Just when I said "here it comes, I'm so, sooo ready for the next two hours of-" and it ended. I was awestruck. I sat through two hours of (essentially) the best exposition ever, plus a cataclysm. It was like watching the first two and a half steps of an epic: Exposition. Inciting Incident. Rising Action. Then having to stand up and stretch my legs for an intermission. It's going to be a long and painful intermission because I was ALREADY PREPARED to sit through another two to three hours of this film, and now I will have to bide my time. It will be worth it. If this movie was good (and it was GOOD), then the next is going to blow our minds. Stunning visuals, and so faithful to the FEELING of the book that I even experienced something I NEVER thought I would experience again: The initial "oh, that's kind of silly and far-fetched" to the "I'm religiously invested in this world and its rules. Bless the Maker and His water...". No one can ever deny that Denis Villeneuve is a true-and-true fan of the novel. He was able to recreate even the most intimate nuances that all of us experienced differently when reading the book. Such an experience. See it in theatres, even if you don't end up loving or liking the film, you won't regret it. Expand

Let me just tell you about some of the amazing things about this movie; first of all the sound is great, you need to watch this in a movie theater. The acting was great, I didn't see a single bad performance. Not only is this a beautiful movie with stunning cinematography, I actually think this is THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN (I'm not even exaggerating). These are just some of the many great things about the movie. Also one of my big complaints about the old David Lynch version of Dune was that it didn’t actually take the time to explain the important things, and didn't make us see this beautiful world that I knew Dune had. Well this new version of Dune does everything right that 1984 version did wrong. Expand

This one is a little bit bombastic with the blaring music and overwhelming sets. I think the story and the characters get lost in the greater scope of the world-building. I was expecting to be wowed, but instead I was mildly satisfied. Expand

By it's nature it's an incomplete story but it really feels like there's something missing to make a satisfying standalone experience.
That being said, it's another gorgeous film by Villeneuve. The cinematography and locations are great, the art direction & costume designs are top notch, and the soundtrack is one of Hans Zimmer's best works. It's probably the closest someone can get to a faithful adaptation of the first chunk of the book without being 4 hours long, which I would definitely watch multiple times.

First the good - There's basically 2 ways to approach a film with source material such as this. Either make it "fun-size", and palatable with people who purely want escapism (i.e the mass public), or try and evoke the nuance and political complexity interwoven throughout Herbert's novel. I'm frankly really glad they went the latter avenue, and overall I think the info overload actually pays off well. The acting, special effects, cinematography, aesthetic, costumes, and overall feel was stellar. It felt epic without being pretentious, and I would imagine seeing it on the big screen (yes, I'm one of the toadies who streamed it) would only add to the awe. However, much of the dialogue and the pacing were rather bland. A lot of pure exposition. As I said, all the actors did a really good job (with the possible exception of Javier Bardem, who's accent was jarringly distracting to me. Why does he sound so drastically different to the rest of the Fremen? I half-expected him to say "fine, we'll settle it with my lucky quarter" at any moment) but with an oft one-dimensional script, there's only so much that can be done.

And lastly, my real chagrin. The pacing. I don't know if the original novel frankly has enough sourced material to warrant two long movies. This movie is 2 1/2 hours. They could so easily trim 30 minutes. A major pet-peeve of mine in any movie is when they have a bunch of slowed-down walking scenes, void of any dialogue. There's a TON of said shots riddled throughout the film, that only makes the rather slowed-pace only feel uncomfortably more so. And they could have been clearer. Hard to tell who's who and even what faction is what sometimes.

I did enjoy it. I'm super excited for part 2. I don't however, recommend it to people who are on the fence about seeing it, or aren't a sci-fi/Dune fan. I just wish that when thinking about it a day later, I wasn't focused on questionable approaches or confoundment with certain elements. The Worms are worth the price of admission.

But I don't think I expected what we got. There is an emotional intensity and just, humanity, to this version that I've never seen in Dune before. It's not even really there in the book.

I first read Dune as a child, and again when I was a bit older. I've read the second and third books twice as well. I've started the fourth twice, and left off of it twice, it failing to hold my interest, but that is a discussion for another time.

I love the 1984 David Lynch film. Some people do, others don't. It's very much a product of its time: a flashy spectacle with a flair for costume design and an excellent soundtrack. My memories of the later Sci-Fi channel miniseries are faint, but I can say it never captured my imagination the way the first film and the Westwood strategy games did. To say nothing of my imaginings of the lost 70s-era Jodorowsky adaptation.

A friend asked me if Dune: Part One made up for the Jodorowsky version never coming out. I told him I didn't think I was qualified to say. But this film brought the story of Paul Atreides to vivid, surreal life in a way I never anticipated.

The brilliant cast, excellent mechanical design, and soundtrack with incredible presence and intensity come together almost flawlessly. As a simple filmgoer, I cannot reasonably say how this film might have been improved further.

I appreciate the small details as well, like styling Chalemet's hair to resemble Kyle MacLachlan's in the '84 film.

Every so often a production with the budget of Dune: Part One turns out to be very good, and I reminded that filmmaking as a medium has not quite yet been subsumed by moneygrubbing hacks in suits who bow, scrape and grovel at the altar of Mickey Mouse.

I learned only just prior to its release that this flm was to be part one of a series, and went into production with full knowledge that it might not get a continuation. I can only hope its quality and success means that it will.

Empfehlenswert!

It's one part Star Wars, one part Game of Thrones, yet it succeeds here in not feeling derivative of either. There's enough intrigue to keep you guessing, and enough spectacle to keep you watching.

The art direction and narrative are both great at conveying the unique setting and world of the series without relying overtly on exposition. The world is conveyed well through form and function, allowing the world of the film to feel natural, as it does in the books. It is sometimes difficult to see that the film is setting up for a sequel, however that's simply a necessity here given that this film is based upon a book, which itself is part of a series. Splitting the film, while sometimes an unpopular choice, is entirely necessary if you're going to attempt to display the full scope of Herbert's world.

The film is well cast, and well directed. The art design and CGI really nail the unique nature of Dune's world, one of Neo-Feudalism, mixing this space age civilisation with a medieval twist. While it ends with a lot left to give, it holds the promise of a bright future for this series that makes this film more than worth the watch and great first entry into (hopefully) a great series.

Dune is said to be one of the greatest films film that never made, when Alejandro Jodorowsky tried to make it. There is a documentary as well, it's a worth watch to see how well he was prepared for the movie. Another attempt was by David Lynch which was made into a film in 1984, which is said to be a cult movie. Even Lynch was hugely disappointed by the final product. When Villeneuve announced the film, the whole world of film lovers were eagerly waiting. Happily, he did not disappoint us. Part 1 is amazing. If you involve into the movie, it gives a satisfaction and don't let you down.

It is planned to be a two parts film, and the audience are waiting for the sequel. Let's wait and see for the conclusion.

Yeah I know I’m very late to the party with this review, don’t blame me it’s been a mental year. I’ve finally seen the visually spectacular Dune and much like the fanbase for the original cult classic this new remake is sure to bring in a whole new bunch of sci-fi fans.

Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) is the son of a noble family and must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. Also starring Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgård and Josh Brolin. A truly brilliant line up of talent altogether and Denis Villeneuve was the perfect director to take on a new Dune adaptation. Throw in a completely full on Hans Zimmer score and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a modern day epic. A highly immersive cinematic experience with incredible attention to detail. Everything is allowing you to fall into this new world and lose yourself in the magic of cinema. Epic really is the word to describe it, I’ve also seen the phrase space opera to describe Dune and I’d agree that’s an accurate description. I love the star studded cast but particularly Timothée Chalamet leading the movie, he gives an excellent performance. As a Zimmer fan it’s no surprise I loved the awe-inspiring score for Dune. The visuals, the music and the entire cast all perfectly complement each other to create an epic sci-fi movie.

I haven’t seen the original or read the book so I’ve no idea where the story is going next but I am excited for Dune Part II and together I’d expect Part I and II to make a terrific double bill. As amazing as Dune is it’s still only half a movie and I do feel frustrated that it’s split into two separate movies with likely a two year gap in between them. It won’t become clear until Part II as to whether separating it into two films will be worth it though in most cases splitting a story in two only results in a dragged out movie with a wrecked story arc, looking at you Hobbit trilogy. I can’t say everyone will feel the same but for me the feeling of all set up for a good portion of Dune Part I was annoying and I can only hope Part II is worth it.

It can be a daunting task to take on a big budget sci-fi movie and bring some originality to the genre especially when there’s an endless parade of Star Wars movies and TV shows to complete with. Villeneuve has shown us what he is capable of with Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. With Dune, he has not only created one of the best looking sci-fi movies in years but made something that feels new in a world of unoriginality. Recommended for all the sci-fi fans.

Maybe he wanted to make a trilogy or maybe even 5 movies but the budget is so big that he felt he had to make two films in order to assure that he could complete the story.

This film is visually and technically astonishing, but like i said before it’s so rushed and everything is happening so fast that you can’t take a minute to actually focus on what’s going on. If you’re not a fan of the Duniverse or have read the books you will definitely be lost. The screenplay and writing is good but for a film based on a book series with so much material the story is kind of lacking.

The film itself truly is a visual wonder, the costumes, art direction, makeup and visual effects are top tier and will definitely be a strong contender for a few Oscars. That being said, I’m really looking forward to seeing this new Dune franchise expanded into more movies and TV shows, with the creative talent behind it, this could rival that of bigger franchises such as Star Wars and other sci-fi properties.

p.s. Timothée Chalamet is extremely overrated

Before watching this movie i expected it to be slow paced, patient and visually stunning movie coming from Denis Villeneuve and mostly i was right and it it a good movie but did it live up to the hype for me...no

The first half of this movie was a slow burn, took its time with the story-telling, character introductions and mainly focused on world building complimented with amazing visual shots from Denis Villeneuve and although i enjoyed some aspects of the world building, great visual effects and scenery and the mystery of the story and Paul Atreides' involvement in it, the first half of Dune was mostly uninteresting to me especially with mostly average characters(more on that later).

The second half however picks up with the pace and delivers the sci-fi epic that i wanted with good action, amazing set pieces and i know i've said it before and i'm gonna say it again THIS MOVIE WAS VISUALLY AMAZING and directed well but most importantly the story and pacing started to gel together well too along with the mystery aspect of the movie kept me kinda hooked but still had problems with paper thin character arcs and the when the movie is getting really interesting it ends abruptly.

Now on the characters, besides Timothée Chalamet's character Paul Atreides who is the protagonist of the movie, i didn't feel an emotional connection with most of the characters most of them didn't have interesting arcs if any at all and it's not because of the acting, i mean look at the cast of this movie it's impressive and there wasn't any poor acting performance in sight all the actors gave their all in their roles but that can only carry you so far if i didn't care for the characters.

The most interesting characters were Duke Leto Atreides, Lady Jessica Atreides and Duncan Idaho(Jason Mamoa was the only one who looked like he was having fun in the movie and was badass too) and was the second best character of the movie.Zendaya wasn't really in this movie as i thought she would be even though it's implied heavily she is integral to the story but that payoff doesn't really happen. The villains were your typical bad guy villain with average motivations although Stellan Skarsgård as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen was creepy.

For the protagonist Timothée Chalamet gives a good performance as usual. Paul Atreides' story and journey was your typical hero journey although it's uniquely told as his arc is full of mystery as doesn't really get resolved by the end of the movie but i liked the dynamic between him and his parents especially the beginning with his father which was a cool moment. So with Dune being a slow burn, patient movie and average characters it relies heavy on the plot and story-telling for it to be a success and for me personally i feel it wasn't enough to make up for the flaws i had with Dune like the heavy slow paced and kinda boring first half, not feeling invested with most of the characters and some of the world around Dune feeling mostly empty for a sci-fi but i did enjoy the second half more, the action was well directed, the acting performances were really good and the movie is a visual joy to experience thanks to Denis Villeneuve's directing complimented with good cinematography and some aspects of the score(kinda annoyed me at times but it was mostly good).

I think it's a good movie but it's just not for me at the end of the day. I respect the unique take it has especially with the movie being released in Hollywood nowadays so i think this movie is necessary but personally might not watch it again.

Beautiful film in all, to be seen absolutely, directed by Villeneuve director remember of masterpiece films such as Blade Runner 2049, Prisoners, Arrival. The cast is really excellent, spot on everything, excellent direction, does not take your eyes off the screen for a single moment, not tired and not boring (indeed passionate and a lot) as the first DUNE was. The film that reflects throughout the novel, we hope that there are other sequels since it is not finished and is for now the first, I think of at least a trilogy. I recommend to all fans of science fiction and not, to see it as it is not disappointed but rather dazzled by its beauty.

They lack a bit of depth, which is probably because they are portrayed in a real way, no unnecessary jokes or quips used. Overall a great movie, worth experiencing in cinema just for the soundtrack alone. Expand

That being corny, action, sci-fi flick with Patrick Stewart behind it. Then I found that Denis Villeneuve was directing it. Being the Director of such hit Films as Dune inspires with a cinematic flare and style which, while in the same wheel house as Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival I knew I would be in for a treat.

This does an amazing job of creating a distinct style both visually and story wise to make it feel like an entirely separate project from all of Villeneuve's previous works. The story of Dune: part one is exactly as it is in the book, hits a lot of classic sci-fi troupes for better or worse. The real star of this film is the pacing at which the story unfolds. Choosing to skip a lot of the tedious story telling aspects from the previous film Dune portrays the fall of House Atreides as a spectacularly corrupt and horrific affair. While not a perfect telling, Dune definitely a very unique and compelling one about religious fanaticism, betrayal, and prophecy. With all the quiet mystic and world building of his previous films Villeneuve masterfully displays why he is one of the most celebrated directors of a generation! My only real disappointment is that I will have to this on 2 parts.

I was intrigued by the film and decided to see it in the cinema. I am so very glad I did. The soundtrack by Hans Zimmer really gave this movie a kick. But apart from the music, the film didn't lag behind visually and it is definitely a nice spectacle full of sandy locations that I really enjoyed. So the film is nice to look at and nice to listen to when the music is playing. But what about the plot itself in the finale? This is where it's just beginning and I'm slowly not sure what I should start with first. I'll be honest. As much as I enjoyed the film and was interested in what was happening on screen, it just had some minor cracks in the finale and a few things I didn't understand. I thought that the fault was on my part and that I simply wasn't giving the film enough attention, and ultimately I still think that now. On the plus side, a couple of friends told me after it was over that they didn't really know what was going on in the story, which is a bit odd after all. I'm not saying the movie is complicated or that it throws too much information at you in too short a time. On the contrary. New Dune is 2 and a half hours long, and it's only the first episode. There's plenty of space, but there are just a few families, a few names, and I just don't know how it happened, but I got lost here and there. After it was over, I spent the following days reading information on the internet and read the plot a few more times and I'm pretty clear. I'm even more sorry that I didn't understand some things during the movie, because the story of the new Dune is great in my opinion, although it's kind of one big intro that prepares you for the next installment. I am, however, looking forward to the next installment, and incredibly so. Both to find out what happens next, but more importantly I hope it will be another excellent cinema experience like this one was. I understand director Denis Villeneuve wanting to throw this film into theaters. While it will also be an experience at home with some better TV on salted audio, it still won't be the same feeling as sitting in a cinema with a proper screen in front of you with proper sound. For me, a great film that I recommend. Expand

For me it couples absolute brilliance and passion for big screen film making with head shaking missteps in story, character and some areas of weightless dialogue and exposition. An absolutely amazing, boundary crushing score, yet abused in its over saturation. I've seen the film 3 times so far. Imax+Amos. Imax+??? and HBOMax. DO NOT SEE THIS ON YOUR TV FOR FIRST TIME. It was absolutely made to be seen, dare I say, ONLY on the big screen, with the best sound system.

I'm a lifelong sci-fi fan (thanks, Dad) in my 6th decade. The Dune books have been read dozens of times. Will a fan's expectations ever be met? Probably not. But this movie is close. I love all of Villeneuve's films and style of revealing a story vs telling one. The efforts and commitment made by him and his production crew is always greatly admired. I think Warner's hesitation to give him the green light for the entire book at once is a gigantic miscalculation and has had an effect on why part 1 feels the way it does. Maybe once after some reflection with lessons learned, part 2 will bring it all together and be the masterpiece I know we all want it to be -- hopefully releasing it sooner than later.

Every character has a reason and feels fleshed out. The plot is really easy to follow ( I haven't read the books or watch the old film) but it never holds your hand or treats you like you're dumb and need everything to be explained through some cheesy dialogue. IT SHOWS. It open your senses with marvelous visuals and sound, and let the story go through. So please watch it in cinemas, it deserves it.
I wish the combat scenes were a bit more visceral but I can see why villenueve was a bit cautious in this subject, and it feels justified.

I'm crossing my fingers that in the world we live today a movie like this can thrive and we get to see the second part.

People claiming that it was hard to follow simply cannot piece together the masterfully subtle clues and storytelling. People claiming that characters were soulless must have watched with their eyes closed and missed the fantastic and intense acting. Someone claimed the technology didn't make sense, for example asking "why do they have spaceships yet use swords instead of guns?" The movie clearly demonstrates (multiple times) that you cannot simply use guns against the personal forcefields because they intercept high-velocity projectiles. Some of these troll reviewers must love being spoon-fed exposition because they are clearly not capable of observing and interpreting storytelling without frequent explanations about everything in direct terms so they don't get lost. Yes, Dune has multiple books of complex lore that could not be fit into five movies, much less two. But, the movie presents enough of it in a way that is understandable and not overwhelming. You just have to pay attention, observe, and use deductive reasoning to figure some things out. It really isn't hard. Some of these reviewers are absurdly dense. Anyone who has read the Dune series could not have asked for a better film adaptation, especially given the modern climate of CGI-clickbait movies with ham-fisted or nonsensical storytelling full of plot holes. However even in condensing Dune into a two part film, Denis Villeneuve has packed in an immense amount of detail that will finally satisfy longtime fans of the series. Pretty much casting was near perfect. The weapons, costumes, vehicles, and architecture are in a class of their own, truly presenting a partially familiar, partially alien, and wholly immersive vision of the 102nd Century AG. The sound design and cinematography are also top notch, to the point where I really do recommend you see it for the first time in a theatre. Dune 2021 absolutely deserves the comparisons to the Lord of the Rings films in that it brings an exalted work of fiction to life in a way that will amaze newcomers to the series as much as longtime fans. Truly Denis has done something amazing here, and I hope immensely that he gets to realize his vision in adapting Frank Herbert’s work at least through Dune Messiah. This really is about as good as science fiction can get. Expand

Dune may suffer from a slow start, but as the film progresses and its narrative develops it becomes a welcome addition to the seemingly dead genre of Long, narrative driven Blockbusters.

At the start the characters can come across as a little flat, and there is a lot of terminology and lore to learn relatively quickly, but the payoffs for all this buildup are worth the initial grind. The universe of the film itself is intriguing, and its sense of atmosphere and tension grows more and more investing as the story progresses.

Judging as a film fan rather than one determining accuracies or lack thereof from Herbert's universe. ----

2.5 feels long with a slow burn like this, but justified considering the massive undertaking that Dune is. Rushing through the material any faster would undoubtably push this film into sci-fi action camp.
Villeneuve captures both intimate moments and armada-scale scenes while showing immense care / craft for both, while holding our interest as we ping pong between the two. Paul's character starts in a juvenile depiction, and we are brought up to speed alongside him throughout the film. We experience his world and it's sudden shifts in parallel which helps a viewer stomach the leaps we must take. This style also helps us justify where his character and the film ends.

The movie is well acted, but the sparse dialogue, furrowed brows and 1000 yard stares as the main dish is a tight box to play in. Yet everyone seems to deliver quite well. Chalamet is great and certainly delivers on carrying the film.

The sound design is incredible, see it in a theater or invest in sound (you won't regret it.) The cinematography and CG are beautiful. Blade Runner serves as a fairly stellar depiction of a some-what distant future, where Dune mixes in more mysticism and fantasy and takes us far off-world without being hokey (which is a difficult thing to do). It's difficult not to see a lot of semblance to Star Wars baked in between the literal war in the stars we're watching, Oscar Isaac, sand monsters, and the Annakin ora floating over Paul. If Star Wars was made strictly for adults, this would be an acceptable form (although a bit more graphic violence could help this movie deepen the seriousness of what we're seeing, but doesn't feel mandatory or missed here.)

The only disappointment of the film is realizing you've spent so much time simply to google "Dune 2 release date" considering the film feels half-way through (or less) of whatever it's trying to deliver. Looking forward to seeing where this goes.

Dune delivers. I grew up in the 80s reading the classics, Heinlein, Asimov, etc. Dune was one of my favorites, but at the time I was too young to process the politics and the humming back story that is hinted at by the characters. The other movies didn't do the book justice, this one did. Unlike a lot of modern movies the characters are likeable. Their situation difficult and their loyalty to each other admirable. This all comes through in this movie in a way that it didn't in the other movies. I'm re-reading the book now since I saw the movie.

The bottom line is, this is a really good sci-fi movie of a really good sci-fi book. I, like others, am glad I knew going in that is is part 1 of 2. Really though, some scenes are drawn out that didn't need to be and I would have preferred a 3 1/2 hour epic movie that didn't need a sequel and frankly I think it would have been better that way.

My complaint that knocks off a star or so: the ship designs and sets. The colors are OK and good to look at but the camera angles don't feel like you're moving. And the ships are just a big block that "hangs in the air much in the way that a brick doesn't". The book doesn't bother describing these things, but the movie should have. Seriously just jump on pinterest and type "starships" and you could find 100 talented artists who make their starships look cool and functional at the same time. The book can be forgiven for not taking this seriously since our imagination can fill these things in, but after Star Wars in 1977 showed that starships can be functional AND look cool, there is no excuse for just making giant blocky starships.

The book isn't very faithfully followed; if you read it you'll see why (some plot points haven't aged well), and its worth a read. A couple of characters are oversimplified and a couple of plot lines abandoned, but hey, when is the last time you read a book? Well now you have a reason since the movie ends half way through.

Anyway, this is a great film. A great sci-fi film. The acting is good to great and the action scenes are great. See it in the theater, it is worth it.

The cinematography, score, acting, and costume design is all top notch. The decision to change the opening from the novel to a battle sequence involving Fremen and Harkonnen followed by a introduction of Caladan does a better job of setting up what’s at stake and the complex political background. I still have concerns those who haven’t read the novel will be totally lost.

Oddly enough despite being 2.5 hours and over the first half of the first book, certain pivotal scenes felt very rushed. Major plot points involving the Duke Leto almost feel glossed over because there’s no time to reflect on the significance of what just happened or how it affects other characters before rushing on to the next part of the journey.

Lastly, there were a couple visual touches I found distracting. The body shield creating both blur and a color change upon contact took me out of the combat sequences and made it difficult to follow the fight. Also as a guy who appreciates a healthy amount of blood in his action movies to compliment the violence on screen, Dune’s combat felt very sterile to the point of bordering on PG end of the PG-13 spectrum instead of R. A must see in theaters for those who enjoyed the novel. I’d encourage fans of plot driven sci fi to also see in theaters, or sci fans interested in seeing a novel put to screen that had a huge historical impact on the genre. If you’re a fan of action heavy sci fi, you may find yourself bored. The kid next to me fell asleep and started snoring despite being in the front row of an 8:30 showing. Please go see in theaters not HBO Max so we can get a sequel!!

It's fantastic to see a new high concept Sci-Fi movie hit the big screen, it's been too long since we have seen something so epic and thought provoking as this. The visuals and actors are incredible with loads of atmospheric scenes and a mesmerising soundtrack. Villeneuve has made an incredible Dune movie here with an obvious love for much of the source material by Frank Herbert. My only problem with the movie is that I think it needed more of the runtime devoted to universe building and subtle exposition from characters. I understand Denis respects the audiences intelligence to work out what is happening, I don't expect the movie to explain everything to me but I think there wasn't enough about the lore and the politics of the galaxy in the year 10191. This new Dune is much better than David Lynch's Dune in many ways but I think Lynch's version fleshed out the Dune universe better. In the entire runtime of Dune 2021 there was no mention of the spacing guild, navigators, travelling without moving, mentats, why no computers and no insight into the larger universe at play. The most disappointing omission for me was the lack of the Emperor of the Known Universe, he is hugely important to the plot but you never see him back on planet Caitain you just hear his dignitaries say his name and title on planet Caladan. Denis Villeneuve's Dune is the new definitive Dune movie and will be even more definitive when part two is out but I think it could have been even better. A few more discussions between characters and more meetings around the table like in the book would have been very welcome. Herbert wanted to entertain his readers but also clearly wanted to teach the reader about the universe he had created but Villeneuve is obviously a director who cares more about character and spectacle which is fine by me as it's still an awesome movie to behold. Almost perfect. Expand

Absolutely refreshing after years of watching the half-assed CG effects in Star Wars and Marvel movies that still feel like I’m watching a semi-cartoon. There is so much more I could say about the genius of this film - the acting, the script, the screenplay, the soundtrack (!!!) - but I’m going to leave it at that. Expand

However, I am a huge fan of the director Denis Villeneuve and loved all the films he has made so far. The premise is "Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet's exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence, only those who can conquer their own fear will survive". So is this another hit by Denis or his first work I don't like?

Let's get the obvious out the way first, Dune (2021) is a visual spectacle! The cinematography by Greig Fraser is wonderful. Every shot in Dune is gorgeous whilst also capturing the beautiful and grand nature of the otherworld planets. The costume and set department also do a wonderful job of really making it seem futuristic. Especial praise to the design of all the spaceships as they are remarkably designed. The CGI is very good as well, thankfully. Hans Zimmer of Interstellar fame does the music score for this film and it is magnificent. He uses to great effect a choir and electrical instruments that elevates every scene in the film. Dune (2021) also features a stellar cast who all do a great job in their respective role even those with little screen time. My biggest praise has got to be for Stellan Skarsgård as the Baron who is just creepy and unsettling every time he is on-screen.

The story is also very intriguing and engaging. There is a political aspect throughout this series that gives a Game of Thrones vibe. There are alliances, secret agendas and backstabbing that keeps you glued to the screen. The movie also focuses a lot on world-building with the noble families, the "voice" power and the Fremen; a group of natives to the desert planet. All of this lore make the world of Dune feel more vibrant and unique similar to that of Lord of the Rings which managed to pull you in; Dune (2021) does the same. Denis does a great job in making all the politics and jargon stated, easy to understand for the audience. There are also a large variety of characters in the film and Denis does a phenomenal job in making it clear what their personality and agendas are. The main character, Paul Atreides played by Timothée Chalamet, has a clear character arc with the struggle of his power and him being next in line for House Atreides. Most of his story arc gets a clear resolution by the end of the film.

However, Dune (2021) is a part 1 that just covers half of the book and it shows. Most movies build up to an epic 3rd act but Dune (2021) just ends midway through the 2nd act. This ends up feeling very jarring, to say the least as it doesn't end on a high note. It is also incredibly slow-paced. Since a majority of the film is dedicated to just exposition and explanation of the world; it results in a lot of moments that feel dull and sometimes boring. Additionally, the fight scenes and action scenes are serviceable but could be improved. Apart from the fight scenes with Duncan (Jason Momoa) the others are choreographed blandly and shot awkwardly as well. Overall, Dune (2021) has a lot of love and effort put towards bringing the grand vision and scope of the novel to the big screen. Every frame in this film is eye-catching thanks to the cinematography, costumes and set design that had a lot of thought put towards it. Nevertheless, it is a very slow paced movie that might deter some people from enjoying it. Despite that, I thoroughly enjoyed Dune (2021) and it was no doubt one of the most memorable Sci-fi movies to come out. It would be a crime for this to not get a sequel!

When I heard DennisAfter the disappointment that was the 1984 film and the monstrosity that was the SyFy channels miniseries, I prayed to whatever god that would listen for someone to come again and give this franchise justice in film. When I heard Dennis Villeneuve was selected to direct a new movie, I believed my prayer might have been heard. When I actually saw the movie, I knew it was.

This new Dune movie is everything I believed the franchise could be as a motion picture. Villaneuve delivered, as I knew he would, with larger-than-life structures, the expansive wastes of Arrakis, the color and pageantry of the people, and the epic sense of a larger struggle at hand. Such influences were evident from his previous works like Arrival and Rlade Runner 2049, but he perfected them in this movie. The movie was also a good adaptation and covered nearly all the main and important parts from the book, while leaving itself some leeway to format the story to the pacing and style of a motion picture (something the 1984 film failed to do). If there were any flaws, it was in the performance of some of the characters and the somewhat lacking explanations of things for those who would not be familiar with the source material. The actor selected to play Paul could not have been more uninteresting, and I could not always tell if his reactions at times were very appropriate to the situation. This was not the case for most of the cast surrounding him, and I was definitely taken in by many of the performances from the star-studded cast (although as good an actor as he is, seeing a nicely shaved Jason Momoa will always be a hardship to endure in the future). Of course this is only part one to this project. I feel it is important to withhold complete judgement until the next installment can be compared, but for what we have, it is an excellent beginning. Needless to say, I can't wait for part two.

So, to fully appreciate the movie, it is strongly advised to read, or rather immerse oneself in the book beforehand. The movie does feel like it skims through a synopsis of the book, and despite being very slow paced, actually feels rushed, as some parts form the book were changed, shortened or deleted. However, the visuals, sticking close the original material and general from-a-fan-for-fans feel makes me not able to hate the movie. I hope part 2 will be at least as good, and that Denis will get the chance to film other parts, at least the first main sotryline (Dune-Messiah-Children). Expand

I can clearly understand that you also enjoy Dune, but may have not (like many of the general population) been too amped up over the 1984 version, which was frankly baffling, but had many excellent ideas that were just not capable of being put on a movie screen.. yet. Now that we have the CGI to create an utterly bland desert planet full of goofy outfits and giant worms here in the 21st century, you'd think we'd have also figured out that slow-motion effects should not be used to elongate every dreamlike sequence in a freaking film.

I enjoy this "take" of Dune, even if it is a bit generic, but that's kind of what you get when you are basically copy-pasting imagery described in the book. Granted they got a lot of it right except for the "hunter-killer" for some reason. Casting was great, aside from Momoa and Drax who probably didn't deserve the amount of screen time they both seemingly got. Newcomers all did well, but some of the others like Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman (lacking range or screentime), sort of seemed out of place as did Josh Brolin who must have not read the book's description of his character at all. Stellan Skarsgård didn't even bother to chew the scenery knowing his entire body outside of his face would be CGI anyway, so that was sort of disappointing. Oscar Isaac plays a pretty good father figure, but the beard didn't make him look only barely 20 years older than his own son unfortunately.

Overall I thought the fighting choreography kind of sucked, the battle hardened imperial forces looked like goobers and the "highly trained" Atreides guards didn't seem too tough either (with a few scenes having random women fighting alongside them). Good thing the director completely forgot to put in any gore or violence, otherwise I might've actually cared about these random extras who didn't put much of a fight for their very lives up against their old rivals- the Harkonnen.. since like forever.

I was one of the few that actually got pretty bored with "Bladerunner 2049" when it hit theaters, and ultimately left the showing after Jared Leto showed up to ruin the entire movie. Of course I finished it later and thought, "Wow, this Director sure knows how to make a pretty movie stretch far beyond a 45 minute plot." Unsurprisingly- 2049 also flopped at the box office for being an overly theatrical prima donna that was aping the original film to the point where they had to retcon the original film's storyline just to make the pseudo-sequel make some semblance of sense. Or maybe it was to explain Ford's cameo? Its hard to know for sure.

All-in-all, I think this version does the best job adapting SOME parts of the book, but visually it was quite bland. I think some of the costume designs looked better, but some of them also looked worse than the original David Lynch film. The Harkonnen weren't nearly as imposing or disgusting, the whole reasoning behind the ordeal was actually explained better in the original film, so that's pretty atrocious writing to be honest. I also wasn't a big fan of the constant flashbacks (flash forwards?) from the main character slowing down already kind of slower paced film. It didn't ever feel too long, but the end of "part one," if we get a part two that is, was definitely not a highlight for me. In fact, the final twenty minutes of the movie basically go nowhere, because all the tension is gone when they aren't being chased by an entire army or hunted by the Sardaukar. Some of the best moments were early on, with Lady Jessica, her relationship with her son, the "Gom Jabbar" scene, which was honestly very well done and helped illuminate why its so important to Paul as a character and for his development later on and the movie spent a bit more time building up (though unsuccessful) other side characters as well. I think the book is impossible to really adapt, though many have tried. Denis Villeneuve isn't a terrible director, but I personally am not a big fan of most of his films. The fact that he has tried to do more or less the impossible with Dune is very commendable though and I would at least like to see a part two, but lets hope it lands on a better note, preferably a little less bland and a little less long.

When Denis Villeneuve, one of my favourite contemporary directors, took the reigns of a new adaptation of it, and it finally got released recently, I knew it was time. The sci-fi story, without going into details and spoiler territory, is set in a possible future many 1000s of years from now and is centred around House Atreides, one of several great houses and the son of the duke, as they are tasked by the emperor to take charge of the desert planet Arrakis, where a crucial and rare mineral is extracted, in place of another house. Things don't go as planned when they get there. This is one of those rare occasions where I have read the source material and I was ecstatic to check out this film to see how that world is brought to the screen with the help of modern technology. To no surprise for me knowing Denis' previous filmography, the film is an audiovisual treat. I do hate the fact that I didn't have the luxury to check this out in cinemas, let alone IMAX. Still, watching it at home on my average Home Theater, I was enthralled by how the universe created by Frank Herbert was brought onto the screen in a sublime seamless fashion. Whether it is shots of landscapes, cityscapes, planets, massive futuristic vehicles, the sandworms, indoor spaces, all of it looked wonderful with top-notch CGI. The imagination at display from the source material was awe-inspiring and the love for it was shown in taking the time to let the visuals breathe instead of haphazardly throwing in stuff and rushing to the finish line. The word EPIC does get thrown around a lot but this is one of the few occasions where it aptly fits and then some.

Accompanying the visuals are the top-tier sound effects that can give you an eargasm and a fittingly strong score by Hans Zimmer. Sure, you do get the usual BUWAAAMS but on a whole, I enjoyed the uniqueness/freshness of Zimmer on this one from his norm. Kinda liked how it felt for Interstellar, although not as amazing. There are a lot of characters and the casting for many of them was really good. I loved Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto, he fits that persona so well and I so wish there was more of him. Rebecca Furgeson as Lady Jessica was awesome and had one of the best performances in the film. Stellan Skarsgard as the Baron Harkonnen was a stroke of genius, so imposing and effective with the accompanying visuals. Havier Bardem as Stilgar was friggin amazing and I can't wait to see more of him in Part Two. Timothee Chalamet as the protagonist Paul Atreides was another strong one although when compared to veteran actors, he did stumble here and there but also had some GREAT moments. Plenty of well-casted actors for characters from the book. Unfortunately, even with the 2 and a half hour runtime, characterization was weak. So many characters didn't have enough screentime to be fleshed out properly and some got completely shafted, for example, Piter de Vries. Some story beats also suffered. Still, some of the writing was commendable that even with a lot of material to adapt, most of it went through quite well even if I was wishing they made the movie a full 3 hours long. The omissions made and sacrifices for the dialogue wouldn't have been an issue then. Now, it is not apparent from the promotional material but this is Part One of the experience that roughly covers 55% of the book, so keep that in mind as the film just sorta ends without any satisfying conclusion. I'm so glad that Part Two has been announced, so now we wait for that... it's gonna be excruciating. Overall, despite some issues, I loved it. It's a faithful adaptation from someone who genuinely cared for it. A grand-scale epic serious sci-fi adventure that you don't really get anymore. It's probably the best audiovisual treat I've gotten since Denis Villeneuve's last sci-fi outing i.e Blade Runner 2049 (absolutely love that film). Just goes to show how modern visual effects can be implemented in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing. Whether you've read the book or are new to this world, I'd highly recommend checking it out. And if I were to rate it, I'd give it an 8/10.

“Desert power!”

Long ago…in a galaxy far far away…before ‘Star Wars’, ‘Mad Max’, ‘Tremors’, and ‘Game of Thrones’.... there was only ‘Dune’.

A story and world that gave birth to fantasy and Sci-Fi as we know it, as a main influence and many more for years to come. Although, I haven’t seen the other adaptions of ‘Dune’ with either of the Lynch or TV version. So, this is my first introduction to the world and characters, and something that was once considered unadaptable has become a reality all thanks to Denis Villeneuve vision. And now I'm interested in this world and the movie leaves you wanting more.

'Dune (2021)' - man what a trip. Incredible in every sense. Just like ‘Blade Runner 2049’, nobody does art house blockbusters better than Denis Villeneuve. A Sci-Fi tale of philosophical richness that's loaded with grand spectacle. While I didn't see it in IMAX, but that didn't take away from the scope of it all.

No joke, but this could be our new Lord of the Rings and Star Wars.

The acting here is strong:

Timothée Chalamet has impressed me ever since his breakout role in ‘Call Me by Your Name’, so it’s not surprising that he did an excellent job in this movie as the character of Paul, the young man in royalty whose destiny can lead him in either direction. Not bad for a kid who started off showing off his X-Box controllers on YouTube. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, type into YouTube “ModdedController360” and you’ll see.

Oscar Isaac plays The Duke, the father of Paul, and Oscar Isaac has yet to deliver a terrible performance. There's one scene between him and Chalamet that was one of the most moving things I've seen in a Sci-Fi movie since...well, 'Arrival' and 'Blade Runner 2049'.

Rebecca Ferguson plays Lady Jessica Atreides, who is easily the heart of the movie, and it might be my favourite performance from her.

Jason Momoa plays Duncan, the ultimate Chad, who’s a chill guy but is an absolute demon when it comes to fighting. Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, a cool but serious man who loyal to those close to him. Stellan Skarsgård scenes as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, the bloated and slimy creature with a hunger for power and chaos, which also pays a wonderful homage to Marlon Brando’s Colonel Walter E. Kurtz in ‘Apocalypse Now’, through the visuals in every scene he’s in. Also, despite the small screen time he had, but Dave Bautista has proved that he has more range as an actor than most wrestlers who turned to acting.

Zendaya isn't in the movie that much, but I know she will be in the next movie. Her little scenes were very mystical. She appears mostly in visions from Chalamet’s Paul, which people have best described those “visions” as the most expensive perfume advert ever.

In terms of the visual effects and the practical work, it’s a piece of art. It helps create a sense of scope that made everything feel so big, so real and so engaging to watch. I can say all of it looked pitch perfect. But also using real locations for open spaces and made certain bits of environment like heat from the actual desert, harsh winds, soggy rainy, grass, and the breath-taking landscapes seem familiar to us in this “alien world”.

The score, make-up, costumes, production design, cinematography, editing, sound, and direction were all top notches.

However, the movie does feel like a part 1 and for some people the movie feels incomplete, story wise. But then again, if it leaves you wanting more and we now know we are getting a part 2 to this story, this issue will expire when the second one comes around.

RELEASE THE SAND KRAKEN! Wait, that's not the right movie. Anyway, long-awaited and overdue, this weekend we have a review of the movie, Dune. Anyway, long-awaited and overdue, this weekend we have a review of the movie, Dune. A second adaptation of Frank Herbert's science fiction novel, that tells the story of a young man charged with leading before he's ready. The synopsis of Dune as provided by Warner Bros. Goes something like this: "Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet's exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence-a commodity capable of unlocking humanity's greatest potential-only those who can conquer their fear will survive." I know that description has you on the edge of your seat! Let's see how this blockbuster turned out.

I'll be blunt, but it's not to discourage anyone from seeing this movie. The movie is a bit boring and slow. It's just the honest truth; and, quite frankly, parts of this movie feel literally stolen from the Dune (1984). Obviously, it's images and ideas are adapted from the book, but my gosh, you can be a bit more creative with today's technology. Nevertheless, I got pretty sleepy during this movie. At times, I felt like I was re-watching the same sandy scene over and over again. I realize that this is just the opening act for what will probably be a series or trilogy but some parts are a snooze fest. Also, do we really want to see another teen-become-leader film? My answer is yes but give me more, darling! I'll admit that some parts of this movie are super intense, weird, and very pretty to look at. While I understand that there was a lot of set up to cram into this movie, I think it could've been shortened so that it felt more impactful. At times, particularly near the end, it seemed the weight of the moment was lost in the lack of urgency.

Nevertheless, the cast of this Dune is absolutely big time. You think about how big the set design, costumes, special effects are and then you're like Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, Javier Bardem and others fill out the cast. Wowza! And yet, I feel like we didn't get the most out of each actor, except maybe Jason Mamoa. You, sir, are a G. Again, it's like the rich only get richer. You'll understand if the movie is nominated for Oscars for set design, costume design, special effects, etc. The budget of this film at a mere $165,000,000 pales in comparison to the production actually displayed. You have to think Avatar scale but much sandier. I could only imagine the box office hype and big numbers this movie would make sans pandemic. There are set scenes that are just breathtaking, individual acting moments that are worthwhile. One caveat is that that creepy fat bad guy was lacking creativity.

Very long story short, the production and scale of Dune alone makes this movie worth watching. Yes, the movie is too long but do we ever complain about length with Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, or MCU films? No, I guess not, especially if you are prepared to live in a theater for 2-plus hours. Dune has it's faults but overall is a crisp, beautiful, creepy and updated world to dive into with a big box of popcorn for HBO Max, but just a bowl if you're considering going to the theaters. Even if, it is just to get to the sequel to see how the story progresses.
