This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Black Panther offers a fresh, new perspective from the washed down, mediocre genre Marvel is famous for. It is directed by Ryan Coogler, known for his previous movies Creed and Fruitvale Station. The movie follows the main protagonist T’Challa, played by Chadwick Boseman, who is both king and the legendary Black Panther, protector of the fictional African country of Wakand

The opening scenes feature much needed exposition, explaining how millions of years ago a meteorite made entirely of “Vibranium” struck Africa, giving the flora unique properties. One such fruit gives the user Black Panther’s superhuman abilities. As such, the Black Panther is tasked with protecting the nation of Wakanda safe from outside influence. This leads to conflict later on as the Black Panther of the modern world is tasked with either keeping traditions or embracing outside contact to the modern world. The second exposition sequence features a flashback of T’Challa’s uncle living in Oakland and getting mixed up in urban gangs. This scene sets up the hard hitting underlying theme of urban struggles minorities face. Next, the movie cuts to T’Challa being coronated king of Wakanda, setting up his struggle with his close advisors and even his own family members.

Black Panther broke many boundaries with its almost entirely black main cast. This is especially fitting as he was Marvel’s first black superhero, being first introduced in 1966. The acting, for the most part, was everything you would expect from a multi-billion dollar company. The acting by Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue, one of the main protagonists, and Forest Whitaker’s role as T’Challa’s mentor Zuri especially stood out to me. The acting had both Marvel’s light-heartedness and natural weight when it needed to. Coogler’s directing was the best thing to happen to Marvel’s ever expanding universe. If you have seen 2015’s Creed, you will understand Coogler’s unique directing style emphasizes the character’s motivation and sense of reality.
In Black Panther, there is almost a sense of two movies being put together into one. The first one being the classic Marvel movie, action-packed and thrilling to watch. And the second one having a genuinely distinct sense of authenticity in Coogler’s directing. If someone were to edit all the action out of the movie, you would not be able to tell it is a Marvel movie. It was honestly disarming to be able to feel real emotion coming from a Marvel movie. It has a more realistic, grittier tone than any other Marvel movie, it almost felt like a Dark Knight Movie, and I liked it.

The themes established early in the movie are clearly resolved by the end, which is rare for any superhero movie to get right. This is arguably Coogler’s biggest achievement with the film. In the end, after the main antagonist is defeated, T’Challa does the right thing. He opens up Wakanda to the world and establishes social outreach programs throughout the world. It offered a perfect ending to the film.

Marvel took a risk bringing on Coogler, and it paid off, big time. I don’t think any other director could have made a better adaptation of Black Panther. It is definitely a film to check out, or atleast watch on Netflix in a few months. I look forward to see what Coogler does in the future, hopefully Marvel brings him back to work on their other movies.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First I gotta say is not as good as everyone says it is it is a good movie but it has problems. First Micheal B. Jordan great actor well cast as Killmonger but it didn't feel right as to this point Micheal B. Jordan had portrayed the protagonist. His character was well written and I felt as he should not have been killed off he should have been kept around for the sequel. A positive is its limited amount of action scenes the movie is mostly about Waknada and its politicians and it does knot have a lot of action scenes but when thy come there amazing this movie has great effects, great directing, great cinematography, I definitely recommend this movie but dont let the hype get to you Expand

Sincerely, I do not understand the hype. In the past, my choice was similar to 90% of critics and viewers. What's gone wrong this time? I really do not know. May be I have gone nuts?

I am sorry if my failure to like Black Panther offends anybody

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am rating it a zero to help balance out the clear biased scores. The truth is there is nothing that stands out as terribly bad. A lot of people complain about the political agenda of the movie, however it seems to be something that is relevant to the black community which makes it a very logical topic to be the driving point. That said, there were quite a few things that seemed to break immersion for me. It seemed that the primary goal was to have as much african influence as possible so they would have advanced wakandan tribes with brutal mutalations like lip discs and scaring tatoos. This was out of place too in the way that they act like all of africa has a similar culture. Africa has 1.2 billion people and if feel it odd that they want to boil it down to such a degree. That said it did a great job in making me want to see more films exploring spacific African culture.
OK now the film, The effects were not ground breaking, it was visually pleasing. Acting was not too bad for what was given, however the characters were written very flat, The villian is upset for having been left behind but that is pretty much it, they did not do well to develop the main character, He was the same guy as when he started. It suggested that he is more willing to share their technology maybe but that doesn't seem so out of character for the guy when first introduced. There was no real apotheosis.
The plot was driven by the writers not the characters. Somehow an advanced civilzation is going to let an outsider with no interest in the good of Wakanda be the king of Wakanda. it was cringe worthy. The movie is full of serious cliches to the point that You can guess what happens next with 100% certainty. There was not anything technically wrong with it, It just leaves you yawning and bored half way through the film. Not worth the money

This one is no different as far as the plot goes and is predictable. I am giving it high marks for the look of the movie, however. Pretty people, pretty costumes and make-up, pretty places, good special effects. Fight scenes are just OK with the standard fast editing so you can't tell what's going on, and of course we have the ubiquitous boring car chase that I wish movies would stop doing. There is one flawed scene towards the beginning of the movie where the space ship flies into a bunch of trees and exposes the futuristic city. The city is completely lifeless! No cars, trains, people, other flying machines, etc. Weird. Did they run out of money for the effects? Overall a visual feast but not much else. Expand

I thought way to much time was spent on the set up, and the set up was boring. So many actors in this movie that I usually like, but not in this movie. Chadwick Boseman was great in 42 and I own that movie on Blu-ray, Dania Girira is great in TWD and Angela Bassett is great in 911 and AHS. Also I didn't think that Martin Freeman felt right in his part, it seemed a little forced. So many Marvel movies are better than this, like Iron Man "2008," X Men "2000," X2 "2003," Deadpool, Doctor Strange, The Avengers "2012", Guardians of the Galaxy "2014" Captain America Winter Soldier and Civil War. All of these movies listed are better, in my opinion, but Black Panther is better than Thor "The Dark World" and X Men "the Last Stand" but it is nothing special and Definitely Not Worth A Score of 88, AT ALL... The story was deeper that many superhero movies and easily tackled issues such as isolationism and the best way to bring power to the helpless. I was easily able to see things from the perspective of all of the characters and I fell in love with each of them. The acting was phenomenal and the attention to detail was beyond impressive. I adored the hair, outfits, music, and scenery that seemed to accurately capture an advanced civilization in Africa that had not lost sight of its roots. All in all, it is one of the best of the Marvel movies and I look forward to seeing more from these characters and from the MCU in general. Wakanda Forever! Expand

+Wakanda and the world building is really good
+The more political movie differentiates it from other MCU and superhero movies and it really works
+ The story is interesting and the character development for T.Challa really works
+The music for this movie is phenomenal
+ Killmonger is a really good MCU villain with an actual sympathetic backstory and believable motivation with a great performance by Michael B Jordan

- Killmonger does not have enough screen time and it takes half the movie for him to actually make a presence
- The action scenes apart from the casino/Korea are all bland and forgettable which is really bad especially for a superhero movie
- The CGI is really noticeable and is absolutely terrible in the final fight

Minor Nitpicks
.The first after credit scene really should've just been the ending though it is understandable to end where the film began
.Since this film is set right after Civil war, it is kind of weird how they brushed over T.Chaka's death

The tragedy is Black Panther will become a minor character in Avengers 6 now.

Black Panther was a bit of a disappointment after a lot of flawless MCU movies.

The acting, the photography and the underlying story were fabulous.

Where the film fell down was in pacing and the writing - most characters lacked complexity and emotional depth. Oddly enough, the only characters who came across as comparatively interesting were the villains or unsympathetic ones, the cast of the good guys came across as just a bit too one dimensionally goodie two shoes.

As a fan of the marvel cinematic universe and a fan of movies in general, everything really worked for me in this film. Director Ryan Coogler did a great job adapting this beloved comic for future generations. The film had some social commentary on real life events, which I felt enhanced the story and was not just pidgin holed in. It added a realistic backdrop to help flesh out the heroes and villains of the story, a line that we find is not always clear cut. Also, a nod to the actors & actresses in this film who all put on a top class performance. I really enjoyed everyone in this film, but my standouts were Andy Serkis, Letitia Wright and Michael B. Jordan. This was a very solid action adventure film that had the right amount of seriousness in it to make me feel invested in the characters. If you are a fan of the marvel cinematic universe I highly recommend this film. Expand

Just look at any of the positive reviews & see all the downvotes on every single one of them. Any other film does that have that issue, and that's because it was decided well before this movie came out by certain people that it was "racist towards white people," or "propaganda," just because of it being a primarily black cast.

In 2018, people literally cannot see past race. This movie was destined to be called "racist" regardless of what it did. The MCU has been around for 10 years, yet because one movie has a primarily all black cast it's "leftist propaganda?" Riiiighhttt...I'm not a leftists in any way, nor am I black (I'm white), but it was clear in the comments of every article leading up to this movie that people just can't be civil about stuff like this. They see faults in EVERYTHING, thinking it's all some elaborate conspiracy to remove white people from movies (or other idiotic similar ideas). As if the MCU isn't FILLED with white people, yet ONE movie that stars a black guy is to much? The character has been around for decades people... How is every other character ok, but having a movie staring a black one "pandering?" It's not. It's just your inability to move out of the political realm & think everything is some "war" on your stupid ideology. It's a friggin' movie...get a life & stop being triggered by anything that's not all-white. The best way to know they didn't watch the movie? Complaining about "oh the evil white people!" Yeah...that wasn't a theme whatsoever. The main villain is black, and he happens to be one of the BEST villains in the MCU. Including the non-movie side of the MCU, Loki, Kingpin, Kilgrave, Vulture, Ego (somewhat) & now Killmonger are some of the best baddies Marvel has put out there. The movie is set in Africa, and in a fictional country called Wakanda. Customs & traditions are based on African tribal culture mixed in with highly advanced technology hidden away from the world. Are there certain themes black people can relate with more-so than white people? Sure, that's to be expected. And what's wrong with that? There are endless movies with themes I relate with already and others couldn't, so why should I care if not 100% of the movie connects with me on some deep level? The overall message of doing the right thing, reaching out to help others, and uniting in the face of hardship & struggle instead of isolating yourself and only looking out for you alone is great.

And that's the exact thing we were taught in church, in school growing up and by our parents, yet suddenly now that we're adults we're supposed to be only concerned with ourselves? When others are hurt, hungry, helpless, bullied, sick, poor, etc. it's better to come together in times of crisis, lift each other up, and extend a helping hand...not cut yourself off & isolate yourself from your neighbors & hope the crisis doesn't affect you. Historically it ALWAYS backfires & makes things worse, and eventually you will suffer in some way from it. That's what this movies primary message is. That's what most every religious prophet in the judeo-christian religion teaches as well. And as I said, historically that's what we've learned too...World War 2 was only 75 years ago, and look what happened when everyone didn't want to intervene & stop the Nazi's rising to power. We tried to ignore them, appease them, and excuse the obvious red flags & warning signs. And people kept thinking "as long as it's not us, we shouldn't get involved!" Didn't work out so well...

And no, this movie didn't propose interfering in everyone else's lives. It literally said if you're able to HELP (key word) your neighbors & fellow man, you should do so if possible. The dialogue, the acting, the action, the pacing & the storytelling was all top notch for a comicbook movie. There were flaws like the CGI not being very good in several parts, or the short screen time of a certain character, but there weren't any movie-breaking issues. The movie wasn't as formulaic as many MCU movies, but it didn't break new ground in many areas either. Overall, it was a very well-told story that did justice to a great comic book character. I'd give it an 8.5 if possible, but if I had to pick between an 8 or a 9, I'd lean 9 since there weren't any glaring issues anywhere in the movie. Definitely recommend for REAL comic book fans & MCU fans.

If you're thin skinned & easily inflamed by trying to approach everything as if it were speaking to you on a political level, just stay home. You'll surely find something to get triggered about, just as anyone who looks hard enough can twist everything into whatever they want to think.

It is true that this movie is unique because of 90% of actors in this blockbuster are blacks. I have never seen such movie before and I don´t mean it is a bad idea. But only this fact can not make from movie a good movie. At least I got this feeling.
The story is stupid. Actor's performances are average. English-African accent is irritating after 5 minutes. The contrast of the rich and technologically advanced mini country in poor Africa is ridiculous. Scenes from Korea are a parody of secret agent movies. Costumes generally fit into some adult movies. Another Black panther. No, thank!

It felt very drawn out and slow paced, and I feel like Klaue should have been utilized a little more than what he was. However, people are overpraising it, giving it high enough regards as to put it in the top three Marvel movies. While the movie is highly enjoyable, I don't see it being way up there as the very best. There were some silly, over the top moments I thought did not fit with the flow of the movie. Battle Rhinos? ehhhhh. Clear Lexus product placement felt in your face. NOT ENOUGH KENDRICK!! People lining the walls of a cleared out waterfall hideaway?? Come on. T'Challa and Peter Parker was great in Captain America and were both my favorite in CA and it transferred over into this movie. Both Spider-Man and Black Panther are great movies.

In most movies, there is a point (or three) when I look at my clock, hoping things will end soon. There was no such boredom-point in Black Panther. The visuals were gorgeous, the action exciting, and the world intriguing.
When I say "the visuals were gorgeous," I mean jaw-dropping. It was a huge part of why the movie worked so well for me. The plot and characters were fine, but the look was what made me invest emotionally. Colorful, exuberant, textured, and sleek.
The only thing I felt was a real problem with the movie was the main villain. They tried so hard to make him hip and relatable that it frequently felt like he didn't belong in the movie. That may have been intentional, playing up the outsider vibe, but it broke the immersion for me. Also? There were times it felt like he was pandering, sort of a "We cool, and I'm'a spout lines that let you know we deserve awards." He almost brought my rating down to an eight. (But the movie did give me war-rhinos, and those are worth almost a whole point by themselves.)
Warning: the fight scenes, battle, and car chase and such are kickass, but you may grow bored if you aren't also interested in seeing another culture. Parts of the Thor movies take place in Asgard, but it's only a backdrop rather than something that matters... in contrast, Wakanda feels very present and relevant within Black Panther. Somehow, this movie made me feel like a participant in the ceremony and affairs of a mythical/sci-fi African kingdom. Weird, but awesome.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Where Star Wars Last Jedi failed to deliver on our hopes and aspirations, Black Panther delivers everything we wanted and beyond. It creates few questions openly or loudly, but it's inspiring ideas pushes people to active engagement with the movie. To me, this movie deserves its accolades and even more praise/esteem/box office rewards than Star Wars Last Jedi (but alas, Black Panther is not a franchise like the other top tier Marvel or even Star Wars level characters).

This is perhaps one of the best movies produced by Marvel. It is their answer to the Nolan's Dark Knight. Yes, it's near perfect, the story plays out with more nuance than most super hero movies, the characters are developed better, and the villain is sympathetic and even somewhat relatable if somewhat misguided.

There's levels on top of levels of plot, history, and themes. For me the movie plays with 3 complimenting plot ideas that work as a mesh of 3 movies' concepts, you have a James Bond type scenario, then the story grows into a Dark Knight morally ambiguous quagmire of modern issues and Greek tragedy, and finally you have Lion King-esque theme aka Shakespeare's Hamlet, where the rightful king must rise to the challenges of life and the world around him. To balance all three without compromising any of the story to do it, this movie achieved a perfect balance of plot and character.

The plot is lost in this movie, as hollywood continues to think that we are looking to them for political opinions. We have no interest in their opinions, and wanted a movie about the Marvel universe. What we recieved was sloppy acting, contradictory plot points, and a good sountrack. This movie would be without controversy and just as important to the point that they wanted, had they not forgotten that this was entertainment first.

In short, this is the first Marvel movie that I do not think that I will watch twice, which is a shame, being how great the actor introduced him in Captain America.

A few times the acting was absolutely terrible. I sat there and thought oh this is supposed to be a dramatic moment but the acting, mainly in part of the female actors were just flat.

They rehashed scenes from Civil War but didn't do them as well as the CGI was terrible.

It's like critical affirmative action and actually insulting to serious black artists in all media to overpraise such junk just to be PC. I never go to Marvel films, so maybe they are all as cheesy as this, for all I know. But this movie has pathetic production values compared to Star Wars A-list movies, for example. But at the heart of the film is simply preposterous nonsense. It's pathetic that some African Americans seem to find the movie somehow uplifting or inspiring. It will be great if the movie teaches black kids that STEM courses might be cool, so they should work hard in school. But what's with the fantasy that there's a magic African country that bears no relationship whatsoever to the real black African world? The late great black cultural critic Stanley Crouch used to talk about how African Americans need to stop being "lost" by orienting themselves strictly to the truth and reality as their only hope for actual advancement for themselves individually and for their race in America. The silly fantasies of Black Panther are a step backward into flattering fantasies of lostness, instead of a serious grappling with things within the black community holding blacks back. Expand

I honestly think it's one of the better Marvel films and is, for the most part, visually astounding. The writing is pretty standard for a Marvel film, it's formulaic but it gets the job done well enough to entertain the intended audience. This film wasn't so much created to be a statement or offer a different outlook on life or the world around us. This film isn't Logan, which took the concepts of death and depression and used them in various aspects of the narrative. Nor is it as fun and offensive as Deadpool. It's meant to make money while entertaining a broad audience, which it does. Some of the visuals in this film were taken straight out of the comics and look almost watercolor at times, which I thought was really interesting. There are many other aspects of the visuals that I thought were honestly astounding while there were a few (more specifically the rhinos) that looked like they were right out of an old PS3 video game.

The soundtrack is comprised of a mixture of rap, hip-hop, and traditional African music. I honestly really liked this soundtrack and it was honestly great to see something original rather than having them use licensed music.

Will I be buying this for myself when it comes out? Probably not, but I wouldn't be disappointed if I received it as a gift or a birthday present.

The greatest thing I can say about this movie, is that it corrects the train wreck of Thor Ragnarok. I was almost ready to write off the MCU after that movie. Black Panther prevented this.

Trying to be as spoiler free as possible, this movie has many good points, but few, but GLARING problems. The movie is a classic Marvel movie along the lines of Phase 1. Good job.

The director is a bit short of experience and it shows. Pacing wasn't great, but not as bad as some have noted. The views and scenes were just not quite what was probably intended. I don't think he could quantify what his vision was. Experience will eventually give him the ability to make some great scenes in the future when he learns to quantify his vision.

This is also revelatory in the horrible mish-mash of CG. There were a dozen studio of various skill. You get some great looking CG and then others near Spawn level horrible CG. It doesn't appear that he had the capacity to tell people they suck and do it again, or get fired. This could be either through confidence, or communication.

The story was typical of what you would expect from Phase 1 Marvel movies. Set up the hero, give him a moral conundrum to find his own inner goodness, challenge the hero with an outside nemesis, earn redemption and establish his goodness to the audience. This was done relatively well and only failed in execution, though minimally. Almost 90% of the movie was well done Marvel.

I heard that Micheal B. Jordan's performance was of the show stealing variety, but only because many of the others were a bit lackluster. Even Chadwick Boseman wasn't a stand out. Many characters were just expositional players. Honestly, if it weren't such a small part, Andy Serkis was the show stealer.

Thankfully, comedy was just right. Not over the top, slapstick and not under cooked one liners. There were a bad bit of snark, but not cringy. The overall pacing of the comedy was perfect.

The WORST part was the music. Again, I think it might be a part of the lack of experience of the director, Ryan Coogler and a bit of nepotism. Ludwig Göransson was in charge of many of Googler's previous films music. The music was just haphazard. The times when it should have been sympathetic, was just barely acceptable. Then you have the downright jarring. When I notice the music and it is discordant to the scene, it drops you out of the story. I think a stronger, more experienced hand in the driver's seat would have done the movie better.

All in all, this was among the better of the Marvel origin movies. It wasn't too cliche, but a definite PLUS ONE for fan service. This was a quality entrance to the world of the Black Panther. If there was just a bit more experience from the director, we might have seen an 8, possibly even a 9 with the correct music department. Perhaps choosing people based on quality, rather than nepotism. Just because your buddy helped you in your last film, doesn't qualify them to be the right person for this movie.

Then to the people who want this to be a symbol for them, well as Georgie says, "I leave symbols, to the symbol minded."

Following T'Chaka's death his son T'Challa returns to the advanced, but secretive, African nation of Wakanda to assume the throne. Unfortunately this transition is not going to be a peaceful one.

The Black Panther is a good film but, after seeing so many extremely positive reviews, I couldn’t help but come away a little disappointed. The significant use of African culture and traditions does make a pleasant change from the over familiar New York setting, perhaps doing more than anything else to set it apart from other Marvel movies. There is also no shortage of interesting characters, including one of the most interesting ‘bad guys’ in Micheal B Jordan’s Erik. Personally however I found the pacing to be a little uneven at times and there was more than one occasion where a felt a little disinterested in proceedings. Overall the action scenes were also somewhat lacking compared to the best the Marvel movies have offered in the past and it was actually a little difficult to see what was going on during some of the fights with so many quick camera cuts. A good movie but not as entertaining as the best Marvel has offered over the past decade or so.

"Black Panther" was a film that had me excited from the get-go, honestly even more so than the extremely-hyped and much-anticipated "Avengers: Infinity War" (don't get me wrong, still looking forward to it, just keeping my expectations in check). I'm so happy that "Black Panther" didn't disappoint me, and it's personally one of my favorite films in the canon thus far. I loved the film for how it focused so much on character-building than just throwing baseless action scenes into the fray, and I also felt the characters in the film were some of the most memorable, well-written ones in the MCU thus far. The design of Wakanda (and the film as a whole for that matter) is breathtaking, the acting is superb, and the film succeeds at being both emotional and often quite humorous. This is another very strong entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe canon, and it's absolutely worth watching! Expand

One on hand, the critics are raving for this movie, saying it is a "game-changer" and things of the sort, but on the other hand, we have regular people saying the movie is "decent". I, like the majority of those that have seen this film, would have to agree that it is simply...decent. I cannot disagree more with the critics when they say that this movie is "game-changing" and "revolutionary", because if you get past the nice visual effects, this film is rather dull, not to mention cliché.

Not even half an hour into this film, I found myself wanting it to end, or at least begin living up to the hype, but the unfortunate truth is that something of the sort never came around. The action was really the only thing keeping this movie afloat, that and the visual effects which seem to be the best part of this production. At times I was simply in awe of how beautiful some of the scenery was, only for that admiration to be decimated by your classic superhero-movie-moment, or, perhaps even worse, a very cheesy joke. In my opinion, the dialogue is so bad, it rivals the Star Wars prequels, and that is an accusation I would never take lightly.

So, if you're like me and have been a huge fan of the MCU, definitely see this film because you won't feel like you wasted time on this film. Keep in mind, however, no matter what the critics say, there is nothing that this film does that has not been done in nearly every single superhero film to date. Not revolutionary, simply entertaining.

First of all, let's be clear: this is just another Marvel movie. It is as unique as a Big Mac. There is an enormous amount of CGI, infantile plot twists and the usual superhero cringe-worthy dialogue. To make matters worse, the movie indulges in some in-your-face black power lecturing that gets old really fast. I certainly applaud Marvel for putting a black director in the helm of one of its franchises and for making a movie comprised almost in its entirety of black actors/actresses, but that should not obscure the fact that this a mediocre movie. Black Panther picks up right after the events of Captain America: Civil War following Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa/Black Panther) and the rise of a new king and the struggles that come from the responsibilities of it. Performance wise everyone did a flawless job, between the accents of the Wakanda people to the beautiful, Blade Runner like city designed to the artistic fight scenes and tightly written dialogue creates a movie worth watching. Every character, even Stan Lee with his famous cameo, just come off with such power and leaves the viewers with such impact and lots to think about from each line of dialogue delivered. Both Boseman and Jordan make the ranks of fans and critics favorite characters in the MCU to date along side with the array of supporting actors (Freeman, Gurira, Nyong’o, Whitaker, Kaluuya, and Serkis). Action wise this movie is visually stunning. With Coogler transferring his use of beautiful follow cams from Creed and using the same Cinematographers from Creed and Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle to choreograph the fights and film them so flawlessly and beautifully makes Black Panther one of the best action movies of the year by far. Special Effects look beautiful with the Kinetic Suits and the Vibranium infused weapons used by the Wakanda warriors and Boseman. Each site of the city gets more and more beautiful with its subtle yet so appealing to the eyes. By far my favorite was the kinetic energy used when the Black Panther suit was charged up. Ryan Coogler gave it his all with Black Panther and didn’t hold back a single bit with is beautifully written film that was directed so perfectly. I was a fan when I saw his work with Jordan on Fruitvale Station back in 2014 and loved his work even more with yet again Jordan in Creed and how Coogler has cemented himself in with the MCU as being one of the best directors working to date. My overall Score for the film has to be a 9.5/10 Expand

The characters in the film are full of depth and their relationships with each other are developed and written really well. Each character is given time to shine in the film with heartfelt motivation and genuine depth. The script in the film is great as well, creating some excellent dialogues and remarkable scenes that are emotionally powerful. The production design is also great, with brilliant use of colour and impressive mix of tradition and technology in the settings of the film. Combining the amazing production design and the fantastic costume design, a highly realistic nation and culture of the fictional country Wakanda is created. The cinematography, acting and music are solid in the film. The film also successfully explores political, social and cultural themes with just the appropriate emphasis within the fantastic narrative. The action sequences are competent, but they are flawed with occasional over editing, and some CGI that look unfinished. Fortunately the action scenes contain great emotional weight from the characters. Another flaw of the film is its pacing, which makes the film feel like it’s split into two, and the pacing of the second half of the film sometimes feel too quick. The pacing issue also caused some cliched moments. Ultimately, Black Panther contains obvious but minor flaws, nevertheless the film is an immensely satisfying film that is certainly one of the best in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. 8.6/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a really well made movie with some deep political messages- but the reason it is not a 10 is due to its tone. Part of me wanted it to stick to being a kids movie and another part wanted it to get darker and more gruesome. A lot of kids will not get the scenes that are inverted iconic moments from Roots or the references about "the sun never setting on the Wakandan Empire." Also, there a couple of CGI moments that don't look the best. But it is certainly one of the best marvel films that I've seen due to its acting, writing, the nuances, and how it is unapologetically political. I'm really glad this movie has all the success it has, while some of the critics heralding it as the second coming could check themselves a bit, one should not let that diminish the fact it is a great movie. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Music is defined as, "An orderly arrangement of notes that are pleasing to the ear. Similarly, when I watch a movie, I look for this same "orderly arrangement" of scenes and music that are pleasing to the ears and eyes. This lack of an "orderly arrangement" made the movie hard to follow. It looks as if the Director tried too hard to compete with more accomplished directors, such as the maker of "Gladiator". So, I leave this advice for this movie's director: Begin with the end in mind. Understandably, there is a big gap in the critic ratings. For those that ranked this movie "10", ask them: What did you like best about this movie? Watch how many times you hear, "Ah...Well...Let me see...I plan to see it again." Then, you can decide for yourself. Expand

Visually, this film is also impressive with it showing great care in displaying the vibrant culture thats represented in the film. Most of the problems in this film, for me revolve around its second half where I really felt like its becomes too caught up into itself as it doesn't take any risks and wastes opportunities to really carve out Erik Killamonger as the villian I envisioned him to be behind Jordan's intense, focused and rage fueled performance. All in all, its a pretty good movie, go see it but don't get caught up in the unfair expectations that the media have placed unto the film. Overall score: B- Expand

While Spider-Man: Homecoming delivered some strong performances alright, Marvel otherwise fails time and time again in humane believability, including their latest effort in Black Panther. It still occasionally assumes the same mentality as Marvel’s three projects of 2017: Most of the confused stars attempt seriousness scene until somebody suddenly explodes in a snarky one liner the next to ruin the emotive flow.

The key player, Chadwick Boseman, proved his onscreen believability in 42, except here, the identity in his sleepy eyes mimic everyone else’s. The second-hand man, Michael B. Jordan, got his earned universal acclaim in Creed, but here puts on a forgettable mannerism any idiot could play to the same results. Then T’Challa’s love interest, 12 Years a Slave’s Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, expresses no memorable active girl power besides her first scene wrongly swinging a gun like a club. These indistinct portrayals appear very distanced by the way they talk at each other rather than to each other, as if they just glanced last-minute at the script before the camera rolled.

Unlike Malcolm X’s famous statement, “a man who stands for nothing will fall for anything,” several female characters should’ve fallen out of the final draft, because they stood for nothing other than the hero’s plot importance. The screenwriters chose even greater wrong turns in the dialogue because they were too fearful to take risks, resulting in bland morals pulled out of Intro to Screenwriting 101. Such morals included: “No man is perfect,” “You get to decide who you will be,” and, “Fight for what you love.” Uninspired, much? Heck, even the Stan Lee cameo turned out dull!

Onto Wakanda, a friend of mine said he saw Wakanda’s political decisions as the negative ideas between Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X mixed together. Honestly, it is a neat observation, but the little sense the world makes turns any political agenda it attempts ineffective. In its essence, Vibranium, the strongest substance in the universe, fell from the cosmos millions of years ago to form the whole African civilization, which now somehow features high-tech buildings coexisting alongside traditional African walkways. Did nobody think of including the apparently endless Vibranium supply in the clothes they wear?

Wakanda’s visual style also essentially insults Africa’s old traditions by making it look hip under overused bad CGI, especially since modern slang made its way into this culture trapped in the past: “wazzup” and “antelope in headlights” to name a couple. A creative visual choice includes expositional Wakandian text, except after the first twenty minutes it goes away forever—leaving the established African culture to get outshined by a rock music fueled car chase tainted hot pink by South Korea.

Although, plenty of strong emotional elements in the picture’s scope still pay off, including some Oakland Black kids who shoot hoops into a milk crate to contrast the massive crystal clear futuristic city seen shortly after. Surely Black Panther might help Black audiences feel inspired from the tribal drums pounding to the heartbeat of a tense battle on top a steep waterfall, spears gradually closing in on the combat. Topping off the roller coaster ride in the climactic fight, the immersive sound of a train built by the Wakandites glides across your scalp to force your attention on what’s important. At a more melancholic level, Ryan Coogler’s direction evokes sorrow in his symbolic use of violet, found primarily in the heart-shaped herbs grinded into spiritual liquid. I would love it if Coogler soon took on greater projects under a more social responsible studio.

Now look back at Black Panther’s blatant political agenda. The focus is not only on empowerment towards African Americans, but makes those who historically enslaved them look bad, this makes its way into the film, purely for the sake of brief laughs, when White people call Blacks “savages,” only to be in turn called “colonizers.” Once the racist backlash seems to be over, a first end-credits scene literally screams Black Lives Matter with no sign of being subliminal about it, setting off a second last end-credits scene that throws in one last unnecessary joke degrading a White guy. People suffer in many ways, so rich nations and poor nations must choose to take responsibility in global financial sustainability, a healthy mindset Marvel slaps right in the rump.

Seriously, we live in a time when a Black man can sit in the president’s seat, yet still sense the need to stress about diverse representation?!

That third act, Attack of the Clones bad (the rhinos). Humour landed like a brick to the face and the jury is still out whether Boseman doesn't have cue cards when he reads his lines. Also someone please stop Martyn Freeman from ever doing an American accent again.

It was a shame about all the political agenda garbage they shoe horned in. It added nothing to the film and sometimes it was just lazy racist jibes, seemed really out of place for a Marvel film.

200 million budget, I don't know what they spent it on. It definitely wasn't that windows 95 CGI or the 3 to 4 tiny sets they made for the entire film.

Plus point is that Disney did another Casino based scene and it didn't suck arse. The South Korea bit was great and Micheal B Jordan redeemed himself from Fan4stic. The hard line Army General actress (don't know her name) was a show stealer for me.

One of the weaker ones so far, weakest of phase 3 by a stretch. Shame because I was hyped for it and came out really disappointed. 5/10.

First and foremost what i enjoyed from the movie was the characters this is one of the few movies whereby almost every character no matter main-cast or side cast was done right.I enjoyed Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther,Lupita Nyong'o as Nakia,Micheal B Jordan as Killmonger and special shoutout to Danai Gurira and Letitia Wright as they portrayed their roles very well mostly because i didn't expect them to be so good. Now since this is a Marvel movie we all know there is going to be humor and Black Panther truly did have some funny moments that were well executed and rather unexpected with made the movie more of a fun time to watch,BUT AGAIN since this is a Marvel movie there was some campy and unneeded humor which toke away some of the seriousness of the movie sometimes and just uneven, and it can be disappointing that Marvel still don't know how to balance funny moments and serious moments sometimes.

However the action was very good,Black Panther has some of the most enjoyable action sequences since Captain America: Civil War and i especially liked how some action scenes were gritty and grounded while other fight scenes had more of a comic book movie style which was very fun to see and also a bit different. Now for the story,i personally liked the story not just because it was different than any Marvel movie because of it's cast or location but because it related to the real whole in some aspects and we haven't seen that since Captain America: The Winter Soldier dealing with stuff like politics or social commentary so it was greatly appreciated and needed.

The Villain Killmoger is easily in the Top 5 if not Top 3 of best Marvel villains or best villains in recent superhero movies, because who understood his motives for being the way he is and why he is doing the things he did.Micheal B Jordan was good in the role had felt like a genuine threat to Black Panther and Wakanda and his motives again weren't generic or cliche and his story is clear and fully explained in the movie.

As for the bad things in the movie well,i didn't find anything that was a huge problem with the movie however this was not a perfect film.I already stated that some of the humor was forced and it doesn't seem like Marvel is learning from this also some character motivations for me shifted too quickly or easily for my liking, what i mean is during the course of the movie some events may lead a character to change during the course of the movie which seems weirdly easy and almost rushed for the sake of it this goes for Black Panther himself and Daniel Kaluuya's character but luckily it was too bad that it took your focus off the movie and another thing is certain things are not explained in the movie like the spiritual aspect is not explained and certain plot points come out of nowhere and the movie just expects you to be okay with this which is just super lazy.

Also these maybe nitpicks but some of the special effects look weird and some of the African accents are exaggerated (don't know maybe because i'm African and i notice this stuff). Now as i said the movie is pure Marvel 101 but it is different in how it executes things like the villain and how the hero grows from his challenges and learns from his mistakes which is good story-telling and the world of Wakanda was well detailed and again the African culture aspect of the film as super on point and the world building was well done and sets up the future of Black Panther without being forced.

Some may say this is a typical Marvel movie and some of that is true but with over 10 films from Marvel it is nice too see that there can be new concepts and ideas to explore while maintaining the humor, action and well done story-telling that most Marvel movie have and can't wait for the future.
