I would just prefer a meteorite hitting earth than to ever have to match this movie again.

I’ll watch Armageddon again tomorrow to wash away the bad taste of this one…

Acting also has no significant charm or weight except for the main characters Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. However, as a simple disaster comedy movie, the completeness is rather fine. Adam McKay's comedy directing and sense are alive, and the supporting actors may be wasteful, but the acting and Jennifer Lawrence were as good as the main characters DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. The problem is that the satire's method is obvious and shallow, but camera work and editing are colorful, and cross-editing with twisted time lines also reduced boredom as a fun factor. It can be said that the completeness as a genre movie is good. Expand

You know what you’re getting with McKay, so it shouldn’t be surprising this is as self-satisfied as his last two films. A few chuckles, but what’s the point? It’s like a two-hour version of that Gal Gadot “Imagine” video…

In the olden days, terrible movies bombed at the box office because moviegoers don't want to waste their money. But with Netflix, you're paying for everything with a flat fee, so there is no way for the marketplace to hold them to account. You're not going to cancel Netflix over a single movie, and they don't release objective viewership data, so now, everything is wonderful. It's a great deal for the actors, Netflix props up its share price, and our culture suffers death by mediocrity. Because this movie is self-indulgent dreck. Expand

And considering that both projects began filming in November 2020, it leads me to believe that their screenwriters shared notes.

Don't Look Up is another big film that completely wastes a remarkable cast.
And this one has even bigger names than House of Gucci.
The main problem with this story is that its satire is neither subtle, nor clever, and frankly not even relevant.

The parody, which is more than clearly an accurate reflection of the situation that the United States experienced under Donald Trump's administration when the pandemic began, and has carried ever since, is torn to shreds by its plot incompetence.

How many times has it been said that we need a meteorite to fall on us and make us extinct? That's the joke of this film.

Don't Look Up doesn't express anything interesting in that regard.
It comes to reinvent absolutely nothing, because this is a completely palpable reality, if you spend any time on any social media.
Its humor is simply idiotic because the characters are nothing more than uninteresting parodies, let alone comical.

You can easily tell the cast just wanted to have fun and get paid. I mean, it was recently revealed that Leonardo DiCaprio was paid 30 million dollars for this role, while Jennifer Lawrence got 25.
I seriously need a job where for just doing the bare minimum I get a 30 million dollars salary.

That's how disappointing this film is.

That it's being considered as an Academy award contender? That's low for the Academy.

I only hope that The Lost Daughter and The Hand of God will repair my disappointment when it comes to Netflix.

I'm not sure who Meryl Streep was trying to be, but it didn't work, nor did Jonah Hill as her callous son and chief of staff. Perhaps the most annoying and most perplexing character was Peter Isherwell. Not sure who he was supposed to be either - a cross between Elon Musk and Carl Sagan perhaps? Whatever the case, the absurdity of mining the comet for precious minerals by breaking it up into bite size chunks and harvesting them from the Pacific Ocean would have made any astronomer apoplectic, but our good Dr. Mindy seems to take it all in stride, until he asks for peer review.

This is one of those movies you are supposed to laugh at but take seriously at the same time. The biggest question is why a comet movie when we know Leo and Adam wanted us to take global warming more seriously? Why not a string of natural disasters that lead to earth shattering consequences, but governments around the world remain oblivious to events? I guess that's a bit too close to reality. Leo and Adam want to have us imagine a more immediate pending doom.

But, the comet just doesn't work on any number of levels. Most people would be oblivious to it because you can't see it. We've had these warnings before and the comet manages to just miss and go hurtling off in space toward some other unsuspecting planet. Even if we had a 6-month warning, it is doubtful we could get enough rockets into space in time to thwart such a comet. It would be the end of the world as we know it, REM playing in the background.

So, we see astronomers made into nasty memes and internet sensations until they outgrow their purpose. Nothing really important is said in this film. It is on about the same level as Mike Judge's Idiocracy, but at least that movie was surprisingly prescient. Who would have believed back in 2006 that we would get President Donald Drumpf a short 10 years later? Judge didn't see us becoming that stupid for another 500 years.

Unfortunately, Netflix wants us to believe this film is important, so they are now offering podcasts to further pursue the theme at the beginning of the new year, "The Last Movie Ever Made." Well, I've had enough.

Well, actually, it was Netflix who dropped Don't Look Up in our stocking. With a cast filled with movie stars and an intriguing premise, it's no wonder Netflix gifted us this flick on Christmas, but were we naughty or nice? Here's whether Don't Look Up is actually a lump of coal.

Adam McKay has been in socio-political satire mode since The Big Short. He has gone back to that well for Don't Look Up but with a more ridiculous sensibility. In this film, a PhD student in astronomy, Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence), discovers a comet orbiting in the solar system. In analyzing her discovery, Diabiasky's professor, Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) calculates the trajectory of the comet and determines that it is on course to make direct impact with Earth. Because of the comet's size, impact will be a catastrophic event leading to extinction of all life on Earth. Dr. Mindy and Dibiasky embark on a mission to warn the people of the world of this impending devastating event. Along the way, they encounter the MAGA-esque President Janie Orlean (Meryl Streep), her dimwitted, sycophantic son/Chief of Staff, Jason (Jonah Hill), some airheaded news anchors (Cate Blanchett and Tyler Perry) and many others who refuse to believe the science and allow ultimate disaster to continue hurtling towards Earth. Hijinks ensue?

Don't Look Up is like a mix between Armageddon and Idiocracy, but never reaches the mindless spectacle of the former nor the sharp foresight of the latter. Adam McKay's script has turned the percolating concern about climate change and the willful ignorance around the COVID-19 pandemic into this obvious farce about intergalactic doom. All the societal players are lampooned: politicians, news media, scientists and tech billionaires. The problem is that there's nothing smart about any of what's being said or the comedy that's supposedly depicted in the situation. There have been better and funnier critiques in other venues. In fact, it's just frustrating and sad. This approximation of our current socio-political climate is not funny, entertaining or enlightening. There's no insight in reflecting what many in American society already know about our institution. What's worse is that McKay provides no potential solutions. We're just headed for disaster, so just accept it, I guess.

Unfortunately, while this film features a large cast including DiCaprio, Streep, Blanchett, Lawrence, Hill, Perry, with cameos by Ariana Grande, Kid Cudi, Timothy Chalamet, and more, the star power cannot save or distract from what's otherwise deeply depressing.

If you are looking to escape from the bleakness of the world, then Don't Look Up will not likely provide that respite. If you want to see a star-studded socio-political satire with echoes of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of willful ignorance, then you may enjoy this movie. Unfortunately, Adam McKay did not bring the comedy nor the insight necessary to make his agenda in this movie worth the 2-hour-plus runtimes. Since this film is on Netflix and, even though it is depressing and stress-inducing, it is not boring, but to be safe just grab a handful of popcorn while giving Don't Look Up a glance.

5 out of 10 is a perfectly forgettable film.

I've given this movie a 4 out of 10. For every moment where the satire is great, there is another moment where the satire is Wayan's Brothers bad. The worst offense is the run time. I paused the movie to use the restroom, thinking I'd been watching the movie for a hot minute and it should maybe only have 20 minutes or so left, just to see we still had an hour to go. Needless to say, I fast forwarded through the oddly placed, full-length music video. All-in-all, 4 out of 10. I don't plan to ever rewatch it and I probably wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first 30 minutes set up something that really could’ve been an amazing movie, but it loses its focus after that. Yes, it’s is a satire, but a movie with such a promising cast lost all seriousness the moment they try to make a statement that has been regurgitated 30 times across multiple titles. That being said, the acting by the main cast is really well done, but the script fails to deliver any sort of depth for the characters. What you see in the first half an hour doesn’t change for the rest of the film.

The CGI in the movie is below average for something that came out in 2021. The random clipping to groups of people watching a news broadcast loses it’s touch after the first few times it’s introduced, more or less the ~50 times the movie uses this. It feels more redundant than anything to show random scenes of wildlife and cell phone ads in the middle of the monologues given. The cinematography felt lazy and uninspired, but even more so felt disorganized. Very little timespan is given throughout the movie, and before you know it you went from 6 months until Comet destroys the planet to just a few weeks.

The real moment the movie lost me was with Jonah Hills acting outside of their first real encounter. Everyone else in the main cast did a really good job of bringing the serious undertones into play, but Jonah Hills awkward **** comedy relief really just took away from the movie as a whole.

In summary, the movie falls flat after it barely gets on its feet due to the gradual turn from “apocalyptic drama” to “satirical comedy”. The only satisfying part of the movie is the inevitable destruction at the end after being spoon fed GREED IS BAD, DESTROY BIG BUSINESSES for the last hour or so. That, along with Leonardo DiCaprio’s sudden change of heart in his final interview. Honestly a shame since the first bit of the movie makes it out to be something a lot more interesting. Would not watch again nor recommend to anyone.

An interesting Rorschach test of a film that offers the collective sociopolitical landscape a mirror to gaze into, but with not as much of the madcap satire and laughs as the trailers would have you believe. Adam McKay's "Don't Look Up"An interesting Rorschach test of a film that offers the collective sociopolitical landscape a mirror to gaze into, but with not as much of the madcap satire and laughs as the trailers would have you believe. Adam McKay's "Don't Look Up" references nearly every single sticking point and infrastructural hurdle present in our current times, without necessarily looking to solve any of those issues or point towards potential solutions of any kind. For those of us who are less in touch with the systemic issues plaguing us, this might mark a provocative moment for positive change. For those of us who are already convinced and aware, you kind of just sit and nod along with the film in agreement until it reaches its frustratingly predictable conclusion. In many ways, it feels like McKay's close to having made his mind up about people. Not sure if it's the movie I needed right now, but if it's the one that someone else needed to see in order to spark a necessary course-correction in their life, then I guess that's something. Expand

Leonardo DiCaprio, easily one of the best parts of this crowded cast. Both funny and dramatic. The freak out scene on live TV was some of the best acting from him. I watched that scene so many times.

The movie itself I found a bit iffy. It's long, the editing is strange, and it's one of those movies that tries to fit in every single famous actor in one movie. But in a weird way, in some over the top, not subtle way, I found the movie to be brilliant at times. It had its moments of anxiety with some scary moments involving people in power, who during a global crisis only see the opportunity to make themselves even richer. The world rest in the hands of leaders who don't really care about human life.

The humour / satire is atrocious to look at, while the subtext sort has some good points here and there. Especially the last few scenes really grabbed my heart, but this just wrapped in layers upon layers of unfunny and surface-level satire. But that's also kind of the only thing dragging the movie down, it's a huge point, don't get me wrong, but that doesn't necessarily make it a bad movie, it could've just been so much better. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Don't look up has a front-runner actors who play the part perfectly, but some terrible performances.

The biggest problem that many critics are criticising is its inherent smugness which I'd agree. Oddly audience scores are somewhat divided depending on site. IMBD is a bit higher, rotten tomatoes is completely polarised as usual, audience scores far surpass the actual quality of movies and shows then metacritic is a good intermediate. There's a message to be said in Don't look up about the peer review process but the movie doesn't touch that, it'd rather shallowly obsess over social media platforms like the people it's satirising while also including a Ariana Grande song scene that drags on for what felt like 5 solid minutes of screentime. Jokes are repeated and overstay they're welcome and the dumbing down of ideological positions, complex issues are reduced to the butt of a joke. It's a bit tone deaf when it comes to politics and the current **** state of the world, choosing cowardly not to offer any real solutions to the problems it rises. So why bother bringing them up in the first place? Aren't we just as bad for laughing at inspid Twitter, tiktok Instagram Facebook, twitch users for laughing at them and offering no solutions to mass distraction, and lack of caring scientific rigour for the impeding doom of the planet?

Social media, vanity shallow performances, corporatism, capitalism and greed eats up more time than scientific literacy so it's the fault of dumb, shallow people that the earth destroyed it doesn't follow.

It's the fault of greedy populist politicians like Meryl Streeps female Trump president, which begs the question how would you even have a female Trump in inherently **** beyond belief misogynistic office and voter base? There's also a Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates character who's a tech company billionaire that flouts the peer review process and only cares to mine the comet for precious elements. He has misguided utopian goals

While the movie shows the occasional b roll of nature and proverty stricken families watching foreign American news in Asia, and the global south, it's focus is solely on the U.S. Not even Europe, no Australia, Africa isn't a footnote. Panning to Korean and Japanese people doesn't constitute a perception. Why bother adding this **** if it's not going to extend outside the U.S. Your telling me Japan and Europe didn't at least try to back a project to deflect the comet? Pfizer and Japan with its long history of STEM contributions and nobel prize laureates in various fields, manufacturing and technology.

Only the states did anything and China or Russia botched their project. The scene is too short in this muddled mess of a movie that it's a footnote. The U.S is the sole focus.

It's all a bit too bull****, yes there's a lot of **** politicians, journalists are good for nothing but click bait and scientists can be bought out the pocket, but theres also many good ones at Michigan state. Rather than focus on explaining what peer review even is and metastudies or even the scientific method it beats you over the head that the average person is too obsessed with capitalist endeavours to care. This **** hurts to watch as a STEM graduate, it's an analogy of COVID and climate change but most of the world backs changes. Escape American centric bubble the logistics are what needs to be settled with climate change. Many biotech companies repspnded to the pandemic Pfizer, Astrazeneca. Quelling the ongoing pandemic is a global effort, not national. The last scene is smultzy and in poor taste. Why have blind faith? You've Spent the entire movie ****ting on those with blind faith, misplaced belief of the peer review process and evidence. And there's nothing really said about why Jennifer Lawrences character is treated poorly by the masses while Leonardo DiCaprio's is venerated and positively **** There's no real commentary on scientific illiteracy, so the underlying message boils down to 'old man yells at clouds' 'those kids today and there social medias' Don't look up is pretentious parody of what it's trying to parody and a grueling two hour one at that. Some of the jokes are fine, some of its accidentally tone deaf of real issues and borderline offensive. It's unwillingness to offer solutions and sit laugh at "dumb people" trump populists, social media obsessed, clickbait journalists, sycophants is more harm than good. It's painfully funny how it doesn't acknowledge its own bias of favoritising frontal nudity of woman and the sexist undertones only showing women's bodies nude, only showing straight sex while disgust at anything else throughout the movie. But someone's going to call this lukewarm nothing with no teeth leftist though because it ****s on Trump poorly and shallowly.

The movie is like a teenager view of the complexities (and problems) of modern vox-politix (and real politics) in not wanting to address real world problems. It was a 5 min skit that was made into a 2.5 hour waste of time. The characters are ridiculous - the writing even more so... but the point is - it's not engaging. I'm from the demographic that was meant to be the 'converted'... but I actually found the narrative to be the same one-note tunnel-vision view of the world that this was meant to be reflecting on (and not in a clever way). Nothing was interesting; nothing stimulating. Just a lot of pandering to people wanting to be angry at... something? As a scientist - I thought this was just demeaning, and misunderstanding of how science works. Also, as someone that has experienced the political aspects that it discusses - it actually was like a comic-book version. Completely wrong, and like someone wrote a story about something they had no understanding of - based on the fact that 95% of people wouldn't either. It just builds on poor stereotypes (because it suits) while just undermining a lot of good work that people do. Worst thing - this was supposed to be a comedy. It wasn't funny.

I for one was hoping the comet came early.

The aggressively mediocre satire that loses itself in a tediously wrapped 2 hour salad. With nothing exciting or bold to offer in the monotony of the premise.

It shines a light on the role of government, companies (including media), and their relation to society. It also conveys an important message directed towards people who believe in recent conspiratorial theories. For someone already inside the bubble, the film story might be as obvious as it might be dull. There is a confounded tension between each half (lengthwise) of the movie: the first one has a more cringe comedy touch, while the second gets a more down-to-earth tone. Its first act is a terrible introduction to the story, as the dialogues instead of being cringe-worthy are just far-fetched. The cast performed honorably, but the screenplay is just not too appealing. Expand

I thought the ending was a mixed bag. It was dramatic but I thought it was trying a bit too hard but that's my opinion. I thought there was a couple funny scenes though. The cutscenes at the very end were quite bad and putting Ariana Grande in the movie was a strange choice but I don't really mind. Overall the movie was good. Not mediocre but it was good. Expand

I wish I haven't watched this garbage that they have the audacity to call a movie - literally a waste of time. At the beginning it was ok but then it went from 100 to 0 real quick.
