First, let me say that I really hate it when the hero gets killed by a deus ex machina.
In many ways like Million Dollar Baby, another Hollywood tear-jerker where way too attractive actors & actresses pose as real people in a naturalistic world full of artifice. I did feel a smidge sad when Heath found his shirt (though I saw it coming when the shirt went missing in reel 2), but mostly I felt that these two dudes were too mopey and existential to be real gay cowboys. I mean, unless I missed something, they're not supposed to be French, are they? They behaved like starry-eyed teenagers past the point (and age) of believability; as much as I could buy the first half hour of meet-cute and the last five minutes of human loss, the big fat middle was a dull TV message-movie. Did Matthew Shepherd really die for this? And brand me a stereo-typer, but (in my limited experience) of most of the gay couples I've met, at least one of the partners displays way more of a fey affect then either of these two stoic shepherds ever showed.

The only thing worthwhile about this film is the theme, and that is never enough to create a good story. For my part, I live in the desert, and am no stranger to its seduction. When I wake up in the morning, I see scenery just as beautiful if not more so than in the film, and this landscape is populated by plenty of people whose lives will never be celebrated in particular or archetype. The form of the story is excellent, but the story itself is painfully old fashioned and the obsessive focus on the lovers was truly tiring. Why was further attention not paid to the wives? The children? The community? The supposed murderers? Surely their characters are just as interesting as the two dimensional (though beautiful) Ennis and Jack. Just because it's about gay cowboys doesn't make it worth the filmstock it was printed on. It may have been remarkable, but it is not truly great. Expand

The mountain scenes are spectacularly beautiful, and the movie flawless. The story haunts you, for days after. I saw the movie on the day after Christmas, and I thought of the angels appearing to shepherds tending their flocks... how the seemingly least among us can receive a heavenly gift in the most wondrous way. And, at the end, I couldn't help but think of the crucifixion of Matthew Shepard on a cold Wyoming night. I have read some of the christian right wing blather about the two young guys being unfaithful to their wives. I guess we did not see the same film - because at the end of their first summer together they were both single , but ledger's character Ennis was so conflicted he could not allow his real feelings to surface the way Gyllenhaall's character Jack was able to - that is why Ennis walked into in the alley way and crumbled / collapsed in a fit of rage and denial . All that pain and missed oportunity began there - that was the chance for the future wives to never have been brought into the picture and all thier pains and anguishes. Missed opportunity because of what a hateful society and hateful parents wrought on thier offspring they profess to love. With all the beauty and pain this film evokes, we will now take a gaint leap forward as a culture of people able to love more and tolerate hating less. Expand

Not much So this laconic movie ends, not quite meeting the hype of the critics, the media, outraged conservatives, or gays starving for realistic representation in well told story... and you think... jeez that was sad, but it's over. Not much action, but the acting was great. And then you wake up the next morning with the guitar of the soundtrack in your head as you shake off a night's sleep. And a pervasive sense of desolation pervades your day. And you keep seeing this shirt. And maybe, if it's been a rough day, you'll have a few moments where you need some alone time. This is a movie that burrows into the places where you keep your regrets, missed opportunities, losses... your woulda-coulda-shouldas and quietly expands the space to bursting. It stays with you and flavors your week. It breaks your heart. Ledger gives a performance I've rarely seen and didn't expect. The direction and cinematography are stunning. And the story, spare and minimalist, overwhelms, almost as much by what is left unsaid. Perfect movie? Nah. Iconic gay movie? Actually - not really - it's a western about bad choices, missed opportunities, heartache, mutually inflicted damage when no other course seems possible. But best of the year? Given the tripe coming out of Hollywood lately, I'd say it's the best of the last several. Expand

I can't remember the last time a movie haunted me for days after viewing. Highly recommended to all those seeking a transcendental cinematic experience. (when's the last time those words were uttered about a Hollywood movie?)

I have to say this is one of the most emotional, devastating films i have ever seen. Visually stunning and brilliantly acted by all, "Brokeback Mountain" will stay with your forever. As I sit here typing this, my eyes are welling up with tears.

Deep view into human being at its best and worst. Lack of decision leads to tragic end, love however is the only thing that remains and prevails.

What a beautiful and profound vision of the complexities of the human heart from Ang Lee. It is a trancendent love story in the tradition of "Gone With The Wind," Wuthering Heights," and "Doctor Zhivago." I believe that like Scarlett and Rhett, Heathcliff and Cathy, and Yuri and Lara, that Ennis and Jack will join the pantheon of these literary and cinematic immortal lovers. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal give career-defining performances that make the heart flutter and bleed. I predict an Oscar Sweep for this film: Picture, Director, Best Actor (Ledger), Best Supporting Actress (Williams/Hathaway), Best Supporting Actor (Gyllenhaal), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and maybe Best Score, Best Song, Best Editing, and Best Costume Design as well. Run, don't walk, and go see this movie with a loved oned! Expand

It was subtle in places where it could have made a play for our emotions. It didn't dwell on the sex - in fact it would have been just fine without it - just focusing on the intense feelings that these two men develop for each other. Only in the movies does EVERYBODY have immediate sex, followed by a relationship. What it made me realize is that by the 60's we'd lost the capacity for intimate friendships (probably a couple hundred years ago). Would that the agendas could be forgotten, and this movie appreciated for the excellent story that it tells. Expand
