Unwatchable for me, but is guess for kids and teenagers it might be nice.

The good:
CGI, music, known actors, design looks nice

The bad:
(Kids) bad acting, blend narrator, bad/cliche script/story

They don't have a single moment that breaks the movie, but their presence is so ubiquitous that gradually the movie gathers mass like a snowball of irritation until the end is an avalanche. To be honest the rest of the movie hardly rises above this, but at least no other flaws are so front and center to the audience. This is an okay rental if you have something else to do like laundry or an online bartender certification. Expand

The film Black Adam has a storyline we have seen too many times; there are way too many settings that are ripped directly from other DCUMCU films. You should consider this production of Black Adam as a one-off; a dream of Dwayne Johnson that was finally cobbled together into reality, but expect the future iterations of Black Adam as well as the DCU to be portrayed completely different. Black Adam is worthy of a visit to the theater, during 'cheap ticket night' of course, but don't invest too much interest in this iteration of Teth-Adam. Expand

Honestly, the thing I was wanting to see the most in this movie, that being Kahndaq, has been terribly told and the film focus's more on the justice society, which when seeing Dr. Fate, made me not excited to see them. But even though Dr. Fate is the worst character overall, I don't think he is the worst character in the film. That Honor goes to Hawk man. Now I can tell that the actor is trying his best with the character, but with the script that he was given is the main reason why his character sucks, Like for example, He said that "Heroes don't kill people", But like Superman killed Zod at the end of Man of Steel and Wonder Woman killed Ares at the end of Wonder Woman 2017. So I don't get why Black Adam cant kill when even fricken Batman has killed people before. And he is just there to get his @$$ killed throughout the entire film. I think Atom Smasher is completely forgettable even though he is the best of the crew, Hurricane was also forgettable, Dr. fate was cool in some scenes or like his character from the Comics or Injustice 2 which are my least favorite versions of him. Sabbac is also a Terrible Villain. And I Found the final battle pretty underwhelming, Finally I Think the music should most definitely be used less. With that said, I don't hate this film, I think the Dwayne Johnson does a great job as the villain version of Black Adam (even though he is being set up more as a hero rather than a villain.) The action outside of the Final battle is pretty fun, And Black Adams Introduction was Fantastic. So while not a good film in my eyes. But I would rather you watch this than Halloween Ends.

The screenwriters must have struggled to write the character of "Black Adam", as he presents himself as a brooding anti-hero but there is little that he does to suggest this other than regular assertions that he isn't a hero. Many serious moments of his are often undercut by cringey attempts at humor. Although this is a regular occurrence in super-hero films (and much maligned, by the way), it feels entirely out of character and unnecessary for the Black Adam they are presenting to us. His conflict with the heroes of the Justice Society was intended to further reinforce his anti-hero persona, but they instead come across as the aggressors while also being completely oblivious to the actual villains in front of them. The Rock is good for this role, but the script failed him. On the positive side, the enjoyable performances of the supporting characters help to stabilize this film, and the action is very entertaining. Expand

But after watching it, I had mixed feelings. I felt like they put four random superheroes from DC comics, put The Rock in there too, and called it a day. Action was quite good but characters where mid. Again, this is that kind of film where they felt like they need to once again, prove to us that a woman also can be a super hero or on high position in some evil organization. Otherwise this film was a two hour introduction of the new character that will appear in the background or in two or three scenes in the future films. Expand

This movie could have been good but there's just so many unfunny jokes like when he lets the guy fall to his death while talking to Fate even tho they could have used him to find the boy it would have been better if he had flew over to him at super speed grabbing him mid air before he hit the ground and getting him to tell them where the boy is then after when the guy thinks he gonna get to live for telling them where the kid is Black Adam just drops him to his death anyways. That would have been way better not only would it actually be funny but also wouldn't be super dumb because again Fate wanted to use him to find the boy and Adam could have easily grabbed him before he hit the ground the same Adam who was also looking for the boy and had reason to not just let the guy die Expand

I can appreciate the small unique aspects of the movie, its attempts at thematic elements, and the fact it's entertaining for a one-time watch, but it lacks so much charm and the Rock's ego truly overshadows the film. Everything else in it is just so generic, bland, and off the shelf. It feels factory-made and, honestly, might be worth saving for a watch on streaming rather than a trip to the theater. There is a major problem when the best part of your movie is the post-credits scene and only because another and more famous superhero appears in it.

Dwayne Johnson wanted Black Adam to be many things and with that intention the film pretends too much while delivering mediocre results that also exposes what a crappy actor he is.

It remains to be seen what they will do with The Flash to get another idea about the franchise, but DC and Warner have shown once again that they don't have a damn plan regarding what they want to do with their cinematic universe. And that's because, film after film, there's simply nothing that can bring it to life.

Massive disappointment.

Dwayne Johnson and Pierce Brosnan shine as Black Adam and Dr Fate respectively, it's such a shame that Dr Fate was underplayed. I still don't get why Dr Fate was played down so much, it's such an audacious decision that makes absolutely no sense.

To sum it all, Black Adam can be entertaining if you can look past its horrible plot and dialogues, poor villain and generally paper-thin characters.

I actually believe that the casting is excellent for the majority of the roles, and you can almost see the shadow of what Mr. Johnson may have given had the direction been more successful. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So if this movie confirmed anything it was one thing, Dwayne Johnson isn't a real movie star, he simply cannot carry a top-tier movie. Johnson merely seems to be the ultimate ensemble actor who can boost a franchise, but on his own, he simply ain't got the chops. The new Arnie he certainly is not, confirmed.

Plot wise the whole thing is so basic and generic with little imagination in my opinion. Black Adam is accidentally resurrected from his tomb by a strong female character trying to uncover an ancient mcguffin. Black Adam is seen as a bad guy thusly the Justice Leag...sorry Justice Society (a precursor to the League) is called into action to bring him down.

The main issue I found with this movie was the simple fact that most of the runtime is made up of the Justice Society fighting Black Adam, that's it! The entire movie is set within this fictional ancient city which looks like somewhere in Egypt or the Middle East and nothing much else really happens. We just get lots of the usual superhero battle sequences involving lots of super punching and super throwing either into things or through things. The CGI effects are overall pretty terrible to boot which doesn't help matters. Everything is SO obviously CGI with that nasty plastic rubbery-looking gloss stuck alongside obvious-looking bluescreen shots and obvious sets. It sounds cliche but everything just looks like a videogame sequence. It just doesn't look convincing at all and in this day and age I simply expect more because I know it can be so much better.

Black Adam himself suffers the same problem any Dwayne Johnson movie suffers, Dwayne Johnson. In that I mean Johnson simply cannot act beyond his persona and he ALWAYS comes across as Dwayne Johnson in a costume, whatever that might be. You want a fun comedy romp in a jungle, or a ridiculous action flick with glimmering muscles then he's perfect, but that's it. Johnson trying to play it dark and murdering people just doesn't work because it just doesn't suit him. For the time being, he simply doesn't have the range.

As for other characters, let's quickly talk about the Justice Society. Boy oh boy do these guys suck ass. I mean seriously, talk about the poor man's Avengers. The bottom-of-the-barrel superheroes. We couldn't afford any decent characters or there weren't any good ones left so we had to use these guys, geez!! Hawkman looks ridiculous with his bird-shaped helmet adorned with feathers, he's also been race-swapped. I guess his super power is mainly flight? I guess that's useful for...flying. As her name suggests Cyclone controls the wind (Ugh!). Seems kinda useless and funnily enough she doesn't really do much in the movie because how's that effective against a Superman-type character like Black Adam? She's also race-swapped. Atom Smasher has the ability to grow to an enormous size like a giant, again pretty useless in the movie. And last but not least the poor man's Dr. Strange...Doctor Fate who funnily enough has virtually the same set of powers, I think, I'm not a comic expert. And yes I realise some of these characters appeared before their Marvel counterparts but I always found it funny and stupid how both Marvel and DC have essentially characters that mirror each other. They even have their X-Men-type ship to fly around in that is stored in their own X-Men-type mansion.

I guess the biggest disappointment here is after all the cookie-cutter crap I had to sit through to get to the cookie-cutter finale, the big bad guy turned out to be this laughable looking Devil/Satan-esque character that looked like he was getting ready to fight Sub-Zero. Talk about videogame looking nonsense Jesus! Literally everything in this movie was the most generic of generic superhero poop I've seen so far. You could have literally had ANY superhero character in here and it wouldn't have made any difference whatsoever. The human characters were completely inconsequential, much like the plot really. And naturally you had Marvel-esque quips (which totally underscored the tone) because DC is always playing catchup despite that Marvel aspect now losing favour.

I didn't really expect much here, at this point it merely feels like they are churning out superhero movies of any and all characters simply to keep the wagon rolling. This movie is literally the epitome of cookie-cutter, paint by numbers, off the factory line etc...There is nothing here that is original and nothing here that needed to be shown. This movie simply didn't need to be made. A Dwayne Johnson vanity project that admittedly could have been something as we've all been wondering how The Rock would fair in a cape, but somehow he screwed it up and all we have left is a plain boring superhero clone of a movie. That Superman credit scene will also go down in cinematic history as one of the biggest 'what if' dead ends ever (bit like Skeletor in 'Master of the Universe'). An open ending to something that will probably now never happen.

TLDR: Black Adam is the latest film in the DCEU franchise starring Dwayne Johnson, Aldis Hodge and Pierce Brosnan. Black Adam isnt bad, but it isnt amazing.

The acting is passable in this film. I don’t mean that negatively towards any of the performances. I feel everyone was doing the best they could with the script they were given. My only small complaint is Dwayne Johnson plays himself like he does in everyone of his movies. This has a certain charm, but it would have been nice to see Black Adam sound and feel a bit different to Dwayne Johnson. The script is my biggest problem with the movie. It needed more time in the writing room. A lot of themes are half baked which is a shame. For instance, there are hints at a deeper friendship between Dr Fate and Hawkman but this is never really developed. Furthermore, Black Adam is supposed to be an antihero. This could have created a really interesting dynamic but it stopped short. I never felt any sense of the character being anything but a hero. He only killed people trying to kill him and they were obviously already bad. An opportunity was missed here.

The movie suffers from an overreliance on CGI like most modern superhero movies. What is worse, there were a few times in the film where the CGI was noticeably bad. If you are going to rely on CGI, then you need to ensure it is not obvious. To sum up…it is tolerable. It wont win any Oscars or Razzies and I don’t feel like a wasted my money on buying a ticket…especially with the after credits cameo. But, I was more excited during the cameo than I was in the whole film. I only hope a sequel would take full advantage of the character of Black Adam as this movie certainly has not.

I liked the overall story when you look at it from afar, but when you dig into the details, that's where the movie misses its mark. The worst part from Black Adam is the dialogue, there's too many moments where you cringe and want to stuff your head in a pillow. It never found an identity or flow within the story, it tried to be too much in a 2 hour span. The writers could have taken a different approach with the political messaging and write about what's happening in the Middle East today, but decided to write a generic "we are oppressed by foreign invaders" story and never dove into it. I liked the major plot points that the story got to in each act, but again when looking into the details of how we got there thats where the story isn't as ironed out as it should be. The action is fun and looks great, but honestly you will enjoy this movie just as much by watching the action scenes on Youtube once it's released. Another high end DC movie and yet again they are still struggling to find their identity in the superhero genre. Expand

However, when this film tries to have fun, it is so stuck in angry stoic mode that it fails miserably. He doesn't even manage to crack a smile until the very end, when he gives Hawkman the most forced smile I've ever seen. And, while I understand that this character is "darker" and "angrier" than most heroes, that means Rock has left his famous charisma at the door. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie to do justice should have been rated R.
The beginning was fine except for there being a kid narrator. and then the movie suffers from anything that goes with a badly written child character. The action which there was plenty of was fun but not greatly choreographed. Smasher and Cyclones action was lackluster like they didn't know how to use them. Smasher himself only punched 2 times in the whole movie and was comedic relief the rest of the time. Cyclone for someone as smart as she is supposed to be, its clear the writers used her powers like a child would of. anime characters have used wind powers with far more imagination. Hawkman and Dr.Fate were great, both the characters and actors. sadly the writers depowered Dr.Fate as he alone is a match for Adam in the comics, and Hawkmans mace was not hitting anywhere near its power in the comics. Black Adam was a hero, not an anti hero and def not a bad guy in any shape or form in this movie. His very Dark Origin from the comics is compleatly turned around to give him a more loving twist. Instead of wanting all of the power he shares with his son and killing him to gain it as in the comics, his son just gives it to him to save his father and then the boy dies from arrows and Adam goes into grief riddled revenge. the final bad guy is a travasty, who is he, why do i care, idk, forgotten like the wind. the movie is not that great.

Unfortunately I watched this movie yesterday. Wish I could give a serious review, but how can I do it when Black Adam doesn't take itself seriously.

It's ugly, unpolished, weirdly paced, weakly written, full of meh CGI and sub-par acting save from some lines that Brosnan and Hodge deliver.

It does seem it wished to say something about the leftovers of colonialism and neo-imperialism, but it's all drowned under the sound of punches and wannabe funny one-liners.

If this is what DC's next phase will look like, then ew.

The movie doesn't try to do more with the superhero genre and in a market of superhero over-saturation, this doesn't stand out whatsoever. It's clear they wanted to make a fun, entertaining popcorn movie and I think in terms of that, it succeeds. The most interesting aspect of this movie is the post-credit scene and the implications for the future of the DC cinematic universe. It is a little bit sad though that the post-credit is more memorable than the actual movie. With James Gunn now head of DC studios, hopefully, we get more enjoyable and interesting DC movies than this. Expand

There were times I thought Duane Johnson was going to turn to the camera, arch an eyebrow and say, “Are you smelling what The Rock is cooking?! “ I didn’t know anythingWhat has potential to be a crowd pleaser was more like a snoozer. There were times I thought Duane Johnson was going to turn to the camera, arch an eyebrow and say, “Are you smelling what The Rock is cooking?! “ I didn’t know anything about the comic book character ‘Black Adam ‘ before seeing this movie. The movie does a great job explaining his back story: a slave who sees his family executed due to his son defying the emperor. When the emperor tries to execute the son the gods decide to not allow it and saves him. They empower the son to be a champion of the people. The slave also becomes empowered (not going to put a spoiler in here to explain how that happens) yet the gods conclude his abuse of those powers cannot be tolerated so they place him in tomb like prison for eternity. Switching to current times the city is still occupied with the people being abused. There is a race on to recover the emperor’s crown made from a rare earth mineral (an obvious rip off from ‘Black Panther ‘). There are two factors going after the crown: those who want to hide it so it cannot be used for evil and those who want to use that power. It is this retrieving of the crown that leads to ‘Black Adam’ being freed from his prison. He wasted no time killing as many as possible who were trying to recover the crown for evil purposes but not the people trying to recover the crown to hide it. Basically anyone who aimed a weapon at him. Once you open your movie with this amount of violence how can you top it and keep your audience entertained? The answer is this movie can’t. Every thing after this is basically a rehash of the first 25 minutes. The grade B DC characters sent to ‘arrest’ him are ridiculous: ‘Black Adam’ has these powers and you send THESE three?! Superman wasn’t available (maybe in a sequel)? The ending was worse… I won’t spoil it here other than to say stretching it out as long as possible was awful. By this time I was hoping that ‘Black Adam’ would decimate the city and save us all in the audience. Expand

Dwayne’s performance is fine, but he’s too one note and always in mono tone voice. The action scenes try to be flashy but overdo it with the slow mo that shouldn’t be in the movie at all. The music is just generic super hero music which didn’t really help much and dampened the impact of the fight. DC is trying too hard to compete with Marvel and just can’t keep up. Black Adam is a disastrous attempt at a big budget Superhero movie and another mediocre addition to the DCEU. Sorry Dwayne The Tooth-fairy Johnson, your best movie was Fighting with My Family and nothing is ever going to beat that. Give it up man, this ain’t your gig.

So in the year 2600BC a bunch of Wizards gave the power of the gods to a young slave in order to stop the evil King Ahk-Ton from using the evil crown of Sabbac. He triumphs, making him the Champion of Kahndaq. Now nearly 5,000 years later he his accidently awakened in modern day Kahndaq. Deemed too powerful, it’s time to call in some professionals to deal with him. Cue The Justice League……no wait, that’s not right……The Suicide Squad……oh no, not them either, ah yes, The Justice Society of America……that lot. Made up of Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Dr. Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell) and Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo). And no I’m not making these up. Christ the DCEU is a right mess. I wish they’d just calm down with all the team up movies, it was half-assed before and it’s the same again. For anyone who didn’t already know, yes this is a Shazam spin-off.

Alright I don’t ever want to see slow motion used in another Superhero movie ever again, ya hear me? You ruined it. Black Adam probably could have been twenty minutes shorter if it wasn’t for the extreme overuse of slow motion. Feckin’ ridiculous. Enough is enough. This right here is the result of a bunch of mindless money hungry studio executives sitting in a room and brainstorming a way to make a Blockbuster Superhero movie that will rake in the cash. Get one of the highest paid stars in Hollywood to sign on as the lead and bam! You’ve got yourself a Superhero movie, and a rather heartless one at that.

Black Adam is a giant disappointment and I didn’t exactly have high expectations to begin with. It’s dull, stupid and uses an obnoxious amount of terrible CGI for the endless crashy fight scenes. There’s also plenty of slow motion to make sure you don’t miss anything. And look I know many of the comic-book movies rely on lots of CGI but it’s just not up to standard anymore. Either pay the VFX artists better or allow more time to make it actually look decent.

There is absolutely nothing exciting about Black Adam, it’s one of the most underwhelming Superhero movies I have ever seen. There is zero peril, no sense that the hero is ever in danger or in trouble. They’ve created the blandest character imaginable, a hero so ultimately powerful it’s boring. He’s surrounded by a bunch of underdeveloped characters showing up for more awful CGI fight scenes. Lots of explosions, lightning bolts and evil red lasers.

Black Adam isn’t the worst Superhero movie I’ve ever seen, it’s not even the worst DC movie out there but it’s close. Too close. Recommended for any DCEU fans, I’m sure there’s still a few of you out there. The mid credits scene lasted about a minute but it was better than the entire film for one obvious reason.

More of a rant against the superhero movies than a review.

I really hope for the sake of humanity that one day, once this whole superhero frenzy dies down, the film historians will look back at this time period (starting with the 2001 X-Men to whenever it ends) as an embarrassment and a low point in movie history. The common defenses for the superhero movies are "it's escapism", "they aren't meant to be serious", even though some of them take themselves far too seriously to the point of unintentional comedy (TDK trilogy, BvS, The Batman) and of course "if you don't like it, don't watch it".
Infantilization of cinema and keeping the adult children in a perpetual state of arrested development, validating their childhood obsessions and flattering their egos, studios know who their audience is and they don't respect you, not one bit. WB/DC has the dark and gritty™ so the viewers can say: "maybe I'm not wasting my time watching people in silly costumes fighting each other, look the movie is so dark and serious, it's a crime drama.", and to them that automatically makes it good.
Marvel movies are more light hearted which doesn't make them neither better nor worse, but there is a line for how much jokes and gags you can take before you start rolling your eyes.
Black Adam is one more nail in the cinematic coffin of Hollywood, too bad it won't be the final.

"I can't wait for the 16th reboot of Batman and Avengers 37!!!" - average moviegoer, probably.

Trash. No character development. Invincible main hero. Story plot? Not much too it. Don't waste your time and money unless you are going to see it with a 12 year old who likes special effects.

I had the opinion that DC movies were overtly dark and miserable mope fests with no artistic value. This did not change that opinion. This was garbage!

This movie fills the niche between being boring and being dumb. The jokes are the wurst.

Another low IQ movie for the masses. Look the rock plays the rock in everything. He has one style and thats it. Poor Pierce he does try but the writing is on par with rings of power. Go get you a book instead.

While I so appreciate The Rock giving it his all, the film was messy, convoluted and just an overall copy of everything Marvel has already done without bringing anything new to the table. Dr. Fate = Dr. Strange. Whirlwind girl = Storm. AtomWhile I so appreciate The Rock giving it his all, the film was messy, convoluted and just an overall copy of everything Marvel has already done without bringing anything new to the table. Dr. Fate = Dr. Strange. Whirlwind girl = Storm. Atom Smasher = Hulk (he even spoke and delivered lines like Mark Ruffalo). Hawkman = Falcon. It only took place in the once location too, was poorly paced, had pretty terrible CGI, worst since Black Panther and the villain was laughably generic. I don’t know, I wanted more, wanted to love it, and was supremely let down. Hands down the best part was the reveal at the end and the only thing that gives me hope for the DCEU. Expand

They call him "Black Adam", but he's only half black. Also there were too many plotholes.

It's only saving grace was Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Fate. I just felt bad for him though as he tried to pretend to believe in the awful dialogue. Please save your money. It's just two hours of bad CGI. I'm not kidding. There is no real plot development. This was a complete and utter travesty. Expand

Black Adam stunk on ice. I blame The Rock and the director the most. Most uninteresting “movie” ever!

I'm embarrassed to say I saw this excuse for a movie. Dead silence and a black screen would have been better. Seriously. Even for a "fun" superhero movie...corny beyond belief. BAD.

Black Adam is the definition of banality.

It's not a funny movie, it's not a well-written movie, it's not a movie that leaves you with something, it's not a movie that enriches the characters, in short, it's a very bad movie. Lousy

Lousy graphics, trivial story, just an awful mess. Avoid at all costs.

That was painful. I almost walked out on this film, wish I did. The first 20 mins or so are alright, but then it just goes way off the rails. Terrible!

The critics were so right on this one. Oh my god. A complete waste of time. Did children write this?
