Gay cowboys are far from my idea of an American love story. Only another attempt of Hollywood to stuff the gay lifestyle down our throats. (no pun intended) As much as they would like to think this is the norm, it is not, and it is not acceptable.

Impressive performances by both Heath and Jake, and the story itself is touching. However, there's a lack of cohesiveness to the film that confuses. Mostly, I just wonder what all the ballyhoo is about!

An overcontrived love movie. Honestly, politics aside, it's just a love story but with a guy instead of a gal. Rated so high out of fear that they'll be accused of being a homophobe. Really, nothing special here.

I found this movie emotionally wrenching and very well made. However I think that it is an exaggeration to call this movie a masterpiece. In my mind it is a well-crafted assemblage of quality elements (cinematography, acting, screenplay) but I found this movie emotionally wrenching and very well made. However I think that it is an exaggeration to call this movie a masterpiece. In my mind it is a well-crafted assemblage of quality elements (cinematography, acting, screenplay) but somehow does not quite gel into a whole. I think this leads to a captivating movie experience for many as we can on our own "assemble" the satisfying movie experience that we each want to see in the movie. For me like a few other site users, there was not enough chemistry between Jack and Ennis, not just of the physical kind. I think that in particular Jack's character remained undeveloped...Jake Gyllenhall either was not given enough from the script or he didn't quite make the character seem plausible. This may seem to be a small detail but I kept on noticing that Jake's eyebrows looked plucked which I think of as anomalous given the time and place in which the story occurred. Nowadays it looks strange when a man plucks his eyebrows...it would have been 100x stranger in early 1960's Wyoming. Was that supposed to be a signal of gayness to other men? Why such an obvious one? This, to some minor, incongruity signals to me the more general problem of how to understand the main characters' and in particular Jack's motivation. He didn't seem to be a convincing character, more of a cypher. Expand

The Brokeback is one of the great films in recent memory. With understated brilliance, Ang Lee carefully follows the crossing paths of two men and their families through a story of love which is both conventional and groundbreaking. The repression of true feelings is not a new theme of a film, but this Anne Proulx story with two male protagonists as lovers is new ground for motion pictures. Not a political film, Brokeback Mountain combines all the best of writing, acting, directing and production and invites the viewer to join a beautiful if not painful journey through the lives of these characters. Special appreciation to Heath Ledger for his creation of an intriguing character from words on a page. We have not seen this level a character work in film for years. Lee's Eastern philosophical touch(scene earlier to great effect in Ice Storm and Crouching Tiger) is not only a reprieve from the expected Hollywood hammering of violence, Special Effects and stock characters but a perfect match for the understated characters of the McMurtry and Ossana screenplay. The reverence and awe with which Ang films the ever-fading "west" and his characters could not be accomplished by any Director of which I am aware. Most film makers today set out to create a great blockbuster which will surely "blow them away" at opening weekend box office. Brokeback Mountain is a simple story of finding, experiencing, and losing love told gently with great compassion. It is Masterpiece ranking with Hitchcock's Vertigo and Rebecca, Allen's Another Woman or Interiors, the Merchant/Ivory adaptations of the EM Forster works, or dare I add the similarities f Brokeback to the early works of Cimino(?)---all tackling the wide open range of passion in the human spirit. But this time, Brokeback Mountain attempts to lasso the human spirit with ranch-handing Shepherds who call themselves Cowboys. Expand

This is a rare quality film. Jake Gyllenhaal is a brilliant optimistic isolated heart broken Jack twist, Heath ledger is a stunning portrait of turmoil and self hatred, Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway show a range beyond any of their previous work portraying 2 different versions of a wife who cannot connect with the man whom she loves. The energy behind everything that goes unsaid is really the underlying constant in our own hearts. Sexuality is this films novelty but by no means it's limit. The story is presented as it lay. No cause, no reason, no blame, no answers... just like real life. The images are beautiful, the plot atypical, and the effort by all involved incredible. For all who make comments about its characters without having seen the film, you are a bigot. You are no different from someone who discriminates against race, class, sexuality, disability, gender, height, weight, number of hairs on your head, or level of education. I saw it a week ago and I'm still devastated by it. The relationship between Jack and Ennis was so profound, so deeply moving, that you can't help but wish they could stay on Brokeback Mountain forever. And that is where the movie becomes complex. They love each other so much that it becomes a sickness and yet the audience sees the pain their relationship inflicts upon their families, in particular Ennis' wife. But there is no villian. There is no one to blame and in spite of their faults, you want more than anything for Jack and Ennis to be together. The acting has no comparison as this is the first movie I've seen that doesn't depict gay men as either dying from AIDS or playing the caricature of a feminine "fairy" that is only around for your amusement. I imagine the film is uncomfortable for some people because Jack and Ennis are are raw, and human. You can't laugh at their gayness. Rather you relate to their story because we are all human. You long for their happiness as you sit in the theatre and watch their story unfold. You realize that what you want most is to experience just a breath of what Jack and Ennis shared with each other. You realize that what they had was special and it's so incredibly painful to see them come down from the mountain each time. And finally, you suddenly realize that you want nothing more than to love another person just as passionately. Expand

Although many who have seen "Brokeback Mountain" have complained on about it on moral grounds, it presents a real vision of what mutual attraction between males meant in the early sixties prior to the beginning of the gay liberation movement in America. Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist are not gay-identified males in the modern sense of the phrase; they are two straight-identified males with a problem to hide. This is a break-through film, not because it shows gay sexual acts or two men kissing, because it treats the emotional damage wrought by a machista society that responds to same-sex love with derision and violence. It is sad to read negative comments by reviewers sitting astride their high moral horses criticizing the film for supposedly "glamorizing gay love between two queer cowboys." Too often those same moral values are discarded when it comes to films that glorify criminal activity or graphically depict the murder and/or multilation of humans. Then, it is called "realism" where the sadism, violence, and straight sex are part and parcel of selling that vision of reality to a public eager to consume it. "Brokeback Mountain" paints a slow, deliberate portrait of the effects of deliberately repressing the strongest of human desires: sex and love. The phrase "instant classic" in not hyperbole in the case of Ang Lee's stunning work of art. Expand

World literature is full of tales of thwarted passion. Gay love needs to be more tenderly presented by people you care for, and in this movie it seems more like lust among the shepherds. The real issues involving families with children by the gay lovers is only superficially explored and the script seems dry and lacking in passion. It`s not the actors fault but this message needs a real loving and profound script. Beautiful scenery and cinematography, reasonable depiction of herding sheep on summer range, good cast, and fair acting My wife & I just saw this film and we both came away generally bored, unmoved, and feeling duped by all the hype. Beautiful scenery and cinematography, reasonable depiction of herding sheep on summer range, good cast, and fair acting (nothing special, as others seem to think). BUT: The story is just not engaging. There's no chemistry between the lovers, no flirting nuances, no buildup. In fact, their initial lovemaking seems more like an impulsive act of rape. Like one of the other reviewers herein, I think I must have missed the "love" part (maybe I dozed off). And much of the rest of the story is either implausible or uninteresting. Will they finally get together and live happily ever after? We simply don't care. One of the "great films of all time"? No way. Even if you narrow the category to gay films, it's not even in the same league as "The Crying Game". I'm always perplexed when I'm in such disagreement with the reviewers, especially the "user comments" on this site, with which I normally agree. So I analyzed the data a little more carefully. For the weekend of Jan. 13-15, BBM (in its 6th week) grossed $5.8M, which is in ninth place. Seems odd that, by now, word of mouth for this monumental film would be doing at least as well as "Memoirs of a Geisha" or "Fun With Dick & Jane". I know, "there's no accounting for taste". I also looked at the Top 10 films of 2005 where, based on critics' reviews, BBM is #6. Excluding BBM, the average number of User Comments for the other top 9 films is 43. BBM, on the other hand, has over 460 User Comments. Seems odd that a film that is generating so much positive feedback from users would not be doing better at the box office. Or could it be that the ballot box is getting stuffed by folks with an agenda, trying to generate interest and help its chances for an Oscar. Just a thought. Expand

This film draws you into the lives of Ennis and Jack within minutes. Following the story through this film, it's easy to see why it has gotten so much hype. The topic is controversial - a love and bond that can't ever fully be enjoyed because of the stigma of gay love especially dating as far back as their relationship began (1963). My heart ached during this film because Lee forced me to empathize for characters I may not have normally been able to. Expand

I hold them all in my heart and lovingly do so. Ang Lee is a true master and the film is as brilliant as it is breathtaking. The script is pared down perfection and the performances are carried out with nuanced subtlety. Ennis and Jack come together to tell their story with such precision and perfection that I am almost moved to tears as I write this. Heath Ledger embodies Ennis in a way that lets us feel the vibration of his soul in every heartbeat, his and ours. And Jake Gyllenhal as Jack embodies the hope and enduring spirit of every peson who dares to really be true to himself in tehe world. The movie haunts me not because of it's tragic theme but because of Jack and Ennis's love and the exquisite way Ledger and Gyllenhal bring it to us. I treasure this film and I predict it will become one of the great films of the 21st century. Expand

Can this really be veridical? - truthful? - accurate? Or does this extraordinary ranking merely reflect the PC sensibility - the Gay "cowboy" romance everybody MUST love - that afflicts the latte drinking New York Times reading chattering class? I'm betting the latter. That doesn't mean this isn't worth seeing. But I remember when films about "men who couldn't talk about their feelings" were literally a dima dozen, a few decadesa go. And whom am I to say that new generations shouldn't redicover a timeless theme in a new setting? Ang Lee is also one of our best directors. SO why not see it now? I will see it, but only long after the buzz is gone and the self-righteous moralizing of the Leftist zombies who monopolize reviewing - probably when I can see it for two bucks. Why? Many friends say the short story by Annie Proulx is considerably better. Even reviewer "Neepy" writes "it is too safe. I didn't feel much chemistry, bonding, or even lust between the two cowboys." Thoughts others have echoed - it simply isn't as good as it's made out to be. It simply isn't as good or believable as Ang Lee's "The Wedding Banquet," another gay themed film about tragic love. So why do reviewers love a film that indulges in all the negative stereotypes about westerners and Mexicans? Because gays are a priviledged "minority." This is the "Philadelphia" or "Angels in America" of our time. The lemmings are out this season, ruining a good film for those who aren't bird watchers. Too bad they don't simply leave their agenda driven baggage at home and simply let the art speak for itself. Expand

For those with open minds, the movie offers a lot to think about. As I read the reviews below, I couldn't help but think the following.....for those saying if the movie wasn't about "gay" cowboys it wouldn't be acclaimed is like saying if Titanic wasn't about a ship sinking it wouldn't have been such a success. For the obvious Christians who slammed the movie because of its content (yes, I am a straight male Christian with a family), this movie offered great insight into those who are different than most of us and how those people are affected by the intolerence of the rest of us. Before you praise Christians so much remember...the guys at the end who murdered Jack probably called themselves Christians.

Good insightful movie. If you keep an open mind you'll learn. If you don't keep an open mind, don't bother seeing it and go see Hostel (you won't have a problem with that movie).

WAKE UP, sluggards--that is the point. What is portrayed in this movie is a tragedy because, if it had been a man and woman, it wouldn't have been an issue. Can't you even sense a prejudiced, homophobic comment when you utter it? I heard Gael Garcia Bernal say, when asked about whether playing a gay character was hard, say something like "I never understand that question. Gay characters have sex. I have sex too. Gay characters love. I love too. Why is it that no one asks me if it would be hard to play a murderer, a rapist, a torturer?" Ennis and Jack should have been able to have a relationship without fearing reprisal, rejection, self-loathing, and intolerance. It doesn't take reading too many of these comments here to understand that 1963 and 2006 aren't all that different after all. Expand

Problems I had were the forced parallelism between the two leads, the obvious problem found in shooting the film over a span of something like 20 years (little to no ageing of found in the lead characters), and the poor musical score (country tinged, slow acoustic, used way too much.) At some points, the movie is fantastic (the scenes from the original Brokeback winter, and the final ten minutes or so) but, the movie never convinces the viewer of its greatness.
