It actually, properly articulates and illustrates the terribly unfortunate idiosyncrasies of our society - from the Politics to Ariana Grande. It's likely very fair to think that: "if Covid-19 was a massive comet hurtling towards the earth, this is what could happen". But - It is also hilarious, sad, chilling, and deeply troubling to watch. Probably one of the saddest and scariest movies of the year.

The movie boasts an incredible heavy weight ensemble cast and absolutely no one disappoints. Special mention goes to the amazing chemistry between many of the characters as they work fantastically well with each other: Blanchett-DiCaprio, Perry-Blanchett, Lawrence-Hill and cheers to Timothee Chalamet for stealing that scene at the end.

Admittedly, the movie sometimes try to be overly-styled (or especially artsy) which is totally unnecessary - but that doesn't detract from the overall movie itself.

Don't Look Up is a beauty. I was not expecting it to be profound but it was and I definitely do not regret watching it - I recommend it highly, it is a must watch.

The state of our union I suppose - sad as it is.

5 out of 10 is a perfectly forgettable film.

I've given this movie a 4 out of 10. For every moment where the satire is great, there is another moment where the satire is Wayan's Brothers bad. The worst offense is the run time. I paused the movie to use the restroom, thinking I'd been watching the movie for a hot minute and it should maybe only have 20 minutes or so left, just to see we still had an hour to go. Needless to say, I fast forwarded through the oddly placed, full-length music video. All-in-all, 4 out of 10. I don't plan to ever rewatch it and I probably wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

The first 2/3rds was note perfect. It made fun of people on both aisles; right wing politics, left wing media, technology, social media, reality TV, the general vapidity of people. The last 1/3rd was not as clever in its satire. It was more on-the-nose leftist, essentially saying that people on the right are missing something in their brains. Even the phrase "don't look up" doesn't really make sense -- obviously they believed the comet was coming, they just had a different plan to deal with it. I'm pretty cynical but the idea of left and right still being at odds when the comet becomes visible is too cynical even for me. Expand

I'm not sure who Meryl Streep was trying to be, but it didn't work, nor did Jonah Hill as her callous son and chief of staff. Perhaps the most annoying and most perplexing character was Peter Isherwell. Not sure who he was supposed to be either - a cross between Elon Musk and Carl Sagan perhaps? Whatever the case, the absurdity of mining the comet for precious minerals by breaking it up into bite size chunks and harvesting them from the Pacific Ocean would have made any astronomer apoplectic, but our good Dr. Mindy seems to take it all in stride, until he asks for peer review.

This is one of those movies you are supposed to laugh at but take seriously at the same time. The biggest question is why a comet movie when we know Leo and Adam wanted us to take global warming more seriously? Why not a string of natural disasters that lead to earth shattering consequences, but governments around the world remain oblivious to events? I guess that's a bit too close to reality. Leo and Adam want to have us imagine a more immediate pending doom.

But, the comet just doesn't work on any number of levels. Most people would be oblivious to it because you can't see it. We've had these warnings before and the comet manages to just miss and go hurtling off in space toward some other unsuspecting planet. Even if we had a 6-month warning, it is doubtful we could get enough rockets into space in time to thwart such a comet. It would be the end of the world as we know it, REM playing in the background.

So, we see astronomers made into nasty memes and internet sensations until they outgrow their purpose. Nothing really important is said in this film. It is on about the same level as Mike Judge's Idiocracy, but at least that movie was surprisingly prescient. Who would have believed back in 2006 that we would get President Donald Drumpf a short 10 years later? Judge didn't see us becoming that stupid for another 500 years.

Unfortunately, Netflix wants us to believe this film is important, so they are now offering podcasts to further pursue the theme at the beginning of the new year, "The Last Movie Ever Made." Well, I've had enough.

But when you consider everything else that makes up a film (plausibility of the facts that make up the plot and how the network of such facts reflects the real world; behavior of characters; staging of actors; etc.), it's a pretty good movie.
The true disaster is the review of the professional critics, which uses just one factor to determine the entire quality of the film. Since the biggest problem with the film was that it was obvious and not an implied message, it seems to me that critics demand a sense of elitism.
Again noting that subtlety is important, but the weight that critics have given to basically this single factor is clearly disproportionate.
A solid 7 - 7.5 describes the film well.

Well, actually, it was Netflix who dropped Don't Look Up in our stocking. With a cast filled with movie stars and an intriguing premise, it's no wonder Netflix gifted us this flick on Christmas, but were we naughty or nice? Here's whether Don't Look Up is actually a lump of coal.

Adam McKay has been in socio-political satire mode since The Big Short. He has gone back to that well for Don't Look Up but with a more ridiculous sensibility. In this film, a PhD student in astronomy, Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence), discovers a comet orbiting in the solar system. In analyzing her discovery, Diabiasky's professor, Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) calculates the trajectory of the comet and determines that it is on course to make direct impact with Earth. Because of the comet's size, impact will be a catastrophic event leading to extinction of all life on Earth. Dr. Mindy and Dibiasky embark on a mission to warn the people of the world of this impending devastating event. Along the way, they encounter the MAGA-esque President Janie Orlean (Meryl Streep), her dimwitted, sycophantic son/Chief of Staff, Jason (Jonah Hill), some airheaded news anchors (Cate Blanchett and Tyler Perry) and many others who refuse to believe the science and allow ultimate disaster to continue hurtling towards Earth. Hijinks ensue?

Don't Look Up is like a mix between Armageddon and Idiocracy, but never reaches the mindless spectacle of the former nor the sharp foresight of the latter. Adam McKay's script has turned the percolating concern about climate change and the willful ignorance around the COVID-19 pandemic into this obvious farce about intergalactic doom. All the societal players are lampooned: politicians, news media, scientists and tech billionaires. The problem is that there's nothing smart about any of what's being said or the comedy that's supposedly depicted in the situation. There have been better and funnier critiques in other venues. In fact, it's just frustrating and sad. This approximation of our current socio-political climate is not funny, entertaining or enlightening. There's no insight in reflecting what many in American society already know about our institution. What's worse is that McKay provides no potential solutions. We're just headed for disaster, so just accept it, I guess.

Unfortunately, while this film features a large cast including DiCaprio, Streep, Blanchett, Lawrence, Hill, Perry, with cameos by Ariana Grande, Kid Cudi, Timothy Chalamet, and more, the star power cannot save or distract from what's otherwise deeply depressing.

If you are looking to escape from the bleakness of the world, then Don't Look Up will not likely provide that respite. If you want to see a star-studded socio-political satire with echoes of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of willful ignorance, then you may enjoy this movie. Unfortunately, Adam McKay did not bring the comedy nor the insight necessary to make his agenda in this movie worth the 2-hour-plus runtimes. Since this film is on Netflix and, even though it is depressing and stress-inducing, it is not boring, but to be safe just grab a handful of popcorn while giving Don't Look Up a glance.

However, I think these critics give too much credit to humanity in the first place. The characters surrounding the protagonists are one-dimensional, predictable, and not quite as satisfying a watch as , say, a Network (1976)/ Chayefsky type film, but again, why is "preserving cinema" necessarily Adam McKay's objective?

Is that the point of movies? To just preserve this standard of "good writing", "good storytelling" etc.? Cause It's been done.

Adam McKay used the medium to say "Hey **** wake the **** up".

It's not rocket science. 10/10

You're not going to cancel Netflix over a single movie, and they don't release objective viewership data, so now, everything is wonderful. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Most reviews say "its not a comedy" "its a bad comedy" or "the jokes are kinda weird in a apocaliptic movie" and... thats the point, is only a comedy for people who already know everything that happens in the real world, how this is... way too close, and decide to deal with it by joking while trying to do something about it cause we are too weak to deal with it directly. I love how all characters are at least bydimensionals, having literally all deniers that moment of "hey, i believe in my politics, but im being treated as a fool"(which they are)"So **** this guys" is good, really cool, how it doesnt go the really easy way of "those are all dumb people and we the bad guys" it does say something new? Probably not, no idea, im not a critic, but it says the right things the right way and talks about something that most mainstream movies (probably there are a lot that dont, but again, idk) just ignore and say "If humanity is in danger everyone will sudently agree, usa will be the best nation, help everyone and solve the problems while the rest just sit down and all america agrees cause saving the planet is easy." Also it does kinda help to avoid the actual problem? Maybe, dont think so, but maybe someone will ignore the actual problems in the actual world, i feel most people will do the oposite and is cool to see this movies, even if they are the 232343 movie of saying the same thing (which i dont think they are, but again again, idk) Also i really liked it so im putting it even high than i think others with my same points would put it is not a ten because idk if im just very hyped. It shines a light on the role of government, companies (including media), and their relation to society. It also conveys an important message directed towards people who believe in recent conspiratorial theories. For someone already inside the bubble, the film story might be as obvious as it might be dull. There is a confounded tension between each half (lengthwise) of the movie: the first one has a more cringe comedy touch, while the second gets a more down-to-earth tone. Its first act is a terrible introduction to the story, as the dialogues instead of being cringe-worthy are just far-fetched. The cast performed honorably, but the screenplay is just not too appealing. Expand

"Don't Look Up" delivers in it's star studded cast and fair amount of quirky, dark, and sometimes hilariously offensive caricatures of how our modern dystopia handles a world threatening comet. Leonardo Dicaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, and an ever witty Meryl Streep deliver the talent and most of the laughs when they do come, which is thankfully more often than not. That's in thanks primarily to Adam McKay's punchy dialogue and solid work in the editing room. It's a shame the film gets bogged down by a few too many dumb jokes, genre tropes, and a disastrous, and cringe inducing performances by Jonah Hill and Ariana Grande. That and the film could have definitely been streamlined and simplified by cutting a solid twenty minutes from it's lengthy 2hr and 18min runtime. Still, "Don't Look Up" achieves what it set out to accomplish. Some will laugh. Some will cringe. Some will be nonplussed. Expand

In this day and age, a large population of the world does not believe what they see, and abhor science, logic and rational thinking. Instead, a thin privileged slice of humanity is immune to empathy for those less fortunate and insists on a steady diet of sweet coated lies. It seems a large chunk of us simply lack the digestive system to absorb difficult truths. But then again mass rejection of facts runs rampant all over the world. Dicaprio and Lawrence give outstanding performances as sincere and dedicated scientists, absolutely dumbstruck by the apathy and arrogance of figures in authority. The rest of the heavy-hitting cast delivers strong performances too, especially Hill, Streep and Blanchet, as is expected. This movie is a wake-up call for society. Whether it is a planet threatening virus or comet, all of us need to get back to rational thinking, logical analysis and open-mindedness. Not everything is a conspiracy, use your common sense, hopefully, some is remaining. Expand

It may target low hanging fruit at times (a nepotistic and moronic president and her son who has the hots for her... - sounds somewhat familiar?, Peter Isherwell being an amalgamation of Tim Cook and Elon Musk.., Bash - Apple...) but it does a decent job at showing how passive and aloof people are in regards to current issues. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first 30 minutes set up something that really could’ve been an amazing movie, but it loses its focus after that. Yes, it’s is a satire, but a movie with such a promising cast lost all seriousness the moment they try to make a statement that has been regurgitated 30 times across multiple titles. That being said, the acting by the main cast is really well done, but the script fails to deliver any sort of depth for the characters. What you see in the first half an hour doesn’t change for the rest of the film.

The CGI in the movie is below average for something that came out in 2021. The random clipping to groups of people watching a news broadcast loses it’s touch after the first few times it’s introduced, more or less the ~50 times the movie uses this. It feels more redundant than anything to show random scenes of wildlife and cell phone ads in the middle of the monologues given. The cinematography felt lazy and uninspired, but even more so felt disorganized. Very little timespan is given throughout the movie, and before you know it you went from 6 months until Comet destroys the planet to just a few weeks.

The real moment the movie lost me was with Jonah Hills acting outside of their first real encounter. Everyone else in the main cast did a really good job of bringing the serious undertones into play, but Jonah Hills awkward **** comedy relief really just took away from the movie as a whole.

In summary, the movie falls flat after it barely gets on its feet due to the gradual turn from “apocalyptic drama” to “satirical comedy”. The only satisfying part of the movie is the inevitable destruction at the end after being spoon fed GREED IS BAD, DESTROY BIG BUSINESSES for the last hour or so. That, along with Leonardo DiCaprio’s sudden change of heart in his final interview. Honestly a shame since the first bit of the movie makes it out to be something a lot more interesting. Would not watch again nor recommend to anyone.

If you can't see and relate of how much this is similar to the momentary pandemic situation, politics, money, power, etc., you certainly have a very deep sleep!

Most people just don't get it and as they are as well pretty much "involved" in their own live and circumstances, this movie doesn't fit, somehow, of course. Allot of those so called critics and "user" reviews probably just rate this bad to avoid its presence in the mainstream. They don't want others to maybe light up some not-so-good controversal thoughts about what's going on on this planet, in every country and inside allot of bodies this moment.

This giant comet heads towards earth right now and we are somewhere in the middle of this movie. I recommend this to any self-thinking and self-reflecting human being, if you allready see what's going on you will LOVE this movie and if not, you might wake up or remain in hybernation for the rest of your life, speaking of this, actual might be way shorter people assume those days...

This bitingly cynical yet consistently hilarious dark comedy about the responses of various corners of officialdom to the impending impact of a planet-killing comet poignantly illustrates the wrong-headed priority that contemporary authorities place on self-serving expediency rather than genuine leadership in the face of certain doom. As a metaphor for the current state of American culture, the film is undeniably more than a little over the top, but, given the nature of the message, it also couldn't have been anything less in order to make its point, especially to a society that has become increasingly ignorant and complacent to pay attention to what's really going on around it. The stellar cast is superb across the board, playing their parts near perfectly for each and every character. But what's most impressive is how genuinely funny this offering is throughout, never succumbing to lulls, pacing issues or jokes that fail to land, something few comedies can successfully pull off these days. Indeed, in a year that has been characterized by a wealth of lame releases that have been undeservedly touted for their alleged brilliance, it's truly refreshing to see one that finally lives up to such qualities -- even if many of those writing about it can't see that for themselves, about which all I can say is, "I rest my case." Amazingly fun! Most of the critics are just too full of themselves when trying to dissect themes approached in this movie (and some even have to make a comment about how inappropriate comparisons to global warming are!) and honestly it shows.

Great movie. The MAGA's and covidiots are going to hate it which makes it a actually an 11 out of 10.

Maybe not quite as solid as Greenland but emotionally moving in others ways. It dealt with mass cynical reaction - ie people casting aspersions on the science - kinda like Trump conspiracy theories and fake news. This theme resonated, especially the ending, where the main cast simply had dinner which made
me cry which made my daughter laugh but this was a solid disaster movie with a nice twist - and Leo had some great scenes of emotion - funny post credit scene too

Many people think this will be a bad film just because they hired a big cast like Leo, JLaw, Ariana, Timothee Chalamet, Cate Blanchett, etc. However I may say that the storyline is amazing and the script is nicely written. Very realistic. I hate to say but this might be the actual response of the human being if ever this comes true which let's hope not. SUPER RECOMMEND this movie. Must be watched by each human being in the world. Expand
