Before diving down toBefore Star Wars and Game of Thrones were a big thing in today's sci-fi Hollywood lore, there's Dune and Denis Villeneuve's visual interpretation of Dune is a cinematographical epic that must be seen on the big screen. Before diving down to the point, Dune is impossible to translate on the big screen as there were attempts that other filmmakers tried to do with Dune but never worked. Acclaimed Director of Mulholland Drive, David Lynch, tried to faithfully adapt Frank Herbert's Dune, but messed up due to studio interference all thanks to Universal for messing him up. Then, there was Ridley Scott and his vision of Dune was never seen due to personal tragedy which had him abort the project because of it. And lastly, there's legendary cult Chilean filmmaker, Alejandro Jodorowsky, known for his trippy indie films such as El Topo and The Holy Mountain and his savage version of Dune was the best movie never made all thanks to studios being greedy for not trusting him from adapting the impossible as he completed everything by creating the look and officially casting the warriors (Pink Floyd, Mick Jagger, Orson Welles, David Carradine, Salvador Dali, Udo Kier, and a name of few..) before it was scrapped from us. Jodorowsky's Dune was way ahead of its time that most sci-fi films paid tribute to greatest movie never made and I highly recommend watching his documentary before seeing the big thing in theaters or at home. Now lets fast forward to the present, we finally gotten Denis Villeneuve's Dune, and his vision of Dune is massive, provocative, and violently superb in each and every way that this film presented. The scope of Arrakis is enormous and uncharted in a way that makes the action sequences in this epic adaptation so badass as the music by the legendary Hans Zimmer and the terrific instant Oscar-worthy winning cinematography by Grieg Fraser steps in as Paul Atreides with his badass father Duke Leto and the Fremen fight the Sardaukar aka House Horkennen from taking the spice away from the planet. There's no doubt that Denis Villeneuve gets the long awaited Oscar attention he deserves after adapting the impossible of how complex Frank Herbert wrote Dune and it is masterfully faithful from the book. The characters in this film are awesome and realistic, the visual effects and costume/production design are immaculate crafted, and the story is mad epic for part one. It can be a bit baffling for some that don't understand how complex Dune is or thinking it's wokey pokey, but the action sequences and narrative tension in this epic is what made Denis Villeneuve's Dune so unique compared to Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings franchise and Denis Villeneuve is the easily the best director working today and there's no doubt that Part Two must be made whenever he's ready to make it so we could see the glimpse of House Corrino and the feared Feyd Rautha in action. O filme consegue ser lento e apressado ao mesmo tempo. Tenta ser misterioso mas é extremamente expositivo. Nenhum personagem é aprofundado e nem as relações entre eles. O filme parece estranhamente vazio e sem emoção.

This movie was horrible. I loved the novel and enjoyed the David Lynch version, but this version is really bad. If you subtract the effects, all that’s left is a poorly adapted screenplay and mediocre to atrocious acting.

I mean, even if you MENTION this movie, you are already overhyped it.

Boring, uninteresting, no characters, no storyline, no plot, no action, no NOTHING, just 2.5 hours pure, crystallized boredom.

I bet the same people who like this wearing masks driving their car alone.

Oh, and just to add insult to injury, Momoa is a PEDO, and one of his victim is Zendaya.

One of the best sci-fi movies ever made. As a huge fan of the book, this movie impressed as it remained faithful to the source material. The visuals are insane and Hans Zimmer's scores just makes it better. The best movie of 2021 for me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Actors that believe in the story and a visionary director have created a masterwork in sci-fi for the senses. Having recently completed the 5 books of Dune the level of anticipation for this adaptation of Dune has been huge... I'm a fan of the 1984 Dune and I'm not afraid to say it... If you've read the novels you know the best is yet to come and we have a calibre of actors that are capable of delivering part two and beyond... atleast until the end of book 3 and I would be a very happy desert mouse.
It is intriguing to see Paul's visions as it makes 0you ponder the thought of how much of the second part has been completed... hopefully audiences will thirst for Dunes continuation.... the best is yet to come

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. By in large, amazing. Fantastic visuals and audio. Characters were likeable, just wish we had more time with some of them. Didn't find it slow at all. Wish part 2 were ready to go. I'm pleased they took time to clearly telegraph dark things to come in terms of Paul's role as a "savior" -- they go out of their way to emphasize the Missionaria Protectiva installing and exploiting myths.
Nits to pick: the relationship between spice and space travel could have been clearer. Yueh and Hawatt could have benefitted from more characterization.

A fantastic experience with stunning visuals, magnificent set pieces, and production designs, and a powerful Hans Zimmer score that transforms throughout the film and serves as an important character in its own right. With a run time of 2 hours 35 minutes, Villeneuve's film is highly entertaining and rarely time-consuming. With stunning visuals that aid in explaining the complex world and diplomacy of "Dune" and the planet Arrakis, which isn't a problem because "Dune" is so distinct and contains so many dynamic scenes that newcomers like myself will be returning for more viewings.
This is one of the year's best book adaptations because everything is presented in a coherent and beautiful manner, and everything is neatly recapped, which will please fans of the book series. Additionally, there is no question that, without a doubt, the entire ensemble cast does as well by the script by selling the audience on the “feudal interstellar society in which various noble dynasties control planetary fiefs,”
Is "Dune" a film that reminds us of what a Hollywood blockbuster can be? A gripping tale that is both action-packed and thought-provoking. Villeneuve's "Dune" is another masterpiece, and as science fiction enthusiasts, we should all be overjoyed that he will continue with Part 2. As good as "Arrival" and "Blade Runner 2049" are, this film has a true sense of profundity that distinguishes it as a genuine sci-fi magnum opus

From the most joyful or deeply human moments, to the most horrible or deeply inhuman moments. Sometimes raw and dark as life can be, sometimes wonderful and magical as life can be...

A universal saga in infinitely more ways than one... A mythology filled with values and philosophies colliding with one another... A multiplicity of beliefs, where certainties and uncertainties are entwined with one another, like two inseparable snakes seeking each other without ever finding each other...

Mystical and evanescent, as well as concrete and visceral... Dreams and premonitions, choices and actions, space and time... Or where the role that you play is written but is not, has already taken place but never will...

A cinematographic fresco that is immensely majestic and glorious like the greatest of paintings or the greatest of concertos...

... It answers everything while questioning you about everything, because it is simply giving you the pure truth.

PS : From the entire casting and their performances, to the cinematography+photography+design & visual language as a whole, to the action+choregraphy+music+costumes, the staging and overall atmosphere, the lore/world building, its entire mythology (and its codes), with countless messages and layers... Everything in this movie is pure mastery, pure genius.

An absolute masterpiece.

Also, there is really not main strong story, so much development without any significant climax . Acting is ok, but very odd at times, special effects are good but the design choices of the vehicles look so weird, the carryalls looks incredible nimble and useless vs the harvesters , and the dragonfly ships I mean they really look unpractical! specially on a dessert world! , but feels that there is something big missing. Honestly, might need to rewatch it but dont really get exited to do it. Overall very boring, there is really no tension, feels like a massive cliff hanger from start to finish Expand

Left the theatre each time with warm fuzzies, a feeling that I had just witnessed something special. Similar to how I felt coming out of LOTR for the first time, twenty years ago. There are things shown in this film that I have never seen done, or at least never done this well. I have never seen sand tremble, shift and explode off the screen the way it does in this film. Or watch particles suspended so vividly in the air. And so it bears repeating: maximum screen size yields maximum results.

As someone who enjoyed the source material, I can say that most criticisms levelled at the movie would only be the same ones you'd level at the book. I say this because Denis' adaptation is about 90% faithful, which is rather striking, as it also feels very much like a Villeneuve film. Either way, the outcome is most welcome. Any details glossed over in "part one" (orange bible, banquet scene, Gurney playing the baliset) would have disrupted the gorgeous pacing of this film, which knows when to linger and when to move things forward, when to rise and when to fall, with a HUGE assist from Zimmer's flowing score. In an endless cinematic sea of big dumb boring bass drops, I'll take Dune's milles-plateaux "waltz" every damn time.

It's visually beautiful to look at, the effects looks fantastic(except in few areas), the plot is slow but easy to forward, and HANS ZIMMER with that score. My only issue is that it's only part one. The story of Dune is bit complex to put on big screen and Denis Villeneuve managed it perfect, but I'll be honest, I wish they can bring back Intermissions to make it a longer movie. This is a tricky one to review. On one hand it is visualy impresive with great acters and staying true to what Dune is, on the other hand this movie only works if there comes at least one more movie and that starts where this end.

To explain why.
This movie explains the universe and sets the stage, it explains what is going on and hints at what is to come. These things it does well, and if we get at least one more movie this is a 10/10. As a movie that builds into another it is a strong and great movie.
On the other hand that is all it does, it builds up to what is to come, and so if the next movie does not start where this ends, then I am done with this movie version of Dune, because as a stand alone movie it fails.

So short about the rest.
The acting is great, the right persons in the right roles. They all fit and do their jobs really well.
The visuals are amazing, to the point that it often felt like I was watching a work of art rather then a movie.
Dune is not your standard Sci-fi and the movie dares to show that.

Again I must say that the movie is a strange one to review, it in many ways deserve a 10 yet I have to tell others that there is a chance you will hate the movie, it is simply not for everyone. There is also the fact that this does not work as a stand alone movie without another to pick up where this leave things.

This word gets used a lot these days but the only other movie(s) I can think of that is an adequate comparison on this front is the Lord of the Rings trilogy. You have a 'world' with several factions, or 'Houses' as they're called in Dune, all with rich histories and complicated motives. There is several themes; political, ecological, religious, familial, economical, and of course The Chosen One.

The movie sticks with the book almost to the letter and it works for the most part. Ultimately Denis V wanted to do justice to the source material and he absolutely succeeds.

Visually, this movie is as stunning as any I've ever seen. Not surprising since it's a Denis V movie who tends to be incredibly detail oriented. The cinematography is gorgeous with several individual shots worthy of a frame and wall hanging. But my jaw dropped several times watching scenes that clearly had to be CGI but could not be distinguished as such. I genuinely think this may be the best CGI I've ever seen. Even the best CGI money can buy (and marvel's bought most of it) still looks like CGI, but the work in this movie is seamless. Really amazing stuff.

I'm not sure how it will play with people who aren't familiar with the book (I just read it about 6 months ago and really liked it).

Final thoughts: the movie is definitely just a Part 1. It is incomplete on it's own. There is not a satisfying end but literally a "This is just the beginning" to wrap things up. I for one have already reserved my typical seat when Part 2 arrives.

I hardly ever see movies in the theaters but this one I made a point to go see and I absolutely loved it. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the same guy who did Blade Runner 2049, another film I love. But honestly I might have enjoyed this movie more. It's hard to say since this Dune is literally only Part 1 and whether a Part 2 will even be made is kind of relying on how well this movie preforms at the box office. So yes incomplete, but what's there in the 2 1/2 hours is fantastic gritty sci-fi eye candy. It's important to note that the Dune universe is very lore heavy and had I not been familiar with it by proxy of seeing David Lync's 1984 adaptation, I might have not enjoyed it as much as I did. That's not to say they didn't do a good job of explaining the key details about the universe however, seeing as how it is a bit slower than some people might expect I just think it will help many viewers get more invested into the film with a little background knowledge before hand. If Part 2 is ever made, and done to the same quality as Part 1, then I'd have no problem calling the complete package a 10/10. Expand

If you enjoyed Blade Runner, style, visual, pace wise - you will at least like Dune.

We barely have good cinema anymore, Dune is a breath of fresh air, a tour de force with a slow buildup and a cliffhanger (hence, part one and with a VERY good reason).

You don't have to know everything about the universe of Dune, or have read the books to understand what is happening. To me, without even reading the books, a few things felt spoon-fed. Finding the answers is much more satisfying than being given them right away. Visually it is incredible, subtle and powerful score, great casting and script. There are a few creative choices which had to be made, but nothing is without compromise and Dune does not suffer for it in the slightest. It is a feel and an experience movie. Not an action blockbuster. Only criticism I can agree with is the pacing, which is not bad on its own, its not what general public expects with a cliffhanger at the end. But some people are spoiled beyond redemption. Dennis makes fantastic movies. I am glad that studio heads trust in his vision and capabilities, resurrecting Blade Runner and Dune is a gargantuan achievement. For those who rate Dune so low - please, do everyone a favour and watch Marvel movies/Netflix. Again - we barely have good cinema anymore, Dune is a breath of fresh air, a tour de force with a slow buildup.

Denis Villeneuve manage to hit the right balance with this adaption. A balance strong enough to make this difficult adaptation work. I just don't see how he could've made a better version clocking in at 2.5 hours. Would the movie be even better and more true if it were longer? Probably. But that's not how cinema works unfortunately. Even if we never get an extended version, I already know that I will be more than pleased with this one. I saw it twice at the cinema, and even if I unfortunately missed it at IMAX, I had one of the greatest cinema experiences I've ever had when I saw it at a dolby atmos cinema. This is without a doubt one of the greatest audiovisual moments in film history. I can't wait to watch it over and over on OLED when it comes out on UHD. To be transported back to Arrakis, again and again.

I'll be completely honest and say that I'm not Hans Zimmers biggest fans. I do respect him as one of the greatest composers in modern times, but at the same time I feel like he can become a bit too stagnant at times. His score for Dune is anything but stagnant though. I feel like it's probably the best score he's made together with Interstellar. Just a powerful force of nature that feels otherworldly and familiar at the same time. The DP Greig Fraser also did a wonderful job with the cinematography. When the news came out that Roger Deakins wouldn't shoot Dune, I was at first disappointed, but Fraser somehow managed to make me forget it. He helped frame a marvelous transportation to another world. When it came to the acting Chalamet, Ferguson, Isaac and Skarsgård all gave excellent performances and further helped solidify the film. Especially Chalamet and Ferguson, who without questions became Paul and Jessica. It'll be very interesting to see how characters from the film, as well as new ones, will be portrayed and develop in part 2.

Villeneuve continues to deliver astonishing cinematic experiences. Experiences that makes me question life itself and that follows with me long after the ending credits. For me he was already considered one of the greatest even before he made Dune. I've never seen anyone do what he has done since 2010. Seven movies, of which six I consider to be some of the best movies I've ever seen. Mind you, I have yet to see Polytechnique which came out in 2009. A movie I'm very much looking forward to see, as much as I dread it because of it's heavy subject. In the end I feel very inspired by his work. Inspired to keep creating, be it music or writing. And I can't wait for what's coming next. Hopefully it'll be Dune: Part 2. So that my longing for another trip to Arrakis – can satisfy my thirst.

For those not familiar with the story, the family known as House Atreides embarks to the planet Arrakis (aka Dune) in an effort to obtain valuable spice that gives them power. They are soon thrust into a war against the rival House Harkonnen family for control of the planet and the spice. Meanwhile, the Atreides son, Paul (Timothee Chalamet) is called upon to fulfill an unexpected destiny and lead his family and the native Fremen people to victory. Having never read the novel, but having seen the 1984 version made by David Lynch that was a critical and commercial failure, but which I still enjoyed and appreciated for its campiness and fun nonetheles, I had high hopes for an even more faithful and solid take on 'Dune', and while this film certainly delivered, I must admit there were a couple of aspects that left me wanting more, and that couldn't quite exceed my expectations. Going in, I knew the pace would be a little slow, and it most definitely was, as the film takes its time with the exposition and setting things up throughout. However, it left me feeling slightly underwhelmed in spite of the grand scale and scope of the film, which is made up for rather well through the gorgeous cinematography, production design, and always brilliant score by the legendary Hans Zimmer. As for the performances, what an incredible all-star cast we're graced with here! For starters, Chalamet is perfectly cast as Paul Atreides, and while I normally enjoy his performances quite a bit, I never really felt the full potential of his talents here, as he was simply reduced to lots of soft-speaking and whispering, as well as lots of flashback voiceovers. His parents however (played by Rebecca Ferguson and Oscar Isaac) are both highly impressive and brilliant here! We get some reliably great tough guy performances from actors such as Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, and Jason Momoa, and Stellan Skarsgard is rather chilling in his villainous Baron Harkonnen role. Zendaya also shows up sporadically throughout the film (albeit mostly in flashbacks.) Like I said, I really felt myself somewhat underwhelmed, unsatisfied, and wanting more by the time the film ended, but this could also do with the fact that this film is only the first half of the story, so hopefully that second part will get greenlit. Overall, it's a beautiful spectacle of a film to behold that does take its time with pacing and story moreso than your average big-budget sci-fi film, but the visuals, themes, and performances are all impressive enough to make this a world worth diving into. Each one of the roles is amazingly cast, with a whole bunch of excellent actors bringing their best. And Hans Zimmer music is, as most of his work, breathtaking.

If you know nothing about the world of Dune, the movie is still good, although some of the conflicts might be a little bit opaque. An outstanding work. Let's hope that they can keep the quality going for the next one.

We want to be transported and taken on a journey. As a huge Dune fan, who isn't among the popular estimations of who is watching this film (Over 35, White, and Male. I'm under 35, Black, and Female), I will admit that I was hoping to see certain scenes that ended up not making the cut. Although, it's a bit of a bummer not to see certain stand out scenes, I had to remind myself that this is an interpretation for the silver screen. Villeneuve has done a beautiful job re-creating this world for the OG fans and for the Dune neophytes. The world of Dune is already complex, and to really give it the value it needs may take a TV show (...I know). The silver screen must take the audience into account. Again, a lot of people are unfamiliar with Dune, and Villeneuve did a great job with introducing this world to them. The sets and views were breathtaking. I'm just looking forward to part 2, and possibly part 3. I'm looking forward to a more in-depth dive into the characters. This film was a love letter to both the OGs and the neophytes. Welcome to Arrakis! It's only the beginning. Expand

My rating is relative to other science fiction films. If you do not enjoy science fiction, you will probably not particularly care for Dune. I almost never rate a film as high as 9 - but, I can't think of any other science fiction film I would consider better. I kept watching for weaknesses - but, every aspect of the film is excellent - even areas such as props, costumes, makeup, etc... everything is excellent in my opinion.

Casting is superb, acting is beyond excellent... as is directing, editing (sound and video), etc.

The story comes from the 1965 Frank Herbert novel which is universally appreciated as excellent science fiction. The screen play adaptation follows the original novel fairly closely and is excellent in my opinion.

I was not particularly that interested in seeing another film adaptation of the Dune novel... but, I could not stop watching this excellent 2 1/2 hour movie.

I know the Dune story - I read the novel several decades ago. I knew the first half of the 2 movies would be primarily backstory. I expect I will enjoy "Part Two" even more than "Part One".

The cast is excellent, the soundtrack is perfect, the pacing was very good in my opinion it included the essential parts of the book, and most importantly of all it seemed very faithful to the book with one exception I noticed which is a change of gender and skin color for one of the side characters. Not sure why they made this change but I was okay with it I think the actress did a fine job. Additionally, the movie impresses with stunning visuals, involving atmosphere, convincing acting, stellar cast and a fitting, although a bit slow pace. People might get frustrated at how it ends, giving way to a second part, but for those who know the story from the source material, it is for the best that they preserved a two part structure to better accommodate the whole epic story. I never read the book but knew a little about the world from playing one of the video games as a kid. I also could never get into the 1984 film version, and just thought it was OK, and did not have very high hopes for this film either. Definitely was surprised, and it looked great on my widescreen. If you feel safe enough to go to a theater, this would be a movie to see in it (IMAX even better) but if not...it will likely still look and sound great on any decent system. Its a strong enough film, that it can work on the small screen imo. The key being...I felt like I could connect with the character, whereas in the 1984 version it just felt like a lot of...information.....there was not much to connect to in the original. This film is beautifully shot, and sets up the story pretty well, and keeps you engaged. Really good acting, sound, music, and the action picks up in the 2nd half. Amazing counter to Star Wars as its a bit more serious, like a DC version of Star Wars, with elements of Lawrence of Arabia, and Gladiator. Easily 8/10 and would be 9/10 except for the fact that it doesn't really complete the story as..it is just part 1...therefore...part 2 + 3 would likely also be...8 or 9/10. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In general I think the film is okay, good in parts, odd in others. I'm a long standing lover of Dune, books, film, games. Mostly the books. This film could have been incredible but... it's too dark and cold. Why does Arrakis seem dark during the day? Every item of clothing is sombre. For the most part this post Gothic look works but not for everything. None of the characters, with the possible exception of Paul at times feel fake and bland, nothing makes you love the good guys or properly hate the bad guys. Everyone is almost monotone and it's all the time. The acting is also sometimes off, poorly done. All of this is forgivable. What is not are the changes and deviations to the books which, is somebody's life/critical work; new people who feel they can be a bit whoa, a bit wey, a bit too cool and liberal clever don't get to F up somebody else's work. They don't get to take a famous painting and add a wee boat in, rub out significant parts just because. They don't get to take the Mona Lisa and make it somebody called morning Dave. So... why the hell is Keynes a woman? Why are critical statements not made e.g. when Mohaim tests Paul with the gom jabbar, why does she not say (in shock at what she has done) "no girl child has ever withstood so much". This may seem a minor point but it's not, it is a massive indication that not only did she want Paul to fail but that by succeeding, Paul is likely more than just a normal person. Before anybody goes around calling me sextet, don't be stupid, we are talking about a world in which the truly powerful are almost ALL women. It could and should have been amazing, it isn't and it's a real shame. Expand

Incredible cinematography, amazing soundtrack and some excellent character development. Rare to get sci fi of this quality. Can’t wait for part 2.

The eerie foreboding atmosphere, the spectacularly evil Harkonnen, Paul, Lady Jessica, and so on were all great. The special effects were clean and so realistic in sort of a simplistic fashion that fit in with the story perfectly. As having read the book, I would just say there's no way you could get into all the detail and character development in a movie as opposed to the book but never the less, this movie did a terrific job on telling the story and had my focused attention throughout. Needless to say, really looking forward to part 2 and perhaps beyond. Expand

It's like I watched this amazing pilot to a tv show (that covered so much ground and got me so hooked) and then it ended. So yeah, I'm gonna need that sequel ASAP. In fact, I hope they make an entire franchise of this. I feel like I just got a taste of what this story/world can offer. Expand

Keep in mind that this movie is just part one (we're gonna have to wait two years for part two ☹️).The world-building is so convincing and believable, and there are no caricatures here. Speaking of which, Skarsgård's portrayal of the Baron is menacingly, mesmerizingly believable unlike the exaggerated portrayal by Kenneth McMillan in Lynch's version (Skarsgård's portrayal and Ferguson's portrayal of Jessica are my favorites of the the film). Can't wait to see more of the Baron in part two.

Everything is so lovingly, carefully crafted here. In some ways, almost too crafted. While there's a feeling of dread that pervades almost the entire movie, there's also a coldness and sterility that underlies much of the film, which is mostly what keeps Dune from being a 10 for me. The coldness/sterility is by no means overwhelming; in fact it's subtle. But I just didn't feel the emotional impact in certain parts that I should've felt. It's not the fault of the actors, who were top-notch, but rather the direction and/or the script. We don't get time to experience whatever it is that bonds some of these characters. **** SPOILER ALERT **** E.g., I know that Paul loves his father and loves Duncan, but when they died, and Paul reacted with great dismay and despair, it just didn't hit me as strongly as it should have.

The other thing that knocked it down (probably just half a point) was that the music started to become grating. By the time Paul and his mother meet the Fremen, I was sick of hearing that same theme -- the woman singing with the abrasive tone -- over and over... played rather loudly. I'm well aware of music being used to shape the drama, but I felt that that theme was overused.

But those are quibbles. Dune is a great story told in a fascinating universe, and Villeneuve has brought to screen the most believable version of the story yet. If part two is at least this good, it'll be well worth the wait.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dune is excellent. The story simplify the book and make it clearer for the movie. Yes, it doesn't loose time on the navigator stuff, but DV did use the Witches clan in this story. Which, I think, clarifies a lot of things regarding Paul, his mother and the political factions. There are great epic scenes in this movie. The main battle is great but doesn't turned into a CGI fest. The sand worm are really done well. The way they present Paul visions is intriguing for the watcher. The music of Hanz is superb and the sounds effect in theatres are a blast to listen to. I though there were some colorized scenes that had some poor choice of settings. I give it 88%. A superior Dune adaptation and better rythm then Blade Runner 2049, don't miss out on it. This is way easier then reading the books but could serve has a great introduction. Expand

Timothée Chalamet gives his best performance yet, if he doesn't become a star from this film, I don't know what will.
For some of the downsides, the story can be somewhat dragged out and there are several long-winded segments that can make the film seem like it needs to pick up pace.

Summary: Go watch it. It's gud. Ok, now the in-depth one - I didn't know Dune. I never did. Never watched the first movie, never read the book. Before the movie came out, I did a tiny bit of research and found out that George Lucas stole about 60% of Dunes ideas and made Star Wars out of it. Just by the way, imitation/envy is the greatest compliment. Alright, so, the movie is beautiful. The sound is extraordinary (if you have a decent setup). The story is nice, even though it lacks in some regards - one rogue doc can sabotage an entire base? Shield generator? Communication? You serious? Isn't there supposed to be, I don't know, a whole host of soldiers guardians these key stations - ESPECIALLY right after they took over and were expecting sabotage/resistance?

This just seems like an off point in the story. Especially since no ship was in orbit, "all" soldiers were... sleeping? Wao, that's convenient. Too convenient. That's the kind of storytelling I don't like. Other than that particular "scene", the story is decent, the characters are well-made, I like the "hints" or little "indications" of something greater approaching. This feels like one part of a greater franchise and I love it. I never - not even once - felt bored. Every scene has a meaning, every scene manages to create one more portion of the world. The only thing I would criticize are the designs of the ships - especially spaceships - they are dull and grey as heck; and not even in a necessarily functional way. In that sense George Lucas did it much better - he made cool Spaceships you wanted to have as a child to play with, Dune here has a few square chunks of concrete that you don't want to have as a model. Oh, did I mention that the visuals and the sound are stunning? Damn, if you have a decent OLED and an Atmos setup, go watch it. Now. Because!
