This film is yet another reminder to me of how very little "critic's" opinions ought to matter, or are actually worth in terms of steering anyone toward second-guessing their viewing choices.

While it starts out somewhat slowly, it surprisingly grows and develops into a poignant picture of humanity in all its hilarity and horribleness.

So good, I laughed, I cried, I loved it!

Don't get it. Bad user reviews are easier to understand as they appear to come from the same crowd that is satirized in the movie. But the critics? Don't get it. Ignore them. This is the best movie of 2021, in my opinion. The fact that it appears on Netflix, rather than theatres, should not be held against it. The more people who see this film the better. It is that important. Expand

Adam McKay has managed to create a funny, satirical disaster movie that is the most accurate depiction of what would happen if today's world was faced with the 100% chance of an asteroid destroying earth. The reaction to the world's imminentAdam McKay has managed to create a funny, satirical disaster movie that is the most accurate depiction of what would happen if today's world was faced with the 100% chance of an asteroid destroying earth. The reaction to the world's imminent end is both hilarious and terrifying. Don't Look Up may not be for everyone but I loved it.

Astronomers Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) and Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) make the terrifying discovery that a comet is heading straight for earth and without immediate action this "planet killer" will end life as they know it in 6 months. After a dissatisfying meeting with President Meryl Streep the two astronomers go on a media tour to warn the world of their discovery. They are left further shocked when the entire population doesn't seem to care that an asteroid is hurtling towards earth.

If I could sum up Don't Look Up in one word it would be chaotic. Very much drawing a lot of inspiration from real life events you're left feeling like "oh sh!t, this is scarily close to how we'd react to an incoming asteroid, we really are all gonna die." It's a darkly funny take on a genre that's been done again and again. Rather than a disaster movie with "insert generic end of the world catastrophe here" that can only be saved by a rugged Gerard Butler type action hero, Don't Look Up sets up the end of the world scenario and then focuses on how humans as a whole react or rather don't react. Also taking in the impact of social media, corrupt politicians and billionaires looking to seize on the opportunity. Along with Adam McKay's witty script you also has a wonderful star studded cast, so what's not to love? After the last two years I needed a good laugh and Don't Look Up certainly did the trick.

What more do I need to say? If you haven't already taken the time over the Christmas break to watch Don't Look Up then be sure to check it out. It might be a little dragged out in the beginning but I assure you it's worth the wait. Recommended for all those film buffs who love a good disaster movie.

Don't Look Up is one of my favourite movies of the year. It's a painfully accurate and sad dissection of our world today and how the agenda of those in power impacts us.

McKay manages to balance levity with tragedy, keeping the story fun and comedic while still invoking such stress and frustration. This ensemble of A-list stars do not disappoint, and all do a fantastic job elevating this material. Leonardo DiCaprio is, once again, a standout, and gives one of my favourite performances of the year.

It definitely isn't clever or subtle, and not all of the technical choices worked for me, but I still thoroughly enjoyed myself with this one.

If you watch the film you notice the parallels to the present day more and more from minute to minute (especially to the climate crisis, but in some ways the film also fits the pandemic) and therefore a funny film also creates other feelings such as sadness or anger to wake up.

It is about an imminent end of the world, which is accepted with seeing eyes due to lower motives. In addition, there are various real-time problems, as well as the power of social media, the falling apart of truths, facts are no longer evidence, etc.

The film shows the United States in particular the past few years, which culminated in a catastrophic presidency. The connection to the real world works extremely well for me and was not too artificial for me, rather it blended in well with the scenery.
Only occasionally were the stylistic devices of popping pictures or video overlays cut too much and too quickly for me.

Also, strange camera settings were chosen over and over again, which were not always sensible for me or whose message I probably did not understand.

Apart from that, the cast was brutal and was able to convince in many cases: DiCaprio works perfectly for me, Cate Blanchett was one of the best, Meryl Streep and Jonah Hill were "amusing" most of the time (you always had a bit of "anger") "in my stomach), Chris Evans was absolutely world-class ..... amazing .... I only liked Jennifer Lawrence partially, it was sometimes too much for me because I couldn't believe her. The bash dude really pissed me off (he should too), but it wasn’t fun at all, it was just annoying. Timothee Chalamet could have been cut away and clearly shortened at this point.

Overall, the film was shot strangely, but in a certain way very cleverly written and put together, unfortunately a bit too long. I've switched off briefly one or the other time, but in the end it's pretty consistent.

7/10 drones.

This is a satire on real life things that some people just don't want to acknowledge. Your going to see a lot of bad reviews for trolling reasons, ignore them. The way it was able to capture modern society was so spot on. The general indifference to societal issues, our media driven culture, misinformation, the lack of respect shown to science, celebrity worship, social media dependence, failing of government institutions, and our obsession with billionaires and how we have allowed them to convince us that everything should be based on the profit motive. I think for most people this will be a really depressing film because it is a direct reflection on our society and our inability to act when it comes to the existential issues we face as society. I see critics and audiences panning this film but I have a feeling this movie will be remembered well with time. It’s going to be a big “I told you so,” moment. It’s definitely not a feel good movie. It still resulted in a good film with some solid humor, great performances, and a willingness to touch on many different (terrible) elements of society, from the awful political landscape and the lack of care for fellow humans, to more niche aspects like toxic positivity and awful echo-chambers promoted by the media and tech moguls. While it seems to be on the right track in the first half of the film, the second half is where it stumbles a bit, namely due to the thematic elements becoming far too heavy-handed and unrefined to land properly. It felt the need to really hammer home its messages to the audience so blatantly that the film's satire loses its deftness dramatically and plays like its audience is stupid. The film also is way too long and should've been trimmed by about 20-30 minutes. Adam McKay was so close to putting together a masterful satire about the current state of the world. While he hits home runs in certain respects, he strikes out in others, creating a good film that really missed out on its potential to be a great one. I'd probably give it somewhere between a 7 and an 8 in the end. Expand

I appreciated Don’t Look Up. Thankfully, I give very little weight to what movie critics have to say about any movie.

Don’t Look Up is supposed to be a work of satire but it felt more like a documentary. Of course, it was preceded by Idiocracy and others in the theme it tackles. It doesn’t present anything new, and I don’t think it’s trying to.

What it does is affirm the fear many people have that humanity is likely doomed if a large scale collective tragedy strikes us; at least in America. The Coronavirus pandemic has proven that so many people are incapable of prioritizing collectivism over self-centered individualism. A larger tragedy could reveal even more uglier truths about ourselves. Ultimately, I choose to believe that human wisdom and goodness will prevail, but that belief has never been challenged more than it has over the past several years.

Don’t Look Up is a tribute to that feeling of despair.

Very realistic. I hate to say but this might be the actual response of the human being if ever this comes true which let's hope not. SUPER RECOMMEND this movie. Di Caprio, Lawrence, Streep, Rylance, Blanchett, Chalamet....wow. This is the film's biggest draw. Obviously, they are all excellent, so much so that I feel that they have exceeded the material at hand. This is McKay's attempt to marry two sides of his film making skill, hard nosed comedy and drama. On one hand, it is too blunt to be a satire. Having the message being bludgeoned to the audience, on the nose so too speak made the film's message redundant. However, kudos again for the casts, bringing their A-game to this effort. Expand

If you can't see and relate of how much this is similar to the momentary pandemic situation, politics, money, power, etc., you certainly have a very deep sleep!

Most people just don't get it and as they are as well pretty much "involved" in their own live and circumstances, this movie doesn't fit, somehow, of course. Allot of those so called critics and "user" reviews probably just rate this bad to avoid its presence in the mainstream. They don't want others to maybe light up some not-so-good controversal thoughts about what's going on on this planet, in every country and inside allot of bodies this moment.

This giant comet heads towards earth right now and we are somewhere in the middle of this movie. I recommend this to any self-thinking and self-reflecting human being, if you allready see what's going on you will LOVE this movie and if not, you might wake up or remain in hybernation for the rest of your life, speaking of this, actual might be way shorter people assume those days...

A film written and directed (before the pandemic) trying to make a parody about how the politicians and newscast react to an imminent extinction, it feels so familiar and sometimes nothing far from reality.
If you really want to enjoy this emotional trip, you have to tolerate absurd black comedy that this film handles, very stupid and unconscious. With that in mind, you'll be absorbed in this upsetting story and sense everything that the film wants to transmit, from heartwarming scenes to tense moments.
The performances were excellent, one of the best cast of the year, some of them taken advantage of 100% and some others completely replaceable due to its low participation. But undoubtedly, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence are reason enough to watch this film.

However, I think these critics give too much credit to humanity in the first place. The characters surrounding the protagonists are one-dimensional, predictable, and not quite as satisfying a watch as , say, a Network (1976)/ Chayefsky type film, but again, why is "preserving cinema" necessarily Adam McKay's objective?

Is that the point of movies? To just preserve this standard of "good writing", "good storytelling" etc.? Cause It's been done.

Adam McKay used the medium to say "Hey **** wake the **** up".

Folks suggested that now, in the midst of this pandemic, is not the time to be adding to the general dismay, depression, and physical and emotional trauma of people. I disagreed, saying that now is *precisely* the time to remind people of the looming environmental catastrophe, because in the current situation, it' s all too easy to forget about it and focus only on the immediate problems. Well, this movie does exactly what I'm suggesting. Yes, it could have been a better film in the hands of another director, but McKay did it in his own usual style, winking all the way, and perhaps lesseing it's potential impact, but the point is, nevertheless, made. So watch this, and take it's overly-telegraphed message to heart. Expand

Clever, and anxiety-inducing — but not necessarily funny, save for Jonah Hill

But when you consider everything else that makes up a film (plausibility of the facts that make up the plot and how the network of such facts reflects the real world; behavior of characters; staging of actors; etc.), it's a pretty good movie.
The true disaster is the review of the professional critics, which uses just one factor to determine the entire quality of the film. Since the biggest problem with the film was that it was obvious and not an implied message, it seems to me that critics demand a sense of elitism.
Again noting that subtlety is important, but the weight that critics have given to basically this single factor is clearly disproportionate.
A solid 7 - 7.5 describes the film well.

"Don't Look Up" delivers in it's star studded cast and fair amount of quirky, dark, and sometimes hilariously offensive caricatures of how our modern dystopia handles a world threatening comet. Leonardo Dicaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, and an ever witty Meryl Streep deliver the talent and most of the laughs when they do come, which is thankfully more often than not. That's in thanks primarily to Adam McKay's punchy dialogue and solid work in the editing room. It's a shame the film gets bogged down by a few too many dumb jokes, genre tropes, and a disastrous, and cringe inducing performances by Jonah Hill and Ariana Grande. That and the film could have definitely been streamlined and simplified by cutting a solid twenty minutes from it's lengthy 2hr and 18min runtime. Still, "Don't Look Up" achieves what it set out to accomplish. Some will laugh. Some will cringe. Some will be nonplussed. Expand

The acting is great, with one or two exceptions maybe, the effects are good. It may target low hanging fruit at times (a nepotistic and moronic president and her son who has the hots for her... - sounds somewhat familiar?, Peter Isherwell being an amalgamation of Tim Cook and Elon Musk.., Bash - Apple...) but it does a decent job at showing how passive and aloof people are in regards to current issues. It lacks sublety but that's what also made it entertaining in it's own way. Highly recommended but I can see why certain people would be triggered by it. Expand

It actually, properly articulates and illustrates the terribly unfortunate idiosyncrasies of our society - from the Politics to Ariana Grande. It's likely very fair to think that: "if Covid-19 was a massive comet hurtling towards the earth, this is what could happen". But - It is also hilarious, sad, chilling, and deeply troubling to watch. Probably one of the saddest and scariest movies of the year.

The movie boasts an incredible heavy weight ensemble cast and absolutely no one disappoints. Special mention goes to the amazing chemistry between many of the characters as they work fantastically well with each other: Blanchett-DiCaprio, Perry-Blanchett, Lawrence-Hill and cheers to Timothee Chalamet for stealing that scene at the end.

Admittedly, the movie sometimes try to be overly-styled (or especially artsy) which is totally unnecessary - but that doesn't detract from the overall movie itself.

Don't Look Up is a beauty. I was not expecting it to be profound but it was and I definitely do not regret watching it - I recommend it highly, it is a must watch.
