The entire production was truly spectacular, from the haunting theme music (I bought the soundtrack) to the scenery, and all four principal actors deserved to win awards. The screenplay is utterly amazing. And the cinematography and music put an already perfect package into an even more perfect wrapping. I don't believe a better film has been made. It's definitely one of the most gut-wrenching, sad, heart-breaking love stories ever written or put on film. Annie Proulx was a genious for writing it. Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry were geniouses for adapting it. And Ang Lee, Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Williams, Anne Hathaway, Randy Quaid, Linda Cardellini, Anna Faris, and Scott Michael Campbell were both genius and courageous for making it. There a yet unknown "Brokeback Mountain" is a humane, quietly devastating film about forbidden love, a topic of great treatment among Ang Lee's films. Another masterful work of his that comes to mind is "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." There a yet unknown Ziyi Zhang was forced into a marriage because of her social status. Here Mr. Lee uses two gay cowboys in 1960s west to show the backdrops and tragedy that is forbidden love. It is based off of Annie Proulx's 1997 short story with the same title. Proulx's short story was quite a bit better. It allowed the reader to fully comprehend the pain and angst of these two men, something not even film geniuses, such as Larry McMurty, may have fully brought to the screen. The best example I can use to illustate this point is when the two men hit rock bottom. In her novella, a mere fifty-five pages, these men enjoy each others' company on a camping trip, wherein the film you only see the aftermath of this trip. Of course it is hard story to adapt to the screen, but an important one, and the performance Heath Ledger brings to his character, Ennis del Mar, is brilliantly subtle and highly nuanced. Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams, and Linda Cardeliini all give beautiful performances that will make interested viewers ache. A beautiful film that is also an important one. Sure enough - the slow pace might seem boring to those less observant, but this is not an action movie. It is a fine and true ringing story of two young men who find themselves in a situation that is not easy for them to handle. Love between two men is still "forbidden" in many peoples minds. Jack is aware (of course) of what people would think of him but that doesn´t stop him from trying to find his true love. I think that Jack in many ways has an innocence to him - he has still not seen the evil things people can do to those who are different. Ennis on the other hand is very afraid to be different - to be gay. The reason that Ennis is so afraid is because his father showed him at an early age what can happen to gay people. The acting in this movie is so wonderful - Heath´s and Jake´s in particular, and everything about the story and the setting is beautiful as well. This movie only contains a very short sex scene, with no nudity. It is a far cry from anything pornograpic. Yes, this film contains some adultery (like many, many, other films) but it`s not portrayed as something noble or good in any way. Alma´s heartbreak is one of the strongest scenes in this film! However both Ennis and Jack are good fathers who care for their children - the love Ennis has for his daughters is really beautiful to see. The lenght of this review perhaps suggests that I´m absorbed by this film - and that´s definately true!! I really have come to love this film, because it took my heart totally of guard! :-) An interesting thing: You never see the face of Ennis´s father in the flashback - he is very much an threatening person in young Ennis´s life. On the contrary Jacks mother is shown as a loving woman and a loving christian - notice the cross on the wall behind her as she speaks to Ennis. Perhaps a little hint to the religious right - Chistianity is about love - not hate! Expand

Never before have I seen a movie which portrayed true love being found and lost in such a masterly way. I have strong objections against the "gay cowboy" tag. It's not a story about gay people, it's a story about two people finding love where they least expected and they cannot do anything about it. Masterfully done, lee, portrays a part of our US history and culture many would soon like to forget. This story, although set in a mid to late century midwest as a 'cowboy movie', we can pull from it the parallels to many other closeted walks of life. The movie deals with the overwelming presure that this society puts on gay men to stay in the closet and not be true to themselves or the people in their lives. This movie could not have been done any better. Although it is a shame that two people who love eachother could not have shared more of their lives together without fear. Expand

The people who are giving this movie a high rating are obviously "followers"I have never been so disappointed in a critically-acclaimed, Oscar nominated movie in all my life! I thought Million Dollar Baby was bad, but this takes the cake. The people who are giving this movie a high rating are obviously "followers" who take on the opinions of people they deem important. Brokeback Mountain did not live up to any of the media hype. First of all, there was no romantic chemistry between these two cowboys, nor was there any reason to believe they are gay by orientation. Rather, they are stuck in the middle of nowhere for an entire summer, with only themselves. They are about as gay as two inmates stuck in the same cell for the rest of their lives. In other words, if I were isolated for months with a woman, she and I would most likely get it own, too-- BIG DEAL! Where's the romance in that? Ang Lee and the writers failed to show a genuine emotional bond develop between these two. Their attachment was driven by loneliness and libido, nothing else. Heath Ledger was a HORRIBLE actor! I could barely understand him throughout the movie. Being from Mississippi, I pride myself on understanding the thickest of country accents, but even I was lost numerous times whenever Ledger's character spoke. Jake G. wasn't too much better. The best actor--by far-- was the woman who played Ledger's wife. Now, another issue I have with the movie is that neither character showed any struggle with their attraction to one another as it related to them being married men living heterosexual lives. It was hard--in fact, impossible-- to root for them because they showed absolutely no remorse for cheating on their wives and abandoning their families. Never did I really get the sense that being "gay" was hard for them. We are expected to believe that 20 years passed between them, yet we never see any substance to their relationship. These are the same men who--despite the taboo nature of their affair--kiss passionately OUTSIDE the home of one partner whose wife and family are within sight. PLEASE!!! And, speaking of 20 years passing, the make-up artist assigned to this movie needs to be shot because none of the characters--except the children-- aged one bit. In the end, Ledger's character didn't look anymore than 10 years older than his 19-year old daughter. All in all, this movie was all about political Hollywood hype and not about cinematic quality. I would have given it a 1 for the few beautifully shot landscape scene of the mountain side, but after seeing so many of them transition after transition, that got old... so Brokeback gets a ZERO from me! The movie perpetuates the stigma that gay men have no remorse for infidelity and care more about getting their rocks off than being in meaningful, loving, committed relationships with each other. I am very gay friendly and I have seen true love be established and maintained by gay couples. For them it isn't about sex! Too bad America didn't get to see that in this movie. Thank God "Crash" got Best Movie and not his piece of junk! Expand

The best film of 2005 without a doubt. Good directing, acting, screenplay, score, and cinematography. It may have been robbed at the Academy Awards, but it is nonetheless a better movie than Crash.

While some complained that it was too slow, inexpressive, or there wasn't enough lead up to the love between Jack and Ennis, many of us thoroughly appreciated the complexities being masterfully woven for us on the big screen. I guess people want Splendor in the Grass type love, or loud verbalizations of "Oh Honey! I love you so!" or more sex, or crying scenes maybe. Such a thing would totally defeat a central theme of this film; the point was that these were two humans falling in a love that they couldn't speak of, and didnt' fully know how to explain. Hello? Wasn't that the point? But the fact that they reignite and can't forget each other only confirms the power of their love. I can't believe (well actually I can) the poster on here who said he hadn't seen the film until all "the buzz" goes away, then goes on to give the film a negative review. Its no wonder the real Jack and Ennises of the world feel they have to hide their love. This is not just some move about men who can't express themselves. Unfortunately, there are many people who the art of subtley is completely lost on, not to mention the inability to grasp what a complex film is. Some of us go the movies to experience a story, not just be "entertained" as one person said. If we want that, there is plenty out there. Its sad that every emotion or experience has to be verbalized in order for people to get it. I guess this is probably the reason why some people like Crash so much, it does all of your thinking for you. I guess the studies that say fewer and fewer Americans read anymore is true; reading makes a person think, and that increases critical thinking skills and that effects everything else we do, even how we view films. Kudos to Ang Lee and everyone involved in this film, for giving what many of us long for, a deep, thought provoking cinematic experience so masterfully woven and told. Expand

I'm a fan of Ang Lee's films, but Heath Ledger's performance almost ruined the movie for me. I thought his use of his face and mouth was exagerrated and distracting--he was hard to understand, and frankly, frustrating to watch. (I grew up with a grandad who was this "strong silent type," so maybe my expectations are unrealistic?! Grandad was a master...) However, Jake Gyllenhall's performance saved the movie, and the cinematography is beautiful. But, the intensity just isn't sustained, and the screenplay somehow doesn't bring to life the depth and breadth of all those years' hidden love. Something didn't work here, and I think it's in Annie Proulx's short story. The movie ultimately seems at its core like merely an overexpanded idea, relying on a foundation of supposed bleakness that's unexplored. It doesn't quite work, and it's a shame. I thought the Ice Storm understood and explored its era and culture much better, and I expected more from Mr. Lee. Expand

I thought after watching it I could tell my heterosexual friends to watch so they could have a better understanding of the gay life, but the movie itself is not worth the recommendation. I'm not saying that in the end everything should have worked out and they lived out their lives together, but the ending was terrible, I was struggling to even bring a tear to my eye because it was obvious that Ennes didn't share Jack's feelings about love and happiness, granted it would be difficult in those times to live a happy life as a gay couple, but Ennes also displayed little emotion at the end of the movie, and I really can't say anything else besides this movie was dissapointing. I would recommend "Beautiful Thing" , it more closely reflects the challenges a gay person faces in these times and it has a happier ending. Expand

I don't know why people don't question that. I understand how it is, but it saddens me, as a gay man, to have this garbage strewn onto the public without any explanation. The cinematography is good, the acting is good, the story is terrible, and it is very very very boring. I know slower moving movies that kept me more entertained that this garbage. How is it that someone slapped the easy tag of "gay cowboy movie" on this film, I wonder? Absolutely amazing! This movie was like a shot to the heart to me. It's a beautiful story about deep and genuine love, denied by society. How is it that someone slapped the easy tag of "gay cowboy movie" on this film, I wonder? "Brokeback Mountain" made me think about my own life, about the force of genuine feelings: those who are lucky enough to find true love in our short life should keep it like a treasure because this is ultimately what it counts. This film also made me think about the cruelty of some people, and the iniquities that homosexual people have suffered in different parts of the world, in different ages. I don't accept some criticism, according to which the characters are immoral because they are homosexual and cheat on their wives. Who said so didn't understand much of this film. [***SPOILERS***] Ennis has no tools to come to terms with his feelings and sexual attraction to Jack; he was broght up with a sense of horror towards homosexuality, which he considers as an aberrant condition, to be ashamed of and repress: this is unfortunately what was taught to him. The social background he comes from doesn't enable him to cope with this situation. He literally swallows his feelings and hardly ever expresses them (well, he hardly ever speaks). He desperately tries to forget about Jack and Brokeback Mountain and to live a "normal" llife with his wife. But, as the movie poster states, love is a of force of nature, and you cannot resist to it. All the characters, including the wives, are ultimately unhappy and defeated. But whose fault is it? Ennis's? I found this character deeply moving and absolutely realistic. This is Ang Lee's best film by far, and one the best movies I have ever seen; at least, the one who strikes the most: I can't get out of my mind its intense images, the laconic, incisive and beautiful lines, the haunting music. The pacing is calm: the writer of the original short story, Annie Proulx, and the two screenwriters, McMurtry and Ossana, managed to depict this peculiar and, at the same time, universal story (which is set in 1963-1983 Wyoming) with few but cutting masterstrokes. What makes this movie great is its perfect mixture of strong and poetic images (how could they give the Oscar for best cinematography to "Memoirs of Geisha"!? It's unbelievable...), its melancholic music, the meaningful silence and facial expressions of the characters, the scarse but mighty lines... There are no long dialogues: this would be irrealistic, since it's ultimately two young (and later mature) uneducated cowboys, grown in the narrow spaces of a provincial rural society. The actors' performances are absolutely stunning: Heath Ledger is in my opinion, the best of all, and it's a real shame he didn't get the awards he deserved! I was very disappointed too when I saw that the Academy Awards didn't give "Brokeback Mountain" the Oscar as best picture: I think this is outrageous and proves that the Academy Awards do not, too often, stand for quality, but, on the contrary, are the result of unpredictable marketing strategies or strange "ideologies". In this case, I think many of the voters acted out their prejudices against a still controversial theme, that is, gay love and homosexuality, in the secret of their voting booths. Yet, I am glad this masterpiece received dozens of other accolades, among which the "Leone d'Oro" (the golden lion) at the Venice Film Festival, back at the film's world premiere in September 2005: being Italian myself, I'm proud we paved the way for such an amazing piece of art. The movie is a sad one because the love of the main characters is forbidden and takes place outside their marriages. I would consider this a call to acceptance. If their relationship was accepted there would be no infidelity. As for the "hate crime scene" at the end... do you really think that life treats everyone fair.
I would call this movie a fair depiction of LIFE. Not every stroy end "happily ever after."

Best film I've seen in at least 3 years. Superior performances, superb cinematography, excellent screen play! Repeat viewings on the big screen are definitely in order!

This film is one of the very few films that inflicted changes in my life. It shot me right through! Two thumbs up for the film and hands down to Ang Lee.
