The brick approach is obviously the Trump like president, vacuous, interested in self importance and the aggrandisement of family. To be fair this is all true of the real world Trump, so any caricature is hardly going to be subtle. The flip side is a more subtle criticism of the nature of modern society and media.
Some have assumed references towards climate change and/or the Covid pandemic, but to me the critique felt much broader, where the ridiculously elevated importance of celebrity triviality in social media and the competing, desperate drive of conventional media to remain relevant has become more important than reporting anything of use or value, or indeed the truth.
Overall, despite some bumpy moments this was a hugely enjoyable film with an excellent social commentary and some very subtle humour. I've rated it higher than I would have (probably more like an 8) because, ironically, there are some who don't believe in censorship but will still apparently give silly scores to films whose message they consider too liberal.

I'm all for satirizing vapid social media culture's effect of governance, and the editing was substantially better than any Netflix Original I've seen, but I spent the first 20mins poking procedural holes in the narrative progression and got the overwhemling desire to punch the writers in the face when they started making belittling cheap shots at mental health disorders. For some, the humor sticks, for others, it's distracting. It's hard to argue for or against either side, but as a film, it does stand out thanks to the timely theme (human beings are too distracted by nothing to care about something) and the lead performances of Dicaprio and Meryl Streep (both top-notch). The brisk pacing via the "Adam McKay" (and Baumbauch) jump cuts also help move the action along, minimizing the awkwardness of the delicate balance between the humor and the thematic weightiness. It may seem go overboard at times (particularly in the third act), and does sometimes have a difficult time balancing the two polarities (comedy - deadly serious social problem), but it is thoroughly entertaining and a solid achievement nonetheless. Consider it a unique and disturbingly prescient comedy that needed to be made, despite its flaws. Expand

McKay was clearly on a Wes Anderson marathon before directing this schlock. Don’t Look Up has all the makings of a Wes Anderson film: intermittent visual cuts, over-the-top main characters, and comically mocking a serious topic while responsibly handling the topic’s severity. McKay takes all of these hallmarks and miraculously fumbles all of them by making the intermittent cuts as bizarre and irrelevant as possible, making everyone except the main characters unnaturally over-the-top, and having no respect for the topics parodied to the point that one can safely say Don’t Look Up was designed for the express purpose of exploiting American angst to make a quick buck. All of this incompetent bumbling works in heinous disharmony to create one of the most tone-deaf, out-of-touch and blunt student film projects ever shown to the public eye.

Don’t Look Up’s most glaring issue is how extremely the tone changes mid-scene. There are sharp turns from depressed to snarky, shattered hope to joking about a character being cheap, and instantaneous political flip-flopping. The worst part is that all of these instances mentioned are not the parody characters, these are the main characters experiencing these emotionally unintelligent and abrupt changes in mood and behavior. The parody characters are subject to so many moments like these that I don’t have enough space to list them all here, so I’ll just mention the outlandish Trump parody and her genuinely Jafar from Aladdin level of vile son, the racist military veteran, and the 30-years too old Elon Musk parody.

The doomsday scenario of Don’t Look Up is clearly intended to mock the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. First off, there has not been enough time between the pandemic and now for even a good parody director to mock the event or the people involved, especially with the emergence of the Omicron variant and how the first wave of shutdowns is still hurting many people. Don’t Look Up feeds on the anger and dread of those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic by dangling the idea that the pandemic could have been handled better in people’s faces. One would think that Adam McKay did this intentionally to antagonize a still divided USA, and one would likely be right with how many other social issues are mocked.

A particularly poorly handled pair of elements of society that Don’t Look Up mocks are Big Tech and social media and it handles both with all the tact and understanding one should expect from a cast and crew dominated by people above and beyond the age of 40. The simple message, as direct as the movie itself gives you, is “big technology is bad and you should feel bad for supporting it and social media is a cancer on society that is making everyone stupid.” While I personally agree with most of the latter sentiment, actually having the experience required to believe such, this message has been beat to death by every filmmaker since the late 2000s to resonate with other technology-fearing middle-aged people.

Speaking of middle-aged, Casting Director Francine Maisler has brought has-beens from the 00s to be paid to phone in nearly every line. I feel horrible for Leonardo DiCaprio because he at least seemed to try to act to the best of his ability, but nobody else came close to delivering a pizza let alone a performance. Jennifer Lawerence seemed genuinely confused with how her character was supposed to emote at most moments and Jonah Hill honestly could not fail acting in-character given how the character was clearly tailored with the intent that Jonah Hill would be playing him.

Overall, don’t watch Don’t Look Up if you have any taste. Even as a bad movie it’s not a watchable bad movie like The Room or Twisted Pair, it’s just an ignorant and emotionally stunted cash grab that is only hot because it was designed to be as contemporary as possible. I know I was hard on Adam McKay, but he has a long list of significantly better movies than this atrocity against filmmaking. Pick any other Adam McKay film and you’ll likely enjoy it, but as it stands only Adam McKay fanatics and politically-excited nut jobs can possibly enjoy something like this.

I'm not and I stopped watching about half of the way in. There were some things that I liked about it: Jennifer Lawrence's bangs were awesome. The writing however was too broad and loud and the direction (the director co-wrote) was too broad, also. And didn't make sense. We have a character played by Lawrence who stays pretty cool and calm and out of nowhere loses it on national television. Then a few scenes later, the nervous character played by Leonardo di Caprio, who has learned to stay calm and confident on camera loses it during an interview on national television essentially in exactly the same way. I believe that the climate situation is urgent and requires world wide action. This self-indulgent film will win awards, I'm sure, as Hollywood loves to reward itself for its social commentary. But it wasn't a good movie. Expand

However, the disappointment came quickly. Basically, the film strives to repeat the same criticism over and over again. If you watch the first 10 minutes of the movie, you can know that the rest will be the same. It's as if the entire movie is summed up in a single scene that repeats itself over and over, but with different characters and places. The characters are extremely caricatured, dumb and all are the same, making the dialogue predictable and tedious. The script is weak and forced. The director/screenwriter should have bet on subtlety, but instead turned the film into two hours of boring replays. I couldn't even finish the movie. Expand

The point that the main subject of the movie is an asteroid on its way to obliterate earth is one thing.
But what it really is rubbing hardest again is actually human intelligence. It is a black, head-on satire on modern society that we live in today, and you know it is not very far of the mark. Human beings have become so estranged in social media and self-publicity that any major world event will be ridiculed.
We saw it when Covid emerged. No one cared until it was on our doorstep.
I had great laughs trough out this film. Highly enjoyed this dark comedy with good performances from most of the cast. Shame it got panned. I think it is the most significant movie in a long time regarding us people as a "intelligent" species.

This is how intelligent and good satire is done. The movie, using a fictional scenario, holds up a mirror to western society in general and i think US society in particular, and my guess is that the very negative reviews of many of the professional media critics come a lot from people butthurt that their own deeply problematic flaws have been called out and exposed. What we see in the movie is exacly what we see in real life when we observe our society reactions to climate change, to COVID, and other crisis. Our society, from the elites (which are the most at fault but the problem isnt just them) to the ordinary social media users is prisoner of a culture of shallowness, shortshightedness, idiocy and self destructive greed. This movie has by some been called a spiritual successor of Dr. Strangelove and Idiocracy, i wholeheartedly agree. It is the mirror showing us our true face, and many of us who can't bare too look at it instead of facing the mirror choose to throw it away and, proving btw thepoint of the movie, don't look up. In his most ambitious film, McKay tries to avoid the disaster movie ("Deep Impact", "Armageddon") to look up to "Dr. Strangelove" adapting it to the epochal changes of our contemporaneity. But if Kubrick gradually caught fire with the transition from the grotesque to the final invective suspended between farce and iconoclastic satire, this film follows the opposite path: it starts full of hilarious gags and then freezes there, in a parodistic irony that in the second part does not know how to make genial leaps in quality and runs aground in the vicinity of the nihilism of "Melancholia".

But what lies on the surface is not what we are delighted with. Not once during its 2 hour-ish runtime did I feel taken-aback by an actors predictable nature, quite the opposite. Every performance is outstanding and well casted - even popular artists such as Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi arrive with some truly hilarious moments and quips, well acted.

What performances make up for is the often mixed tone - a comedic approach to an existential disaster film. While the first half struggles to keep a grip on its ideals, the second comes in swooping and delivers some of the best metaphors, jokes, and social commentary in movies yet - even if it tends to be extreme to the point of annoyance. With its sporadic editing, and amazing performances, Don't Look Up ends up being one of the best movies of this past year, delivering an experience with more meaning wrapped behind its obvious social commentary and well-written comedy - one of the few films that can singlehandedly create a loss of hope and a rebuilding at once.

The weakest part (for me) was the director's point of view being transparently visible; whether I agree, disagree, or am indifferent, because of politicization everywhere, I couldn't help but see some of the themes having a political charge. The themes might be judged differently simply because you can clearly see the director's words in multiple scenes (while in The Big Short, the message was less transparent despite being as biting). The strongest part was the sadness and emotional gravity of watching humankind squander our own existence. I didn't laugh once during the movie--it hit a little too close for me--yet I recommend it with a caveat that it might only be preaching to the choir. Expand

If you watch the film you notice the parallels to the present day more and more from minute to minute (especially to the climate crisis, but in some ways the film also fits the pandemic) and therefore a funny film also creates other feelings such as sadness or anger to wake up.

It is about an imminent end of the world, which is accepted with seeing eyes due to lower motives. In addition, there are various real-time problems, as well as the power of social media, the falling apart of truths, facts are no longer evidence, etc.

The film shows the United States in particular the past few years, which culminated in a catastrophic presidency. The connection to the real world works extremely well for me and was not too artificial for me, rather it blended in well with the scenery.
Only occasionally were the stylistic devices of popping pictures or video overlays cut too much and too quickly for me.

Also, strange camera settings were chosen over and over again, which were not always sensible for me or whose message I probably did not understand.

Apart from that, the cast was brutal and was able to convince in many cases: DiCaprio works perfectly for me, Cate Blanchett was one of the best, Meryl Streep and Jonah Hill were "amusing" most of the time (you always had a bit of "anger") "in my stomach), Chris Evans was absolutely world-class ..... amazing .... I only liked Jennifer Lawrence partially, it was sometimes too much for me because I couldn't believe her. The bash dude really pissed me off (he should too), but it wasn’t fun at all, it was just annoying. Timothee Chalamet could have been cut away and clearly shortened at this point.

Overall, the film was shot strangely, but in a certain way very cleverly written and put together, unfortunately a bit too long. I've switched off briefly one or the other time, but in the end it's pretty consistent.

7/10 drones.

This is a satire on real life things that some people just don't want to acknowledge. Your going to see a lot of bad reviews for trolling reasons, ignore them. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Adam McKay's "Don't Look Up" is abosultely one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. Almost every detail of the movie was either being metaphorical or being satirical, in both subtle and obvious ways. I recommend, when you watch this, to not watch it as just a movie, watch and as your watching try comparing what's happening to a real like event and/or person and it's very eye opening.

I will say, this is purely a movie for this current batch of humans alive now, it won't have the same feel to those without a first hand account of the state of the world.

You have to go into this movie with a very unbiased political mindset or you won't see the beauty of it. Every generation and political party are represented both positively and negatively. It really does make you realize how truly corrupt ALL sides are. There are no fake claims against anyone, or things over embellished, it really shows how we truly are.

Abosuletly incredible and well worth the watch.

A film like this presents that opportunity but this filmThe message this film is sending about climate change and how our leaders react to it is something I 100% agree with and it’s a topic that should be talked about more in our society. A film like this presents that opportunity but this film does it in the most out of touch and bland way possible. I found a majority of this film to be insufferable with Leonardo DiCaprio’s being the only thing keeping me going. He’s the only thing I really loved about this movie. His performance is great and the rest of the actors here do a good job as well with Jonah Hill and Jennifer Lawrence being great as well. Ariana Grande though felt so forced. Her performance wasn’t very good and it feels like they just shoved her in to say “Look guys it’s a singer that you know”. The scene where Leo screams about climate change is the best part of the movie and the film does very slightly improve from there but not enough to redeem it. The writing and jokes are pretty awful here. Every line has to end in some sort of the joke and the film never once got a laugh from me not even in a so bad it’s good way. It just goes on and on and on until the end of the film. The films presentation is so bland here. The camera is constantly shaking and moving around but there really aren’t any cool shots to look at. The visual effects for space look good and that was the only time I really thought the visuals looked nice. The editing here is some of the worst I have seen in a movie. It jumps all over the place and makes no sense at all. It’s all rapid fear and it becomes nauseating after the first half hour. I do wish the subject of climate change here was handled a lot better. It feels so in your face about it and I wish the film had presented it more subtlety. For me, messages in movies that stick the hardest are the ones that aren’t always obvious. They make me think but this didn’t make me think. It shoved the issue in my face and while I agree with it, it should have been handled more delicately. I don’t think I could honestly recommend this to someone. Pass on it and watch something else. Expand

That is why this stings so well, and is quite believable despite the satire. Leftists will love it, but I would imagine conservatives would be somewhere between indifferent...to outright animosity. (As the film is very critical of conservatives, but especially of the media and politicans.) As a film its a bit long, and can feel a bit repetitive during one montage about halfway in, but once it hits its stride to continues on to the climax quite well. Consistently funny bits throughout, and likely a satire classic, one of the best I have ever seen. Anyone who is not A. rich or B.a conservative will likely enjoy it, and its worth watching no matter what ones political affiliation. Its a very interesting story, with an amazing cast, a good amount of humor, and hits at real drama as well as it goes along. Pretty much: this film shows better than any film, what it feels like to be a Bernie Sanders supporters, or a climate activist in our wayward political times. So even conservatives..if they want to understand what that feels like, should watch this film, and can likely learn something. I would consider it a must watch in these present times, and a satire classic. Expand

Leonardo Dicaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill and yes, even Meryl Streep, this couldn't be anything other than a straight 10/10, right? 20 Minutes in, and I kept wondering, "how is it possible to have such a great cast, but make such a terrible movie?" The "comedy" seems to have been written by people who only studied the concept of "comedy" but were never exposed to comedy themselves. Political messaging was on the nose (which I really don't mind) but this was basically carrying the message: "Believe what I think or you are not even a human being." I lost my respect to every single actor in the cast, because it is clear that the only reason they signed up for this was because of the paycheck. This movie just shows that everyone can be bought if the price is right. I love disaster spoof movies but this truly is the worst movie I've ever watched in my life. Expand

With Leonardo DiCaprio as the lead, I was expecting this to be a serious take on the apocalypse genre, but instead, all we got was a film that tried to mix a serious plot and character into a generic 'satire' piece so generic it wouldn't look out of place in SNL.
It does absolutely nothing new and the writing in some parts is so surface level and is clearly trying to cater to Gen X humour. And the 'satire' is so in your face is like you don't have to think about what they are saying and they have clearly never heard of being subtle.

Also what was with that ending, especially the last scene. It was such a weird and unsatisfying way to end it.

At the very least, the 'serious characters' do a good job and the CGI looks nice

In short, I think this would have been much better if it was more serious, but instead, we get the blandest satire ever with a few good actors thrown in.

It would be a mistake to assume the purpose of Don’t Look Up is to further divide people along political lines. The film avoids using divisive labels and instead takes aim the entire corrupt system. Adam McCay holds nothing back in his satirical yet scathing critique of the reality we are living in. From the mainstream media to the political establishment, nobody is safe from the real-world criticisms this film is trying to convey and I loved every minute of it. No other film has so explicitly demonstrated the absurd ways that capital interests are able to control the levers of power in our society to serve their own interests at the detriment of everyone else. The cast were incredible and had me cracking up from start to finish. My only criticism was with the last minute of the film that took a jarring turn from non-fictional territory to total sci-fi. I think the movie would have been better off without that final scene. But I think it’s important to note that despite the film’s futile narrative and the ways it illustrates mankind’s inability to get out of its own way, Don’t Look Up still left me feeling like there is hope for us. After all, comedy is the medicine we take to cope with reality. Expand

One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Endless social commentary portrayed in an amusing way. Great dark comedy that hits hard, left me filled with every emotion

Fun, realistic, interesting, but too long. Could’ve been a little shorter. Although You’ll enjoy it

This is trash, it is mainly popular due to all the celebrities. It drags on for hours and it isn’t really funny at all. Whoever said this is the funniest film of 2021 is the same person who thinks all SNL skits are hilarious.

Accurate satire of our society. Definitely a movie to watch in decades and cry about how dumb we are. Great acting. One of the most important movies of our time, there is a good reason that particularly mainstream media is not in love with this movie. Watch it an you´ll know why...
