Parts which were opaque invited more thought. I hope our culture can invest in it, like star wars and mcu. The universe seems like it can hold up to a ton of examination. Expand

Literally whole run time I never felt necessary to blink! Each and every Frame was Out of the world combined with the exhilarating music it's a treat!
The pacing at start was bit slow although the setup and world building is legendary once the 2nd half kick in this movie is literally Mind-blowing! The SciFi elements were awesome and the acting was mesmerizing, the story was amazing and the direction is legendary
The whole politics and houses things were engaging and the action scenes it was eye candy. The desert worm scenes, the war scene and the Paul's dad's death scene was amazing as hell and the ladies entry before Paul's hand dream thing that music is literally chilling I had goosebumps
The extraordinary powers were not that focused but the visions were engaging the ending was quite unexpecting I thought it would end with something it felt like "why..I want it more" and it's keeping the hype for 2nd part. The whole movie was breathtakingly Amazing Imax Is The best way to have treat of this masterpiece
The Whole Movie is a Brilliantly crafted Cinema!

As a fan of Villeneuve's last three films, I expected some great things from Dune, and my expectations were met with flying colors. The visuals, the music, the performances, the action, all of it is absolutely fantastic. The film is very long and does have some flaws when it comes to pacing, but these points are insignificant when compared to the passion and detail that went into this epically large project. Just watch Dune, preferably in theaters if you're able to. Expand

This film while it has some action is not action packed start to finish. What this film is, is part 1 and it spends a lot of time setting up the pieces for what is to come in the next film. The film is full of intricate world building that made me extremely interested in the universe. I came to this film as someone who has not read the book yet and after watching the film I am interested in reading the book. I am not a big sci-fi reader. The scenes are well shot, the story so far is interesting and the acting is good. The special effects are also good. Overall if you go in expecting a film that is merely a part one I do not think you will be disappointed. While it isn't a done deal I am pretty sure there will be a part 2 and if part 2 is of the same caliber has this film I believe the ratings for these two films will be much higher. This film is all about approaching it with the right expectations. Expand

I have to say, Dune 2021 was the best cinematographic "experience" I had in a long time!
To be honest, I wasn’t expecting the keep-on-drooling-for-a-couple-of-years ending… But I’m gland it’s happening! Can’t wait to see the (remaining) cast to bring more stories to my eyes, ears and conscience…

Probably the best film I've seen since The Lord of the Rings. The only reason I'm not putting it above LotR is because it's a bit shorter and we don't have an extended cut, yet.

Cinematography, what can I see. It's stunning. The story, the best of the best. Music is amazing, acting even more so. Pacing? Don't listen to critics, every Dune reader will be glad that the pacing is slow. It doesn't feel rushed, it covers all the important parts and you feel the depth of the story.

The intro alone leaves this impression of something monumental on the horizon, which is the same impression you get from LotR intro, even though Dune's intro is far less action packed.

Watch the movie in the cinema. It's completely different experience. You can't catch the magnificence of scenes on a small screen.

I"m probably in the minority wishing the movie had been a tad longer to better flesh out some secondary characters, but otherwise it was actually better than I expected, given the difficult source material.
Many have criticized the ending of this first part, but I think it was forced on the director by the studio decision to not finance both parts of the movie at once: given the several-year production pause, he had to stop at a point where his younger actors could age a bit without it looking jarring in the resulting film.

Certain dialogue was missing but didn't harm the storytelling or the plot. For those who haven't read to book there is a slight time jump from parts 1 and 2 in the book and where the movie left off was near where the time jump happens. While those who haven't read the book are confused and feel that the story was incomplete, trust me you would be even more confused with the time jump and the rate of the second half of the book . Trust me it gets better. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dune will probably go down in history as one of the Epics that the world needs. It’s necessary for a movie to have the one moment that you say “Wow I would watch that again”, this movie lacks that. You feel the repeat that there actions get boring in the middle of the movie. A clever set up for the 2 next installments. It feels like the weaker one of the soon to be trilogy. I would be excited for these next movies because it will be a more action filled movie. Expand

For those of you saying that the plot moves along too slowly or that pacing is an issue, don't worry, Michael Bay is still making movies that you can enjoy.

For those who love having layers of mood and emotional intensity build, and appreciate the feeling of being immersed in a classic sci-fi story, then this version of Dune absolutely nails it. What a great film. The movie is long, but the time flew by and I am excited for the next installment.

The acting performances were mostly beyond reproach, the cinematography was exemplary, and the sound and visual effects submerge you in this wondrous world and make it impactful and fulfilling to experience.

Bottom line: The movie isn't perfect, but it is a great example of what compelling story-telling and world-building are possible with a big budget is brought to bear. If you expected Guardians of Galaxy, sure, you'll be disappointed. This isn't that. If you want to raise your sights and experience a sci-fi story with more depth and feeling, then you can't lose with Dune.

En-US: It is an interesting film with a potential far from being reached. It was a film with a lot of expectations for most fans of other franchises, which caused an internal despair for those who watched and didn't like it so much (like me, for example). With lots of screen time and a slow story to bring the characters closer together as the film progresses, the feeling is that the entire trilogy could easily be fitted into just one film. That's not to say the movie is bad, especially for the first movie in a sequel. It's a decent movie with a huge acting and a good script, but nothing more than that for now. I will wait for the continuation with a little lower expectation.

Um dos melhores filmes que vi na década. A anos não vejo uma linguagem diferenciada com uma atmosfera densa, mesmo que a sena não tenha nenhum tipo de ação ele te prende.

I say that because the film itself is quite disjointed, and the characters in general are quite unlikeable, and the two characters you will take an interest in, those being Dave Bautista as Glossu Rabban, and Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, aren't in the film that much. I don't understand why you would have such big name actors, and then not really use them.

If you are unaware of the Dune story, Timothée Chalamet plays Paul Atreides, the heir of House Atreides. A brilliant and gifted young man, destined for great things. He has to travel to a dangerous desert planet called Arrakis, also known as Dune. This planet has a substance on it called "Melange", also known as "Spice". This is a drug that can give humans longer life spans, and increase brain capacity. The drug is collected by huge machines that scrape the planets surface, of course life isn't so easy and there are giant sand worms that are a constant threat, as well as deadly storms.

After a betrayal Paul and Lady Jessica, played by the gorgeous Rebecca Ferguson cross the desert to find the Fremen, natives of the planet Arrakis who they hope will help them.

This film is really Dune Part 1, and it only covers half of the book, so another film will be released at some point in the future. Because of this, the end of the film does suffer greatly, as it just kind of finishes, without any real climax.

The acting in the film is ok, Dave Bautista as Glossu Rabban is excellent, Mamoa without a beard is distracting, but as mentioned earlier, if you have no idea of the plot, have not read the book etc, it is hard to know who you are supposed to be following the fortunes of early on. You see two huge names in Mamoa and Bautista, and you would be mistaken in thinking they will be the main protaganist and antagonist. But they are not in it that much. By the time you realise that the young Paul Atreides is the main character, half the film is over. So I really do believe a second watching will improve not only your enjoyment, but also your understanding of the film.

The Good
Beautiful cinematography, everything looks and sounds wonderful, the costumes, make up, visual effects etc are all top notch as you would expect in a big budget film.

The Bad
At times the film feels a bit disjointed, and perhaps too many characters thrown in the mix early on may leave you a littleconfused. There is also a total lack of lighthearted moments, the closest you get to it is the odd line from Jason Mamoa.

Overall
A serious epic, that fans of the book and original movies should love. But for newbies to the franchise, it might not quite hit home on first viewing.

I score Dune 2021 a fair 7/10

it's an okay movie, but its weighted down by a lot of unnecessary spectacle with wide shots of arrakis and caladan and not really touching on where it matters, which is the characters and their relationship with the galaxy around them.

It didn't feel rushed at all, it was properly paced and perfect. I've actually read the book so I'm freaking out over the sequel because there's so much more y'all aren't ready for. Count Hering scares me though... I don't understand the negativity people have for this film, it seriosuly a masterclass in cinema. -Peace Expand

As for this outing, followed the book for the most part.

Disliked the whispery vocal delivery Why whisper in the frikkin desert?? What purpose does it serve?

I dislike Timothy Hairdo in this movie. I dislike Z in EVERY movie, I dislike her as an actress and as a person. She rides rough-shod over Tom H which does not endear me to her at all!

Dune 2021 is a decent film, but it is not a great one. It has high production values and great visuals at times, the film is seriously lacking when it comes to telling the story. The director has no feel for the source material and what makesDune 2021 is a decent film, but it is not a great one. It has high production values and great visuals at times, the film is seriously lacking when it comes to telling the story. The director has no feel for the source material and what makes the novel great. The pacing of film is way too slow. The film adds material not in the book to cover production mistakes. At the same time it omits key parts of the story. Had the pacing of the film been better and the extraneous material been removed, there would have been plenty of time to tell the actual story from the novel.

One of the major problems is that the film is woefully miscast. Timothy Chalamet is way too old to play Paul and physically is not up to the role. Due to this miscasting, the Paul of the novel gets transformed in to a wimp who isn't sure that he wants to become the duke. Several pointless scenes were added to the film to cover this miscasting.

Rebecca Fergusson as Jessica was a another bit of bad casting. Instead of the noble character of the novel (see, e.g., Francesca Annis in the 1984 Dune), she cowers all the time.

Gurney Halleck and Kynes were also horribly miscast to the detriment of the story.

Jason Mamoa is hardly the Duncan Idaho of the novel but this is the only "miscasting" that actually works in the film.

Because the story is so truncated (in material, but not in screen time) and this is virtually no character development, the film could easily have just eliminated Thurfir, Gurney, and Kynes from the film entirely with to no effect in the final product.

The sources material and budget were there to make a great epic film. This had the potential to be the Star Wars of the 2020's. Sadly, the result with Dune 2021 was just another Sci-Fi film The film is worth seeing but its only good and not great. The end result is much like Avatar where you just have to enjoy the visuals and put aside the plot.

As terrible as the 1984 Dune was, it did a better job of world building and has camp value. I suspect in five years it will be more watched than the 2021 version because it is more entertaining.

In conclusion, those saying the film is horrible are going overboard. Those calling it "a masterpiece" are deluded fanboys. Dune 2021 is in between, as its mediocre box office demonstrates.

Fortunately, Timothée Chalamet possesses the power to create compelling characters. Otherwise, this might have been more of a slog. It takes place 8,000 years into the future, when planets and rulers are the stuff of grand sci-fi legend. In this case, the young man and his family travel to a desert planet, where inhospitable events and creatures await. Director Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049) has once again created worlds with grand settings and impressive visuals. (I saw this on the big screen, which is how a spectacle like this deserves to be seen.) This isn’t a typical sci-fi outing: There’s very little real action, but plenty of dialogue, which, even though it’s serious, manages to maintain interest. Even so, it’s stately visuals and intense situations keep it involving.
NOTE: As you can tell from the title, the film ends before the second part of the story unfolds. Due to the success of this one, it’s been slated for production.

This was a very solid movie. I would have purchased a digital copy of it if they hadn't race and / or gender swapped multiple characters in it. Was happy to borrow a copy from a friend and check it out - will do the same with part 2 when it launches.
