This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Decent satire on **** up world we live in today. Not sure why people hate it unless it touches some nerve of inconvenient truth how idiotic our civilisation has become. It is absurd and so are we. No more absurd than watching the news.

It seriously true and leaves tragic feeling by the end of how totally **** up. we became as species.

Amazingly fun! Most of the critics are just too full of themselves when trying to dissect themes approached in this movie (and some even have to make a comment about how inappropriate comparisons to global warming are!) and honestly it shows.

ThenTwo astronomers (Jennifer Lawrence & Leonardo DiCaprio) discover a comet headed toward Earth that will annihilate civilization. When they try to alert the President (Meryl Streep), she tosses it off for more pressing political matters. Then they go to the media (Cate Blanchett and Tyler Perry), who are too self-absorbed and surface to care. As the scientists try to alert the world and stop the calamity, the country spirals out of control, while the politicians look the other way (down). Social media only exacerbates matters. Yes, this conflict sounds familiar in today’s political climate and writer/director Adam McKay has masterfully made it entertaining. Like his last satire, The Big Short (my review) he uses all-out-performances, snappy editing, short scenes and clever comedy to sell his dismal message. The entire cast is great, but Mark Rylance was especially hilarious as the ultra-nerdy tech genius. Surprisingly, at 2:25 the movie flies by, which is a testament to McKay’s smart savvy skills. NOTE: Stay thru the credits for one final gag. Expand

In this day and age, a large population of the world does not believe what they see, and abhor science, logic and rational thinking. Instead, a thin privileged slice of humanity is immune to empathy for those less fortunate and insists on a steady diet of sweet coated lies. It seems a large chunk of us simply lack the digestive system to absorb difficult truths. But then again mass rejection of facts runs rampant all over the world. Dicaprio and Lawrence give outstanding performances as sincere and dedicated scientists, absolutely dumbstruck by the apathy and arrogance of figures in authority. The rest of the heavy-hitting cast delivers strong performances too, especially Hill, Streep and Blanchet, as is expected. This movie is a wake-up call for society. Whether it is a planet threatening virus or comet, all of us need to get back to rational thinking, logical analysis and open-mindedness. Not everything is a conspiracy, use your common sense, hopefully, some is remaining. Expand

It would be a mistake to assume the purpose of Don’t Look Up is to further divide people along political lines. The film avoids using divisive labels and instead takes aim the entire corrupt system. Adam McCay holds nothing back in his satirical yet scathing critique of the reality we are living in. From the mainstream media to the political establishment, nobody is safe from the real-world criticisms this film is trying to convey and I loved every minute of it. No other film has so explicitly demonstrated the absurd ways that capital interests are able to control the levers of power in our society to serve their own interests at the detriment of everyone else. The cast were incredible and had me cracking up from start to finish. My only criticism was with the last minute of the film that took a jarring turn from non-fictional territory to total sci-fi. I think the movie would have been better off without that final scene. But I think it’s important to note that despite the film’s futile narrative and the ways it illustrates mankind’s inability to get out of its own way, Don’t Look Up still left me feeling like there is hope for us. After all, comedy is the medicine we take to cope with reality. Expand

Up there with Dr. Strangelove and In the Loop, as top film satires. I predict critics, (like Dargis, Simms, and Morgenstern) will eat their hats over this one, eventually. Their misplaced criticisms could be aimed at Strangelove just as well, or ill (what is more "anguished", Simms, "turns almost everyone into nincompoops", Morgenstern, "can't compete with horrors of real world, Chang, "deeply anguished comedy freak out", Dargis, "self-righteous superiority", Hornaday, than Dr. Strangelove?) I dare say all of these critics have DS in their pantheons of film satire. For me, their bludgeoning of DLU "tends to limit their entertainment value", to paraphrase one of our "august" critics. This bitingly cynical yet consistently hilarious dark comedy about the responses of various corners of officialdom to the impending impact of a planet-killing comet poignantly illustrates the wrong-headed priority that contemporary authorities place on self-serving expediency rather than genuine leadership in the face of certain doom. As a metaphor for the current state of American culture, the film is undeniably more than a little over the top, but, given the nature of the message, it also couldn't have been anything less in order to make its point, especially to a society that has become increasingly ignorant and complacent to pay attention to what's really going on around it. The stellar cast is superb across the board, playing their parts near perfectly for each and every character. But what's most impressive is how genuinely funny this offering is throughout, never succumbing to lulls, pacing issues or jokes that fail to land, something few comedies can successfully pull off these days. Indeed, in a year that has been characterized by a wealth of lame releases that have been undeservedly touted for their alleged brilliance, it's truly refreshing to see one that finally lives up to such qualities -- even if many of those writing about it can't see that for themselves, about which all I can say is, "I rest my case." I would consider this one of the best films of the year. Ignore the bad reviews from those who would rather listen to anyone other then actual climate scientists (most republicans/corporate funded media). The scientific consensus is that our grand-children could face extinction from climate /ecological collapse if we don't act NOW. With build back better getting grounded/dismantled in the same way the initial rockets sent to stop the comet did it is as pressing of a message as ever. Expand

That is why this stings so well, and is quite believable despite the satire. Leftists will love it, but I would imagine conservatives would be somewhere between indifferent...to outright animosity. (As the film is very critical of conservatives, but especially of the media and politicans.) As a film its a bit long, and can feel a bit repetitive during one montage about halfway in, but once it hits its stride to continues on to the climax quite well. Consistently funny bits throughout, and likely a satire classic, one of the best I have ever seen. Anyone who is not A. rich or B.a conservative will likely enjoy it, and its worth watching no matter what ones political affiliation. Its a very interesting story, with an amazing cast, a good amount of humor, and hits at real drama as well as it goes along. Pretty much: this film shows better than any film, what it feels like to be a Bernie Sanders supporters, or a climate activist in our wayward political times. So even conservatives..if they want to understand what that feels like, should watch this film, and can likely learn something. I would consider it a must watch in these present times, and a satire classic. Expand

The brick approach is obviously the Trump like president, vacuous, interested in self importance and the aggrandisement of family. To be fair this is all true of the real world Trump, so any caricature is hardly going to be subtle. The flip side is a more subtle criticism of the nature of modern society and media.
Some have assumed references towards climate change and/or the Covid pandemic, but to me the critique felt much broader, where the ridiculously elevated importance of celebrity triviality in social media and the competing, desperate drive of conventional media to remain relevant has become more important than reporting anything of use or value, or indeed the truth.
Overall, despite some bumpy moments this was a hugely enjoyable film with an excellent social commentary and some very subtle humour. I've rated it higher than I would have (probably more like an 8) because, ironically, there are some who don't believe in censorship but will still apparently give silly scores to films whose message they consider too liberal.

This movie will get a very split audience. Critics will hate it, but i loved it. Even if you dislike this movie you will somehow agree with it.
The point that the main subject of the movie is an asteroid on its way to obliterate earth is one thing.
But what it really is rubbing hardest again is actually human intelligence. It is a black, head-on satire on modern society that we live in today, and you know it is not very far of the mark. Human beings have become so estranged in social media and self-publicity that any major world event will be ridiculed.
We saw it when Covid emerged. No one cared until it was on our doorstep.
I had great laughs trough out this film. Highly enjoyed this dark comedy with good performances from most of the cast. Shame it got panned. I think it is the most significant movie in a long time regarding us people as a "intelligent" species.

The last 1/3rd was not as clever in its satire. It was more on-the-nose leftist, essentially saying that people on the right are missing something in their brains. Even the phrase "don't look up" doesn't really make sense -- obviously they believed the comet was coming, they just had a different plan to deal with it. This is how intelligent and good satire is done. The movie, using a fictional scenario, holds up a mirror to western society in general and i think US society in particular, and my guess is that the very negative reviews of many of the professional media critics come a lot from people butthurt that their own deeply problematic flaws have been called out and exposed. What we see in the movie is exacly what we see in real life when we observe our society reactions to climate change, to COVID, and other crisis. Our society, from the elites (which are the most at fault but the problem isnt just them) to the ordinary social media users is prisoner of a culture of shallowness, shortshightedness, idiocy and self destructive greed. This movie has by some been called a spiritual successor of Dr. Strangelove and Idiocracy, i wholeheartedly agree. It is the mirror showing us our true face, and many of us who can't bare too look at it instead of facing the mirror choose to throw it away and, proving btw thepoint of the movie, don't look up. The weakest part (for me) was the director's point of view being transparently visible; whether I agree, disagree, or am indifferent, because of politicization everywhere, I couldn't help but see some of the themes having a political charge. The themes might be judged differently simply because you can clearly see the director's words in multiple scenes (while in The Big Short, the message was less transparent despite being as biting). The strongest part was the sadness and emotional gravity of watching humankind squander our own existence. I didn't laugh once during the movie--it hit a little too close for me--yet I recommend it with a caveat that it might only be preaching to the choir. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I straight up enjoyed Don't Look Up. Overall the movie has this see-saw of tonality, where it starts off with a very serious concept, slowly pushes down into a canyon of comedy, only swing back up into a peak of seriousness. The tonal shift caused a bit of uncertainty in what to expect, though I believe the shift upwards was much easier to digest than the initial shift.

The acting was fantastic overall, Leo and Jennifer Lawrence played the straight role well, Kid Cudi and Ariana's bits provided comedic relief and social satire, and the absolute absurdity of Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, and Ron Pearlman were fantastic absurdist satire. With a cast like this, I'm not surprised with the quality of the acting, it's an A++ list.

More than the acting, the movie has a good sense of cinematography. The nature reels were gorgeous, and at times impactful to the overall message.

I can see why the story is going to piss people off. It's heavy satire. There's nothing subtle about it, even coming off as a caricature more often than not. I don't think the director had intentions of this being a deep movie, it's an absurdist dramedy satire, and I think that other than some slow pacing in the middle early second-half of the film, it was done well.

I've once read that a great ending can leave an impression that a mediocre movie was better than it was. I think that Don't Look Up is a good movie, with a great ending. The scene at the dinner table, admittedly, made my eyes a bit wet. It was sweet and peaceful. The during-credits scene on the new planet was hilarious, especially the call-back to the line about how Meryl Streep was going to die.

I enjoyed the film. I'm not going to take it too seriously, I highly doubt that it is particularly meant to be. From what I've read, it's simply commentary on how laissez-faire we are, as a society, about climate change, and sorta poking fun at it. I dig it.

"Don't Look Up" is a satirical science-fiction movie, a critique of the current state of affairs in human society, and I'm afraid it's more right about the issues it tackles than wrong.

Directed by Adam McKay and starring Leonardo di Caprio and Jennifer Lawrence, this film is an allegory about humanity's inaction towards an impending global catastrophe (the Environmental/Climate Crisis), and the stupidity of the masses (by embracing nonsensical Conspiracy Theories).

Merryll Streep is the USA President, almost a female version of Donald Trump. The President is being told by 2 unknown scientists about a comet that could kill the entire planet, and all she cares about is politics. Only when she sees it as a political opportunity for herself does she take action. I mean, which real politician would do any different?

Then the scientists go to the Media to present their findings and warn everybody, but are met with another round of indifference. Who cares about comets? Let's gossip about Hollywood!

Then the world descends into folly, split among those who believe ("Look Up") and don't believe ("Don't Look Up") in the catastrophe. Sounds familiar? It's another critique, this time about the Covid-19 conspiracy theories.

The film ends with the world meeting its literal end, due to humanity's inaction, in a striking yet depressing final scene, where di Caprio et al. gather round the family table for a final supper, together. This time around there is no hero to save the day at the last minute.

Only real problem about this movie is di Caprio and Lawrence's flat performances. Meryl Streep and Jonah Hill are much more enjoyable by comparison. But Mark Rylance steals the show, he brilliantly plays a Steve Jobbs/Jeff Bezos kind of character, who is too powerful and does whatever he pleases, irrespective of the consequences.

This film is no classic, there are better satires out there, but it's still fun to watch. And it hits the target, which is to raise some awareness about the world we live in and the issues we have to deal with.

But no, as it went on, I began warming up to this very odd, dark, satire. It borrows a premise from some blockbuster adventure flick - at least I bet this has been done before - a big comet is on a collision course with earth, and what is to be done? A couple of well-intentioned scientists set out to inform their leaders and the public of the bad news. But surprise - this is where the flick takes a sharp turn - our leaders don't want to hear about it, and urge caution, etc. The scientists (DiCaprio and Lawrence) soon find themselves embroiled in controversies and romantic entanglements. Mark Rylance is a hoot as a Musk/Jobs-like engineering genius who comes up with a way to profit from the comet. Cate Blanchett is fantastic as a heartless talk show hostess. It is co-written by leftist journalist David Sirota. This is full of loony, funny moments - and it could irritate a lot of people. Expand

In his most ambitious film, McKay tries to avoid the disaster movie ("Deep Impact", "Armageddon") to look up to "Dr. Strangelove" adapting it to the epochal changes of our contemporaneity. But if Kubrick gradually caught fire with the transition from the grotesque to the final invective suspended between farce and iconoclastic satire, this film follows the opposite path: it starts full of hilarious gags and then freezes there, in a parodistic irony that in the second part does not know how to make genial leaps in quality and runs aground in the vicinity of the nihilism of "Melancholia".

the cast and acting was legendary, the story was decent executed brilliantly, with just plot of comet hitting the earth and people reaction the movie kept me engaged and it was awesomely executed, the comet situation and the people's reaction was literally like "WHAT" moment through-out the movie it was like people being people straight for 2hrs, the starting scene with office meeting the free snack issue was hilarious and from then the meeting with president and the whole moring show interview with it the news anchor getting onboard with leo it was damn then the whole ups and down in story with president vs scientist and then the mocking of apple ceo the peter he's plan and literal destruction of planet and ended with the scientist being together after whole **** journey to them it was amazing, some moments in it were literally hilarious like the meeting scene jonah tries to kiss jenifer it was sarcasting then the whole pop star thing in morining show and people reacting to news and all the way the real-life things are mocked in movie was awesome to watch, the timotee character was decent, the ending was literally surprising the family reunion of leo and the post-credits the new planet and the creatures eating president it was shockingly hilarious and amazing, the showcase of capitalism in bad light it felt unbelieveable for president and investor part apart from that every aspect of movie was fun and entertaining,Overall it's uniquely entertaining movie!

Don't Look Up has a lot of things to say and really wants the viewer to know that. The movie has very solid performances and has some unique editing, something that is par for the course in an Adam McKay film. However, I do think that the message of the film is a tad on the nose; and that the overall portrayal of humanity isn't fully "accurate", though it is entertaining. I understand that this movie is a parody; I'm just wondering - how much of one? While I think this is the weakest out of McKay's recent directorial endeavors, it is still worth a watch. It's a flawed, but interesting, film. Expand

The mockery was of society, not of “mental health issues” as some other reviewers have said. Quite the opposite- they are mocking society’s rejection of science (and it’s ability to take facts seriously)- something we should all be familiar with at this point, with Covid and the rejection of scientific facts about global warming, etc. Beyond the meaning, it was so well acted and entertaining, thought-provoking and refreshing. Netflix gives it an impressive Hollywood treatment. The big name cast and polished script manages to comment on or allude to the previous presidential administration's fecklessness and the current administration and congress's challenge at actually getting anything done in the midst of our national obsession with reality TV, social media, likes, toothless congressional committees afraid to act, and 15-minutes-of-fame politicians using current challenges to up their personal profiles and self-created importance. Not only does the project boast a cast worthy of being called “A-list”, casting director Francine Maisler, does an outstanding job with the casting itself. Netflix continues to up the ante by demonstrating the level to which they are willing to put an impressive amount of resources behind quality projects. The main cast of 18 credited actors includes among them, 6 oscar winners in acting categories; 2 more oscar nominees also in acting categories; a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award winner; and 3 emmy award winners or nominees. The director and writer Adam McKay is an oscar winning screenwriter and nominee for best director. The actors deliver on all counts with Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, and Meryl Streep at the top of their game. Cate Blanchett and Tyler Perry are a hilarious duo spoofing the cheery banter and personality-driven morning news shows.

Production value is top notch as expected. The look of the film emulates a kind of slick superficial overly-filtered imagery so common in the social media culture it pokes at and in so doing ... looks great - credit to cinematographer Linus Sandgren, the art direction team, and production designer Clayton Hartley. Special effects are on par with top film productions and that's no small achievement given what we take for granted as part of films due to technological advancements, especially where special effects are concerned. The scenes of global disaster are not only impressively violent, but they are spectacularly well done. Nicholas Britell (2 time oscar nominee and emmy winner for original scores) delivers a soundtrack that works on many levels. It references the caper films of the 60s and 70s, and easily shifts to more wistful celestial sounds during interspersed scenes of nature, and the earth’s varied landscape reminding us that global events don’t just effect people … just as … oh, I don’t know … climate change doesn’t just effect humans but all living creatures on both land and in the seas.

Don't Look Up will be hard for some to watch because it says what many have been saying for the past 5 years socially and politically. The film also presses forward grimly with its expected outcome. As entertainment, the film has a solid story line with interesting and credible side stories woven nicely into the plot without wavering from the films primary purpose which I think is for us to remember that this our lives make up "real life" and are not part of a television show. We are not extras on a set somewhere. The actions or inactions of our government have consequences. Let’s hope the message will finally sink in with this film.

For some, the humor sticks, for others, it's distracting. It's hard to argue for or against either side, but as a film, it does stand out thanks to the timely theme (human beings are too distracted by nothing to care about something) and the lead performances of Dicaprio and Meryl Streep (both top-notch). The brisk pacing via the "Adam McKay" (and Baumbauch) jump cuts also help move the action along, minimizing the awkwardness of the delicate balance between the humor and the thematic weightiness. It may seem go overboard at times (particularly in the third act), and does sometimes have a difficult time balancing the two polarities (comedy - deadly serious social problem), but it is thoroughly entertaining and a solid achievement nonetheless. Consider it a unique and disturbingly prescient comedy that needed to be made, despite its flaws. Expand

Written and directed by Adam McKay who is no stranger to such movies with his previous outings such as The Big Short, a film about the 2008 housing crisis and economic crash, and VICE, a film about Dick Cheney's tenure, with both having a strong layer of satire embedded in the narrative and so I was excited to check this out. Another hit from the man.

My enjoyment of this movie boils down to two main reasons:

1) Growing up, I was a huge fan of Disaster or end-of-the-world scenario movies regardless of what is bringing that end and two of my favourites from that time were Armageddon and Deep Impact, both dealing with a large Asteroid impact, so I was naturally giddy with excitement when a modern movie with a similar scenario came out and dealt with that subject matter in a satirical tone. A fresh experience of something I love.

2) The social commentary on the state of the modern world and several avenues in it as what would the world do if Humanity is faced with this extinction event whether it is politics, mainstream media, social media, big tech companies, science, the youth, family etc, and giving jabs to both sides of the political spectrum. Some of it is heavy-handed and too on the nose going to absurdism while some of it is subtle and that created a fun balance. It also can be horrifying as to how close to home it hits with all the nonsense that is happening nowadays.

Of course, the movie wouldn't have been great without having a large and talented cast, all of whom gave good-great performances, enhancing your attachment or disdain for the characters according to the plot. My favourite was without a doubt, Leonardo DiCaprio. The dude's amazing in everything I've watched and this was no exception. Seeing him in a scientist role struggling to deal with the sheer stupidity at hand from the Govt. and the media made me frustrated as well, alongside the co-star Jennifer Lawrence, who was also great. I like that while it is a comedy, it walks the line between serious and absurd rather well. If it was all goofy and funny, it wouldn't have had the impact it wanted to have.

Well directed, written and shot with erratic editing that works for a movie like this as it keeps the momentum going. Without giving anything away, I do, however, wish that we got to see a bit more towards the end. Also, I did miss Adam McKay's style of 4th wall breaks or the fake obvious wrap-ups but considering it is a fictional tale and not based on a historical event or personality, maybe it wouldn't have worked here.

Overall, I enjoyed it a lot, this was right up my alley. It is definitely amongst the best of 2021 for me. If you like satire or if the premise interests you, I'd recommend giving this a watch. And if I were to rate it, I'd give it a solid 8/10.

Before I start, wow the review bombs on this are crazy.... What has happened to criticism :/

Ok, so most reviews would have you believe this film is either a cult classic or the worst dribble ever produced by Holly Wood EVER. Putting political leanings aside for a second, this movie is objectively nothing revolutionary but also far the pure dribble most would have you believe. The plot begins with Leo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence playing a pair of astronomical researchers who make a discovery. A massive comet is going to hit the Earth. If this sounds a lot like the plot of Armageddon that because it start off like that, however the story quickly unfolds into a tangled mess of political drama and combat as the pair struggle to get raise awareness of the Earths impending doom. Being a dark comedy with heavy political implication this film has no issue taking pot shot at both sides of the isle while presenting it dooms day scenario as both a possibility and the butt of many of this films jokes. This is in some cases its strength but also its greatest weakness. While the premise would do well in a short dooms day flick the with multiple plot lines the struggles of theses scientists quickly begins to wear you down as you realize that problems which were previously believed to be solved come back into the fold simply because film hasn't reached it full run time just yet. This is kind of the crux of this film, it gives itself way too much breathing room and expects it audience hang on as it continues hammer in its message through, not so vaguely stated, political allegories. While there is nothing wrong with the allegories themselves, the length of the movie left me wondering if the same impact could have been achieved with an hour thirty or even two hour film as opposed to the two and a half hour trudge we got. All in all I found this film to have a lot of very funny critiques on things such as media, fame, nepotism, political corruption and pseudo science which are interesting the first few times they appears but begin to wear on you at around the two hour mark. Definitely worth a watch if you've nothing else on your Netflix queue.

The film highlights important and currently relevant themes such as social media, "political activism", and corrupt leadership. It also features great performances, primarily those of DiCaprio and Lawrence. It seemed that the immense stakes of the story took a bit away from the lead characters and left them feeling a bit underwritten, but much of this was made up for by the terrific lead acting. They made emotional moments that shouldn't have worked some of the best parts of the movie. I also found that most of the comedy really hit for me with Jonah Hill in particular being a highlight in this respect. My one other flaw was that the film had a few side plots that seemed a bit extraneous, but many of these wound up having at least some pay off. In summary, Don't Look Up is hilarious and extremely topical in today's world. I would absolutely recommend giving it a watch. Expand

So it takes some time to find it's feet is what i'm saying. But when it get's into it's stride it's ok.

Most reviews say "its not a comedy" "its a bad comedy" or "the jokes are kinda weird in a apocaliptic movie" and... thats the point, is only a comedy for people who already know everything that happens in the real world, how this is... way too close, and decide to deal with it by joking while trying to do something about it cause we are too weak to deal with it directly. I love how all characters are at least bydimensionals, having literally all deniers that moment of "hey, i believe in my politics, but im being treated as a fool"(which they are)"So **** this guys" is good, really cool, how it doesnt go the really easy way of "those are all dumb people and we the bad guys" it does say something new? Probably not, no idea, im not a critic, but it says the right things the right way and talks about something that most mainstream movies (probably there are a lot that dont, but again, idk) just ignore and say "If humanity is in danger everyone will sudently agree, usa will be the best nation, help everyone and solve the problems while the rest just sit down and all america agrees cause saving the planet is easy." Also it does kinda help to avoid the actual problem? Maybe, dont think so, but maybe someone will ignore the actual problems in the actual world, i feel most people will do the oposite and is cool to see this movies, even if they are the 232343 movie of saying the same thing (which i dont think they are, but again again, idk) Also i really liked it so im putting it even high than i think others with my same points would put it is not a ten because idk if im just very hyped. It was satire, too close to the truth.... Very well done and mocking everything wrong with the world in this day and age. Climate change is real but we have billionaires who pretend they are more smart and only care about profits.

Incredible film on the existential crisis of climate extinction. David Sirota knocks it out of the park with his writing debut.

It is a time capsule of the insanity that we live in every single day. The only reason it has bad critic reviews is that those critics are part of the media and social networks that the movie so brilliantly mocks. This movie says what needs saying, we are a ridiculously stupid species that may very well be on the brink of extinction. Expand
