When I attended an advance screening, I was prepared to be disappointed, partly due to repeated viewings of the trailer that, I admit, left me in tears. While I did find the pacing of the near silent first scenes awkward on first viewing, made worse by poor sound in the theatre, I was quickly swept into the picture and transported. As the closing credits rolled I felt that I had just witnessed something politically important and cinematically poetic. The stunned silence of my fellow viewers led me to suspect that I might be right. Ang Lee has made a movie that refuses to capitulate to trend in any way. No bombast, no gratuity. McMurtry and Ossana beautifully fleshed out the tale just enough to capture the spirit and soul of these people trapped in a hell worthy of Sartre. Ledger is stunning - made more so by his virtual disposable mainstream performances prior to this - as his every utterance seems an effort to express something while giving away nothing. Gyllenhaal builds upon the stride forward witnessed in "Jarhead" and leaves us curious as to what comes next. Michelle Williams' performance puts her embryonic years at the Creek behind her - finely balancing a role that could have easily become unsympathetic. Hathaway slips beautifully out of her fluffy tiara persona into a crown of thorn - her young Texas spitfire turning brittle from the deprivation of a storybook ending daddy's little girl thought she deserved. I'm surprised to see some online reviewers focusing on this film as one that glorifies lies and adultery and I have to wonder if we saw the same movie. What I saw was a cautionary tale of the pain and chaos created when one is unable or refuses to reconcile with what they face in the mirror - a glorification of nothing. This is not a "gay cowboy" movie nor is it a "gay" anything movie. It's a spiritual movie about everyone's need to find their place in the world. Whether you choose to do it with an evangelical theory of God or with any other equally important reference is part of that journey. Expand

As a straight male and a devout Christian, I can honestly say that my wife and I loved this movie and plan to go with friends to see it again this weekend. I agree with whoever wrote "This movie was beyond brilliant." Love is a force of nature and of God. The two lead characters haunted me, One of the most moving films I've seen in years. A fine example of what wonderful writing can produce. The more I thought about the film, days after, weeks after seeing it, the more I loved it. The two lead characters haunted me, particularly Ennis, who broke my heart. Ultimately, the story works almost more as his tragedy, what is wrought when a life is lived beneath the weight of self-loathing and denial. I'd be interested to know if the few people so strident in their criticism actually saw the film. While they cast the movie as some agenda piece of far left Hollywood, they make their own agendas all too apparent. It is important to remember that this film took 7 years to get made. Studios and directors didn't want to touch it because of its subject matter, despite the script having the reputation as the best unmade movie floating around. Why must every movie or work of art having to do with gay characters automatically be labled as having an agenda? Why can't it just be what it is - a work of art? Judge it on those mertis, not on outside forces that have nothing to do with the film. The reason this film works as well as it does is because its only agenda and allegience is to these two characters. And these two men come so painfully alive, that their tragedy sears the heart and mind. In the end, for me, it is a classic love story, maybe the best modern love story to be made in some time, because it utilizes all the hallmarks of tragic love with wonderful restraint and sincerity. This This movie was brilliant based not on it's story line but on the acting of Heath Ledger. I think the content will be in debate within the Marlboro sector, rednecks, rough necks, and anyone who has judgement against homosexuality. This movie caught me by surprise because I felt the same as Heath's wife when she witnessed him and Jack engaging in more than just a handshake and hug when meeting each other, I too felt like seeing two manly men kissing quite foreign and odd. It was like imprinting a child's first view at something for the first time, you look with amazement and no judgement, simply something brand new, almost like seeing a martian. I can't remember what the scenery of the movie depicted because the character reference by Heath made you dumb found. Expand

In addition to its many, many genuine excellences, Ang Lee's so-called "gay cowboy" movie is also notable for providing me with the most simultaneously entertaining and disturbing time I've had watching a movie preview trailer In addition to its many, many genuine excellences, Ang Lee's so-called "gay cowboy" movie is also notable for providing me with the most simultaneously entertaining and disturbing time I've had watching a movie preview trailer since junior high school. The preview came on just before Syriana (a movie which, blaming as it does all the world's evils on American oil cartels, you'd hardly label as one especially attractive to a "red-state" audience) and when it became apparent that Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) were going to share more than a can of beans, about twenty-five people in the audience, almost as one, simultaneously responded with a loud, high-pitched cry of "Eeeee-YEW!!!" Imagine that: a movie NOT dealing with horror or torture whose trailer reduces a group of seemingly intelligent, well-mannered adults to a bunch of 7-year-old girls reacting to a waterbug skittering across the basement floor at their Brownie meeting! Despite this and the recent news of a Utah multiplex suddenly yanking it despite the fact that it was making money there as everywhere (one word to their management staff: IDIOTS!) this film, despite its instant status as a Jay Leno punchline, is affecting and moving people all over the country who are willing to give it a chance, and it's doing so for several very simple, basic reasons: it's a beautifully written and directed, spectacularly shot, superbly acted piece of great storytelling that stays with you no matter what your political, religious or sexual persuasion. (Even conservative critic Michael Medved praised it, although part of this may stem from his awareness that his attempts to sabotage Million Dollar Baby last year by revealing its secrets in print and on TV might just have "tipped it" enough to win it several Oscars last year, and he's not making THAT mistake again.) Quentin Tarantino said at Cannes that he liked Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 not because he agreed with its stance but because he found it supremely entertaining, and regardless of your views on homosexuality, Brokeback Mountain works as a classic, old fashioned star-crossed and circumstance-separated lovers' "weeper" in the tradition of Back Street, Waterloo Bridge and many other movies familiar to your grandparents and those who like to tape Turner Classic Movies at 3 in the morning. (A more recent film parallel? Well, perhaps 2004's The Notebook...up to a point.) Writers Annie Proulx, Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry (whose Lonesome Dove is undoubtedly much loved by some of the very same people who want nothing to do with his latest effort) may have specific viewpoints, but they're not doctrinaire: I think it's extremely possible for Brokeback Mountain to speak as strongly to conservative Christians as it does to gay activists. Keep in mind that the tragedy of Ennis's and Jack's long-running, clandestine affair extends to their wives and loved ones, and that nobody in the movie is patronized or caricatured. (Jack's wife, played by Anne Hathaway as a different kind of "princess" than she did in a pair of Disney movies, comes closest, but this is negated in a poignant, self-aware monologue near the end; Michelle Williams and Linda Cardellini as women in Ennis's life are simply heartbreaking.) It can also be argued that ranch boss Joe Aguirre (Randy Quaid), who hired Ennis and Jack to protect grazing sheep from wolf attacks, fires them not only because of their affair, but because they weren't doing their job--and that if the two cowboys had actually followed their hearts once down from Brokeback, Ennis's terrific, immensely sympathetic daughter (Kate Mara) would never have existed. Brokeback Mountain works superbly not only as an offbeat love story but as a powerful meditation of how entire lives are permanently altered by one impulsive action. Robert Frost's famous poem "The Road Not Taken" comes to mind not just in light of what would've happened if Jack and Ennis had become full-time lovers, but alternately (and in light of the turns everybody's lives end up taking) what the results would've been if the two guys hadn't reacted to boredom, loneliness, horniness and That Indescribable Something Else...and each of them had stayed on his side of the tent. I think that a lot of viewers are unaware of the paradigms established by small, isolated towns in the Western United States, so I think on some levels the film was trying to dissiminate that. Regardless, I thought the movie as a whole was poignant and touching; I expected the love sequences to be more romantic and sensual, but I thought that the delicacy portrayed by the characters was appropriate. I think the thing that really stuck with me for the movie was the dynamic development of Ennis from a taciturn individual to one who learns how to emote. It's a sad story and I left the theatre with a sense of resentment and heartbreak. The movie ended with Ennis looking at the postcard and Jack's clothes---I believe that the transformation of Ennis's love into something which made him human was endearing. I don't know whether this serves as a warning to people who live risqué and latent lives or more of an exposé about homosexuality in small town America, but it's certainly worth a watch. Expand

I guess that's not an entirely incorrect description of Brokeback Mountain, but it's also insultingly reductive and simpleminded; nobody's referring to Munich as "the dead athlete movie" or The Passion of the Christ as "the crucified Jew movie." Other ways to more accurately describe Ang Lee's extraordinary new movie: haunting, sad, profound, compassionate, artful, and entertaining. For about five years now, Heath Ledger has seemingly been perched to become The Next Big Thing, but nothing he has done to date - mostly small roles in good movies and big roles in bad ones - remotely prepares you for his astonishing work here as the stoic, inarticulate Wyoming ranch hand circa 1963 who shares a night of passion with a kindred soul (Jake Gyllenhaal) that turns into a deeper love that manages to survive marriages (Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway are terrific as the wives), societal pressures that barely allow them to admit to themselves who they really are, and the long months and years they sometimes have to wait to see each other. The screenplay by Diana Ossana and the great Larry McMurtry (The Last Picture Show, Lonesome Dove), based on a short story by E. Annie Proulx, is purposefully spare and understated, while the stunning outdoor cinematography of Rodrigo Prieto is of distinctly Oscar caliber. Forget the controversy, forget the jokes, forget whatever reservations or prejudices you may have: this is a great piece of filmmaking, and a story I suspect will stick with you long after leaving the theatre. I found Brokeback Mountain trite and frustrating, often boring, using more gay stereotypes than I like to see: punitive fathers, wives who suffer in silence (until they blow), alcoholism, self-hatred and denial, violent death by homophobes (I know, I know, stereotypes are often rooted in reality!) and many cinematic stereotypes as well - long shots of snow-capped mountains, full moons, empty decaying towns blowing in the wind, etc. I was never quite convinced by the "love" between these two - (sexual attraction, yes, but I couldn't figure out what else) or the motivation for Jack and Ennis enduring 20 mostly miserable years during a period of great national change. On some levels I found this an anti-gay movie (emphasis on depression, punishment and deprivation) rather than a sensitive portrayal of a loving, though doomed, relationship. I did like the scenes of the sheep being moved. Expand

(thx matthew shephard rip off storyline) . there is nothing inspirational or motivating about this film. as a gay man this film leaves me with a huge feeling of disgust at the overused and offensive stereotypes (while the limp wrist lisping type is totally avoided, you still have closeted tragic love and a relationship based on carnal proximity and no spiritual or real communication oriented committments) this is a horrible film overall. 3 points just because it's gay themed and "hollywood" everything else that basically matters in this film is absent and it's found lacking. Being a straight male, I can say this is one of the most beautiful, heart-wrenching movies I have ever seen in my life. It was also just as beautiful to see a huge mix of young and old, men and women and the movie theater.

The film's relative dryness does not make it inert or lifeless but all the more subtly depressing and impactful. amazing performances, great film. Expand

Some (though not all) of the criticism I have read of this film serve as a startling reminder that ignorance, prejudice and hatred are still out there (which, in a way, only further justifies the point of this film). In 2006 there are still Some (though not all) of the criticism I have read of this film serve as a startling reminder that ignorance, prejudice and hatred are still out there (which, in a way, only further justifies the point of this film). In 2006 there are still people who would exclaim, "This movie is sick! Why do most movies in this day and age have to be about homosexuality? Is nothing sacred anymore? What's next lesbian nuns?" Or, "Sick and twisted. If you are a heterosexual male, save your money for anything else." Only the inherent cliches and ignorance inherent in those opinions ensures they are not to be taken too seriously. It's sad. But it does something else: it reminds me that, whilst we may rightly proclaim the universality of this story and how accessible it is to everyone, it IS still an important film for gay people at this time in history. I found Brokeback Mountain to be a starkly frightening film in it's intelligence about the dangerous contexts (always implicit, nothing more is needed) in which such love would have existed. It leaves the viewer with so much to think about. all in the details and inferences, which will make it worth seeing again. In it's profound belief in the universality and power of love, though, it is also uplifting and extraordinary. I don't think the film is about something to applaud so much as it is about something worth believing in and worth fighting for. Expand

The It would be impossible to go see this movie without knowing it is the "Gay Cowboy" movie, all the pre-release media blitz has made that obviously clear to everyone on the planet and beyond, that's o.k., it's good for business. The genius of this film, however, is that after 15 minutes it becomes a plain & simple love story about wanting and longing between two people who can't be together for their own reasons, be it denial or fear or even shame. Everything about this film is extraordinary! Rodrigo Prieto's camera work is epic, the simple guitar score is haunting and the acting, oh my the acting. Michelle Williams gives the same small, understated performance that won an Oscar for Beatrice Straight in Network, Jake Gyllenhaal, on the heels of Jarhead and Proof, shows enough talent here to make him not only an a-list actor but an Oscar nominee as well. But the true find of Brokeback Mountain is none other than teen heartthrob Heath Ledger, who gives a performance so achingly beautiful I really think he will give Philip Seymour Hoffman a run for this years Best Actor Oscar! He emerges from this film the way Johnny Depp did in Ed Wood. Its simply a miraculous piece of work. The only reason I did not give this film a 10 is the last 15 minutes of the film. When Jack gets the postcard returned to him, it might as well have been stamped "Wrap It Up" Other than that, it's as near a masterpiece as it can be and, to me, seems unbeatable for the Best Picture and Best Director Oscar come March. Bravo, Mr. Lee!! Expand

But in so many ways 'Brokeback Mountain' is my story too. We all can feel the inchoate longing that Ennis and Jack experience because their love can't be acknowledged within a society bent on thwarting it, through early lessons of hatred, misguided marriage expectations and, if need be, murder. The film is remarkably faithful to Annie Proulx's spare and touching story, with appropriately sensitive added exposition of the effects on Jack and Ennis's wives and families. It was as exhilarating and heartwrenching the second time I saw it as it was on the first, but on the second visit I was much more able to notice the depth of nuance in all its aspects -- writing, performance, direction, editing. I find that I'm still moved almost to tears that such a truthful story has been so well told. I doubt that my second viewing will be my last; I hope that even hardened hearts might be able to understand if not identify, and perhaps soften a bit. Expand

Substitute a female for one of the male leads and taglines containing the words: 'predictable,' 'trite,' 'sentimental,' and 'saccharine' would be the order of the day, but no because this film Substitute a female for one of the male leads and taglines containing the words: 'predictable,' 'trite,' 'sentimental,' and 'saccharine' would be the order of the day, but no because this film supposedly challenges social mores and love against the odds (or whatever) it's suddenly a 'masterpiece.' Is there nothing that will end Hollywood's love affair with these grinding behemoths released at the end of each year as a means to garner awards from judges who are blindsided by anything that seems even remotely 'epic,' 'arthouse,' or 'daring,' and to redeem actors at the 12th hour after they have trudged through a year of less-than-spectacular roles as jive-speaking knights from the middle ages and crossdressing undercover cops? I find nothing heroic or ennobling about these characters. It's not just because the central relationship itself immediately alienates anyone whose buttons aren't pressed by watching two rustic types fondle each other in the prairie, but because their lack of control over their carnal whims and consequent adultery (compounded by cooly calculated deception) makes them morally repugnant. It's not hard to divine the propagandistic intent behind this preduction - after all, it's not the first time for Lee - but I really do think that adapting a pamphlet on 'Homosexaulity and Tolerance' would have made for a more engaging film; it certainly wouldn't have been any more disposable.
