This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beautiful film... Hard to believe that only part 1 was filmed. This make does not slavishly adhere to the books (like some of the prior versions), narrowly focusing on the Atreides/Harkonnen, but I wonder how certain of the omissions will resolve themselves in part 2 (the guild and corrinos, in particular). I wonder what it is they would actually do differently? It is a masterful interpretation of a famously difficult source, shot exquisitely, acted wonderfully and, most importantly, is hugely entertaining from the first frame. I thoroughly enjoyed it and haven't been this excited for a sequel since the fellowship of the ring. Thank you Monsieur Villeneuve, Dune has finally been done justice. Expand

RELEASE THE SAND KRAKEN! Wait, that's not the right movie. Anyway, long-awaited and overdue, this weekend we have a review of the movie, Dune. Anyway, long-awaited and overdue, this weekend we have a review of the movie, Dune. A second adaptation of Frank Herbert's science fiction novel, that tells the story of a young man charged with leading before he's ready. The synopsis of Dune as provided by Warner Bros. Goes something like this: "Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet's exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence-a commodity capable of unlocking humanity's greatest potential-only those who can conquer their fear will survive." I know that description has you on the edge of your seat! Let's see how this blockbuster turned out.

I'll be blunt, but it's not to discourage anyone from seeing this movie. The movie is a bit boring and slow. It's just the honest truth; and, quite frankly, parts of this movie feel literally stolen from the Dune (1984). Obviously, it's images and ideas are adapted from the book, but my gosh, you can be a bit more creative with today's technology. Nevertheless, I got pretty sleepy during this movie. At times, I felt like I was re-watching the same sandy scene over and over again. I realize that this is just the opening act for what will probably be a series or trilogy but some parts are a snooze fest. Also, do we really want to see another teen-become-leader film? My answer is yes but give me more, darling! I'll admit that some parts of this movie are super intense, weird, and very pretty to look at. While I understand that there was a lot of set up to cram into this movie, I think it could've been shortened so that it felt more impactful. At times, particularly near the end, it seemed the weight of the moment was lost in the lack of urgency.

Nevertheless, the cast of this Dune is absolutely big time. You think about how big the set design, costumes, special effects are and then you're like Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, Javier Bardem and others fill out the cast. Wowza! And yet, I feel like we didn't get the most out of each actor, except maybe Jason Mamoa. You, sir, are a G. Again, it's like the rich only get richer. You'll understand if the movie is nominated for Oscars for set design, costume design, special effects, etc. The budget of this film at a mere $165,000,000 pales in comparison to the production actually displayed. You have to think Avatar scale but much sandier. I could only imagine the box office hype and big numbers this movie would make sans pandemic. There are set scenes that are just breathtaking, individual acting moments that are worthwhile. One caveat is that that creepy fat bad guy was lacking creativity.

Very long story short, the production and scale of Dune alone makes this movie worth watching. Yes, the movie is too long but do we ever complain about length with Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, or MCU films? No, I guess not, especially if you are prepared to live in a theater for 2-plus hours. Dune has it's faults but overall is a crisp, beautiful, creepy and updated world to dive into with a big box of popcorn for HBO Max, but just a bowl if you're considering going to the theaters. Even if, it is just to get to the sequel to see how the story progresses.

The whole thing as a unit is a massive sci fi epic, though it is notable that it feels like a first entry. Denis Villeneuve continues to produce the most incredible visual compositions, I would watch this movie with no sound and it would still hold my attention. On the other hand, the pacing can trip some of us up and I don't begrudge anyone who felt the film to be too long or too much overall. Personally I feel it was an incredible kick off to what hopefully develops into a multi phase franchise. The film does a great job of 'show don't tell' gone are the days of voiceover by the bene geserit explaining the whole landscape. Overall the film felt like the first episode of something greater, and as good writing always should, It left me wanting more! Expand

IT exceeded all my expectations and more. If you're expecting some big war or a big fight like comic movies, this is not for you. This about the journey and the awe of the universe containing it. Every character has a reason and feels fleshed out. The plot is really easy to follow ( I haven't read the books or watch the old film) but it never holds your hand or treats you like you're dumb and need everything to be explained through some cheesy dialogue. IT SHOWS. It open your senses with marvelous visuals and sound, and let the story go through. So please watch it in cinemas, it deserves it.
I wish the combat scenes were a bit more visceral but I can see why villenueve was a bit cautious in this subject, and it feels justified.

I'm crossing my fingers that in the world we live today a movie like this can thrive and we get to see the second part.

Probably the best film I've seen since The Lord of the Rings. The only reason I'm not putting it above LotR is because it's a bit shorter and we don't have an extended cut, yet.

Cinematography, what can I see. It's stunning. The story, the best of the best. Music is amazing, acting even more so. Pacing? Don't listen to critics, every Dune reader will be glad that the pacing is slow. It doesn't feel rushed, it covers all the important parts and you feel the depth of the story.

The intro alone leaves this impression of something monumental on the horizon, which is the same impression you get from LotR intro, even though Dune's intro is far less action packed.

Watch the movie in the cinema. It's completely different experience. You can't catch the magnificence of scenes on a small screen.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am writing on the facts, I will try without spoilers, decide for yourself - to watch or not.

Good:
1. Scenes look epic against the background of the desert and large objects (ships, planets, moons). You can put it on your desktop wallpaper.
2. Worms. The desert really kills. You understand that this is a merciless, unforgiving death.
3. Costumes. Yes, in 140 degrees heat they go without helmets, but this is rather a convention to show an acting game.
4. Some aircraft. The device of their work, animation, flights, their control, etc. have been thought over.

Bad:
1. CGI graphics. Disgusting low-poly monochrome city. Technique - squares, balls, cylinders, and other primitive geometric shapes. The same poor low-budget room décor. The highliner in the form of an empty eclair is already overkilled with minimalism. The eye has nothing to catch. It's just not interesting to watch the visuals.
2. The universe and characters are not revealed. It is not told why the resource is so valuable, how it appears, what it is used for, why travel is so expensive, why there are no computers, etc. Yes, all questions would be closed if you read the books. But that's a weird excuse for the movie. The film should be self-sufficient in itself. An excellent example of the disclosure of the universe from the latter: Demon Slayer: Train "Endless" - you don't have to watch the early anime or read the manga to figure out what's what. Even a small insert would be enough for the film. An example would be the start of any Star Wars. Those. solutions for disclosure have been around for a long time - why has not been applied is a mystery.
3. Bad combat. Firstly, it is completely incomprehensible why, when armed with firearms, people use ordinary swords? There is simply no excuse for this. And the sword fighting itself is poorly staged. They are pretentious, but the feeling is that it is more important for wars to wave epic at the camera than to fight. Hence the impression that this is training, rather than a real fight. Again there are good examples: Game of Thrones, Gladiator, 300 Spartans, Star Wars, Vikings. Each stroke is verified, logical, and looks good on the screen.
4. Music? Was she there? I would like to say that it is boring and not expressive. On the other hand, the music should complement the film through sounds, and here Hans Zimmer did his best to match the soundtrack with what was happening on the screen, creating white noise in the background. The music fits the picture 100%. In this regard, Mad Max: Fury Road is a great example, where the soundtrack also perfectly complements the film without "shouting over it."
5. Installation. The feeling that it was filmed for about 10 hours, and then the editor had to meet at least 2.5. The problem is that the elements important for understanding what is happening were shown crumpled, very quickly and without details, but at the same time there are whole chunks of timekeeping that can be cut out without loss. For example, the situation with the servant: why was it shown that she was giving a blade? How did it then reveal itself, where did the blade go? Why are we talking about palms? To show the value of water on this planet? To just burn them later? But the time to explain the reasons why the Great House left its planet and was completely transferred to another was laid in a few minutes.
Here are questions about timing. The feeling that 2 days have passed since the landing on the planet and the subsequent attack. Judge for yourself - we arrived and examined the principle of the harvester's operation. We went to bed - an attack. Moreover, the attack was expected, but no one was ready for it in the end.
6. Action. It simply does not exist. Almost not. Except for a couple of scenes of flying and fighting with swords. Can you make a movie without such scenes? Of course, there are many good straight films. Only for this it is necessary to switch the viewer's attention to other elements. But they are not here either: the picture is scanty, the scenery is poor, the music is pale, the characters are mostly not revealed, the plot is not clear to the uninitiated.

Verdict. The feeling that the director wanted to grab onto everything at once: epic, deep, wide, but in the end a lot of things failed. The film is as diligent as possible not to be Star Wars - we don't have lightsabers, we fight on regular ones. There is no strength - but there is a voice. We don't have robots yet, but we won't tell you why. And he even succeeds. At the same time, for the film to have a WOW effect, as many people say about it, it must at least show at a decent level what is already in the industry.

I never read the book but knew a little about the world from playing one of the video games as a kid. I also could never get into the 1984 film version, and just thought it was OK, and did not have very high hopes for this film either. Definitely was surprised, and it looked great on my widescreen. If you feel safe enough to go to a theater, this would be a movie to see in it (IMAX even better) but if not...it will likely still look and sound great on any decent system. Its a strong enough film, that it can work on the small screen imo. The key being...I felt like I could connect with the character, whereas in the 1984 version it just felt like a lot of...information.....there was not much to connect to in the original. This film is beautifully shot, and sets up the story pretty well, and keeps you engaged. Really good acting, sound, music, and the action picks up in the 2nd half. Amazing counter to Star Wars as its a bit more serious, like a DC version of Star Wars, with elements of Lawrence of Arabia, and Gladiator. Easily 8/10 and would be 9/10 except for the fact that it doesn't really complete the story as..it is just part 1...therefore...part 2 + 3 would likely also be...8 or 9/10. (if done by the same team etc.) It needs to happen. Expand

Denis was true to his word, and delivered a great story with a nicely balanced mix of action and character development. There were a few scenes from the book I wish had been included, but obviously the 1/2-book was already a 3-hour movie. The only concerns I have are whether those lost souls who have NOT read the books will fully understand elements of the story. That was always the danger of trying to turn Frank Herbert's Dune into a movie ... how to capture the universe he built into a movie. But the grand scope, stunning visuals, and great performances all-around earned this movie another watch in a few days -- this time on IMAX! Expand

Breathtaking is a word that describes Dune: Part One perfectly well.

It's just a breathtaking, beautiful movie from start to finish. Incredible screenplay, cast, cinematography, production design, VFX, stunts, costumes, sound, direction and score. Once again Hans Zimmer has created an immersive soundtrack that sucks you into the mesmerising world of Dune... it's the perfect accompaniment to Denis Villeneuve's masterfully created motion picture.

The final "This is only the beginning" scene will have you leave the cinema full of awe and wonder, completely satisfied and wanting for a sequel. Days later and I'm still reflecting on the marvel that is Dune: Part One.

Desert Power indeed!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Actors that believe in the story and a visionary director have created a masterwork in sci-fi for the senses. Having recently completed the 5 books of Dune the level of anticipation for this adaptation of Dune has been huge... I'm a fan of the 1984 Dune and I'm not afraid to say it... If you've read the novels you know the best is yet to come and we have a calibre of actors that are capable of delivering part two and beyond... atleast until the end of book 3 and I would be a very happy desert mouse.
It is intriguing to see Paul's visions as it makes 0you ponder the thought of how much of the second part has been completed... hopefully audiences will thirst for Dunes continuation.... the best is yet to come

Ultimately it was a fairly decent visual depiction of the Dune universe. Kind of more like a comic book adaption than a faithful retelling.

Unfortunate that this franchise has so many overweight male fans though because the fat hate in this movie is pretty strong. Obviously you gotta know what you're getting into if you've read the books and know about the Baron. But still there were definitely some deliberate choices to make fat guys look like their monstrous disgusting rapists. Kind of sucks when a film maker is sending that message to their audience when they have to know a lot of people in the theater are going to have that projected onto them.

Gotta give it a low rating just because films like this really do make my everyday life worse by training people to see fat men as nothing but villains and monsters.

So is this another hit by Denis or his first work I don't like?

Let's get the obvious out the way first, Dune (2021) is a visual spectacle! The cinematography by Greig Fraser is wonderful. Every shot in Dune is gorgeous whilst also capturing the beautiful and grand nature of the otherworld planets. The costume and set department also do a wonderful job of really making it seem futuristic. Especial praise to the design of all the spaceships as they are remarkably designed. The CGI is very good as well, thankfully. Hans Zimmer of Interstellar fame does the music score for this film and it is magnificent. He uses to great effect a choir and electrical instruments that elevates every scene in the film. Dune (2021) also features a stellar cast who all do a great job in their respective role even those with little screen time. My biggest praise has got to be for Stellan Skarsgård as the Baron who is just creepy and unsettling every time he is on-screen.

The story is also very intriguing and engaging. There is a political aspect throughout this series that gives a Game of Thrones vibe. There are alliances, secret agendas and backstabbing that keeps you glued to the screen. The movie also focuses a lot on world-building with the noble families, the "voice" power and the Fremen; a group of natives to the desert planet. All of this lore make the world of Dune feel more vibrant and unique similar to that of Lord of the Rings which managed to pull you in; Dune (2021) does the same. Denis does a great job in making all the politics and jargon stated, easy to understand for the audience. There are also a large variety of characters in the film and Denis does a phenomenal job in making it clear what their personality and agendas are. The main character, Paul Atreides played by Timothée Chalamet, has a clear character arc with the struggle of his power and him being next in line for House Atreides. Most of his story arc gets a clear resolution by the end of the film.

However, Dune (2021) is a part 1 that just covers half of the book and it shows. Most movies build up to an epic 3rd act but Dune (2021) just ends midway through the 2nd act. This ends up feeling very jarring, to say the least as it doesn't end on a high note. It is also incredibly slow-paced. Since a majority of the film is dedicated to just exposition and explanation of the world; it results in a lot of moments that feel dull and sometimes boring. Additionally, the fight scenes and action scenes are serviceable but could be improved. Apart from the fight scenes with Duncan (Jason Momoa) the others are choreographed blandly and shot awkwardly as well. Overall, Dune (2021) has a lot of love and effort put towards bringing the grand vision and scope of the novel to the big screen. Every frame in this film is eye-catching thanks to the cinematography, costumes and set design that had a lot of thought put towards it. Nevertheless, it is a very slow paced movie that might deter some people from enjoying it. Despite that, I thoroughly enjoyed Dune (2021) and it was no doubt one of the most memorable Sci-fi movies to come out. It would be a crime for this to not get a sequel!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The visuals are stunning, props for that. Sound is great. Unfortunate casting decisions bring the film down and make it basically unwatchable for me. Liet Kynes being female destroys the patriarchal society of the fremen which relegates females to mystic leaders. Making Liet female really destroys what Herbert was trying to get across, that fremen are related to modern day muslims and the oil/spice relationship. That is just one of the many poor casting decision that in my opinion, as a great fan of the previous dune movies and books, makes it basically unwatchable. The director caved too much to SJW fantasies. It interferes with the message and in this case its diametrically opposed to the book. Keynes dies in a volatile pre spice mass abandoned to the desert not stabbed in the back, not how he goes in the movie (male because its critical to the fremen). Volatile pre spice mass because its essential to the story. He dies alone because he is a desert creature. This treatment alone of Keynes makes the movie unwatchable to me.
Zendaya cant act, terrible choice for chani.
If you are a true fan of the books you are definitely not going to like this.

Through multiple re-readings, they have held up due to the depth and complexity of their mix of compelling characters, philosophical concepts, mysticism and political intrigue which work to paint a universe of immense scope. Sadly, Villeneuve's reductionist vision comes as a crushing disappointment in light of the richness of the source material.

Understandable, and even necessary, was the urge to streamline the storyline in order to make the dense original narrative comprehensible to unfamiliar audiences. This is even more the case given how much Lynch's attempt (and to a lesser degree Harrison's) struggled under its weight. However, in his quest for accessibility, Villeneuve and his screen writers cut too deep and gutted the narrative of SO much material that what makes the Dune universe truly compelling and unique is lost. The pendulum swinging so far in the opposite direction from the earlier film and mini series leave us with nothing more than just another forgettable, generic action sci-fi epic. While the universe is beautifully rendered and a visual treat to behold, very little beyond the visuals exists to recommend the film. Key elements of the social, political, ecological or anti-colonialist plots are carved out or downplayed to the point of forgettability and cliché. Key lines that could have quickly and easily added context and depth are omitted from the dialog. What remains is often underwhelming and delivered in a manner that misses accentuation of important points or conveyance of convincing and compelling emotion. This so effects characterization that the fate of the characters becomes at best an intellectual concern. Odd timing choices also exist where information that would have provided insight into the universe, character motivation and lend narrative tension are often provided either after the scenes in which they would have been most useful or so early in the film that by the time they're relevant they've been lost amongst the clutter of prior scenes and the slow drag the lack or real content turns the film into. The sheer missed opportunity Villeneuve's film represents is made even more shocking and tragic given the decision to cut the original novel into two films. With a 155-minute runtime to tell just half of the story, you would expect a significantly deeper and more nuanced tale, not one floating so much closer to the surface.

While I feel Villeneuve's approach to Dune was attempted with much more artistry and reverence for the source material, it nonetheless reminds me of Verhoeven's treatment of Heinlein's Starship Troopers, another conceptually rich novel that did not deserve the cinematic abuse it received. Villeneuve, with what feels like some more or less simple changes regarding direction and the screenplay, could have delivered to us not just a visually stunning film containing the action he was clearly aiming for, but also one that preserved Dune's more cerebral nature that has made the novels so engrossing for so many.

As has been the case for Villeneuve's directorial predecessors, the challenge of Dune has proven to be too much. Hopefully, we won't need to wait another 25 years for someone with greater vision to make an attempt to deliver the adaptation both Herbert's novels, and we as an audience, deserve.

A movie can be many things but it can’t be boring. I appreciate their detail in obviously keeping to the book, but the movie felt like watching a book and that’s not what I want. Another big problem is the failure to have a worthy climax or self contained payoff within this movie.

They tried with (*****spoiler*****Paul defeating the freman who challenged them *****end spoiler*****). But Paul being a great fighter wasn’t exactly how I saw his core struggle. That seems like more of a side story to deal with his responsibilities as future leader. If that was going to be the movie’s pay off they could have built that up more earlier so that scene hit harder.

The movie just felt shapeless. I understand that it’s part one but they needed to find more of an arc to this individual tale to make it work as a movie. They went hard on the Paul’s interior dreams and visions angle, but that stuff didn’t really work for me. It’s hard to translate to film and in my opinion they actually overdid it with the same dream flash again and again. I could’ve done with less of that and more of advancing the plot further.

I also wasn’t a big fan of the music and found it quite distracting at times particularly when the loud chorus of female voices would suddenly ring out.

It may seem from my mostly negative review that I didn’t like the movie but I did enjoy a great deal of it, and I’m optimistic that a dynamite part two will improve this part in retrospect. For now though I must award this movie a 6/10.

This is yo there with Aliens and Terminator 2, and Interstellar as well. And this is only half. It is almost 1 to 1 in keeping with the book. All the major characters are here playing their roles faithfully and truthfully which means epically. This is a story about the universe, of thousands of star systems and planets, eating holy war across the galaxy in the name of Muad Dib, who is the Kid Atreides. He will ride sandworms, survive a nuke, free the Firemen and lead them across the galaxy - to the Kids fright, waging holy war in his family name.

This movie is **** perfect. Absolutely perfect. Blade runner was a disappointment, I liked Ghost In The Shell but that was an 8. This is an easy 11, it will be watched for decades and hopefully become more popular than Star wars. This is game of thrones in space.

My favorite part was the consistent yellow sandy look of the movie and the design of the buildings and starships as they are faithful even though many find them blocky and boring. There are technology that is not meant to be beautiful but functional, an 80s style vibe of heavy construction equipment not sleek starships. But there is magic, genetic editing, nukes, special armies, and so much more.

The style is called brutalist and it is brutal. It is also a favorite style of fascism, a la Nazis and the Italian dictator Mussolini.

Perfect. Absolutely perfect story.

At the start the characters can come across as a little flat, and there is a lot of terminology and lore to learn relatively quickly, but the payoffs for all this buildup are worth the initial grind. The universe of the film itself is intriguing, and its sense of atmosphere and tension grows more and more investing as the story progresses.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. DUNE REVIEW

I am an avowed DUNE-ophile as I have read all the books and seen every iteration of them. I am also a director and creator of scripted content working in the industry as we speak. I was interested to see how Denis Villeneuve would handle this iconic masterpiece. To say I was disappointed and saddened in what I saw is an understatement. Where the book is vivid, insightful, groundbreaking, engrossing and impactful, Villeneuve’s film is lackluster, plodding, bereft of emotion, stark, and muddled. Let’s begin with the sets. Villeneuve is a stylist, a director who uses his environments as a character. This obfuscates what I believe is his inability to tell engrossing original stories. By his own admission, Bladerunner 2049 was a flop. Arrival, adapted from a great book fell into confusion and over intellectualization in his hands and now with DUNE his inability to tell an engrossing, complete intense story comes into real focus. Villeneuve is a talented director in certain respects. But even here, his set pieces dwarf his actors and their acting, as if the characters are subordinate to the set pieces instead of integral to their relevance. Caladan is a stark, dreary, grayscale world where the only inhabitants are a sullen, forlorn group of royals who have no joy or meaning in their lives even though they have been tasked with overseeing the most important element in the universe; SPICE, the substance that binds all the houses of the Landsraad together is glossed over and never fully explained as the most important substance in the universe as it enables the space guild to fold space and without it the Imperial empire would collapse. Even David Lynch got this plot point right. The scene where the Atreide’s move from Caladan to Arrakis was particularly annoying as the real uses of Spice was never explained and the guild and its masters were never seen or even given one bit of critical story attention, leaving an audience who never read the book to wander in oblivion as one of the key tenets of Herbert’s books was completely overlooked. Arrakis is portrayed as an unpopulated Toy set with no people and a monochromatic sepia laden landscape, void of life and 10,000 years of history.
Even David Lynch’s uneven if interesting version of DUNE created characters that were memorable. The Harkonnen’s in Lynch’s world are brutal, vlolent, debauched and dangerous. Remember the heart plug scene, or the pustules, or the servants with their eyes and mouths sewn shut, indelible images that enhance the brutality of the Harkonnen’s. Nothing like that here. Here they are fixtures acting like they are dangerous and brutal, but they come across as characterizations of something that begs to be illuminated but never is and deprives the film of a credible frightening antagonist.
Relationships are muddy and ineffective. The intense love relationship between Duke Leto Atreides and his concubine Jessica is poorly dealt with, just glossed over and in this Villeneuve has made a critical error as their relationship forms the lynchpin and motivation of the entire storyline. Timothy Chalamee’s Paul is sullen, melancholy, and ineffective instead of the conflicted, intense, emotionally driven, passionate and confident Paul of the books. In fact, all of the acting is as bleak as the sets, lost in quiet introspective emotions when big broad character choices are called for, if nothing else, to match the import of the story they are telling. Only Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem break this monotony.
Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho is smirky and self-important and Momoa acts as if he doesn’t believe his own acting. All the characters are slightly drawn and ineffective and what’s more we have no idea who they really are, where they came from or what their motivations might be, which is frustrating and shows laziness on Villeneuve’s part. Understanding who these characters are and what their motivations are is essential to understand everything else in DUNE and at every turn they prove to be less than adequate to portray Herbert’s intensely drawn arcs. If we do not understand his characters motivations, there is no reason to go any further in watching this film.
Style over substance is what I’ve always thought about Villeneuve and his work and this version of DUNE proves just that. Not to mention that this is just HALF of the film, so now the audience has to shell out more money to watch a film that should’ve been a one-time event. Self-absorption and hubris are always a bad combination in anything, especially film making that costs over 200 million dollars. To really see what is so amazing about Herbert’s definitive Space Opera, take the time to read the book and let your own imagination create the world that Herbert intended.

It mostly stands on the strengh of its source material and Villeneuve's ability to not destroy it. But even so, it's a very long movie for the story it tries to tell and the pacing is quite a mess. Now, I haven't read the books but I did watch both the Lynch movie and the 2000 miniseries, so I am a bit familiar with the setting and story. And thank God for that, because otherwise I couldn't understand some of the politics of this world. This movie is 2 and a half hours long but going blind into it, you will know less about this universe then you would after watching the first 90 minutes episode of the miniseries, even though they cover mostly the same part of the story. Where is the Emperor? Where is the Navigator Guild? Sure, they are mentioned, but only pasingly and you can tell they are following the Farce Awakens formula of sequel bait questions. Instead of worldbuilding, we get pretentious visions of Zendaya in the desert. We get it, Paul has premonitions, no need for 5 long dream sequences to get that accross. On the acting side, it's quite solid, no surprise given the amount of talent involved. But the problem is the main lead, the entire movie depends on him and he doesn't do that great of a job. Part of the problem is the writting, as we don't get what character Paul really is. Sure, they show him as being naive, but mostly he comes off as edgy or emo and his big character moment at the end, where he has to take a man's life, just comes out of nowhere.

Now, visualy is probably where the movie is the strongest. The exterior shots look fantastic and Villeneuve really makes this seem like a distant planet. I can't say the same about the interiors, but it's mostly personal prefernce, as I think the set design in a movie about space aristocrats should look a bit more extravagant instead of the large empty rooms we keep seeing. Same goes for the costumes. Nothing too bad but they look more like something in a generic scifi video game.

Lastly, I would have probably give this a higher score if it wasn't for the horrible shoundtrack. Zimmer's score is an assault on your eardrums. And it doesn't matter if it's an action scene or a dramatic scene, his idea of music is to have a woman yelling very loudly in the background. And I don't know if it was just the theatre I watched this, but the sound is very loud.

All in all, Dunc is not a bad movie, just a bit of a dissapointment, as they really had a budget this time and could have been something special.

My only criticism is that the Zimmer sound track sounds too much like the sound track from The Lion King.
The movie felt like it only lasted 10 minutes.
The acting is very strong. The visuals are both stunning and realistic.
Watch Dune, it is the source for 50% of Star Wars.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. With over 18 months of hype and promising roles by Timothee and Zendaya, who’ve not yet proven themselves, but rather a statement about the type of character in this universe. It was good at best.

The visuals are great, but I still wouldn’t say on par with say bladerunner, but more, man of steel. It didn’t seem to create atmosphere as good as it should have.

My problem was…with just a little bit more effort it could have been more convincing. I heard a review talk about how it’s a futuristic Lord if the rings… after watching it you can see why but unlike LOTR it doesn’t have any thrills and spills that build the characters along the way. In fact there’s little character development… it’s all quite obviously leading down one path. There is one ‘oh damn, I didn’t expect that to happen’ but give or take it had a constant trajectory.

Yes, there’s these ongoing visions which try and show you what will happen, but in a twisty turny way… but they’re not that exciting. zendaya features a lot in the film in these visions, but actually you see 5 minutes of her and when you do, there’s not a lot of acting from her.

The bad guy is this fat floating grease ball… that is like a new take on jabba the hut. The bloke playing him is the same guy out of mamma mia. He’s just not scary enough… He comes out of black ouze and at one point looks like a giant snake or worm, there’s plenty of opportunity to knock our socks off. But nothing.

All the cast to be honest are good except for the bad guy and Zendaya.

They can easily make all this work in the next part, that’s the only saving grace.

Incredible set- and costume design. Incredible sound and music. I went to the movies with little expectation and no prior knowledge about the literary work that preceded the film. I think the movie works really well as something that presents a completely new and breathtakingly beautiful and dangerous world. The very scale and immersion is where it really stands out. With heavier focus on art direction and design, rather than cgi, I felt almost nostalgic for a time where blockbuster movies really felt like they wanted you to believe in the rules of a new fantasy. The cinematography, score, acting, and costume design is all top notch. The decision to change the opening from the novel to a battle sequence involving Fremen and Harkonnen followed by a introduction of Caladan does a better job of setting up what’s at stake and the complex political background. I still have concerns those who haven’t read the novel will be totally lost.

Oddly enough despite being 2.5 hours and over the first half of the first book, certain pivotal scenes felt very rushed. Major plot points involving the Duke Leto almost feel glossed over because there’s no time to reflect on the significance of what just happened or how it affects other characters before rushing on to the next part of the journey.

Lastly, there were a couple visual touches I found distracting. The body shield creating both blur and a color change upon contact took me out of the combat sequences and made it difficult to follow the fight. Also as a guy who appreciates a healthy amount of blood in his action movies to compliment the violence on screen, Dune’s combat felt very sterile to the point of bordering on PG end of the PG-13 spectrum instead of R. A must see in theaters for those who enjoyed the novel. I’d encourage fans of plot driven sci fi to also see in theaters, or sci fans interested in seeing a novel put to screen that had a huge historical impact on the genre. If you’re a fan of action heavy sci fi, you may find yourself bored. The kid next to me fell asleep and started snoring despite being in the front row of an 8:30 showing. Please go see in theaters not HBO Max so we can get a sequel!!

It contains the same setting-before-people - approach, the same kinky design for the Bene Gesserit, the same key scenes, the same foreshadowing in Paul`s dreams, the same fixation on sandworms etc.. But while Lynch made a Horror film out of Dune, adding gruesome and disturbing details, Villeneuve made a War Movie. All these intrigues and backstories just lead to some chaotic bloodbaths and annoying dialogues that sound as deep as in Conan The Barbarian. There are truly beautiful scenes, there is an unbelievable cast, everything is much more clearer than in Lynch`s film (doesn`t say much). The film really is an intense experience. But it is slow and joyless, it doesn`t do justice to Herbert`s utterly strange book, and Zimmer`s ethno-pomp makes my ears ring. A disappointment, especially after BLADE RUNNER 2049. Expand

It is beautiful world created by Villeneuve, who seem to really love original book and paid a lot of attention to make it really accurate and concise (which is really hard to do for the Dune book).
As a (possible) disadvantage I can mention sepia/grey filters, but personally I really like the final picture.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dune reminds me of a pretty present at Christmas time but inside is a mediocre gift. Here the scene is set during the 2 hour and 35 minute movie - a chosen one, a villain race, and planet of people thinking the chosen one is unworthy . This movie trope is so overplayed in Hollywood that the movie seems lackluster at face value of plot . The main villain is just that - a villain that shows nothing more Than being a static villain . The tech is impressive but over all all the action sequences end up being hand to hand swordplay “why no future weapons “ don’t know … this is a sword slashing movie set in the future without light sabers … but we kinda do have Jedi - but only choose to use their power when the film seems it necessary . Now I’m told this is going by the original book so my criticisms in the plot is that it’s pretty bland book idea - but I haven’t read it so something about all this addressing crucial stupid plot info could be fixed there. The film is bland and a boring spectacle . When there’s a point of intensity it gets washed away with instant help from friends and than off to the other part of the movie real quick because these characters choose to sacrifice their lives for these people and … well don’t think about it too much because they don’t explain enough even with the long run time you lose so much character development to try to establish a world that isn’t that hard to understand. I can fit all information about this world in one page … that won’t take 45 minutes of explaining to get through. They try to make this seem to the mild movie watcher that this is some kind of profound movie going experience which is far beyond mediocre that it becomes super mundane and predictable. Gotta love the pointless ending that puts our hero in the mix of fighting one vs one against some random person … woah excitement speed forth with all the drama of a boring over played hack sword movements we’ve seen done 900 other times in this film. At least creative film makers can take something that has been supremely over done in their own film and make it interesting in some kind of scale . Here it’s a snooze fest. The ending of this film seems dumb because here’s a character whom builds up his super power that he has from his mother who is also there but he ends up trading swords at the end when he could have just used his command power to fix all his problems … maybe the book explained why he couldn’t do this and mommy couldn’t either but here it just seems forgotten about . That is a good way of explaining this movie . Forget about things until it’s gonna be needed and than forget about it again so we can have more pointless drama that falls flat from ever being exciting or interesting. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Denis Villeneuve tried to simplify the story and complex universe of the Dune books. I can understand his decision. It is almost impossible to put on screen in two hours in all its complexity, the world created by Frank Herbert. He completely gave up certain characters, such as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, and chose not to introduce others directly, Emperor Padisah Shadam IV. I suspect that he keeps them for the second part, if there will be another second part, because it is impossible to take the narrative line to the end without them. It is possible that it will be a paractic, financial decision because this would have involved hiring two more important actors to appear in only two scenes. Possible.
I liked it because it managed to capture the atmosphere of the books. The costumes and visuals are gorgeous.
I didn't like that he didn't even briefly explain, through dialogue, fundamental notions for the Dune universe such as the Guild, the shield, the Butlerian Jihad, the total lack of computers in the universe, the orange Catholic Bible
That's all...

The scenes with Yueh are offensive to me as a Chinese, the way he practices his 'medical skills' is an imitation of Chinese scam healers and I was expecting he would recommend Paul to drink hot water afterwards. His Chinese dialogue is silly and did not say anything nice, the whole theatre was laughing uncomfortably at this. He had no good reason to do what he did, a Chinese would place his duty to his lord over a personal interest that was already obvious to not end well. You cannot expect Chinese to like a Chinese character if he just has a Chinese face and acts against the Chinese spirit.

With regards to consistency, shields and full plate armor do nothing to stop machetes, bombs, darts and anything else, but they do somehow protect people from poisoned air. If they have lasers that can carve through stone and tear up half the city trying to shoot down one shielded plane, and bombs that blow everything up shield or no shield, why all the dumb melee fighting? And if your troops can fight in closed formation and you have a defensible fortress, why rush out into the open like madmen?

Jessica is supposed to be some elite fighter with special mindcontrol powers, or what is she? Because she is portrayed as an emotionally unstable person that cannot control herself, which looks very inconsistent to me.

Fremen look like savages with no discipline or obedience. No details about their culture or beliefs, and the fight scene was without reason and did not look good. Why wear these watersuits during a fight, if the suit gets stabbed it leaks the water, which we saw in another scene. They would die in the desert with just a scratch, right?

Jessica gets a knife early on, but Fremen seem to have a belief they must cut themselves with the knife before putting it away, which was not done when Jessica has it given to her.

What is up with always bad writers and every one else from cgi/wardrobe/actors/camera do an amazing job?

Before diving down toBefore Star Wars and Game of Thrones were a big thing in today's sci-fi Hollywood lore, there's Dune and Denis Villeneuve's visual interpretation of Dune is a cinematographical epic that must be seen on the big screen. Before diving down to the point, Dune is impossible to translate on the big screen as there were attempts that other filmmakers tried to do with Dune but never worked. Acclaimed Director of Mulholland Drive, David Lynch, tried to faithfully adapt Frank Herbert's Dune, but messed up due to studio interference all thanks to Universal for messing him up. Then, there was Ridley Scott and his vision of Dune was never seen due to personal tragedy which had him abort the project because of it. And lastly, there's legendary cult Chilean filmmaker, Alejandro Jodorowsky, known for his trippy indie films such as El Topo and The Holy Mountain and his savage version of Dune was the best movie never made all thanks to studios being greedy for not trusting him from adapting the impossible as he completed everything by creating the look and officially casting the warriors (Pink Floyd, Mick Jagger, Orson Welles, David Carradine, Salvador Dali, Udo Kier, and a name of few..) before it was scrapped from us. Jodorowsky's Dune was way ahead of its time that most sci-fi films paid tribute to greatest movie never made and I highly recommend watching his documentary before seeing the big thing in theaters or at home. Now lets fast forward to the present, we finally gotten Denis Villeneuve's Dune, and his vision of Dune is massive, provocative, and violently superb in each and every way that this film presented. The scope of Arrakis is enormous and uncharted in a way that makes the action sequences in this epic adaptation so badass as the music by the legendary Hans Zimmer and the terrific instant Oscar-worthy winning cinematography by Grieg Fraser steps in as Paul Atreides with his badass father Duke Leto and the Fremen fight the Sardaukar aka House Horkennen from taking the spice away from the planet. There's no doubt that Denis Villeneuve gets the long awaited Oscar attention he deserves after adapting the impossible of how complex Frank Herbert wrote Dune and it is masterfully faithful from the book. The characters in this film are awesome and realistic, the visual effects and costume/production design are immaculate crafted, and the story is mad epic for part one. It can be a bit baffling for some that don't understand how complex Dune is or thinking it's wokey pokey, but the action sequences and narrative tension in this epic is what made Denis Villeneuve's Dune so unique compared to Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings franchise and Denis Villeneuve is the easily the best director working today and there's no doubt that Part Two must be made whenever he's ready to make it so we could see the glimpse of House Corrino and the feared Feyd Rautha in action. Unfortunately, this latest remake of Frank Herbert's "Dune" fails on that point on so many fronts. While the special effects and cinematography are indeed dazzling and the film can justifiably lay claim to yet another outstanding Hans Zimmer score, there's not much else here to grab viewer attention or evoke an emotional response. A big part of that has to do with the film's overlong, unengaging narrative, much of which is a long, cold, boring snooze and often tediously derivative in its vision, not to mention inherently and obviously incomplete. There are also casting issues aplenty, with some performers, like Timothee Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson, being placed into roles for which they're wholly unsuited, and with others, such as Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem and Charlotte Rampling, being woefully underused. This is an uncharacteristically underwhelming effort from director Denis Villeneuve, a filmmaker best known for stellar work on pictures like "Arrival" (2016) and "Blade Runner 2049" (2017). Regrettably, this is yet another example of a much-anticipated offering that falls flat and comes nowhere close to living up to its potential. Expand
