Again we have the main character as a chosen-one hero, with pathetic speeches and senseless futuristic battles with knives and swords :) The whole story is not working with the futuristic world, there is not even a single original idea or even an attempt to make the futuristic world more realistic and believable through the perspective of human nature, like for example it was made in "Games of Throne". Great visuals. Expand

Details on the spacecraft just gorgeous. So exquisite I never once thought I was watching CG effects. Absolutely refreshing after years of watching the half-assed CG effects in Star Wars and Marvel movies that still feel like I’m watching a semi-cartoon. There is so much more I could say about the genius of this film - the acting, the script, the screenplay, the soundtrack (!!!) - but I’m going to leave it at that. Expand

Denis Villeneuve has to be one of the best filmakers today. Not everyone can do what he has done with Dune. It's a beautiful story, especially thanks to its visuals, score, and a great performance from Rebecca Ferguson.

How does it compare to Lynch's Dune? Each of these two adaptations succeeds in the areas where the other failed, and vice versa. In a same way, one is telling aspects of the story that the other left in a corner.

Let's start with the music.
How does it compare to Lynch's Dune? Each of these two adaptations succeeds in the areas where the other failed, and vice versa. In a same way, one is telling aspects of the story that the other left in a corner.

Let's start with the music. The soundtrack by Zimmer was rather generic, and while it would perhaps please the yuppie yoga crowds, we're here in a totally different world, soundscape-wise, to the psychedelic, New Age soundtrack that made Lynch's Dune so great. The latter soundtrack was a standalone music gem in itself, adding stellar quality to a rather flawed movie.

The striking, dramatic visual poetry (I'm thinking of the repeating image of the hand opening while hearing about the "sleeper awakening") also isn't there much. A lot of witchy murmurs and visions Paul is having are there, but here they clearly lack originality as this stuff is taken directly from Lord of the Rings. A lot in this movie in fact makes it sound like it's trying to be a Lord of the Rings... something that is plaguing many modern blockbusters. While Villeneuve is a decent filmmaker with a vision, this is a Canadian director working with a Hollywood studio, not a Peter Jackson working with WETA studios outside of Hollywood's (and Harvey Weinstein's) grasp, with a plethora of original ideas, home-grown artists and visual magic-makers.

So production quality consideration first... this is an overall beautifully made film that doen't refrain from grandiose scope, yet it is rather sobre and extensive. It definitely isn't near the baroque insanity of Lynch's film that is, along with the soundtrack and photography, one of the greater sides of the movie.

Spaceships, buildings are huge, yet not the dope byzantine visual awe that only directors like Lynch, Jeunet or Wes Anderson would create. I didn't get especially awed with the Guild's Ship that is basically just a flattened giant concrete donut in space... All this grey stuff flying around -some looking like house appliances from posh ultramodern kitchens- ain't very appealing or surprising. So while Lynch had to struggle with many technical limitations, which made his more sci-fi stuff look silly, the gothic/art deco design behind it all was still vastly better inspired than what we got here.

On the other hand, it has the narrative maturity that Lynch's take didn't really have (you can't make me forget that ridiculous intro with De Laurentis' daughter). The movie is well-structured and methodical, being careful about the details that matter... but only up until the third act which becomes very confusing and bloated. A bunch of narrative developments happening in the end makes it feel like there's two or three open endings.

There's also in this third act a moment of a few seconds where Lady Jessica is having a clearly apparent desire for her son Paul, not long after Duke Leto's death. Okay... an Oedipal spin can be interesting to bring into such a space mythology, yet we're left asking: how was it needed? Why such a strange detail, or does the director really knows where he's going with this? As others said Jessica's character seems more involved with her son than her husband, so I don't see where this fits with the book, that contains no apparent incest subtext like this, where Jessica's struggle is more about dealing with the discipline of the Bene Gesserit cult and standing for her husband and her son.

I liked the idea of having Chani introduced as reluctant towards Paul, after being hinted as completely otherwise in Paul's dreams, as this sets a more interesting evolution between the two characters. I was positively surprised also by this singer Zhendaya as she did deliver a solid performance for a starter. Same for Javier Barbem powerful, raw, feral composition that makes him feel like taken straight out of Lawrence of Arabia.

It is possible that the combination of the two parts (or three?) will render this film greater than it is now. A lot still has to happen, and this one feels like more of an introduction to a universe. It succeeded at NOT making Lynch's film look badder than it was. It even made me want to watch it again.

It's a slog, but def better than Dune (1984).

I wanted to like this. It has a lot of things going for it. The cinematography is beautiful. The sound design was good (but could have been better). The protagonists are likeable. This is a major improvement. Chalamet has a better written and better performed Paul than MacLachlan had in Dune (1984). In fact, everyone from Atreides comes across better in this version with the exception of Lady Jessica who is uncharacteristically frightened for nearly the entire movie. Jason Momoa stole the show as Duncan. He was great!

Now, for the bad guys: Much Worse this time around. I was very disappointed here. Where the villains in Dune (1984) are larger than life and boisterous and colorful, the villains here comparatively boring - very one-dimensional. This film overall has a more somber and plodding tone while Dune (1984) managed to capture a manic kind of energy that's sorely missing here.

Thankfully, there is much less exposition here for which I am grateful. However, it's been replaced by a dozen dream sequences for which I am annoyed. 90% of Zendaya's appearance is in the form of dreams. It drags. It drags to the point that I was looking at my watch and wishing it would end. That's never a good feeling. Hopefully, part 2 can fix some of these issues.

Instead of relying on a suspenseful story, Villeneuve underlays beautiful (landscape) shots with such a powerful, loud and dramatic music score that it tore me out of the story every time and I began to think about why these scenes, which were rather insignificant for the process of the story, had such a dramaturgy. It almost seems as if Villeneuve is afraid that his movie would be too boring without. Blade Runner 2049 had the same problem! Villeneuve seems to use epic images and a dramatic and loud soundtrack to distract from the fact that he just doesn't have what it takes to tell exciting and good stories.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Where is Feyd Rautha, Paul's equal opposite? Where's the music? Where are the mentats of the spice mining guild? For that matter where's more than 2 lines of dialogue for Thufir Hawat and Piter De Vries? But really the most disappointing is the backstory and lack of character building and plot depth of Wellington Yueh who should have had the single-most pivotal role of the entire first chapter. what was the purpose of leaving all that essential narrative out? Minimalism? for 30 extra minutes of watching Jason Momoa fight?
Where's the thematic difference in the houses? No aristocratic depth, no totalitarian depth. Where is the weirding way? Perhaps worse is the 'Hey, dude' dialogue. Aside from that I counted 3 times they bring up the idea of 'desert power', which in David Lynch's 1984 adaptation had empathetic meaning, which in David Villeneuve's version comes off more like in-phrase. 'Like, it's all about the desert power dude.'

The sound is borked also, where you have to turn it way up to hear some of the crap dialogue only then to have it blow your speakers out when the 'Tha-wumps' happen. Was this done on purpose to stand -in because they weren't really interested in creating something with any actual depth?

why did Paul's mother have to coax him on his 'rite of passage'? Dumbed down for feminism? Why was the intro so poor, like kindergarten exposition?

Ok, now onto what they got right. While the dialogue is poor, they did emphasize a sense of seriousness. No Jokey smurfs on this run, kiddos. The scenic widescreen shots were very good, the computer generated tech was amazing. the engagement with the Fremen was decent as it demonstrated the brutal nature of their people and the cost to earn their trust. But probably the most empathetic thing I find with this 'B' action flick is a lack of 'woke' overtones.

First the good - There's basically 2 ways to approach a film with source material such as this. Either make it "fun-size", and palatable with people who purely want escapism (i.e the mass public), or try and evoke the nuance and political complexity interwoven throughout Herbert's novel. I'm frankly really glad they went the latter avenue, and overall I think the info overload actually pays off well. The acting, special effects, cinematography, aesthetic, costumes, and overall feel was stellar. It felt epic without being pretentious, and I would imagine seeing it on the big screen (yes, I'm one of the toadies who streamed it) would only add to the awe. However, much of the dialogue and the pacing were rather bland. A lot of pure exposition. As I said, all the actors did a really good job (with the possible exception of Javier Bardem, who's accent was jarringly distracting to me. Why does he sound so drastically different to the rest of the Fremen? I half-expected him to say "fine, we'll settle it with my lucky quarter" at any moment) but with an oft one-dimensional script, there's only so much that can be done.

And lastly, my real chagrin. The pacing. I don't know if the original novel frankly has enough sourced material to warrant two long movies. This movie is 2 1/2 hours. They could so easily trim 30 minutes. A major pet-peeve of mine in any movie is when they have a bunch of slowed-down walking scenes, void of any dialogue. There's a TON of said shots riddled throughout the film, that only makes the rather slowed-pace only feel uncomfortably more so. And they could have been clearer. Hard to tell who's who and even what faction is what sometimes.

I did enjoy it. I'm super excited for part 2. I don't however, recommend it to people who are on the fence about seeing it, or aren't a sci-fi/Dune fan. I just wish that when thinking about it a day later, I wasn't focused on questionable approaches or confoundment with certain elements. The Worms are worth the price of admission.

So, to fully appreciate the movie, it is strongly advised to read, or rather immerse oneself in the book beforehand. The movie does feel like it skims through a synopsis of the book, and despite being very slow paced, actually feels rushed, as some parts form the book were changed, shortened or deleted. However, the visuals, sticking close the original material and general from-a-fan-for-fans feel makes me not able to hate the movie. I hope part 2 will be at least as good, and that Denis will get the chance to film other parts, at least the first main sotryline (Dune-Messiah-Children). Expand

People claiming that it was hard to follow simply cannot piece together the masterfully subtle clues and storytelling. People claiming that characters were soulless must have watched with their eyes closed and missed the fantastic and intense acting. Someone claimed the technology didn't make sense, for example asking "why do they have spaceships yet use swords instead of guns?" The movie clearly demonstrates (multiple times) that you cannot simply use guns against the personal forcefields because they intercept high-velocity projectiles. Some of these troll reviewers must love being spoon-fed exposition because they are clearly not capable of observing and interpreting storytelling without frequent explanations about everything in direct terms so they don't get lost. Yes, Dune has multiple books of complex lore that could not be fit into five movies, much less two. But, the movie presents enough of it in a way that is understandable and not overwhelming. You just have to pay attention, observe, and use deductive reasoning to figure some things out. It really isn't hard. Some of these reviewers are absurdly dense. Anyone who has read the Dune series could not have asked for a better film adaptation, especially given the modern climate of CGI-clickbait movies with ham-fisted or nonsensical storytelling full of plot holes. Dune takes place in the year 10k in the future, a lot is going on now but there is this desert planet called Arrakis which has an incredibly valuable (the thing most valuable in the universe actually) element simply called Spice. This spiceDune takes place in the year 10k in the future, a lot is going on now but there is this desert planet called Arrakis which has an incredibly valuable (the thing most valuable in the universe actually) element simply called Spice. This spice thing is mined by “The Empire '' by some proxy civilization led by House Harkonnen but apparently, they are changing the exploiters to House Atreides (Timothee’s house), so the Harkonnen aren’t that happy but they have to comply. On top of that, Arrakis is inhabited by the Fremen, an advanced civilization that has been involved in this mining war but they just want to leave them and their planet alone.

On the surface level, Dune 2021 is about anticapitalism and anti-imperialism with some hero’s journey stuff going on, but there is much more to it… well at least if you’re looking for more. At first, I was somewhat skeptical, since the trailers featured a bunch of superstars and have this Marvel superhero movie which I’m sick of, but since the movie started and the plot progressed I was slowly but hooked to its premise. It does have certain things that will resonate as superhero-ish to be more palatable for a bigger audience, after all, this is a commercial movie that cost hundreds of millions of dollars, so it was kind of expected, but still, I was pleasantly surprised by how the movie has a lot of concepts and it has this “author” seal that almost tastes like high-art cinema.

Visually, Dune is stunning, a lot of work has been put into every scene, you can see many symbols and motifs here and there that will mean something to everyone. It features some huge spaceships and huge landscapes among other things that are heavily enhanced by an IMAX screen which I strongly recommend watching that way if possible. Given the scale in many scenes I almost feel that I could be there, Dune is truly mesmerizing. Every civilization feels like a different culture, with its rituals and values, what's most brilliant is that this aspect is always told with image and cinematography and rarely with expository dialogue, so you can make your interpretations about them.

Aside from many of the supporting cast actors I didn’t know what to expect from Timothee or Zendaya, I can’t say much of Zendaya still, but Timothee was really good, in some scenes, he showed that he can achieve a lot of range and he did an amazing job as the protagonist, the same can be said for any other character but he is one of the best parts of the film.

For how good and enjoyable the movie is, it isn’t a perfect movie and it has some flaws, they’re not that bad, but they are worth mentioning. Starting with its runtime, after having the first and biggest climax the plot slows down a little and by entering the final act you will certainly feel somewhat tired, maybe cutting out some of the most expository parts of the first half would make the runtime less hard to be, still, I couldn’t have it differently than it is, so who knows?. Also, the main plot features some aspects that could be a little problematic in our social environment by today's standards, for instance, it has the recurrent story of the white man freeing an oppressed civilization, it certainly has been adapted to our current standards but still, let's see how this unfolds in the second or third movie. It has other problems but they are so minimal that maybe I will just be nitpicking.

I was surprised by how Dune was executed to the point that it is simply one of the most beautiful films that I have ever seen, it also showed me how it inspired a lot of other pieces of media, most notoriously Star Wars, I haven’t seen how much Dune has to offer yet, but I’m looking forward what will come next and receive it with open arms.

----------------------------------------------------------

Beautiful film in all, to be seen absolutely, directed by Villeneuve director remember of masterpiece films such as Blade Runner 2049, Prisoners, Arrival. The cast is really excellent, spot on everything, excellent direction, does not take your eyes off the screen for a single moment, not tired and not boring (indeed passionate and a lot) as the first DUNE was. The film that reflects throughout the novel, we hope that there are other sequels since it is not finished and is for now the first, I think of at least a trilogy. I recommend to all fans of science fiction and not, to see it as it is not disappointed but rather dazzled by its beauty.

The Ugly: Like the Hobbit films this series is being stretched out as much as possible which is hilarious given the many books in the Dune franchise. Dune is a slow burn, the scriptwriters unfathomably slowed the pace. Changes made for pacing are easily justifiable when transforming a book into film but the changes in this film make zero sense. The writers deleted material from the book and extended scenes that could easily have been shortened. In light of the fact that two films are being made to tell one book it's hardly necessary for the scriptwriters to completely eliminate any material from the book. So many poor decisions were made by the producers of this movie. In retrospect this really isn't surprising considering the fact that the director and scripters belittled the source material in seemingly every interview they gave. Expand

I can clearly understand that you also enjoy Dune, but may have not (like many of the general population) been too amped up over the 1984 version, which was frankly baffling, but had many excellent ideas that were just not capable of being put on a movie screen.. yet. Now that we have the CGI to create an utterly bland desert planet full of goofy outfits and giant worms here in the 21st century, you'd think we'd have also figured out that slow-motion effects should not be used to elongate every dreamlike sequence in a freaking film.

I enjoy this "take" of Dune, even if it is a bit generic, but that's kind of what you get when you are basically copy-pasting imagery described in the book. Granted they got a lot of it right except for the "hunter-killer" for some reason. Casting was great, aside from Momoa and Drax who probably didn't deserve the amount of screen time they both seemingly got. Newcomers all did well, but some of the others like Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman (lacking range or screentime), sort of seemed out of place as did Josh Brolin who must have not read the book's description of his character at all. Stellan Skarsgård didn't even bother to chew the scenery knowing his entire body outside of his face would be CGI anyway, so that was sort of disappointing. Oscar Isaac plays a pretty good father figure, but the beard didn't make him look only barely 20 years older than his own son unfortunately.

Overall I thought the fighting choreography kind of sucked, the battle hardened imperial forces looked like goobers and the "highly trained" Atreides guards didn't seem too tough either (with a few scenes having random women fighting alongside them). Good thing the director completely forgot to put in any gore or violence, otherwise I might've actually cared about these random extras who didn't put much of a fight for their very lives up against their old rivals- the Harkonnen.. since like forever.

I was one of the few that actually got pretty bored with "Bladerunner 2049" when it hit theaters, and ultimately left the showing after Jared Leto showed up to ruin the entire movie. Of course I finished it later and thought, "Wow, this Director sure knows how to make a pretty movie stretch far beyond a 45 minute plot." Unsurprisingly- 2049 also flopped at the box office for being an overly theatrical prima donna that was aping the original film to the point where they had to retcon the original film's storyline just to make the pseudo-sequel make some semblance of sense. Or maybe it was to explain Ford's cameo? Its hard to know for sure.

All-in-all, I think this version does the best job adapting SOME parts of the book, but visually it was quite bland. I think some of the costume designs looked better, but some of them also looked worse than the original David Lynch film. The Harkonnen weren't nearly as imposing or disgusting, the whole reasoning behind the ordeal was actually explained better in the original film, so that's pretty atrocious writing to be honest. I also wasn't a big fan of the constant flashbacks (flash forwards?) from the main character slowing down already kind of slower paced film. It didn't ever feel too long, but the end of "part one," if we get a part two that is, was definitely not a highlight for me. In fact, the final twenty minutes of the movie basically go nowhere, because all the tension is gone when they aren't being chased by an entire army or hunted by the Sardaukar. Some of the best moments were early on, with Lady Jessica, her relationship with her son, the "Gom Jabbar" scene, which was honestly very well done and helped illuminate why its so important to Paul as a character and for his development later on and the movie spent a bit more time building up (though unsuccessful) other side characters as well. I think the book is impossible to really adapt, though many have tried. Denis Villeneuve isn't a terrible director, but I personally am not a big fan of most of his films. The fact that he has tried to do more or less the impossible with Dune is very commendable though and I would at least like to see a part two, but lets hope it lands on a better note, preferably a little less bland and a little less long.

Left the theatre each time with warm fuzzies, a feeling that I had just witnessed something special. Similar to how I felt coming out of LOTR for the first time, twenty years ago. There are things shown in this film that I have never seen done, or at least never done this well. I have never seen sand tremble, shift and explode off the screen the way it does in this film. Or watch particles suspended so vividly in the air. And so it bears repeating: maximum screen size yields maximum results.

As someone who enjoyed the source material, I can say that most criticisms levelled at the movie would only be the same ones you'd level at the book. I say this because Denis' adaptation is about 90% faithful, which is rather striking, as it also feels very much like a Villeneuve film. Either way, the outcome is most welcome. Any details glossed over in "part one" (orange bible, banquet scene, Gurney playing the baliset) would have disrupted the gorgeous pacing of this film, which knows when to linger and when to move things forward, when to rise and when to fall, with a HUGE assist from Zimmer's flowing score. In an endless cinematic sea of big dumb boring bass drops, I'll take Dune's milles-plateaux "waltz" every damn time.

For myself, while the film's cinematography, acting, costumes, special effects, and soundtrack were absolutely spectacular, what the film lacked most was the most important part of any story; proper story-telling.

Let's compare "Dune: Part 1" with a film that also uses similar story-telling methods; "Mad Max: Fury Road".

"Mad Max: Fury Road" is a film that is mostly told through its visuals. Aside from its introduction of dramatic news-reel montages to transition us from our present to a future where most of the world has been destroyed due to global wars over limited resources, the rest of the film simply follows Max and the other main characters. Everything we learn about how the new world works and how its cultures operate is mostly through being observant of the world around the characters as they move through the scenes. There is never enough dialogue to fully piece everything together if we only heard the dialogue.

But as they say, "A picture is worth 1000 words". By being observant one would be able to quickly figure out and enjoy the world "Mad Max: Fury Road" brings us into.

"Dune" does the exact same thing with how they tell their story. They rely mostly on the visuals to tell the story and give the world of "Dune" its life. However, "Mad Max: Fury Road" works, but "Dune" does not. Why is this?

For one, the transition from our world to Max's world is easy to understand and see as realistic. Wars over limiting resources destroy most of the world and those still alive are the ones hoarding the limited resources left? Okay! Done!

"Dune", on the other hand, launches us immediately over 8000 years into the future without any other context as to how we got there or what the new world is like...

From the very first minute of the film, a lot of the audience remains separated from the world of the film and already become drowned in questions.

"Mad Max: Fury Road", on the other hand, presents us with a handful of questions, but give us quick and simple answers to each of them before presenting us with new ones.

- People are crazy and obsessed with cars? Its the apocalypse and cars are the only way to not only have fun but ensure that you can get the resources to survive! Done!

- Crazy people faking deity are in charge? They successfully use cult tactics and their primary access to vital resources to get power and stay in power! Done!

- We got a population of tumour-filled cult followers? They're dying with nothing else to loose because the world has been destroyed through nuking! Done!

Yet once again, "Dune" immediately launches us into a world that presents us with so many questions yet little-to-no answers that are fulfilled through visual story-telling alone;

- After 8000 years humans have travelled throughout the galaxy to different planets and have set up galactic-wide governments based on Imperial styles of government with different family houses...? Okay...

- We have people that have abilities to control others through speech and even see into the future that is overseen by a matriarchal sect where only females are allowed to have said abilities and said females work in the background to manipulate politics and bloodlines to fulfill a prophecy...? Okay...

- The most valuable resource in this time is a spice solely located on a desert planet that is not only a hallucinogen that can even help said telekinetic people see into the future yet is somehow incorporated into unspecified technology that allows people to travel throughout space through worm-holes...? Okay...

In short, "Mad Max: Fury Road" provides a visual form of story-telling that easily transitions audiences into the film and provides easy and quick questions for easy answers...

While "Dune" provides way too many questions even before the movie properly starts without giving proper answers for half of them...

It is possible to understand the basics of what's going on in "Dune" just by reading between most of the lines and jumping to quick conclusions based just on what's been shown. Yet ultimately, the film seems like one of those movies based off a long-running TV show that Hollywood tries to cram into a few hours. Its chosen method of story-telling fails to properly establish the world and any emotional investment from the audience; turning what could have been a great sci-fi story into nothing more than a fever dream.

That worked well. Apart from that, I was quite bored throughout most of the movie.

I was intrigued by the film and decided to see it in the cinema. I am so very glad I did. The soundtrack by Hans Zimmer really gave this movie a kick. But apart from the music, the film didn't lag behind visually and it is definitely a nice spectacle full of sandy locations that I really enjoyed. So the film is nice to look at and nice to listen to when the music is playing. But what about the plot itself in the finale? This is where it's just beginning and I'm slowly not sure what I should start with first. I'll be honest. As much as I enjoyed the film and was interested in what was happening on screen, it just had some minor cracks in the finale and a few things I didn't understand. I thought that the fault was on my part and that I simply wasn't giving the film enough attention, and ultimately I still think that now. On the plus side, a couple of friends told me after it was over that they didn't really know what was going on in the story, which is a bit odd after all. I'm not saying the movie is complicated or that it throws too much information at you in too short a time. On the contrary. New Dune is 2 and a half hours long, and it's only the first episode. There's plenty of space, but there are just a few families, a few names, and I just don't know how it happened, but I got lost here and there. After it was over, I spent the following days reading information on the internet and read the plot a few more times and I'm pretty clear. I'm even more sorry that I didn't understand some things during the movie, because the story of the new Dune is great in my opinion, although it's kind of one big intro that prepares you for the next installment. I am, however, looking forward to the next installment, and incredibly so. Both to find out what happens next, but more importantly I hope it will be another excellent cinema experience like this one was. I understand director Denis Villeneuve wanting to throw this film into theaters. While it will also be an experience at home with some better TV on salted audio, it still won't be the same feeling as sitting in a cinema with a proper screen in front of you with proper sound. For me, a great film that I recommend. Expand

I know in the book Paul is supposed to have a kind of father son relationship with Gurney, but I ended up preferring Denis choice of establishing a brotherly bond between Duncan and Paul. The CGI in this movie was so clean and crisp the shadows from every ship, the way the water was running through the military cruiser coming out of the bay and of course the design of the Shai hulud, just incredible. The whole politics and houses things were engaging and the action scenes it was eye candy. The desert worm scenes, the war scene and the Paul's dad's death scene was amazing as hell and the ladies entry before Paul's hand dream thing that music is literally chilling I had goosebumps
The extraordinary powers were not that focused but the visions were engaging the ending was quite unexpecting I thought it would end with something it felt like "why..I want it more" and it's keeping the hype for 2nd part. Where Lynch made us sit through wordy internal monologues, so much of what we learn about Dune's universe from Villeneuve comes from context and natural character interactions. Given the inherent difficulties of setting up a new universe and some recent films' choice to almost completely forgo exposition to focus on set-pieces and characters (I'm not not pointing my finger at you, Force Awakens), such a deft return to world-building feels incredibly engaging. The religion and tribal culture of the Fremen, the esoteric order of super-powered nuns, political strife between great houses a la feudal Europe; it's all there and it's largely fascinating without being overwhelming. It's an audacious and unabashed appeal to the nerdiest among us that deserves praise in its own right. Villeneuve doesn't forget to bring the action however and the set pieces we do get - especially one particularly massive sequence between thousands of soldiers and ships - excel as well. Villeneuve seems to distrust CG effects just the right amount, knowing when to pull back or keep renderings just out of focus. The largest battle also takes place at night, allowing fireballs to stand out in awesome contrast. The result is effects that feel grounded and consistently believable. Outside of battles as well, the movie is a delight to behold. Every piece of sci-fi tech is thought out in the nerdiest but also most elegant of ways. Energy shields for example are depicted in a manner that visually communicate the logic upon which they function without said logic ever having to be explained by a character. Spaceships and weapons are also largely aesthetically distinct from what you might find in obvious points of comparison like Star Wars or Star Trek. Here, for instance, space ships can take a much more organic form, with the ships we see in much of the latter half resembling dragonflies. Costume and architecture are perhaps even more impressive; opting for a stunning, ancient look with even great levels of attention being paid to the tiniest of objects e.g. the design of a certain, highly-unpleasant box which makes an appearance early on.

The high-stakes world Villeneuve sets up provides context for some wonderfully tense performances from Chalamet and Ferguson. As Paul, Chalamet is at times over-confident and naïve but thankfully never insolent. His relationship with his mother is fraught from the first scene yet neither character is willing to endanger the bond they both rely upon to survive throughout the movie. Ferguson also does a wonderful job depicting Lady Jessica's conflict between duty to her order and House, and her desire to protect her son. Rampling and Skarsgard are two other standouts, conveying incredible amounts of menace not with words but a glance or well-chosen tone. Giant sandworms be damned, a dirty look from Charlotte Rampling may be the most intimidating thing in Dune.

All of these strengths mean the film's two and a half hours pass very quickly. Despite that run time, however, the credits do run exactly when we feel the central conflict is finally set up. This is a part one after all, and no one should go into Dune expecting any sort of resolution. While this approach is bound to frustrate more than a few people, it's much preferable to an alternative where the entire story was jammed into a single film. Villeneuve's choice to give his Dune space to breath should be viewed as a wise one; offering up not only complete context for the coming conflict teased throughout the film, but also affording the opportunity to appreciate the intricacies of Frank Herbert's world-building. It's hard not to hope that this more patient approach to blockbusters will attract a sizeable audience and prove this kind of sci-fi can succeed. For now though, Dune deserves celebration as a singular accomplishment regardless of its commercial success. Here's to more nerdiness on the big screen.

It's not for everyone, anyone expecting nonstop action will probably be disappointed. Part 2 will be where things really get crazy. If you enjoyed Blade Runner, style, visual, pace wise - you will at least like Dune.

We barely have good cinema anymore, Dune is a breath of fresh air, a tour de force with a slow buildup and a cliffhanger (hence, part one and with a VERY good reason).

You don't have to know everything about the universe of Dune, or have read the books to understand what is happening. To me, without even reading the books, a few things felt spoon-fed. Finding the answers is much more satisfying than being given them right away. Visually it is incredible, subtle and powerful score, great casting and script. There are a few creative choices which had to be made, but nothing is without compromise and Dune does not suffer for it in the slightest. It is a feel and an experience movie. Not an action blockbuster. Only criticism I can agree with is the pacing, which is not bad on its own, its not what general public expects with a cliffhanger at the end. But some people are spoiled beyond redemption. Dennis makes fantastic movies. I am glad that studio heads trust in his vision and capabilities, resurrecting Blade Runner and Dune is a gargantuan achievement. For those who rate Dune so low - please, do everyone a favour and watch Marvel movies/Netflix. Again - we barely have good cinema anymore, Dune is a breath of fresh air, a tour de force with a slow buildup.

I am usually one who finds enjoyment in most big budget films. The worst rating I usually give on those is a 6 out of 10 or 3 out of 5. There is almost always something to enjoy about them. However, I am so confused by the number of great reviews on various sites that I had to write this review so others may see it and save their time and/or money. This is far from an action movie and what action there is mostly takes place in the dark. It is extremely hard to follow the action due to that and the silly shield effects. By the way, the shields do nothing to actually protect them which is why they are silly. I have no complaints regarding the acting but that's about it. I spent the entire movie waiting for something more until I realized there wasn't enough time for it to pick up. Slow and boring is how I will describe it to friends who will ask. Not an action movie, not much of any kind of movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The film is beautiful to look at and listen to, and the casting is surprisingly strong (I was initially sceptical of some of the choices). Unfortunately the treatment of the source material, whilst maintaining the main plot points, isn't great.

Spoilers from here:

Pivotal characters such as Use and Thuffir receive extremely little screen time, meaning that their relationship to Paul and the Atreides is inconsequential to the film. This is particularly glaring when use commits his betrayal, which simply doesn't carry the emotional weight that it should. Similarly, the machinations of the empire are barely given lip service, much of the motivations for the driving factors in the plot are reduced to single lines delivered casually by key characters in scenes that were probably quite heavily edited.

This film works as a visual accompaniment to the book, but is weak as a stand alone movie.

Watching this film made me yearn to see what could've been done if Dune were a trilogy, rather than a two part.

This word gets used a lot these days but the only other movie(s) I can think of that is an adequate comparison on this front is the Lord of the Rings trilogy. You have a 'world' with several factions, or 'Houses' as they're called in Dune, all with rich histories and complicated motives. There is several themes; political, ecological, religious, familial, economical, and of course The Chosen One.

The movie sticks with the book almost to the letter and it works for the most part. Ultimately Denis V wanted to do justice to the source material and he absolutely succeeds.

Visually, this movie is as stunning as any I've ever seen. Not surprising since it's a Denis V movie who tends to be incredibly detail oriented. The cinematography is gorgeous with several individual shots worthy of a frame and wall hanging. But my jaw dropped several times watching scenes that clearly had to be CGI but could not be distinguished as such. I genuinely think this may be the best CGI I've ever seen. Even the best CGI money can buy (and marvel's bought most of it) still looks like CGI, but the work in this movie is seamless. Really amazing stuff.

I'm not sure how it will play with people who aren't familiar with the book (I just read it about 6 months ago and really liked it).

Final thoughts: the movie is definitely just a Part 1. It is incomplete on it's own. There is not a satisfying end but literally a "This is just the beginning" to wrap things up. I for one have already reserved my typical seat when Part 2 arrives.

Keep in mind that this movie is just part one (we're gonna have to wait two years for part two ☹️).The world-building is so convincing and believable, and there are no caricatures here. Speaking of which, Skarsgård's portrayal of the Baron is menacingly, mesmerizingly believable unlike the exaggerated portrayal by Kenneth McMillan in Lynch's version (Skarsgård's portrayal and Ferguson's portrayal of Jessica are my favorites of the the film). Can't wait to see more of the Baron in part two.

Everything is so lovingly, carefully crafted here. In some ways, almost too crafted. While there's a feeling of dread that pervades almost the entire movie, there's also a coldness and sterility that underlies much of the film, which is mostly what keeps Dune from being a 10 for me. The coldness/sterility is by no means overwhelming; in fact it's subtle. But I just didn't feel the emotional impact in certain parts that I should've felt. It's not the fault of the actors, who were top-notch, but rather the direction and/or the script. We don't get time to experience whatever it is that bonds some of these characters. **** SPOILER ALERT **** E.g., I know that Paul loves his father and loves Duncan, but when they died, and Paul reacted with great dismay and despair, it just didn't hit me as strongly as it should have.

The other thing that knocked it down (probably just half a point) was that the music started to become grating. By the time Paul and his mother meet the Fremen, I was sick of hearing that same theme -- the woman singing with the abrasive tone -- over and over... played rather loudly. I'm well aware of music being used to shape the drama, but I felt that that theme was overused.

But those are quibbles. Dune is a great story told in a fascinating universe, and Villeneuve has brought to screen the most believable version of the story yet. If part two is at least this good, it'll be well worth the wait.

By it's nature it's an incomplete story but it really feels like there's something missing to make a satisfying standalone experience.
That being said, it's another gorgeous film by Villeneuve. The cinematography and locations are great, the art direction & costume designs are top notch, and the soundtrack is one of Hans Zimmer's best works. It's probably the closest someone can get to a faithful adaptation of the first chunk of the book without being 4 hours long, which I would definitely watch multiple times.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'd recommend watching paint dry for 2 and a half hours. You'll get a similar if not more invigorating experience.
Boring throughout, dull visuals, average choreography and did Hans Zimmer just not make any effort at all? Not his usual unforgettable scores, more like a Man of steel OST remix. (I cannot believe he passed on making the soundtrack for Tenet over this film)

I really wanted to enjoy this film from it's hype and excellent cast. Every character has the most pointless if not nonexistent arc with dialogue you could fall asleep to. You're even teased with visions of Zendaya throughout and she's only in it for 5 minutes at the end. Even Tom Holland would be fiddling with his Web shooters watching this film. Wasted opportunity for a massive sci-fi blockbuster. A third of the film is just wideshots of desert. Not that they aren't great shots, but everyone knows what deserts look like. Not exactly a farcry from our own imagination. Anakin Skywalker would be cringing in his seat. It's the type of film that feels like it's a single episode of a TV series; where the setting and characters are already established. I appreciate there is a book and an older film. But most viewers will be introduced into this world from afresh and it's very disappointing.

When you eventually get to the credits you're sat wondering weather it was all worth it... Well there's a part 2 coming which I won't rush to watch, so probably not. Loved the cool wasp like helicopters though. 3/10
