There are a lot of positives for this movie and some of the set pieces are truly remarkable. The only real negatives about this movie is the dialog and a few moments of phoned-in CG

An absolutely empty, vacuous, flat entry in the MCU, which displays nothing of interest on plot or character development.

Visually pleasing really well directed and shot action scenes, and amazing futuristic vibe to it. The actors did a decent job on their roles. Also the plot was pretty local and did not met the standards of today's marvel universe's huge roles but it did fill in one chapter which was needed for the future movie. The music in action scenes and tension ones was really great, also the plot had a taste of traditional African traditions which was breath of fresh air in the MCU. The humor was above average and it got a few really hilarious moments as well, due to it's humor. But the real show steal-er was the plot's simplicity yet interesting. Which made for immersion and entertainment at the highest value. It's a really fun movie to watch and it does not fault in the pacing of the plot and unfolding the story. Overall it's a very good movie and a great piece of the MCU. Expand

As usual with these kind of movies the villains were a lot more interesting than the good guys. The CGI was quite bad in places, particularly the boss battle at the end. It was ok overall, but not much better than that. Quite long as well. Not as good as wonder woman. Expand

It is one of the best Marvel films and a fresh instalment into the cinematic universe. However, it still falls short in many aspects that the average blockbusters and Marvel properties always do... The writing is a bit better than usual, in that it has one character with purpose and a satisfying arc, and certain story elements carry more weight than usual. Still, the film falls into the usual trap of inconsistent characters, logic that the film explains but then contradicts all the time, and a predictable narrative with poor pacing, evolution and too much lazy exposition. The costumes and soundtrack were better than expected, but the visual effects are terrible considering the standard of recent films in the franchise. The direction overall was slightly more aware than average but felt bland at times with a lack of technique and intelligence. Most of the performances were competent and the score was surprisingly good. Overall, it is somewhat better filmmaking and writing than most Marvel films, but was elevated by the politics and social influence it had. Expand

The first half is ok, the second is not. Characters are very cool, but the pace of the movie is way too slow, thirty minutes too long at the least. Action scenes are few, and the center of the plot is a royal family feud. Not very superhero-esque.

Nothing in this particular movie stands outOverhyped is the only word that comes to mind when thinking of this film. I really went into it expecting to see one of the best movies that the MCU has to offer and I left extremely disappointed. Nothing in this particular movie stands out as special except for the fact that it is about a superhero who is black. The fact that this is up for best picture is an absolute shame and warrants an apology from the academy. It is nothing more than just another hype train of a film escalated by the fact that it did something as "different" as have a predominantly black cast lead it. It's "Moonlight" all over again! I honestly feel that "Blankman" was a better black superhero movie than this overrated hunk of mediocrity. Expand

Nothing special going on... A generic love story, one interesting and one boring villain, an apocalypse kind of story mixed with cringeworthy dialouge and bad CGI.

Now for the more controversial part; "The Black oppression myth" as I like to call it.

Hang on, I do know the history of slavery in the Americas, but it's not about that. Black Panther has a black superiority and victimhood complex. The characters of the movie joke around with words like "colonizer" and "white boy" (to make them look immature) frequently. They (the villains) aren't shy about talking of a global white genocide either.

Basically; this movie's plot is of a prince becoming king of a fantastical hidden african country with super strict border controls and tribal culture together with alien like technology...

Watched every Marvel film to date. Black Panther is by far the most dull.

After watching the first cartoony CGI scene of the Black Panther wrestling in a dark suit in a dark jungle: almost turned it off. It's like 80% of the CGI budget went to building Wakanda (which looked great). 20% went to the CGI live action scenes - which look comically fake.

The one thing that makes the Black Panther a hero? Vibranium. Can you imagine if the only thing special about Wolverine was an Adamantium suit? There is a glaring lack of imagination here and the climax of the picture is utterly forgettable.

While the user score is currently split 50/50 between positive and mixed/negative, the glowing critic scores are wildly undeserved.

Director Ryan Coogler’s addition to the MCU received acclaim from critics and audiences alike, as well as breaking an impressive $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Perhaps key to the success of Black Panther is the way that it thrills both fans of the superhero flick but also transcends the usual bounds of the genre, in its characters, design and themes. This is a film that subverts the typical Marvel formula, something which is long overdue.
Chadwick Boseman comfortably leads the film as the eponymous hero, venerable monarch by day and suit-sporting vigilante by night. T’Challa rules the nation of Wakanda, a futuristic and technologically advanced utopia shielded by a mask as a third-world nation. T’Challa’s ex-lover, Nakia (played on expected brilliant form by Lupita Nyong’o) fights the case for Wakanda’s moral duty to share the truth of their wealth; this is one of many surprisingly complex questions which weave their way satisfyingly into the narrative. Taking this even further is the film’s villain, Erik Killmonger, a Wakandan isolated from the kingdom, calling for a revolution by black people against their oppressors. Michael B. Jordan is a charismatic villain, wonderful shades of humanity embedded within his performance, providing a fitting and scarily relatable foe for the Black Panther. A spunky ensemble (though prone to spouting exposition) completes the mix, Letitia Wright’s Shuri acting as the Q to T’Challa’s Bond and Martin Freeman delightfully Watson-esque as an obliging CIA agent.
For the most part, Black Panther is a stunning movie to witness, embracing its Afro-futurism with a colourful and vibrant design. The film feels very much buried in its cultural roots, which gives some understanding to the film’s significance. Ludwig Goransson provides a luscious and innovative score and rap numbers courtesy of Kendrick Lamar complement the action. The action sequences in the movie are also riveting; “I never freeze” pronounces T’Challa coolly in an early scene… and neither does the film itself. Pace never lags in relentless and sharp action sequences, gripping the audiences to their seats and, at some points, providing a strong emotional pay-off. The final act is certainly where the film is at its most disappointing, descending into an increasingly loud and banal CGI-fest, which, whilst not uncommon in a Marvel flick, is certainly beneath the calibre of Black Panther. Visual effects are also dodgy at certain instances, oddly plasticky and unfinished-looking. For the most part, however, Black Panther delivers soundly for popcorn moviegoers, never allowing its themes and cultural statements to overtake the pure entertainment.
One only has to see Black Panther to understand the reasons behind its sensation and the whisper of Oscars floating around. Ryan Coogler has crafted a visually staggering blockbuster, which manages to tell an engrossing story, with plenty of popcorn thrills, yet also a remarkably deep cultural message that boasts great relevance. Black Panther is without a doubt one of the most exciting and inventive Marvel outings yet.

There was no tension, no suspense, no exciting mystery to unravel. The first half of the movie is a painful slog to sit through, lots of talking about family issues which aren't compelling due to a lack of conflict between those involved, that is until Killmonger shows up. He is one of the better characters in the film. T'chala is very stoic and reserved and shows no charisma. I also don't appreciate comments like "colonizer" directed towards the white character as if today's white americans are somehow responsible for slavery. Many of the whites living in the usa came from immigrant Eastern European families that moved to the states in the 1800s, and most certainly did not have African slaves in their native countries and historically played no part in the African diaspora. On top of that, they weren't even considered "white" when they first immigrated and were treated poorly. I wish Hollywood would get their history right if they are going to make politically charged movies. I'm Black and I know this. I wish to see a film where whites, black, asians, etc. are all treated with respect and guiltless. As a black woman I am disgusted to think Hollywood thinks I must be a bigoted racist with an axe to grind against all white people.

Did I mention that this movie is boring? My father fell asleep while watching lol The whole time I was glancing between the film and my phone, waiting for it all to end. It was like being trapped in prison for 2 hours. My family were all quite disappointed with this film.

Good things: Black Panther gave the black children a superhero to relate to which is very sweet. That's it.
Bad things: The script felt very rushed, The acting was **** except for Michael B. Jordan, The humour was cringe worthy and even if this movie tried to send a message it was too obvious and right in your face. Every time Michael was on the screen he started shouting "I am gonna free every black person alive and I am gonna destroy the white people". Every goddamn time! I would have liked the movie much more if they kept the message more subtle. And the pacing of this movie was.......... it can't be described in words. It has some of the worst CGI I have ever seen. Every fight scene looks like a mario video game. I don't even know what to write. This movie was so bad that I was at the edge of my seat because I almost fell asleep.

You won't see anything new in this movie that Marvel hasn't already done. Acting is poor, CGI is the worst in MCU. You could predict what will happen in the end after seeing the first 15 minutes of it.
Black Panther was much more epic in Civil War.

It's definitely not the best Marvel movie, I'd probably put it in the top 10. This might be invalid criticism and more subjective but I personally find this not and infinitely rewatchable Marvel movie. All my favorite Marvel films I can watch many times but still enjoy each viewing equally. Once you know what happens in this film, the movie can drag. It is still a good film though, just not the best. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If someone wanted an example of what the copy and paste comic book hero story is, this movie is a perfect example. Good guys, bad guys come in, bad guys threaten to blow up the world, good guy wins. Take this formula and change a bit for the next comic book hero movie. Movie was just so incredibly predictable. Actions scenes were somewhat of a bore. CGI for a very expensive movie wasn't all that great and just looked just very CGI-ish.

Overall, I would not recommend this movie. Story is far too basic to be interesting and the action doesn't add nearly enough.

At best, Black Panther is a subpar superhero movie. No aspect of the film, be it the acting, writing or music are anything more than simply adequate. Black Panther is possibly one of the least creative films I have ever seen when compared to brilliant stories such as Spawn or Blade.

Then you have wishy-washy click-bait based 'news' articles online saying that in order to be able to grow as an individual, white people "need" to see this film in order to be able to disconnect from themselves. What a load of BS.

Watched Black Panther yesterday. Good movie overall, but definitely overrated.

For once, the MCU entertainment formula didn't serve its purpose in a movie where the absence of formulaic comedy would have been gladly taken.

As opposed to Thor: Ragnarok, The Avengers or Iron Man, Black Panther had several opportunities to make the jump from 'everyday comic book movie' to Sci-Fi Must - as 'Star Wars' Must, the kind of must where you can picture yourself wandering in Wakanda, a fictive country with a universe bigger to discover than all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole.

So what can we say about this movie? Well, obviously the missed opportunities to reach higher grounds. Which appears more and more frustrating as the movie goes on.

Is it true to the MCU? Yes, sure.

Too much? Yes, as the limit can be seen from the moment when the plot is given straight forward, just like every other MCU movie where this formulaic template follows. From then on, the magic you felt up to the second half of the movie is slowly fading away.

So much potential going to waste yet again, thanks to a cinematic universe.

If you are a Marvel fan, watch it.

If you're more into movies, don't.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to say, while it is an entertaining movie, it is not the monstruous marvel most people are claming it out to be. I don't know if it was the fact that the Black Panther was teased and introduced in Civil War in a way that made me heighten my expectations, but I came out heavily disappointed.

The visuals are good, taking out some details here and there, but while I was expecting them to elaborate more on T'Challa's character, I found out it was just an empty shell when it came to character development and an engaging plot. I honestly expected a lot more than I've got, and there wasn't a single redeeming quality throughout the film that could save it. It seems that it was placed to glorify black actors that, while they have been underappreciated, it just was made in such a way that turned overall ridiculous, like a sort of 'empowerment' and 'coolness' that just wasn't there because the writers didn't bother with a well-developed script. They could have made a much more interesting story out of what they had to work with, and instead it just felt like a b-side to merely set some background for what's to come (infinity war).

T'Challa's character was bland and uninteresting, lacked a backbone and depth. A major disappointment, since he was depicted differently in CACW. Nakia was plain as well, which I found unfair for such a talented actress, and while they tried to make her more at some points, I felt like their efforts fell flat. Her kiss at the end with the king had as much chemistry as the one between Sharon and Steve in CACW. I wish they stopped pushing pointless 'romantic' relationships and focused more on the characters as complex people and their development.

Shuri was so-so. I feel like I would have liked her more if they'd worked more on her, but whatever. The villain's motivations where aimless and clichéd, and I feel like everyone is trying to make him more than what he really is. A resented child in a disfunctional home who thinks it's okay to bend everyone to their will because he says so. Boring.

The rest of the characters... don't even ask me. When you make the secondary characters be as uninteresting as they managed here, despite having good things to work with, you know you're doing a **** job.

(By the way, Okoye and W'Kabi's relationship? Pointless, unnecessary, they tried to add depth to their actions by taking this shortcut. No wonder it failed).

Overall, it was entertaining, the kind of entertaining you find a movie on a sunday when you're home bored and have nothing else to watch. Eat some popcorn, watch some mindless entertainment. I think actually some movies should be made for the sake of entertainment alone, but not all of them. And honestly? This sort of crossed the line.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was clearly about racial issues (and not much more in my opinion) so I'm going to discuss and explain how this is just dividing (colonisers and modern day slaves) ~yes, that is the movies terms for (white and black) people
though not explicitly stated as Whites and Blacks it's heavily implied.

The main theme of the movie is about how a child from Wakanda (who grew up in America) decided that Africans are still oppressed in such a way that he thinks overthrowing the entire world to "rise up" is a better idea than to actually help the current Africans with Wakanda technology and people all over the world (since currently there are more people suffering in 3rd world countries, than first world) one of his main talks is about how the middle city African Americans have it so bad
that all they can do is be given guns and take back what's theirs, I guess the irony is lost. The basic theme is extremely racist towards white people (again never stated, but the movie clearly implies and there were many dialogs between characters that imply it was white people (calling a character "white boy", calling the same character "Colonizer" and this was from a main character in the movie). I understand there is still racism and I am not blind to it, but the way Disney pushed this White vs Black agenda is pathetic, (clearly racism beats racism in their views...) I wouldn't mind if there was an actual reason as to why he wanted to fight for the oppressed, since I understand bad guys don't really need a reason, but they tried to hamfist this idea that there was oppression in the first world that I don't fully understand where the main bad guy gets his reasoning, he built his way up in a first world, obtained a full life he could as a person of color and even went on to cause a war
to break out between his OWN people without any remorse so if he really "cared about his people"
why is he fighting and causing war with them? I don't understand the logic behind the main plot
and really all it feels like is a scapegoat to a real agenda and feels like propaganda to me. As for the movie there was little for me to actually like, The tech was by far the best part but you could clearly tell that it was designed in such a way that they could be used to sell merchandise to children (Hey I get it, they need to make money) but because of that and nothing really else
I found nothing in this movie that I really enjoyed. The story could have been well done, the script and screenwriting was extremely bad, the characters (other than the main bad guy) were bad actors and overplayed their parts.

The CGI is strangely varied, nice in some scenes and comically poor in others. The "action" is very terrible, the dialogue is trash, and the whole development of Wakanda as a culture is absurd and bordering on parody of legitimate African culture. I think these films are so big and splashy that the studios have forgotten how to first craft a compelling story and then support that story with beautiful film-making in every single shot of the film. Black panther is just not a good movie, and it seems like a lot of people feel duped by the glowing reviews. This movie is VERY mediocre, if even that. Expand

Lastly, CGI can f*** off thank you. The fight scenes of this movie were absolute trash. Is it too hard to have a real hand to hand combat sequence without lame CGI? It looks bad and it looks fake AF. 3/10 for me and a shame because after Infinity War, my hype for Marvel came back and I decided to start watching the movies I missed. I guess I started with the worst one (probably). Black Panther, DareDevil and Spiderman are my top 3 Marvel Superheroes, so another reason for me to be dissapointed at this mess of a movie.

It explores family bonds and culture. The connections between the members of the royal family and their loyal friends and allies are a beauty to behold, as are the sets and designs that bring Wakanda to life. The touches and inspirations from the African culture into the film will impress any viewer, no matter their heritage. While it delivers with action, humor and stunning imagery, its the darker and more serious themes in the story that make it stand out. The first hero that its dependant on stronger women is the black one! LOL

Anyways. The movie is fine. Its only probably the most boring one in the entire MCU (not the worst).

Between:
1) fanboys that would love a black screen with the Marvel logo
2) critics that would love any movie with this type of cast
3) critics paid (not literally) by Disney
4) people that laugh at "what are thooooose" type of jokes

this movie was going to be overrated.

The villain COULDve been great. It wasn't. It just was better than the average Marvel villain. I get why. He had a point, so by making it a psycho (kills anybody that gets in the way and cant form any kind of relationship because he's broken and all he has is hate blablal) makes it easier to relativize the revolution ideas.

The hero could've been great. He couldve been this guy which needed tons of help to lead his people, but at least he was strong.
NOPE. He's weak and without the help of his little sister he would be dead. GREAT!

And then the scenes in the ethereal world. MY GOD. What a boring waste of time (except the last scene, which should've been the only one there).

Other than that, typical funny movie!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When Marvel started this ambitious journey of creating a universe that spans dozens of films, I did not think it would be this successful. But after surprisingly good films and high production values this was bound to happen. Marvel has finally released a flawless motion picture and, so far, one of the best of the year.

What really makes Ryan Coogler's 'Black Panther' stand out from the rest of the MCU films is that is the first film which has a proper historical and cultural identity. More so, director Ryan Coogler knows how to combine it perfectly with the fantastic elements and sci-fi technology without becoming a Black Power Movement film. This is still a Marvel superhero adventure.

Not only that the real and fictional fuse perfectly they also flourish together through brilliant cinematography, bold set decoration and slick camera movement, Coogler aiming for a very dynamic style even when filming calm scenes. These, mixed with cool and sometimes epic hip-hop and trap beats or even African chants expand the usual Marvel Cinematic Universe creating a visual and sonic landscape. And is this fusion which dictates even the plot, presenting a so true story of African-American oppression through history and how the past can come and hunt you. An idea perfectly exemplified by the scarred villain Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) which manages to completely overthrow the powerhouse country of Wakanda in a single day!

So, "Black Panther" is powerful, perfectly balanced, a treat to look at, funny (as expected from a Marvel film) and possibly the best MCU film yet!

I really thought I was going to see something more special topics wise, but there was nothing. Marvel hyped its **** to the gods yet again. I think Wonder Woman last year was slightly better for example. Without being a masterpiece either obviously. I never fall into the hype with these basics flicks and I keep being correct about it everytime I end checking one of these super hero flicks. Entertaining. Nothing else. The scores by critics are IN THIS CASE definitely VERY inflated by what it meant as a movement more than by the (non-existent) quality of the film. Expand

It is a poorly acted, predictable, fake looking two hour bloated mess of constant clichés. I rented this on Itunes as I wanted to see what all the fuss is about. I was honestly bored for the 1st half of the movie and stopped watching it, as it was almost too painful to watch. The only thing redeeming was Anthony Serkis. I watched the 2nd half a day later and it got more interesting. I am happy that some people love it. I would rank it above Fantastic Four and well below Dead Pool. As for the critics. What a joke. A score of 88? Seriously? This movie is plagued by all the things you rip other movies apart for. So you all are a bunch of hypocrites. Are you giving affirmative action bonus points to justify your score? I am all for Black Super Hero movies, but they should be good. Hell write an awesome superman who is black and let him save a city by fighting to the death. I will pay to see that. Strange social commentary lurks underThe plot is unoriginal and the visual effects are poor compared to other Marvel movies. The actors do a fine job considering that they are not asked to do or say anything more than generic superhero fare. Strange social commentary lurks under a thin veneer of poorly rendered CGI. An example from the trailer is that this resource-rich African society has built a wall to keep foreigners out. It made me wonder if this was a comment on the USA but I rarely see pro-Trump messages from Hollywood so this is a bit confusing. I decided the script was all over the place and the audience was not expected to think too deeply about the vague paradoxical references to racial inequality. The superhero costume is good but it is also copy-pasted for the villain, the other characters have very poorly designed brightly-colored unrealistic synthetic tribal clothing that was clearly only worn once, showing a genuine lack of effort. These poorly costumed characters all stand on this CGI waterfall, that appears to have them all trapped really high up, but they don't seem to notice and just dance on the spot. There is a glimpse of that in the trailer by the way. I must confess that I fell asleep in the theater and missed the end, but I saw it on an airplane and found out what happened. The ending was quite predictable. If you turn your brain off at the door there is some fun to be found in this below average action flick. Expand

This movie had the luck of timing to come out when the media has fabricated a political race war and that's the only reason it got the sales and critical acclaim it's received. Expand

Very overhyped movie, just like almost every MCU movie out there. It's just such an oversaturated market these days. The jokes were just cringey, the vfx were bad as well. Not only that, the plot, was just so formulaic and predictable. IVery overhyped movie, just like almost every MCU movie out there. It's just such an oversaturated market these days. I understand the social aspects surrounding this film, but in the end it is a film and should be treated as such. As a film, it is at best average, and that's being a bit generous. Expand

Production values were really good but the casting AND acting were WAY below par. This was a set of B and C level actors in a production that deserved better. And the B-o-B violence just made this another street, thug film, such ashame.

Bad acting, horrific special effects and even worse dialog. The story is insulting to intelligent viewers. The only good thing is that finally black people got their superhero on the big screen.

To be honest, this movie is very overrated by the critics. Now, that's not a great way to start a review, but the critics have absolutely adored this movie and hailed it as the greatest superhero movie of all time. It certainly is not. ThisTo be honest, this movie is very overrated by the critics. Now, that's not a great way to start a review, but the critics have absolutely adored this movie and hailed it as the greatest superhero movie of all time. It certainly is not. This film has some very amazing messages and the best MCU villain up to date (for now), the problem is that it seems like the critics have been caught up in both of those that they overlook the film's flaws. While the rest of the movie is not your typical Marvel movie, the first-hour certainly is. Killmonger is completely underused, he shows up and then doesn't come back in the film until 20 or 30 minutes before it ends. The CGI is inexcusably bad for a movie like this, to the point where it distracts me from enjoying the finale, which is an OK finale to begin with. Still, Black Panther is a pretty great Marvel film, filled with amazing messages and characters. It's just not as great as the critics say it is. B+ Expand
