanish entirely for the sake of the 2-1/2 hour runtime. To the uninitiated, this presents the film as hollow and lacking of context. Villains are nothing more than villainous for the sake of it. Sci-Fi action explodes and enthralls as it always does. For those who have been fans of Herbert's masterpiece and were hoping the film would deliver the ultimate incarnation of the book, those people will more than likely find it just as hollow as it's narrative. Following this is a subjective critique of the films visual style. In it's attempt to be futuristic, the film sticks to a modern, vogueish color palette of greys, beige, black, and browns. To put it bluntly, the film isn't nice to look at most of the time. Some will see this film as a firm first chapter in what is planned to be a trilogy, and Credit should be observed and given to Villeneuve for the decision to break the first novel into two parts. Yet even with good intentions, Dune: Part I stands on fragile foundational pillars, with audiences undoubtedly splitting their responses in many directions, but a bright future for it's intended next chapters could bring levity to the doubtful. Final Score: 6.5 out of 10. Expand

The cinematography, score, acting, and costume design is all top notch. The decision to change the opening from the novel to a battle sequence involving Fremen and Harkonnen followed by a introduction of Caladan does a better job of setting up what’s at stake and the complex political background. I still have concerns those who haven’t read the novel will be totally lost.

Oddly enough despite being 2.5 hours and over the first half of the first book, certain pivotal scenes felt very rushed. Major plot points involving the Duke Leto almost feel glossed over because there’s no time to reflect on the significance of what just happened or how it affects other characters before rushing on to the next part of the journey.

Lastly, there were a couple visual touches I found distracting. The body shield creating both blur and a color change upon contact took me out of the combat sequences and made it difficult to follow the fight. Also as a guy who appreciates a healthy amount of blood in his action movies to compliment the violence on screen, Dune’s combat felt very sterile to the point of bordering on PG end of the PG-13 spectrum instead of R. A must see in theaters for those who enjoyed the novel. I’d encourage fans of plot driven sci fi to also see in theaters, or sci fans interested in seeing a novel put to screen that had a huge historical impact on the genre. If you’re a fan of action heavy sci fi, you may find yourself bored. The kid next to me fell asleep and started snoring despite being in the front row of an 8:30 showing. Please go see in theaters not HBO Max so we can get a sequel!!

It's fantastic to see a new high concept Sci-Fi movie hit the big screen, it's been too long since we have seen something so epic and thought provoking as this. The visuals and actors are incredible with loads of atmospheric scenes and a mesmerising soundtrack. Villeneuve has made an incredible Dune movie here with an obvious love for much of the source material by Frank Herbert. My only problem with the movie is that I think it needed more of the runtime devoted to universe building and subtle exposition from characters. I understand Denis respects the audiences intelligence to work out what is happening, I don't expect the movie to explain everything to me but I think there wasn't enough about the lore and the politics of the galaxy in the year 10191. This new Dune is much better than David Lynch's Dune in many ways but I think Lynch's version fleshed out the Dune universe better. In the entire runtime of Dune 2021 there was no mention of the spacing guild, navigators, travelling without moving, mentats, why no computers and no insight into the larger universe at play. The most disappointing omission for me was the lack of the Emperor of the Known Universe, he is hugely important to the plot but you never see him back on planet Caitain you just hear his dignitaries say his name and title on planet Caladan. Denis Villeneuve's Dune is the new definitive Dune movie and will be even more definitive when part two is out but I think it could have been even better. A few more discussions between characters and more meetings around the table like in the book would have been very welcome. Herbert wanted to entertain his readers but also clearly wanted to teach the reader about the universe he had created but Villeneuve is obviously a director who cares more about character and spectacle which is fine by me as it's still an awesome movie to behold. Almost perfect. Expand

Absolutely refreshing after years of watching the half-assed CG effects in Star Wars and Marvel movies that still feel like I’m watching a semi-cartoon. There is so much more I could say about the genius of this film - the acting, the script, the screenplay, the soundtrack (!!!) - but I’m going to leave it at that. Expand
