Peter Rainer said it best... These men found something that most people will never find...true love. It was absolutely the most convincing, passionate love story I have ever seen.

For the non ignorant people in the world this movie will move them deeply and make a statement about love that hasn't been said in a hetero movie in a long time. A study was done which found that most homophobes are the way they are because they are fighting repressed homosexual tendencies. This movie will bring them out in droves decrying it, but it shouldn't because it has more compassion and tact than most films. Heath Ledger deserves an Oscar hands down. Expand

Haven't seen it. But based on the fact that people are saying Oscar, I am very suspicious of their intentions. Is it because the film is great or because they have alternate desires to promote homosexuality. Very, very suspicious.

The acting is superb. The directing is restrained. These are people you feel you know; not actors playing parts. The biggest tragedy of "Brokeback Mountain" is that small-minded people insist it's "propaganda" for the "gay agenda". Those who could learn from it won't see it; those who could maybe see that love is indeed a force of nature by viewing this gorgeous and haunting film, never will because of preconceived ideas and/or ignorance. For those who open their hearst and minds, this movie is a gem. The most perfect example of heart-wrenching, doomed love since Romeo and Juliet. Expand

While the movie was beautiful and emotionally unerving I fgured out how they took a short story and made it into a full 3 hour film. The fist 20 minutes were so lsow i was about to leave but the movie did pick up the pace and moved me deeply.

It was one of the most thought provoking and moving film experiences I've had in recent memory. Ang Lee proves that he can tell a compelling love story without falling into the usual trappings of Hollywood formula. It isn't preachy. It doesn't fall into trite melodrama. It doesn't try to paint these guys as perfect heroes, but rather flawed humans caught in an impossible situation. Most importantly, it doesn't shy away from its depiction of same-sex love or the harsh realities of the time. It is truly is one of the most touching and realistic love stories ever told on film. Elated because I've been touched deeply by one of the most beautiful love stories I have ever known. Elated because of the raw courage and sensitivity and sheer brilliance that Gyllenhall and Ledger bring to this movie. Elated because I finally got to see one of my favorite writer's work *finally* done justice. But devastated. Just devastated. I won't say why, of course, because I don't want to give any spoilers. But all I can say is, if (and I do mean *if*) you think you can handle it without being a giggly child or a hung-up Christian conservative, please see this film. See it twice. Let it seep into your bones. Into your heart. Definitely the best movie of the year, and that's saying something. Expand

I am confident that this film will join the "canon" of memorable American films, one that will move viewers as much 40 years from now as on its opening day. Ang Lee has made a film that matches the best work of William Wyler's "the Best I am confident that this film will join the "canon" of memorable American films, one that will move viewers as much 40 years from now as on its opening day. Ang Lee has made a film that matches the best work of William Wyler's "the Best Years of Our Lives," and "The Heiress." Ledger gives a landmark performance that "wows" like Brando's in "On the Waterfront" and Dean's in "Rebel Without a Cause," Newman in "Hud," and indeed, Michelle Williams is as memorable as Patricia Neal's heartbreaking performance in "Brokeback" screenwriter McMurtry's "Hud." McMurtry has now written the screenplays for three great American contempoary Westerns -- "Hud," "The Last Picture Show," and now, in perhaps he and writing partner Diana Ossana's finest hour, "Brokeback Mountain." And finally, in a time when so few movies seem to be able to stand-and-deliver a gut-punching last line the likes of "Come on Jake, it's Chinatown," "Brokeback Mountain" contains the most richest last sentence of any film in a long, long time. It's the great writer Annie Proulix's words, slightly, sensitively repositioned in the narrative by McMurtry and Ossana and placed within a heartreching closing shot by Ang Lee and cinematogrpher Rodrigo Prieto. It moments like this, when every aspect of filmmaking comes together that reminds us why film is one of the greatest of the arts. Lee's film is one for the ages -- when, in future decades, the story won't appear particularly "controversial," like all great films, the emotional impact it has on viewers will continue to fee true and right. Like Annie Proulx's writing, the film was by equal turns rapturous and devastating. Both exquisitely beautiful and gut-punched painful. Do not go to this movie thinking that Ang Lee has thoughtfully sprinkled in some magic movie dust Like Annie Proulx's writing, the film was by equal turns rapturous and devastating. Both exquisitely beautiful and gut-punched painful. Do not go to this movie thinking that Ang Lee has thoughtfully sprinkled in some magic movie dust that will leave you feeling good. You will walk out feeling emotionally drained and conflicted. The conflicted feeling will last for days. My explicit advice is that the film be seen in an environment that will promote a feeling of intimacy. See it with someone you love. You will willingly bear your heart. You will feel vulnerable. Heath Ledger fully becomes Ennis del Mar. He is wracked by pain, frustration, fear and guilt that never completely leave him. Jake Gyllenhaal fully becomes Jack Twist. He has a kind of hopeful joy you feel you can drink in great healing gulps. But Ennis cannot be completely healed, he can only be temporarily relieved and the anguish that this causes Jack is fully realized through Jake. Ennis' and Jack's love is made fully evident by Heath and Jake in actions and expressions both great and small. The music of Gustavo Santaolalla is pitch perfect and the screenplay of Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana is flawless. I don't feel the need to elaborate on the performances of Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway or the cinematography of Rodrigo Prieto. They were each exceptional and have been praised elsewhere. They were not the focus of my concern although if they had not been so exceptional the film would have been crippled. Please, read the story. But expect to come away from the film with different impressions and understandings. Be prepared to think differently about Jack and Ennis. Be prepared to understand them more fully. I am honestly grateful to Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal and Ang Lee for so lovingly giving Ennis and Jack and their story to us and I will write them to say so. You will be changed by this film.
