Really a truly incredible film and baseline for hopefully a long line of Dune movies. The scenery and acting is a perfect fit for this oddessy of a story.

So excited to see part 2 and what else this universe has to offer.

Old timer here. Dune 2021 is Dune 1984 plus a ton of production design. That’s it. I found it to be flat and drawn out, with weaker performances. Whatever. If you like it, great. But it’s no Second Coming.

'Dune' is a gorgeous and massive film that is engaging and epic. The cast is compelling and the score is vibrant throughout. All being said, I really enjoyed my experience watching this film, but by the end of it, I felt empty due to a weak plot that really went nowhere, with barely any character growth or deep insight into the politics of this world. I felt little connection to many of the characters and many interesting ideas are brought forward, however, nothing felt explored deep enough. However, this is still a film that was definitely engaging and enjoyable which has me interested in a second part for sure.… Expand

I'm not much of a fan of eyebrows guy, and his scenes are as flat as expected. But even Javier Badem has a wooden moment in Dune. Apart from those two irritations, this film is flawless. From a die hard sci-fi fan.

There were a few scenes from the book I wish had been included, but obviously the 1/2-book was already a 3-hour movie. The only concerns I have are whether those lost souls who have NOT read the books will fully understand elements of the story. That was always the danger of trying to turn Frank Herbert's Dune into a movie ... how to capture the universe he built into a movie. But the grand scope, stunning visuals, and great performances all-around earned this movie another watch in a few days -- this time on IMAX!… Expand

They take control of Dune, the duke is killed, and Paul and his mother flee into the desert and meet the freman. That's it. The movie needed to be longer and include more plot. Director/Screenwriter Denis Villenueve (“Blade Runner 2049,” “Arrival”) is a perfect fit for a story like “Dune.” Villeneuve has consistently crafted films that are captivatingly immersive cinematic experiences, sometimes short on story butDirector/Screenwriter Denis Villenueve (“Blade Runner 2049,” “Arrival”) is a perfect fit for a story like “Dune.” Villeneuve has consistently crafted films that are captivatingly immersive cinematic experiences, sometimes short on story but always visually spectacular. This “Dune” offers truly breathtaking visuals. In fact, it’s the best reason currently available for actually heading out to the movies. Films like this that can be best experienced only in a dark room with a huge screen, lightly populated with socially-distanced strangers who have turned off their cell phones (I’m looking at you, Row G).

Villenueve, along with co-writers Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts, has created a mesmerizing world for the moviegoer to inhabit. House Atriedes, long-time rulers of Caladan (a world filled with rainy days, fog and lush beauty – think Seattle, but a planet) is ordered by the Emperor to take control of Arrakis (known as “Dune”), a barren wasteland of strategic importance because of the hallucinogenic “spice” harvested there. (Spice is essential to interstellar travel, life extension and a variety of medical uses, all of which make it the most valuable substance in the world.) Turns out, House Harkonnen, previous ruler of the planet, isn’t thrilled to give up this lucrative enterprise. Treachery abounds. The leader of House Atriedes is murdered. The heir, Paul Atriedes, barely escapes, but is abandoned to wander in the desert, just in case the messianic overtones were too subtle.

Although this film runs over 2 ½ hours, it covers only the first half of Frank Herbert’s original novel by the same name. Even at this length, creating a coherent narrative is a major achievement. In contrast, in the 1970s Chilean surrealist Alejandro Jadorowsky created story boards for an epic film version of “Dune” with a running time of over ten hours. Astonishingly, Hollywood wasn’t interested. It would have starred an amazing collection of characters including Orson Welles, Salvador Dali, Mick Jagger, David Carradine, Herve Villachaize (the diminutive Tattoo on “Fantasy Island”) and Gloria Swanson. The lead would have been Jadorowsky’s twelve-year-old son. (If you’re interested, watch the 2013 documentary “Jadorowsky’s Dune.”)

Villenueve’s script has stripped away the pretentious overtones and general bloviating of Frank Herbert’s novel. The original novel is a piece of work, in every possible sense. Running to more than 550 pages, it was originally serialized in “Analog” magazine before being published by the little-known Chilton Books (a publishing house best known for its car repair manuals). Herbert himself spent time in a socialist commune in Washington state as a child. He was also a distant relative of Joseph McCarthy and admired his relation’s goals if not his methods. To suggest that his views are “eclectic” is to engage in serious understatement.

All this means that Villeneuve had to effectively navigate a dizzying range of topics that include ecology, psychedelic drugs, religion (featuring the Bene Gesserit – think extremely badass space-traveling nuns), authoritarianism and actual human emotion. He succeeds for many reasons. First, rather than spouting philosophy, he focuses on building a big, far-reaching spectacle that literally encompasses a universe. Second, he has an impeccable eye for casting. In this case, he’s selected Timothee Chalamet (“Little Women,” “Call Me By Your Name”) as the messianic son Paul Atriedes, Rebecca Ferguson (“Mission Impossible” series, “The Greatest Showman”) as his Bene Gesserit mother, Oscar Isaac (“Ex Machina,” “The Card Counter”) as leader of the Atriedes clan and a supporting cast that includes Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgard, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem and Zendaya. All inhabit their roles perfectly. Finally, Villenueve understands that big ideas can arise and be considered without the need for mind-numbing exposition (that’s right, Mr. Herbert) or tidy resolution.

“Dune” has admirers from a surprisingly broad array of political perspectives, from Stephen Colbert to white supremacists attracted to the idea of a white messiah figure. Since its publication in 1965, Herbert’s weirdly compelling world has offered a welcome respite from the real. It offers a similarly welcome, thought-provoking diversion today.… Expand

I will say that this movie is a "special snowflake" or "hidden gem" if you will, because it focuses on heavy dream/intuition, as Paul is someone who has insights and hunches that frequently turn out to be correct. You're literally watching someone tapping into the unconscious things of life lol
Other than that, people can find the action quite enjoyable and thrilling.

Many rate it lower and I think for that reason is because they don't fully understand the main characters because they find intuition unappealing to lead in a movie.… Expand

Stellan Skarsgard is imposing as Baron Harkonnen and he eats up the screen time he has. Can't wait to see more of him in Chapter Two! All the other parts - Duke Leto, Duncan Idaho, Paul, Lady Jessica, Stilgar.. nearly everyone was perfect in their role. I don't do this often but this movie is a 10 for me. You can watch it, feel it, taste it. You get the sensation you are there, among the characters in this harsh, quasi-medieval, space-faring universe of political intrigue. What a rush!… Expand

Dune is the movie spectacle of the year. This movie is not for everyone, but I believe that if you're excited for this film and you do some research (not that you need it, but it can help to understand better and to sumerge in this world inDune is the movie spectacle of the year. The special effects are incredible as well as the sound and the score. In the end, Dune is almost a perfect movie, with smart storytelling that is not easy, but once decoded, is a wonder.… Expand

When it was announced that Denis Villeneuve would direct the sequel to Blade Runner, there was a lot of noise. Noise that I ignored.

Even at the time I said he was too good to let Blade Runner 2049 fail, and regardless of its box office numbers, the truth is that he delivered a great film.

Therefore, when it was also announced that he would direct a new adaptation of Dune, I didn't doubt him at all. In his entire career he has never made me doubt of his work.
And when the images and trailer of what he had done began to circulate, needless to say, I was impressed and my trust was reinforced. But visuals aren't everything, I know that, but I was hoping the book would give him enough guidelines to accomplish something magnificent. It pains me to say it a bit, and it might sound contradictory considering my rating, but I have to be frank, and unfortunately for Villeneuve, the source material worked against him.

Perhaps in his vision and in his initial plans, Villeneuve had more films in mind, especially the second part, and of course also the series planned for HBO Max. But the simple fact of calling it Dune Part One and ending it as it ends, goes without saying that it does affect the film, even if you don't want to believe it. And the reason is basic but too strong. Dune feels like the start of something even vaster, but it also feels like an incomplete journey.
We are barely scratching the surface when we're told that that journey is over.
And I can't deny that Dune is a tremendous epic. A sci-fi epic in every sense of the word.
The scale of this film is just impressive. And I'm talking about all its elements. All of them.
But when you get to the end of this specific story, it undoubtedly feels incomplete.

"The first rule of show business is to always leave them wanting more" And Dune leaves you like that. I was eager for more right there, because the film's never boring.
But ending with a feeling of emptiness, that something was missing, that will never be pleasant.
Especially if the whole thing is hanging by the need of financial success to get the rest of the story. I was going to give it a 7. I gave it the 8 because of the vastness, scope and ambition of its production.… Expand

This is phenomenal. Look, feel, sound, acting...phenomenal. As huge fan of the books, I was very satisfied with the final product in every way. The only criticism I could levy is that I wanted more of everything. That can't be bad. I'm looking forward to not only re-watching this multiple times, but part 2. Part 2 is going to be a doozy! Would be crazy if it sparks an interest in the next two books as well as they take this story so much further (farther?).… Expand

The way Denis fleshed out every character in this adaptation of the first book was masterful. The world building is on a whole other level. I know in the book Paul is supposed to have a kind of father son relationship with Gurney, but I ended up preferring Denis choice of establishing a brotherly bond between Duncan and Paul. The CGI in this movie was so clean and crisp the shadows from every ship, the way the water was running through the military cruiser coming out of the bay and of course the design of the Shai hulud, just incredible. I loved the quality of the script and the delivery of each actor, this is some next level quality on a sci-fi tale. I haven't seen a weak point to this piece of art yet.… Expand

Dune is above all an exercise in rewarding viewers' curiosity; weaving political maneuvering into a significant amount of religious and cultural lore, all while never engaging in the sort of heavy exposition that weighs down previous attemptsDune is above all an exercise in rewarding viewers' curiosity; weaving political maneuvering into a significant amount of religious and cultural lore, all while never engaging in the sort of heavy exposition that weighs down previous attempts to adapt Herbert's novel to film. Where Lynch made us sit through wordy internal monologues, so much of what we learn about Dune's universe from Villeneuve comes from context and natural character interactions. Given the inherent difficulties of setting up a new universe and some recent films' choice to almost completely forgo exposition to focus on set-pieces and characters (I'm not not pointing my finger at you, Force Awakens), such a deft return to world-building feels incredibly engaging. The religion and tribal culture of the Fremen, the esoteric order of super-powered nuns, political strife between great houses a la feudal Europe; it's all there and it's largely fascinating without being overwhelming. It's an audacious and unabashed appeal to the nerdiest among us that deserves praise in its own right. Villeneuve doesn't forget to bring the action however and the set pieces we do get - especially one particularly massive sequence between thousands of soldiers and ships - excel as well. Villeneuve seems to distrust CG effects just the right amount, knowing when to pull back or keep renderings just out of focus. The largest battle also takes place at night, allowing fireballs to stand out in awesome contrast. The result is effects that feel grounded and consistently believable. Outside of battles as well, the movie is a delight to behold. Every piece of sci-fi tech is thought out in the nerdiest but also most elegant of ways. Energy shields for example are depicted in a manner that visually communicate the logic upon which they function without said logic ever having to be explained by a character. Spaceships and weapons are also largely aesthetically distinct from what you might find in obvious points of comparison like Star Wars or Star Trek. Here, for instance, space ships can take a much more organic form, with the ships we see in much of the latter half resembling dragonflies. Costume and architecture are perhaps even more impressive; opting for a stunning, ancient look with even great levels of attention being paid to the tiniest of objects e.g. the design of a certain, highly-unpleasant box which makes an appearance early on.

The high-stakes world Villeneuve sets up provides context for some wonderfully tense performances from Chalamet and Ferguson. As Paul, Chalamet is at times over-confident and naïve but thankfully never insolent. His relationship with his mother is fraught from the first scene yet neither character is willing to endanger the bond they both rely upon to survive throughout the movie. Ferguson also does a wonderful job depicting Lady Jessica's conflict between duty to her order and House, and her desire to protect her son. Rampling and Skarsgard are two other standouts, conveying incredible amounts of menace not with words but a glance or well-chosen tone. Giant sandworms be damned, a dirty look from Charlotte Rampling may be the most intimidating thing in Dune.

All of these strengths mean the film's two and a half hours pass very quickly. Despite that run time, however, the credits do run exactly when we feel the central conflict is finally set up. This is a part one after all, and no one should go into Dune expecting any sort of resolution. While this approach is bound to frustrate more than a few people, it's much preferable to an alternative where the entire story was jammed into a single film. Villeneuve's choice to give his Dune space to breath should be viewed as a wise one; offering up not only complete context for the coming conflict teased throughout the film, but also affording the opportunity to appreciate the intricacies of Frank Herbert's world-building. It's hard not to hope that this more patient approach to blockbusters will attract a sizeable audience and prove this kind of sci-fi can succeed. For now though, Dune deserves celebration as a singular accomplishment regardless of its commercial success. Here's to more nerdiness on the big screen.… Expand

All the major characters are here playing their roles faithfully and truthfully which means epically. This is a story about the universe, of thousands of star systems and planets, eating holy war across the galaxy in the name of Muad Dib, who is the Kid Atreides. He will ride sandworms, survive a nuke, free the Firemen and lead them across the galaxy - to the Kids fright, waging holy war in his family name.

This movie is **** perfect. Absolutely perfect. Blade runner was a disappointment, I liked Ghost In The Shell but that was an 8. This is an easy 11, it will be watched for decades and hopefully become more popular than Star wars. This is game of thrones in space.

My favorite part was the consistent yellow sandy look of the movie and the design of the buildings and starships as they are faithful even though many find them blocky and boring. There are technology that is not meant to be beautiful but functional, an 80s style vibe of heavy construction equipment not sleek starships. But there is magic, genetic editing, nukes, special armies, and so much more.

The style is called brutalist and it is brutal. It is also a favorite style of fascism, a la Nazis and the Italian dictator Mussolini.

Perfect. Absolutely perfect story.… Expand

I enjoyed watching this for the most part. Most of that enjoyment comes from the actors carying the movie as every single one embodies their respective roles. There are artistic liberties taken of course, but most feel like they enhance the movie similar to the way that the books are by integrating real wold religious practices and deep ideology. One thing I would warn people about going into viewing it is that it should have been called “Dune: Where Everyone Is Almost Whispering And It’s Hard to Hear A Lot Of What Is Said, But It Doesn’t Matter Because You’ll Get The Gist Of It.” All the a-holes telling me that I needed to go see this in the theater can eat an elephant scrotum because it would have driven me crazy to not have subtitles for a lot of this film without the whispering issue. Another issue I have is that in all of the years of promotional material for this movie not once have I seen reference to the subtitle that comes up at the brief title screen as - “DUNE: PART ONE.” Without that information I would have been very upset with how the movie ends. I like the design of the film, but the pacing and the overall flow is just too slow for my taste. As tense as this movie can get the music is a bit much at times. While the overall score is not bad, it stands out in a big way. A few cues made me laugh out loud as they “mickey mouse” hit and were way too much for even the people watching with me. I don’t think that the work was taken too seriously or that it’s one of those films that “insists on its self,” but for now it just has too much to live up to from previous entries. Even some of the visual effects of the ships looked a little weak here and there. It’s unfortunate, but I found myself checking off the things that had and were to happen instead of enjoying what was being presented as I enjoy the above mentioned previous entries. I’ll definitely give this another viewing, technically a third as I watched it twice already, and I’ll look forward to the next installment. I know the books are HEAVY with detail, I just hope that they chose to do more within the scope of the story instead of drawing out the films runtime with a narrative film style relying on slow motion bravado and too much flash forward inane imagery. Fans of the book should give it a watch and Sci-Fi fans in general will get likely enjoy this first entry from Denis Villeneuve.… Expand

Denis Villeneuve creates another banger. This isn’t my favorite of his films but it’s still fantastic. My main issue with it though is that it is on the slower side and there is an emphasis on set up here but with the knowledge that it’s set up similarly to the Lord of the Rings films then it wasn’t something I took a major issue with. Even if it’s a lot of set up, it’s an engaging and investing set up. Besides a couple of scenes, I was fully engaged with the story and characters throughout. On a pure technical level, this film is masterful. The visual effects are off the charts. All of the ships, locations, and animals feel incredibly realistic and whimsical. The cinematography is fantastic. I prefer the cinematography in Blade Runner 2049 but it was still amazing here. Every shot looks incredible with how it’s lit or the framing. The performances were pretty great. I wouldn’t say this is the best performance from these actors with the exception of Jason Mamoa and Rebecca Ferguson. Both of them do a great job and I’m excited to see what else they can do. Hans Zimmer once again puts out another banger score. This is easily the better between this and No Time To Die but both are still great. The character work definitely helps the set up feel engaging. We don’t get a lot of exposition dumps about our characters but we are shown how they act and it’s great. I wouldn’t put this at the top of a Villeneuve ranking but it’s up there and I can’t wait for the sequel. Definitely check this film out when you can. It’s worth the price of admission.… Expand

It's just a breathtaking, beautiful movie from start to finish. Incredible screenplay, cast, cinematography, production design, VFX, stunts, costumes, sound, direction and score. Once again Hans Zimmer has created an immersive soundtrack that sucks you into the mesmerising world of Dune... it's the perfect accompaniment to Denis Villeneuve's masterfully created motion picture.

The final "This is only the beginning" scene will have you leave the cinema full of awe and wonder, completely satisfied and wanting for a sequel. Days later and I'm still reflecting on the marvel that is Dune: Part One.

People are insane in calling this not a 10. I've seen the movie 4 times, I've read up to where the movie ends in the book and dude... the movie is pretty loyal to the book.

Some people complained that some of the characters felt underdeveloped- Duncan Idaho in particular- and like... dude. he's the same kinda underdeveloped in the book too. The movie is beautiful. People who are mad at it are the kinda people who like to be told things rather than shown things. which is valid. some of the internal monologue is missing. it didn't really bother me or affect the story of the movie.… Expand

This is an EASY 10/10. I never read the book and admittedly didn't get into the first movie, so I came into the movie with a clean slate and reasonably low expectations. Denis Villeneuve continues to produce the most incredible visual compositions, I would watch this movie with no sound and it would still hold my attention. On the other hand, the pacing can trip some of us up and I don't begrudge anyone who felt the film to be too long or too much overall. Personally I feel it was an incredible kick off to what hopefully develops into a multi phase franchise. The film does a great job of 'show don't tell' gone are the days of voiceover by the bene geserit explaining the whole landscape. Overall the film felt like the first episode of something greater, and as good writing always should, It left me wanting more!… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is a perfect parallel to Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. I had a conversation with someone months ago when talking about how Denis Villeneuve was making this adaptation. My cousin, a film buff, was interested in the film and asked me my opinion. I told her that it would be interesting to see how it comes out because the book is famous for being dense and notoriously difficult to adapt. Every attempt at turning this book I to a film or series has been an objective failure. But this is a director that made a non linear short story into a masterpiece film in Arrival. (I consider it one of the best made films of all time.) I said that LOTR was exactly the same and it took a genius to make this a good film. Just as predicted, Dune was a lot like Fellowship of the Ring. Well done, very labored by necessity for world building, somewhat hard to get into, but a foundation for a very good story to be told. I don't think everyone will like it but it's just like LOTR in that it's a very serious attempt at an overly serious story.

It takes about 50 minutes to get good and the visuals are required to carry the film too much, but even still the major pieces are all solid. The acting is good. Direction, music. All good. It just is not the best writing for a screenplay, where it is for a book much like LOTR. But like Fellowship it was better than expected while still being something you may not want to ever watch again. It likewise is a setup for another film (or more( that will likely be even better.

Spoilers:

The major issue with the film is that we have another muffled story of a space Jesus type with 'magic' powers being forced to stop an evil empire with violence and prophecy. All the time themes of anti-capitalism and anti-colonialism coming in heavy handed and slightly muddled with the good guys thinly suggesting that the real prize is the strength of the natives, called desert power in this film. It makes your eyes roll a little every time they say this. It does, however, feel like when W. Claimed that freedom for Iraqis was the reason America invaded Iraq, though the movie did suggest that they were trying to gain power for political reasons. The movie might have felt more relevant 15 years ago.

The movie is beautiful and if you don't use your brain too much while watching the film you should get drawn in eventually. But the film uses about 50 minutes on world building and exposition before anything truly interesting happens.

It feels like extra melodramatic Star Wars with an Arrival esthetic which is okay by me. But it lacks humor and that may be enough to turn people off. I would recommend the film but suggest that you come in with light expectations. Who knows if this is a good first chapter in a great series or if it's just a good adaptation for an incredibly difficult book to translate.… Expand

Dune 2021 elaborates more on the points that was missed with every move prior to this. A lot of people will complain about how the ‘84 was able to complete the whole movie in one run but it was messy and a flop. Dune 2021 stops at a fantastic point it keeps the audience wanting more. For True Dune fans we all know part 2 is going to be legendary , just like with any great roller coster you need to build your way up to the top it’s still exciting during the process but that drop is doing to knock your socks off.… Expand

Before diving down to the point, Dune is impossible to translate on the big screen as there were attempts that other filmmakers tried to do with Dune but never worked. Acclaimed Director of Mulholland Drive, David Lynch, tried to faithfully adapt Frank Herbert's Dune, but messed up due to studio interference all thanks to Universal for messing him up. Then, there was Ridley Scott and his vision of Dune was never seen due to personal tragedy which had him abort the project because of it. And lastly, there's legendary cult Chilean filmmaker, Alejandro Jodorowsky, known for his trippy indie films such as El Topo and The Holy Mountain and his savage version of Dune was the best movie never made all thanks to studios being greedy for not trusting him from adapting the impossible as he completed everything by creating the look and officially casting the warriors (Pink Floyd, Mick Jagger, Orson Welles, David Carradine, Salvador Dali, Udo Kier, and a name of few..) before it was scrapped from us. Jodorowsky's Dune was way ahead of its time that most sci-fi films paid tribute to greatest movie never made and I highly recommend watching his documentary before seeing the big thing in theaters or at home. Now lets fast forward to the present, we finally gotten Denis Villeneuve's Dune, and his vision of Dune is massive, provocative, and violently superb in each and every way that this film presented. The scope of Arrakis is enormous and uncharted in a way that makes the action sequences in this epic adaptation so badass as the music by the legendary Hans Zimmer and the terrific instant Oscar-worthy winning cinematography by Grieg Fraser steps in as Paul Atreides with his badass father Duke Leto and the Fremen fight the Sardaukar aka House Horkennen from taking the spice away from the planet. There's no doubt that Denis Villeneuve gets the long awaited Oscar attention he deserves after adapting the impossible of how complex Frank Herbert wrote Dune and it is masterfully faithful from the book. The characters in this film are awesome and realistic, the visual effects and costume/production design are immaculate crafted, and the story is mad epic for part one. It can be a bit baffling for some that don't understand how complex Dune is or thinking it's wokey pokey, but the action sequences and narrative tension in this epic is what made Denis Villeneuve's Dune so unique compared to Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings franchise and Denis Villeneuve is the easily the best director working today and there's no doubt that Part Two must be made whenever he's ready to make it so we could see the glimpse of House Corrino and the feared Feyd Rautha in action.… Expand

Since Dune was announced I kept hearing people say "It’s the next Star Wars". At first I thought they were crazy but now that I’ve seen it, I think they were right. Dune is a masterpiece. One of the best sci-fi movies ever made. As a huge fan of the book, this movie impressed as it remained faithful to the source material. The visuals are insane and Hans Zimmer's scores just makes it better. The best movie of 2021 for me.
