From director Adam McKay ('Anchorman', 'Talladega Nights', 'Step Brothers' and more recent political comedies such as 'The Big Short' and 'Vice') comes this scathing apocalyptic political satire focusing on two scientists (Leonardo DiCaprioFrom director Adam McKay ('Anchorman', 'Talladega Nights', 'Step Brothers' and more recent political comedies such as 'The Big Short' and 'Vice') comes this scathing apocalyptic political satire focusing on two scientists (Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence) who discover a comet that is on a direct collision course with planet Earth that will destroy and annihilate everyone and everything. Together, the two embark on a wide and extensive media tour to try and warn the world about its impending doom, but unfortunately the government, the president and her Chief-of-staff son (a very Trump-like Meryl Streep and Jonah Hill), and most people don't seem to care or want to listen to them. I had mixed feelings going into this one. The premise sounded absurd (which I know was kinda the point), but I still remained skeptical about if it would be able to be pulled off effectively. But with the amount of talent that's stacked to the wall here, from a-list actors such as DiCaprio and Lawrence, along with supporting players such as Hill, Streep, Cate Blanchett, Timothee Chalamet, etc.) along with star musicians such as Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi, you'd think even they'd be able to churn out something even halfway decent or worthwhile. But man oh man, that could NOT be further from the case! This farce of a film is an absolute cringefest from start to finish, is thoroughly unfunny and tries WAY too hard for its own good and seemingly resorts to characters screaming and shouting at each other whenever the jokes run out, and is just downright painful to sit through in so many ways. I absolutely could not care less how socially relevant this film is supposed to be, nor how spot on it is with its commentary on our ignorance of world issues and the political climate that seemingly does little to nothing to address or fix them. Had the film been much shorter, it could've made this mess of a film only slightly more tolerable, but at nearly two and a half hours, this film WAAAYYY overstays its welcome, not that it was welcome for very long, cause even at an hour and a half, I guarantee this film still would've been equally as grating on me, and the film's end and final act just added insult to injury with the whole ordeal. Overall, the bottom line is this: not only is this easily my worst film of the year, it's quite honestly one of THE worst films I've seen in years! It's not funny in the slightest, runs out of jokes (if I can even call them that) within the first half hour, and completely wastes its talented cast with a horrible, aimless, and obnoxious film that thinks it's so smug and slick. Well news flash: it's not. Expand

The pacing of the movie was horrendous and it shouldn't have been as long as it is. The acting for the most part was great but Leonardo's acting kinda fell and I can say its around one of his worse roles(but not worse when he fought a CGI bear). However, the disappointment came quickly. Basically, the film strives to repeat the same criticism over and over again. If you watch the first 10 minutes of the movie, you can know that the rest will be the same. It's as if the entire movie is summed up in a single scene that repeats itself over and over, but with different characters and places. The characters are extremely caricatured, dumb and all are the same, making the dialogue predictable and tedious. The script is weak and forced. The director/screenwriter should have bet on subtlety, but instead turned the film into two hours of boring replays. I couldn't even finish the movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It could have been a brilliant satire if the meteor would have missed the Earth at the end of the movie, because this is what happened with all the scientist predictions including COVID until now.
But the way it is, this is just political propaganda. "Capitalism is bad", "if we only gave all the power to the state, the world would have been better", and all the other leftist stuff. I'm surprised that Xi doesn't pop up at the end to save everyone. Acting is limited by Jennifer Lawrence screaming at everyone, because they don't listen to her. And why would they? She didn't even complete her PhD.
I feel really sorry for people that were "too afraid" to watch this movie, or found it "too realistic". There is nothing realistic about socialist brainwashing.

Self congratulatory drivel. It is funny in a sense of you interpreting it as satire of the self absorbed judgemental class, starring the same, while blissfully unaware. Pretty sure that wasn't the feel the director was looking for.

With Leonardo DiCaprio as the lead, I was expecting this to be a serious take on the apocalypse genre, but instead, all we got was a film that tried to mix a serious plot and character into a generic 'satire' piece so generic it wouldn't look out of place in SNL.
It does absolutely nothing new and the writing in some parts is so surface level and is clearly trying to cater to Gen X humour. And the 'satire' is so in your face is like you don't have to think about what they are saying and they have clearly never heard of being subtle.

Also what was with that ending, especially the last scene. It was such a weird and unsatisfying way to end it.

At the very least, the 'serious characters' do a good job and the CGI looks nice

In short, I think this would have been much better if it was more serious, but instead, we get the blandest satire ever with a few good actors thrown in.

I'm not and I stopped watching about half of the way in. There were some things that I liked about it: Jennifer Lawrence's bangs were awesome. The writing however was too broad and loud and the direction (the director co-wrote) was too broad, also. And didn't make sense. We have a character played by Lawrence who stays pretty cool and calm and out of nowhere loses it on national television. Then a few scenes later, the nervous character played by Leonardo di Caprio, who has learned to stay calm and confident on camera loses it during an interview on national television essentially in exactly the same way. I believe that the climate situation is urgent and requires world wide action. This self-indulgent film will win awards, I'm sure, as Hollywood loves to reward itself for its social commentary. But it wasn't a good movie. Expand

McKay was clearly on a Wes Anderson marathon before directing this schlock. Don’t Look Up has all the makings of a Wes Anderson film: intermittent visual cuts, over-the-top main characters, and comically mocking a serious topic while responsibly handling the topic’s severity. McKay takes all of these hallmarks and miraculously fumbles all of them by making the intermittent cuts as bizarre and irrelevant as possible, making everyone except the main characters unnaturally over-the-top, and having no respect for the topics parodied to the point that one can safely say Don’t Look Up was designed for the express purpose of exploiting American angst to make a quick buck. All of this incompetent bumbling works in heinous disharmony to create one of the most tone-deaf, out-of-touch and blunt student film projects ever shown to the public eye.

Don’t Look Up’s most glaring issue is how extremely the tone changes mid-scene. There are sharp turns from depressed to snarky, shattered hope to joking about a character being cheap, and instantaneous political flip-flopping. The worst part is that all of these instances mentioned are not the parody characters, these are the main characters experiencing these emotionally unintelligent and abrupt changes in mood and behavior. The parody characters are subject to so many moments like these that I don’t have enough space to list them all here, so I’ll just mention the outlandish Trump parody and her genuinely Jafar from Aladdin level of vile son, the racist military veteran, and the 30-years too old Elon Musk parody.

The doomsday scenario of Don’t Look Up is clearly intended to mock the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. First off, there has not been enough time between the pandemic and now for even a good parody director to mock the event or the people involved, especially with the emergence of the Omicron variant and how the first wave of shutdowns is still hurting many people. Don’t Look Up feeds on the anger and dread of those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic by dangling the idea that the pandemic could have been handled better in people’s faces. One would think that Adam McKay did this intentionally to antagonize a still divided USA, and one would likely be right with how many other social issues are mocked.

A particularly poorly handled pair of elements of society that Don’t Look Up mocks are Big Tech and social media and it handles both with all the tact and understanding one should expect from a cast and crew dominated by people above and beyond the age of 40. The simple message, as direct as the movie itself gives you, is “big technology is bad and you should feel bad for supporting it and social media is a cancer on society that is making everyone stupid.” While I personally agree with most of the latter sentiment, actually having the experience required to believe such, this message has been beat to death by every filmmaker since the late 2000s to resonate with other technology-fearing middle-aged people.

Speaking of middle-aged, Casting Director Francine Maisler has brought has-beens from the 00s to be paid to phone in nearly every line. I feel horrible for Leonardo DiCaprio because he at least seemed to try to act to the best of his ability, but nobody else came close to delivering a pizza let alone a performance. Jennifer Lawerence seemed genuinely confused with how her character was supposed to emote at most moments and Jonah Hill honestly could not fail acting in-character given how the character was clearly tailored with the intent that Jonah Hill would be playing him.

Overall, don’t watch Don’t Look Up if you have any taste. Even as a bad movie it’s not a watchable bad movie like The Room or Twisted Pair, it’s just an ignorant and emotionally stunted cash grab that is only hot because it was designed to be as contemporary as possible. I know I was hard on Adam McKay, but he has a long list of significantly better movies than this atrocity against filmmaking. Pick any other Adam McKay film and you’ll likely enjoy it, but as it stands only Adam McKay fanatics and politically-excited nut jobs can possibly enjoy something like this.

I didnt know what to think about this movie at first.
Then I read the claims of the director that this movie was meant to criticize republicans about climate change.
But:
Why do republicans love Bill Clinton in this movie then?
Why is a Bill Gates/Fauci hybrid and Hillary Clinton being portrayed as republican then?
Why is the MSM being shown as republican outlets?

The only explanation is that the makers of this movie suffer from extreme projection and reality shined through a bit here and there.
They dont realize that everything they claim about the other side is what they do and are themselves.
Still, this fact makes this movie pretty hilarious. See it as an "Idiocracy" in the present and real life. Its a case study of the state of media, politization of science and corruption going on in the real world. Just not colored the way the director thought it would be. He thinks too black and white and far too much from his own very biased standpoint. Hes a mainstream director after all, getting his money from the establishment, which of course he needs to please to be able to keep making movies in this age and day of cancel culture.
I think he does know exactly what he did and so just used the distorted view of reality in this movie as full blown propaganda against his political opponents.

The movie is for sure so bad that its good again. Thats why finding a proper score was pretty hard to do. I mean it entertained me. Thats why I was going to give it a 5 or 6. But in the end I see reality and what was intended with this movie, which I cant tolerate in good conscience.

The message this film is sending about climate change and how our leaders react to it is something I 100% agree with and it’s a topic that should be talked about more in our society. A film like this presents that opportunity but this film does it in the most out of touch and bland way possible. I found a majority of this film to be insufferable with Leonardo DiCaprio’s being the only thing keeping me going. He’s the only thing I really loved about this movie. His performance is great and the rest of the actors here do a good job as well with Jonah Hill and Jennifer Lawrence being great as well. Ariana Grande though felt so forced. Her performance wasn’t very good and it feels like they just shoved her in to say “Look guys it’s a singer that you know”. The scene where Leo screams about climate change is the best part of the movie and the film does very slightly improve from there but not enough to redeem it. The writing and jokes are pretty awful here. Every line has to end in some sort of the joke and the film never once got a laugh from me not even in a so bad it’s good way. It just goes on and on and on until the end of the film. The films presentation is so bland here. The camera is constantly shaking and moving around but there really aren’t any cool shots to look at. The visual effects for space look good and that was the only time I really thought the visuals looked nice. The editing here is some of the worst I have seen in a movie. It jumps all over the place and makes no sense at all. It’s all rapid fear and it becomes nauseating after the first half hour. I do wish the subject of climate change here was handled a lot better. It feels so in your face about it and I wish the film had presented it more subtlety. For me, messages in movies that stick the hardest are the ones that aren’t always obvious. They make me think but this didn’t make me think. It shoved the issue in my face and while I agree with it, it should have been handled more delicately. I don’t think I could honestly recommend this to someone. Pass on it and watch something else. Expand

Movie was garbage. Beyond being politicized and further polarizing, the movie just wasn’t funny. You can hold a straight face this entire movie. Comedy dies when George Soros funds it.

Obviously cheap use of Meryl Streep, Jonah guy plays an exaggerated version of ev-er-y character he plays in every movie. I don't like Leo soft. They tried too hard with Jen's look--was that part of the sci- fi nod. Ariana was Ariana, Tyler Perry has a resting smirk face that I can get passed. The weird compilation of babies being born, and unrelated clips from everywhere seemed like a rush job with little thought.

Too accurate to be funny and too over the top to make any kind emotional impact.

Adam Mckay's over the top style works great for the antiquated blockbuster comedy and has been a cornerstone of some of my favorite movies like Anchorman & Stepbrothers. That being said, that over the top style just beats you down in a movie of this length and scale. You get the point of the movie within the first 20 minutes and you spend the subsequent 2 hours wondering if there will be anything insightful to be gleaned but eventually you realize that this movie is just holds up a mirror to society and has nothing more to offer.

There are a few funny lines here and there and the acting is as good as it could have been.

People who half way pay attention to what's going on in the world will feel secondhand smartness from this films conclusions and the actors will be able to go to sleep with a nice fat Netflix paycheck and a smug little smile on their faces.

All in all this movie is cynical self-serving garbage.

Leonardo Dicaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill and yes, even Meryl Streep, this couldn't be anything other than a straight 10/10, right? 20 Minutes in, and I kept wondering, "how is it possible to have such a great cast, but make such a terrible movie?" The "comedy" seems to have been written by people who only studied the concept of "comedy" but were never exposed to comedy themselves. Political messaging was on the nose (which I really don't mind) but this was basically carrying the message: "Believe what I think or you are not even a human being." I lost my respect to every single actor in the cast, because it is clear that the only reason they signed up for this was because of the paycheck. This movie just shows that everyone can be bought if the price is right. I love disaster spoof movies but this truly is the worst movie I've ever watched in my life. Expand

This film doesn't even recognise that other countries exist, yet continually talks about saving the planet. Of course Russia, with their own space programme, will let the US sort everything out by itself.
There are decent actors here, why do you make them do this obvious propaganda? The US just needs to get its head out of its own bottom.

If our civilization should be judged by the quality of movies and tv series, we would totally deserve an extinction-level event. The topic of our collective stupidity in front of an imminent disaster is so important that a badly executed satire is probably not the best way to talk about it. The basic rules of directing are so broken that, if not for the cast, it would look like a mediocre student-grade movie. The soundtrack is always much louder than the actors' voices, making it hard to follow the dialogues, and it is terrible. Overall: forgettable and childish. Expand

It is a film that is trying so hard to be satire but fails in almost every attempt because the writers simply cant help themselves from shoving the message down your throat at every opportunity.

So an astronomer finds a meteor heading toward earth and the acting presidents response is to ignore it(sound familiar?). Disregarding the hack tier writing that led to the inevitable comparison to real world world events that no one wants to think about when watching a movie, I have to ask, what is the point of this story? To show that some turn a blind eye to **** that stinks? Thanks movie, couldn't have figured that out without ya.

The performances were a mixed bag. Leo I thought was good, same with Jennifer lawrence. Nothing mind blowing but they do elevate the movie more than it would be without them and personally I think their talents are wasted on this toilet pap- I mean script. Jonah Hill was just obnoxious(and not in the fun Bill Murray way) and Meryl Streep was annoying as the president, no one else really stood out to me.

Somewhere along the line whoever was making this film forgot that satire isn't funny when its painfully obvious. You need subtlety because without it you just end up being a parody of real life which is the lowest hanging fruit in regards to comedy. This film wasn't frustrating simply because its bad(because it is) its frustrating because its could've been much better with a little more effort in the writing department.

This movie is obviously meant to be watched by progressives, which means it's just preaching to the choir.

I'm giving it a rating higher than 0/10, since if you ignore this huge glaring flaw, it was a really well-made and enjoyable movie.
