For a characterI have to agree with the critics - Black Panther is definitely the best MCU movie so far. Truly well written characters, great camaraderie between them, and very heavy underlying themes, unlike your typical comic book movie. For a character that I was never familiar with via comics, Black Panther is an instant fan favourite, and that's not an easy task. It's so much easier to make Spider-Man or the Hulk or Wolverine likeable. To an extent, Iron Man had a similar task on it's hand as he wasn't really an A lister for casual, non comic fans and RDJ just blew our minds. Chadwick Boseman has that same effect minus the eccentricity. He's more Captain America than Iron Man clearly, principles, valor and all that. As a movie, I've never seen anything like it in the MCU, if not for the introduction of Black Panther in the hero heavy Civil War, it might be a rather difficult task reaching casual audiences - that was a masterstroke marketing wise. The connection to MCU (as well as being a run up to Infinity War) is a big advantage and will bring in the green, but not to take away from the fact that it's just a very good standalone movie and an excellent origin story. I wish the villain had more screen time but Michael B Jordan does well with the little time he has and isn't a typical one dimensional villain. I just wish that conflict between them was fleshed out more. Is this my #1 Marvel movie? That title still belongs to Iron Man, but while Iron Man was fun, Black Panther is just stellar. Since it's comic book movies you can see why my # 1 doesn't have to be the best one. Bottom line is, I can't wait to see Black Panther in Infinity War strutting it out with the rest of the Avengers. Well here goes nothing, Black Panther is another chapter in the MCU and it is a great addition. This movie has great story telling, there is a lot of origin story that is easy for comic and non-comic fans to follow. All in all the movie was great, sometimes in these films they rely on comedy relief to save the film but this one perfectly blends serious moments with some comedy. The 3D version is not very exciting I would definitely recommend standard definition but if your adventurous by all means see it in 3D. Good Luck and Have fun on your adventure in Wakanda! Expand

Marvel president Kevin Feige announced late last year that there will be a noticeable difference between Marvel Films Pre-Infinity War and Post-Infinity War, and the latest release from the studio quite clearly proves this point.

Black Panther, mistakenly labeled as the first African-American superhero in cinema: Blade, Storm, War Machine, even Frozone from the Incredibles, has turned into the banner for diversity in the Marvel universe.

Yes, the culture and political standpoints that the film tackles are very relevant and downright powerful at times, yet the mass media seems to want to pigeonhole the film to serve its own political agenda.

The fact of the matter is, Black Panther is a great film because it is a well-executed, well-acted, heartfelt genuine film – that’s all.

The film follows T’Challa who returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to become king, but when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk.

One of the first elements that draw attention is the film’s beautiful color palette which is chock full of vibrant African colors, patterns and ultimately captures the African tradition and weaves it throughout the film’s visual landscape and narrative.

Veteran costume designer Ruth Carter’s designs are immersed in the African custom while reflecting the fantastical elements inherent to the mysterious country and culture.

On a visual level, the film is the epitome of an epic, transcending every Marvel film that has come before: from landscapes to costumes, colors, and cinematography.

Ryan Coogler ensures that his paw-prints are all over the film with many of his now established cinematic language clear in Black Panther, which is another first in the MCU.

Utilizing his signature long takes, and a hand-held camera, Coogler enhances the Marvel experience by truly placing the audience in the middle of the action taking place.

However, some of the CGI work in some of the fight sequences, and the warrior rhinos was noticeable and felt a bit like watching a computer animation film – this may have been an effect of budgetary purposes due to the film’s high production value.

The second most powerful element in the film was its narrative.

Taking on narrative beats that are more akin to Greek Mythology and Joseph Campbell’s The Hero’s Journey than typical superhero tale, Black Panther again breaks out of the formula that its predecessors had established.

It trades in two-dimensional heroes and villains, global threats, and rushed weighty moments, with complex characters, focused inner threats, and earns every beat it delivers whether it be a laugh, a tear, or a whoop of excitement.

Yet some of the ideologies within the film to cater to the globalist, let’s all join hands and sing Kumbaya mentality, which is fine in a feature film, but much more complicated in real life.

The dialogue smooth and fun also uses African dialects to enrich and ground the film in the world of Wakanda, though two or three lines did refer to real world YouTube jokes (the “what are those” moment) and political situations (refugees and barriers) which in a way is a bit jarring.

Xhosa, one of the official languages of South Africa, was the language of the fictional Wakanda and subsequently, the Xhosa culture lent itself as a touchstone to the Wakandan citizenry.

The decision behind the language choice was made during the filming of Captain America: Civil War, when celebrated South African actor John Kani, who portrayed King T’Chaka, used his native accent and Chadwick Boseman who plays T’Challa, in turn, picked it up.

Building off of that, the film’s cast is then given enough material to truly dig deep into their performances.

This leads to the third powerful element: Black Panther has one of the best performances from an all-star cast ensemble in a Marvel film.

Both Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan carry the film as protagonist and antagonist, respectively, and give it their all – Boseman as the tortured new ruler of Wakanda, and Jordan as the revolutionary violence prone forgotten son of Wakanda.

The score, a team effort from Kendrick Lamar and Ludwig Goransson, is a vivid audible masterpiece due to its fusion of African culture and instruments.

Overall, the film is a much more than a super-hero film. It is a film about family, duty, and country. Black Panther is a most-welcomed new direction for the MCU and does bring a new level of excitement for the new entries to come.

The CGI was awful in some parts, the last battle scene was boring, and some scenes that even though this is a PG-13, I feel some scenes NEEDED blood. It feels weird when battles go on and there's no blood on sight. The thing that makes this movie great it's the story, it came in a great time and the moment it had to. When you leave the theaters you feel for Killmonger, you get him the most, and other political messages hidden here and there between the dialogue are great too. Humor was very minimal, but it was great. Overall, it's the 1st Marvel Studios film to care about the whole cast and that's a step in the right direction. Expand

Black Panther is set a few months after Civil War, which is what I understood from the movies marketing. The movie follows T'Challa and his friends and family. T'Challa is a young prince tasked with becoming King of Wakanda after his father's recent death. This gives T'Challa a very deep moral conflict between being a good king like his father once was and making smart decisions in the ever-expanding world. The character development in this film is shaky, but I got a basic idea of the roles of each character. The CIA outsider character was extremely underdeveloped, however, with his role just being to be the guy who has no idea what is going on, but doing a few heroic acts along the way. The villain is one of the best parts of this film, with his character being developed beyond just "evil black panther". This film touches on some very real issues, such as poverty, neglect, and racism, with some subjects blown up a little more than I would've liked. The character development could've used some work, but you don't just go see a Marvel Movie just for the characters. You go to see them for the action, and oh boy is there a lot of that. The action sequences were phenomenal well executed, and the talented cast along real martial arts moves and fighting help bring these to scenes to life. I never felt disoriented, wondering who was fighting who or who was winning, which is an astounding accomplishment many movies strive for. The Marvel movie formula demands that there is a lot of crunching stabbing, and of course table-smashing. Along with the action sequences was the comedy, which was a little underwhelming, but enjoyable none the less. As far as the movie goes, it was very predictable and there was no genuine surprise in what happened next. The movie has by the numbers progression wise, with a seasoned Marvel fan being able to tell what the next step the movie will take. Overall, the movie was a rather enjoyable experience, even if it is dubbed down with a predictable plot and some shaky character development, I would still say it is worth a watch just for the excellent action scenes and wonderful art style and costume design, as well as a gripping emotional journey through the hidden land of Wakanda. I don't understand at all the metascore because I just went to see it and this is not the above 80 points movie. Chadwick Boseman (who was just fantastic when he played James Brown) is blunt, so is Michael B Jordan, Angela Basset and Forrest Whitaker are just useless. Only the lead female characters had some life ! The story is slow paced and full of clichés. The Execs at Disney need to bring back guys like Sam Raimi and Jon Favreau to blow some freshness in these movies like the first Iron Man. And those who compared it to James Bond (because of the car chase.... but in J.B. it's done by real stuntmen not CGI) or the Dark Night is high on drugs ! Is it because it's the first superhero movie with a black character that no one wants to give it a real critic ? It's like when you're kid sings in front of you and you're like "you're so great" but deep inside you're like "My god it was awful" ... it's your child so you're not going to criticize !! Expand

A movie that isn't one-dimensional, you can understand and maybe agree with attitudes from the villains or maybe don't agree with the hero, that's rare in super heroes movies. We have a bunch of tribes, with a development in some of them, they are well introduced and explained, with many different costumes, costumes that are simply great and beautiful. The soundtrack is awesome, with some hard beat that literally puts you on the edge of your seat pumping you up in some moments, in others making you feel the atmosphere of the place better. Visually it's really impressive, in some moments you can see Lion King surroundings and combining with the song it's just phenomenal. The bigger problem here is the CGI in some moments, mostly at the action scenes, you can see 2 digital beans fighting or animals that is easily noticeable fake, and it's ugly. About the actors and actresses, they are all formidable, the job that they did is memorable, they nailed. Every character has a purpose and the story flows, no unnecessary scenes on it. Expand

It was a decent movie. I liked it, but the messaging was annoying.

T'Challa and pretty much all of the Wakandan's were great.

Loved the music, loved the costuming, loved the African lore, art direction, fight choreography, CGI, and most of the acting.

The story was ok, but I didn't like the tie-ins to America. They should have kept it local, in the surrounding countries, where there's real tyranny that needs addressing, even now.

Klaue was a pretty cool antagonist. His character received much more development than the main antagonist, Killmonger... which makes little sense.

Jordan did a fine job, playing the role he was dealt, but I couldn't stand the self-entitled ****

I did appreciate that they kept it more serious in tone. Hate forced humor.

But what was mostSure, the highly-publicized aspects of this film are innovative: an almost all-black cast from a rich, technologically advanced African country, the fierce female warriors and the villain who has close ties to the good guys. But what was most impressive cinematically was the magnificent art direction: the imaginary locations are spectacular, the sci fi elements are cool and the costumes are fantastic. The surprise was how much drama is involved. Sure, there are the requisite action scenes, but there's a lot of talk about pride, moral responsibility and other lofty subjects. The cast is loaded with top notch actors, who turn in serious, dedicated performances. Ryan Coogler is one of the most promising directors today and he's brought his socially conscious vision to bear, while still managing to entertain. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The film is very weak in many areas namely acting, editing, music and story. There is much to comment on, but the exaggerated portrayal (over acting) by the sister of Black Panther is perhaps the most noticeable. They accents grate, the line delivery and often dialogue is spongy and shallow. The sound design and music may well have been fantastic but it was buried in the centre of the screen, mixed low and non impactful. The scene where the Black Panther “arises” after being thrown to his death is built up then ends abruptly like it never happened. The fight scenes are cut in such a way they don’t often make sense. The city is confused... why with all the tech do they still have spears? Why is there a portal as African life being so tribal and simple? It was also noted that Wakanda is a walled city with a big wall and that no immigrants are permitted. This was all an opportunity to be open and present a world that is better than our own. And it just fails. The world is small and bigotted. The central plot has our hero come back from certain death claiming he is the rightful king. However he lost a fight and the rightful king went to someone else. His claim that “I did not submit” is not strong enough because he was thrown over a waterfall and stopped fighting. So his claim is false. A key point of the film seems to be that The Black Panther rejects the ceremonial traditions of Wakanda in favour of a coup. He is not the rightful king and we are expected to agree that he is, just because he’s a nicer guy. It’s such a gaping script/plot hole. Unforgivable in a film with this support. I’m baffled why so many are saying the film is good. It’s truly terrible. Expand

The Marvel Cinematic Universe, at this point, has been receiving great movies to watch throughout the past decade (that means Black Panther too) and it would be much of a shame if that streak ended at any time. I sure wish they don't ruin this streak though since the Marvel Cinematic Universe holds many surprises that many people would not expect to see for a film that features the Marvel characters they know and love. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Movie is solid - definitely in the better half of the MCU. My biggest disappointment was how they portrayed Black Panther. In the comics, he's god tier strategist. Has contingencies for everything and while they made brief mention to Killmonger's brilliance as a special ops solider, we don't see it as much, particularly since he seems to struggle with the Wakandan guards. I'm just hoping they power him up in the future because he doesn't seem very capable without the help of his fellow Wakandans and that doesn't seem like the Black Panther I remember from the source material. First, the bad news
After watching this movie twice one thing is really bugging me, the fight scenes. What a missed opportunity. Civil war set BP up as a martial arts bad ass with a fighting presence similar to Bruce Lee. The BP movie kinda strips that cool factor away with poorly shot fight scenes. In a way, it's like TDK cus the fight scenes were **** in that but the story was superb.

Now for the good news
Killmonger, killmonger, **** Loved Killmonger! Not only was he sympathetic, he was right about EVERYTHING. If BP and Kilmonger could work together somehow it would have been beautiful. 2 panthers! 1 like MLK and the other like Huey P Newton both complimenting and balancing each other. I liked all the characters and personalities in this film. I liked the different tribes and their colors and outfit. The art direction and costume designs were off the **** CHAIN! if they don't win an Oscar for that it will be a blatant snub. The Dora Milaje were amazing and hot and I never thought Michone from walking dead was hot, but "damn." Umbaku was fun and I liked his sense of honor. Everyone did a great job even Martin Freeman even tho he didn't really need to be there. Back to Killmonger. He delivers a line in this movie that made me tear up cus it was true and it was tragic and that's his whole character. I just can't say enuff good things about Micheal B Jordan in this movie. I loved the relationships between the characters they all felt real especially between BP and his sister Shuri. I'll be re-watching this film for the rest of my life.

...and now for the ugly news
Too much CG. Practical effects should have been utilized more and the cam shakes too much.

...and the weird
I got thru a review without spoiling anything :) also the stingers were not good or interesting

If you haven't already, go see this. If you've seen it already, go see it again. Marvel never lets me down and continues to surprise me.

...one more thing, "Killmonger" that is all.

The action and effects are mostly effective. The world and tech are undeniably cool. The protagonist and antagonist are both supremely well-developed. But where a lot of the other recent Marvel solo outings fell short, this one does as well. The plot is at times questionably paced and not entirely well-thought-out. Some stylistic choices here and there either sucked me out of the experience or rubbed me the wrong way. And the humor, while definitely more toned down in this than in other recent solo flicks, also became grating over time. Still, "Black Panther" is not a bad film. Maybe close to great, even. But it's also yet another solo Marvel film that's left me with the same conclusion - the team-up's are still the most to me entertaining as of late. Expand

Black Panther is strongest when it just puts two characters on screen and puts a conflict between them: whether that's Killmonger disagreeing about the origin of an artifact or T'Challa disagreeing about his nation's role in the world. There are a lot of great scenes and amazing style in this film. However, they should fire the editor. The editing is bland, choppy, and distracting. The editor left no space for scenes to breathe and many sequences feel rushed. In sum, Michael B Jordan puts this movie on his back and carries it through to the end; his raw emotion contrasts wonderfully with Chadwick Boseman's stoic Black Panther and the supporting cast is excellent. I would put this on par with Iron Man. Expand

Jordan) who he will come up against as the movie progresses.Noteworthy are Production Designer Hannah Beachler’s lavish Wakanda set and Rachel Morrison’s sweeping cinematography of the fictional country’s landscape.Moreso Ruth E. Carter’s richly colourful costume design for the movie’s characters including T’Challa’s nicely embroidered Kaftan from northern Nigeria with cuffs made from Ghana’s Kente cloth and Ramonda (Angela Bassett), T’Challa’s Mother’s South African-themed outfits. The coronation ceremonies were unnecessary and off-putting.The African accents used in the movie are of two types; the very poor, used by Boseman, in portraying T’Challa, and Forest Whittaker, Sterling K. Brown and Daniel Kaluuya in their respective portrayals of the characters Zuri, N’Jobu and W’Kabi. Then there are the better sounding and convincing accents of Letitia Wright as Shuri, T’Challa’s tech geek sister, Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Winston Duke as M’Baku, as well as John Kani and his son, Atandwa who play the older and younger T’Chaka, respectively. The standout performances are from Wright in her role as the excellent comedic foil to T’Challa and Gurira’s portrayal of the steely tough Okoye who commands the Palace Guard. All said, Black Panther is a job well done by Director Ryan Coogler, and a bold statement on black identity, history and ingenuity for which Marvel must be commended. Expand

I can't identify with the characters on the screen because they're black, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the movie. It's a visual feast and the villain is portrayed greatly, whose motives and actions are actually somewhat believable and to a degree justified. I'm assuming a lot of the negative reviews are because the cast is 95% black.... I mean really? WHy wouldn't it be? These are the kinds of things in this day and age people bring up and get all offended about. The story takes place in Africa, and it's main hero is black, what would you expect? I loved the movie, it was entertaining, the villain was done well, and the underlying political message wasn't shoved down our throats, it wasn't screaming for attention but it wasn't going unnoticed. Considering that racism is still rampant in our society I feel as though this movie was needed. The director did a fine job with balancing the two. Expand

It was still a good film, but far from being the best. It seemed to be dry in comparison of other comic films such as Wonder Woman and Thor. It had an apparent political message that may have worked but still I prefer action over politics in my comic book based movies. The acting was great. The story was good. The cinematography was excellent, but it just seemed to lack something to make it click. The plot line was also predictable. Not my favorite comic book movie, but it was still worth watching. Expand

The themes and culture represented is what makes the movie interesting and gripping. Michael b Jordon's Kill monger as a anti-hero steals the show with his motives being very clear which adds layers to the story. The movie as a whole is grounded to reality despite having futuristic tech. The only Minor issue is the CGI is noticeable in towards the 3rd act.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rather bad, over hyped.
I was putting a lot of hope in that movie, and I guess as a lot of people I was really hyped about it. But in the end, the movie was too long, boring, and with a poor scenario. Luckily the special effects and dresses were good, but overall acting was really bad...

About acting : M.B.Jordan and D.Gurira acting were good, C.Boseman was ok. While W.Duke and L.Wright were quite bad. The other were just... transparent. But I think this come more from the directing than the actors themselves. I think Ryan Coogler as a big part in this overall poor acting, the actors were probably not "push" and just easy with their acting..

About dressing : This is the best part of the movie, lot of nice dresses, colorfoul, designed, mixed, interesting.

Visual effects : Between good and bad.. The actions were too fast and even blur on screen for the panther, and CGI was crap, really amateur. But big group action in daylight were better and pleasant to watch, even though not extraordinary.

Music : I guess it is a matter of taste, I enjoyed it but.. it was a bit too much sometime and always the same, which in the end was almost getting annoying.

Scenario : BAD. I think scenario and poor acting just ruined the movie (with directing). The movie was too long, while you can resume it in 10s. It was the typical bad people steal good people, then a bad guy try to conquest a good guy throne, then in the end the good guy win. There was a bit of political, mixing poor punchline "your ancestor stole mine", "bring in another little white guy"(I am translating from french), "I would rather die like my ancestor", so not developped at all and really cheesy. The characters were also not developed at all, except maybe Killmonger, what a waste.
And what about the joke ?? I didn't even smiled, it was just BAD. Like this one "I will eat you blabla... kidding we are vegan" like seriously ?? Was it written by a 7 yo kid ??

Conclusion : Good special effects, good dresses, bad acting, bad scenario, bad jokes and punchline, and I guess very bad directing. Resulting in one of the worst Marvel, at the same level of transformers or last iron-man. Disapointing and over-hyped.

It was an amazing feeling to look at a movie screen and see a superhero who looked like me. To see diverse characters who were more than a stereotype. To see people in advancing technologically and still keep in touch with their culture. To see so many real and distinct African cultures be represented in such a positive light. It's not about Black supremacy, which does not exist, it's about positivity and representation. Black Panther was all of these and I'm very proud to have people like me in roles like this. T'Challa is the hero I've been hoping to see for a long time in these movies. He's strong, brave, complex without being dark or a jerk. The supporting cast is awesome, with his sister Shuri (who almost steals the show), his ex Nakia, CIA agent Everett K. Ross, and guard Okoye make up an awesome team. They are fun to watch and each gets real stand out moments. Okoye getting my personal favorite action moment of the whole movie. The action feels fresh and exciting. Focusing on smaller fights over grand confusing CGI spectacles. It all looks very cool. There's a car chase midway through the movie with Claw that is particularly awesome. The story feels much more adult than most superhero movies. Dealing with the complexities of how to be part of a world that may not like you but you have to do your best to make better anyway. The corruption of power and how the powerful manipulate the fears of others to gain more power. It also stands alone. You will not need to see the past 10 years worth of Marvel movies to understand anything (aside from one post credit thing). Okay, let's address it. There is a lot of alt-right hate out there against this movie. It's a movie about black people who are strong and independent. It shines a light on the damage caused by white colonialism. So, of course, they will hate it, say insane untrue things to try and stop people from liking it. And this is how they will be as long as they get their marching orders from Infowars, fox news, and Trump. Ignore them, decide for yourself. Remeber it's only a movie, so breathe and calm down. If superhero movies aren't your thing, this might not change your mind but if you've liked them but wanted something more mature then this is it! Expand

Ultimately, I felt Black Panther was just okay. It would be reviewed much higher, except it did much the same as any other superhero movie. Let's break it up into the good and the bad:

The Good:

Visuals and art direction were amazing. 10/10.

Acting was excellent. 9/10.

Homage to comics.

The Bad:

Plot was bland. It did nothing that hasn't been seen before. On top of that, some threads went nowhere, others could have been resolved by better communication (which is a lazy tactic used far too often in a lot of films). When things were introduced, you could immediately predict when and how they would come back later in the movie as a plot point or setpiece every time. I did appreciate the more serious tone. 4/10.

Overall, I wished I was watching the characters in any other movie. The done before plot dragged the entire movie down. It's hard for a movie with great acting, likeable and diverse characters, and great visuals to feel boring, but Black Panther did. It showed enough promise to earn a sequel, and I hope it will build on the successes of this movie with a more interesting story.

As good points: The comedy is present in the film, but it's not the principal aspect like it was in Thor: Ragnarok. Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), the villain has a lot of presence and his motivations are very realistic. Also, Ulisses Klaw (Andy Serkis), Shuri (Letitia Wright) the Agent Ross (Martin Freeman) and General Okoye (Danai Gurira) have their own special moments. Despite some CGI issues that I saw, the special effects for Wakanda or the Shuri's toys are really immersive and enjoyable. The best point of the film, as a lover of Hans Zimmer, Howard Shore...is the soundtrak which sounded really good.
Negative points: Well, I'll start with T'chala (Chadwick Boseman). He was great as Black Panther, but sometimes I had the sensation that he was overacting.
Aswell, as I said before, some CGI moments were to low for what we are used to in the MCU. And for the last, sometimes the rythm of the film is a bit slow, not enought to get bored, but enought to realize it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The same film heralded, largely rightfully, as a triumph in social justice and racial equality is also tragically-written. Ironically, the villains are killed or silenced alongside the theme of black liberation, an outcome demonized enough for the most advanced black cultures in the world to slaughter one another over their weapons being used to crush the oppression that economically, socially, technologically and geographically strangles the rest of the world's black cultures, even avoiding saving the world and instead entrusting this task to a white guy inexperienced with their technology.

Disney's opportunistic marketing would seem to be largely responsible for its box office success, alongside public discontent being easily pacified with commercial purchases. This seems more plausible than an indication of Hollywood becoming accessible to minorities or less racist.

It was another dumb comic book movie and maybe not a great choice as a cultural icon of our time, though the obvious qualities of its largely-black cast and the achievement of Hollywood blockbuster diversity are intact. This was a rather average couple hours of cultural appropriation as I was told what to care about, even when the rather poorly-written-and-oft-acted alleged supervillain wasn't talking smack like someone who enjoys cold, plain oatmeal. I find it appalling that critics are heaping praise upon that performance. The female characters, and even title character, I have few complaints about, if any, as they exist in the confines of this story. They are well-acted and largely well-written.

Observe, however, as they butcher both the sequence of major plot points and the villain's otherwise understandable motivations (black freedom and vengeance), often with the cheap, lazy, typical Hollywood blockbuster writing and acting of 90% of his lines and character development. This was a below-average Marvel flick from our friends at Disney.

This movie is monumental for a couple reasons, the irony of this being commodified cultural appropriation aside. The inarguably necessary potential advancements for representation in major media a la Obama in politics (we have been simultaneously bombing these seven countries and leading all five of these wars since well before he left office) and the blatant blaxploitation.

You can't just throw Huey P. on a wall in Oakland projects, give the character gold fronts and a dead father, speak in slang, have him kill and assault a few women, not to mention hundreds of others, blacks among them by his own admission, before demonstrating his combat prowess in ritual ceremony and expect absolution, nor for the mood to be empathetic and redemptive, some much-needed homecoming nor reunion. It was a bit telling how at the climax, all the black characters are fighting each other, instead of the oppression they speak of throughout the movie. Black liberation dies with the villains. Further, the son kills his brother-cousin just as his father manslaughtered his uncle and the task of directly stopping the escape and imminent activation of Wakanda's collective ultra-advanced weaponry with a futuristic Augmented Virtual Reality Remote piloting system is given to a white guy, allowing him to operate a spaceship he has never flown in because he used to be a pilot, who then completes the task without further sacrifice beyond his previous bullet to the spine to save the Panther's sister. It felt too reminiscent of African American history, outside of media let alone inside it, to sit well, despite the paternally and historically separated son uniting with brothers and sisters in his ancestral homeland in not-Africa. Because he was an ****

Other notes: I dug all the dream sequences during the ceremonies as well. The costumes were fantastic. The capital city of Wakanda (or was the city itself Wakanda?) did make one wonder what a major city would look like in Africa if it weren't overtaken. The friend I watched it with had no idea that either the General and Rhino Master (no affection shown for each other besides a couple lines throughout, which also completely nullified any drama when he lays down his weapon at her demand without event) were a thing nor that Michael 'G. Boredom' and his supposed Bonnie were a thing. Her getting merc'd didn't have enough setup to work emotionally - just more wanton misogynistic violence. Choosing the REAL villain twist probably required more effort being put into Killmonger, as I thought Claue was well-setup by that time in a great a performance by Andy Serkis, as himself.

While the MCU genre has become stale of late, Black Panther does provide a breath of fresh air in a tired genre and I probably would rate it higher just for that factor if Thor: Ragnarok didn't exist.

On its own merits Black Panther is an entertaining movie. It has a nice balance of action, some great performances, and some of the most amazing landscapes you will see in a movie. Unfortunately the movie is let down by a bland, formulaic story line and shaky camera action sequences that make it near impossible to tell what is going on and even harder to avoid full motion sickness.

Still a great movie and well worth seeing.

Overall it felt like more of a propaganda film than an action movie, and was sorely lacking in the broad racial diversity that usually makes Disney movies such a joy. Expand

Did anyone else get lion king flash backs when they go into the spirit world? Just me?

In all seriousness though this is a win for proving that minority casts with strong female leads can still make money and good films. Can we give Danai, Lupita and Letitia a spin off? Worst thing about the film, CG is a little off at times, not terrible but takes you out of the action at times.

I typically get all fanboy over any/all Marvel films. And this one, based on the character, the dynamics socially and MCU related, the trailer and the early buzz, I went into this with too much expectation. If Black panther came in under the radar, maybe it gets bumped to a 7. But the landscape has been set before this and it should have known better!

Boring film overall. Lazy script. Too long a run time. Below par CGI. Uneventful fight scenes. It's not the worst Marvel MCU film to date, but it's down in the bottom 5 for me. I compare what we should have gotten out of this movie to what Dr Strange brought to the MCU. -Introduce a secondary character (to the public not Marvel fans). -Introduce a gift to the MCU that hasn't been explained in prior films (Mystic arts / Vibranium technology). -Give us a villain with a twisted perspective on the respective gift (using mystic arts for immortality/vibranium tech to lift up a culture from oppression). -Build on the MCU to get us excited for what's to come. I left Dr Strange with such joy and thrill from the ride. I left Black Panther bored and thinking, what a waste of 3 hours. I could have gotten to the same place in 1.5 hours and with far less resistance if presented to the audience in a much more fun way.

Shame... Moving on to Infinity War.

The main plot was pretty run of the mill, thought Michael B was definitely an above average Marvel villain. Mostly I really enjoyed the characters and the world-building of the different tribes. Black panther himself wasn't really that interesting of a character, but the supporting cast, especially the sister and general were very well written and acted. Nothing crazily creative or surprising narratively, but what it did, it did well. Expand

I am a true Marvel comics fan and this movie felt very accurate to the character. I also got that very special feeling of being 12 again, which to me is the most cherished part of watching comic book movies - just to be that kid again for a little while and have my imagination stimulated by the fantastic. I can't wait to go back to Wakanda again when Thanos shows up.

A criticism: the climax scene was off for me - I won't spoil it but it was a little bit of a letdown.

I really liked the actress who was basically this films version of James Bond's Q. It has a solid story and tells it well. Better than most Marvel films. Better but not the best. Because when it comes to deeper themes and meaning, there is just something lacking. Something Logan and a few of the Batman movies has managed to deliver. So don't tell me there is no room for that stuff in a comic book film. That stuff makes a great comic book film. Without it, this one is merely pretty good. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Black panther was not a good movie. it was at best a sub par superhero movie. the movie had some quality effects and acting, but that's about it. in terms of writing and story this film fell very short. I would first like to point out the biggest problem I have with this movie, simply from a storytelling perspective. when engaged in ritualistic combat with this movie's primary antagonist the main character loses all his mystic powers to even the playing field. he then loses, badly. now losing to the main villain the first time is a common plot point, but normally the main character loses due to a lack of planning, foul play, or a need to train and gain some new perspective to defeat the antagonist(luke returning to Dagobah, Batman climbing out of the pit bane was born in, etc). here black panther, whose sole merit is his training and good heart, loses. he has lost all my at this point. The only thing i've been told is his strong suit, honorable combat, he has just lost at, but I am somehow supposed to believe he is the one meant to fix everything. Take iron mans suit away, he's still a genius, take caps shield away he's a super soldier with a heart of gold, take black panthers panther powers and pajamas away, and he's apparently worthless. but there is still some chance to redeem himself. he could learn something new despite the fact that he has trained for ritual combat his whole life. maybe it's some emotional revelation. he does gain some tension with his father but even in his visit back to the spirit world he doesn't really confront him, he just mentioned it and says he has unfinished business. this new emotional conflict wasn't present during the original fight with the villain so how its resolution would help him is beyond me. he then wins the last fight for no reason other than it was the end of the movie. he tried using some weird tactic with the train, but if you cut out every scene of them dodging a train the movie would have been exactly the same. on that same topic if you cut out every scene with the man from the CIA the movie would have been the same. this movie is full of filler like this that doesn't really move the plot. the fact that people are praising this movie so much confuses me. it is not new or fresh, it is a heap of rehashed plots, themes, and tropes. To top it off the beginning and end of the movie are exactly the same. What I mean by this is that nothing has changed. If you just show the first couple minutes and the last couple minutes nothing seems to be different. Black panther becomes king and stays king and everything is the same.in almost any good movie something has to be different at the end, the plot had to change something, look at almost any of the most famous classics and the ending has something different, even the big lebowski had change at the end.there is some minor difference at the end, they are trying to do more with the outside world, but this is cut short at the end of the movie so we really don't know where that goes. And the whole theme about helping other countries didn't really have anything to do with the main conflict of birthrights.

I am honestly baffled that this movie has received such shining reviews. It is nothing special. It was no better than any other superhero movie. I'm not saying a superhero movie cannot be amazing. The dark knight was an amazing piece of cinema, but this movie had no substance, nothing new or interesting, no characters that weren't generic (scientist sibling, honorable warrior man, angry young antagonist who was wronged). There are some other specific issues I have with the movie’s plot but I'll leave it at that. This movie was bland, just like the vibranium pajama wearing hero it was made for.

The movie has an AMAZING cast, which they totally send to waste with bad dialogue and quick deaths. It starts in an amazing way, fooling you in believing that you will see a quality movie; but it ends up being a Marvel movie, and one on the low level. It has a weak story and a villain that ends up not living up to the expectations. The actions scenes are okay, but not much; they use too much CGI on the fighting scenes and it leaves you disappointed on the quality of it. I truly and honestly believe that movies with all black cast should not be centered around money, sex, drugs, slavery and gang violence. That was the vibe I was getting in the beginning, however as I sat back and let it all sink in I was astounded at the way we as a black race was portrayed. Just walking in to the AMC theaters in Tallahassee, Florida on fan night, I saw all black who had shopped at black owned stores for their Dashiki's and Ankhs this really put a smile on my face. It opened up so many conversations were movie goers, black movie goers were stating that if they had this much variety in the movies that they wouldn't resort to watching Madea Plays and 12 years a slave or even Snow in the Bluff. I hope the directors and writers are paying attention to their audience. With the movie itself I give it a 10 due to its creativeness of the villain and humor. There wasn't a moment in the film where I wasn't fully invested, my only problem with film is that there weren't that many African Americans from the states with feature roles and spot light.
To conclude, it is a must see for all and an eye opener of how prosperous the black community could be if we all work together. Wakanda Forever!

Black Panther is a good but not great superhero film. Certainly it's not superb, as the SJW critics may have led you to believe.

It's amazing to view the fictional Wakanda country in film, a technologically advanced african state isolated from the outside world and posing as a 3rd world country. Black Panther's tech and gadgets rival those of Iron Man and Batman. And certainly it's refreshing to view elements of african culture.

Unfortunately Black Panther is a film more concerned about not sparking any kind of controversy and appealing to SJWs than telling a captivating story. Marvel movies have usually been average in the storyline department (except for a few great movies like Captain America: The Winter Soldier) but Black Panther suffers in this respect. It's not just the SJW undertone which I dislike. It's a story a bit too similar to Disney's The Lion King, and everything's predictable. The street car chase in South Korea is fantastic but battles are underwhelming, and the final one is a big mess. The Black Panther vs Killmonger fight is really bad. Other than Black Panther's throne there was not really anything bigger at stake, despite the efforts of the writers to add a sense of danger because Wakandan weaponry may spread out of the fictional country's borders.

Also the Black Panther movie is not really connected to the wider MCU, aside from the inclusion of Agent Ross from Civil War and the return of Ulysses Klaw from Avengers: Age of Ultron.

I like Chadwick Boseman posing as Black Panther, but the movie was a slight disappointment for me. I hope his next solo movie will be better. Now he's set to come back in Avengers: Infinity War.

Somehow it's being talked about as 'important', but for all its well-intended and rather limited redress of colonialism, it's really more of the same in another form. For some reason, all the actors are forced to use an exaggerated 'nowhere we know in Africa' accent, that makes it about as progressive as an episode of 'Allo 'Allo. It's a curious Western fantasy of high-technology, magic weapons, and mag-lev trains, but also of people who are ruled just as much by violence, monarchy and tradition (while maintaining an abiding love of ceremony, mask-wearing, totemic animals, dancing, patterned fabrics and riding armour plated Rhinos). Therefore it's assumptions are largely shaped by the very colonialism it apparently sets out to critique. What it probably does reveal is a confusion around attitudes to Africa at the border of US identity politics. The resulting mess is interesting to think about, but as a film is over-long and crawls to a somewhat predictable end. However, by playing the game of positing a mythical technically superior African nation, it both reshapes Africa to be like the West, while revealing that it is the only standard it thinks anything is worth measuring something by. Even the idea of Africa bringing 'aid' to America was wasted in sincerity, rather than rye satire. Again this is because it honours the foreign saviour myth it really should have done a job of demystifying. Expand
