Seeing Pandora through the eyes of an uneducated human-turned-alien is the perfect vehicle for spellbinding encounters with the landscape, creatures, and foliage of this strange world. But there's something utterly familiar about the adventure, with plenty of predictable moments to keep us safely on the rails. This didn't detract from my enjoyment of the movie--even with formulaic plot points, the storytelling was well crafted and the CG characters were believable and poignant. Based on the trailer, I expected to be distracted by the shifts between CG and practical photography, but in practice it worked well. As the story hit its stride, I came to sympathize with the Navi and this emotional investment further helped suspend disbelief. Walking out, my cynical take was: "Matrix meets Titanic meets Pocahontas." But even with nods of the head and recycled material (see: credit music), the sum is much greater than the parts. Expand

Avatar is another major advance in movie making and manages to be adult while only being pg-13. Also for such a long movie I worried there would be the expected slow points, but I enjoyed every minute of it. That really says something.

The CGI is a new benchmark in cinema history, and although at times the Na'vi don't quite look real, it's a hell of a lot closer than anyone has ever come before. The 3D is expertly judged and deployed; none of that crap like spears pointing in your face every two seconds, but proper effects which are only used when needed. The plot is slightly overused, but to be fair Cameron wrote this fourteen years back when it still would have been original. So don't judge him on that. Still the undisputed King of the World. Expand

Familiar storyline aside, the movie is a visual feast - especially in IMAX 3D. The transitions from "real life" to CGI are generally so seamless that the line disappears entirely. Not far off is the day when actors are simply used for initial modeling and voiceovers. Throw in state-of-the-art 3D animation and Avatar has changed the way we will watch movies. It has done for 3D and CGI what The Wizard of Oz did for color. Was the storyline predictable? Absolutely. But if you enjoy your movies as an escape from reality, this film will immerse you so much in another world that for 161 minutes your reality will cease and Cameron's will take over. I'd give it a 10 if it was just a little less predictable, but even that doesn't take away from this cinematic marvel. See it in 3D, and IMAX at that if you can. Expand

Pretty good for a sequel. The scene with the stamp collection was kind of slow, but I really think that Donny Osmond shows what kind of actor he can really be when he puts some effort into it. At 1 hour and 28 minutes, it was a little short. Surprised there were no commercials before it. Neat to see a feature film in all black and white. The strong Japanese look to the film was refreshing. More than I expected in terms of storyline and everything I expected in terms of state of the art CGI. It's a sad trend in society that maintains that a film worthy of acclaim must fundamentally "reinvent the wheel." To be sure, that is an awfully lofty expectation and not one I plan to adopt as I'm guessing that more joy can be extracted from life if one adopts more reasonable expectations. Sure the themes have been seen before, but no art avoids the themes of previous purveyors within the same genre. I'd rather spend my time watching and enjoying this movie thoroughly a few more times than complaining about its failure to entirely reinvent the genre. To each their own. Expand

Having seen the movie, I would agree that the premise is nowhere near unique, but to me originality shouldn't be the basis for judging the quality of a film. More than anything a truly great movie should be striking, and Avatar is precisely that. James Cameron used his budget ($237m) to create one of the most engrossing environments to ever grace the screen, and pushed the 3D technology (which I don't even like) to the limit. The result is pure spectacle; behind me in the movie theater there was a family with three children and throughout the 2 1/2 hours there were constant exclamations of "Wow!" and "Oohh!" I would have been slightly annoyed had I not realized I wanted to say the same things, and for a movie to revert a hardened critic like me to a world of pure escapist wonder, I have to give the film credit. However when you watch it again you realise it was because you were so overwhelmed with the small things in the film and focused on the fantastic parts instead of anything else. I thought that way after seeing it but Avatar will never live up to the likes of Star Wars, Blade Runner, E.T. or Inception as examples of sci-fi films that will never have equals.

This movie is still entertaining but it is not fantastic storytelling. It's a good set up for climactic action scenes at best. Jake Sully was a likeable character but he was the nobody-becoming-hero kind of character. The characters are as familiar as cookies. They're made of the exact same recipe that's been used over and over making it lose its speciality. However Avatar can't be denied of its ambition in trying to deliver an epic scale cinematic experience.

I thought this was one of the top movies of 2009 and thought it as a favourite movie of mine, but my opinion of it has diminished somewhat, but I still love it in my own way, not like my love for Star Wars or Lord of the Rings.

You need to see the movie in 3D to be able to fully appreciate how well made it is. All the negative reviews probably saw the 2D one instead of the authentic version. Now they've FINALLY released the movie on 3D Blu-Ray we can all purchase the version we loved in the cinema and watch it at home any time we want to.

As a storytelling movie it isn't all that impressive. As an experience it is amazing especially when you're watching the 3D version of it. I think people never cared for the experience or exploration of Pandora; they just wanted to make fun of the guy who made Titanic, the movie that was once the top-grosser of all time that was defeated by Avatar.

Avatar is a good time at the movies but beware the trolls of this movie. Don't listen to them. Watch this movie and see for yourself and it's okay if you love it or hate it or anything else in between. It's not the best movie ever made; there are better films, but Avatar is great escapism for those looking for a sci-fi fantasy movie to help escape their own boring lives.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll admit, with all of the hype that surrounded this film, I was sceptical as to how good it could actually be, and was waiting for it to fail. Oh, how wrong was I? Avatar is a brilliant film. I saw this in 3D earlier this year, and in 2D just the other day, so I feel I can give a review that isn't biased with just one setting of the films view. I'll just clear the air, state the obvious here and leave it in the dust: The film in 3D is an AMAZING experience. The way in which you see these spectacles James Cameron has created, it will burn itself into your memory in a good way. 2D has you focus less on the spectacles and more on things like the story and the characters. Now, to the films actual review Avatar is the tale of Jake Sully, a soldier who takes over from his dead brother on a science project, which temporarily has his mind transferred into an Avatar body, to help the military in their quest to take a substance from Pandora (the planet). From there on, he lives amongst the Na'vi (the race the Avatar body is based upon) and begins doubting where his allegiance lies. I'll admit, the plot isn't anything complex or original. It's been done before, and you can basically guess where the plot's going to go. "They're gonna rebel" "His truth will be discovered" "He's gonna question his motives". And you knew they only introduced the Toruk so Jake could master it. Also, was I the only one who didn't like the guy playing the boss? I mean, he was great in Friends and My Name Is Earl, in comedy roles, but for something serious like this, it just didn't seem to suit him. And the oxygen on Pandora was toxic to the humans. How exactly does it work? Stephen Lang's character had quite a time of exposure to it (when chasing them escaping on the helicopter, when he shot Grace) and seemed fine. And Jake as well. He was exposed for an amount of time, possibly longer, and ended up fine. Anyway, thats the negatives out of the way. Now the positives The world of Pandora and its inhabitants was a marvel to behold, even in 2D. James Cameron has a very creative mind. Just look at all of the creatures, from the Hammerheads, to the four-armed monkeys. Not just that, the technology as well. How info could be moved from one screen to another with just a flick of the wrist, and the handcuffs. I'll say it again, James Cameron is one creative guy, with one hell of an imagination. Shame about his acceptance speeches, though..... The way CGI contrasted with the humans. It didn't seem to contrast much. When (Avatar) Jake was carrying Grace, it didn't seem like one big clash of reality and Computer Generated Images, they seamed together perfectly, like two pieces of a puzzle clicking together. I liked how the characters developed. How Grace went from a no-nonsense **** to how she was warm and a good friend to Jake and Norm. I especially liked how Norm changed from a goofy scientist to him punching out officers and joining in the big battle. The final battle: What a marvel! Just the contrast of the flying Dragons (or whatever they are) versus the gunships. Just basically how it was Nature VS Machinery. I think it's safe to say that there was no shortage of awesomeness within that battle. Shame Tsu'tey was killed off. Just as I was getting to like him. Once Jake first woke up in his Avatar, when he first went from standing up to running through the outdoors, I felt for him because in human form, he's confined to that wheelchair, but as a Na'vi, he's no longer confined. I also felt James Cameron placed some parallels for the Iraq war within the movie. One group going to another land in order to take something that they wish, resulting in a battle. And Stephen Lang! His turn as a villian is quite menacing, especially in the cold hearted way he just bombs the Tree, the home of the Na'vi. I felt that he was the perfect counterfoil for Sam Worthington's Jake Sully. All in all: It may seem like it mainly concentrates on the visuals, and it's plot development may be by numbers, but this is definately a film you must watch! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A young man named Jake Sully takes his late brother's place in a mission on a distant world of Pandora. There he learns that Parker Selfridge wants to drive the native humanoid Na'vi in order collect all the material throughout. In exchange for his legs, Jake helps his new friends use their avatar identities find the Na'vi, but he gets lost along the way and finally finds the tribe. As he begins to bond with the tribe and falls in love with the beautiful blue alien, Neytiri, little does he know that Colonel Quaritch determines the destroy the Na'vi as he rallys up the tribe for an epic war for the fate of Pandora.

I caught this in the same month it came out in 3D and was really amazed by it. Then a few months later, I saw it again in 2D that time and enjoyed it again.

I've been told by a lot of people that this movie plagerized Dances with Wolves, Pocahontas, The Last Samurai, and Ferngully: The Last Rainforest, but that doesn't apply the fact that this is different from the others. IMO, for a action/science fiction and a love movie, I liked it and I called it "One of the best movies ever made" and if some of you hate it for its plagerism, that's fine.

As for the rest of this movie, I liked a lot about it. The acting was excellent, the storyline was well-pace and put together, the visuals were very awesome to look at even though its not from Industrial Light and Magic and Sony Imageworks, the science was very interesting, the action scenes were unique and epic, and the James Horner music score (pop song "I See You" included) was memorable and had a lot of emotion to it which makes it even more memorable. Oh, and James Cameron's directing was very neat and creative, so that's worth saying much.

Avatar is James Cameron's highest grossing movie and it is in no doubt one of the best action/science fiction movies ever made. Can't wait for the sequels. Keep up the good work, James.

The day I watched it for the first time, I thought it was the most amazing sci-fi movie ever, with outstanding visuals, music and design. The day after, I realized that the plot was way too predictable, corny and cliche, and that some acting was borderline B-movie. Now, I've watched the film for the third time, and I have reached the conclussion it is one of the best films of the decade. Yes, the plot is nothing new or original, but James Cameron manages, just like he did in Titanic, to give it just enough emotional impact and even provide a good message about racism, enviromentalism, imperialism, the dangerous potential of capitalism, and the treatment of Native Americans and other "uncivilized" cultures through history. In the end, Avatar is trully a great film and an instant classic. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. AVATAR (or, as some seem to enjoy calling it, "The Blue People Movie", which really should be THE SMURFS, not this) is an adventurous, intense movie, and the best movie you can think of to be the highest-grossing film, both worldwide and in America. Very few parts of this actually truly ticked me off, but there were a few to name: such as near the ending, when it began to get boring (a habit many creative sci-fi films such as even INCEPTION get into); and when Grace (Sigourney Weaver) died. It used every inch of its over sized budget to create one of the most spectacular set of effects ever seen. Yet despite its crowing achievement, AVATAR is not Cameron's best works, too distilled for a more general audiences. Not as great as his classics such as Aliens or T2, but more palatable for the masses. At its heart, it's a love story told countless before. This simplicity allows it to become a film that transcend different cultures, but it is also its main weakness. Yet despite all that, it is still well acted and has pioneered technology that is currently influences other film makers today. I went to see it in theaters on the day it came out, and damn was it a fantastic film. Never have I been so engaged to a flick that was entertaining like Avatar. I know own it on DVD; it was that great. But it all boils down to personal preference. The reason it doesn't score a perfect 10, was because of some predictable scenes throughout the film and some cheesy lines. Other than that, Avatar was one of the most incredible and spectacular films I've ever watched. Oh, and I also recommend this movie on a Home Theater system to get the most of the experience. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Earth is overcrowded and certainly not a place I would choose to live in, but Avatar has a solution. Or perhaps a way to make money. Avatar is the highest-grossing film of all time and I can certainly see why. It had aspects that appeal to a lot of people with the mix of animation and live-action and the themes present throughout that definitely sparked conversation within. Jake Sully is a paralyzed marine that is easily set up as a hero from the start, and this story is about him and his (and human's effect on Pandora.

This mission is all a quest for wealth, and Jake knows this when he signs on. What he doesn't know is that he's gonna fall in love with the culture, the land, and the people. His journey would have never even happened without his love interest Neytiri's help. "Don't thank. You don't thank for this. This is sad only." The Na'vi people remind me of a human group or tribe that is being attacked as well, so I can certainly see the inspiration behind this movie, yet so many audience members probably do not agree with the standpoints shown, so it surprises me that it was such a hit. I am behind the messages shown though, so this kind of exposure has to be beneficial.

The plot overall seemed to be very predictable and a tad cliché, but it also made up for it in the striking visual effects and unique peoples portrayed. I imagine this would have been breathtaking in 3D with all of the sweeping landscapes and scenery. Jake's mission on Pandora was always to help the corporation trying to destroy the environment on this world, but eventually he finds himself to end up liking the Na'vi's world more, and who wouldn't? Their culture and environment is amazing and something that Earth has lost. I think the "rebels" see that and want to preserve this world from what happened to theirs. Jake's personal mission seems to have changed, but his employer's has not. He can't change their mind on an invasion, so he must do whatever he can to protect them on his own.

"I was a warrior who dreamed he would bring peace. Sooner or later though, you always have to wake up." Despite the fact that Jake feels like he belongs on Pandora, his body says otherwise and continues to prove himself through the battle. It's an uphill fight, but the Na'vi people prevail with a truly inspiring anti-war message that could resonate with all people. "Hey Sully, how's it feel to betray your own race?" And that's exactly what he does. In this horrible portrayal of some humans, Jake's decision to become a true Na'vi completely makes sense and successfully brings together this war-ridden story.

I saw some negative reviews and most of them wrote ''same cliché'', really guys?! What do you want more than that?! Every part in the movie is perfect starting from plot to visual effects until the performance.

If I want to talk about visual effects I couldn't stop, the designers of ''moon Pandora'' they couldn't design better than this, it seems so realistic and breathtaking, beside Pandora's animals, plants, trees and people, everything perfect.

I like the plot also, it's showing how the humans are savages, unlike others aliens movies that show the aliens are the enemy and the humans are innocents, the story is really reflecting our lives, we already ruined our earth by wars, killing animals and cutting trees, and it will be same if we control another planet.

''Avatar'' is one of the greatest movie in the history of cinema, and I would like to thank the genius director and writer ''James Cameron'' and the whole cast for this masterpiece, and I hope "Avatar 2, 3 & 4'' will be as same as this.

It has more "world-building" into it. Story is good, I really have not much bad to say. It is a weird movie but looking back it was ahead of it's time and now can be understood easier. When it came out, it was overrated. But... people still talk about it today, so there must be a reason, reasons!
It was the best looking CGI movie when it came out.
Sure, movie has tons of problems that I would say are "cringy", but have you seen the documentary about it? The impact of this movie still can be seen today. I actually don't remember any movie like this, this is completely original movie, without "MCU-like" setups or part of already set "universe" like James Bond for example. This was the most expensive movie ever made and most successful movie of all time (until Endgame).
And it did not even have that expensive cast like, Endgame.
It has enough interesting things inside than any blockbuster movie.
This is cyberpunk, fantasy, Jurrasic-park-ish and space movie at the same time. Dialogue is good, not boring, pacing is great, not boring.
The characters are really well made. This is one of the few movies that deserve the word: EPIC

For one, the sequel is coming soon. But also, this movie gets a weird amount of hate. The criticism is that the writing and dialogue is bad and that the movie is a rip off of Pocahontas and other films like it. I would argue that themes are recycled throughout Hollywood all the time, and Avatar does it in a very unique way that adds substance and depth to the story. What made Avatar so great was obviously the action, the visuals, the art design and the special effects. And you can call the plot a rip off all you want, but I thought it was awesome. I think anytime you use metaphors for real world problems, some people get mad and offended. That being said, I do think this film has weaknesses. I do agree some of the dialogue is mediocre. Also, I don't think Sam Worthington did a very good job as Jake Sully. But overall its one my favorite films, and I can't wait for the sequel. The haters can keep hating. Expand

Visually the movie looks great and the world of Pandora is gorgeous. Unfortunately, since I wasn't watching it in 3d I wasn't as sucked into the world of Avatar as I would've otherwise. As far as plot goes the movie does a nice job. The characters and setting are great and the one guy having two identities keeps things interesting as he struggles to find out who he really is. Also, the story in Avatar Humans vs. Navi is different but at the same time very familiar, which I like. My one criticism is where the movie ends. (SPOILIERS ALERT) I really don't like how the Navi defeat the humans because it feels almost forced in there. A more appropriate ending would be when the Navi set off to fight the humans. As a result, of adding on the climactic battle, the movie was too long for my tastes and started to drag. Avatar is the one movie that everyone should see particulary in 3d. You will be amased at the amount of detail in Pandora and find the plot to be very interesting. If you are a parent, bring your kids because to some extent, Avatar will provide them the same joy that a Star Wars movie would. Expand

There's more to a movie than a good plot, and I can't think of any movie that demonstrates this better than Avatar. If everything about a movie was amazing except for the story, I feel you can honestly call it a good movie.

Fantastic movie. If the ideas seem simple, it is because they are. If the acting seems bad, its because it is supposed to be black and white. Plus underneath it all, the movie is more or less a vehicle for James Cameron's political views, which you might not care for much if you lean towards the conservative side of the spectrum. However, Avatar gets the most basic thing that a movie should do right on the money -- it is entertaining. For that reason, it succeeds and should be given a look. Expand

The character development was a little lack luster, but over all an awesome movie!

I even mentioned to my wife that it was like watching a moving work of art. However, while sitting through this 2 plus hour epic one thing was bothering me. I've seen this story before. Instantly I was flashed back to the plot of Kevin Costner's Acadamy Award Winning film "Dances with Wolves". Suddenly the comparisons came flying back and it was staggering! Maybe it's been too long since anyone had seen "Dances" or maybe many of you weren't even born when that film was released but believe me somewhere Kevin Costner is mad. Expand

The story of Avatar itself isn't all that much to jump up and down about. The film is, however, the prettiest thing you've ever seen in a movie theater. I saw the 3D version of this film, and I can say it's worth it for the 3D version. Too many 3D films destroy their believability by making things "jump" out of the screen at you -- "WOW it's 3D!". This film does not do that. 3D is used as a tool to make the action more real -- not less. Expect incredible visuals -- but don't expect much on story from Avatar. Expand
