THOR:Ranarok Spiderman:Homecoming FAR, FAR better spectacle and fun than this. So what is it that had made this one of the HIGHEST grossing films of all time. Is it because it has a BLACK man as the focused hero? I feel like this movie is being judged more as a social "marker" rather than pure entertainment. Kinda like if ROOTS was a superhero flick..is that it? I dunno..people white and black alike are acing like this is something they've NEVER seen before. Seriously? it's a MARVEL flick (hey li'l secret here: THEY'RE ALL DAMM GOOD!). IF this is finally the movie that sucks black people in to watching superhero flix (cuz as one black dude told me long along: see black folk don't do scifi or fantasy..we do gangsta..like Scarface and Boys in Hood, etc. Not Jedis & Hobbits!) COOL! and Welcome to the party (you were NEVER "NOT invited")

..just don't tell me THIS movie is BETTER than any other recent Marvel flick..cuz I was expecting something truly original (as I was told by EVERYONE! white/black/critics/fanbois alike) and I got all excited an it was like OK..this was good..it was Marvel..what did you expect? it would suk? BUT it wasn't GROUNDBREAKING

This is most definitely not that movie. There is nothing exceptional about this movie. Dumb, boring, stupid. The same explosions, special effects, conceits as all of the other Marvel superhero type films. The mumbo jumbo about saving the world was truly terrible. Planet of the Apes, without the possibly redeeming kitsch factor, mixed with Lion King. Racist and clueless without being aware of it. Expand

I might have been influenced by the bunch of black girls, that were sitting a few seats away, and apparently found every joke so incredibly funny that I just couldn't help but laugh along. This is the best Marvel movie in years, maybe Infinity War will do better, we'll see. For now Black Panther is the Marvel movie you want to see this year. Many users, or at least accounts, seem to give this movie preposterously low ratings for mostly ideological reasons. I think Black Panther doesn't deserve that. Giving it a 9, even if it's really a very solid 8. I just left the theater feeling like it was money well spent and it's been a while since that happened. Expand

"Did he freeze?"

So this is kinda late since the hype for Marvel's latest entry is slowly dying down, until 'Infinity War' hits and everything else will be history. Black Panther is a good movie, but sadly not a great one. There's a lot of great things about it and boy was it a joy to watch. The problems on the other hand aren't something to overlook.

Ryan Coogler is an excellent director with his previous work on 'Fruitvale Station' and Creed''. While I think he stumbled a bit with this movie since it's a much bigger movie and the studios breathing down his neck, but at least he brought a brand new superhero in style.

Chadwick Boseman is a great actor and the portrayal of T’Challa/Black Panther was pretty good. I do think he got overshadowed by everyone else, mostly from the supporting actors. After the death of his father, T’Challa goes through a dilemma when being face with taking over the throne and rule his land. However, not once do you feel his struggle and wasn't presented as a challenge. If I have to be honest, he was more interesting in 'Civil War'. Still this is just the beginning for him. Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, and Letitia Wright all three serve as supporting characters, but in reality are what glues the movie together and really hold their own in this big budget movie. Even Andy Serkis and Martin Freeman hold their own as well.

Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger is the best villain in the MCU so far. What makes him so compelling to watch isn't because he wants to take over the world or has any magical powers. Just like the Joker, you can't disagree with his arguments of honesty and truth, which is best served cold. Not saying Killmonger is up there with the Joker as the best, but pointing out an example of what separates him from bland. I'm glad Marvel is improving.

The villain problem being solved isn't just one thing, but the score as well. Taking influences from Africa cultural for it's score. Having a little touch of 'The Lion King' in the mix. I liked the technological side of Wakanda and how it blends with the costume designs which had a unique presentation. From any other superhero franchises out there, this is the most refreshing in terms of style. I'm starting to see a difference now.

For problems: The fight scenes are either too dark or anything memorable. Maybe both. The visual effects were shockingly bad and looked unfinished. There wasn't a single frame that I would call 'good'. Looking like cut scenes from an old video game. Wakanda itself didn't feel like a real place in this cinematic universe, because I'm just assuming there only used two build sets for the movie (that's not CGI), where you see characters walk around a street on repeat.

There's literally a scene in this movie where a character yells "what are those!" and I almost sunk into my seat from cringe. The plot is predictable, like most Marvel movies. There's a fake out death that last for 10 minutes, acting like they are gone forever. The reason why this doesn't work is not once do you buy into it and since it's a major character who's going to be in 'Avengers Infinity War', if you've seen the trailer.

Overall rating: Just a reminder, I enjoyed the movie a lot and I don't hate it. Heck, just forget what I just said right now. This is just another home run for Marvel and there's nothing stopping them. I mean, it's been 10 years guys, like wow.

Black Panther has become the ultimate blockbuster, almost reaching the Avengers Age of Ultron as the 3rd most successful comic book film of all time. Is it worth the hype? Yes and no. Coogler on one hand created a passionate super hero film with a great perspective on the African continent. On the other hand, it is a 'Marvel film' and its basic plot is derivative of another Marvel flick about 'kingdom and princes'( which title I will not spoil here). Its success rest though on Marvel / Disney's uncanny marketing ability. Who knows that the African American community in the US 'hungers' for a film representative of them and bet a $200 million budget for it? Well Disney did and they got a $1.3 billion plus movie. Their dominance at this point on the cinemagoing experience is so 'severe' that I found that the only 'worthy' tentpole films to watch first day on the cinema are released by them. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a fantastic film, whose acting, music, themes, etc help it rise above the few flaws that could have dragged it towards mediocrity. The father/son dynamics are immensely powerful, and they achieve their emotional weight without an ounce of mawkish **** I could praise almost every frame of this film, and though it does have its share of plot-holes, I've gotten the impression from reading articles about the editing process that most of said plot-holes were caused in the editing process, rather than in the script.

All that said, here are some of the flaws:
The first fight scene is a bit difficult to visually navigate, but this is due to it taking place at night, so it's probable the director wanted it to be slightly disorienting, as any disorientation felt by the viewers could mirror the experience of the mercenaries the Black Panther is fighting.

The use of the rhinos at the end feels forced and disjointed, and also marks the worst visual effects moment in the film- the bodies flung by the charging beasts look like digital rag-dolls. W'Kabi's motivations in following Killmonger, while underpinned by an AMAZING performance by Daniel Kaluuya, are not well enough explained to have me completely accept that he would betray those closest to him. This plot-hole is further made problematic by the fact that T'Challa could have unraveled Killmonger's entire plan by letting it be known that he stopped T'Challa from apprehending Klaue in the first place.

Killmonger's final line of dialogue is incredible, it doesn't seem like T'Challa would idly stand by and let his cousin needlessly kill himself on a day of so much bloodshed. This really comes down to my read of T'Challa as a character, but I did find it distracting that he just stood there while Killmonger pulled the blade out of his chest and died.

Perhaps there are more flaws, but that's all I can think of for the moment.

Anyhow, go see this movie! It's definitely a glittering roller-coaster worth the ride.

That being said, Black Panther is a great movie, with two of the best villains of Marvel so far, a fun and exciting story, and good music and message. Now as a project and event in movie history, there's where Black Panther really shines, because it showcases finally that all that of "I can't say my lead actor is Mohammad so-and-so from such-and-such. Well it is not as bad as Iron Man 2 but it is not close to the best Marvel movies to date, it's pretty sad to see the lack of professionalism from journalist calling this movie the best superhero movie ever made, they are supposed to be neutral, but as in videogame journalism has shown how biased they are, long story short don't believe in their lies, Black Panther is enjoyable and you may like it if you are fan of the character and if you are ready to let pass all the cringe worthy PC/SJW/BLM lines in the movie.

Maybe if ten years from now, I was a child binge watching super-hero films, I might take it at face value. But, as an adult now, I can't let my finances support these political edge movies are requiring I.e. Wonderwoman - Feminist Movement, The Danish Girl - Trans movement.

For the record, I'm cool with women. I'm cool with blacks. I'm cool with trans LGBTQ+++. I just don't want to buy a ticket to prove I'm cool with people. Theses outside associations are super seeding the quality of the film and how we make films. There's something for everybody, I guess. Can't we just make movies without the additional angle?

A nearly all black cast superhero movie to push us yet further down that contentious road to equality. In addition a propensity of female names also headlining the behind the scenes tech credits, and it would appear that many will be signalling their approval and be very happy with the result. Add to this the appropriate accomplishments in Costume Design, Cinematography and (despite the odd wobble) Visual Effects and a positive euphoria must be sweeping all before it. Critically acclaimed, a box office behemoth and already garnering talk as the first superhero movie to be nominated for Best Picture at next year's Oscars. It almost seems too good to be true. Oh, did I not mention the script! How silly of me to omit all that mumbo jumbo of a storyline that seems to have nearly everyone in raptures. Forget 'Ladybird' and 'Call Me By Your Name' this seems to be the appreciated literature of today. Still, on a positive note, equality has most definitely been established as this is as underwhelming and mindless as are the white superhero movies. Bored anyone? ME TOO! Expand

Following Chadwick Boseman’s character T’Challa as he returns from the location of Civil War, we are introduced to the bustling world of Wakanda, which is undoubtably the most colorful place in the entire MCU. The immersion is incredible - a grand introduction via a flyover of the entire city, accompanied by a terrific score from Ludwig Goransson (those drums are amazing). The way Coogler goes about exploring the culture of this world is invigorating, and he devotes the entire first half to this. When it comes to the action, it is largely hit or miss. It is quite noticeable, at specific points, when a character changes from a stuntman to a CGI model, which can get quite distracting. The majority of the fights don’t provide enough of the satisfying elements of other Marvel outings, and, honestly, the direction of the action could be better (Nothing against Coogler). Also, the seemingly poignant messages expressed throughout the film’s runtime sometimes come across as hamfisted, which was kind of a set back. All in all though, Black Panther makes up for its somewhat disappointing action sequences with a charming story, incredible characters, the best Marvel score to date, and terrific performances. And, most importantly, it’s a lot of fun. Expand

This review contains spoilers*********

We are introduced to the technologic and advanced civilization of Wakanda very early on. Then we are introduced to it again when Everet Ross enters Wakanda. Why not start with that instead of doing it twice? Wakanda is the most technologically advanced society of the world and it is wasted when we first experience it. We as the audience should see Wakanda as a outsider like Everet Ross. 99% of the world views Wakanda as a 3rd world country. Why not take advantage of that throughout the first half of the movie? As a alternative to viewing it in Everet Ross's perspective, we could also experience it the same way as Killmonger arrives. Michael B Jordan arrives as Killmonger in Wakanda halfway through the movie thinking that no one will allow him entry unless he's does some grand deed, yet no one seems to know who he is. None of this is relevant. Again, we should experience the wonder of Wakanda through one of two people who have never experienced it.

With that being said, several of the characters stand out. Winston Duke is one of the best characters of Black Panther as well as the MCU. I love him in the beginning, and I love him when he decides to help out in the final battle. Letitia Wright is also a stand out. She is fun, and never takes anything too seriously, yet plays an important part in the finale. Now for the bad part. Lupita Nyong'o and Angela Basset never get any time to shine until it is too late. Both are fine actresses, yet they don't add anything to the plot. Forest Whitaker is absolutely great (especially in street kings), but any depth that is given to him is ended quickly. I would have loved to see him more in the MCU.

With all that's been said I would love to experience Wakanda as a outsider and not just be thrust into the plot. As for Marvel, Black Panther is just average, but it could have been so much more. It is bogged down with too many villains, as well as too many protagonists. In the final battle, It is hard to root for anyone. Maybe that is the point.

If You expect politics with this one, better know your real world politics first. Wakanda is pretty much as Nationalistic as South Africa was during Apartheid. So please. Try to leave the politics out of it and see it as entertainment.

First the positives: The storys plot is good (and for the sake of this review, I will not tell you the plot) the characters in this this movie is great, especially Chadwick Boseman. He was born to play as ´´Black Panther´´. He was charming and serious. And, surprisingly, the main villain was also great. Micheal B. Jordan did a great job portraying Erik Killmonger. He was charming and he had a motive, which made sense, which many of the MCU villians lack. The action scenes were hit and miss, mostly hit. It had great choreograhpy and good editing... mostly. Now the negatives: The movie lacked character development. For example, T´Challa became a king and wants to protect his homeland and that's it. Nothing more to his character. And then there's this character that betrayed Wakanda for no reason and there was no reason for him to betray his homeland. Remember that I said that the action scenes were hit and miss? Well, the reason for being miss is that they don't know how to edit a fight scene. Sometimes the edits are not noticeable, but sometimes they do a quick edit and it's noticeable. And now... the CGI. Some of it looks nice, but some looked too... CGI-ish. Even though this movie have some flaws, it's still one of the best MCU movie. Expand

Money talks, and right now the film's box office dominance is sending a powerful and culturally important message to Hollywood and beyond. Stories of all colors and stripes are waiting to be told, and cinema fans are pining for fresh takes and innovative ways to convey those tales.

However--one way or the other--box office results should never be mistaken for a barometer of a film's quality. 'Black Panther' brings the fictional nation of Wakanda to life while shining a bright light on a handful of social justice issues that desperately need to be addressed. I particularly like their bad-ass female version of the Praetorian guard. But in end, those highlights aren't enough to overcome the handful of illogical moments scattered throughout the plot, the hewing of action scenes towards a more juvenile audience, and the frequently lame dialogue in which Michael B. Jordan's character is easily the worst offender.

The film follows T’Challa (Chadwick Bodeman), as he prepares to assume the throne of the country of Wakanda after the death of his father. He is destined to lead over a nation that to the outside world seems impoverished and rural, but is secretly a very technologically advanced society thanks to their Vibranium resources. The resources allow them to keep their capitol city hidden from the world.

As T’Challa attempts to assume the throne and rule over the various tribes of his country; a threat from his past both known and unknown arises. Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis) surfaces, T’Challa mounts and effort to bring him to justice which in turn sets a chain of events into motion. A mysterious and deadly figure known as Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), plans to obtain the Vibranium to exact a plan of revenge so severe it will lead to the nations of the world being subjugated and will divide even the most loyal citizens of Wakanda.

T’Challa must use his powers as The Black Panther and guardian of Wakanda to save his people and the very world from a threat that holds the fate of the world in the balance.
The film takes a while to get going as Director/Co-Writer Ryan Coogler takes his time introducing audiences to the world of Black Panther and especially the various characters. The strong supporting cast features Lupita Nyong’o, Angela Bassett, Danai Gurira, Forest Whitaker, Martin Freeman, and so many others that it is great to see such well-rounded characters.

The film does take a while to get up to the action but when it arrives; it delivers making the wait worth it. What I really liked was that the characters were well-defined as were their motivations. You did not have some cartoon mega-villain with some insane scheme, but rather a realistic and believable threat whose motivations were understandable though misguided.

Marvel has again delivered a very thrilling story that fits well into their extended universe and you will want to make sure to stay through all the credits for the two additional scenes which sets up future events for the Marvel Universe. “Black Panther” is a rousing success all around continues Marvel’s Cinematic Universe in grand style.

It really is it's own movie and I think that this is where it finds its image, how it's excelled far and wide from everything that's come before. It's different and it does a good job proving that you don't need the biggest names to come in for some superstar spotlight show stealing intervention. Boseman does a remarkable job in the lead role and the cast's performance sets great role models for viewers. Linked messages about race and a very well developed villain (or at least a very cool one) helps its story. It isn't the most entertaining or star-studded MCU film, but it doesn't try to, nor does it need to be. A well written script and jaw-dropping visual design help carry it across the well deserved ($1 bil worldwide gross) finish line. It invests more points in quality than entertaining re-watchability, and it succeeds well. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unfortunately I found this movie sub par in pretty much every respect. The story line was slow and dragged out. The action was really hit and miss, with laughable power differences between characters (an armoured rhino was considered the hidden "power" weapon of the movie). Additionaly they killed of the two most interesting characters of the black panther Universe in this film "Killemonger" and "Klaw", easily the two most charismatic and well acted roles in this movie. The storyline was oddly racist towards people not of African descent, I know I know its a ficitonal African country, but still, its an odd message to have as the major plot point of the film.

The only major posoitive that i found i had for this film were the visual effects, the "sand/Dust?" hologram tech was really well done.

Apart from this you can easily give this film a miss, as it contibutes next to nothing to the MCU, part from taking away two of its best characters. (Literaly nothing happens, the end of the film leaves the story in the same palce as the start of it)

Its political attack points are something that falls flat, however Killmonger's hate is something that is very real and relatable in this world. Something many people will claim the anti-hero to be right about, which is the most compelling part of the story. However, the portrayal of this theme is weak, and lacks complexity. The overuse of CGI, and the overall lack of real story makes this movie fall short of great. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm surprised I haven't read a comment that shinned more light onto the social stereo-types as well as the culture of American blacks. Black Panther unfortunately is slow and boring. The CGI was poor and any "fight" scene was terribly blurry. I am flabbergasted by many high reviews of this film, it was just as bad as the Incredible Hulk. The plot is hard to follow especially for kids as it present issues of: the crowning of the young King, to finding a long time enemy, to 2 ideas of how to proceed within the hidden tribe, to flipping towards the struggles of black American communities.

Half way through the film, they present an abandon member of their tribe who was raised in the poverty of America. This Cousin challenges T'Challa becoming king for a short time. Though this is where the film finally speeds up and sticks to 1 plot, it's filled with stereotypical social racism.

Lines are acted with cheesy effort, directing the tribe to send their weapons to their brothers and sisters around the world to kill the current leaders. Comments are continued to be made stating their people will rule the world. The most jaw dropping comment had to come for the Cousin's King when he states he wants to die like his ancestors as they too knew it was better to die then to live in bondage.

In our real world, where we are currently struggling with increased racism, the last thing our culture needs is a children's movie who confirms it's an "us" verses "them" world and the only solution is 1 type of people ruling the world. On the other hand, our King T'Challa is taught to keep the technology hidden to avoid it reaching the wrong hands. This comes to reality when the long time enemy re-surfaces showing he holds their secret vibranium material, abusing the power of this substance.

The movie would have been better had it focused on the African rich culture and left ideology of race wars out of it and probably needed Jordan Peele to direct it. This is not a children's movie, this is an adult film that presents the idea of using a corrupt super human to "fix" black poverty stricken communities using high tech weapons.

I'm so disappointed I didn't trust my gut and avoid this movie like the black plague. All the comments of nearly falling asleep is valid and I experienced the same sudden need to pass out. Don't believe the hype, watch Blade if you want to be empowered by a black super hero.

A culturally relevant- and long overdo- blockbuster film featuring a superhero based on a highly underrepresented minority; bravo for that. Trouble is, Black Panther just isn’t a good movie.

I’m sure some of my disappointment stems from the fact that I haven’t had the crushing experience of consuming media my entire life wherein the protagonist doesn’t resemble me, then finally seeing a mega-budget Hollywood spectacle featuring a superhero who does (I’m white). I can intellectualize it- and think it must be a revelation- but I’m not able to truly feel the same weight of the film that an African-American might.

Unable to fully absorb the film’s weight, I’m left to judge the movie solely on its merits as entertainment. I’m sure the movie loses something when those two things are divorced from one another, but for better or worse, it’s the only perspective I’ve got.

Black Panther’s acting was hit or miss, the action sequences were shot in a way that made them nearly impossible to follow (even a massive suspension of disbelief isn’t enough to get over the total obliteration of physics), and while the storyline was fairly straightforward, it’s presented in a superficial and confusing way with zero emotional impact. Also, there’s a special material that’s central to the plot and it’s beyond ridiculous. The stuff can very literally just do and be anything and everything the script calls for, it’s a bridge way, way, way too far. On the plus side, the setting was unique and impressive and the women warriors were portrayed as fierce, highly intelligent and principled. And, of course, Andy Serkis was his usual scene stealing self.

It’s a Marvel movie- and a subpar one at that- only elevated by its cultural significance (which, however, shouldn’t be the least bit minimized).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Typical reactionary BS from Marvel, thinly disguised as somehow progressive. Let's get this straight--in a film called Black Panther, our hero teams with a white CIA agent to kill the one radical/revolutionary figure (and the film's only African-American character, who's from Oakland no less--home of the Black Panthers). He defeats the latter's plans for militant resistance to the current oppressive racial system and instead basically opens a string of charter schools in Oakland. Uh huh. Expand

There are going to be some people who do not like this movie because they feel it is white bashing, but that could not be further from the truth. It is a well written story, and has a cast of great actors. It was one of those movies that you not only understand the villain but you can sympathize with why he does what he does. Beyond all of that it added a lot to the MCU, probably the most expect for the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Black Panther is a great movie as expected from the polished track record of Marvel movies. Black Panther has been a hit due to its depiction of a black protagonist which is a feat already achieved in movie super hero films with blade. However, it is not only about black characters it’s also about African culture and the effects of first world countries have on 3rd world countries in Africa. It brings into light racism, foreign aid and global responsibility. Unfortunately, by the end of the movie it does seem like more of a pretext to the antagonist motive for revenge than to the main themes of the film. The story itself is original twist on the social hierarchy of African countries in the world. The story starts with the main character already being a hero and successor to the throne which progresses the movie faster but does reduce the character development and this is the same for a few minor characters where they are not giving much backstory. The pacing of the film also seems to be a bit off with a lot of the start filling you in on what happened before the film and It seem like it’s back tracking on itself rather than telling a story; However, it does give a mysterious tone early on that sets up the twist in the middle of the film. I like the ending: The movie ends with the villain dying for his cause and the hero is impacted by his view and philosophy to change himself and his countries ways to better improve society and the world.
I believe that character development seems a bit lacking; but I also feel like the cast of the movie has improved the quality of the characters adding need personality. The cast has been praised for its almost all black cast of new and experienced actor mixed together: the actors I was not familiar with where still as capable as the one I was more familiar.
The costume design looks good and a mix of modern with tractional African attire and added to the setting of the film. My only critique to the production of the movie is that there was too much CGI It felt like the CGI was used even when it wasn’t needed and it detached me from the film, for example a lot of the fight scenes with black panther involved incredible acrobatics but it was all in CGI. The music for the first half of the movie was very immersive it was African instrumental music used as action music and was great. The second half of the film felt like a switch where it was action music sounding like African instrumental music or just standard action music.
My full review of Black Panther resulted in some minor critique to a small number of aspect of a great movie with a great plot and rich is in African culture. The quality of the actors and production quality is up to the standard set by Marvel movies and has resulted in a 8/10 from me.

The "What are those" joke sucks ass, the acting is acceptable, the action is acceptable but somewhat bland at points, Kilgrave is definitely better than most Marvel villains in movies (except for Vulture, Loki, and **** Hydra.) This movie certainly meanders at points, especially in the beginning, but at least it sets up scenes later in the second half. Daniel Kaluyaa is fine, his character is so ignorant it hurts, but his acting's fine. None of the characters really act like they're related to each other...

So why did I give this a 7... I don't know, it just doesn't suck ass if you don't think about it too much. Although this is definitely within the bottom half in terms of quality for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's not the Incredible Hulk, it's not Thor 2, and it's certainly more memorable than Age of Ultron... personally, I do think the movie presents some interesting ideas at certain points in the plot, especially towards the end when I thought it was about to become something quite unique in the superhero genre... then rhinos show up and the same stupid **** happens yet again. (By the way, I actually give this more like a 6.5, it's just that I have to round up since it's a 6.5 and not a 6.49)

Is this movie flawed? Yes. Is this movie better than anything DC has done within the last four years? Also yes... Wonder Woman is just as overrated as this movie, I hate to break it to you, but try rewatching that action scene in the alley, and you'll realize how poorly coordinated that scene in Wonder Woman actually is (or just watch RalphtheMovieMaker's review on it, he'll sum it up in a way that my stupid mind can't explain.)

Whilst Spider-Man: Homecoming was a decent enough film, the one I was looking forward to was Black Panther.... And I was bitterly disappointed.

The whole film seems like a rush job, as if it was made with a second draft of a rough script. The characterisations are bland and two-dimensional, with little or no effort put into creating empathy or depth. The dialogue is laughably bad, and the accents just make all the 'African' characters come across like those Nazis in war films who all speak English but with a Germanic twang.
The film does make reference to different countries having different languages, but why is the secret nation of Wakanda full of people who speak English?? The film makes a point about it being isolated etc, so it makes no sense.

But back to the script... The storyline is simply stupid. Nothing makes sense, and to be honest I felt more understanding for the film's main villain and his point of view than I did for those of the Hero..
And yes, we come to the worst aspect of the film, the villain and the whole 'hidden past' narrative element of the story.
The villain is introduced at the beginning, but then just vanishes from the movie for over an hour, while we deal with the right of succession of Black Panther to the throne, and the machinations of a South African arms dealer (with only 1 arm... Geddit!!). By the time the main villain comes back, it's just a tired cliche of the forgotten member of the royal family etc, etc, etc.. Ritual combat, in which the new king is simply thrashed in about 2 minutes (despite, apparently, training his whole life to be some amazing warrior)... It's nonsensical.

In fact, it's borderline patronising. Like the film-makers just said something like 'oh it's ok, it's simply another braindead Super Hero movie... Just throw in some more CGI and it'll be ok..'
But, unfortunately, someone said this was a film that breaks new ground in the genre. Black main character (completely forgetting Marvel's earlier trilogy of Blade films) and conscientous arguments about conservation, spiritualism, religious allegories....
No, no, and thrice no... We get some vacuous nods towards how humanity only exists to inevitably destroy itself, wrapped up in a heavy handed morality tale that has been told a million times better in a hundred other movies.

It's not like the action scenes are good either. The big spectacle set pieces are CGI snooze-fests, and the one on one fight scenes are badly choreographed and most are filmed in near darkness.

I can't recommend this movie. However, so many people will pay to see it, it doesn't actually matter. The Billion Dollar MCU will keep on rolling and, as we've seen, for every Iron Man, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Thor: Ragnarok and Ant-Man... We'll get crap like this and pretty much all the other movies in the franchise...

Very generic and boring super-hero based movie. Received way too much hype, and the good reviews are most likely because of obvious political movements. Terrible movie despite what people may say about it.

It really succeeded where in my opinion all other Marvel films have failed. As I haven’t been a huge fan of any of there other films, Marvel really made this one feel not like Marvel. This surprised me in the best sort of way as the real emotion and dilemmas the protaginist faced felt so human and like a real film, not just a blockbuster. The acting was quality mainly for Michael B Jordan for his role as Erik Killmonor but the entire cast was great. Special effects were pretty great too and once again the action scenes were pretty great. It never really goes beyond great though, but i really love what its done for black rights in society and the portrayal of Africa in modern films. Overall Black Panther is definitely worth a watch and i cant wait for the sequel. Expand

The cast could easily be marvels most talented and accomplished group with a mix of established heavyweights along with multi-faceted portrayals by the youngsters. Chadwick Boseman is finally a household Name after years of doing quality work. Ryan Coogler is a must watch director after 3 stellar high quality projects. This maybe a Once in a generation type of epic Experience that could fast become a cult classic. Marvel has been Patiently building towards infinity war, but my have climaxed with Black Panther. The 2nd time I saw it was better then the first. It is an addictive movie experience to be transported into this fantasy world of amazing people who are technologically and emotionally advanced as the citizens of Wakanda. The Dora Milajae Soldiers are so beautiful, the outfits again are incredible and really express the inner Power they wield. Killmonger is one of the best bad guys Marvel has produced, behind only David Tenets Kilgrave from Jessica Jones in My opinion. His backstory was masterfully crafted and represented in a way that almost endears you to the character. Almost, he is still vicious enough throughout to entice one to cheer at his eventual demise. All in All I'm not quite sure if I will stop seeing this movie. There may be some Rocky Horror Picture show fan discipleship brewing. I'm counting down the moments until my next viewing. Wakanda Forever. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I like it but it was just another Marvel movie to me. It had good acting and good characters. But a little cliche and too much CGI. And the jokes weren't that good in comparison to other Marvel movies. Most of them weren't bad, but okay I guess. Some of them were terrible though. If you have seen the movie, then you probably know exactly which one(s) I am talking about. Otherwise, it was good. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Disney did a good job marketing this movie to put emotion into it. The irony in Black Panther is that it is a film about exploiting the resources of Africa, without actually going to Africa and using Disney money to stimulate any economy there. Africa is a beautiful continent, and would have been an amazing backdrop. Unfortunately, Black Panther's backdrop is a green screen. Some gadgetry did not make any sense as anything conveyed by hologram could have equally been a text message, the "sneakers" never seemed to work, and it only takes a joystick to fly a plane?

The plot? Much like Hamlet, if the King and Denmark won. Black Panther becomes the worst king of Wakanda, loses his throne to a viable competitor. His family are sore losers, and lead a revolution to stop the king from sharing the secret of Wakanda. Once they win, they then share the secrets of Wakanda...

The lesson Disney is conveying is to not battle the powers to be, because they have better weapons.

Overall, only see Marvel if there's multiple heroes in it. Only see DC if there's one.

If you lean right politically you will like this movie because the hero national protectionist wins and the bad guy who wants to use the national power to solve world problems loses. But then in the epilogue the hero appears to change the policies of the nation, however I think he is just saying that he himself will help others out. I took it that the bad guy did not win and that nations should not help each other out. Expand

Black Panther's strengths are its lead hero, it's villains, and the culture of Wakanda. Its main weaknesses are it's effects, though. Still, this is a very good movie. Very worthy of the Marvel canon.

Visual effects yeah sure, it was a gorgeous movie. But when all your battle scenes are CGI, you need to rethink what you are watching. This set the new lowest bar for movies, lately they all seem to be coming from Disney.

Marvel Created Another Marvelous Movie

Black Panther was a surprisingly captivating movie. Though I presumed that it would be somewhat predictable, Black Panther contained countless twists and turns throughout the storyline. It was especially entertaining to see the creativity of the creators flourish in the culture of the Black Panther’s homeland.

The most riveting factor, in my opinion, was the setting. The location of where the main characters resided in was hidden from the rest of the world. The reason for this was to keep a valuable material hidden. The plethora of this material was the foundation of the city's futuristic technological advancements. The rest of society had only seen glimpses of its capabilities.

It was enthralling to watch individuals from the outside world try to take some for themselves. What was even more interesting, was the motive of the outsiders. One, of course, simply wanted its value and power, but another had a more personal motive. It was intriguing to watch that individual attempt to execute his manipulative plan. His greatest fault was his underestimating the Black Panther.

In my opinion, the futuristic component of movies is usually overrated and overused, but in this case the use of technology was really creative. The Black Panther’s suit had the most mind blowing features embedded in it. Also, the technology that was used for transportation was also very original.

I saw this movie at Ipic which, unlike Black Panther, I think is overrated. Unless you have a membership and regularly see movies, Ipic is too expensive. The seats at the AMC at Desert Ridge are just as comfortable and cost considerably less. The perks of being at Ipic include a small pillow, blanket, and being able to order food during the movie. The food is good, but you could get the same food for less after the movie.

Though I believe this to be a very strong Marvel movie, it is bogged down with far too much CGI and towards the end loses its message of individual strength. I will say it is probably one of the best scripts for a superhero film.

Every actor did a great job especially Michael B. Jordan who played one of the best villain in superhero movies ever; his motivations are so compelling that make you sympathy with him. The dramatic moments were touching and they are clearly inspired by The Lion King. Unfortunately, the action scenes are very very bad especially with the use of such poor CGI; the characters seemed as they were fully animated in some kind of a computer game. The major issue I have with this movie is the ending; it's so rushed and clichéd. I think the movie should have been separated into two parts because it ends weirdly, I feel that the ending came out of nowhere; it's very displaced. I hoped to see King T'Challa more stronger as he was in Civil War but they made all the women in the movie stupidly strong that their fight scenes overshadowed Black Panther's. Overall, I had so much fun watching this movie but I think it's so overrated. Expand
