A beautiful and tragic story of a love denied by society, set in 1963 Wyoming. A stunning performance by the actors; an incredible script; Ang Lee at his best. It tore my heart. The best movie I have ever seen. Haunting and moving.

I saw the movie about a month ago and I just could not wait to see it again that I went to see again the following day. After a month, I am still shaken by this story and the incredible performance of Heath Ledger. Can't wait for the DVD.

For those who think the movie is "slow" or "boring", I suggest that you stop hitting the next button on your iPod and try reading a book or doing something that may force you to actually use some patience. For those who think the movie For those who think the movie is "slow" or "boring", I suggest that you stop hitting the next button on your iPod and try reading a book or doing something that may force you to actually use some patience. For those who think the movie wouldn't be praised "if the love story was about a man and a woman", you're completely missing the point. There are similarities, but major differences/consequences/reactions/problems between gay and straight relationships. For those who thought Jack & Ennis were "selfish" and that the film ignored how they hurt the women in their lives by ... did you even see the film? Did you not see Michelle Williams in tears, talking about how she knew Ennis never went fishing? Did you not see Linda Cardellini in tears, telling Ennis that "girls don't fall in love with fun"? The movie deals with the hurt the women end up with. Ennis and Jack's love can't be expressed because of the stigma of being gay where they are and the circumstances of their lives. After all, if you thought that revealing your love for somebody could get you beaten or killed... you might keep it a secret too. Expand

Let us PLEASE get past that they were cheating on thier wife, in their hearts they were not cheating, they loved each other and in a different time and place, they would not of tried to get married and "Be Strieght", they would of just been together and not went on with a fake cover up life. OK, I am getting to emotional talking about it. Expand

It is a story of what might have been (and what, in my opintion, SHOULD have been), and a very human story of the pain we bring ourselves when we deny our hearts' most primal desire: to love whom that heart directs us. This film will surely outlast any contrived or real "shock and awe" to be remembered as a real trailblazer, and long noted as the achingly exquisite piece of art that it is, whether or not it wins even one Academy Award! If this had been a film about a man and a woman, the critics would not be "emotionally affected" by the heartbreaking story of two people in love- they would be condemning the selfish nature of their affair and the impact this would have on their families (wives/husbands and children). Because this has gay characters (and played by two straight actors i might add...since when were REAL gay actors unemployable in Hollywood???) all of a sudden it's a masterpiece. For heaven's sake let's all get a grip! Not once has anyone stopped to think of the emotional pain and hurt inflicted on those wives in this film..that's the most reprehensible thing about it. The film focuses on the cowboys' love and ignores the pain, betrayal and grotesque selfishness exemlpified by the two leading guys on thier wives and children. Grotesque. Horrible. Awful. Since when was infidelity, cheating and betrayal noteworthy? Everyone makes choices...all this film showed was that these two guys were not MAN enough to make their choices and live by them. Their guilt and depression are clearly attributed to their pathetic sense of themselves. NO sympathy for those characters...only the women who yet again...seem to have been left by the wayside. It looks like soon homosexual rights will outdo womens' rights. What a sham. Expand

But Heath's character did. [***Spoilers***] In the movie his father showed him a dead rancher that had been killed because he lived on the ranch with another guy. This made Heath's character scared to give into his feelings. I thought that it stayed very true to the feelings and the hardships that gay couples have to face. I left the theatre a bit underwhelmed despite the FANTASTIC cinematography and scenery (I grew up in the Rocky Mountain west, and it made me incredibly homesick). The reason I was underwhelmed was probably because the film is so understated: at times I found myself doubting what Jack and Ennis saw in each other, or if, indeed, any of the characters had much passion for anything at all. In hindsight, all the little things that have sat in my mind add up -- statements like "We've got no reins on this one" and "How do I quit you?" (paraphrasing); the quiet and wholly affecting despair of the wives, Ennis' in particular; etc. And in fact, part of the theme is precisely about living a life with the passion leached out of it -- which not only Jack and Ennis were forced to do, but their wives and even, apparently, Jack's parents; grinding poverty can be limiting just as homophobia can. For such a mild-seeming film (on the surface), it wrestles with the deepest emotions amazingly well -- despair and pain and passion and love and hope and fear. And, mostly, it's just about a society that warps everyone trapped in it, with characters that you sympathize with totally even as you want to scream at them and the situation they are stuck in. You can only watch, heart pounding, as the movie veers towards its inevitable conclusion. It's definitely a good movie on first viewing, but becomes truly great in the emotional resonances it sets up long after you left the theatre. Expand

I went into openminded, seeking for some artistic value. There was none. The only critical acclaim was that it took two actors who thought they were performing breakthrough roles, and really, it was just Sodom & Gomorrah the sequel. There was no artistic value, there was no story, there was no goodness, there was no epic quality, it was just bad. Michelle Williams deserves some credit for playing a tormented woman. But where in this world are movies going if this gets marks above decent movies like Crash, or Walk the Line, or Cinderella Man. Movies that actually leave you feeling somewhat replenished instead of drained, dirty, and depressed.

The slow unfolding of the film, i found, offers the viewer to really get lost within the storyline, and I was pleased that the near nonexistant sex scenes did not isolate the viewer to any serious degree. How anyone could have left the cinema untouched is simply beyond me. I saw it again the very next day to crosscheck my viewpoint. aside from very minor unexplained moments in the film, I would concider it near perfect. Expand

Given the hype, critical acclaim, and the numerous award nominations, I have to say this film is a fraud. Don't believe the hype. The cinematography is good and that's about it. Given that this story is about two men and given the length of the film, I was surprised that the primary characters are not even well-developed. When one dies, you don't even care b/c there's no heartfelt interest in him. Heath Ledger as best actor??? I couldn't believe how bad he was, unless you think talking without moving your lips is difficult. I had to stop myself from laughing out loud at his acting during one dramatic, emotional scene. I could not wait for this movie to be over ... it is soooo boring. After seeing the movie, I do believe a few that I've heard opine that this film's critical success is due to a liberal political agenda. That's the only thing that makes sense, b/c it's not that good. OK at best. Expand

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN AN IMPOSIBLE LOVE
Before I saw the movie, I thought that homosexual people were weird and disgusting. When I heard about this movie and all the awards, I went to see it with my mom (AND I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE bad). This movie that only costed 11 million $ comparing to King Kong with 209 millon $ was great. From the cinematography...to the way they treat the story. Ang Lee is a Great Director (Crouching Tigger, Hidden Dragon), and after making a bad movie (Hulk), he continued the good road. Gylleenhaal used to be a bad actor (The day After Tomorrow) But in THIS movie...
The Simple and short story was simply wonderful and the rest of the cast LEDGER, WILLIAMS & HATHAWAY (used to be a bad actress to ''Princess Diaries 1&2). Even thow i havent seen Crash, Capote, Good Night and good luck or Munich yet, I hope this little BUT GREAT independent picture will win the top price, best director, best screenplay, actor (lead & Sup), Actress (sup), music (even thow I loved THE CONSTANT GARDENER'S music & The PRIDE & PREJUDICE piano pieces) & Cinematography

The desperation of daughters for distant daddies. A dirt-poor life of deprivation so complete that a man never expects to get what he wants. Masculinity and the tradeoffs men have to make: if you've got a wife and the appearance of heterosexuality, it's okay to use a carving knife. The best movie in recent memory. One could feel the longing Ennis & Jack had for each other, but were unable/unwilling to express. The ending felt haunting in that Ennis finally realized what he had missed and lost.

And as an aside, you don't have to be gay to enjoy the movie (and I've heard it hasn't turned anyone gay . . . yet). So, if you're skipping out on this movie 'cause you've got an uncomfortable streak w/ the story, I suggest you get over it and check your homophobia at the ticket window; otherwise, you're gonna miss out on a captivating movie. Concerning the slo pace, I think BM is character-driven, so the movie follows the aching, dubious, incredulous and often contemplative mood of it's main protagonist: Ennis Del Mar. Gay Western my balls!! This movie is a lot about subtext. ANYONE can relate to: 1) Commiting or suffering iInfidelities 2) wealth differences in a relationship 3) mad, obsessive search for the impossible 4) dealing with the authority when you have everything to lose (remember Jack's father in law) 5) the slow descent into lowdown when your object of passion can't give you what you want 6) consequences of not being able to say what you feel (regret) 7) fear of the payback 8) fear of everything else and last, and more imposrtantly, OPPORTUNITIES LOST (regret again). Can you relate to some of this? BM hast it's little flaws (yes, it's a bit too long) and it's memorable, magical moments (when Ennis whispers n impossibly tender lullaby in Jack's ears your heart just breaks out of nowhere) This is a movie you just need to watch leaving all of your prejudices, labels and high expectations in the box office. All the people here with the 10s have such a reverence for the movie that it's almost like a religious eperience we've all shared. That would make the bigot and the homophobes that hate everybody and everything the anti-christ. Which reminds me of a letter somebody wrote to the editor not long ago saying that when all those things were written in the bible that everybody believed the world was flat.

Brokeback Mountain is very artistic, both in its technicalities (acting, writing, direction, cinematography, score) and in its heavy use of symbolism. Yes, it is deserving of all the accolades it has received. But the excessive awards attention for Brokeback Mountain is also a double-edged sword for the film. There's so much hype built around it that some first-time viewers will be searching for a different movie than what is actually shown. Brokeback Mountain is no gay Titanic or Gone With The Wind. It doesn't pack an emotional punch or manipulate you in ways most mainstream romances do. Brokeback Mountain is a quiet, subtle love story about two men trying to cope with this "thing" that they share. It's impact is more of a haunting experience - the movie really works it's magic AFTER it is over. (I'm also happy to say that Brokeback Mountain is one of few films that actually gets BETTER upon each viewing.) And it's more than just a love story... Brokeback illustrates the pains of loneliness and regret as we watch these characters make choices that slowly tear their lives apart. The haunting questions of "what if?" and "all that could have been?" That is something everyone can relate to - straight or gay. Sometimes we make choices because they seem the most logical. But in the long run, are those choices really worth the suffering and regret? Great, great movie. (By the way, anyone who sees Brokeback Mountain as contrived propaganda or something with an agenda is CLEARLY missing the point of this film.) Expand
