Maybe those haters are exactly the people who are offended for being called out because they consistently choose to believe snake oil salesmen instead of scientists. I mean, the conservative politician still talking about culture wars 5 minutes before total planetary annihilation is just spot on. This is exactly how I imagine it would go down. Expand

Really this show is a satire on the climate change debate. A few of the jokes land and its enjoyable enough but it's also smug and one sided. The writers are and not as clever as think they are and based on this I'm not sure they've even heard the other sides of the argument. It's just straw men all the way down. It's a comedy so some of this is fine, but overall self awareness is lacking. Expand

Tremendously watchable, in a good way. Social commentary at pretty much every level without being too preachy. Outrageous cast, great pacing and just a good all around movie. This one casts a wide net and delivers on most of it.

A film written and directed (before the pandemic) trying to make a parody about how the politicians and newscast react to an imminent extinction, it feels so familiar and sometimes nothing far from reality.
If you really want to enjoy this emotional trip, you have to tolerate absurd black comedy that this film handles, very stupid and unconscious. With that in mind, you'll be absorbed in this upsetting story and sense everything that the film wants to transmit, from heartwarming scenes to tense moments.
The performances were excellent, one of the best cast of the year, some of them taken advantage of 100% and some others completely replaceable due to its low participation. But undoubtedly, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence are reason enough to watch this film.

It still resulted in a good film with some solid humor, great performances, and a willingness to touch on many different (terrible) elements of society, from the awful political landscape and the lack of care for fellow humans, to more niche aspects like toxic positivity and awful echo-chambers promoted by the media and tech moguls. While it seems to be on the right track in the first half of the film, the second half is where it stumbles a bit, namely due to the thematic elements becoming far too heavy-handed and unrefined to land properly. It felt the need to really hammer home its messages to the audience so blatantly that the film's satire loses its deftness dramatically and plays like its audience is stupid. The film also is way too long and should've been trimmed by about 20-30 minutes. Adam McKay was so close to putting together a masterful satire about the current state of the world. While he hits home runs in certain respects, he strikes out in others, creating a good film that really missed out on its potential to be a great one. I'd probably give it somewhere between a 7 and an 8 in the end. Expand

I appreciated Don’t Look Up. Thankfully, I give very little weight to what movie critics have to say about any movie.

Don’t Look Up is supposed to be a work of satire but it felt more like a documentary. Of course, it was preceded by Idiocracy and others in the theme it tackles. It doesn’t present anything new, and I don’t think it’s trying to.

What it does is affirm the fear many people have that humanity is likely doomed if a large scale collective tragedy strikes us; at least in America. The Coronavirus pandemic has proven that so many people are incapable of prioritizing collectivism over self-centered individualism. A larger tragedy could reveal even more uglier truths about ourselves. Ultimately, I choose to believe that human wisdom and goodness will prevail, but that belief has never been challenged more than it has over the past several years.

Don’t Look Up is a tribute to that feeling of despair.

The story felt obvious in every way, to the point where I correctly guessed the ending only 20 minutes in. The editing is a bit odd in some areas, but is overall okay. The soundtrack is very nice, but is mixed poorly in some scenes. The visuals are very well done and I applaude the CG animators who worked on this. The acting was excellent, so it was a shame it was wasted on this writing. The commentary is oddly poignant, but it lacks punch due to the issues mentioned above. Expand

Acting also has no significant charm or weight except for the main characters Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. However, as a simple disaster comedy movie, the completeness is rather fine. Adam McKay's comedy directing and sense are alive, and the supporting actors may be wasteful, but the acting and Jennifer Lawrence were as good as the main characters DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. The problem is that the satire's method is obvious and shallow, but camera work and editing are colorful, and cross-editing with twisted time lines also reduced boredom as a fun factor. It can be said that the completeness as a genre movie is good. Expand

If our civilization should be judged by the quality of movies and tv series, we would totally deserve an extinction-level event. The topic of our collective stupidity in front of an imminent disaster is so important that a badly executed satire is probably not the best way to talk about it. The basic rules of directing are so broken that, if not for the cast, it would look like a mediocre student-grade movie. The soundtrack is always much louder than the actors' voices, making it hard to follow the dialogues, and it is terrible. Overall: forgettable and childish. Expand

Di Caprio, Lawrence, Streep, Rylance, Blanchett, Chalamet....wow. This is the film's biggest draw. Obviously, they are all excellent, so much so that I feel that they have exceeded the material at hand. This is McKay's attempt to marry two sides of his film making skill, hard nosed comedy and drama. On one hand, it is too blunt to be a satire. Having the message being bludgeoned to the audience, on the nose so too speak made the film's message redundant. However, kudos again for the casts, bringing their A-game to this effort. Expand

Folks suggested that now, in the midst of this pandemic, is not the time to be adding to the general dismay, depression, and physical and emotional trauma of people. I disagreed, saying that now is *precisely* the time to remind people of the looming environmental catastrophe, because in the current situation, it' s all too easy to forget about it and focus only on the immediate problems. Well, this movie does exactly what I'm suggesting. Yes, it could have been a better film in the hands of another director, but McKay did it in his own usual style, winking all the way, and perhaps lesseing it's potential impact, but the point is, nevertheless, made. So watch this, and take it's overly-telegraphed message to heart. Expand

The way it was able to capture modern society was so spot on. The general indifference to societal issues, our media driven culture, misinformation, the lack of respect shown to science, celebrity worship, social media dependence, failing of government institutions, and our obsession with billionaires and how we have allowed them to convince us that everything should be based on the profit motive. I think for most people this will be a really depressing film because it is a direct reflection on our society and our inability to act when it comes to the existential issues we face as society. I see critics and audiences panning this film but I have a feeling this movie will be remembered well with time. It’s going to be a big “I told you so,” moment. It’s definitely not a feel good movie. ThenTwo astronomers (Jennifer Lawrence & Leonardo DiCaprio) discover a comet headed toward Earth that will annihilate civilization. When they try to alert the President (Meryl Streep), she tosses it off for more pressing political matters. Then they go to the media (Cate Blanchett and Tyler Perry), who are too self-absorbed and surface to care. As the scientists try to alert the world and stop the calamity, the country spirals out of control, while the politicians look the other way (down). Social media only exacerbates matters. Yes, this conflict sounds familiar in today’s political climate and writer/director Adam McKay has masterfully made it entertaining. Like his last satire, The Big Short (my review) he uses all-out-performances, snappy editing, short scenes and clever comedy to sell his dismal message. The entire cast is great, but Mark Rylance was especially hilarious as the ultra-nerdy tech genius. Surprisingly, at 2:25 the movie flies by, which is a testament to McKay’s smart savvy skills. NOTE: Stay thru the credits for one final gag. Expand

And considering that both projects began filming in November 2020, it leads me to believe that their screenwriters shared notes.

Don't Look Up is another big film that completely wastes a remarkable cast.
And this one has even bigger names than House of Gucci.
The main problem with this story is that its satire is neither subtle, nor clever, and frankly not even relevant.

The parody, which is more than clearly an accurate reflection of the situation that the United States experienced under Donald Trump's administration when the pandemic began, and has carried ever since, is torn to shreds by its plot incompetence.

How many times has it been said that we need a meteorite to fall on us and make us extinct? That's the joke of this film.

Don't Look Up doesn't express anything interesting in that regard.
It comes to reinvent absolutely nothing, because this is a completely palpable reality, if you spend any time on any social media.
Its humor is simply idiotic because the characters are nothing more than uninteresting parodies, let alone comical.

You can easily tell the cast just wanted to have fun and get paid. I mean, it was recently revealed that Leonardo DiCaprio was paid 30 million dollars for this role, while Jennifer Lawrence got 25.
I seriously need a job where for just doing the bare minimum I get a 30 million dollars salary.

That's how disappointing this film is.

That it's being considered as an Academy award contender? That's low for the Academy.

I only hope that The Lost Daughter and The Hand of God will repair my disappointment when it comes to Netflix.

Scathing critique of the media's priorities and coverage of important issues that still finds a way to make you laugh.

Together, the two embark on a wide and extensive media tour to try and warn the world about its impending doom, but unfortunately the government, the president and her Chief-of-staff son (a very Trump-like Meryl Streep and Jonah Hill), and most people don't seem to care or want to listen to them. I had mixed feelings going into this one. The premise sounded absurd (which I know was kinda the point), but I still remained skeptical about if it would be able to be pulled off effectively. But with the amount of talent that's stacked to the wall here, from a-list actors such as DiCaprio and Lawrence, along with supporting players such as Hill, Streep, Cate Blanchett, Timothee Chalamet, etc.) along with star musicians such as Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi, you'd think even they'd be able to churn out something even halfway decent or worthwhile. But man oh man, that could NOT be further from the case! This farce of a film is an absolute cringefest from start to finish, is thoroughly unfunny and tries WAY too hard for its own good and seemingly resorts to characters screaming and shouting at each other whenever the jokes run out, and is just downright painful to sit through in so many ways. I absolutely could not care less how socially relevant this film is supposed to be, nor how spot on it is with its commentary on our ignorance of world issues and the political climate that seemingly does little to nothing to address or fix them. Had the film been much shorter, it could've made this mess of a film only slightly more tolerable, but at nearly two and a half hours, this film WAAAYYY overstays its welcome, not that it was welcome for very long, cause even at an hour and a half, I guarantee this film still would've been equally as grating on me, and the film's end and final act just added insult to injury with the whole ordeal. Overall, the bottom line is this: not only is this easily my worst film of the year, it's quite honestly one of THE worst films I've seen in years! It's not funny in the slightest, runs out of jokes (if I can even call them that) within the first half hour, and completely wastes its talented cast with a horrible, aimless, and obnoxious film that thinks it's so smug and slick. Well news flash: it's not. Expand
